Romy Pocztaruk
Galería Zielinsky presents “Safira”, the first solo show by the Brazilian artist Romy Pocztaruk, in the framework of the LOOP City Screen Festival. Galería Zielinsky is pleased to present “Safira”, the first solo show by the artist Romy Pocztaruk in Barcelona. In this exhibition, Romy proposes a set of works created between 2018 and 2019, under the question: Are we able to coexist, or do we fail in the attempt? The works build settings where images from different historical eras overlap each other. Through the richness of textures, which combine 16mm, 35mm and digital for- mats, an idea of coexistence or multiple existence is created, while the viewer contem- plates a world in ruins. The images, coming from NASA archives and digitally colored by the artist, are articulated with the coldness of those who witness the disaster of another planet, solitary objects flashing in a distant darkness. The film that gives its name to this exhibition, “Safira” (Sapphire), has been developed by Romy Pocztaruk and Lívia Pasqual, and performed by Filipe Catto. As a voice that foreshadows the tragedy, the original music announces the next explosion. “Safira” observes the destruction of another planet in the same way that we contemplate the fragmentation of our own world. “Safira” articulates that we will find new stars, that “there will be a day when we understand darkness”, but we all know that the end has come. The photographs that complete the show jump from the film’s frames, achieving a static, weightless movement, and reveal a disturbing atmosphere, where, antagonisti- cally, in the spectator’s flickering anything can happen. In the alterity between man, the subject and the other, the animal that inhabits us, “Safira”, is an enigmatic film. It is the one and the other. It is the man and his double, wondering: Anyone there? Anyone there? and answering: What are you actually looking for?
