A message of welcome from Jan van Zanen, Mayor, City of Utrecht Let’s kick some brass!

The Netherlands has a long amateur music tradition and there are a large number and a great variety of bands in our country. With a national total of around 2,400 bands (wind, fanfare and brass), almost 125,000 Dutch men and women play in orchestras. In Utrecht, too, amateur orchestras give important added value to local society.

That is why I am very pleased to host the European Brass Band Championships 2018 in our beautiful city - the Capital of Brass Music.

In the next few days, a total of 26 bands will enter the stage in music complex TivoliVredenburg. The strong line-up, from 16 different countries, promises a fantastic and exciting contest. The field of participants will be a mixture of experienced EBBC participants and first-time contenders. Musicians from Belfast to Vilnius and bands ranging from the shores of the Mediterranean to Scandinavia - different European bands, all with gifted musicians. However, they all have one thing in common: they are ready to kick some brass in Utrecht! So, whether you are a participant or part of the audience, I am sure that you will enjoy the EBBC2018 - organized by ZIMIHC, the organisation for amateur art.

As an added extra to the official EBBC timetable, you can treat yourself to one of the many outdoor concerts taking place throughout the city.

Bands and ensembles from Utrecht will showcase themselves with open-air concerts on the Stadhuisbrug bridge and with musical boat parades in the picturesque Oudegracht canal. A very pleasant way to get to know our city.

Speaking of getting to know the city of Utrecht, something to look forward to is the Gala Concert. The theme and design, ‘chiaroscuro’ (light/ dark), is inspired by the future Caravaggio exhibition in the Utrecht Central Museum, starting in December 2018. An excellent reason to pay another visit to the European capital of brass music…

A message of welcome from Appie Alferink, Managing Director of ZIMIHC The pinnacle of the international brass music scene is visiting our city. With a programme offering something for everyone, Utrecht is in for a real treat!

ZIMIHC is the organisation for the amateur arts in Utrecht. We support artists in doing what they want to do - painting, acting, dancing, singing and making music, including brass music! Whether you are a beginner or an experienced artist, we offer opportunities for everyone.

Organising an international event such as EBBC2018 is in line with ZIMIHC’s philosophy and vision: bringing our local, regional and national talent together with the international world of brass band music will inspire and give new impulses. At the same time, we provide a direct platform to various musicians.

Preparations for this magnificent European festival started all the way back in 2014. We developed the Utrecht Brass Programme to include local, national and international activities. Over the years, we have been able to enjoy symphonic wind music (European Championships for Wind Orchestras), marching bands and brass bands, symphonic brass orchestras (World Association for Symphonic Brass Ensembles) and various other kinds of wind ensembles in the street and on boats.

In the run-up to the Championships, residents of various Utrecht neighbourhoods can also enjoy brass band music; with concerts in Overvecht, Zuilen and Leidsche Rijn, and a two-day conference in the ZIMIHC Theatre Zuilen on April 28 and 29, it will truly be a music festival for all of Utrecht.

The Utrecht brass music scene is very much alive and has proved capable of constant renewal and rejuvenation in recent years. All brass and wind music associations in Utrecht are involved in Utrecht Brass and, during this EBBC, many of their members will act as volunteers. There is great enthusiasm and even greater love of music. After all, passion is what it’s all about!

EBBC2018 welcomes top musicians from all over Europe and allows our own local and national orchestras to make themselves heard; not just inside the concert halls and ZIMIHC theatres, but also outside, on the streets, all of Utrecht will be able to celebrate the party that is brass music.

We wish both musicians and audience lots of musical fun over the coming week.

A message of welcome from Ulf Rosenberg, President of the European Brass Band Association On behalf of the European Brass Band Association (EBBA), it is my pleasure to welcome you all, 40 years on from the birth of this great event, to the 41st European Brass Band Championships (EBBC) in Utrecht, The Netherlands.

This is the sixth time the EBBC has been hosted in the Netherlands. The first time the EBBC was held outside London, it happened in Kerkrade in this country, in 1983, demonstrating the strong band tradition in The Netherlands and the nation’s commitment to the contest and development of European banding. It is natural for the whole European brass band family to again gather in this country.

The European Brass Band Championships have a very strong band line-up and we can look forward to an exciting contest with wonderful music-making by the best European bands. We welcome 17 bands from 15 different countries: Austria,Belgium, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Norway, Scotland, Sweden, Switzerland and Wales. The contest was again almost sold out within only a few hours.

The European Youth Brass Band Contest was introduced in 2014 and has been a success for all players, audiences, juries and organisers, so we now have an event filled with youthful joy and fine performances of excellent music. We are again delighted to announce a positive response with nine youth bands from seven countries: Austria, Denmark, England, Lithuania, Norway, Switzerland and Wales.

This year’s EBBC includes the 8th European Soloist Competition for Brass and Percussion instruments.

Twenty excellent young players out of 42 applicants have made it through to the final stages of the competition here in Utrecht.

Many thanks go to the federations and member countries that will provide extra financial support to the Soloist Competition: Belgium, Denmark, England, Lithuania, Norway, Scotland, Sweden, Switzerland and Wales.

This week in The Netherlands the young players in the European Youth Brass Band are together for intensive rehearsals, concerts and social gatherings. This element of European musical friendship among the youngsters is an essential investment in the future of banding in our countries. The EBBC is much more than a contest. It has dimensions beyond the wonderful music performed to the audiences.

The impact is bigger than the hundreds of hours each performer has given to the preparations to achieve high personal and common goals. The event has a socio-cultural dimension. The bands and their movements share an important cultural heritage, regardless of their personal stand on debates over European integration and governance. We are together, and strong together, with one core thing in common - the wish for, and contribution to, a strong civil society with well-functioning local, national and European-wide volunteer organisations.

For EBBA it is about building a cultural network throughout Europe with the EBBC as an arena for people to meet, exchange ideas, and create and maintain friendships. Relations and understanding will never go out of fashion. To continue to build and develop this is the band movement’s moral imperative.

Therefore I am also thankful to our member organisations, partner and sponsors supporting and sharing these ideas and ambitions: Besson (Main Sponsor), Geneva (Main Sponsor), World of Brass (Principal Partner - now for 15 years), plus the group of other sponsors: Yamaha, British Bandsman, Centre Stage, Hal Leonard MGB, Doyen and Stomvi.

Dom Square, the place to start If you are visiting Utrecht for the first time, the place to start is Dom Square. Over 2,000 years old, it boasts the magnificent Gothic Dom. This was also the site of Castellum Trajectum, the fort built by the Romans that laid the foundation for Utrecht. The remains of the fort are still underneath Dom Square.

Dom Square offers you a unique way to experience Utrecht’s past and present. For a breathtaking view of the city, climb the 465 steps of the tallest church tower in the Netherlands: the Dom Tower. During a guided tour, you will discover everything about the history of both the tower and the accompanying Dom Church, which used to be physically connected to the tower.

Another memorable attraction involves going in the opposite direction: underground instead of into the air. Fringe programme of the European Brass Band Championships 2018

International events – local community With three international events in 2016, 2017 and 2018, the wind music scene in Utrecht is clearly bursting with energy.

All the elements of the Dutch wind music tradition are present: the wind band, the fanfare, and the brass band.

With over eighty orchestras in Utrecht and the surrounding area, successful educational projects, and innovative concepts for concerts, the wind music scene continues to develop. Utrecht Brass (in Dutch, Utrecht Blaast) pairs international events with local musicians. It aims to bring local and international musicians together, provide educational programs and spread knowledge about wind music. Utrecht Brass aims to strengthen and widen the wind music network in Utrecht and support its members.

European Championship of Wind Orchestras It was a great privilege that the ECWO association selected Utrecht as the venue for the first edition of the European Championship of Wind Orchestras (2016, May 20 – 21). The upcoming Championship of 2018 will take place on May 26 in Brussels, Belgium. For the first time, Utrecht Brass organised a two-day fringe programme with wind music orchestras all over the city centre of Utrecht. www.ecwo.eu.

World Association of Symphonic Bands & Ensembles International Conference The WASBE International Conference (2017, July 18 - 22) provided an interesting programme of lectures, workshops and concerts especially for conductors, composers, and

teachers from all over the world. Utrecht Brass organised an honour band conducted by Ivan Meylemans, together with fourteen wind music orchestras from Utrecht and around. Participants could attend the concerts in the WASBE programme for free. Soloist was Femke IJlstra (saxophone). In addition, a nine-day festival was created to showcase the diversity in wind music the Netherlands has to offer, with lunch concerts in churches and several outdoor concerts. www.wasbe.org. photo Winfried Leeman

Utrecht Brass, a programme supporting and promoting the wind music community in Utrecht, organises a free fringe programme around the European Brass Band Championships 2018. Utrecht Brass is an initiative of ZIMIHC, a platform, supported by the City of Utrecht, that has been promoting the amateur arts in Utrecht for nearly thirty years.

European Brass Band Championships The European Brass Band Championships (2018, April 28 – May 6) will showcase the best Europe has to offer when it comes to brass bands. This event also includes a solo competition, a youth competition, and a European Youth Brass Band. ZIMIHC added the Utrecht Brass Weekend to the programme. Upcoming projects and events Within the programme Utrecht Brass, ZIMIHC is developing new projects and events together with the network of wind orchestras from Utrecht and around. They meet four times a year to exchange knowledge and information and to work together on new projects.

The first weekend of June 2018, ‘Utrecht Blaast Buiten’ will show nearly twenty wind orchestras in the city centre of Utrecht. This will be the first edition of a new tradition in Utrecht, working towards 2022, when Utrecht will celebrate 900 years city rights. As part of this celebration, more wind music events will be held in 2022.

In March 2019, ‘Utrecht Blaast Binnen’ will showcase ten wind orchestras from Utrecht and around in TivoliVredenburg. Workshops and a final concert will be organised together with Canadian Brass.

Over the coming years, several wind music events will take place in Utrecht, with orchestras from Utrecht and around and from abroad. Keep yourself informed by checking www. utrechtblaast.nl.

Utrecht Brass Conference

began in 1998, when he was appointed as the resident musical director of the Stavanger Brass Band (Norway). Since then, his reputation as an authoritative interpreter of brass band music Russell Gray has been acknowledged at home and abroad. Since 2008, he has been the principal conductor of Molde Brass Band (Norway) and Adjunct Professor of brass at Queensland University (Australia). Russell is a Yamaha endorsed artist and is much in demand as a leader of workshops, clinics and seminars.

He also leads Yamaha’s star-studded NEO Brass Ensemble.

Amersfoort was founded in 1975 as the ‘British style’ brass band of Amersfoort and its surroundings. Brassband Amersfoort plays in the 2nd division and has been led by conductor Vincent Verhage since December 2011.

April 29 | 15.30 pm Two of the best brass bands of the Benelux will perform at this try-out concert. The veteran group Brassband Schoonhoven, conducted by Russell Gray, will share the stage with Belgium national champions Brassband Willebroek (conductor Lode Violet). Brassband Willebroek will perform pieces such as Flashpoint by Martin Cordner, the EBBC set test piece Time for Outrage! by Marco Pütz and the Balkan Dance by Etienne Crausaz. To get Utrecht in the mood for the European Brass Band Championships, ZIMIHC organises the Utrecht Brass Weekend on 28 and 29 April. This weekend, the Utrecht Brass Conference will take place, with lectures and workshops, open air concerts in the city centre of Utrecht and try-out concerts by the Dutch and Belgian national champions and others.

European Youth Brass Band The European Youth Brass Band (EYBB) was formed in 2000 and gave its first performances at that year’s European Brass Band Championships in Symphony Hall, Birmingham. Since then it has become a central feature of the European Championships and has maintained a high-profile existence in its performances throughout Europe.

This year’s EYBB has been rehearsing since the players’ arrival in Utrecht on Saturday 28 April and will stay together through to their departure in the evening of Sunday 6 May. As in previous years, the EYBB is scheduled to play on several important occasions connected with the European Brass Band Championships.

The band consists of 35 players from all over Europe, specially selected by their countries to take part in the week-long course. It is fair to say that players who have been in the band in previous years see it as a real highlight of their playing career and the hardworking, but very rewarding, week means that they will make many friends who will remain in touch long after the course is finished. The band has several

functions to perform during the week, some ceremonial and some more formal and focused.

The EYBB will perform on 2 May at Akoesticum, Ede, on the 3rd in the concert showcasing the finalists of the European Soloist Competition in Hertz Hall - TivoliVredenbrug. On the 4th, the band will play at the prestigious Opening Ceremony of the European Brass Band Championships at Utrecht Town Hall. On Saturday 5 May, the EYBB will again perform at the TivoliVredenbrug in the Gala Concert along with Eikanger-Bjørsvik Musiklag, Capella de la Torre and K.O. Brass. To close the week, it will perform at the Award Ceremony of the European Youth Brass Band Contest on 6 May. As well as a top-class conductor in Ivan Meylemans, the European Youth Brass Band also requires excellent management, and this task has been undertaken this year by Eline Beumer and Marloes van den Hurk of ZIMIHC.

Musical Director Ivan Meylemans Belgian (but Netherlands based) conductor Ivan Meylemans is one of the most exciting and dynamic conductors to emerge in Europe in recent years. Meylemans was invited to lead the EYBB because of his wealth of experience from working with symphony orchestras and symphonic wind bands, as well as brass bands. As EBBA President Ulf Rosenberg said: “Meylemans possesses exactly the right charismatic and inspiring personality to enthuse the young talented musicians of the EYBB.” Ivan Meylemans is currently chief conductor of the Zeeland Orchestra in Middelburg (Netherlands), Brass Band Schoonhoven (Netherlands), symphonic wind band St. Michaël of Thorn (Netherlands) and fanfare band Kempenbloei from Achel (Belgium).

He also works as Professor of Orchestral Conducting and as conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of one of the finest conservatories in Belgium: LUCA School of Arts, based in Leuven. He has worked with major symphony orchestras in Europe and until recently served as assistant of maestro Mariss Jansons at the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam. Ivan Meylemans was conductor of the WASBE2017 Honour Band, an initiative by ZIMIHC to involve local wind musicians in the WASBE2017 International Conference in Utrecht.

TivoliVredenburg

The European Brass Band Championshps will take place in TivoliVredenburg. This unique venue is situated in the centre of the medieval city of Utrecht, and is a cultural hub for music and entertainment of all genres. Within its breathtaking walls, TivoliVredenburg offers numerous concert venues with perfect acoustics, suitable for symphonic music, pop, jazz, chamber music and dance, as well as cafes, bars, lounges and a restaurant.

The many spaces between these auditoriums can be used for gatherings of all kinds. The venue can accommodate a combined total of up to 7,500 people. As grand and overwhelming as the whole site may be, each separate room is marked by its own intimate and personal atmosphere.

TivoliVredenburg Great Hall The Great Hall, in which the EBBC will take place, has a unique, octagonal auditorium with world-famous acoustics and character.

It is located on the ground floor and has 1717 seats.

Hertz The Final of the Soloist Competition will take place in Hertz. This hall is designed for spoken word and chamber music. Hertz is fully made of wood which gives this hall a warm look and feel.

The intimate shape of the hall makes it very suitable for solo performances.

TivoliVredenburg Pandora The purple coloured Pandora is a hall ideally suited for parties and events like our Brass Party. It is a located on the 6th floor of TivoliVredenburg. From here everyone can enjoy a majestic view of Utrecht. People who want to have a more quiet chat and drink can go to the violet coloured Pandora foyer located directly underneath Pandora.

ZIMIHC Theater Zuilen

ZIMIHC Theater Zuilen will host the Utrecht Brass Conference, the try-out concerts during the Utrecht Brass Weekend and the first and second rounds of the Soloist Competition. This theatre is situated in the middle of the district Zuilen in Utrecht and offers a professional theatre, which can host about 220 visitors. ZIMIHC theatre Zuilen is one of three theatres ZIMIHC is running in the city of Utrecht. It is located between two renovated school buildings from the 1920’s. The total venue is named Vorstelijk Complex (Royal Building) and houses a welfare organisation and restaurant The Colour Kitchen as well.

Akoesticum

The Akoesticum is the location of the seating auditions and the first rehearsals of the European Youth Brass Band. Akoesticum is an International Performing Arts Training Centre since 2015. It resides in a beautiful 1906 heritage site on the unique historic premises of a former army base. Akoesticum offers the convenience of having high quality rehearsal venues, state-of-theart equipment, overnight and catering facilities all in one place.

BRASS BAND SCHOONHOVEN Brass Band Schoonhoven was founded in 1921 as a fanfare band and transformed into a brass band in 1971. Under the baton of Erik Janssen the band was promoted to the Championship Division in 1998 and became one of the leading Dutch brass bands. By 2013, the band already had won four Dutch National titles in succession, in addition to the French Open and Belgian Open Brass Band Championships, and became a record holder at the Euro Brass Contest with five titles. At the European Brass Band Championships from 2011 to 2014, Brassband Schoonhoven only scored top-six places and won the 2012 Own-choice with 99 points. In 2014 the band made its debut at the Brass in Concert Championships and won the Entertainment Prize. In 2016 the band became Dutch champion for the fifth time in its history.

Brass Band Schoonhoven is not only active on the contest stages. It frequently performs on various concert stages at home and abroad, and has made two humanitarian concert tours to Cape Town, South Africa. The band also self-promotes many events and concerts.

During EBBC2018, Brass Band Schoonhoven will be conducted by guest conductor Russell Gray.

ADJUDICATORS TORMOD FLATEN (Norway)

Tormod Flaten is an international Besson artist and solo euphonium player of the Royal Norwegian Naval Forces’ Band.

With his three solo recordings, numerous appearances at major international festivals and his passion for developing new repertoire, Tormod has established himself as one of today’s most exciting voices of the euphonium.

He has performed live on radio and television and has appeared as a soloist in the USA, Korea, Great Britain, France, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, Belgium, Germany, Denmark and Finland. Tormod studied euphonium with Kim Lofthouse and Grethe Tonheim at the Grieg Academy, University of Bergen. His two exam recitals were historic, being the first Norwegian brass player to gain the highest possible mark on both occasions.

In 2014, Tormod Flaten won the audition for the highly sought-after solo euphonium position with the Royal Norwegian Naval Forces´ Band in Bergen. He taught euphonium at the Grieg Academy and served on the board of directors for the International Tuba Euphonium Association.

Tormod Flaten played with leading Norwegian brass band Eikanger-Bjørsvik for 13 years and he is a founding member and principal euphonium player of Bjørsvik Brass. As a conductor he has worked extensively with several of the top wind and brass bands in Norway. He led Sandvikens Ungdomskorps to victory in 2011 when it was crowned as Norwegian Wind Band Champion.

Tormod Flaten is an experienced adjudicator having appeared at numerous band, solo and ensemble competitions in Norway and internationally.

SIMONE REBELLO (England)

Simone Rebello graduated with Distinction from the Royal Northern College of Music to embark on a career as a solo percussionist that has seen her recording several CDs (the latest with the BBC Singers), touring and broadcasting extensively nationally and internationally and winning a collection of awards and prizes including Cosmopolitan Woman of the Year in the Performing Arts.

She works frequently as a concerto soloist with wind orchestras and brass bands around the world and as a solo recitalist.

In September 2010 Simone was appointed as Director of Percussion at The Royal Northern College of Music and in September 2017 became the Deputy Head of the School of Wind, Brass and Percussion.

In addition to performing, Simone Rebello is an experienced adjudicator of percussion events, wind and brass contests and general music competitions and has judged at such prestigious events as BBC Young Musician of the Year, National Brass Band Championships of New Zealand, Australia and the USA, and Switzerland and for the National Concert Band Finals.

In 2010 and 2014, she presented the European Brass Band Championships from Linz and Perth respectively and the Brass in Concert Championships from The Sage in a live webstream event. Since 2011, she has presented the RNCM Festival of Brass including a concert for BBC Radio 2. She has also worked as a presenter for the National Brass Band Championships at the Royal Albert Hall. Simone Rebello is a solo artist and endorsee for Yamaha Music Europe, Mike Balter Mallets and Sabian Cymbals.

MARTIN WINTER (England, Norway)

Martin Winter is a graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) in Manchester, where he studied trumpet with Howard Snell and John Dickinson.

He has been a freelance trumpeter with most of the major British orchestras and was Associate Principal Trumpet of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra for eight years from 1992. Since the 2000/01 season, he has been the Co-Principal Trumpet of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra in Norway.

He has also been guest soloist with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra.

In addition to professional work, he has played principal cornet with outstanding brass bands, notably Desford Colliery Dowty, Britannia Building Society, Williams Fairey, Yorkshire Building Society and the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain.

After leaving the RNCM as a student, he became a Junior Fellow in teaching and taught trumpet and cornet for eight years.

He has also been a guest lecturer at the Royal College of Music, London, Brisbane Conservatoire, Australia, the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, Glasgow and the Grieg Academy, Bergen, as well as external examiner at the Birmingham Conservatoire. Other adjudicating duties include National and European Brass and Wind Band Championships.

Martin Winter plays lead trumpet with Bergen Big Band, one of the best big bands in Scandinavia. His debut album, A Winters Tale, won multiple awards, one of which received over 12,000 votes. He is a Yamaha artist and, as a soloist, he has given 18 premières and performed in USA, Asia and Europe.

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP JURORS RUSSELL GRAY (SCOTLAND)

Russell Gray’s career as a conductor began in 1998, when he was appointed as the Musical Director of Stavanger Brass Band (Norway).

Since then his reputation as an authoritative interpreter of brass band music has been acknowledged at home and aboard. Since 2008, he has been principal conductor of Molde Brass Band (Norway) and is Adjunct Professor of Brass at Queensland University (Australia). He has enjoyed considerable success within the world of brass band competitions with leading ensembles in Norway, Denmark, Finland, France, Switzerland, Japan, New Zealand, Australia and Switzerland. Russell Gray enjoyed periods as the principal conductor of Foden’s, Fairey and Leyland brass bands and since 2012 has been Principal Conductor of Reg Vardy Band.

Russell Gray was born near Glasgow and came to prominence within the world of brass bands as a cornet virtuoso. During his student years, he was a member of Black Dyke Mills Band and went on to enjoy a number of years as principal cornet of the Leyland Band. He has also produced six solo albums, including two acclaimed releases featuring historic cornet repertoire from the celebrated Arban collection of solos and studies.

Russell Gray has conducted the National Youth Brass Bands of Switzerland and Queensland (Australia) and, in 2014, was appointed Artistic Director of the National Youth Brass Band of Scotland.

Following post-graduate study at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Russell Gray’s career also embraces the worlds of orchestral and wind band music. He has appeared as guest conductor with the Cambrian Philharmonic (Wales), the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, BohuslavMartinu Philharmonic (Czech Republic), Queensland Pops Orchestra (Australia), HM Band of the Coldstream Guards (London),the Royal Life Guards Band (Denmark) and the Norwegian Navy Band (Bergen).

JAN DE HAAN (THE NETHERLANDS)

BLAISE HÉRITIER (SWITZERLAND)

Jan de Haan was born in the Frisian village of Warns, in the Netherlands. He was attracted to conducting from an early age and, by the age of 17, was already the conductor of several bands. He studied music education, trombone and conducting, and worked as a guest conductor with a number of professional and amateur bands and ensembles. He has travelled extensively throughout Western Europe, the USA, Iran and Japan.

Jan de Haan has conducted famous bands such as the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra, Desford Colliery, Brighouse and Rastrick, Soli Brass, all four Dutch military concert bands, the Frisian Symphony Orchestra and the Radio Wind Ensemble.

During the 1980s, Jan de Haan was also a conductor, composer and arranger for Dutch television. As well as working as a guest conductor, composer and international jury member, Jan de Haan was the founder of De Haske Publications, which started in 1983. He sold his shares in the company 25 years later, in 2008, so that he could dedicate his time to composing, arranging and conducting.

This is the fifth time that Jan de Haan has been an EBBC jury member.

Blaise Héritier was born in Moudon VD in 1962. He began his career as a trained pianist and percussionist, then went on to study conducting under Pascal Favre at the Conservatory of Lausanne. During this time, he performed in various ensembles and mastered the saxophone and the euphonium.

In 1990, he became a certified wind orchestra conductor and, two years later, under the direction of Jean Balissat, was awarded the higher professional diploma in orchestration for harmonic orchestras, brass band and fanfare.

He currently conducts the Ensemble de Cuivres Jurassiens and the Blasorchester Siebnen, both of which are classed in the Excellence Category. He is also conductor of the EVOCA vocal ensemble, a symphonic choir composed of eighty singers from every corner of the Jura region.

Blaise Héritier has been engaged as guest conductor by various orchestras, most notably the Blasorchester Oberland Thun in 2010-13, the National Youth Orchestra in 2013-14, and the Blasorchester Stadtmusik Luzern in 2014.

Blaise Héritier and his ensembles frequently stage concerts in Switzerland and abroad. He has been president of the National Music for Wind committee since 2004 and frequently acts as invited expert at music competitions across Switzerland and abroad. He devotes much of his time to orchestrating pieces for wind instruments and percussion. In addition, he has created and put together a variety of artistic projects combining music with other art forms.

He was appointed cultural ambassador of the canton of Jura in 2013 and won the prestigious Stephen Jaeggi prize in 2016. In recognition of an extraordinary creative career, Blaise Héritier has been granted the municipality of Courrendlin’s Decoration of Cultural Merit on three separate occasions.

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP JURORS ERIK JANSSEN (THE NETHERLANDS)

Erik Janssen (1966) studied trumpet and conducting at the conservatory of Amsterdam. He is well known in the brass band world through his successful work with leading bands in his homeland and the UK. He was the first ‘European’ conductor in the 96-year history of the Spring Festival Championships (UK) to win the Grand Shield on his debut as conductor of Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band. Between 2010 and 2014, Erik Janssen led Brass Band Schoonhoven to a remarkable run of eight wins from eight contests, including four national championships, three at Eurobrass and the Flemish Open Championship.

He has appeared six times as a conductor of a competing band at the European Championship. BB Schoonhoven’s top placed performances of Audivi Media Nocte (Waespi) in the 2012 Own-Choice competition in Rotterdam remains his favourite. He was the Musical Director of the European Youth Brass Band at the 2016 ‘European’ in Lille.

From 2006 to 2016, Erik Janssen was conductor of the professional military band of the Koninklijke Marechaussee. He was Artistic Director of Molenaar Edition for 25 years, during which he produced over 50 albums. Erik works regularly as adjudicator and guest conductor throughout Europe. He loves to work at the highest level but is also much in demand as an educator and works with youth ensembles at all levels.

JOSEPH PARISI (USA)

Joseph Parisi is the principal conductor of Fountain City Brass Band and Summit Brass at the Rafael Méndez Brass Institute. Both groups have a rich and distinguished history of outstanding brass playing and, under Dr. Parisi’s leadership, Fountain City Brass Band leads the USA as one of the world’s top brass bands. He has been nominated numerous times for Brass Band Conductor of the Year Award and received the winning conductor award at the Scottish Open Championship in 2009. Fountain City Brass Band has recorded several albums, and the latest recording, Celtic Impressions, has received widespread praise for its ensemble precision, excitement and musicality.

Joseph Parisi is a professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance (UMKC), where he conducts the Conservatory Wind Ensemble and serves as a music education and conducting faculty member. Recognised as one of the most wellrounded faculty members at UMKC, Joseph Parisi has amassed an impressive career as a conductor, performing artist, pedagogue and scholar. He has made professional appearances both nationally and abroad conducting music festivals, adjudicating ensembles, presenting clinics, research, lectures and workshops throughout the USA, Canada, Europe, UK and China.

IAN PORTHOUSE (ENGLAND)

Ian Porthouse began his musical career aged nine with Flimby Saxhorn Silver Band in Cumbria. His father was principal cornet and his mother a singer and pianist. Ian became principal cornet of Leyland Vehicles Band aged 17 and also led the National Youth Brass Band for three years. A move to Desford Colliery with James Watson proved to be the start of a very successful relationship, which continued when Ian was offered the principal cornet position with Black Dyke. Further success came with YBS and Ian’s last position as a full-time player was with Fairey under Allan Withington, winning two National titles in succession.

He accepted the position of conductor with Tredegar Town Band in 2007 and, since then, the band has progressed to be one of the world’s leading ensembles. In 2010, it became the first band in history to win the Grand Shield and British Open titles in the same year. Tredegar repeated this British Open victory in 2013.

Ian Porthouse is Head of Brass Band Studies at Birmingham Conservatoire.

He is also professional conductor of Brass Band Oberösterreich, the former Austrian champion, and music advisor of Ensemble de Cuivres Valaisan, one of Switzerland’s premier brass bands.

Ian Porthouse and Tredegar Band continue to work closely with the students at Birmingham Conservatoire. During 2016, he became the first conductor to qualify three bands for the European Brass Band Championships, gaining National titles in Wales, Netherlands and Austria.

BAYERISCHEN BRASS BAND AKADEMIE (THOMAS LUDESCHER) - GERMANY The 3BA Concert Band was founded in April 2005 as one of the first brass bands in Germany. The band belongs to the Bavarian Brass Band Academy and is the current German Brass Band Champion, a title it has won every time since it started in 2007. The band took part in the ‘B’ Section competition of the EBBC from 2008 to 2010, winning in 2009 and finishing in second place in 2008 and 2010. In 2012, 3BA Concert Band played in the Championship Section at the Flemish Open in Mechelen (Belgium) and in July 2013 was runner-up in the 1st Division of the World Music Contest in Kerkrade (Netherlands).

By again winning the German Brass Band Championship in 2014, 3BA Concert Band was the first German band to qualify to play in the EBBC Championship Section and took part at the competition in Freiburg, Germany.

Since 2015, it has also enjoyed a partnership with Geneva Instruments and, in 2016, received an excellent ninth place at the European Championships in Lille, France. One week later, 3BA Concert Band won the German Championships in Bad Kissingen and, as a result, qualified for last year’s European Championship in Oostende.

Thomas Ludescher has been the Musical Director of the Bavarian Brass Band Academy since 2015. He is one of the most important Austrian conductors, composers and arrangers, and lecturer for band conducting at the national music academies at Vorarlberg and Tirol (Austria) and at the University of Augsburg (Germany).

CONCORD BRASS BAND (JESPER JUUL WINDAHL) - DENMARK Concord Brass Band returns to the European Brass Band Championships for the first time since 2014, when it performed in Perth, Scotland. During the last two decades, the band has improved its technical and musical level and now comprises skilled professional musicians and talented amateurs. The word ‘Concord’ means ‘unity and joy’ - words that describe core values and fellowship, which musicians in the band are proud to represent, and it is this ‘concord’ of values alongside hard work that made Concord Brass Band the Danish Champion in 2016.

The band was established in Copenhagen in 1957 by the ‘father’ of Danish brass banding, Herbert Møller, arguably becoming the first secular band in Europe outside the UK and making a major impression on banding culture both in Denmark and throughout Europe.

In 2012 and ‘13, the band performed at both the Saddleworth Whit Friday march contests and the AllEngland Masters International Championships in Kettering. Concord Brass Band looks to the future with both hope and great expectations.

CORY BAND (PHILIP HARPER) - WALES Cory Band hails from the Rhondda Valley in South Wales. It was formed in 1884 and originally bore the name Ton Temperance. In 1895, Sir Clifford Cory, the local colliery owner, heard the band and offered to provide financial assistance, resulting in the band’s change of name to Cory.

Cory first became National Champion of Great Britain in 1974 and, in 1980, became European Champion for the first time. In 1984, its centenary year, Cory won the third in a hat-trick of National titles at the Royal Albert Hall, London, conducted by Major Arthur Kenney. In 2000, the band achieved an historic double by winning both the National and, for the first time in its history, the British Open, conducted by Dr. Robert Childs. In 20082010, Cory achieved a hat-trick of European Brass Band Championship titles.

Since 2012, the band has been conducted by Philip Harper, winning two further European titles (2013 and 2016), three Nationals (2013, 2015 and 2016), the British Open (2016) and four Brass in Concert titles (2012, 2013, 2015 and 2016), including an historic ‘Grand Slam’ in 2016. It toured Australia in 2013 and the USA in February 2016, 40 years after its last visit there. Cory has been ranked number one brass band in the world for the past 11 years and 2018 is a record 16th consecutive year that the band will have competed at the European Championships.

DE WÂLDSANG (RIEKS VAN DER VELDE) - THE NETHERLANDS Brass Band De Wâldsang has its roots and its pride in Friesland, the Northern part of The Netherlands.

Although The Netherlands has a rich tradition of wind and fanfare bands, brass bands are a relatively new phenomenon. In the 1970s a lot of fanfare-bands converted to all brass in the sparsely populated areas of Friesland. The reason was as simple as clever: a brass band requires fewer musicians than a wind or fanfare band to form a well-balanced ensemble!

In 1977, a couple of enthusiastic music students formed their own brass band and called it De Wâldsang, an old Frysian name meaning ‘the sound of the forest’. Their aim was to excel and they succeeded; De Wâldsang was one of the first Dutch bands to play at the highest level.

With 15 wins since 1982, it has won more Dutch national titles than any other band.

In the 40 years of the band’s existence, many generations of talented players have contributed to the warm sound for which De Wâldsang is known. The band is highly valued on stages all over Europe and has an interesting annual schedule, with a mixture of concerts, performances with other ensembles, TV and CD recordings and, of course, national and international festivals and contests.

Utrecht Brass An international programme to support and promote the wind music scene in Utrecht. With events on local, national and international level ZIMIHC stimulates connections between orchestras and musicians from Utrecht and abroad. Concerts with wind orchestras from Estonia and Hong Kong, meet and great with conductors from the UK and events as WASBE International Symphonic Wind Band Festival already took place in Utrecht.

Utrecht Sings An international programme to support and promote the choral community in Utrecht. With events on local, national and international level ZIMIHC stimulates connections between singers and conductors from Utrecht and abroad.

The Holland House 2018 within the Europa Cantat Festival in Tallin (Estonia), the Holland House 2015 within the Europa Cantat Festival in Pècs (Hungary), the Sing Me In research project, the EuroChoir 2017, concerts by the Batavia Madrigal Singers, workshops by conductors Maria van Nieukerken and Peter Dijkstra are examples how ZIMIHC works together with a national and international network.

Tandem & Theatres

A one year programme by ZIMIHC theater Zuilen to exchange best practices on amateur arts and community arts together with likewise international partners. Besides this theatre in Zuilen ZIMIHC also runs ZIMIHC theater Stefanus and ZIMIHC theater Wittevrouwen. With these three theatres ZIMIHC focus on local amateur arts and its needs. Therefore ZIMIHC is able to connect international events to the local community.

ZIMIHC is the organisation for amateur art in the city and region of Utrecht.

ZIMIHC develops programs for all different types of art. Three theatres and a department for festivals and projects provide together with an interactive website a platform for amateur artists. EIKANGER-BJØRSVIK MUSIKKLAG (INGAR H. BERGBY) - NORWAY Eikanger-Bjørsvik Musikklag has been one of the leading brass bands in Europe for the past 30 years, performing a large span of high-quality repertoire in high-profile events in Norway and the rest of the continent. The band is the product of bands founded in 1949 and 1951 in respective neighbouring villages of Eikanger and Bjørsvik, which amalgamated in 1971 and went on to compete in the first Norwegian Brass Band Championship in 1979, winning its first title two years later.

Eikanger-Bjørsvik has gone on to win the Norwegian Brass Band Championships a record-breaking total of 18 times, including from 2011-2014. In 1988, it became the first band from outside the UK to win the European Championships when it took the title in Lucerne under Howard Snell. The following year, Eikanger-Bjørsvik repeated this success in Bergen, although it had to wait a further 28 to add a third title in Oostende last year.

In 2004, Eikanger-Bjørsvik became the first brass band ensemble to receive support from the Norwegian Council and in recent years the band has performed in events including the Bergen Festival, the Norwegian Arts Festival, Bergen Media Festival and the Saddleworth Festival of Music and Arts. In addition, the band has an outstanding reputation for high-quality recordings, including the award-winning Art of the States, Tales and Stories, 20 Supreme Years - the Music of Howard Snell, Chatham Dances and Romeo and Juliet.

Eikanger-Bjørsvik will again be conducted by the Norwegian orchestral conductor Ingar H. Bergby. The combination has worked together many times over the last two decades, including winning two Norwegian and one European title.

FAIREY (GARRY CUTT) - ENGLAND Founded in 1937 by a group of employees at the Fairey Aviation Works in Stockport, England, the band achieved many musical successes under the brilliant direction of Harry Mortimer, its Musical Director for over 30 years.

Since those early days, the Fairey has been 16 times British Open Champion and National Champion of Great Britain on nine occasions, including back-to-back National wins in 2002 and 2003. Victories in the European Championship, BBC Best of Brass and Granada Band of the Year titles add further touches of distinction to this famous band.

Since its formation the band has seen an illustrious line-up of conductors that comprises Harry Mortimer, Richard Evans, Walter Hargreaves, Geoffrey Brand, Major Peter Parkes, Roy Newsome, James Gourlay, Howard Snell, Allan Withington and Garry Cutt. Fairey Band is in constant demand for concerts, both at home and abroad. Overseas tours have included performances in Canada, Hong Kong, Switzerland, Sweden, France, Germany, Holland, Belgium and Luxembourg.

In recent years, the band has enjoyed further recognition outside the confines of brass banding, with the Acid Brass project. Under this banner, the band has been able to display its flexibility in adapting to a totally different musical concept and, consequently, has performed in rock and pop festivals in the UK and overseas.

The band won the European Championships in Montreux, Switzerland in 1994 and was runner-up in 1987, ‘93 and ‘95. Fairey represents England this weekend for the sixth time.

Time for Outrage!

(Marco Pütz - adapted for brass band by Paul McGhee) Time for Outrage! was commissioned in 2014 by the Friends of the Luxembourg Military Band and first performed by the band on 26 March 2015. It was adapted for fanfare band to a commission from the Gelders Fanfare Orkest for a work to perform at the 2017 World Music Contest. In November 2017, Marco Pütz was invited by EBBA and ZIMIHC to make the work available as the set test for the 41st European Brass Band Championships. With the composer’s agreement and co-operation, the English composer and editor Paul McGhee has been commissioned to adapt and edit the work for brass band.

Marco Pütz describes Time for Outrage! as ‘an expression of my personal aversion against all the current crises and injustice of any kind in the world. I am aware that I cannot alleviate or even eradicate these crises with my music, but as a free citizen I believe I have the right to express my indignation through music.’

Time for Outrage! is in three movements. The first, Breaking Silence, begins almost eerily quiet. A series of solos unfolds and the silence is broken by a broadly built crescendo and climax, after which the music quietens down again. In the outrage appears to be silent. The second part, Troubled, voices the composer’s fear and anxiety. The presto finale, Rock the Culprits!, the culprits are driven relentlessly to the end of the composition. Pütz hides his weakness in the hopeless struggle against injustice behind a mild sarcasm. ‘The perpetrators are not punished but “rocked”’, he says, adding, ‘If you are not outraged, you are not paying attention. In other words, if you are not outraged by what is happening in the world today, you walk with blinkers on.’

Marco Pütz (b.1958) is a highly-regarded prize-winning composer for wind instruments and symphonic wind band. Born in Luxembourg, his musical studies (saxophone, composition and conducting) took him to Brussels and Liège. Since 1987 he has composed more than 85 works, primarily for winds, but he has also composed a children’s musical, chamber music and works for symphony orchestra. In October last year he received the BUMA International Brass Award (The Netherlands) in acknowledgement of his contribution to the band repertoire.

Paul McGhee (b. 1980) began composing at school in Corby (Northamptonshire) when he was 17.

Since graduating from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, his music has been widely performed at concerts, competitions and festivals. In 2012 Lullaby received first prize at European Composers competition in Rotterdam. Paul has received the best new composition/arrangement award at the Brass in Concert Championship on two occasions and has also been shortlisted twice for a British Composer Award (BASCA), in 2013 for His Sympathy, and in 2014 for his Euphonium concerto Kjeden.

Compére Stein Skorpholm Stein Skorpholm (b.1971) is a well-known figure within the Norwegian band movement. He has presented the Norwegian National Brass Band Championships for the last 12 years, as well as the same event for wind bands. Stein has also been used as a presenter at many other concerts and competitions, amongst them Siddis Brass in Stavanger. He has served on the regional board of the Norges Musikkorps Forbund (NMF) for many years. Stein conducts bands and plays the trombone and piano. He has hosted his own television show about classical music for the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK). Music is a great part of Stein’s life, and he has great knowledge of music history, gathering countless stories not just about the music, but also about conductors, musicians and composers.

BRASS BAND FRÖSCHL HALL (CORSIN TUOR) - AUSTRIA Brass Band Fröschl Hall was founded in 1986 by Hannes Buchegger as Austria’s first brass band. After the first years of intensive involvement with brass band music, the band finally participated in the European Brass Band Championships ‘B’ Section, winning it four times: 1994 in Montreux, 1997 in London, 1998 in Kerkrade and 1999 in Munich.

In 2010, Brass Band Fröschl Hall was invited to EBBC in Linz featuring the finalists of the European Soloist Competition as part of the opening concert. This exceptional development was possible not only because of the musical talent of the Austrian musicians, but especially because of the generous financial support of a local construction company, FRÖSCHL BAU, which has been sponsoring the Haller ensemble since 1996.

Since 2017 Brass Band Fröschl Hall has been directed by the Swiss conductor Corsin Tuor. Together with him, the band won the Austrian National Brass Band Competition’s Championship Section for the first time and so has the honour of representing Austria at the 2018 European Brass Band Championships. The band and its conductor are really looking forward to their first participation at the highest European competition level for brass bands.

HAUTS-DE-FRANCE BRASS BAND (LUC VERTOMMEN) - FRANCE Founded for the occasion of a summer tour in 1992, the Hauts-de-France Brass Band (formerly Brass Band Nord Pas-de-Calais) is currently one of most successful bands in France. Located in the city of Oignies, the Hauts-deFrance Brass Band is actively working on projects like concerts or competitions in which it participates every year. The band also has an educational aim and wishes to promote the brass banding via masterclasses or with the Academy created in 2011, which brings together hundreds of young musicians from the north of France.

The Hauts-de-France Brass Band, conducted by Luc Vertommen, is composed of professional musicians, conservatory music teachers, international competition winners, music students and amateurs. Most of the young players took part in the academy of the band.

The band has won several major titles since its creation, including the French Championships (2009, 2010, 2011 and 2017) the French Open Championships (2015) and European Brass Band Championship ‘B’ Section (2002).

STAVANGER BRASS BAND (ALLAN WITHINGTON) - NORWAY Stavanger Brass Band was founded in 1981 and has been one of the leading Norwegian bands since then. The band has won the Norwegian national title no less than nine times since it started and has won several other contest titles throughout the years. The entertainment contest Siddis Brass is hosted by Stavanger Brass Band in November every year and attracts more than 50 bands.

Siddis Brass is an important arena for new repertoire and developing entertainment concepts for brass bands internationally. Stavanger Brass Band has been the winner of the championship section in this competition a total of eight times.

Stavanger Brass Band has actively commissioned new music from Norwegian composers of different genres, ranging from contemporary, jazz and orchestral to organ music. For many years the band has been a driving force within the innovative trends in Norwegian banding.

This reputation has paved the way for invitations to play at prestigious events and festivals in Norway and internationally. Stavanger Brass Band has been in the forefront among Norwegian bands when it comes to touring activities. Since 2000, the band has toured to England, Scotland, USA, Netherlands, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania and France - several times to some of the countries

VALAISIA BRASS BAND (ARSÉNE DUC) - SWITZERLAND Valaisia Brass Band was formed in 2008, in the canton of Valais, in the French speaking part of Switzerland.

The band is composed of established musicians from the region, as well as very young players, products of the thriving Valaisan brass band scene. The ensemble counts in its ranks several Valaisan and Swiss solo champions.

Valaisia Brass Band took part in the Swiss National Championships for the first time in 2008. It won the top section title in 2009, 2015, 2016 and 2017. In 2013, the band won the Swiss Open Contest in Lucerne.

Last year, Valaisia Brass Band made history by becoming the first band from the continent to win the British Open, with founding conductor Arsène Duc receiving the Harry Mortimer conductor prize.

2018 will see Valaisia Brass Band representing Switzerland for the fourth time in the European Championships. After being placed third in 2016 in Lille and a runner-up in Oostende last year, the musicians and are looking forward to carrying the Swiss flag at the EBBC in Utrecht.

WHITBURN BAND (PROFESSOR NICHOLAS CHILDS) - SCOTLAND Whitburn Band, the current Scottish, Scottish Open and British Open Grand Shield brass band champion, was formed in the heart of the coal mining area of West Lothian in 1870 and originally served as an outlet for members of the mining community to perform at local parades and gala days.

Its first major contesting impact came in 1954 when it became the first Scottish band to secure a National title by winning the 3rd section competition in London. In 1968, Whitburn won its first Scottish Championship title.

Success continued during the early 1970s, but following the appointment of Major Peter Parkes in 1978, Whitburn began to dominate the Scottish brass band scene and became a regular prizewinner in the major band contests including the European Brass Band Championships.

The band has been Scottish champion 20 times in its history - including three times in the past five years under the direction of Professor Nicholas Childs.

Today, Whitburn Band continues to make a significant contribution to cultural life in Scotland, performing regularly at major events such as international rugby games, at which television audiences numbering in the millions hear Whitburn perform the national anthem of Scotland’s opponents.

BRASS BAND WILLEBROEK (FRANS VIOLET) - BELGIUM Frans Violet founded Brass Band Willebroek in 1979. The band initially existed and worked within the framework and structure of the Municipal Music Academy of Willebroek. Since 1985, BBW has been an independent non-profitmaking association.

The band has recorded three studio albums and Elgar Variations (2007) was awarded the BBC Radio 2 Listen to the Band Album of the Year. As Cultural Ambassador of its city, Brass Band Willebroek has played many concerts and has entered contests all over Europe. In winning the European Championships for the first time, in Plymouth in 1993, it became the first continental band ever to do so while being led by a continental conductor.

The band regained the European title in 2006 and 2007, and holds the record for Belgian National titles, with 20 in total. In 2017, Brass Band Willebroek wrote another page in the history books by becoming the first Belgian band to win the WMC World Championships in Kerkrade, The Netherlands.

Mystic Echoes (Hendrik de Boer) Mystic Echoes was commissioned by ZIMIHC for the Challenge Section of the 41st European Brass Band Championships at TivoliVrendenburg, Utrecht, on 5 May 2018.

Hendrik de Boer has dedicated the work to ‘my good friend Chris van der Veen.

The both of us were the euphonium section of Soli Brass, Leeuwarden, at the 2006 European Championships in Belfast. This was the first European Championships in which I took part as a player.’

The title Mystic Echoes is a reference to the so-called Mystic or Prometheus chord created by the Russian composer Alexander Scriabin (1871 - 1915) and upon which much of his later music is founded. Hendrik de Boer flavours Mystic Echoes with the harmonic characteristics of the six-note chord - a hexachord comprising perfect fourths and their more ambiguous augmented and diminished ‘relatives’, This and the scale that derives from it provide the structure and character of Hendrik de Boer’s.

Mystic Echoes is in three movements. The first consists of two parts. Part one establishes two contrasting moods; one resolute, with strict rhythmic patterns and technical passages, and the second mysterious, with lyrical lines, tense sound textures and solo contributions from cornet and euphonium. The second part develops the material with some recognisable major and minor chords, derived from the mystical chord, and ends heroically.

The second movement begins in a solemn mood that may suggest a procession, which at its climax transforms into a more mysterious mood. The movement ends in triumph, but with a mysterious coda.

Alexander Scriabin (1871 - 1915)

The final movement begins in a trance-like mood, with rousing rhythms and wide dynamic effects. This then alternates with the resolute mood from the first movement.

The work ends with an heroic and triumphant apotheosis.

Hendrik de Boer (b. 1986) is an experienced brass band musician. He was principal euphonium of Soli Brass for ten years (2003-2013) and, since 2015, has fulfilled the solo baritone role with Brass Band de Wâldsang. He also plays euphonium in the Fanfare Orchestra of the National Reserve and is a busy conductor and teacher of wind and brass. In recent years, Hendrik de Boer has also been involved in making a number of high-profile arrangements for brass band and is now also increasingly active as a composer.

BADISCHE BRASS BAND (DOMINIK M. KOCH) - GERMANY Badische Brass Band was formed in 2010 by Dominik M. Koch and other passionate brass players from Baden-Württemberg/ Germany. The traditional British-style brass band is made up of ambitious amateur musicians, music students and professional musicians. The band strives to be a pioneer in the region and in Baden-Württemberg as an audition-only ensemble playing at an advanced level. It rehearses on a project basis and performs several concerts every year. Its goal is to popularise the genre and its literature, which are little-known in Germany and in Baden-Württemberg. The band also aims to give experienced musicians and talented young players the opportunity to experience extraordinary musical moments and to develop as musicians. Therefore it works together with international teachers and visiting conductors.

Badische Brass Band first participated in the German Brass Band Championships in 2012, winning the 1st prize in the ‘C’ Section. In 2014, the band competed at ‘B’ Section for the first time and was placed fourth. It took second place in the ‘B’ Section at the 2015 German Open in Grimma and at the 2016 German Brass Band Championships in Bad Kissingen. Last year the band won a Gold Medal with Distinction in the 2nd Division of the World Music Contest in Kerkrade.

As well as participating regularly in competitions, Badische Brass Band gives two or three spring concerts every year as well as a church concert in autumn. The band has been conducted by Dominik M. Koch since its formation.

GÖTA BRASS BAND (MICHAEL THOMSEN) - SWEDEN Göta Brass Band was founded in February 2015 and consists of musicians from all over the southern half of Sweden. They came together because of their appreciation of the brass band as an ensemble and a genre, a passion all of the band shares. A core value is the will to inspire others, preferably younger, musicians and to promote the Swedish brass band movement in general.

Göta Brass Band competes in the Elite Section at the Swedish National Brass Band Championships. After finishing third in 2015 and 2016, the band managed to win its first National title in 2017 under the direction of Danish conductor Christian Schmiedescamp. Following his recent move to Israel, the band will in Utrecht be conducted by Michael Thomsen, who is also the resident conductor of Lyngby Taarbaek Band in Denmark.

ITALIAN BRASS BAND (FILIPPO CANGIAMILA) - ITALY Although the Italian Brass Band is relatively young, it has already enjoyed considerable success. It was founded in November 2013, brainchild of four professional musicians who, fascinated by the world of brass bands, dreamed of creating one in Rome. The plan was hatched in a local bar, after which the four friends then looked for possible members within the ranks of the top professional bands, orchestras and ensembles in the city. Thus the Italian Brass Band was born. Since then, the band has played frequently throughout the whole of Italy, garnering much applause and appreciation for the outstanding quality of performance, the high technical demands of the repertory and the technical skills and musicianship of the soloists.

In 2015, the band won the EBBC Challenge Section in Freiburg (Germany) and took second prize the same event in Lille (France) in 2016 before regaining the title in 2017.

It won an historic first prize at the inaugural Italian Brass Band Championships in Ascoli Piceno in 2016 and retained the title in Eppan last year. Since 2013, the band has been conducted by Filippo Cangiamila.

LAGANVALE (METAL TECHNOLOGY) BAND (STEPHEN CROOKS) - NORTHERN IRELAND Laganvale Band was originally formed in 1908 as a temperance flute band to give local men a recreational outlet. The bandhall is located in the Stranmillis area of Belfast, next to the River Lagan.

It switched to brass instruments in 1938 and became known as Laganvale Silver. In 2004, it was pleased to secure sponsorship in from local company Metal Technology Ltd. Laganvale Band has a long history of contesting and it has won the Northern Ireland Band Association Championships on ten occasions. It has also enjoyed success in other local contests.

It regularly competes at the British Open Spring Festival in Blackpool, with second place in the Senior Trophy in 2013 a recent highlight.

The band has competed three times at the EBBC (1996, 2006 and 2007). It was placed third in the Challenge Section in both 2006 and ’07, and it was a particular honour to represent Northern Ireland on home soil in 2006 at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast.

Laganvale Band and conductor Stephen Crooks are very much looking forward to performing at the 2018 EBBC in Utrecht.

SUNDAY BRASS (TADAS SILEIKA) - LITHUANIA In 2014, Tadas Ĺ ileika, a composer, orchestral musician and conductor, invited his friends and former students to start a new orchestra. This was the beginning of the Sunday Brass Band, with its name deriving from the day chosen for rehearsals. Today, the band consists of the musicians having outgrown their first youth bands, and the bandmasters who still retain the joy of making music.

With its relatively small number of concerts, Sunday Brass Band strives to entertain the audience with its original programmes and, frequently, repertoire that is little known in Lithuania.

The band made its contesting debut at the 2017 European Championships in Oostende and the musicians are both excited and honoured to again represent their country on the international stage.

The group was founded in 2005 by the oboist and shawm specialist Katharina Bäuml. Through over 1,000 concerts, 20 CDs to date and numerous live recordings, the ensemble has garnered extensive experience in the music of the 14th to 17th centuries.

In order to make the music of past centuries sound fresh for modern ears, current historical and musicological research plays a vital role in Capella de la Torre’s programmes. Especially important is the work with original sources and texts. In addition to concerts, another focus of the ensemble is its work with young audiences though numerous outreach and education projects.

The name Capella de la Torre can be understood two ways: in the beginning of the 16th century, the Spaniard Francisco de la Torre composed perhaps the most famous piece for a wind ensemble, his Danza Alta. In addition to this homage to the composer, the name can be understood literally. ‘de la torre’ means ‘from the top of the tower’. Wind ensembles of the time often played from the top of towers and on balconies.

Jos Groenier (director) Jos Groenier studied stage design at the Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp, Belgium, obtained his masters degree at the Jan van Eyck academy in Maastricht and studied percussion at Conservatorium Arnhem and Art history at the Rijksuniversteit Utrecht. He started as an independent director-designer (theatre/opera/ musical theatre), mainly in Utrecht, producing for the Holland Festival of Ancient Music, Camarata Trajectina, U.T.I. followed by invitations from all over Holland. These included Haagse Comedie, De Appel, Het Nationale Toneel, Theater van het Oosten, Joop van de Ende’s Stage Holding and were followed by invitations from Antwerp and Brussels (Belgium), Copenhagen (Denmark), Harbin (China), Cologne (Germany), Kautokeino, Tromsø, Molde and Oslo (Norway), Rome (Italy), Istanbul (Turkey), Krakow (Poland), Kiev and Odessa (Ukraine), London and Liverpool (UK) and Jakarta (Indonesia).

Groenier was honoured to produce several baroque operas for the Dutch Queen, in order to be offered as State Present to the Danish Queen, Norwegian King and Italian President. Since 2001, he has developed multi-discipline performances combining theatre, staging, music, opera, dance, film and circus. He received the P.U.G. Award for founding the U.T.I. and the Norwegian State prize for the most outstanding performance and direction (Good Person of Sezuan).

Uri Rapaport

K.O. Brass!

Lighting designer Uri Rapaport started his career in 1978 as a lighting director and technical manager for the Stadsschouwburg Utrecht. In 1996, he started his own company specialising in lighting design. After this he made designs again for this theatre in Utrecht (especially circus performances and events) among many others. He worked in Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, France, Israel, Greece, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Russia, USA and UK. He designed for special events in several Dutch and international cities. The biggest event he worked on was the opening of the Gay Games Amsterdam in the Amsterdam Arena, presented for 60,000 and broadcast live all over the world.

Rapaport worked for The National Theatre (The Hague), Holland Festival, Wiener Festwoche, Opera of Geneva, The National Opera (Amsterdam), The Opera of Krakau, Theatre Akropolis, and Theatre Thesaloniki. He also works on Musical Productions such as The Sound of Music, Sunset Boulevard, Passion, Jesus Christ Superstar, High School Musical, The End of the Rainbow, Larry and all Sondheim musicals, and many operas like Cosi Fan Tutte, Fidelio, Legende, Laika, Hamlet, Medee, Der Zauberflote, L’ipermestra and Don Pasquale.

Uri Rapaport has been nominated four times for best design in the John Kraaijkamp Musical award and once for best design (Opera Legende The National Opera).

K.O. Brass! (Knockout Brass!) is not your average brass quintet. In its performances it breaks with conventions and presents a unique ‘in-your-face’ blend of sound.

Original compositions give room to improvisations. To this the group adds its own take on well-known songs. Five different nationalities create a synergy. Through this synergy they deliver a dynamic performance which is pure and vibrant. Each individual member has developed his own craftsmanship and, when put together, they create a powerful performance, after which you will be knocked out!

Utrecht, Caravaggio and Europe, 1600-1630 15 December 2018 to 24 March 2019

Caravaggio and Gala Concert EBBC2018 This winter, Centraal Museum Utrecht is organising a major exhibition about early 17th century painters of the European Caravaggist movement, including Utrecht painters. For ZIMIHC, the local organiser of EBBC2018, this was reason to link the real-life expressionism of Caravaggio and his tempting way of using colours to the principal theme of the Gala Concert. This means that contemporary brass band practice will be presented alongside its roots: the rich, archaic Renaissance sound of Capella de la Torre, and the modern, vivid and provocative sound of K.O. Brass! from Utrecht. The Gala Concert will be a visual and musical choreography in the spirit of Caravaggio.

At the start of the Dutch Golden Age, Rome was the centre of the world. Young painters from across Europe made their way to the Eternal City, where – so the rumour went – the painter Caravaggio had caused a revolution. A new realism in the art of painting, unparalleled drama, grand gestures and mysteries of light: everyone wanted to see it for themselves. Among them were the Utrecht painters Dirck van Baburen, Hendrick ter Brugghen and Gerard van Honthorst.

Together in Rome, but each remaining true to their roots During the heyday of European Caravaggism, between 1600-1630, some 2700 artists were listed in Rome, of which 572 were foreigners. They all visited the same churches and viewed the same collections. They conversed with each other, and of course they painted! And they painted the same themes, used the same sources of inspiration, but the works they produced were nonetheless very different.

Utrecht, Caravaggio and Europe examines precisely these differences between the European followers of Caravaggio.

4 and 5 May in the Netherlands Not just ordinary days Every year on 4 May, the Netherlands commemorates the Dutch victims of wartime violence. On 5 May we celebrate our freedom.

Remembrance The national commemoration of Remembrance Day in the Netherlands takes place on 4 May, at 8pm. At that moment, two minutes of silence are observed throughout the country to commemorate Dutch victims of war. A remembrance ceremony is held on Dam Square in Amsterdam in the presence of the head of state, various representatives of both the Council of Ministers of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the Parliament, and around 20.000 people.

This national commemoration of Remembrance Day is held simultaneously with local commemoration ceremonies in nearly every town and city in the Netherlands. Local wind music societies often play a role in these ceremonies by taking care of the musical elements.

Two minutes of silence At 8pm, the entire country is silent for two minutes. Those two minutes of silence are announced by means of the ‘Taptoe’, the Dutch counterpart of the British bugle call known as the ‘Last Post’. For two minutes one hears nothing but the flutter of flags and the cooing of doves. The Netherlands is remembering its dead. Following the two minutes of silence, the first verse of the Dutch national anthem ‘het Wilhelmus’ is played. Then the winner of a poetry contest for young people will recite his or her poem. A number of survivors then lay a total of five wreaths on the National Monument.

On 4 May, all shops are required by law to close by 7pm. The vast majority of the cafés, bars and restaurants, including casinos, also comply with the National Committee’s request to honour the two minutes of silence. Football matches and large pop concerts are temporarily brought to a halt, just as – in our case – the Test Piece competition. In recent years, even numerous online social networks have made it a point to encourage users to honour the two minutes of silence on 4 May.

Celebration After the ceremonies and commemorations on the evening of 4 May, the morning of 5 May forms a bridge to the celebration of freedom. The Netherlands celebrates the fact that the country was liberated in 1945 from both the German occupation in Europe and the Japanese occupation in Asia, and that, since then, the Kingdom of the Netherlands has been free from war and oppression. The date 5 May refers to the day on which the German army capitulated in the Netherlands. We celebrate the absence of war, the restoration of the constitutional state after the Second World War and the fact that this enables us to live in freedom.

Liberation Festivals In the afternoon of 5 May, 14 different Liberation Festivals, one in each province and in Amsterdam and The Hague, are held to celebrate freedom. In addition to performances by countless major performing artists, there are also numerous debates and NGOs such as Amnesty International actively inform visitors about the lack of freedom in the rest of the world. The underlying idea is that 5 May is a holiday that should be celebrated to the full, but that the theme of freedom should also receive as much attention as possible.

At the Liberation Festivals, young people are made aware of the fact that freedom is not something they should take for granted.

JURORS KATRINA MARZELLA WHEELER (SCOTLAND)

Katrina Marzella Wheeler was born in Edinburgh in 1983. Her musical development owes much to her family’s love of music and the rich brass band heritage she encountered growing up in West Lothian, Scotland. She is the solo baritone player of Black Dyke Band.

During her youth, Katrina Marzella won a myriad of competitions and titles, including inaugural BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Soloist of the Year in 2004. She was British Open Solo Champion in 2006 and 2007, Ern Keller International Soloist in 2007 and 2008, runner-up at the 5th European Soloist Competition in 2010 and was awarded the ‘Best Soloist’ award at the 2014 European Brass Band Championships. She studied at postgraduate level at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. As an undergraduate, Katrina read law at the University of Glasgow.

Katrina Marzella Wheeler has travelled extensively across Europe, Asia, Australasia and North America as a soloist, adjudicator, conductor and teacher. She has performed in many iconic venues such as Sydney Opera House, KKL Lucerne and the Royal Albert Hall. She is baritone tutor at the University of Salford and a civilian professor at the Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall.

She is featured as a soloist on numerous commercial CD and DVD recordings, including her debut solo CD, Katrina, which was released to world-wide critical acclaim. Katrina Marzella is passionate about the profile of the baritone horn and continues to break new ground by commissioning and premièring original solo repertoire from some of the genre’s most prolific composers. She was also integral to the development of the Yamaha Neo baritone horn and, as a Yamaha Artist and Clinician, performs exclusively on the instrument she helped design.

RIEKS VAN DER VELDE (THE NETHERLANDS)

Rieks van der Velde was born in 1961 in Lutjegast, Groningen, the Netherlands and studied euphonium and conducting at the Pedagogical Academy of Music in Leeuwarden. In addition to his work as a composer and arranger, he is one of the best-known brass band conductors for brass bands in The Netherlands. With Brass Band De Wâldsang he has built a reputation in national and international competitions as well as fine concert performers. Besides conducting two other brass bands (1st Division Excelsior Zalk and Martini Brass Band Groningen in the 2nd Division) he works as a national and international adjudicator in music contests. In 2002, along with Gerry Procee, Rieks van der Velde started Lake Music Publications to publish music for brass band, concert band and fanfare band.

BRASS BAND AUKŠTYN (PIET VISSER) - LITHUANIA

Brass Band Aukštyn will perform: Rytas ‘the Morning’ (Rimantas Giedraitis), Pastorale (Rimantas Giedraitis), Brass Machine (Mark Taylor, arr. Philip Sparke soloists: Džiugita Bilevičiūtė, Indrė Jonaitytė, Vaiva Bilevičiūtė, Kęsmina Kendarytė, Vakarė Gikytė).

Brass Band Aukštyn (‘Up’) was founded in 2007 in Naujamiestis, a small town in Panevezys region. This region is famous for having a first ever brass band in Lithuania, created in 1998. There are now 12 youth brass bands in the region. Aukštyn collaborates with conductors and musicians from The Netherlands, England and Wales, and the band plays academic, sacred, rock, jazz and other types of music, as well as organising masterclasses and summer band camps. Brass band Aukštyn has given concerts in Latvia, Estonia, The Netherlands and Poland. It also promotes the brass band tradition and its expansion in Lithuania and neighbouring countries. The band participated in the WMC Young generation project in 2017.

The band’s founders are conductor Remigijus Vilys, teachers Ligita Bilevičienė, Saulius Buitvydas, Piet Visser and Steve Legge. The band has been placed fourth in the Development Section and has participated in the EYBBC three times so far. Solo cornet player Indrė Jonaitytė won the Best Soloist award in 2015.

ELLAND SILVER YOUTH (SAMANTHA HARRISON) - ENGLAND Elland Silver Youth Band was formed in 1995 by the band’s current conductor, Samantha Harrison, as a way of sustaining Elland Silver Band into the future. The band is based in Elland, a small town close to Halifax in the Calder Valley of Yorkshire, and is one of the longest established community organisations within the district. It has been very successful at local and national contests, particularly in the field of entertainment, and has performed at some of the country’s finest concert halls including Bridgewater Hall, Sage Gateshead and Symphony Hall, Birmingham. In 2010, the band was awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the ‘MBE’ for volunteer groups, in recognition of its voluntary work and community service.

Elland Silver Youth Brass Band will perform: Summon the Dragon (Peter Graham), Concert Etude (Alexander Goedicke arr. Broughton - cornet soloist: Daniel Clough), Abide With Me (W.H. Monk, arr. Karl Jenkins / Peter Graham).

In 2016 the band won the National Youth Brass Band Intermediate Championship title and, in 2017. was crowned European Youth Band Champion (Development section). The members are delighted once more to be representing England at the European Youth Brass Band Contest.

TASTA SKOLEKORPS (MORTEN ØVREBEKK) - NORWAY

Tasta Skolekorps will perform: Valerius Intrada (Jan de Haan), Sugaria (Erik Sammut, arr. Reid Gilje - marimba soloist: Skage Rollheim), Caravan (Duke Ellington / Juan Tizol arr. Steve Sykes).

Tasta skolekorps (Tasta School Brass Band) is located in Stavanger, Norway, the capital of the Norwegian oil industry. Tasta skolekorps was founded in 1950 and has been of great importance to the local community and to the city. The band is now one of the largest and most highly-regarded school bands in the country.

The players are recruited from three local primary schools and the band currently has 110 members.

Tasta skolekorps is split up into four individual bands with players at different age levels: Junior Band (8-9 years), Intermediate Band (9-10), Youth Band (10-12) and Senior Band (12-19). It is The Senior Band that will represent Tasta Skolekorps at the European Youth Brass Band Contest.

The band’s goal is to remain one of the highest rated school brass bands in Norway, by combining a good social environment in the band with high-quality musical education in co-operation with the City’s cultural school. The band has a high level of activity and the members take part in local, regional and national championships.

The band’s conductor for the last 31 years has been Morten Øvrebekk, who plays an important role throughout the work of the band, providing necessary continuity and a high level of musical tutition. Tasta skolekorps has won the 1st Division for school brass bands in Norway 12 times. The band participated in the European Youth Brass Band Championships in 1989 and 1998.

WARDLE ACADEMY YOUTH BAND (LEE RIGG) - ENGLAND Wardle Academy Youth Band has been in existence for around 35 years. During this time, the band has grown in both strength and number. Under current Musical Director Lee Rigg, the band has gained many prestigious titles, most recently Action Medical Youth Brass Band Entertainment Champion of Great Britain, National Youth Intermediate Champion of Great Britain and Saddleworth Youth Whit Friday Champions.

Wardle Academy Youth Band will perform: Fanfare and Flourishes (James Curnow), The Lark in the Clear Air (arr. Gordon Langford - tenor horn soloist: Emma Conway), Jubilation (James Curnow).

The band has also had many successes performing at Music for Youth and has been invited to perform at the Royal Albert Hall on nine occasions. In recent years, the band has also taken part in the Lord Mayor’s show, performed at Sage Gateshead as part of the Brass in Concert festival and gone on tour to various countries, including Spain, Germany and USA. The members are very much looking forward to performing in Utrecht at the European Youth Brass Band Contest.

Brass Band Berner Oberland Junior (BBOJ) is a youth brass band from the canton Berne in Switzerland. It is the junior band of the Championship Section Brass Band Berner Oberland. The BBOJ was founded in 1992 and it has since achieved some great results in the 2nd Section of the Swiss Brass Band Championships and other competitions. The band also performs at business celebrations, gala concerts and music festivals. Since 2012, it has been directed by conductor, euphonium player and music educator Jan Müller. The BBOJ is a dynamic, active and young band, which plays together with a lot of passion and joy. This will be its third performance at the European Youth Brass Band Contest.

CATCH BASSIN BRASS BAND (ANDREAS LACKNER) - AUSTRIA

Catch Bassin Brass Band will perform: Slavische Fantasie (Höhne arr. Peter Graham cornet soloist: Julian Ritsch), Gaelforce (Peter Graham).

Catch Bassin Brass Band was formed in 2010 following a visit to Venezuela by Thomas Steinbrucker, Gerd Bachmann and Andreas Lackner together with an international group of music educators. They were fascinated by the energy and the musical skills and enthusiasm of the young people playing in a large orchestra there and decided to offer a similar opportunity to all young people studying a brass instrument at the Innsbruck City Music School.

More than 90 children and young people from the Innsbruck City Music School, The Tyrolean State Conservatory and other local music schools form part of this project which is generously supported by the Innsbruck City Music School and its Director Wolfram Rosenberger. In 2014, as an umbrella for the overall project, the R.E.T. Brass Band was founded with top brass players from Tirol. The project is a logical continuation and serves as an umbrella of the brass band youth project at the Innsbruck City Music School.

In the past years, Catch Basin Brass Band has had the chance to perform at many concerts and has been able to attract much attention and recognition in the local community.

DANISH YOUTH BRASS BAND (STIG MÆRSK) - DENMARK The National Youth Brass Band of Denmark (NYBBD) has 34 members between the age of 15 and 22.

The band consists of players from bands from all four sections plus players from the marching band community. It has four ‘gatherings’ each year in different parts of Denmark to ensure as much exposure as possible and to connect with local bands and potential future players of the NYBBD. The band participated in the European Youth Brass Band Competition two years ago and was awarded sixth place out of eight. Many of the players have been looking forward to this weekend ever since walking off stage in 2016.

Danish Youth Brass Band will perform: Pastime With Good Company (Henrik VIII, Arr. Mogens Andresen), Meditation from Thaïs (Jules Massenet arr. Judith Hayes - tenor horn soloist: Astrid Lindthardt Toft), Sing, Sing, Sing (Louis Prima arr. Dave Wolpe / Henrik Lützen).

SEINDORF BEAUMARIS YOUTH BRASS BAND (GWYN M. EVANS) - WALES

Seindorf Beaumaris Youth Brass Band will perform: Intrada from Rhapsodic Symphony (Frank Hughes arr. Gwyn M. Evans), Carnival of Venice (Alan Catherall arr. Gwyn M. Evans - trombone soloist: Merin Lleu), Hiraeth Cofia’n Gwlad (Gwyn M. Evans).

Based in the town of Beaumaris on the island of Anglesey, Seindorf Beaumaris was formed in 1921 to entertain the many tourists visiting the town’s famous castle and pier. By the early 1980s membership numbers had dwindled and the committee decided to arouse the interest of local primary school children in order to secure the future of the band. This focus on youth still exists with the band’s junior section having over 120 members in its three bands: Junior, Intermediate and Youth. The Bandroom is a hive of activity with rehearsals and lessons taking place on every night of the week.

Beaumaris Youth Band has cemented its place as one of Wales’ foremost youth bands, winning the National Youth Entertainment Championships of Great Britain twice as well as being regular attendees at the Music For Youth National Festival at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall.

In 2017 the Youth Band won the North Wales Brass Band Association Youth title for the tenth successive year as well as winning the 4th Section title at the National Eisteddfod of Wales.

YOUTH BRASS 2000 (CHRIS JEANS) - ENGLAND Formed in 1989, Youth Brass 2000 is an independent youth brass band based in the East Midlands of England.

The band is fully inclusive with no entry auditions required, just commitment to its weekly rehearsal. It keeps very busy, with many concerts and competitions and it currently holds two of the most prestigious titles available to a youth band. The band recently won the British Open Youth Championships for the seventh year in succession and has won the last four National Youth Championships of Great Britain. 2018 sees it represent England for the fourth time in the European Youth Contest and it has also been invited to spend four days as the guest of the European City of Culture in Leeuwarden at the end of June.

Youth Brass 2000 will perform: The Long Way Home (Paul Mcghee), The Tongs and the Bones (Derek Bourgeois - percussion soloist: Sophie Stevenson), Ye Morning Stars of Light (Andi Cook).

Test-pieces Development Section Valerius Variations (Philip Sparke) Variations on a Melody by Adriaen Valerius (1575-1625) Dutch composer, artist and poet Adriaen Valerius is remembered today for his collection of 79 songs for voice and lute or cittern, Nederlandtsche Gedenck-clanck (literally Netherlands ‘sound-memories’), published in the year after his death. Born in Middelburg, Valerius spent most of his life in there as a notary and, later, mayor. The posthumous publication is a collection of his poems, set to already-existing melodies, and is significant in that it is one of the earliest published sources of the Wilhelmus - the Dutch National Anthem. The book gained national popularity during the long war with Spain, a popularity that was revived for similar reasons during German occupation of World War II. Philip Sparke has chosen for his theme the melody Merck toch, hoe sterck, the words of which tell about the War of Independence with Spain. The melody originally derives from an English tune with the title What if an houre or a moneth and is believed to be an even older sailor’s song. Valerius refers to the melody as Comediantendans (Dance of the Comedians). An extended presentation of the melody, including contrapuntal elaborations, is followed by three substantial variation movements. The first is a bright and lively march, with a ‘pomp and circumstance’ central tune, the second is a meditation in hymn tune style and the third a fugal finale.

Premier Section Chaucer’s Tunes (Michael Ball)) The brass band version of Chaucer’s Tunes was commissioned for the 1999 National Youth Brass Championships of Great Britain. The suite is cast in six linked sections.

1. Intrada is a lively dance derived from a song composed for a BBC production of Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales, which begins ‘Of fantasy is all our fare, But make we merry and slay care’.

2. Fantasia: Alma Redemptoris Mater The Fantasy or Fancy was a popular instrumental form in 15th and 16th century England.

Michael Ball follows Chaucer’s Prioress’s Tale about a small boy who fell in love with the Marian antiphon to the Virgin Mary, Alma Redemptoris Mater (Loving Mother of our Saviour).

3. Intermezzo: The Wife of Bath Chaucer’s tale is based on the predicament of a knight in King Arthur’s court, whose life will be spared (after he has abused a fair young maiden) if he can discover for Queen Guinevere what it is that women most desire. The knight answers that this is sovereignty over their husbands. The women of the court agree and the knight is compelled to marry the old Wife of Bath, who when he promises to be faithful is transformed into a lovely young lady.

4. Carol: Es ist ein’ Ros’ entsprungen This Christmas carol was first published in Germany in 1599. The rose of the title is the Virgin Mary. The well-known harmonisation with which Michael Ball begins his setting is the work of Michael Praetorius (1609).

5 and 6. Chase: Chauntecleer and the Fox and Finale The fable of Chauntecleer (the proud rooster) and the Fox (the predator whose own pride is his undoing) was recounted by Chaucer’s in the Nun’s Priest’s Tale. With a skilful sleight of hand, the Finale returns to the music of the Intrada, before winding up into a headlong dash to the end.

Boat parades April 28 | 12.30 – 18.00 pm | city centre of Utrecht Boats with various forms of wind music will cruise the waters of the Oudegracht in Utrecht’s historic city centre. The boats will depart from the terrace of TivoliVredenburg and sail to Ledig Erf via Bemuurde Weerd and Oudegracht. From there, they will sail back to TivoliVredenburg. The following bands & ensembles from Utrecht and surrounding areas will perform.

Lekblaazers (Vianen) This town band is part of Wind Orchestra Excelsior Vianen.

The orchestra was founded in 1899 so next year they will celebrate their 120th anniversary. The orchestra is led by conductor René de Jong.

Town Band Wilhelmina Herwijnen (Lingewaal) This town band is part of the Muziekvereniging Wilhelmina music society that was founded in 1898. This society consists of a fanfare orchestra and a student orchestra and is led by conductor Ron van Duffelen.

Town Band Jacquetti en de Toeters (Utrecht) Even though Jacquetti en de Toeters is only a small Town Band, they know how to throw one hell of a party.

Ensemble Eendracht Maakt Macht Leersum (Utrechtse Heuvelrug) Music society Eendracht Maakt Macht was founded in Leersum in 1920. It consists of five sections, with 80 musicians in total, both members and students. The orchestra plays in the 4th division (KNMO), and in the 2nd division (KNMO) in marching contests. It is led by conductor Rob Dronkers. Selected members of this large orchestra will perform on the boat.

Town Band de BluZZers (Utrecht) The broad repertoire of the BluZZers ranges from carnival music to Dixieland, jazz and chansons.

Egerländer Town Band De Leemkuulers (Bemmel) Conductor: Henry Meijer Founded in 1993, the town band the Leemkuulers plays folk music from the Egerland, a region north-west of Bohemia.

The music the Leemkuulers plays consists mostly of polka’s and marching music. Often, the musicians are accompanied by a duo of singers.

De Bazuin (Utrecht) Conductor: Joost Visser The Utrecht-based Christian music society Muziekvereniging De Bazuin was founded in 1920. Currently, the society has over 90 members, 50 of whom play in the wind orchestra.

Weathertown Bigband (De Bilt) Conductor: Marc van den Bosch The Weathertown Bigband is the youngest orchestra that is part of the Koninklijke Bilste Harmonie music society. The band celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. WBB consists of enthusiastic professional musicians as well as amateur musicians. Their repertoire ranges from Frank Sinatra to Quincy Jones, from jazz to latin and funk.

Big Band Utrecht (Utrecht) Conductor: Martien de Kam Big Band Utrecht is an ambitious orchestra made up of advanced amateurs and music students. The band loves to play a broad range of styles. Their repertoire includes traditional swing such as Count Basie, Stan Kenton and Duke Ellington as well as salsa, Latin and more modern music from composers such as Thad Jones, Bill Holman, Bob Mintzer, and Maria Schneider.
