Absolutely heads out of town for the country pub experience, weighing up the Hind’s Head in Bray, the Greyhound in Letcombe Regis and 15 Queen Street in Maidenhead

eston Blumenthal’s pub dates back to the 15th century, when it opened as a hunting lodge and coaching inn. It’s less than 30 miles from Hammersmith, which makes it an easy destination for Sunday lunch, and Bray is a sweet little spot for a post-feast wander. Inside, the cavernous pub is dark and cosy, timberframed and low-ceilinged with small doorways, open fires, wood panelling and lots of cosy corners. On the walls are photographs, illustrations and clippings celebrating the site’s long history. The Sunday roast is Michelin-starred and comes as a set three-course meal. After some delicious crusty sourdough, there’s a high class pea and ham soup, a lovely bright green broth dotted with whole peas and small pieces of smoky ham, accompanied by an excellent Scotch egg – it’s a quail’s egg, perfectly soft boiled inside a well-

judged crust and served stylishly with sharp yellow mustard. The Hind’s Head has won awards for its Scotch eggs and these are a world away from the poor examples that are often offered up. The main act is roast Aberdeen Angus sirloin with Yorkshire pudding, horseradish cream, roast potatoes and lots of vegetables. It’s a large feast and everything is fine, if perhaps a little underwhelming in comparison to the memorable Scotch egg. Pudding, however, is seriously impressive: the quaking pudding is lusciously wobbly, eggy and spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg and compressed apple, served warm. It’s a comforting dish, much like the pub itself – just right for urbanites seeking a touch of rural escapism.
