New attempts at agro-pastoral symbiosis in the Sahel region

2023 Academy award- China Interior and Environmental Design Competition(Golden Award)

Year:2022

Location:Darfur,Sultan

Type:architectural design

Individual project

The Darfur region is located in the western part of Sudan in the Sahel region of Africa, where conflicts and wars are frequent, the root cause of which is natural disasters leading to competition between nomadic and farming peoples for land, water and other resources. Due to the arid and harsh environment, it is difficult for traditional forms of housing and industry to meet the needs of the people, and this program aims to design sustainable symbiotic buildings that can cope with the climate challenges.

The super high-rise complex integrates housing, farming, animal husbandry, and energy circulation, and through replicable unit modules, it takes into account the lives and production of farmers and herders, realizing self-sufficiency, resource replacement, and cultural integration, and emphasizing the values of human rights and equality. The building realizes sustainable energy circulation by collecting water resources, utilizing recyclable energy and purifying waste resources, which is a sustainable win-win situation for man and nature. The project responds to a complex awareness of the larger site and environmental context while considering the details of the building itself.

Africa Sahel

Located in the western part of the Eastern Hemisphere, spanning north and south of the equator, it is the second largest continent in the world.

The Sahel is Arabic, which means "edge". It is the Median strip and combination zone of nature, nationality and religion of the African continent.

After 1967, the rainfall in Sudan has been very low. Serious drought and famine occurred in Darfur, and a large number of nomadic Arabs with livestock poured into the heart of Fur people.

150 people in the Darfur region died in battles over land and pastures.

A three-year conflict began between the Arabs and the Masalites.

The crisis in Darfur has attracted the attention of the international community.

The Sudanese government is holding negotiations with the main opposition in Darfur.

The traditional Buddhist temple complexes are

and have a single function, which belongs to the traditional "sacred" space. With the development of the times, traditional religious activities have become more and more daily and secularized, and modern Buddhist temples should also carry more "secular" functions of religious activities. Therefore, based on the study of comparing the religious life in China and the West, the project needs to rethink the relationship between "sacred" and "secular". Therefore, based on the study of religious life in China and the West, the project needs to rethink the rationality of the dichotomy between "sacred" and "secular" religious space in modern society.

Bamboo is a building material closely related to the Dai culture, low-carbon and renewable, and a metaphor for religious culture. This project aims to provide another possibility for Buddhist architecture. By using the most common bamboo resources in the region, different types of bamboo are selected and combined with a variety of jointing methods to complete the construction, realizing the sustainability cycle of human beings, architecture, religion and nature. The project aims to create an architectural complex that balances religious activities with traditional culture.

A New Attempt at Buddhist Bamboo Architecture Centered on Fine Culture in Xishuangbanna In Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Region, Yunnan Province, China, the Buddhist culture is flourishing, and there are many Buddhist temple complexes, and the "fine" culture runs through the spiritual world of the Dai people, and is the most important religious behavior of the Dai people. surrounded by walls

Xishuangbanna is located in the northern edge of Asian tropics, with warm and rainy year-round tropical monsoon climate. The average annual temperature is 18-22 degrees Celsius, the annual rainfall is 1200-1900 millimeters, and the average annual relative humidity is 85%, so the natural conditions are excellent. The region belongs to the IndoMalayan flora and is rich in plant resources, of which bamboo plants are an important part.

In the Dai area of Xishuangbanna, the masses generally believe in Hinayana Buddhism, and most villages have their own Buddhist temples, and children are destined to be Buddhist believers from birth. Every man, from childhood onwards, has to spend a period of time away from his family in a monastery, for a few months or a few years. Every man, from childhood onwards, has to spend a period of time away from his family in a monastery, ranging from a few months to several decades. In this way, Hinayana Buddhism has widely penetrated into all areas of the social life of the Dai people. In this way, Hinayana Buddhism has widely penetrated into all areas of the social life of the Dai people.

Fine Buddha activities are frequent religious activities held by the followers of Dai Southern Buddhism, including offerings to Buddha and monks, sacrifices to ancestors, the dead, ghosts and gods, and almsgiving to Buddha and temples and various public places, etc. The contents are very extensive.Temple and all kinds of public places, such as alms giving, etc., the content is very extensive. Fine Buddhist activities have multiple social functions, such as collaboration and integration, mutual assistance and sharing, festivals and gatherings, and artistic performances and inheritance. social functions. The socialization of fine Buddhist activities makes the influence of such individual and regional Buddhist activities constantly enlarged and expanded, transforming from individual behavior to village behavior, upgrading to regional behavior, and becoming a link between the individual and regional Buddhist activities. It has been upgraded from individual behavior to village behavior and from village behavior to regional behavior, and has become an important link between the Dai followers and the Dai society.

Bamboo Resource Analysis

Bamboo has the advantages of light weight, high strength and toughness. Its tensile and compressive strength is twice that of wood, and it enjoys the reputation of "plant steel". Bamboo can grow fast, replacing some wood with bamboo can avoid the transitional deforestation, and can be completely decomposed after the demolition of the building and join the ecological cycle to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality; Bamboo branches and leaves, developed roots, with the regulation of air quality and maintain soil and water conservation, good function, conducive to the ecological balance. Reasonable felling of bamboo materials will not damage the ecological environment, but can promote the metabolism of bamboo forests.

Bamboo produces whips, whips produce bamboo shoots, bamboo shoots grow bamboo, and bamboo feeds whips" by asexual reproduction.

6.Cutting and molding of bamboo

5.Fire and moth proofing of bamboo

while molding processes bamboo into specific products and building materials of different sizes.

4.Drying and preservation of bamboo

4.Drying and preservation are very important parts of the bamboo manufacturing process.

1.Selection and cutting of bamboo

1.Generally 5-8 years have been timber can be harvested to winter and spring is the best. Winter, the weather is dry and cold, when the bamboo physiological function activity is rapidly weakened, the water content is also very little, and the bamboo material organization structure is close, the texture is tough, the strength is big, the moth is difficult to infringe. This is the golden season to cut bamboo.

2.Bamboo harvesting and collection

2. The manufacturing process of bamboo timber begins with the harvesting and collection of bamboo. When harvesting, care should be taken to protect the roots of the bamboo to avoid damaging the bamboo's growing environment.

3.Handling and splitting of bamboo

3.The top and bottom of the bamboo are first removed, and then the bamboo is cut to the desired length using a saw. During this process, attention needs to be paid to the cutting direction of the bamboo so as not to affect the subsequent manufacturing process.

Individual project

This project translates the works of photographer Salgado into a tragic narrative architecture, extracting tragic archetypes from the photographs. The work is summarized into six journeys, refining the inner activities, emotional values and connotations of each journey, and six different spaces are constructed through different combinations of materials and light, so that visitors can feel the mapping of the photographer's feelings in different periods of his photographic career when they travel in the building, which is aimed at telling a truth: human ingenuity pushes itself further and further, out of Africa towards the world, out of the jungle towards civilization, but the selfishness, greed, cruelty, and the lack of human ingenuity are not the only factors that can make the building more and more interesting. However, the selfishness, greed, cruelty and violence of human beings will ultimately lead to their own destruction, and human beings should reflect on this and open up self-redemption. This is a tribute to Mother Earth, a rediscovery of human nature, and full of hope for the rebirth of the planet.

THE SALT OF THE EARTH
11
Tragic Narrative Architecture - Reflections on the Translation of Salgado's Photographs. The design is called "Salt of the Earth", a name taken from the Bible and also the name of the documentary on Salgado's photographic career. The Brazilian photographer Salgado insisted on taking photographs from the spirit of humanitarianism, and his works tell a story with the visual impact of "typical moments, dramatic effects, and grand narrative energy".

Name Sebastiao Salgado

Nationality Brazil

Professional | Photographer

Photography Category | Documentary Photography

Salgado integrates photography with his political commitment, religious beliefs, and hometown sentiments to form his unique and vast baroque image style. Salgado's birthplace, Brazil, is a country whose economic development is limited by geography, a long history of colonization, and the maintenance of a political system of big farmers and elites, which makes the gap between the rich and the poor always become the focus of Salgado's attention. As a young man, Salgado's participation in left-wing political movements led him to pay more attention to the voices of the underprivileged. He rebelled against injustice and became involved in many non-governmental, transnational, and nonprofit organizations in hopes of achieving the ideal blueprint for a more equitable society. "I am from an underdeveloped country and through photography, try to shed light on this exploitative world in order to give it back the dignity it deserves. Through my photographs, hope to show this dignified yet exploited world to the European community."

Brazi Dorsey River basin Hermes Terra Institute

The program is based in Salgado's hometown of Emores, Brazil, in the rainforest where the photographer grew up, and where his family built the Terra Institute to save the rainforest, which was once barren due to climate and deforestation.

It expresses Salgado's homesickness and love of the South American landscape.

For the second filming project, Salgado was involved in covering one of the largest famines in human history to date.

The History of Human Archaeology in the Industrial Age. Photographed refugees and displaced people in 43 countries on six continents, including those leaving the countryside for the cities.

A rainforest planting program. A Love Letter to the Earth. Salgado made the transition from social documentary to landscape and animal photography.

Deforestation and fires are a growing problem in the Amazonian forest zone, and Salgado visits dozens of local indigenous tribes.

His son Juliano was born, with Paris, and grew up to become the director of Salt of the Earth. He was introduced to photography and fell in love with the art of the moment.

He is acquainted with his wife. His wife has since aided his photographic vision.

Salgado has witnessed the darkness of the world firsthand, and as a result he begins to question his photography program, as well as his own role in this holocaust of humanity. He joined Médecins Sans Frontières.

The journey from two dimensions into three, down the ramp and into the "inside of the pyramid" begins.

Translated in two works, Human Hands and Exodus, this was the worst phase of the photographer's psychological state and he was depressed. Exodus was Salgado's last social documentary photography project. The space simulates the structure of a burned down building after a fire, with rough materials and a mirrored floor, so that a person descending the stairs can look across the space to the people on the other side of the room. The light from the ceiling is blocked by pillars, making the space dark and

SEWING FOLDED CITY

Re-planning of historic districts on the basis of traditional urban landscape and cultural heritage

Year: 2024

Location:Lixia District, Jinan, Shandong Province,China

Type:Urban design

Individual project

As China gradually enters the era of transforming from incremental expansion to stock optimization, this project attempts to reconcile the conflict between preservation and renewal of the heritage of the old city of Jinan, China. Rapid urban development has led to severe gentrification in the old city, which has resulted in the alienation of public space, poor preservation of spring water heritage, and an imbalance between public space and people's daily needs due to a variety of factors. The spatial and social segregation between the old city buildings and the modernized new city is gradually formed.

This project tries to reverse the imbalance between commercial and traditional cultural development. I hope to take the traditional cultural heritage as the background, extract the traditional elements and forms of the old city, and apply the folding theory to design diversified spatial forms to satisfy the needs of different people's lives. Folding theory is also applied to the macro scale of urban planning, creating multi-level transportation to make the space more mobile, and arranging the public space with the spring vein as the core, restoring the unique spring street scene, and ultimately generating sustainable and adaptive architectural clusters.

Ⅲ Format

Construction Forms

With the construction of new towns around them, the buildings are getting taller and taller, and the perception of even the limited height old towns is declining in the midst of this rapid urban development.

Existing Businesses

Continuing the historical spatial pattern, the spring-centered style of the old town is generated on the basis of the central axis of the spring city.

The public spaces of the springs vary in scale and flexibility.

Spring water resources are rich and diverse in type. Comparing from the scope of Jinan city, there is a high density of springs in the ancient city and a high proportion of famous springs. However, some of the spring veins have been turned into culverts due to later construction, which has broken the spring canals.

Spatial perception of springs by the public is poor due to the dispersed nature of the springs in the old city. The better known buried springs and spring canals occupied by buildings are in urgent need of restoration.

Businesses dominated by commercial and Netflix commodities occupy a large proportion, the functional structure tends to be single, and the uniqueness of the ancient city has not been fully utilized.

Ⅳ Cultures

Jinan Traditional Folklore

Traditional folklore such as embroidery, clay sculpture, spring water festivals and shadow puppets have not been well developed and there is a lack of understanding by outsiders.

Five-minute walk

Major streets and alleys are generally spaced 60-120 meters apart, while minor alleys are more flexibly distributed and generally spaced at intervals of no more than 225 meters.

Inadequate slow traffic system

Due to the rise of underground springs in summer, the amount of rainwater increases and untimely drainage, water can accumulate in the streets and alleys by about 200-300 millimeters.

Fifteen-minute

Ten-minute walk

High density of cultural resources, but no functional advantage immovable cultural relics and historical buildings: concentration of resources, but low degree of openness and insufficient protection and display.

Ⅴ Dwelling

Distribution of springs in the compound

The traditional courtyard is presented in the form of a compound. However, at present, the building density is high, the combination form between the courtyards is chaotic, and the unauthorized additions and deletions of building blocks are confusing.

The indigenous residents of the old town, mostly retired senior citizens, need more space for recreational activities.

Newcomers to the Old Town, mostly young people who work in the neighborhood, rent houses here.

The Old Town, a new transformation of culture and commerce, attracts many tourists, including photographers, youtubers, and more.

The old town needed a blend of commerce and culture, so people were allowed to start their own businesses and put their products up for sale.

Old craftsmen and non-geneticists set the tone for the culture of the urban area, creating a culture-led transformation of the space.
