A Touchable House Touchable Site

This principle of windows eliminates the directionality of the house itself, allowing the house to open at any directiton.

This provides a fragmented landscape and hints people to come out and touch the nature.

The site was chosen in a forest in Tonglu, Zhejiang Province, China, as a home designed for a couple. Because of the Covid19, all over the world have experienced a long quarantine since 2020. Though it is a hard time, but we do have time, space and privacy to think how should life be. The usual fast lifestyle in the city and the anxious urban rhythm have been thought about during the isolation period. Living in the forest in the Post-Corona time provides us with the opportunity to touch nature. Living in nature gives us with a alternative comfortable homeoffice place, and it can also be used as a meeting area for friends in the open space of the house.

As the word "touch" in the relationship between people, it means that there is some kind of kindness with a subtle distance. It is not like a tight hug but like a sense of peace within reach. The private space of the project is compressed and replaced by open spaces and openness of sight. The large floor height provides the need for sight communication in the vertical direction. BACKGROUND The task is to reorganize and supplement the Heide Cemetery in Dresden, including new areas and buildings for the different mourning cultures of the world religions as well as the nonreligious burial ceremonies including funeral and farewell halls.

In addition, a new crematorium is to be built in this cemetery.

TYPOLOGY The floor plan layout is square, rotated 45 degrees, on the axis.

The floor plan is in general symmetrical. In the middle of all 4 sides there is a corridor to the middle plaza. The entrance is in the corner of the square. The building is underground with a sloping roof over it. The roof is covered with reeds and some holes on it are as skylight. This reed material is integrated in nature. The geometrical center of the chimney is not diagonal, but slightly off-center.

CONCEPTS The starting point of the concept is Etruscan Tumuli. They are housed in round burial mounds (tumuli) made of earth and stones. This ancient grave module offers a city of the dead with an entrance area, plaza and house. This grave module is also religiously neutral and easily accepted by people with all religious backgrounds. `

CIRCULATION The main entrance for visitors is at the end of the memorial axis, and the building is rotated 45 degrees. The entrance path offers direct entrances to the central plaza and further to the funeral hall and crematorium. The service functions are located on the outer edge of the building, and it offers 4 symmetrical service entrances. The coffin is delivered from here to the funeral hall and crematorium. Most of the functions are on the 1st basement floor. Part of the Service zone of the crematorium is on the 2nd basement floor.

MATERIALITY Concrete, reeds and wood are used. The walls and floor are made of concrete. The structure, doors, window frames and inner facade are mostly made of wood. The outer cladding of the roof is made of reeds. With such a combination, the structure can be relatively natural and massive. The main lighting is through the courtyard and small openings on the roof.

ANALOGY This building is a combination of residence and atelier with a relatively large amount of privacy. The analogy to the arch and the comparatively small opening area in the facade, show the use of the building in the urban space. A different environment is embodied in the interior facade.

The view impresses with its massive depth, which is created on the one hand by the deep windows in the reveals and on the other hand by the overall depth of the building. The great depth also means that something is happening inside.

TYPOLOGY In view of the principle of lighting and external facades, the typology of the courtyard house and the surrounding views are decisive for the overall concept. The inner facade contains two levels. The facade, which is directly connected to the courtyard, opens directly onto the inner courtyard and can receive intense lighting. The exterior facade of the building is relatively closed. The hallway and the platform on the first floor contain two layers. Such two front and rear facades have a certain perspective complexity. When treating the courtyard, there are several important spatial nodes: stairwell, dining room, winter garden, reception room, exhibition room, which have access to the courtyard.

The principles of the floor plan and the facade are basically symmetrical and geometric. The floor plan and the facade of the residential area are basically symmetrical. The bedroom, dining room and living room with round and square floor plan occupy several central positions, which are separated by side rooms with an aspect ratio of 1: 2. The plan of the residence is geometrically balanced. Important spaces: the reception room, the coffee and the exhibition are in two geometric shapes (circular and rectangular) at the ends of the long axis and the center is separated by office space.

Master plan The project is on the corner of Heidelberger Street and directly opposite the Prinz-Emil-Garten. Heidelberger Street opens up the adjacent quarters in the Bessunger Street area and connects the districts of Eberstadt, Lincoln-Siedlung and Bessungen with the city center. The location on one of the main access roads to Darmstadt ensures good frequentation and is suitable for representative use.

Around the site is mainly residential. In order to avoid visual and noise disturbance with the surrounding existing buildings, and at the same time around the site as a presentation window.

RETHINKING Complexity and contradiction are mixed up in Berlin. This reconstruction project is intended to bring the historic city center back to the pre-war state. However, the city is dynamic, constantly changing and constantly evolving in the future. The city and buildings should be understood as an adaptive system that can constantly react quickly to changes in the environment.

The basis for the change is the original Schinkel's Bauakademie. Schinkel integrates the existing Neuwache, Altes Museum, the Old Church, the City Palace and the Friedrichswerder Church into a rectangular group of buildings. He treated the old town and the complex as a whole urban landscape. The original building has a high degree of flexibility, it does not have a strong directional effect and therefore has a lot of freedom in all directions. The new building therefore requires the old building academy to be respected to a certain extent in terms of spatial organization and proportion.

Lots of Schinkel The project adopted the cubature, the proportions of the facade, the inner courtyard, the relationship between the wall and the opening, the type of entrance, the uniform basic grid and the floor heights. The level part adopts the original access logic: organize the space around the atrium.

The atrium extends over 4 floors and the air space is adjusted to each floor to introduce soft light and to simulate the original courtyard.

TRANSPARENCY The new building stands for openness and transparency. The new building academy offers a relatively large number of large rooms and can be used flexibly. The facade of the new building academy is simplified and shows a transparent clarity. In the atrium, all floors are connected horizontally and vertically.

FUNCTIONAL MIXTURE The functional mix is very likely to happen in future buildings. The project does not explicitly define the function, but classifies the function from bottom to top and presents possible usage scenarios. Mix of two or more of the presentation, exhibition, catering, work, collaboration, office are mixed and arranged from the floor of the building up to the height in a public-private order.

STRUCTURE The new building academy simulates the old structure and translated it with modern material language. The structure is transformed into a contemporary form using material-neutral concrete. The development of the universal space is based on the need for use.

CONTEXT The project is a workshop for Haus Kump, an educational institution on the outskirts of the southwestern Minster. The house Kump consists of 4 houses, which are surrounded by an inner courtyard with two entrances to the north and south. The HBZ Academy for Design was founded in 1991 with the aim of strengthening the skills of the craft in the field of design and shaping and promoting public relations for the creative craft. In 2013, the academy expanded its position as a competence center for design and media transfer to Haus Kump. Architectural styles of the 4 houses are different but the buildings are of similar dimensions and brick, wood, glass are used everywhere. Nowadays, more rooms are needed than an extension of the workshop area, and the needs of multifunctional use are also increasing.

The project is located in the courtyard of Haus Kump and offers students an outdoor manufacturing facility. At the same time, it can be used for various purposes, such as a craft market or an outdoor exhibition stand.

FLOATING BOARD The project uses a mixed steel and wood structure. The roof structure consists of wooden elements that are clad with perforated aluminum panels. The main pillars are made of steel with a circular cross-section.

The project emphasizes horizontally all the lines, forming three horizontal lines of varying thickness, all of which are woody and strong. In order to emphasize the horizontality, very narrow and highly reflective steel columns are used, so that the vertical direction is reduced as much as possible. Eventually the effect of floating board is formed.`
