Healing Center for Children with Congenital Autism

Individual work Date: 2/2023-5/2023 Site: Allhies Ireland Advisor: John Latto The design theme of the project is to build a care center for autistic children. The central theme of the project design is to help autistic children form multiple connections with society by exploring multiple modes of education and interaction from the perspective of caring for children with congenital autism. In order to help the autistic group to be accepted by society, I try to integrate the needs and perspectives of autistic children and ordinary people in the building.

While helping the autistic children to get a more suitable environment to grow up in, I also project the cognitive dissonance of the society towards the autistic community into the corners of this building, so that they can get the experience of participating in the activities in the building, and the non-autistic people can get a fuller knowledge and understanding of the autistic people and their behaviours.

I visualize the building as a "rabbit hole" that connects "Wonderland" and "Earth", and we travel through the hole to protect the "Wonderland" of the autistic children and at the same time teach them how to recognize the "Earth".

Project Design Methodology Using modern medical and psychological research as a guide, we combine the need for necessity with the need for diversity, and design in a way that balances multiple special needs.

Project Construction Purpose

The rabbit hole represents a doorway between two different worlds, one representing reality, the world we live in, and the other representing fantasy and virtual, which I wanted to compare to the world autistic children aspire to. The project is located in the small town of allhiles in Ireland, which is rich in history and culture, so I wanted to combine the poetry of this fairyland-like dream with the unique atmosphere of this place.

Autism is a congenital neurodevelopmental disorder that causes symptoms that are different from those of ordinary people. These symptoms are often accompanied by emotional instability, insecurity, sensitivity, agitation, and many other conditions.

However, these individuals with autism are also often able to demonstrate excellent concentration and creativity in a variety of areas, so children with autism have a very specific need for space. In my project, I will use elements of modern medicine and modern psychology in conjunction with the composition of architectural spaces to provide protection and support for children with autism.

Provide a place with physical and psychological protection for children with autism. and help them develop their talents while teaching them essential survival skills.

Congenital autism as a form of neurodevelopmental disorder presents with a variety of symptoms in children, which can be summarized in eight main conditions 1. Social difficulties: difficulty showing interest in communication or ....understanding cues 2. Repetitive behaviors: Repetitive stereotypical behaviors to relieve ....anxiety 3. Communication difficulties: need to rely on other means of ....communication 4. Sensory sensitivity: Children with autism may have increased or ....decreased sensitivity to sensory stimuli.

5. restricted interests: Children with autism often have strong and ....narrow interests in specific topics 6. Difficulty with transitions: Changes in daily life or transitions can ....be challenging for children with autism.

7. Emotional regulation problems: Children with autism may have ....difficulty regulating their emotions.

8. Unusual movements: These behaviors are often self-stimulating ....(called "stimuli") and can be used as a way to self-soothe or ....regulate sensory input.

I was mainly responsible for the digital model construction and conceptual model derivation in this project, and I worked with other members to complete the design and assembly of the physical model.

The movement patterns of the façade arrays and the generation of the final digital model and the expression of the effect were all done independently by myself.

The residential building in Allihes needed to be renovated and refurbished due to the aging of the building. We renovated the façade of the building according to the local natural conditions and building needs, and realized the self-sufficiency of the building energy and the adjustment of wind direction and air humidity.

Creeper moss is a fungus; that displays intelligent traits similar to smart single-celled organisms. According to the experiment done by Japanese researchers, it can find the shortest way inside a maze through unconsciousness self-selection. Inspired by this behaviour, we hope to use the self-selection algorithm to design a facade that can adapt to the environment automatically.

Disadvantage: The wind condition in Allihies is complex, in horizental level may hard to control the wind effectively.

Strategy2：follow the wind direction and the wind speed to control the inner nature ventilation. Let the facade move perpendicular to the wall to affact the wind enters.

According to the prevailing wind direction of Ireland, the orthogonal orientation can only ensure the windward facade gain enough wind, whereas other 3 sides nearly cannot gain wind at all, which not maximizes the use of wind energy.

In the windy allihies, the façade can undulate backwards and forwards in response to demand, just like the undulating waves of the sea, creating a more comfortable living environment.

But with the dramatic changes of the 21st century, Ireland has moved from a conservative Catholic country to one of tolerance and openness, and with it, many issues of modernity.

Contemporary Ireland, acceptance and rejection of modernity Ireland today has undergone a dramatic transformation, from a conservative Catholic country to a modern nation that allows gay marriage in just a few decades. This is due in no small part to Joyce's renewal of Irish nationalism and his pioneering of modernity.But with it came a series of problems of modernity for the country. Afar, in eastern Ethiopia, has been a nomadic community for generations. During the rainy and dry seasons of the year, the people leave the arid desert to move inland into the rain forest. This water-and-grass lifestyle has created a very different way of life from modern society.

In order to help local residents better adapt to climate and environmental changes on the way of migration, we try to integrate and transform their social structure and settlement type according to the composition form of their settlements, and further improve the construction methods of buildings according to different construction materials adapted to different environments.

In the design process, we mainly adopted the virtual engine (UE5) to use the random combination of unit modules, and by adding restrictions, we can generate settlements that meet specific needs under different random conditions.

Transformation of abandoned villages

Individual work Date: 2/2022-5/2022 Site: Shengshan island Zhejiang Advisor: Mark Tholen T he pro ject seeks to trans f orm an abandoned Bay Area village to rejuvenate its socio-economic vitality by enhancing its cultural radiance.

The concept of the project is based on the image of a whale falling to the bottom of the ocean after its death and using its carcass to nourish the growth of more organisms. I used the abandoned village as a framework, introduced modern cultural facilities, and connected the buildings with wooden structures to create a flexible functional space that can be used according to the seasons and fishing seasons.

Individual participation: I was mainly involved in the design of the building and its surroundings, including the layout of various types of transportation around the building and the connectivity of the building with the surrounding environment, including the design of the west side of the museum and its main entrance connected to the renovation of the pedestrian high line, as well as the planning of the waterfront space.

In the design I mainly considered how the surrounding transportation environment interacts with the building itself, and how to integrate the overall planning of the area into the urban fabric of Shanghai in a way that ensures overall aesthetic harmony.
