Deming’s Facade Squad:

Dressing UP

DOWN TOWN Lately passersby have noticed a change to the building at 118 W. Pine Street. Over the winter, the building received a crisp and attractive new store-

front courtesy of a group of volunteers known as the Façade Squad, sponsored by the Deming MainStreet Program. The building on

Pine Street, which houses a printed apparel store, was the first of what the group hopes will be a series of such projects to be completed in the downtown area. Operated under the direction of the New Mexico Department of Economic Development, the New Mexico MainStreet Project is intended to revitalize downtown commercial areas in towns and cities around the state, while preserving local history. The program relies on private funding, such as that which comes from the non-profit Friends of NM MainStreet, and the labor force is comprised primarily of volunteers, as are the local Façade Squads. Each year, two communities are awarded ‘scholarships’ to purchase materials for refurbishing some of their downtown storefronts. While the program cannot and is not intended to renovate entire downtown areas, it is hoped that restoring a few key storefronts in each community will inspire other business and property owners to get involved and perform makeovers on their own buildings. According to local Façade Squad volunteer and Deming Mainstreet VicePresident Chris Stevens, the aim of the group is to move ahead “one building at a time to change the face of Deming.” Other storefront facelifts are currently in the planning stages, and we look forward to seeing the results.

f

WRITTEN BY BRETT FERNEU PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOE BURGESS or a small town, Deming seems to contain more than its share of competent, dedicated people engaged in a broad diversity of

interests and careers. In this edition of Deming Horizons, we pro-

file three women whose careers seem to have little in common

except the passion for excellence with which they are pursued.

While Dona Irwin, Diane Hudgens, and DJ Nelson are our friends

and neighbors, they are also, respectively, our hard-working state representative, an accomplished fine art photographer and the general manager of an award-winning hotel. Join us as we take the opportunity to get to know each of these individuals better.

above: Three Deming achievers with a passion for excellence include State Representative Dona Irwin, photographer Diane Hudgens and hotel manager DJ Nelson.

Dona Irwin STATE REPRESENTATIVE, DISTRICT 32 For over a decade, the interests and concerns of the people of Luna County have been voiced and defended in the state legislature by Dona Irwin, the lone representative from District 32. A lifetime resident of southwest New Mexico, Dona was born in Silver City and educated at Western New Mexico University before marrying Luna County resident Bert Irwin and settling here. Today, she says jokingly, “I’ve lived in Luna county for many more years than I lived in Grant County.” The family has maintained a farm northeast of Columbus, NM, for over fifty years. It is currently operated by the couple’s son, Craig. Her farming background has given Dona a great deal of empathy for the specialized problems of the agricultural community, which she transforms into positive action at the state capitol. During this last legislative session, for example, she sponsored two bills: the amendment of an 1897 statute providing penalties for leaving livestock gates open, and a bill supporting the development of disease-resistant strains of chiles, which in turn will help to support the $465 million New Mexico chile industry. Both bills passed. Despite all her work in the New Mexico legislature, Dona is best known to many residents as the ‘voice’ of First New Mexico Bank in Deming, where she has worked for twenty years. As the marketing officer, she has recorded many radio commercials and phone messages for the bank throughout the years. Asked what the future may hold in store, Dona notes that legislative redistricting will begin soon, as a result of the 2010 U.S. Census. “Luna county has grown,” she says. “ I would like to keep it all together as District 32, so that all the people can be represented by the same voice in the legislature. That’s very important to me.”

Diane Hudgens FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHER

Viewers may have seen examples of her work at the Deming Arts Center, at the Hubbard Museum of the American West in Ruidoso, at the State Fair with blue ribbons attached, or on the cover of last summer’s Bootheel Magazine. Whatever the case, we’re going to be seeing a lot more of it in the future. Fine art photographer and eight-year Deming resident Diane Hudgens has always had an eye for visual composition, but didn’t become active in photography until she was given a camera by her future husband, Bob. That was six years ago, and Bob is a professional photographer with a career spanning 50 years.“ Bob is no slouch,” she confirms, “He’s a good teacher.” Speaking about the couple’s vocational passion, she adds, “Things just kept snowballing more and more every year, and now we’re going to have our own storefront. It’s been very interesting.” She and Bob will be opening their own photographic studio and gallery this spring. It will be the only shop of its kind in Deming, and will offer a full range of services including wedding, portrait and aerial photography, as well as antique photo restoration. Diane enjoys photography enough to work at some aspect of it every day. Even when she is not working, she always keeps a sharp eye out for photo opportunities in the Deming area. “The desert is beautiful,” she says, “if you look for it.” One of her preferred subjects is old windmills. Because her main interest is in quality composition, she likes to work in black and white. She admits, however, that “there are some color shots I can’t resist.” In her spare time, Diane also sits on the board of the Deming Arts Council. “Anyone who loves art would enjoy it,” she says of her duties there.

DJ Nelson HOTEL GENERAL MANAGER

Good news: Deming’s Holiday Inn has been named number one in customer satisfaction in New Mexico and ranks among the top 12% in the nation, according to polls taken of its guests. One of the reasons may well be its energetic general manager, DJ Nelson, who started working for the same hotel as a front desk clerk just four years ago. Though proud of the hotel’s accomplishments, however, DJ is quick to transfer credit to property owner Michael L. Shular, the Intercontinental Hotel Group and her loyal staff, some of whom have been with the hotel for 35 years. “Customer service has become a dying thing,” she says of the hospitality industry. “Personal one-on-one treatment is hard to find. At this hotel, we know our guests’ names. We even know the names of their pets!” With regards to the owner, she says simply, “I’m thankful he took a chance on me, and am blessed to be working for people who have given me the tools and freedom to do what needed to be done.” Those needs included a complete remodeling of the facility, completed in 2010. The hotel remained open during the entire renovation, and its approval ratings actually went up even while construction was taking place. Today, the hotel features a new courtyard, outdoor swimming pool and even a turnout area for guests’ horses. Workers recently installed new kitchen equipment in the hotel restaurant, the Lazy Lizard Bar & Grill. DJ has been known to wait tables there in a pinch, and still enjoys working at the front desk. She likes Deming because “It’s still a small town. You can go out to eat by yourself and end up getting a hug from a friend.” In what spare time she has, DJ is a volunteer firefighter and chairs the Deming Tourism Development Committee.

Deming Rocks!

a

A mineral collector’s paradise

ll of us have picked up a pretty rock and carried it home at some time in our lives. That’s just human nature. For some folks, however, it becomes a passion. And it’s no secret that the Deming area is a worldclass destination for avocational geologists, or ‘rockhounds,’ as they often refer to themselves. For one thing, Deming’s local ‘rock stars’ are usually approachable and quite willing to share their experience and expertise. Then too, there’s nearby Rockhound State Park. Established in 1966, it was the first park in the country to allow private collectors (no dealers, please) to remove up to 15 pounds of mineral specimens and semi-precious stones for their personal enjoyment. Specimens still waiting to be found include agate, jasper, obsidian, common opal, perlite and quartz crystals. Some of the multicolored agate and quartz specimens are found in the form of geodes and thunder eggs. Except for their shapes, these nodules appear quite common on the outside. When cut in half and polished, though, they can reveal a microcosm of beauty at their inner core. Amateur geologist Jim Hazelton is a member of the Friends of Rockhound State Park, a volunteer organization that helps to raise funds for the park. He explains that geodes and thunder eggs were volcanic lava bubbles that filled with liquefied minerals as they cooled. The difference between the two is that geodes have a hollow in the center, and thunder eggs are solid.

Thunder eggs are so-called because of legends that they were thrown down from the mountains by angry ancient gods amid fierce thunder and lightning storms. An active collector, Jim enjoys sharing his finds with friends but notes that his wife has first choice among them. He encourages everyone to visit Rockhound State Park, while adding a kindly but important word of caution for newcomers: “Dress properly. Don’t go rockhounding in flip-flops, a t-shirt and shorts. Wear sturdy shoes, long pants, long sleeves and a hat, and carry plenty of water.” Once specimens have been collected, they can be left in a raw state or ‘finished’ by cutting, polishing and mounting. That’s where the Deming Gem & Mineral Society, Inc. comes in. At its headquarters near the fairgrounds, the organization maintains a large lapidary shop where members can transform raw mineral specimens into unique display objects and jewelry. The Society, which has a nationwide membership, also sponsors an impressive annual gem and mineral show called the Rockhound Roundup, and

has done so for almost fifty years. The three-day event features displays, demonstrations, and guided field trips, along with mineral specimens, jewelry and lapidary equipment for sale. Admission is free to the public. Ted French, a career mineral collector, gold miner and owner of the Hillsboro (NM) Rock Shop, has been a vendor at the Rockhound Roundup for ten years. He has been to many other rockhound gatherings as well, but states flatly, “If you’re looking for anything having to do with rocks or rockhounding equipment, you have to come to this show.” In between annual shows, members of the Society also cut and polish thunder eggs and geodes for the fabulous display housed at the Deming Luna Mimbres Museum, located at 301 S. Silver in downtown Deming. One of Deming’s pleasant surprises, the museum contains a massive collection including everything from ancient Mimbres pottery to minerals to antique farm implements, and can take half a day or more to completely explore. Here, collectors who fancy geodes or thunder eggs but don’t want to work at finding or finishing them have another alternative: they can simply buy them, year ’round. above: A thunder egg displays its bold colors as it enters the final polishing stages at the Deming Gem & Mineral Society lapidary shop.

perated by the Deming Arts Council, the Deming Arts Center continues to offer monthly exhibits and receptions year-round. Executive Director Kathryn Hodson emphasizes that the events and exhibits are always open to the public and free of charge. “We want the people to know that we are here for them,” she says of the no-charge policy. The Center works with organizations and artists locally and around the state to create high-quality exhibits that are changed eleven times a year. Plans are already underway for 2012, when all work displayed will have a New Mexico theme, in honor of our state’s centennial. Exhibits in 2011 include the Deming Photo Club in January, Margot and Paul Hoylens in February, Youth Art in March, Railroad Centennial in April, New Mexico Watercolor Society in May, Luna County Show in June, Black Range Show in August, Luna County Art Teachers in September, Barbara Harrison in October, Four Ruidoso Artists in November, and the New Mexico Holiday Arts Festival in December. magine standing by the side of a road as a cabalgata, or cavalcade, of hundreds of horses and riders emerges from the distant Chihuahan Desert haze in a line that stretches as far as the eye can see down the two lane highway. There is no shooting or fighting among these riders from two nations, and no misbehavior among the horses, despite an inordinate amount of noise and distraction. Are these the ghosts of Pancho Villa and his Dorados, and the American soldiers who pursued them back into Mexico almost a century ago? Their appearances might cause one to wonder. They wear sombreros, leather leggings and military uniforms, and carry the weapons of our ancestors. Because it is early spring, the horses still wear their shaggy winter coats. Some weary caballeros have ridden daily for more than two weeks in order to reach this small town for their appointment with history. The date is March 12, 2011. Before dawn on March 9, 1916, mounted Mexican soldaderos commanded by General Pancho Villa attacked the town of Columbus, New Mexico, about four miles north of the border. Possible motives include guns, money and revenge against U.S. President Woodrow Wilson. In two and a half hours, 18 Americans and most of the invaders were killed. The bank was destroyed, but the vault unopened. In response, General John "Black Jack" Pershing and 4800 troops were ordered into Mexico to pursue the Villistas. That effort marked the first use of U.S. military aircraft in warfare, and included the use of engine-driven four wheel drive vehicles. Sadly, it was also the last mission of a horseback-mounted U.S. Cavalry. Today, a mounted cavalry of a different sort visits Columbus annually, near the anniversary date of the original raid. Instead of aggression, its mission is amistad friendship - between Mexico and the United States.

Animal Guardians

2011 marks the 20th anniversary of the Deming Animal Guardians (DAG), a homegrown, all-volunteer organization that makes a genuine difference in Luna County. The group helps to control our surplus pet population by assisting owners with the cost of spaying or neutering their animals. In addition to providing coupons for local veterinary services, DAG collaborates with the Santa Fe Animal Shelter to bring the mobile spay/neuter van to Luna County at least once a year. In these ways, DAG has spayed or neutered some 8400 animals since its inception. The organization also runs an emergency pet food bank to help pet owners without means keep their companion animals and a catch-neuter-release program for feral cats, distributes humane educational newspapers to the schools and helps pet owners with a wide variety of pet-related issues. All of this is not inexpensive, and the nonprofit organization is an aggressive fund-raiser. Since the staff is all-volunteer, administrative costs are extremely low. At the

same time, the commitment level among the volunteers is extremely high. “For many of us that volunteer for our animal friends, we're in it for life,” says co-founder and president Pat Danser. “Homeless and unwanted animals are always close to our hearts.” Much of the funding come comes from grants, the county, membership dues and private donations, but anyone can help - it’s as simple as saving those receipts from Pepper’s Supermarket. When you’ve accumulated a few, return them to the canister at the store’s customer service desk, and Pepper’s will donate a portion of the total directly to DAG. Pepper’s also helps the non-profit organization with discounts on pet food and supplies. “Deming Animal Guardians is a wonderful program and a service to the community,” says Pepper’s manager Mark Schultze. mmediately west of Deming and Luna county, neighboring Hidalgo County and the county seat of Lordsburg are located in what many consider to be the heart of Old West Country. The story of Lordsburg’s beginnings as a railroad, farming and mining town is well told by the exhibits and displays at the Lordsburg Hidalgo Museum. Just two miles to the south of town lies Shakespeare ghost town, once home to the likes of Billy the Kid, Curly Bill Brocius and Russian Bill. Southwest of Lordsburg near the Chiricahua Mountains is Rodeo, another historic community that has been gaining new popularity as an arts village in recent years. Presently, Rodeo is home to three galleries: the Chiricahua Gallery, the Rock Shop, and the Roger McKasson StudioGallery, a working studio owned by the noted painter and sculptor. Rodeo also offers restaurants, B & B’s, RV facilities and the Chiricahua Desert Museum. Hidalgo County is known for its outstanding wildlife photo opportunities, and particularly for its bird population. Species of birds found nowhere else in the United States live here, and the clear, starry night skies make it a great destination for amateur astronomers as well as birders and fans of western history.
