Thunder eggs are so-called because of legends that they were thrown down from the mountains by angry ancient gods amid fierce thunder and lightning storms. An active collector, Jim enjoys sharing his finds with friends but notes that his wife has first choice among them. He encourages everyone to visit Rockhound State Park, while adding a kindly but important word of caution for newcomers: “Dress properly. Don’t go rockhounding in flip-flops, a t-shirt and shorts. Wear sturdy shoes, long pants, long sleeves and a hat, and carry plenty of water.” Once specimens have been collected, they can be left in a raw state or ‘finished’ by cutting, polishing and mounting. That’s where the Deming Gem & Mineral Society, Inc. comes in. At its headquarters near the fairgrounds, the organization maintains a large lapidary shop where members can transform raw mineral specimens into unique display objects and jewelry. The Society, which has a nationwide membership, also sponsors an impressive annual gem and mineral show called the Rockhound Roundup, and
