MESSAGE FROM CUSD

Cap

Dear CUSD Community, This time of year has traditionally become a season of service here in the Capistrano Unified School District. Each year I am heartened by the outpouring of food, clothes, and other resources from our students, families, teachers, and staff in an effort to serve those who are homeless, hungry, or just going through a difficult time in their lives. You will find that school sites throughout our District support a variety of nonprofit organizations in December. This year, during our November 14, 2018 CUSD Board of Trustee meeting, we recognized the contributions of two extraordinary organizations who serve our students and families: Family Assistance Ministries and South County Outreach.

L

tuna-on-the To support these organizations in their work as we prepare for winter, we kicked off a District-wide donation lunchable drive that begins at many of our school sites this week and ends December 14. I invite you to join us in these fruit cups & app efforts as we provide food donations to provide breakfast and lunch to young people in need. vienna saus I am thankful for the generosity of our students, families, teachers, and staff, which is especially apparent this pretzels time of year. I am also grateful for your ongoing partnership and support of our students in our unwavering commitment to student success. mac n' che popcorn Sincerely,

WHAT IS RUSSIAN MATH, ANYWAY?

R

ecently, NPR ran a story detailing the "Russian Math" phenomenon — the growth of the Russian School of Mathematics from a kitchen-table passion project to a school that serves over 20,000 students across the country. But what is "Russian Math," and how does it differ from other approaches? “Russian Math” is built on the foundational principle that the cognitive ability of a child — the power to think and reason — is not predetermined at birth, but can actually be developed over time. And that math is by far the best tool for this development.

Curriculum

In a “Russian Math” curriculum — the first pillar of this approach — students are taught to think both on a concrete and abstract level, to employ reason, logic and utilize previous knowledge. Take the problem below, for example, which students will encounter in our curriculum in the 2nd and 3rd grades.

Solve problems b and c using the result of problem a. 634 - 182 = 452 635 - 182 = ? 635 - 181 = ? We do not expect the child to calculate the answers using specific quantities but rather to reason through the problems at an abstract level. The classroom conversation might go something like this... 10 | Capo Life Magazine

Students will suggest different ways to find the answer; the teacher will then challenge them to compare the first and second examples and explore how the difference between them might lead to a different result. Eventually, mostly on their own, children will discover that: b) 635 - 182 would equal 453, because you’re taking the same number away from a number that is one greater, leaving you with a difference that is one greater. c) We just learned that 635 - 182 equal 453. Now 635 - 181 would equal 454, because you’re taking a number that is one less away from the same number, leaving you with a difference that is one greater. The teacher will then help students express their thoughts through the language of algebra, replacing the numbers with symbols A and B, and rewriting example C) above as A - ( B -1 ) = ( A - B ) + 1.

• Students begin multi-step problems as early as 1st grade, learning to build on previous results to progress towards the solution. Sufficient practice and repeated success with challenging yet accessible problems develops a mind-set that is open for exploration and challenges. Over time, top scores on standardized tests and mathematical olympiads become a natural by-product. More importantly, math becomes a beautiful, exciting, and a fun tool that empowers the mind. To learn more about the program, please schedule free evaluation (949) 864-6592 missionviejo@russianschool.com www.russianschool.com/mission-viejo

These problems offer a glimpse into some of the main elements of the Russian Math curriculum: • Rather than working with specific quantities, students use abstractions and explore the relationships between them, developing a language for this type of thinking process. • Students learn not to fear something that looks difficult, or even impossible. They draw from their reasoning ability and problem-solving experience to navigate through problems. Advertising Information / 949.498.0705 www.russianschool.com

TOP DOCS

Arnold Cuenca, DO, CAQSM, FAAFP

Jesus M. Valadez, MD

FA M I LY M E D I C I N E

FA M I LY M E D I C I N E

Dr. Cuenca began his path into the medical field by attending Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, CA. After medical school, he moved to South Bay San Diego where he eventually served as Chief Resident of the Scripps Family Medicine Program. As Chief Resident, not only did Dr. Cuenca continue to fulfill his physician role as a teacher, but also managed to expand the sports medicine curriculum. He would eventually join Scripps Coastal Medical Center in Oceanside, where he provided care for several years until relocating to MemorialCare Medical Group in Mission Viejo. To me, the most important part of medicine is to master the art of listening to patients. Every patient has a story to tell, and I make it a personal goal for them to tell it in its entirety. Beyond his normal work duties, Dr. Cuenca has lectured at both local and national conferences on topics of Family Medicine, Sports Medicine and Practice Management. He currently serves as a board member for the Family Practice Management Journal (FPM), which is a peer-reviewed journal of the American Academy of Family Physicians. He has also served as an educator by mentoring pre-med and medical students, as well as resident physicians. Due to his interest in Sports Medicine, Dr. Cuenca completed a one-year fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine at Western University of Health Sciences-OPTI/San Diego Sports Medicine and Family Health Center Program. During his fellowship training, Dr. Cuenca served as a team physician for SDSU and the Medical Director for several San Diego events. He formerly served as the head team physician for CSU San Marcos for several years prior to relocating to Orange County. Aside from being a physician, Dr. Cuenca enjoys running and has participated in several half marathons. He has also earned his third-degree black belt in Tang Soo Do, a karate-based Korean martial art, and endeavors to live a healthy, balanced lifestyle and encourages the same for his patients.

Jesus Valadez, MD, grew up in a family of doctors. From a young age he envisioned his life path would follow the medical field as he both enjoyed helping people and the science behind medicine. He is a California native but spent considerable time in Mexico and therefore became fluent in Spanish. Dr. Valadez enjoyed the diversity of his education, as he graduated from San Diego State University, moved on to Harvard Medical School in Boston, and then completed his Internal Medicine internship and residency at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. He and his wife, who is a medical school classmate, then moved back to New York City where he worked in private faculty practice for Cornell Medical College in the Upper West Side. Dr. Valadez and his family of four eventually moved back home to California to practice medicine. Dr. Valadez enjoys formulating effective medical plans for his patients based on individual background and experience. In addition to his medical education, he has also gained knowledge and experience on several volunteer medical trips to Colombia, Mexico, Tanzania and Central America. He thrives on improving patient health by connecting with them through his diverse life experiences and enjoys enhancing their understanding of medical issues. One thing wonderful thing about being an Internist is enjoying the combination of the diversity of the patient’s backgrounds and their medical issues while formulating an effective medical plan for the patient. Dr. Valadez balances his work-life with his wife and two older teens while enjoying traveling, cooking, soccer and boating.

REAL ESTATE

as Vegas home prices have been rising at one of the fastest rates in the country amid low availability and strong demand! Las Vegas house prices were higher in June than they were a year earlier, but sales volume fell. The median sales price of previously owned single-family homes was $290,000 last month, down 1.7 percent from May but up 12.7 percent from June 2017, according to a new report from the GLVAR.

LAS VEGAS HIGH-RISE / OFFERED AT $370,000

home sweet home

Buyers picked up 3,265 single-family homes in June, up 4 percent from May but down 8.9 percent year-over-year. Inventory also remained well below last year's levels, as 4,335 houses were on the market without offers at the end of June, up 5.3 percent from May but down 16.2 percent from last June, according to the GLVAR.

ADVANTAGES OF LIVING IN LAS VEGAS VS. CALIFORNIA TAX RATES

• Nevada has no personal income tax. California has high property and sales taxes. • Nevada’s funding comes from tourism, gaming and sales tax. • Property tax rates in Nevada are capped at a 3% increase.

COST OF LIVING

• California’s average cost per square foot for residential land or property is about $237. This is more than twice the average in Las Vegas where cost per square foot is about $111. The cost of living in California can be challenging for new home buyers. Higher housing costs in California contributes to its higher cost of living.

LIFESTYLE JACQUELINE SMITH HAS INTEREST IN HOMES FROM ORANGE COUNTY TO LONG BEACH, THROUGHOUT THE INLAND EMPIRE AND NEVADA.

• Both California & Nevada offer surrounding beauty, a progressive lifestyle, and lots of sunshine. Nevada makes a lot of sense for any resident, at any stage in life. Its desert landscape, entertainment choices, and a low cost of living compared to California is a great choice for those looking for a place of residence in a tax friendly and beautiful city — the Las Vegas Valley.
