This year’s Hostry Festival sees more newly commissioned Norfolk projects than ever before.

Our new Festival Satellite Events with the UEA, The Ten Group, City College, Norwich School, both Cathedrals, The Assembly House, and The Maddermarket Theatre, all serve to increase our offer to you in stunning venues around the city.

Be sure to vote in the EDP People’s Choice Award, your chance to nominate your favourite artist, organisation or project for The Norfolk Arts Awards 2014. Join a cast of 15 actors in our Main House Play for a joyous week of Restoration Comedy, The Country Wife by William Wycherley. On a personal note, festival Director Of Productions Peter Beck and I have recently been appointed Joint Creative Directors of the Maddermarket Theatre in Norwich. Many of the Maddermarket volunteers have been working with us over the last four years at the festival.

Both projects share very similar ideals and we are enormously proud to be the new points of contact at one of Norfolk’s much admired landmark theatres.

There is such an array of people to thank as always, neither my creative partner Stash Kirkbride nor I can possibly aim to do so in these few short lines. But, what I will say is this: The endless enthusiasm and immediacy with which people have joined the Hostry Festival since 2010 has been a constant inspiration to me. I get to hear first hand of another deal made, a further partnership agreed, an In Kind exchange, all of which seem to lift the project above the clouds.

So, let me say a huge thank you to all who have given their time, energy, vision, talent, financial support and good humour so far.

James Colman, Will Buckley and The PBSK Partnership present a new annual Hostry Festival commission in association with Broadland Wineries

Artists are encouraged to use their choice of art media and to select any vantage point at the six historic Norwich locations. The paintings will be exhibited at The Hostry, Norwich Cathedral, and judged by a panel of experts. They will select one painting from each artist to enter into an auction hosted by TW Gaze of Diss, where ticket holders will have the chance to bid for the first ever Paint Out Norwich paintings. In addition, prizes will be awarded on the Gala Launch Night and Auction on 23rd October. The People’s Choice Award will be announced in the Eastern Daily Press on Monday 3rd November.

‘Paint Out’ Norwich aims to attract national and international talent by introducing an event that focuses on the challenges imposed by painting ‘on the spot’ in the urban environment.

The Festival organisers are keen to see a competition that tests artists’ skill and craft to the maximum, promoting the burgeoning Norwich arts scene, and providing an interactive educational experience.

Members of the public are invited to follow the artists over the two day period using the trail map of the locations below – a unique chance to observe these talented artists at work.

Celebrating Plein Air visual arts at The Hostry Festival 2014 The 2014 Hostry Festival will be staging the first ever ‘Paint Out’ Norwich, a unique outdoor event at which up to 20 selected artists will paint En Plein Air at some of Norwich’s finest historic landmarks, over two days.

Welcome to The Norfolk Arts Awards 2014, now in its third year and already a staple of the arts events calendar in the county. What a year it has been, with fantastic projects, performances and events from both long-established and emerging artists alike. We’ve seen work in theatres, galleries, artists studios, libraries, community halls, in schools, in the open air, in unusual site-specific locations and more. There is an abundance of creativity happening in Norfolk.

The antidote to the X Factor – no judges, no winners or losers.

Debut is a celebration of the creative voice of young people from Norfolk aged 13-19, shared through music and spoken word.

At the start of 2014 The Hostry Festival embarked on a journey to discover young emerging writers of all styles, songwriters to poets, short story writers to scriptwriters. Through tailored mentoring, the project supports the development of artistic talent, as well as closing the gap between writing and audience engagement.

These young writers will share with you, the audience, their creativity and talent in the Debut showcase. Come join us to celebrate the voices of local young people.

Echoes of Change Music Frank Bridge String Sextet Frank Bridge Lament for Strings Elgar String Quartet Directed by SIMON SMITH Spoken Word read by Peter Barrow Harriet Waterhouse David Banks Chamber Orchestra Anglia returns to the Hostry Festival this year under the direction of the internationally renowned violinist Simon Smith, presenting a programme commemorating the Great War. A concert of both music and the spoken word captures the mood of change in society before, during and after the cataclysmic events of the Great War. Both the music and the spoken word are romantic and sombre. One piece of music was composed in memory of the death of a young girl on the Lusitania. The concert finishes with the Elgar Quartet, a work written at the end of the Great War, expressing both regret and sadness but with no hint of brutality. It is a moving tribute, set in the extraordinary surroundings of the Hostry building.

Father and Son, Son and Father by Canon Neville Boundy is a series of conversations between Jesus and God. The play has enjoyed huge success in churches and cathedrals across the UK, with casts that have included Sam and Timothy West, Paul McGann and Peter Copley, and Norfolk’s Chris and Peter Ellis.

Don’t miss the opportunity to witness this staged reading in the extraordinary surroundings of two of the city’s finest and most uplifting landmark buildings.

The Country Wife is a hilarious bawdy Restoration Comedy that pokes fun at the humourless, the jealous, and the adventurous alike. It features a country wife, whose husband believes she is too naïve to cuckold him, and an anti-hero, Horner, who pretends to be impotent in order to have unrestrained access to women. A number of licentious and hypocritical women demand Horner’s services – the country wife among them.

The Country Wife was first performed in 1675 by the King’s Company. It is currently enjoying a period of revivals with productions being staged across Europe, such is the popularity of the work amongst theatre-goers and scholars alike. LIVING WITH DEMENTIA

Disappearing Friends Starring mel sessions, peter sessions, tracie harris and Joe nemeth Directed by tom o’sullivan Written by Hamilton Wilson This new commission supports the current campaigns raising public awareness about dementia.

In four short moving scenes, based on real life stories, we enter the life of a mother recently diagnosed with dementia, showing the problems that she and her family must face, and the warmth and uplift that develop between them.

Each scene is followed by professionals explaining the particular points that are being illustrated.

The final part will be a discussion with the audience about the biomedical processes that cause dementia, and the ethical and social issues arising from it.

He is a Lecturer in Occupational Therapy at UEA. The Unselfish Spirit: Human Evolution in a Time of Global Crisis explores our human potential and how we can engage our consciousness and behaviours to address the challenges that threaten life on Earth.

PATRICK BARKHAM

was born in 1975 in Norfolk and educated at Cambridge University. He is a features writer for the Guardian where he has reported on everything from the Iraq War to climate change. He works in London, but spends as much time as he can in North Norfolk. He is the author of The Butterfly Isles (2010) and Badgerlands (2013), which were both shortlisted for the Royal Society of Literature Ondaatje Prize.

HENRY SUTTON

is the author of nine novels, including Get Me Out Of Here and Kids’ Stuff.

My Criminal World is his most recent book. He is also the author of a collection of short stories, Thong Nation. He has been the Literary Editor of Esquire Magazine and the Books Editor of The Daily Mirror. He is now Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing at UEA and living in Norwich.

Rachel Hore

worked in London publishing for many years before moving to Norwich with her husband, the writer DJ Taylor, and their three sons.

She now teaches Publishing at UEA. Her previous novels are The Dream House, The Memory Garden, The Glass Painter’s Daughter, which was shortlisted for the 2010 Romantic Novel of the Year award, A Place of Secrets, which was picked by Richard and Judy for their book club, and the latest Sunday Times bestseller A Gathering Storm.

These are placed in the ‘Too Difficult Box’, a park for all the unpopular subjects that governments and their civil servants don’t want to confront.

In The Too Difficult Box, Charles Clarke brings together a cast of heavy hitters from the worlds of politics, academia and public service, including Anthony Giddens, Hayden Phillips, John Hutton, Shirley Williams, Richard Dannatt, Vince Cable, Margaret Hodge, Trevor Phillips, Patricia Hewitt and David Blunkett, to write expansively and persuasively on important topics too often kicked into the long grass because of their insolubility, such as immigration, welfare reform, drug regulation, public sector pensions, nuclear disarmament, social care in old age and gender discrimination in the work place.

Original music, commissioned by the Hostry Festival, to commemorate the Great War, sections of which will be performed as prelude to the new play Between The Lines.

Elegy For The Great War evokes the confusion, bravery and incomprehensible loss of those caught up in the First World War. It is music for all who are wounded and wandering, searching for safety and rest.

Parts of the Elegy have been specially arranged for two instruments and will be performed, in association with Gresham’s School music department, by Keith Hobday (violin) and Phillip Trzebiatowski (cello).

The Composer David Banks is an actor, director and writer who has composed music for many of his own projects. Elegy For The Great War is his first major commission.

Between the Lines is inspired by war poetry, a passionate play about the war to end all wars. A keeper of the graves in an old war cemetery is compelled to unravel a 100 year mystery.

Featuring, among others, the poems of Rupert Brooke, Wilfred Owen, Richard Aldington and Siegfried Sassoon.

Writer and performer Simon de Deney is Artistic Director of New Company and has written various BBC commissions, including ‘The Way It Is’ and ‘Future Perfect’.
