HUNI KUIN
KEEPERS OF THE AMAZON’S ANCIENT WISDOM
PHOTOGRAPHY GARY VAN WYK
In the vast, biodiverse heart of the Amazon rainforest, where the canopy towers above the earth and rivers snake through the dense undergrowth, the Huni Kuin people have thrived for centuries, living in harmony with one of the most ecologically rich environments on Earth. Scattered across 127,383 acres of lush jungle, their community is intricately woven into the fabric of this tropical paradise, where tall trees, meandering rivers, and dewy foliage define their daily existence. Guardians of the forest, they embody an ancient way of life that is increasingly relevant in our modern world. As environmental consciousness gains traction globally, the Huni Kuin’s profound connection to nature and their holistic philosophy offer valuable lessons on sustainability, wellbeing, and interconnectedness.
The True People
The Huni Kuin, also known as the Kaxinawá, are an Indigenous group native to the Brazilian and Peruvian Amazon. ‘Huni Kuin’ translates to ‘True People’, reflecting their belief in living in harmony with nature, themselves, and their spiritual world. With an estimated population of around 12,000, the Huni Kuin’s territory spans riverside villages deep within the rainforest, where they lead lives largely untouched by the industrialised world.
Yet, far from being an isolated relic of the past, Huni Kuin culture is dynamic, evolving, and deeply spiritual. They preserve their ancient wisdom through oral history, song, and sacred practices that highlight the interdependence of all living beings. Their holistic philosophy and reverence for the natural world offer valuable lessons for modern society, showing how the balance between humanity and nature can sustain not only ecosystems but entire communities.
A Holistic Relationship With Nature
The Huni Kuin maintain a profound and holistic connection with the forest, which serves as their source of sustenance, medicine, and spiritual guidance. Every tree and plant plays a vital role in their daily lives and rituals, as they view the rainforest not just as a resource but as an integral part of their existence.
True wealth, for the Huni Kuin, is not measured by material possessions but by the abundance of fish, game, and a healthy, thriving forest that supports future generations. Their understanding of wellbeing encompasses both physical and spiritual health, with sustainability woven into every aspect of their life.
Central to their healing practices is a rich knowledge of medicinal plants, passed down through generations. The Huni Kuin’s deep understanding of the interconnectedness of body, mind, and spirit is reflected in their use of traditional remedies and sacred rituals. Perhaps most well known is their use of ayahuasca, a potent plant-based brew that induces visionary states. This ritual offers opportunities for deep healing, spiritual exploration, and enhanced communication with the natural world, further cementing their bond with the rainforest that sustains them.
Cultural Heritage in a Modern World
The Huni Kuin face severe threats from the modern world, particularly regarding climate change, deforestation, encroachment on their lands, and cultural dilution. The tribe’s survival is deeply intertwined with the health of the forest, which provides food, medicine, and spiritual connection. As the forest weakens, so does the Huni Kuin’s ability to sustain themselves, making its protection critical not only for their culture but for their very existence. Despite the challenges they face, the Huni Kuin remain resilient and determined to preserve their way of life. Through partnerships with global organisations, they actively fight for land rights and resist illegal logging and land grabs that threaten their environment.
Interestingly, the Huni Kuin have also begun to open their doors to the outside world, inviting visitors to learn about their customs, rituals, and environmental wisdom, creating a bridge between ancient culture and modernity. They have travelled around the world, sharing the ancient wisdom of their tribe and spreading a powerful message of sustainability and respect for the Earth.
THE HUNI KUIN ARE CUSTODIANS OF AN ANCIENT COSMOLOGY THAT INTERTWINES THEIR EXISTENCE WITH THE CYCLES OF NATURE AND OFFERS PROFOUND LESSONS IN SUSTAINABILITY AND THE TIMELESS VALUE OF LIVING IN HARMONY WITH THE EARTH.
It was during a visit to Cape Town that South African photographer Gary van Wyk crossed paths with members of the Huni Kuin tribe. Inspired by their profound connection to nature and their spiritual practices, Gary began documenting their journey in South Africa.
This encounter led to an extraordinary invitation for him to travel to the Amazon and immerse himself in the Huni Kuin’s way of life. It took a fourday boat journey and a trek deep into the Amazon for Gary to reach their village, where he captured stunning images of the Huni Kuin’s spiritual, cultural, and environmental practices, creating a powerful visual narrative of their connection to the rainforest.
Ancient tribes share a deep earth connection
Gary was also fortunate enough to travel with the Huni Kuin tribe members to meet the Maasai and bear photographic witness to these two ancient traditions coming together in a powerful moment of unity, as both tribes shared their deep connection to the land, their struggles for preservation and protection of Indigenous knowledge, and their hopes for a more sustainable future.
A portion of the proceeds from the sale of these photographic prints is reinvested into helping the tribe promote their customs, rituals, and environmental wisdom on a global scale. Through this unique collaboration, the Huni Kuin are able to share their message of sustainability and interconnectedness far beyond the boundaries of their Amazon home.
SUSTAINABILITY, WISDOM, AND THE TIMELESS VALUE OF LIVING IN HARMONY WITH THE EARTH.
Sustainable Future Lessons
In contrast to our fast-paced lives in urban environments, the Huni Kuin’s belief in the cyclical nature of life and the importance of maintaining harmony with nature resonates deeply in an era where environmental crises dominate headlines. They offer a profound perspective on how to live in balance with the planet, and they work to implement sustainable land and waste management systems that protect the forest while sustaining their community. Their initiatives include the sustainable harvesting of natural resources, beekeeping, and the conservation of endangered species like turtles. The entire tribe participates in these environmental efforts, employing eco-friendly practices such as composting toilets, solar panels, and rainwater capture techniques. For the Huni Kuin, it’s not just about coexisting with nature but thriving within it, ensuring that their ancestral lands continue to be a source of life and wisdom for generations to come.
Ancient Wisdom in a Modern World
In a world facing mounting environmental challenges, the Huni Kuin’s sustainable practices, rooted in agroforestry and natural medicine, provide a model for modern solutions to today’s ecological challenges. Their worldview goes even deeper, seeing the Earth as a living entity, reminding us that the protection of the rainforest is integral to the survival of the Huni Kuin, and that the health of the planet is intrinsically tied to our own wellbeing. Their spiritual insight and environmental stewardship stand as a beacon of ancient wisdom in a rapidly modernising era, inviting us to reflect on our lifestyles and the impact of our choices on the planet. Through their reverence for the forest and the wisdom passed down through generations, the Huni Kuin challenge us to rethink our relationship with the environment, reminding us of the forest’s power to bring peace, balance, and healing.

FORWARD-THINKING DESIGN TRENDS EVOKE A DESIRE FOR SUBTLETY AND A SENSE OF ESCAPISM
The new warmer seasons reflect a forwardthinking future when it comes to design trends, one that harmonises indoor and outdoor living. Spring and summer are infused with renewal and wellbeing, and offer a canvas for free-spirited creativity and spontaneous experimentation. Whether you’re looking to create an ‘outside room’ or evolving your indoor decor, design trends merge the tangible with the imaginative, creating a seamless blend of comfort, elegance, and escapism.
A FRESH COLOUR PALETTE
This season’s colour palette takes us on a journey of renewal and optimism. For both indoor and outdoor spaces, colour plays a pivotal role in evoking a sense of calm and wellbeing while inviting bold moments of creative expression. Soft greys evoke overcast summer skies, delicate pinks are reminiscent of spring blossoms, and warm reds ignite feelings of energy and passion. These hues are balanced by nature-inspired blues and greens, echoing the ocean, forests, and skies, and provide a soothing backdrop to both outdoor lounges and dining areas.
Vibrant oranges and electrified pastels are perfect for accent pieces, outdoor cushions, or planters, adding an element of joy and whimsy. Ethereal shades like misty lavender and pale mint, add a dreamy quality to interiors and exteriors alike. The season’s colour journey is anchored by the transformative allure of gold, seen in subtle details like hardware, light fixtures, or even outdoor fire pits, adding a touch of sophistication and warmth.
Spring and summer are all about alfresco dining, which becomes an elevated experience. Dining spaces are being thoughtfully designed with long communal tables made of reclaimed wood or natural stone, perfect for large gatherings under the stars. Oversized umbrellas or retractable awnings provide shade during the day and enhance the intimate dining atmosphere as the sun sets. Outdoor kitchens are being transformed into fully functional cooking spaces with built-in grills, pizza ovens, and even wine coolers, allowing outdoor entertainment to become a sophisticated culinary experience. Lighting also plays a crucial role in alfresco dining, and solar-powered lanterns, string lights, and dramatic hanging fixtures create an inviting ambience. These lighting choices extend into other outdoor areas, with soft, warm lighting turning patios and terraces into cosy, night-time retreats.
ALFRESCO DINING
SUSTAINABILITY AND NATURE
In line with growing global design movements, sustainability extends seamlessly across both indoor and outdoor design. Reclaimed wood, recycled plastics, and eco-friendly textiles such as jute and hemp dominate furniture trends.
These materials not only reduce the overall environmental footprint but also offer natural textures that complement outdoor settings. For example, woven rattan and bamboo furniture with soft cushions in earthy tones or tropical patterns bring a chic yet grounded aesthetic to outdoor areas.
Natural stone, clay, and even cork make their appearances in both decorative and functional items. These materials promote a sense of grounding, an important design element in spaces that are meant to rejuvenate and restore.
FREE-SPIRITED CREATIVITY
There is a distinct sense of spontaneity and bold experimentation in design, this season. Outdoor spaces are being transformed into creative extensions of the home, and unexpected materials and bold textures are blended to craft a unique aesthetic. Think terrazzo tables paired with upholstered benches or modern, sculptural outdoor lighting juxtaposed with woven rugs. This experimental spirit extends indoors as well, where maximalism meets mindfulness. Layering rich patterns, textures, and eras is key, and vintage-inspired pieces sit alongside contemporary designs, while natural elements like wood and stone are blended with metallic accents, particularly gold. This trend allows for more playful and personalised decor choices, giving each space a unique identity.
INDOOR-OUTDOOR COMFORT
One of the hallmark trends for the hotter seasons is the fusion of indoor and outdoor spaces. Homes are increasingly designed to make the outdoors as comfortable as interior spaces. Plush, deep-seated sofas and armchairs are crafted from weather-resistant materials like teak, aluminium, and sustainable rattan, creating luxurious outdoor living areas that are perfect for lounging or entertaining. Sliding glass doors, bi-fold windows, and other architectural elements blur the line between home and garden, making it effortless to move from the interior living room to an outdoor lounge. This indoor-outdoor connection allows homes to breathe, bringing fresh air and natural light into spaces, while expanding the area for entertaining or relaxation.
POOLS AND OUTDOOR OASES
As an important focal point of outdoor living design, pools are evolving from simple recreational spaces into luxurious retreats designed to foster relaxation. This season, the trend leans toward more organic shapes that echo natural landscapes, surrounded by greenery and complemented by cascading water features or fire pits. Infinity edges, natural stone decking, and eco-friendly filtration systems bring the concept of sustainability to luxury settings.
Wellbeing is also a central focus for both indoor and outdoor spaces this season. Outdoor areas are increasingly being designed as sanctuaries, offering respite from the hectic pace of modern life, and often incorporate natural pools or plunge pools surrounded by natural stone, as well as water features to encourage moments of calm and relaxation. Meditation gardens, zen-inspired landscapes, and biophilic design elements like vertical gardens or green walls bring the tranquillity of nature closer to home. This wellness trend includes thoughtful lighting design, from dimmable outdoor sconces that set a peaceful tone in the evenings to ambient lanterns that allow for peaceful late-night gatherings.
ESCAPISM THROUGH DESIGN
The defining theme of Spring/Summer 2024 is escapism, and crafting indoor and outdoor spaces that transport us beyond the everyday. Ethereal colour palettes, organic shapes, and luxurious textures shape environments that feel like personal retreats.
This season’s trends blur the boundaries between interior and exterior living, creating seamless indoor-outdoor transitions and infusing homes with a sense of freedom and creativity. The outside room becomes an extension of a home’s soul, merging comfort with natural beauty and tranquillity. Embracing these trends enables the creation of spaces that are not only beautiful and functional but also embody a lifestyle centred on wellbeing, sustainability, and personal expression.
FASHION FORWARD
A SEASON OF NOSTALGIA, TRANSFORMATION, VIBRANT
EXPRESSION AND UNDERSTATED ELEGANCE
The new fashion season ushers in a captivating mix of nostalgia and transformation, and a creative blend of bold statements with quiet luxuries.
As we embrace this new era, designers are channelling freedom, joy, and self-expression into colour palettes and design styles that capture the spirit of the times. The Spring/Summer 2024 catwalks have redefined self-expression, fusing joyful hues with minimalist silhouettes, offering fashion that feels both vibrant and reflective. But beyond aesthetics, this season also focuses heavily on sustainability and the mindful choices reshaping the future of fashion. With a subtle nod to the past and a vision towards a more conscious future, the many facets of personal style and responsibility are explored.
A COLOUR PALETTE OF CHANGE
The Spring/Summer 2024 carefully curated colour palette balances the innovative with the familiar. Reflecting a newfound sense of positivity and transformation, the warmer seasons’ hues provide the perfect canvas for self-expression, whether you’re looking to make a bold statement or find comfort in soothing tones. Designers have woven together colours that reflect the spirit of transformation, with vibrant hues like Rooibos Red, Capri Blue and Lemon Yellow standing alongside softer, more restrained core classic tones like Brilliant White, Mushroom, and Quiet Shade, which create a foundation for the season’s looks, providing a neutral backdrop that pairs well with more playful elements or can stand alone in their sophistication. These muted shades allow the more daring colours to shine while still providing wardrobe stability.
DESIGN FUSION OF BOLDNESS AND SIMPLICITY
Spring/Summer 2024 brings a mix of bold designs and timeless silhouettes, encouraging fashion enthusiasts to explore creativity while investing in quality. While many runways showcase vivid prints and statement-making patterns, there’s an equally strong push for minimalist sophistication, grounded in ’90s-inspired elegance.
BOLD COLOURS AND PRINTS
Striking patterns and vibrant hues are making a major comeback this season, with abstract florals, animal prints, and geometric designs dominating the collections. Whether it’s a bright floral sundress or a geometric jumpsuit, designers are embracing life through colour and pattern, giving wearers the freedom to mix and match bold, eye-catching pieces. It’s a celebration of individuality, where prints and hues are meant to stand out, telling a story of exuberance and joy.
FASHION FADES, STYLE IS ETERNAL
YVES SAINT LAURENT
QUIET LUXURY AND UNDERSTATED MINIMALISM
However, counterbalancing this boldness is the emergence of ‘quiet luxury’ – a minimalist aesthetic rooted in understated elegance. Inspired by the refined, pared-down styles of the ’90s, this season sees a resurgence of timeless staples – tailored trouser suits, sleek pencil skirts, and well-crafted denim that offer a sense of lasting sophistication. The focus is on elevated basics, where quality fabrics and precise cuts speak louder than logos or flashy embellishments.
This minimalist revival is also seen in the muted colour palette that runs through many collections. While bold colours make statements, the calming tones of beige, white, black, and soft greys create a canvas for versatile dressing. These shades emphasise the beauty of simplicity, allowing wearers to focus on form, texture, and the subtle elegance of a well-made piece.
CLASSIC STYLES BUILT TO LAST
A key theme for Spring/Summer 2024 is durability – not just in terms of fabric, but in the longevity of design. This season champions investment pieces, celebrating garments that are built to last, both in quality and style. The neutral core classic shades of white, mushroom, grey and taupe are wardrobe staples designed to transcend trends and remain relevant season after season.
Designers are also focusing on timeless silhouettes that echo this ethos of longevity. High-waisted trousers, crisp white dresses, and trench coats serve as anchors for the season’s collections. These pieces are not only versatile but speak to a growing desire for fashion that does more than just follow the latest trend – it’s about creating a wardrobe that is both elegant and enduring. The trend toward relaxed tailoring, a major trend this season, further blurs the lines between casual and formal. Oversized blazers, loose-fitting suits, and wide-legged trousers offer a stylish yet comfortable alternative to rigid formalwear, ensuring these pieces can transition effortlessly from day to night.
SUSTAINABILITY AND MINDFUL FASHION
Spring/Summer 2024 also marks a turning point in how fashion approaches sustainability. This season, the emphasis is not only on eco-friendly fabrics but on creating pieces that are designed for longevity. Fast fashion takes a backseat as designers turn to recycled materials, organic cotton, and biodegradable fabrics. Consumers are increasingly looking for clothing that is not only stylish but responsible, and this season’s collections deliver just that.
Sustainability is seen not just in fabric choices but in the very design process, and garments are being crafted with the idea of ‘slow fashion’ in mind. This sustainability shift is more than just a trend –it’s a fundamental change in how fashion is created and consumed.
Right Timeless pieces can be worn season after season to reduce waste and promote mindful consumption.
Left The juxtaposition between bold and neutral echoes a season that is about embracing both comfort and expression.
Above Natural grounded tones offer versatility and ease, making them popular in both men’s and women’s fashion.
Below Patterns tell a story of exuberance and joy.
THE FASHION LANDSCAPE ENCOURAGES US TO EMBRACE VERSATILITY AND SOPHISTICATION –WHETHER THROUGH BOLD PRINTS, RELAXED TAILORING, OR MINIMALIST STAPLES – WHILE THE FOCUS ON SUSTAINABILITY UNDERSCORES A SHIFT TOWARDS THOUGHTFUL, RESPONSIBLE FASHION

A LEGACY OF
THE STORY OF LACE IS WOVEN IN BOTH TRADITION AND TREND, AND THIS SEASON IT REAFFIRMS ITS STATUS AS A TIMELESS FASHION STAPLE.
Lace, with its intricate patterns and delicate textures, transcends mere fabric; it embodies a legacy of artistry and craftsmanship that has enchanted us for centuries. The origins of lace can be traced back to the late 15th century, evolving into a symbol of wealth and sophistication in Europe. Handcrafted by skilled artisans, lace was once reserved for the elite, adorning the garments of royals and nobility. Today, while this once exclusive fabric is more widely accessible, it retains an air of elegance and grace, making it a cherished choice in modern wardrobes.
Many contemporary brides incorporate lace from their mother’s or grandmother’s wedding gown into their own attire, signifying legacy and love. This generational connection not only warms the heart but also intertwines cherished memories with modern style.
At its essence, lace embodies a sense of romanticism. Its delicate threads whisper tales of love and longing, conjuring images of sunlit gardens and candlelit dinners. The sheer quality of lace adds an alluring touch that enhances any outfit. This duality makes lace a favoured choice for romantic occasions – from weddings to intimate evenings out – where it accentuates femininity and charm.
The romantic allure of lace is not solely in its appearance but also in the emotions it evokes. Wearing lace can transport you to a different era, where elegance and grace defined beauty. Each piece carries a story, often reflecting the personality of its wearer and allowing for personal expression of style and sentiment.
The creation of lace is a meticulous art form, often requiring countless hours of painstaking work. Artisans employ various techniques – such as needle lace, bobbin lace, and crochet lace – to produce unique, handcrafted pieces. Each stitch narrates a story, embodying the maker’s skill and passion. The rhythmic motions involved in crafting lace evoke a sense of tranquillity, connecting artisans to a tradition that has spanned centuries.
This artisanal quality not only enhances lace’s beauty but also its intrinsic value. The skill and dedication required elevate lace into a revered art form, reminiscent of a time when craftsmanship was paramount. Each handmade piece carries the spirit of its creator, transforming it into more than just fabric; it becomes a treasured artefact.
Wearing lace can transform your feelings, instilling a sense of elegance, confidence, and playfulness. It has the power to elevate any outfit, whether it’s a delicate lace blouse paired with tailored trousers or a flowing lace dress that sways gracefully in the breeze. Lace can encapsulate youthful innocence or embody the spirit of freedom, seamlessly adapting to the wearer’s mood and style.
The fashion industry is increasingly pivoting towards sustainability and slow fashion, and lace shines as a beacon of responsible craftsmanship. The handmade nature of lace, often produced in small batches, aligns perfectly with ethical fashion principles. By valuing artisanal skills and prioritising quality over quantity, lace encourages consumers to cherish each piece rather than falling prey to fast fashion’s fleeting trends. In an age where mass production often dilutes the value of artistry, lace serves as a reminder of the beauty found in patience and dedication. Supporting lace artisans not only helps preserve traditional skills but also fosters a deeper appreciation for the stories interwoven into each piece.
As we embrace Spring/Summer 2024, lace not only graces the fashion runways but also embodies a rich narrative of timelessness and adaptability. Designers are reimagining this classic fabric, merging nostalgia with modern aesthetics to create flowing dresses that radiate romantic charm, alongside structured blouses that exude sophistication. This versatility allows lace to appeal to a diverse audience, resonating with those who cherish vintage allure and those drawn to contemporary styles infused with bohemian freedom. Whether we find joy in a vintage lace piece or embrace its modern interpretations, lace invites us to celebrate the art of fashion with love and intention, reminding us that its elegance and craftsmanship transcend generations.

WARMER SEASONS MAKEUP TRENDS ARE BOLD AND FRESH
As the seasons change and nature begins to bloom, the makeup world follows suit with fresh trends that capture the vibrancy and energy of spring and summer.
BOLD COLOUR STATEMENTS
One of the most eye-catching trends this season is the resurgence of bold, saturated colours. Expect to see a wide spectrum of vivid hues, from electric blues and fiery oranges to bright pinks and sunny yellows. These striking shades won’t be confined to just eyeshadows – bold lips and flushed cheeks will also feature these vibrant colours. Pair vibrant eyes with a fresh, dewy complexion and understated brows for balance, or let bold lip colour steal the show with a minimalist eye. The key is to mix boldness with softness for a look that feels modern yet wearable.
RADIANT AND FRESH-FACED SKIN
Achieving fresh-faced beauty is a major focus of this season’s makeup trends. The radiant skin look has evolved into something more refined, emphasising a lit-from-within glow. This dewy, healthy complexion allows natural beauty to shine, making it perfect for those who want a simple yet striking effect. Lightweight foundations or tinted moisturisers provide a sheer, hydrated finish without masking the skin’s natural texture. Luminous primers and soft highlighters also enhance skin glow.
MINIMALIST MAKEUP
In contrast to the bold colour trends, minimalist makeup remains a key look this season. The focus is on enhancing natural features rather than covering them up, and minimalist beauty is about soft radiance and an effortless, freshfaced glow that requires little product for maximum impact. Sheer foundations, BB creams, and tinted moisturisers allow skin’s natural texture to shine through. A touch of tinted lip balm, soft highlighter, and a swipe of mascara will complete the look. Skincare is key here – prioritising skin health means being able to embrace this fresh, bare-faced trend with confidence.
GRAPHIC EYELINER
The artistic flair of graphic eyeliner is making a strong return, adding a bold twist to eye makeup. Glowing, natural skin and minimalistic makeup will make eyeliner the star of the show.
SUSTAINABLE BEAUTY
Sustainability continues to be a major focus in the beauty industry, with this season’s makeup trends emphasising eco-friendly packaging and clean beauty formulations. Products that promote skin health while reducing environmental impact are more popular than ever, combining beauty with responsibility. Choose multi-use products, such as lip-and-cheek tints or skincareinfused foundations, to cut down on waste while enhancing a fresh-faced look. Seek out brands committed to sustainability through recyclable packaging, cruelty-free practices, and ethical sourcing of ingredients.

HIDDEN GEMS
During World War II, Roald Dahl served as an RAF fighter pilot, enduring harrowing experiences such as surviving a crash landing in the Libyan desert. While recuperating from injuries sustained in the crash, Dahl’s innate talent for storytelling emerged, and his experiences inspired stories like The Gremlins and Danny, the Champion of the World. Roald Dahl’s boundless creativity shines through in his creation of over 500 new words and character names. From the Oompa-Loompas and ‘scrumdiddlyumptious’ in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to ‘snozzcumbers’ and ‘frobscottle’ in The BFG, Dahl’s linguistic playfulness knows no bounds. He affectionately dubbed his language ‘Gobblefunk’ and revelled in inventing new words and meanings. Recognising his linguistic genius, Oxford University Press even compiled a special Roald Dahl Dictionary, showcasing nearly 8,000 real and imaginary words cherished by the author.
Hernan Diaz’s Trust is a masterful exploration of wealth, power, and the elusive nature of truth, set against the backdrop of New York City’s financial elite. This novel serves as a metafictional tapestry that intricately weaves together the lives of a secretive financier and his enigmatic wife, challenging readers to decipher the veracity of the narratives presented.
Trust is composed of four distinct fictional texts: ‘A Novel’ (Bonds), an incomplete autobiography titled ‘My Life’, a completed memoir called ‘A Memoir, Remembered’, and a diary named ‘Futures’. Each text offers varying perspectives on the same characters and events, creating a multifaceted view of the central figures. However, the information in each work is often mutually exclusive, prompting readers to grapple with the question of what is real and what is illusion. This structure not only reflects Diaz’s innovative storytelling but also mirrors the complexities and contradictions inherent in the world of finance and extreme wealth.
Diaz’s initial inspiration for Trust stemmed from a desire to write about extreme wealth and capital, and he achieves that ambition with profound insight.
TRUST
A REVIEW
“We are the stories we tell ourselves, even if we know they aren’t entirely true.”
― Hernan Diaz, Trust
The narrative probes deep into the moral and ethical implications of financial power, examining how wealth shapes identities, relationships, and societal structures. The characters are compelling and richly drawn, and embody the paradoxes of affluence – both the allure and the isolation that it can bring.
The book has garnered widespread acclaim and was a winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2023. Critics have praised Diaz’s ability to weave intricate narratives that challenge readers’ perceptions while highlighting the intricacies of truth and storytelling. The interplay between the different texts creates a dynamic reading experience, allowing for a deep exploration of trust in various forms – whether in relationships, narratives, or the financial systems that underpin society.
Trust is a thought-provoking and intricately constructed novel that not only captivates with its narrative depth but also invites readers to reflect on the nature of truth in a world shaped by wealth and power. Hernan Diaz has crafted a compelling literary puzzle that is as intellectually engaging as it is narratively satisfying, solidifying his place as a significant voice in contemporary literature.
Coffee Culture
FROM MORNING RITUALS TO TRENDY CAFÉS, COFFEE HAS EVOLVED INTO A GLOBAL JOURNEY OF TRADITIONS AND INNOVATION, BLENDING RICH CULTURAL PRACTICES WITH MODERN TRENDS.
Few beverages have had as profound an impact on the world as coffee. What began as a humble discovery in the Ethiopian highlands has grown into a global cultural and economic powerhouse, enjoyed in myriad ways by people from all walks of life. Coffee has evolved over the centuries – from a mystical brew that helped monks stay awake during prayer to a modern lifestyle staple, with trendy cafés and artisanal roasters capturing the imagination of coffee lovers worldwide. For those who appreciate the nuances of flavour, history, and ritual behind each cup, the world of coffee offers an endlessly fascinating journey.
A Tale of Discovery and Tradition
The origin of coffee is steeped in legend. It is said that in the ancient forests of Ethiopia, a goat herder named Kaldi made a curious discovery – his goats became unusually energetic after consuming the red cherries of a particular tree. Intrigued, Kaldi tried the cherries himself and experienced a surge of vitality. He shared his findings with monks at a local monastery, who began using the beans to stay alert during long hours of prayer. This simple discovery would change the world forever.
From Ethiopia, coffee began its global journey via Arab traders who brought the beans back to the Arabian Peninsula. By the 15th century, coffee cultivation was flourishing in Yemen, where the beverage became known as qahwa, a word derived from the Arabic for ‘wine’. The drink quickly gained popularity across the Islamic world, where it was not only consumed for its stimulating effects but also for its role in social gatherings and intellectual discourse. Coffeehouses, known as qahveh khaneh, emerged in cities across the Middle East, becoming hubs for conversation, debate, and camaraderie.
In the 17th century, European traders introduced coffee to the West. Although initially met with suspicion – some religious authorities even referred to it as the ‘bitter invention of Satan’ – coffee eventually won over the European palate. Pope Clement VIII is said to have tried it and given it his blessing, paving the way for the beverage to become a staple in European cities like Venice, London, and Paris. By the 18th century, coffeehouses had become cultural institutions, frequented by intellectuals, writers, and artists. These establishments were the birthplace of many revolutionary ideas that shaped the political and cultural landscapes of the time.
The Heart of the Experience
At the heart of every cup of coffee are the beans, and the type of bean you choose makes all the difference in flavour, aroma, and character. Of the 120 species of coffee plants that exist, two dominate global production: Arabica and Robusta. Arabica, known for its smooth and nuanced flavour profile, accounts for approximately 60-70% of the world’s coffee production. Typically grown at higher altitudes, Arabica beans are prized for their delicate sweetness, fruity undertones, and balanced acidity. However, Arabica plants are more vulnerable to pests and environmental changes, which makes them more expensive to cultivate.
Robusta, by contrast, is hardier and can be grown at lower altitudes, making it a more affordable option. These beans are often used in espresso blends and instant coffee due to their strong, bold flavour and higher caffeine content. Robusta beans are notably bitter, with a fuller body and a more intense, earthy flavour profile.
While Arabica and Robusta dominate the coffee trade, niche varieties such as Liberica and Excelsa, grown mainly in Southeast Asia, offer rare and unique flavours that appeal to connoisseurs.
Where the Magic Happens
Coffee grows best in tropical climates, and the regions where coffee cultivation thrives are collectively known as the ‘Coffee Belt’. Stretching between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, this belt encompasses countries that produce the vast majority of the world’s coffee. Three nations stand out for their contributions – Brazil, Vietnam, and Colombia.
Brazil, the world’s largest coffee producer, is known for its smooth, nutty coffees that often feature chocolatey undertones and low acidity. Brazilian coffee’s mild profile makes it a favourite for blending, providing a balanced base for many popular coffee blends. Vietnam, the secondlargest coffee producer, is renowned for its strong, bitter Robusta beans. In Vietnam, coffee is often served with sweetened condensed milk, a local tradition that highlights the bold flavours of the beans while adding a creamy sweetness. Colombia is famous for its high-quality Arabica beans, grown in the mountainous regions of the country. Colombian coffee is celebrated for its vibrant acidity, rich sweetness, and smooth, wellrounded flavour.
Other countries within the Coffee Belt, including Ethiopia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Honduras, produce coffees with distinctive flavour profiles, often influenced by the unique terroirs of their respective regions.
The Art of Processing and Roasting
The journey from coffee cherry to coffee bean is a meticulous process that significantly affects the final flavour of your cup. Coffee cherries are harvested and processed using one of two primary methods – washed or natural.
The washed method, known as the wet process, involves removing the cherry’s outer pulp before fermenting and rinsing the beans. This method tends to produce a cleaner, brighter cup, highlighting the bean’s acidity and nuanced flavours.
The natural method, or dry process, involves drying the whole cherry in the sun before the pulp is removed. This method imparts fruity, fullbodied characteristics to the coffee, as the beans absorb sugars from the fruit during the drying process.
Once the beans are processed, they are roasted to develop their flavour. Roasting is an art in itself, and the level of roast – light, medium, or dark – determines the final taste profile. Light roasts preserve more of the bean’s original characteristics, offering floral and fruity notes. Medium roasts balance acidity and body, while dark roasts develop bold, smoky, and sometimes chocolatey flavours, often with a rich, heavy body.
What’s Brewing?
The way coffee is brewed plays an essential role in its flavour and texture, and different cultures have developed unique brewing methods that reflect their local traditions and preferences.
In Italy, the birthplace of espresso, coffee is consumed quickly and intensely. Espresso is brewed by forcing hot water through finely ground coffee under high pressure, resulting in a concentrated shot with a bold, rich flavour. Espresso serves as the foundation for numerous beloved drinks, including cappuccinos, lattes, and macchiatos.
The French press offers a more leisurely brewing experience. Coarsely ground coffee is steeped in hot water before being pressed through a mesh filter, creating a robust and full-bodied cup that highlights the coffee’s natural oils.
The pour-over method, popularised in Japan, emphasises precision and control. Hot water is poured over coffee grounds in a filter, allowing the coffee to extract slowly and drip into a vessel below. This method produces a clean, delicate cup with a lighter body and subtle flavours.
Turkish coffee, one of the oldest brewing methods, involves boiling finely ground coffee in water and often sugar until it froths. The unfiltered coffee is poured into small cups, leaving the grounds in the bottom, creating a rich, thick brew with an intense flavour.
A Global Coffee Culture
Coffee culture has evolved into a global phenomenon, with each country adding its unique flair to the experience. In Italy, coffee is part of the daily rhythm – often enjoyed standing at a bar, a quick but cherished ritual. In the United States, coffee has taken on a more commercialised, on-the-go aspect, with large coffee chains influencing the rise of personalised coffee beverages.
In Sweden, the concept of fika – a coffee break accompanied by pastries – is a deeply ingrained cultural tradition, a moment to pause and connect with friends or colleagues. In Turkey and Greece, coffee is more than a drink; it’s a symbol of hospitality and social connection, often served unfiltered in small cups during intimate gatherings.
The rise of the third-wave coffee movement in the early 2000s elevated coffee appreciation to an artisanal level. Consumers became more interested in the origins of their beans, the ethical practices behind their production, and the flavour nuances that come from single-origin beans and specialised roasting techniques. This movement has given rise to speciality coffee shops and an emphasis on sustainability and transparency in the coffee supply chain.
The Coffee Connection
Beyond its role as an energising beverage, coffee is a social connector, bringing people together across cultures and continents. From morning rituals to bustling coffeehouses, coffee fosters a sense of community and belonging. It’s a shared experience that transcends borders, creating moments of connection, whether over a quiet cup at home or in a lively café.
As coffee culture continues to evolve, it is increasingly intertwined with values like transparency, ethical sourcing, and sustainability. Consumers are more conscious than ever about the environmental and social impacts of their coffee choices, favouring fair trade and eco-friendly practices.
The future of coffee culture is poised to deepen its connection to lifestyle and social values, with innovations in brewing and growing techniques, and a continued focus on quality, sustainability, and the shared experience that coffee offers.
In the end, coffee is more than just a drink. It’s a journey, a ritual, and a source of connection –one that continues to evolve while celebrating its rich heritage across the globe.
Coffee is a lot more than just a drink . It’s something happening .

Coastal DREAM LIFE
THE GOLD STANDARD OF GLOBAL REAL ESTATE
Coastal living has always held a distinct charm, combining breathtaking ocean views, tranquil surroundings, and a lifestyle many aspire to attain. From the rocky cliffs of the Mediterranean to the serene shores of Florida, and the tropical paradises of Southeast Asia, coastal properties remain some of the most sought-after real estate investments across the globe. The appeal is universal, driven by factors such as improved mental and physical wellbeing, a more relaxed pace of life, and the prestige that accompanies owning prime oceanfront real estate. These properties, however, are not just symbols of luxury but also of financial wisdom, consistently proving their value in terms of long-term investment potential.
As coastal living continues to attract highnet-worth individuals and savvy investors, the demand for these exclusive properties has led to skyrocketing prices in many parts of the world. Malibu in California, for instance, consistently ranks among the most expensive coastal markets, with home prices in certain areas exceeding $10 million. Similarly, in Australia, Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach draws buyers from across the globe, while France’s Côte d’Azur remains a playground for the rich and famous, attracting those seeking Mediterranean glamour.
In Dubai, luxury coastal developments like the Palm Jumeirah have redefined waterfront living, with man-made islands adding a futuristic twist to the traditional appeal of oceanfront properties. The exclusive nature of these developments, combined with limited availability of prime oceanfront land, drives consistent price appreciation.
However, the allure of coastal living extends far beyond owning prime real estate – it’s deeply connected to a growing shift toward conscious living. As people increasingly prioritise environments that offer both luxury and an enhanced quality of life, there’s a heightened awareness of the benefits of living in harmony with nature.
Coastal properties, with their soothing rhythms and direct connection to the natural world, align perfectly with this desire for a more mindful, balanced existence. The proximity to the sea offers not only a serene escape but also promotes mental health, physical wellbeing, and sustainability, reflecting a broader global trend toward living with greater purpose and environmental consciousness. Coastal living, with its easy access to outdoor activities and stressreducing ambience, embodies the essence of a more thoughtful, intentional lifestyle.
South Africa’s coastal property market has also experienced a surge, particularly on the KwaZuluNatal North Coast. This region is now one of the country’s fastest-growing property hotspots, driven largely by a trend known as ‘semigration’. Urban dwellers from major cities in Gauteng and other inland provinces are increasingly relocating to coastal areas in search of a more relaxed, secure, and family-friendly environment.
Coastal living is connected to conscious living
Developments like the Palm Jumeirah in Dubai have redefined waterfront living
The KwaZulu-Natal North Coast, with its yearround mild climate and unspoiled golden beaches, provides the perfect backdrop for those seeking to escape the fast-paced city life. As demand for properties in this area rises, so do prices, with oceanfront real estate becoming a prized commodity. Semigration is not only a local phenomenon; international buyers, too, are beginning to take notice of the region’s unique offerings.
One of the key drivers of the North Coast’s property boom is its appeal to families looking for a safe, serene environment. The region’s family-friendly ethos, coupled with its natural beauty and outdoor lifestyle, makes it an ideal location for those wanting to raise children in a secure, picturesque setting, or retirees looking for a more relaxed, yet still active lifestyle.
Zimbali Estate is one of the most exclusive residential developments on the KwaZuluNatal North Coast to offer this lifestyle to multigenerational families. The estate represents the epitome of luxury coastal living, offering direct beach access – an increasingly rare feature in many coastal areas.
Its unique location within a stunning coastal forest, provides spectacular sea views and a close connection to nature, making it a prime destination for discerning buyers who value luxury and sustainability.
What sets Zimbali Estate apart is its commitment to eco-conscious living. The estate’s conservation ethos prioritises the protection of its coastal forest and ecosystems, in line with the growing global demand for sustainability in high-end real estate.
Zimbali Estate represents the epitome of luxury coastal living in South Africa
This eco-focused approach is complemented by world-class amenities, including the best-rated golf course in the province, tennis courts, top-tier restaurants, 5-star hotel accommodation, and a network of walking trails that weave through its lush coastal forest landscape.
Zimbali Estate embodies the principles of conscious living, creating a lifestyle that allows residents to enjoy luxury while preserving the natural beauty that surrounds them. This growing awareness of sustainability has made locations like Zimbali Estate increasingly desirable to buyers who seek more than just comfort, but also want to exist in harmony with their environment.
Living at Zimbali Estate is about more than just owning a home; it offers a lifestyle where luxury, nature, and security converge. For families, the estate is a safe haven, where children can roam freely within a secure environment. For investors, it represents a valuable asset in a region that continues to see rising demand and limited supply of prime coastal properties.
AT THE BEACH, LIFE IS DIFFERENT. TIME DOESN’T MOVE HOUR TO HOUR BUT MOOD TO MOMENT. WE LIVE BY THE CURRENTS, PLAN BY THE TIDES, AND FOLLOW THE SUN.
SANDY GINGRAS
But Zimbali Estate is not alone in its appeal as a secure, gated coastal estate. Around the world, properties that combine ocean views with exclusivity and security are becoming increasingly desirable. In Florida, for instance, gated waterfront communities are highly sought after, offering a combination of privacy, safety, and luxury that is hard to match. The same is true in the Caribbean, where elite estates like Mustique Island and the Bahamas’ Albany Estate cater to high-net-worth individuals looking for not just a home, but an entire lifestyle.
This global trend reflects a broader shift toward secure living in coastal areas, where buyers prioritise privacy, protection, and the ability to retreat from the outside world while still enjoying easy access to the beach and natural beauty. In regions like the Mediterranean, the demand for these exclusive, gated estates is as strong as ever, with limited availability pushing up prices and making these properties increasingly valuable.
Despite fluctuations in the global real estate market, coastal properties have consistently proven their resilience. Whether it’s along the azure waters of the Mediterranean, the sunny shores of California, or South Africa’s KwaZuluNatal North Coast, coastal living continues to represent the pinnacle of luxury and desirability. The combination of natural beauty, limited supply, and the aspirational lifestyle associated with waterfront properties ensures the appreciation in value of these investments.
In recent years, the appeal of outdoor living and proximity to nature has only increased, particularly in the wake of the global pandemic. Buyers are, now more than ever, seeking homes that offer outdoor spaces, scenic beauty, and the opportunity for relaxation and recreation. Coastal properties, with their intrinsic connection to the sea, provide all of these benefits and more.
For investors, owning coastal real estate is not just about the here and now; it’s about securing a valuable asset that will likely grow in worth over time. Coastal homes offer a sense of freedom, space, and calm that is hard to find in urban settings, making them an attractive option for those seeking a change in lifestyle.
Whether drawn by the ocean’s serenity, the prestige of prime waterfront property, or the unparalleled lifestyle that comes with coastal living, the allure of coastal properties remains as strong as the waves that lap at their shores. And as global demand continues to rise, the appeal of South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal North Coast is only set to increase, and established yet forwardthinking developments like Zimbali Estate are at the forefront of this trend, as a personal retreat and a sound long-term investment.

Fort Lauderdale in Florida is known for its beaches and boating canals
Coastal real estate will always be the gold standard in luxury living, offering an unbeatable combination of natural beauty, exclusivity, and investment potential. Waking up to the sound of the waves, or taking a walk on the cool sand, feeling the earth beneath your feet as the ocean breeze sweeps in, reminds you that living by the ocean is more than just a lifestyle – it’s a connection to nature and a conscious choice to live in harmony with the world around you.

THE LATEST NEWS AND TRENDS IN HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Wellness is undergoing a profound transformation, expanding beyond diet and exercise to embrace a holistic lifestyle that connects mind, body, and planet. Driven by technology, changing health perspectives, and a push for sustainability, today’s wellness trends are more personalised, integrative, and community-focused, encompassing physical fitness, mental health, emotional balance, and environmental responsibility. Here are some of the key trends shaping health and wellbeing.
AI WELLNESS SOLUTIONS
The rapid evolution of AI and machine learning is transforming personalised wellness. Wearable devices go beyond tracking steps and heart rates, and analyse real-time biomarkers to offer tailored health insights. This technology can help individuals monitor sleep, stress, and mental wellbeing more effectively. AI is also set to revolutionise telehealth, enabling virtual personal trainers, nutritionists, and therapists to provide customised recommendations based on data-driven information. As tech becomes seamlessly integrated into daily life, people are being empowered to take greater control of their health and wellbeing.
MENTAL WELLBEING
The importance of mental health is at the forefront of wellness conversations, with emotional wellbeing gaining the same importance as physical health. More workplaces and schools will adopt mental health support systems, offering stress management programmes, meditation spaces, and access to therapists. Mindfulness practices like breathwork and yoga will become embedded in daily routines, with a stronger focus on techniques like sound healing and brainwave synchronization. Apps designed to promote mindfulness and emotional resilience will help manage anxiety, depression, and the stress of modern living.
NATURE IMMERSION
With our increasingly digital lives, the need to disconnect is becoming more urgent. Digital detoxing is becoming a mainstream wellness trend, with people actively seeking opportunities to switch off from the virtual world and reconnect with nature. Wellness retreats offering digitalfree environments in natural settings will see a surge in popularity. Mindful walks in nature will continue to grow in popularity as people seek relief from overstimulation and screen fatigue. Outdoor adventure wellness, such as wilderness therapy, rock climbing, and forest hiking, will offer a combination of physical exercise, mental relaxation, and spiritual renewal, helping reset mind and body, away from technology.
REGENERATIVE HEALTH
A growing health trend is regenerative wellness, which links personal wellbeing with the health of the planet. People are increasingly recognising that sustainable choices are vital not just for themselves but for the Earth’s future. This shift is reflected in eco-friendly wellness practices, like using locally sourced, sustainable ingredients in food and beauty products, and supporting brands with transparent supply chains. The wellness industry is evolving toward regenerative practices, promoting soil health, biodiversity, and energyefficient solutions. From climate-positive retreats to eco-conscious skincare, this trend highlights a deeper connection between self-care and caring for the environment.

What makes Marrakesh a unique wellness destination is its ability to seamlessly combine luxury with authentic cultural experiences. Many of the city’s riads have transformed into wellness sanctuaries, where private spa treatments, personalised wellness programs, and exclusive yoga sessions are tailored to individual needs. There’s nothing more relaxing than stepping out of a calming hammam treatment, onto your rooftop terrace, to watch the city’s bustling medina or the sun set over the Atlas Mountains.
Several of Marrakesh’s high-end hotels and resorts have also embraced this wellness culture, offering retreats that blend yoga, pilates, and meditation with bespoke detox menus, hydrotherapy pools, and wellness workshops. Some even offer private hammam experiences within guest suites, providing ultimate relaxation in an opulent setting.
A Holistic Escape
Marrakesh is not just a city to explore, but a destination that invites you to slow down, reconnect with yourself, and embrace the local rhythm of life. Whether you’re indulging in the soothing rituals of the hammam, hiking through the mountains, or practicing mindfulness in the desert, Marrakesh offers a deeply transformative experience.
As a wellness destination, Marrakesh invites you to step into a world where the old and the new coexist harmoniously. Its wellness traditions, rooted in centuries of culture, combined with the opulence of modern luxury, create an environment that nurtures both the body and the soul. For those seeking a wellness retreat with a cultural twist, Marrakesh offers the perfect sanctuary.
So, when it comes to wellness, Marrakesh is no longer just a hidden gem – it’s a destination worth every moment of indulgence.

THE POWER OF GRANDPARENTING
CREATING A LEGACY OF LOVE AND WELLBEING ACROSS THE GENERATIONS
In a fast-paced world driven by technological advancements, the enduring bonds between generations remain essential for emotional, mental, and social wellbeing. Grandparents have long been pillars of wisdom, love, and stability, anchoring family life and providing invaluable support. Recent research highlights the profound benefits of intergenerational relationships, showing that interactions between grandparents and grandchildren enrich not only families but also society at large. These connections foster positive emotional health, cognitive development, and resilience in both the young and the elderly, creating lasting impacts across generations.
Grandparents are traditionally valued for their wisdom and unconditional love, yet their influence runs even deeper. Studies indicate that elderly individuals who regularly engage with younger generations experience improved cognitive function, better emotional health, and reduced loneliness. In turn, children who enjoy consistent interactions with older adults develop stronger social skills, emotional regulation, and empathy. This cycle of mutual support enhances wellbeing and strengthens community bonds.
A Stanford Centre on Longevity study found that structured interactions between seniors and children boost mood and cognitive engagement in older adults while enhancing emotional intelligence and reducing fear of ageing in children. Recognising these benefits, innovative care models worldwide increasingly bridge generational gaps by combining retirement homes with daycare facilities, where activities like art, games, and storytelling foster learning, play, and emotional connection. These arrangements decrease isolation among seniors while supporting children’s social and emotional growth in a nurturing environment.
Examples of this approach can be seen globally. In the Netherlands, the Humanitas Retirement Home in Deventer offers free housing to university students in exchange for time spent with elderly residents. While this model involves young adults rather than children, it fosters a similar reciprocal benefit – elderly residents experience renewed purpose and connection, while students gain life experience and meaningful relationships. In Japan, some daycares are integrated within elderly care facilities, where children and seniors participate in activities that promote companionship and mutual learning, further improving cognitive function and emotional health for seniors and fostering empathy in children.
The bond between grandparents and grandchildren, however, remains one of the most enriching connections in family life. Beyond occasional caregiving, grandparents offer continuity, stability, and a link to family history and traditions, providing children with a comforting sense of identity and belonging.
Research shows that children with close relationships with their grandparents develop higher self-esteem, greater resilience, and improved emotional regulation. Grandparents provide unique support during challenging times, such as family stress or parental separation, and their steady presence reinforces security and stability for children.
For grandparents, these interactions provide renewed purpose, life satisfaction, and cognitive engagement. Engaging with young, curious minds helps seniors stay mentally active, which can promote better physical health and longevity. Studies show that grandparents who regularly care for their grandchildren often lead more active lives, which reduces symptoms of depression and combats loneliness.
Additionally, intergenerational relationships help counteract ageism by allowing younger generations to witness ageing as a natural and positive part of life. These bonds foster empathy and respect, nurturing an understanding of the ageing process.
Grandparents often act as cultural custodians, passing down traditions, values, and wisdom that reinforce family bonds and connect children to their heritage. Meanwhile, engaging with grandchildren keeps seniors in touch with contemporary ideas, technology, and cultural trends.
Grandparents also play a vital role in supporting parents, providing practical assistance and emotional guidance that can alleviate parental stress, leading to a more harmonious family life. Their emotional closeness with grandchildren helps to reduce symptoms of depression across generations, enhancing family-wide mental health.
As society evolves, the importance of intergenerational relationships remains constant. These connections, whether within family structures or through innovative care models, provide essential emotional, cognitive, and social benefits that ultimately foster compassionate, resilient communities. MULTI-GENERATIONAL
LITTLE THINGS The
Life’s storms often challenge us to reconsider what really counts, bringing small victories and acts of self-care into focus as tools and pathways to a more meaningful life.
While society celebrates big milestones, it’s the small, everyday joys – a cup of coffee in the morning, a fish eagle’s call, raindrops on your face, a moment of quiet – that provide true happiness, even amidst chaos.
In our fast-paced lives, we often overlook the power of minor achievements. Yet, research shows that acknowledging these small wins builds resilience and cultivates gratitude and positivity, essential for weathering life’s ups and downs. Celebrating small victories also fosters a mindset that sees hope even in dark times, offering comfort and perspective when we need it most. Neglecting small achievements can, however, drain our motivation and dampen our sense of self-worth, leading to feelings of stagnation. Especially after setbacks, even the smallest efforts – like getting out of bed or preparing a meal –deserve recognition. Celebrating them fuels a belief in our ability to grow and adapt, no matter the circumstances.
One way to do this is by keeping a gratitude journal – documenting daily wins, no matter how small, helps foster an optimistic outlook. Practicing mindfulness, through meditation or simply taking a few deep breaths, allows us to savour the present and appreciate what we have. Creating simple rituals, like rewarding yourself with a favourite treat or enjoying a quiet moment after completing a task, builds positive associations with these small victories. Sharing joy with loved ones can also amplify the celebration, strengthening connections and reinforcing the value of these moments. Finally, taking mental snapshots during joyful experiences – pausing to note the colours, sounds, and feelings – helps us build a mental gallery of happiness, enriching our lives with these small yet meaningful memories.
Adversity teaches us that small steps forward can transform setbacks into growth. Each small victory, whether a self-care habit or a learning experience, reclaims power, helping us find beauty and meaning in our lives and inspiring others to do the same.
In the end, life isn’t just about grand achievements, it’s about cherishing the journey. Small wins, like a baby’s smile or a gentle breeze, add layers of fulfilment. As we grow, it’s essential to celebrate these everyday joys, creating lasting memories, deep connections, and inner strength. By honouring our journeys and celebrating the little things, we weave moments together to make our lives richer, more resilient and more meaningful.

mehndi
THE ART OF CELEBRATION
MEHNDI, ALSO KNOWN AS HENNA, IS AN ANCIENT ART FORM WITH DEEP ROOTS IN SEVERAL CULTURES, AND IT IS LAYERED WITH MEANINGS THAT ELEVATE IT FAR BEYOND MERE AESTHETICS.
Particularly in South Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, mehndi is used in weddings, festivals, and religious ceremonies, and symbolises celebration, joy, and community bonding, making it a vibrant centrepiece in cultural traditions.
Traditionally, mehndi embodies happiness, unity, and prosperity. During Indian weddings, the bride’s hands and feet are adorned in intricate designs, each symbol conveying well-wishes for love, harmony, and luck in her new chapter. Mehndi’s fragrant scent and the deep, rich colour of the paste enhance the joyful atmosphere, creating a sense of occasion that all guests share. In Pakistan and the Middle East, women also gather for henna application before weddings, transforming it into a ritual of bonding and collective celebration.
Beyond weddings, mehndi is integral to festivals like Diwali, Karva Chauth, and Eid, where it marks new beginnings and collective joy. In Morocco, traditional ‘henna parties’ celebrate marriages and important life events, with bold, geometric designs believed to protect against negative energy. Each of these cultural expressions shows how mehndi is not only art but also a shared language of celebration and good fortune.
The origins of mehndi can be traced back over 5,000 years, beginning in ancient India, where it was used both as an Ayurvedic remedy for its cooling and healing properties and as a form of adornment. As mehndi spread across regions, it took on distinct regional styles, each unique in design and symbolism. Indian mehndi, for instance, is famous for its dense, intricate patterns often covering entire hands and arms, symbolising beauty, love, and spiritual connection. In contrast, Pakistani and Middle Eastern styles incorporate more geometric and abstract designs, with spaces between the patterns for a delicate look.
But while different cultures may adapt mehndi designs to their traditions, the underlying messages remain universal – mehndi communicates joy, love, and blessings, and it is a cherished emblem of cultural identity and heritage.
Today, mehndi continues to evolve, blending traditional motifs with contemporary symbols and personal interpretations. This evolution reflects a growing appreciation for the artistry and cultural resonance of mehndi, as people from diverse backgrounds incorporate their own meanings into the designs, while retaining the timeless expression of beauty and community.
In all its forms, mehndi stands as a testament to the beauty of tradition, unity, and shared joy, and its artistic patterns continue to narrate stories of happiness, connection, and the enduring spirit of celebration across cultures.

AI-DRIVEN SUSTAINABLE BUILDING INDUSTRY PRACTICES FOR THE FUTURE
WORDS CATE STEVENSON
AS THE WORLD GRAPPLES WITH THE ESCALATING CLIMATE CRISIS, THE
BUILDING INDUSTRY STANDS OUT AS A SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTOR TO THE PROBLEM, GENERATING NEARLY 40 PERCENT OF GLOBAL CARBON EMISSIONS.
The urgent need for change has prompted forward-thinking architects and innovators to explore sustainable architecture that prioritises environmental responsibility, while the rapid development of AI can also have substantial environmental impacts. By bringing AI’s capabilities together with carbon-sequestering materials and innovative design techniques, the construction industry could pivot from being a carbon emitter to an environmental steward and re-shape the future of sustainable building.
The Environmental Toll of Conventional Materials
For years, concrete and steel have dominated construction due to their durability, but they come with high environmental costs. Concrete alone accounts for around 8% of global CO₂ emissions. Meanwhile, alternatives like hempcrete, mycelium, and engineered timber not only require less energy to produce but also act as carbon sinks, actively absorbing and storing carbon during their growth and throughout their lifespan. Architects worldwide are now exploring these sustainable materials in projects that reduce emissions while contributing to a greener future.
An AI-Optimised Design Revolution
AI is revolutionising construction through predictive analytics and material optimisation. Advanced Building Information Modelling (BIM) tools use AI to simulate sustainable materials in real-time, allowing architects to test the durability and efficiency of carbon-sequestering options like mycelium and CLT. These simulations reduce waste by optimising designs before construction begins.
AI-driven algorithms are also reshaping the material sourcing process by analysing carbon footprints and selecting the most sustainable options. This technology makes materials like hempcrete and bio-based composites viable for large projects, pushing the construction industry toward greener alternatives and reducing dependency on highcarbon materials.
Extending Building Life Through AI
AI doesn’t stop at the building phase; it plays a vital role in extending the life and efficiency of structures. Smart sensors and IoT devices monitor building performance, help manage energy usage, reduce a building’s carbon footprint and optimise climate control and comfort for occupants. Predictive maintenance further enhances sustainability by alerting operators when repairs or replacements are necessary, reducing the waste and emissions associated with premature replacements. This AI-enabled approach turns maintenance into a proactive measure that aligns with environmental goals.
Automating Sustainable Construction
AI-driven robotics are changing construction processes, making it possible to implement sustainable practices on a large scale. Automated systems precisely apply low-carbon alternatives, including carbonsequestering concrete, which absorbs CO₂ during curing. This innovative method not only strengthens concrete but also locks in carbon permanently, lowering the environmental impact of traditionally highemission materials.
AI also makes it economically viable to use these sustainable materials in mainstream construction, accelerating the adoption of eco-friendly practices. As robotics and AI advance, they will make sustainable materials more accessible and standardised, turning carbon sequestration into an achievable goal for construction worldwide.
Water and Energy Efficiency in AI-Powered Sustainable Cities
AI extends its influence to water and energy management within buildings and urban areas, helping reduce waste and conserving resources. Smart energy systems powered by AI can adjust lighting, heating, and cooling based on occupancy, reducing a building’s energy consumption. Paired with carbon-sequestering materials, these systems ensure that buildings not only lower emissions but also minimise resource use.
In terms of water management, AI-driven sensors monitor usage and prevent waste, particularly in buildings made from biomaterials that rely on efficient hydration. These technologies allow urban structures to function harmoniously with local ecosystems, further supporting the movement toward sustainable cities.
The
Carbon-Sequestering City
AI’s capacity for data analysis allows it to support sustainable urban planning on a large scale. Predictive algorithms simulate the interactions of buildings, green spaces, and transit systems, allowing city planners to design layouts that optimise energy efficiency and reduce emissions. Organisations like the Carbon Leadership Forum are advocating for transparency in emissions reporting, encouraging AI-led data management across the industry.
In this vision, cities would feature high-rise timber buildings, myceliumbased public spaces, and green corridors that not only sequester carbon but also enhance biodiversity. These cities, shaped by AI and built from sustainable materials, could redefine urban living as a model for environmental stewardship.
A Sustainable Future in Construction
The combination of AI and carbon-sequestering materials marks a critical turning point for sustainable architecture. AI-powered solutions enhance efficiency and enable eco-friendly materials to be widely adopted, while carbon-sequestering materials transform buildings from carbon emitters into active carbon sinks. Although challenges in cost, data security, and training remain, the path forward is clear.
As AI and sustainable materials evolve, they will create new possibilities for urban development that aligns with planetary health. The future of construction is no longer solely about shelter but about actively contributing to the earth’s wellbeing. Through focused adoption and collaborative effort, the building industry can redefine itself, building not only for humanity but also in harmony with the natural world.

FLYING CARS WILL BE REVOLUTIONISING TRANSPORTATION IN THE NEAR FUTURE
WORDS DUMI SIGOGO
Flying cars have long captured the world’s imagination, sparking excitement about the future of transportation. This groundbreaking technology promises to offer a versatile and transformative approach to urban mobility. From road-and-air hybrids to advanced passenger drones, these vehicles are set to revolutionise how we navigate cities and beyond, opening up new possibilities for efficient, sustainable travel.
Once the stuff of science fiction, flying cars are now rapidly becoming a reality. They are poised to fundamentally change everyday travel, alleviating traffic congestion, improving access to remote areas, and making commutes faster and more efficient. Globally, momentum is building, moving beyond mere concept and experimentation. Industries are beginning to invest heavily in the necessary infrastructure, with early-stage prototypes already undergoing testing in several regions –and South Africa’s interest mirrors a worldwide enthusiasm for technologies that address key challenges in transportation, green energy, and urban planning.
But will cars really fly? And if so, how will they operate? When will we see the first flying car in action? These are common questions asked when people first encounter the concept. The public’s vision of the ideal flying car is a convenient, everyday vehicle that can drive, fly, and park anywhere without the need for hangars, airports, or runways. And visionary startups in the automotive, aerospace, and tech sectors are racing to turn this dream into reality. As the flying car industry rapidly accelerates, large corporations and governments must act quickly or risk missing out, much like they did during the rise of mobile phones and the internet.
Globally, many companies are already in advanced stages of developing flying cars. Additionally, Vertical Takeoff and Landing vehicles (VTOLs) are already in use. These aircraft, designed for vertical lift and landing in compact spaces called vertiports, eliminate the need for long runways. While VTOLs are focused solely on aerial transport, flying cars are designed to seamlessly switch between driving and flying, merging the best of both worlds.
There are some groundbreaking projects set to make flying cars commercially available as early as 2025.
One such project involves Durban-based Adept Airmotive Technologies, which has been developing engines for the AirCar, a dual-mode vehicle that received a Certificate of Airworthiness from the Slovak Transport Authority in 2022. AirCar, created by Klein Vision, will be powered by Adept Airmotive’s efficient, low-emission engines. This sleek vehicle can transform from a road car into a two-passenger aircraft, reaching speeds of over 300 km/h with a range of 1,000 km. Future models will include four-passenger and possibly amphibious versions.
US-based Alef Aeronautics’ Model A is designed to function like a regular car but also takes flight. In 2023, it earned Special Airworthiness Certification from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration. Model A can drive 322 km and fly 177 km, with top speeds of 201 km/h on land and 257 km/h in the air. Expected to launch in 2025, depending on regulatory approvals and production readiness, Alef aims to make flying cars more affordable by 2030.
Samson Sky’s Switchblade, awarded a US FAA certificate in 2023, offers both left- and righthand drive, making it globally adaptable. This three-wheeled hybrid vehicle can hit speeds of 201 km/h on the ground and 321 km/h in the air. While the Switchblade requires an airstrip for take-off, it transforms from car to plane in just three minutes, features an 800 km flight range and runs on regular petrol.
The Liberty Sport by PAL-V International is a gyroplane capable of transitioning from car to aircraft in under five minutes. With a road speed of 160 km/h and a flight range of 400500 km, this vehicle is set to debut in 2025. Unlike VTOLs, it requires a short runway to take off, using a design similar to a small airplane.
Distinct with its rugged appearance, the Maverick was originally designed to reach remote areas, for missionary and humanitarian purposes. It can accelerate to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and take off within 91 meters. Streetlegal and classified as an experimental aircraft, it’s perfect for off-road adventures and flights into hard-to-reach regions.
For flying cars to become a reality, they will need approval from the relevant road and aviation authorities in every market where they are expected to operate. As the idea evolves from futuristic fantasy to common reality, development must focus on accessibility for a broad audience – not just the ultra-wealthy with both pilot and driver’s licenses.
The transition from concept to reality will have profound implications for transportation, technology, and society. Flying cars could revolutionise urban mobility, reduce congestion, and create new connections to remote areas. However, realising this thrilling future will require careful planning, regulatory oversight, and infrastructure to ensure smooth integration into daily life. While early models may be reserved for a select few, rapid technological advancements suggest that these vehicles could become mainstream much sooner than expected.

ZIMBALI ESTATE IS PROTECTING THE AFRICAN CROWNED EAGLE AMID EXPANDING URBAN LANDSCAPES
As urbanisation continues to expand across the globe, it poses a significant threat to wildlife.
Forests are replaced by concrete, wetlands are drained, and natural habitats are fragmented, creating a hostile environment for many species to survive. In South Africa, one such species under threat is the African crowned eagle, a powerful bird of prey that once thrived in expansive forested areas. However, as development encroaches further into these environments, the crowned eagle faces increasing challenges – especially when juveniles leave the nest and must navigate a world where their natural habitats are rapidly disappearing.
African crowned eagles are apex predators, crucial for maintaining the balance in ecosystems by controlling populations of medium-sized mammals. These birds, however, require large territories of dense forests to breed, hunt, and establish their nests. With South Africa’s urban sprawl expanding into traditional eagle habitats, these once-plentiful territories are becoming
scarce, and crowned eagles are finding it harder to thrive.
One of the most vulnerable periods for these birds is when juveniles leave the nest and begin searching for their own territory. Historically, they would have found ample forested areas to establish their own domains, but now, young eagles are forced into increasingly fragmented landscapes, bringing them into conflict with humans. Collisions with power lines, deforestation, and poisoning are just a few of the threats they face as they try to adapt to living on the fringes of urban areas.
For the crowned eagle, the consequences of this encroachment are profound. With fewer places to hunt and breed, populations decline, and the survival of future generations is put at risk. This challenge is not unique to South Africa but is echoed worldwide, where many species are losing their habitats to development.
In contrast to the pressures caused by urbanisation, residential estates can be urban sanctuaries to threatened wildlife species. Zimbali Estate is one eco-estate that offers a unique solution, proving that development and conservation can coexist harmoniously.
The estate’s environmentally conscious design ensures that its development does not disturb the delicate balance of the surrounding ecosystems, creating an ideal habitat for a variety of fauna and flora to thrive alongside human residents. Since its inception, the estate has embraced a model of ‘living in harmony with nature’ that prioritises the preservation of its natural environment. Here, a breeding pair of African crowned eagles has been taking advantage of the estate’s protected natural forest as their sanctuary, for many years. The dense forest cover at Zimbali Estate, free from the pressures of urban encroachment, allows the eagles to breed safely and maintain their place at the top of the food chain.
Zimbali Estate’s approach to conservation goes beyond simply protecting the eagles’ immediate environment. By working with researchers and conservationists, the estate employs GPS tracking to monitor the eagles’ movements, feeding patterns, and nesting behaviours. This research helps to understand the broader challenges these eagles face and provides vital information that can be used to shape conservation strategies, both on the estate and in other regions.
The success of Zimbali Estate in protecting its crowned eagles is a powerful example of how responsible development can serve as a solution, rather than a threat, to wildlife conservation. While urbanisation continues to be a major issue for biodiversity globally, Zimbali Estate shows that it is possible to balance growth with the protection of natural environments.
By setting aside large areas of land for conservation, promoting biodiversity, and engaging in active wildlife monitoring, residential estates can offer a model for future development projects. In a world where natural habitats are shrinking at an alarming rate, these kinds of conservation-focused estates are essential for the survival of species like the African crowned eagle. As urbanisation continues to encroach on their natural homes, it’s critical that developers follow the example of Zimbali Estate by incorporating wildlife preservation into their planning and execution. Such an approach not only benefits the eagles but also enriches the lives of residents who have an incredible opportunity to live in harmony with nature.
The plight of the African crowned eagle reflects a broader, global struggle for wildlife survival in the face of rapid urbanisation. Yet, through the efforts of forward-thinking conservation projects, there is hope. Zimbali Estate’s protected natural forests provide a glimpse into a future where humans and nature can coexist peacefully, and where development does not come at the expense of wildlife.
By offering sanctuary to the crowned eagle, Zimbali Estate ensures that this awe-inspiring species continues to soar above its forests, a symbol of resilience amidst the challenges of a changing world. If more developments embrace conservation as a core principle, the future of the African crowned eagle and countless other species facing similar threats from urbanisation, can be secured.
IN THIS DELICATE BALANCE BETWEEN PROGRESS AND PRESERVATION, ZIMBALI ESTATE STANDS AS A BEACON OF WHAT IS POSSIBLE WHEN WE PRIORITISE NATURE ALONGSIDE DEVELOPMENT – OFFERING A REFUGE FOR WILDLIFE AND A MODEL FOR SUSTAINABLE LIVING IN AN INCREASINGLY URBAN WORLD.
Leadership MINDFUL
A NEW ERA OF LEADERS ARE CULTIVATING PRESENCE AND PURPOSE IN MODERN WORKPLACES
In an era where leaders are expected to navigate complex challenges and inspire diverse teams, mindful leadership has emerged as a powerful approach. Unlike traditional leadership models that often emphasise external goals and outcomes, mindful leadership focuses on inner awareness, presence, and compassion, fostering environments where people feel seen, valued, and motivated.
At its core, mindful leadership is about being fully present in each moment. Leaders who practice mindfulness develop a heightened self-awareness that allows them to tune into their thoughts and emotions without letting stress or distractions dictate their responses. This conscious awareness enables leaders to respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively, resulting in stronger interpersonal relationships and better decisions. Mindfulness also builds emotional resilience, allowing leaders to handle pressure with calm and clarity, setting a positive tone for their teams.
Being present is a fundamental aspect of mindful leadership. It involves fully engaging with the current moment – whether in a meeting, a conversation, or while addressing a crisis – without being sidetracked by past experiences or future anxieties. This presence cultivates a deeper connection with team members, fostering trust and open communication. When leaders are genuinely present, they create a supportive atmosphere where team members feel encouraged to share ideas, express concerns, and collaborate effectively.
This concept of being present directly relates to leadership presence, a quality that defines effective leaders. Leadership presence encompasses a leader’s ability to command attention, inspire confidence, and engage others. It is not merely about charisma or authority – it is about the leader’s authenticity and ability to connect on a human level. Mindful leaders exude this presence by demonstrating empathy, active listening, and a genuine interest in their team’s wellbeing.
Practicing mindful leadership often involves simple techniques such as regular meditation, breathing exercises, or brief reflective pauses throughout the day. These practices help leaders cultivate empathy and focus, fostering a leadership style that emphasises active listening, clear communication, and open-mindedness. Teams led by mindful leaders frequently report lower stress levels, higher engagement, and a stronger sense of connection to their work, as mindful leaders create an inclusive, positive environment that prioritises wellbeing alongside productivity.
Ultimately, mindful leadership is not just about achieving business success, it’s about leading with authenticity, compassion, and purpose. In a world increasingly filled with distractions and demands, mindful leadership offers a way to build resilient, empowered teams who feel motivated to contribute meaningfully, and to fostering a supportive and inclusive work environment.
You can’t be a good leader without being a good person.

LEAD THE WAY
WITH FRANCOIS SCHOEMAN
THE ONLY CONSTANT IN LEADERSHIP IS CHANGE
In a world where nothing stays still, leadership must be as fluid and adaptable as the challenges we face. As leaders, we often divide our attention across the short, medium, and long term, balancing daily demands with strategic visions for the future. Yet, in today’s rapidly evolving landscape, the need to anticipate and adjust has never been greater.
Adaptive leaders spend significant time reflecting on the bigger picture, scanning the horizon for signals of change, and responding before others even recognise the need to act. This foresight allows them to navigate volatile markets, recalibrate strategies, and steer their organisations towards opportunities others might miss.
We live in an era where unpredictability reigns, where the only certainty is the inevitability of change. Adaptive leadership, then, is not merely a skill but a lifeline. Leaders today must not only react to crises but anticipate them, continually adjusting their course to ensure longevity and success in the face of increasing uncertainty.
The forces driving change are many and often interlinked. Climate change disrupts supply chains with extreme weather events, driving up operational costs as businesses race to comply with evolving environmental regulations. Natural disasters, once deemed rare, now occur with growing frequency, leaving entire industries reeling in their wake. Technological advancements like artificial intelligence and automation redefine industries overnight, requiring leaders to rethink business models and workforce capabilities.
On top of this, social unrest – strikes, protests, and even political corruption – threatens stability and security, halting operations and unsettling markets. Global pandemics force businesses to confront the fragility of traditional systems, while violence and war ripple across interconnected economies with alarming speed, challenging leaders to think globally but act locally.
Each of these factors is a reminder that the world we lead in today no longer follows predictable patterns. The playbook of the past no longer applies, and leaders must instead embrace a new paradigm defined by agility, resilience, and foresight.
What separates successful leaders from those who flounder is not the avoidance of setbacks but the ability to turn adversity into opportunity. Adaptive leadership is grounded in the understanding that change is not an enemy to be feared but a catalyst for growth. Leaders who thrive in this era see obstacles as stepping stones, allowing them to evolve, innovate, and emerge stronger than before.
This mindset requires more than just strategic planning. It demands a willingness to remain vigilant, keeping an eye out for subtle shifts that may signal future challenges. Whether it’s a new technology, a changing regulation, or an emerging social trend, adaptive leaders are always preparing for what lies ahead, and ensuring that their organisations are ready to pivot when needed.
While adaptability requires strategic flexibility, it also hinges on people. The systems and processes within a business are important, but true adaptability comes from the individuals who make up an organisation. Investing in your teams through training, mental health support, or fostering an inclusive environment, ensures that they are equipped to handle uncertainty and motivated to drive innovation.
Moreover, the ability to embrace uncertainty begins with empowering teams. Innovation often starts from the ground up, and adaptive leaders know that the best ideas arise when employees feel trusted and empowered to experiment. By fostering a culture where taking risks is encouraged and new solutions are celebrated, leaders create environments where creativity flourishes, and adaptability becomes second nature.
In times of crisis, transparency becomes a leader’s greatest asset. Open communication builds trust, and in moments of unpredictability, trust is invaluable. Adaptive leaders prioritise clarity, sharing what they know with their teams and stakeholders, even when they don’t have all the answers. In a world where nothing is certain, trust is the most stable foundation a leader can build.
Human and organisational resilience is key to thriving in a volatile world. Leaders must ensure that their businesses are fortified against future shocks, whether by diversifying supply chains, investing in sustainable practices, or crafting
robust crisis management strategies. Redundancy and flexibility in operations create a buffer against unforeseen disruptions, enabling organisations to recover quickly and seize new opportunities.
In addition to operational resilience, we face the dual challenge of integrating rapid technological advances and addressing the pressing realities of climate change and social unrest. The rise of AI presents enormous potential but also significant ethical considerations. Leaders must guide their organisations through these technological shifts while ensuring that the workforce is reskilled and prepared for the future. At the same time, taking a proactive approach to sustainability is no longer optional, but essential for long-term success.
As we navigate this age of unpredictability, it is important to remember that leadership is not defined by rigid adherence to old strategies but by the courage to chart new paths. The future will belong to those who can lead with agility, empathy, and vision – those who understand that change is not just inevitable, but a powerful force for progress.
Adaptive leadership is not about having all the answers. Instead, it’s about being ready to evolve, to listen, and to act decisively in the face of uncertainty. The world will continue to shift in unexpected ways, but those who can anticipate, pivot, and lead with resilience will not only survive, they will also thrive. Our legacy as leaders will be shaped by how well we embrace the unknown and then turn it into opportunity.
Change is the only constant To manage it , leaders must constantly adapt and evolve
