Thank you very much for preparing my son Ivan for the Math SAT. He received a score of 800 on the SAT II 2c! Many thanks to Mrs. Katz and the other RSM teachers: Mrs. Kozlova for spring break teaching; Mrs. Rifkin for teaching SAT II 1c (Ivan got 800 last year), and Mrs. Khavinson for helpful assistance and creating a warm atmosphere in the school. – Olga Atochina

R

ecently, NPR ran a story detailing the "Russian Math" phenomenon — the growth of the Russian School of Mathematics from a kitchen-table passion project to a school that serves over 20,000 students across the country. But what is "Russian Math," and how does it differ from other approaches? “Russian Math” is built on the foundational principle that the cognitive ability of a child — the power to think and reason — is not predetermined at birth, but can actually be developed over time. And that math is by far the best tool for this development.

Curriculum

In a “Russian Math” curriculum — the first pillar of this approach — students are taught to think both on a concrete and abstract level, to employ reason, logic and utilize previous knowledge. Take the problem below, for example, which students will encounter in our curriculum in the 2nd and 3rd grades.

Solve problems b and c using the result of problem a. 634 - 182 = 452 635 - 182 = ? 635 - 181 = ? We do not expect the child to calculate the answers using specific quantities but rather to reason through the problems at an abstract level. The classroom conversation might go something like this...

Students will suggest different ways to find the answer; the teacher will then challenge them to compare the first and second examples and explore how the difference between them might lead to a different result. Eventually, mostly on their own, children will discover that: b) 635 - 182 would equal 453, because you’re taking the same number away from a number that is one greater, leaving you with a difference that is one greater. c) We just learned that 635 - 182 equal 453. Now 635 - 181 would equal 454, because you’re taking a number that is one less away from the same number, leaving you with a difference that is one greater. The teacher will then help students express their thoughts through the language of algebra, replacing the numbers with symbols A and B, and rewriting example C) above as A - ( B -1 ) = ( A - B ) + 1.

• Students begin multi-step problems as early as 1st grade, learning to build on previous results to progress towards the solution. Sufficient practice and repeated success with challenging yet accessible problems develops a mind-set that is open for exploration and challenges. Over time, top scores on standardized tests and mathematical olympiads become a natural by-product. More importantly, math becomes a beautiful, exciting, and a fun tool that empowers the mind. To learn more about the program, please schedule free evaluation (949) 864-6592 missionviejo@russianschool.com www.russianschool.com/mission-viejo 25571 Marguerite Parkway, Suite G Mission Viejo, CA 92692

These problems offer a glimpse into some of the main elements of the Russian Math curriculum: • Rather than working with specific quantities, students use abstractions and explore the relationships between them, developing a language for this type of thinking process. • Students learn not to fear something that looks difficult, or even impossible. They draw from their reasoning ability and problem-solving experience to navigate through problems. www.russianschool.com/mission-viejo Advertising Information / 949.498.0705

CUSD MESSAGE DEAR CUSD FAMILIES, I can’t believe that we are preparing for winter and the end of 2019! This year has gone incredibly fast and as we prepare for the holiday break, we are planning many events to share the great work of our teachers and our schools with the community. Once again, we are partnering with the Monarch Beach Resort to host Merry Monarch, a CUSD Family tree lighting event that will feature a variety of musical performances by our extraordinary students, hot cocoa, cookies, and visits with Santa Claus. The most amazing part is that 100 percent of ticket sales will support CUSD Music Programs! Merry Monarch is scheduled for Sunday, December 15, 2019 from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. Ticket information is available on our website at bit.ly/MerryMonarch2019.

We are also planning two events to showcase CUSD Innovation in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM). CUSD Students and Staff Dress in Orange to Celebrate Unity Day, A National Event Supporting Bullying Prevention

It’s a color associated with safety and visibility, and it’s been described as warm and inviting. Its vibrancy makes an impactful statement. It’s the color orange, and hundreds of Capistrano Unified School District administrators, staff members and students dressed in the autumn season hue on Wednesday, October 23, for an important cause: Unity Day. Within National Bullying Prevention

NATIONAL UNITY DAY 18 | Capo School Life

Month, CUSD joined schools across the country to celebrate Unity Day, a national event in support of bullying prevention. Organized by PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center, Unity Day was established as an opportunity for students, staff and community members to spread messages of kindness, acceptance and inclusion. Students and staff wore orange to school as a symbol of support and unity. “Orange provides a powerful, visually compelling expression of solidarity,” said Paula Goldberg, executive director of PACER Center, in a statement. “Whether it’s hundreds of individuals at a school wearing orange, store owners offering orange products, or a community changing a landmark to orange, the vibrant statement becomes a conversation starter, sending the supportive, universal message that bullying is never acceptable behavior.” For years, bullying was socially justified with expressions such as, “Bullying is a natural part of childhood,” “Some kids just deserve to be bullied,” or “Bullying is Advertising Information / 949.498.0705

a rite of passage.” The goal of the day is to bring youth, parents, educators, businesses and community members across the nation to emphasize the message that bullying is not acceptable and that all students deserve to be safe in school, online and in the community. Standing up for someone or supporting the cause that addresses bullying makes a difference and changes lives, PACER said. CUSD wore orange in celebration of Unity Day, encouraging their school families to do the same and share messages of kindness across social media. In 2011, the first year of Unity Day, comedian and television host Ellen DeGeneres wore an orange sweater and talked about the significance of Unity Day on her show and promoted the event online. Everyone’s involvement is important, organizers said, as the event goes beyond the school wall and into the community. Those who were bullied felt that no one cared and the simple act of wearing orange shows them that they are not alone and hopefully empowers them to speak out and reach out.

CUSD SPOTLIGHT

Stop Bullying: CUSD Shows Support During National Bullying Prevention Month In recognition of October as National Bullying Prevention Month, Capistrano Unified School District students, staff and community members participated in several activities aimed to eliminate bullying. District officials and faculty members used the time as an opportunity to unite everyone for kindness, acceptance and inclusion in all its schools. Campuses sent a unified message of hope and support for those who experience bullying by wearing orange on Unity Day, October 24. Educators, parents and community members will continue to extend their prevention efforts throughout the year. Such practices will help kids prevent bullying by talking about it, building a safe school environment, and creating a communitywide bullying prevention strategy. In order for bullying prevention to work, everyone needs to be involved. Students sitting on the bench are looking for a friend. If someone sees a classmate on the buddy bench, they ask them to play. The goal is to grow the circle of friends until everyone has someone to 20 | Capo School Life

play with. Last year, Troop 3672 raised funds to install the bench on the playground. Since faculty members filmed a video to describe how the bench worked, the bench has become effective as kids go over and make new friends, said Tijeras Creek Principal Diann Buckingham. “I get compliments all the time from parents at our school who might be new and say, ‘The kids treat each other with respect,’ and that the kids are very kind,” Buckingham said. “I see kids all the time choosing to be kind to each other.” Tijeras Creek staff talks to students about finding opportunities in showing kindness and not expecting a reward in return, Buckingham said. Every week, students recite a pledge against bullying, and talk about the importance of becoming an upstander, a person who sticks up for a bullied victim by saying, “That’s not nice, why would you say that?” “My job is to help them look at how their Advertising Information / 949.498.0705

actions affect everyone and show them how to be kind,” Buckingham said. “Tijeras Creek scholars are respectful, kind and responsible. We say, ‘Be a Buddy and not a Bully,’ and it’s become the culture of our school – not just during a week.”

POSITIVE ROLE MODELS

• They demonstrate by their presence that education is important. • They enhance school security. • They reduce bullying. • They are Watch D.O.G.S., (Dads of Great Students) – a group made up of fathers, grandfathers, uncles and other father-figures who volunteer for at least one day each year at their child’s/student’s school. During the day, Watch D.O.G.S. read and work on flashcards with students, play at recess, eat lunch with students, patrol the school entrances and hallways, monitor the lunchroom, and assist with traffic flow. They also actively engage with not only their own students, but other students as well.

CAPO KIDS

s Ti pFOR BUILDING CONFIDENT, EAGER READERS

Reading is the foundation for all learning and essential for school success. As children progress through school, it's important to continue to build their reading abilities. ''Reading confidence comes with continued practice,'' says Emma Villamizar of the Laguna Niguel Huntington Learning Center. How can parents help build their children into confident, eager readers?

1. WORK ON VOCABULARY.

Nothing will frustrate a child while reading more than encountering lots of unfamiliar words. Request vocabulary lists from your child’s teacher and work with your child every night on reviewing those words. When reading, encourage your child to keep a dictionary nearby to look up unknown words.

2. FOCUS ON THE BUILDING BLOCKS.

At a very early age, children learn phonemic awareness— that words are composed of different sounds, which form words and other sounds—and phonics—letter sounds, the relationship between letters and sounds, and decoding words. But as they move into more challenging texts, fluency and comprehension become the focus. You can help by continuing to read aloud with your children and encouraging your child to do the following while reading: think through the plot and structure of a story, pause to confirm understanding (and ask questions/search for answers) and discuss ideas. 22 | Capo School Life

3. MAKE DAILY TIME FOR READING.

Practice makes improvement when it comes to reading. Remember to make it an enjoyable activity as well rather than a “have to” that your child feels forced to do.

4. ENCOURAGE GOAL SETTING.

Goal setting is valuable because it gives children something to work toward and can serve as a motivator. Think about fun ways you can encourage the reading habit by setting goals. Maybe you plan an ice cream outing to talk about every new book your child finishes. Maybe you read a book together and set page goals for each week, then talk about what you’ve read at the dinner table.

Why Is My Child Struggling With Writing Too?

If your child struggles with reading, chances are that writing skills are affected as well. For effective writing your child needs rich vocabulary, correct spelling and grammar, proper sentence structure and punctuation

among other skills. These come easier if your child has a strong reading foundation.

How Huntington Helps:

Reading is important for school and life. If you know your child is struggling with reading and you’re not sure how to help, call Huntington. We will uncover the root of the problem and develop a customized learning program that will help your child strengthen those reading skills, regain his or her confidence and learn to enjoy reading. Remember, the Summer Slide is real. Use the time to build skills in Reading Comprehension, Writing, Math and Study Skills instead of falling further behind. To learn more about the Huntington program, please schedule an academic evaluation (949) 339-1001. www.huntingtonhelps.com/ center/laguna-niguel
