1932 OLYMPICS The 1932 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the X Olympiad, was a major worldwide multi-athletic event, which was celebrated in 1932 in Los Angeles, California, United States.

No other cities made a bid to host these Olympics. Held during the worldwide Great Depression, many nations and athletes were unable to pay for the trip to Los Angeles. Fewer than half the participants of the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam returned to compete in 1932. Even U.S. President Herbert Hoover skipped the event.

The organizing committee put no record of the finances of the Games in their report, though contemporary newspapers reported that the Games had made a profit of US$1,000,000.

OLYMPIC VENUES In order to control cost in the wake of the Great Depression, existing venues were used. They included two golf courses, two city parks, three public highways, and a city road.

Takeichi Nishi (Baron Nishi) was the gold medalist with his horse Uranus in the equestrian show jumping individual event. Nishi's gold medal is Japan's only gold medal in the equestrian event to this day.

Didrikson was an athlete who paved the way for generations of women to come and is known for breaking accepted models of femininity in her time. She was most successful in golf, basketball, track and ďŹ eld and won a gold medal in the 1932 Olympics. Didrikson participated in three PGA (Professional Golf Association) tournaments and was the ďŹ rst and only woman in history to make the cut in a PGA Tour event.

PART II 2004 ATHENS OLYMPICS

The first modern Olympics were opened in the ancient city of Athens on Greek Independence Day in 1896. Ancient Greece was the birthplace of the Olympic Games, so Athens was considered to be an appropriate choice to stage the first modern Games. It was unanimously chosen as the host city.

In 2004, the games returned to their birthplace, for the XXVIII Olympiad.

“Nowhere in the world is the heart and heritage of a people more bound together with the Olympic Games.�

The olympics bid to host the 2004 Olympiad emphasized the importance of the olympics in the Greek history, over that of other nations.

The bid had a projected $1.7 billion operating cost, with the Greek goverment being the sponser.

INFRASTRUCTURE AND URBAN PLANNING The bid for the 2004 games included the building and widening of many roads throughout Athens, a new portion of the underground subway lines as well as the introduction to a new international airport. The idea was the improvements made to the transportation infrastructure would continue for years following the games.

WHAT HAPPENED AFTER THE ATHLETES WENT HOME? Following the games in Athens, most of the newly built sporting facilities became abandoned, forgotten in time just a few years following the games.

“Until 2004, a large section of Greek society floated on a cloud of artificial euphoria. Polished Jeeps lined the streets of Greek Provinces, and Havana cigars became popular among Greek men with easy access to credit cards and endless loans.

At that point, banks were handing out money to anyone, even if you were just going to use it to book a holiday. Thanks to this, the Greek banking system methodically inflated its own bubble, which in turn led to bubbles in construction, media, tourism, and elsewhere. This, in turn, sparked an explosive rise within the Greek stock market, which devolved into an even more explosive crash.

Warning signs were already emerging in 2004 when Greece won UEFA Euro 2004 and played host to the Olympic Games, but, as we all know too well, after the binge comes the hangover. The private debt of Greeks became unsustainable, banks demanded their money back, many had lost a fortune in the stock market, and public finances were going from bad to worse. Blame was exchanged between rival political parties as unemployment began to slowly rise.�
