03 Construction Of Social Equity Basra waterfront renovation desgin

Basra in Iraq is located in the southern part of the country, adjacent to the Persian Gulf, and its geographical location is very important. However, despite its geographical advantages, there is a significant wealth gap in the social situation of the Basra region.

Year: July 2023 Theme: Spatial equity research and urban renewal design Group work: Zhu Shirui, Shen Zhuoyue, Qu Baiheng Location: Basra Role: advance the design(35%), modelling (50%), drafting(30%) and documentation (80%) The site is located in Basra, the most important city in southern Iraq. After years of war and reconstruction, the city is reopening. This project re-plans and redesigns the various functional areas of Dakeer Island, revitalizing it and providing an inclusive place for communication between different social classes.

The island's main functions planned in this project include: fish market, yacht club, tourist activity center, central square, restaurants, and leisure marina. The fish market, yacht club, and tourist activity center are located on both sides of the island, serving fishermen and wealthy businessmen, respectively.

Fishing is a traditional activity in Basra, but it is now fading. Through the redesign of the fish market, we hope to integrate fishing into a new vibrant open space. The redesigned fish market optimizes the integration of transportation, sales, processing, and living functions in ordinary fisheries.

At the same time, due to the city's special resource - oil, many wealthy businessmen come here for trade every year. Therefore, a yacht club and activity center for the wealthy class have emerged. Similarly, the design combines domes, arches, geometric patterns, and other elements. To strengthen the island's social responsibility, we designed the central square to connect and communicate between the poor and rich areas. When people walk and communicate in a unified and homogeneous large sheltered open space, everyone is equal.

A functional re-planning of the island of Dakeer with a harbour and public recreational spaces where traders, tourists, residents and fishermen from all walks of life can move and interact, thus building social equity.

In this design, we divided the site into three main functional areas and designed the corresponding flow lines for the corresponding groups of people.

Extracting Elements from Traditional Islamic Architecture

Scenarios for use in buildings with different functions

Summary We extracted four traditional Islamic architectural elements and abstracted them: balconies, arches, arcades, and walls, and applied them to our design. This not only allows the building to adapt to the local climate, but also to the history and context of the site. The last four small scenes depict people dining, repairing boats, chatting, and taking walks in the renovated building.

Most of the latest fish caught by local fishermen is used as a restaurant ingredient to provide more delicious food for local residents and tourists.

Forming an industrial chain with the fish market, the fish caught by fishermen is transported directly to the restaurant and the servants to taste.

The yacht club is divided into a high-end leisure area for tourist barges as well as a leisure and repair area for yacht repair and maintenance, as well as boat repairs for local fishermen, and is a meeting place for local residents and tourists.

Fish Market

Visitor Activity Center

Fishermen can immediately transport their catch to the shore for sale at the fish market, which is divided into two parts: the first is a high-end fish market with a supporting restaurant, where the fish can be processed on-site for visitors to enjoy on the spot; and the other is a fish stall constructed with wooden components, which is cheaper to sell and is mainly targeted at local residents.

In the design of the Visitor Activity Centre, arch elements from Islamic architecture were used. Meanwhile, the interior and exterior arcades were designed, and the floor was made of marble. With a domed roof, the building is presented in an elegant and holy manner.

People walking under this big dome will feel that the differences between people are dissolved.

COVID-19 is more severe in poorer areas

The histogram displays data by area poverty, which is the percent of residents below the federal poverty level (FPL) in the census tracts where the home addresses confirmed cases.

Covid-19 pandemic corrupted the ordinary pace of the world, leading to the most attention to the curve of epidemic cases. Behind such a tremendous loss of people’s lives, it also shows a severe inequality of regional medical services. Communities of minorities with low incomes are always facing more challenges. This inequality has been amplified during the pandemic. The exponential spreading of COVID-19 has created enormous pressure on the medicare systems in those communities. The situation has not been changed even after the exposure of effective treatment methods because of the high medical costs.

However, as one of the few cities in the US with many driverless vehicle tests and relative companies, Los Angeles shows a potential for urban automation against COVID-19. This project aims to maximize the possibilities of urban automation strategies, transferring the releasing spaces into quarantine spaces, medicare spaces, and supporting spaces, for the eventual equality of medicare in minority communities.

Assembly manual of autonomous anti-pandemic nodes The lack of medical resources and the untimely allocation of resources are the main causes of the outbreak. We try to use autonomous driving technology to quickly deploy resources.

Assemble skeletons and panels for driverless vehicles.

Align the internal grooves of the panel with the skeleton and fix it with expansion screws.

The crane at the transport destination hoistes the driverless vehicle to the specified location and forms a cluster according to the instructions, and the transport truck returns directly to the warehouse to wait for the next command to be issued.

Upon arrival at the harbor-style stop, the crane hoists the trolley through a magnetic suction cup to the designated location.

Once assembled, a crane will use suction cups to hoist the driverless vehicle onto the transport vehicle.

The transport vehicle will transport driverless vehicles with different functions to the designated location according to the demand, and there will be a harbor-style parking place at the transportation destination for convenient parking.
