Site:ZhengZhou, China 2019.4

The site chosen is at the bottom of an alarmingly steep mountain ridge, led by an almost perilous path trodden with bated breath. The path, joined to the stone steps of Monesteroli by the reconstruction of an old abandoned one, passes through the village and its terraces, the mediterranean macchia bushes, the rough sedimentary rocks, and finally reaches the end of the land. The choice is made to maximize the pathway experience and to enhance the connection between the land and marine life. For what it serves, we proposed at first a shelter with basic accomodation and a public patio with mooring covered by a canopy, accessed both from the land by foot and the sea by yachts. A brazier-lighthouse on the hillside above them is added later.

The concept has almost come into being straight away in some preliminary sketches we made during our visit on the site: a solid bunker resembling the rocky character, and a light yacht-like canopy resembling the windy one, with different localizing conditions and structural expression. The bunker is a massive concrete construction sitting inside the concave bay, solid enough to withstand extreme weathers, while the patio is mostly floating around the convex end of the mountain ridge, with its canopy realized by the application of compression and tension members, possible to assmble and disassemble according to different seasons.

2020.6

This project is a project for senior students, and it is a large-span school gymnasium design. Considering the low height and small-scale texture of the campus, the gymnasium and activity center are divided into two volumes and placed in the base. At the same time, the continuity of the building is ensured through the connection between the corridor and the roof.
