The project Ritz-Carlton Hotel, is located within Changsa’s New Conference City, with close proximity to Liuyang River and waterfront promenade. The project aims to establish a 205-key urban resort. Considering the urban setting with restricted distant views, the design focuses on creating internal courtyards that serve as serene backdrops to the public spaces. The concept draws inspiration from the cultural and historical significance of the Liuyang River and the fabric of traditional Hunan villages.

The design draws inspiration from the cultural and historical memories of the Liuyang River deep into the centre of the site. Metaphorically cumulating a central waterscape feature that energizes the site to expand further into a series of intimate spaces and courtyards, just as the traditional Hunan villages did. Over the central waterscape, a series of walls slot and intersect one another, creating a variety of courtyard typologies that offers unique the hospitality experience to each space.
Each individual courtyard develops its own unique characteristics and identity, but all flow towards the central waterscape - a symbollic collection well of the property.
The two metaphorical lantern beacons float gracefully above the courtyards like silent guardians of the home in the night sky. The skin of the lanterns glows softly when the sun sets, their colours changing to every hues of the sky.

The COVID-19 pandemic has reshaped our relationship with urban spaces and buildings, emphasizing the role of the internet and prompting a reevaluation of their use. This has highlighted the contrast between residential needs and unused commercial structures.
The project also aims to enhance Melbourne’s public realm by integrating innovative designs into the urban landscape. Similarly, the traditional corporate office transforms to drive new urban lifestyles and work patterns, departing from conventional high-rise norms.
Rooted in thorough research and visionary design, this project navigates the intersection of architecture and societal shifts, leaving a lasting impact on the field.
