CONTENTS 01 LIFE EXPRESS PROJECT 04 POLARIZATION
03 ASYNCHRONOUS CULTURE GENERATOR 02 BLIND NEW WORLD

The project is finished in fall 2022. The location is chosen to be in Optics Valley, Wuhan, Hubei, China.

In today's society, while technology has advanced, it is not yet widely utilized in everyday life. Many manual workers still suffer from repetitive and tedious tasks. As demand increases, the labor force has begun to show a shortage trend.

To cope with this problem, the proposed logistics project aims to alleviate the burden on manual workers by using advanced technology to automate repetitive tasks, allowing them to focus on more technical roles.

The design includes a system of mechanical systems that will sort and transport materials, creating a transport chain from raw materials to final product output and waste management. Meanwhile, the needs of the local population can also be met.

Contemporary Workers: Trapped in the System

How should Machines steps in Human Life?

In 2016, the maximum time limit for 3 km delivery distance was 1 hour, while according to relevant data, in 2019, the average delivery time for a single order was 10 minutes less than three years ago.

The reduction of time in system is a reflection of the AI intelligence algorithm's deep learning capabilities. However, it can be crazy and deadly for the delivery men who implement it.

Riders can never indivisually fight against the time allocation by the system but only challenge the traffic rules to redeem the timeout. And the direct consequence is: a sharp rise in the number of traffic accidents suffered by delivery riders.

Repetitive work is numbing the spirit of young people

The change of the age is quietly taking away a lot of repetitive and ineffcient work.

Overtime caused by inefficiency suffers young people a lot. While, the young care more about spiritual values. For overtime, what young people care most about is not the physical fatigue, but whether the time they spent is meaningful.

"For example, to do a project, it's useless to simply work as long as possible. If 996 (a work schedule where employees are expected to work from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., six days a week, associated with a culture of overwork in certain industries, particularly in China) is only used to do such repetitive labor as organizing information, sitting in the office to slack off, work overtime only for waitting for the team leader to go first. It is completely meaningless. I want to do the work that reflects my value."

Raw materials are transported and processed into finished products through a system of components.

Cargo transportation Routes

The cargo is first sorted at the main transportation core in the office area and then distributed horizontally to other accessory cores via tracks. Next, it is transported vertically to various functional areas through different cores. Finally, all of the cargos will achieve all parts of the building via the rails on each floor.

Cargo Import

Express Import

The architecture is located on the main road and adjacent to two communities, separated from a primary school by a secondary road.

To manage logistics without interfering with other activities on site, the part facing the road receives deliveries from couriers, while largescale cargo imports from the logistics entrance on the west side.

The main body of the building is also located on the west side, away from the road, providing logistics personnel with a quiet working environment. On the contrary, the part of the building near the street is designed for open functions that serve the public.

About Plan&Function

The architecture takes the logistics core in office area as the main logistics processing component, and divide into other cores with different functions, the plan is spread around the different cores to meet the related functional demands. Meanwhile, the cores are connected to each other smoothly by horizontal plane trackes and vertical tubes, and create some new functional areas.

BLIND NEW WORLD

Adopting the storyline of the science fiction Brave New World, this installation established a multi-player theatrelike hybrid immersive interactive environment with colorful customized and personalized devices to enable everyone in the same environment to achieve diverse and unique multi-modal information.

By shaping different perspectives of different players in the same space, we try to discuss a model of advanced scientific society: a society that artificially shapes origins, physical qualities and values, allowing people to calm their emotions and develop according to the rational rules and programming of the society. Does the nature of such a society get stable prosperity or does it deprive people of the right to experience pain?

Programming life through technology: A protection for citizens or A deprivation of experience?

Circular self-consistent world

The circle shows to be centripetal and is heterogeneous with the orthogonal system of the site. It is able to involve the viewer into it and make it difficult to escape, forming an independent introverted world.

Equipped with color filter glasses High dependency on SOMA

Everyone in the world wears filter glasses when building the world, causing their selectively perception of the outside world. This is also in line with the original setting, that the content of each social class perception of society is designed.

Site & Construction

The project is located within an orthogonal system defined by a column grid, which is divided into a nine-box grid with a hollowedout middle box creating a vertical space. The structure is located on the northernmost side of the site and partially extends into the open space.

v A SOMA cures all.

Place Castes Bubble® on the terminal to receive your SOMA allotment for the day's work. Every citizen who completes his or her work has sufficient authority to be happy. Although every New World citizen can feel satisfied and happy just by working, occasionally life can give us little shocks and make our emotions fluctuate a little. Brave New World has taken these into account and will offer a "little jelly bean" called SOMA. When feeling negative emotions, just take one and all the tension and anxiety will disappear, without any cost or side effects.

iv Fulfilling the obligations of a New citizen

Do our bit to the New World is the way for every citizen to realize his personal value, and you will definitely feel great satisfaction and joy by working diligently in working zone! The manual has been projected on the work panel in front of you, and Castes Bubble® will assist and remember your work. Please have fun after finishing your work!

Space Form Design

i Heterogeneity and Opposition

The curved form of the construction is different from the square orthogonal system of the site, causing a contrasting tension with it, indicating the antagonistic relationship between the World State and Savage Reservation. When viewers get involved in, they may find it hard to escape, experiencing a sense of immersion away from the outside world.

ii Addiction and Awakening

The entrances and exits along the perimeter of the building are limited by guide walls to build a buffer sequence, and the entrances and exits are hidden to give way to the independence of the world.

Entry: Veiwers enter the new world by mistake from the "SAVAGE" perspective;

Exit: The new world collapses or the independent consciousness awakens.

iii Dualistic Society

Life=Workaholics+Hedonist

Working Zone: Because of the filteration, everyone thinks that they take on the most important work and contribute the most. They are of course proud of it.

Gamma: Technical Work

Entertaining Zone: SOMA dependence and instant feedback. When pressing a button, the effects on the screen become pleasant and iridescent.

Asynchronous Culture Generator

The project is located in the Hufangqiao area in the old town of Beijing. According to Beijing's urban planning policy, the site is currently facing the problem of demolition and renovation of dilapidated buildings and functional renewal. The design seeks to reactivate this area, which has already lost its former vitality, according to the location of the lot in Beijing city, its historical heritage and industrial needs.

This project extend the tradition of the site as a concentration of marketplace entertainment and culture according to economic and cultural needs, and reintegrate new industrial content and structure by combining the industrial operation mode and cultural and entertainment preferences of modern society.

Meanwhile, in order to respond to the needs of the citizens and to harmonize the new building with the old one, the building adopts the form of green slope to create a public green space, with small volume houses placed at low elevation and large volume buildings erected at high elevation to separate the two.

Urban Complex Design Group Work | Spring 2021

Problems on Site

The area used to assume the function of marketplace entertainment and culture of the old Beijing city, and industries such as Beijing opera and acrobatics were scattered on site. However, it faces the problem of culture extinction as time flies. Meanwhile, along with cultural heritage problems, the infrastructure on site becomes worn-out. In addition, as the project is located in core area of Beijing, the capital city, poblems of immature industrial structure and declining economy has also to be fixed.

Experimental theater monomer

The experimental theater monomer is located at the end of the sunken street, the square.

Theaters, including outdoor theater, small stage-movable theater, mian experimental theater, are on the ground floor and the first floor, while other supporting function such as stores, offices, and rehearsal rooms, are in the higher box, which offer staffs and performers places to produce, publicize, perform their works, thus compose a tiny drama industry.

Between two parts of the monomer is the grass layer, where the public can enjoy outside green environment on meandering slopes. The green corrider goes throughout the whole site, links north and south two parts of the site.

POLARIZATION

The project is located beside an planned axis in the east part of Tsinghua University. The building is designed to provide a place for students from different majors cooperating with each other to get inspirations and create innovative works.

In this work, the prototype "courtyard origin", which is a kind of space helping users focus, is refered to. Besides the rectangular prototye, the project introduce the circular space, which means stronger power of concentration, trying to regard prototypes as symbols of the logic of gathering and distribution.

History of the Site

The site is located besides the main axis of the "White Area" in Campus Planning, on which most important architectures, including the main building and the gymnasium, are also located.

Prototype Units

Elements around the Site

The rhythm of the axis area

The area along the axis is a typical Moscow University campus plan, forming a rhythmic sequence about the volume on the plan along the central axis: void - solid - voidsolid... According to the rhythm, the site place should be solid.

The spatial form around the site

The Buildings around the site have a uniform formal character. All of them adhere to clear boundaries and at the same time take the elements of square and circle. Meanwhile, the west building No.6 Classroom Building and the east building Department of Engineering Physics take the form of semi-open Courtyard Origin, which indicates the directionality of space through opening. The building symmetrical to the site opens to the east.

People who are curious and come to visit the exhibition. They usually observe others through skylight.

Creators

Users of this architecture, they stay in individual spaces and are immersed in creating, may be crazy occasionally.

People & Section Operations

The prototype "courtyard" could be an original space of monastery. The form is designed to meet the necessary demands of dormitory and dinning, so that apprentices can focus on their disciplines. After centuries, the prototype is adapted to college buildings.

He/She is just a passerby A wandering on slope. Or you can also call him or her passerby B or passerby C.

Professors, staffs, who organize group activities, such as lectures, courses, in auditorium-like space.

Main Modules Manual - The Composition

The logic of operation on section can be interpreted to be a kind of power acting on floors. The vertical power makes floors form different prototyes for diverse functions. The power can be executed in a circle area and form different units which will be mentioned on the right side. The units for kinds of users can be organized in a planar logic to compose the project.

1 Omniscient Shrine

Thick tabletop moldings, with books hidden inside by hollowing out niches. It penetrate all floors and introduced natural light into the underground, sacred and solemn.

2 Underground Passage

The entrance directly towards underground spaces. Sometimes exhibition can be held in the glass room on the ground. The auditorium-like stairs can be a position to rest and appreciate sceneries.

It penetrates the slope on exhibition hall and introduce fresh light and air into modules that penetrate the gray space. The light it introduces rules the entire gray space and creates interoperability of sight lines.

Endless ramps, multiple "La Chapelle de Ronchamp" openings and access platforms - the whole space is experiential, collage and dizzying.

5

A massive, eccentric, inverted frustum of a cone, supporting the slope and forming the facade. As the main entrance and lecture hall on the east side, it assumes the function of an "ancient Greek theater".

The quadrangular courtyard encloses an area which limit people's activity. However, thereis no clear direction in this range.

Since circular prototye has clear centrality, if circles are put in a quadrangular courtyard as another kind of courtyard, they will generate stronger force towards centers.

Compared the situation that people spread evenly in the quadrangular courtyard, the crowds will move and concentrate in assigned circular courtyards.

So what if I regard "square" and "circle" courtyard as logical symbols of distribution and concentration respectively?

PLAN Generation - Attention Demands Sorting

Concentration Weak Connection Repulsive Force

Surface Layer - Breaking Homogenization

Rank of attention (from highest to lowest): Library - Auditorium Exhibition

The top layer exposed to outside. Students get relaxed and keep moving with wandering attention here.

The most important three modules are decided in this layer. The three units are organized by the ring, which emphasis the centremost circular area.

Middle Layer - Weaken the Connection

Bottom Layer - Strongly Differentiated

Middle Layer. Users getting underground gradually find their destinations. Meanwhile higher attention demands are proposed. The three modules generate three anti-arc areas which are weakly connected. The deepest layer where users work with the highest attention. Active and silent area are divided clearly. Three repulsive points are set to be traffic cores, generating new three anti-arc areas, which are most concentrated areas in the building.
