YORKSHIRE YATTER

Literary greats are brought to life with an historic opening, writes Lisa Byrne

As a moody teenager in the mid 1980s, bored rigid during the long summer break, I’d escape the oppressive heatwave raging across our county to lock myself away with just a battered copy of Wuthering Heights for company. All I wished for was to retreat into that melodramatic world

How could Emily Brontë, 29, who’d lived such a sheltered life in the grim town of Haworth where the average life span was 19 years, have created such intense personalities as Cathy and Heathcli . Their desperate love transcended death, and despite being characters of pure fantasy, you can still sense their ghosts as you wander around the moors at Top

Withins, a ruined farmhouse reputedly the location for Wuthering Heights. Being a huge fan of Yorkshire’s most famed literary family, you can imagine how excited I was to be given an exclusive tour of The Brontë Birthplace in Thornton, Bradford, where Charlotte, Bramwell, Emily and Anne were all born in front of the parlour fireplace. After a huge fundraising mission undertaken by Brontë Birthplace Limited – a community benefit society – the small, terraced house on Market Street is finally in public ownership for the first time in its 200-year history.

Stepping through the front door I felt rather overwhelmed to be walking in the footsteps of its distinguished, long-deceased occupants. The rooms have been transformed into how they would have looked in the early 1800s complete with furniture from the period and original fixtures and fittings. Guests will be able to stay in one of the three bedrooms, each named after the authors, Charlotte, Emily and Anne, which have been decorated to reflect their individual work and personalities. Living in Thornton was a joyful time for the Brontës, before the curse of tuberculosis decimated the family. As their father Patrick once said: “My happiest days were spent there… this is where the family was complete: father, mother, and the children, and where they had kind friends.”

For people of a certain age – ie, me – reality TV series

Big Brother feels like it has been an ever present on our screens. The latest series, of the celebrity variety, kicked o on 7th April and once again threw up contestants best described as eclectic. “The anticipation of who’s going in, then getting to know them in a way no other reality show can do,” Will Best, the show’s co-presenter, says on why he loves the celebrity version. “And there are always people who surprise you. I do also feel like, as a host, you can be a bit more tongue in cheek with the celebs – they know what they’re getting themselves into, and they’re being paid handsomely for the privilege!”

This year’s rosters features the likes of Chesney Hawkes, Patsy Palmer and Daley Thompson alongside JoJo Siwa and Ella Rae Wise – and not forgetting

Mickey Rourke, whose entrance caused a stir thanks to the attention he lavished on Will’s co-presenter AJ Odudu, which required a bit of shepherding away by our interviewee. “Me and AJ go way back,” Will says. “We first worked together back in 2014 and have stayed really close ever since. She’s a brilliant presenter, and an even better friend. Honestly, hosting the live evictions is like having a night out with one of my besties, it just happens to be being watched by a few million people.”

All this seemed a world away for a lad who grew up in Tadcaster. “I used to work in advertising, which I was terrible at, so when I was about 23 I decided I wanted to try and work close to things I loved – music and comedy,” he explains his career journey to date. “But seeing as I am neither a musician or a comedian, I figured working on music shows with a comedy edge, like T4 back in the day, would be the next best thing. And through

Will Best talks to Absolutely about Big Brother memories, Bloody Marys and a love for Tadcaster Albion

a series of very fortunate, ‘right place, right time’ incidents, that’s how it worked out.”

I mentioned a certain age at the start of this feature, and Will himself recently celebrated his 40th birthday – “I honestly have no idea what you’re talking about. (Yes, I did, and I celebrated in a very undignified manner, by basically pretending it was my 21st and hosting a big club night)” – which means we are both well positioned to chat about when Big Brother first started way back in 2000. “I remember series 1, and being massively invested (like the rest of the country, and possibly the world?) in the Nasty Nick scandal,” Will recalls, “and I remember loving Brian and Bubble in series 2, but series 3 was the first one I became fully obsessed with. It’s still an absolute vintage, up there with 5 and 7 in my all-time list.”

What iconic BB moments will he always remember? “So many! Nadia winning series 5, Nikki Graham’s diary room rants,

Alex Sibley with the smoothest moment in TV history in series 3, the emotional, beautiful moment Cameron Cole came out in series 19… I could go on forever! And of course there are loads of iconic Celeb BB memories, of which the Ti any Pollard “David’s Dead” moment is clearly the all-time greatest [check it out on YouTube if you haven’t seen it – it’s a classic].”

It’s probably fair to say that as the years went on, interest in BB dwindled a little, but was pumped back up again when ITV revived the series last year, with Will and AJ fronting the new look show. “It was beyond a dream come true,” Will says about landing the presenting gig. “To be honest, I still can’t quite believe I’ve been lucky enough to work on the show. And I may be biased, but I really believe the series we’ve done so far stands up to any that have come

before. The team putting it all together are some of the most talented people I’ve ever had the privilege of working with.

“Relaunching a show with so much history, and such a dedicated fanbase, was always going to bring some pressure,” he adds, “but it’s been amazing how much the fans have got on board with the reboot. The connection people feel with the show is unlike anything I’ve worked on before, and it’s a privilege to be involved in something people are so passionate about. Whenever I bump into a fan of the show on the street I could honestly stand and talk to them about it for hours – if I’m with my girlfriend she literally has to drag me away!”

It’s a high profile role that, surely, will lead to a whole host of opportunities going forward. “I’m still just so surprised that anyone wants to give me a job that I don’t

want to jinx it by planning too far ahead,” he laughs about career aspirations. “The broad career bucket list is to host a quiz show (I bloody LOVE a quiz), get a couple of my own scripts away (just need to actually write them first), get more involved in radio, and start developing my own formats. And it would be nice to do some bits in America. Because that feels glamorous.”

One thing he has gone on to do is launch Bloody Drinks alongside Harry Farnham. “I bloody love Bloody Marys,” he laughs when asked about what inspired this business foray. “And me and Harry were fed up of being served dodgy ones in pubs, so when we saw the rise of premium ready made cocktails we thought we’d have a stab at launching a Bloody Mary in a can. After all, how hard could it be? Really bloody hard, it turned out. We’re five years in now, and still very much in a startup mode, but we’ve got listings in Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, lots of premium delis and bottle shops, The Ivy Group, and a few other pub chains, so things are heading in the right direction.”

Work has taken Will to London these days, but despite his high profile, he will never forget his roots. “I go home as often as I can, and I’m a big Tadcaster Albion fan, although it’s hard to get to as many games as I’d like,” he says. Does he have plenty of favourite Yorkshire hotspots? “My all time favourite restaurant is an incredible neighbourhood bistro in Horsforth called Bavette, so I go there whenever I can. If we’re feeling super posh my girlfriend and I might go to the spa at Rudding Park (it’s amazing). And of course I’ll try and make a trip to the home of the Brewers (Tadcaster Albion FC). I always used to go for a pint at The Angel & White Horse on Tadcaster high street, but it’s been closed for ages while they try and find a new landlord. Humphrey Smith, if you’re reading this, please get it reopened!” Or perhaps Will can be a little tongue in cheek with his new found celebrity pals and get them on board…

She eld Theatres new Artistic Director, ElizabethNewman, here introduces her inaugural season of shows, from their own creations to unmissable touring productions

ELIZABETH NEWMAN

It has been a great privilege to conceive my first season as She eld Theatres' Artistic Director. It’s been an exciting journey to create this year-long programme packed with a mix of new and familiar work, and I really hope there’s something for everyone to enjoy. We kick o with a beautiful classic drama in the Crucible, arguably one of the greatest plays ever written – Brian Friel’s Dancing at Lughnasa, in collaboration with the Royal Exchange Theatre. Consumed by Karis Kelly, in partnership with Paines Plough and Belgrade Theatre, follows and marks both our becoming the home of the Women’s Prize for Playwriting and the beginning of a season of entirely new work in the Playhouse. The rest of the year sees us producing My Brother's a Genius by Debris Stevenson, our fifth co-production with Theatre Centre, and now with National Youth Theatre of Great Britain. Into 2026, Living by She eld’s own Leo Butler is a moving family drama that spans five decades of life in the City.

Alongside the new work in the Playhouse, in the Crucible we will debut a brandnew adaptation of A Christmas Carol by Yorkshire’s Aisha Khan. This version will highlight She eld’s long history of singing the city’s unique Christmas carols.

After the festive period, we have two more new works. Crown of Blood, a new version of Macbeth by Oladipo Agboluaje, will be our latest collaboration with She eld’s Utopia Theatre, followed by The Ladies Football Club by the brilliant Tim Firth. Based on Stefano Massini’s drama, this new play celebrates the founding of women’s football in She eld in a munitions factory in 1917, and tracks the history of the sport, through the period of being banned, to the jubilant heights of the present-day Lionesses.

To wrap up our 2025/2026 programme, we’ll be putting on a fresh version of the 1960s classic musical Summer Holiday. We’re excited to bring this to life, spilling out from the auditorium and into our Square, where audiences can enjoy the She eld

Theatres Beach! In fact, across the entire season we’ll be hosting a variety of free special events inspired by our programme, including the Lughnasa Dance Festival, the Montgomery Theatre Summer Party, the She eld Theatres Candlelit Carol Concert, and even a theatre football tournament. These outdoor celebrations will bring people of all ages together and reflect our commitment to opening up every door and window, inviting everyone into our theatres. It also felt important that, as a big national organisation and now a family of four theatres, we also share a little bit of news for 2027. We are proud to announce in 2027 we will produce a big new adaptation by Stephanie Street of Sunjeev Sahota’s The Year of the Runaways. This will be with an international partner and will find a home in our Crucible. We’re incredibly proud to be powered by our amazing city, and can’t wait to welcome everyone into one of our four theatres this year.

YEAR OF THE RUNAWAYS

TOURING HIGHLIGHTS

She eld Theatres will be hosting the best plays, musicals, dance and comedy touring the UK in 2025, and into 2026. Here's a snapshot

THE LYCEUM

Following a sell-out run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Damian Williams returns to the Lyceum – this time not as She eld’s well-loved pantomime dame, but in The Last Laugh, where he stars as Tommy Cooper, alongside Bob Golding as Eric Morecambe and Simon Cartwright as Bob Monkhouse from 1st-5th July. Written and directed by Paul Hendy, The Last Laugh is a new play which re-imagines the lives of three of Britain’s all-time greatest comedy heroes. Filled with great gags, poignant stories and guaranteed to be an unforgettable night out.

Step inside Matthew Bourne’s The Midnight Bell, set in 1930s London, a tavern where one particular lonely-hearts club gather to play out their lovelorn a airs of the heart; bitter comedies of longing, frustration, betrayal and redemption. From 23rd-27th September.

The National Theatre’s Olivier Awardwinning smash hit Dear England comes to She eld, in a highly anticipated national tour. From multi award-winning writer James Graham and director Rupert Goold, this tells the uplifting, heartbreaking, and ultimately inspiring story of Gareth Southgate’s revolutionary tenure as England manager in a gripping examination of nation and game. A co-production with JAS Theatricals, from 21st-25th October.

THE CRUCIBLE

… Earnest? is a twist on a classic, from 20th-21st May. When a production of Oscar Wilde’s play gets underway, everything seems to be going to plan; that is, until the lead actor fails to arrive on cue and an actual audience member is chosen to star in the show. This oneof-a-kind comedy sensation is completely di erent, completely chaotic, and completely Wilde every single night.

Jen Brister is reactive – or so she’s been told. Apparently you don’t have to respond to every little thing around you. Finding herself in a constant state of exacerbation at the state of the world and people in general, Jen has been told she needs to chill the hell out. Can Jen find her zen? Find out on 23rd October.

As seen and heard on Taskmaster, Live at the Apollo, The Great British Sewing Bee and more, Sara Pascoe presents I Am A Strange Gloop on 29th October. Have you ever been awake in the middle of the night and thought something so smart and astute that you couldn’t wait for the world to wake up so you could tell them? This show is that thought – in that it doesn’t make much sense and is a bit weird on reflection.

THE PLAYHOUSE

Get ready for an unforgettable experience as Justin Moorhouse performs The Greatest

Performance Of My Life on 10th June. Covering pantomimes to dreams, how to behave in hospitals, small talk, realising your Mum is a northern version of Columbo, and how being a smart-mouthed kid saves you from a life of continually being beaten up. Funny and interesting, and perhaps a little bit to warm the soul too. Meet Danny, plastering since he was a kid, he’s not scared of anything, he’s RUM. Danny’s been up all night and now he’s rushing to finish a job before he has to give the speech of his life. RUM is a darkly humorous and powerful new play by Joe Mallalieu that wrestles with masculinity, mental health and addiction, on 12th June.

Malton WHY WE LOVE…

The Food Lovers Festival returns in May, the perfect reason to tuck into everything this North Yorkshire town has to o er

The market town of Malton in North Yorkshire is famous for its annual food festivals celebrating local produce, and for its trailblazing town centre of independent stores and awardwinning artisans, where you can find anything your taste-buds desire.

Not just a place to eat food, this is a place to experience food: from exquisite patisseries to micro-brewing, from award-winning gelateries to some of Yorkshire’s best bread, from fishmongers to greengrocers, it’s locally-made or grown, bursting with fresh local

ingredients, and showcasing exceptional craftsmanship – often in demand in the finest restaurants across the UK.

With the town centre focused around the marketplace, it is little surprise that markets form a hub of activity whenever they take place. Every Saturday, there’s a small traditional local market, from 9am to 3pm. The biggest market in the district takes place on the second Saturday of each month (March to November), which is like a mini food festival promising specialist food stalls, homewares and street food.

Three times a year – in May, September and December – Malton celebrates its produce and producers with extra special showcase events: the Malton Food Lover’s Festival in May, the Malton 10k in

September, and the Christmas Festival in December. Malton’s appetites are much bigger than its belly, however – Malton might be a small market town, but it has more to o er than many cities.

Malton has ancient history: the town is surrounded by world-class archaeological landscapes, including its own Roman fort and town. Not surprisingly, Malton Museum boasts collections of rare national importance, with events and exhibitions that bring the past vividly to life, including an annual Regency Ball!

Meanwhile, the town’s extraordinary food culture is mirrored in its thriving arts and crafts scene. Street upon street of independent art galleries, craft workshops, design studios and antique curiosity shops showcase the work of award-winning makers. Art even spills out onto the streets – look out for the Yorkshire Pudding Mural, or the Pink Cow.

Above all, Malton is a town that supports local makers, providing space and opportunity for creativity and excellence, and actively building its public art programme and its marketplace. You can even have a go yourself in company of the town’s masters, whether inventing your own bespoke bottle of gin, making a macaroon, unleashing your inner blacksmith, handcrafting your own eco-friendly candle, or meeting amazing local authors in conversation at Kemps Bookstore.

WHAT’S NEW

Malton is much more than a town: it’s a family of makers and creators brought together by a passion for food and art. Not surprisingly, some of the most exciting additions to Malton’s calendar in 2025 are brought about by collaborations, which encourage everyone to get fully hands-on and creative.

Highlights include the Malton Food Lovers Festival; The Cook’s Place new event series; After Dark Secret Society, supper

and cocktail club featuring the mixology skills of Roost Co ee & Roastery; Cooking the Books, a monthly book club recreating menus inspired by popular novels with Kemps Bookstore; and Loving Leftovers, a masterclass of ‘reloving’ where frugal becomes fun, with textiler Hermione Crowe.

In a town of ethical trailblazers, The Beecham Weigh is something of a local icon. Established 40 years ago by pharmacist ‘Mr B’ and now run by Ian Beecham’s daughter, Davina, it’s an Aladdin’s Cave of ethicallysourced organic foods, many of which are available with reduced waste using refill dispensers, and complementary medicine. The store has now expanded to o er special services, including blood and allergy testing.

Visitors to the Wesley Centre, an iconic landmark in the town, will soon be enjoying a state-of-the-art refurbishment. Thanks

to a major grant from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, Malton’s historic church is currently installing a flexible 600-seat auditorium, new facilities for the disabled, a concert and events box o ce, a community café and a purpose-built space for Malton Free Fridge, which provides free surplus food to more than 30,000 people a year.

One of the area’s most popular restaurants, Tykes at Sandburn Hall, has celebrated its 20th anniversary with a major makeover by award-winning interior designer, Rachel McLane, alongside a fresh new menu from head chef Mark Hudson, featuring local ingredients.

There’s also a rather special new signpost in Green Man’s Alley. Talented illustrator Nathan Boden has created a new outdoor artwork as part of Malton’s sculpture trail, which lures visitors into Talbot Yard.

The Tombstone Maker's Daughter

Kerala was the first restaurant to bring South Indian flavours to Yorkshire, and now it’s brought its authentic signature menus to Malton, in its second-only venture, receiving rave reviews from local diners.

And don’t miss Bias Stores. Stylish and sustainable, Bias is a new ‘hygge’ lifestyle outlet with a Scandinavian twist, and a welcome addition to the town’s many designers.

WHERE TO STAY

Malton has, so far, avoided the gaze of soulless national chain hotels, so you can be sure of a traditional Yorkshire welcome at the independent hostelries, country cottages, farmhouses and even converted shipping containers that provide a unique place to lay your head.

Favourites include The Talbot, a 17th century coaching inn at the gateway to the town; The Old Lodge, a 17th century Tudor mansion in three acres of manicured gardens; Chiltern Place is a collection

of luxurious self-catering apartments for two in the heart of Malton; and The Box BNB is a unique development of shipping containers converted into luxury cabins at Moor Close Farm, High Marishes.

A host of other holiday lets, cabins, glamping and farmhouses are available nearby, and slightly further afield, Sandburn Hall o ers hotel rooms, suites and lodges in Gri on Forest, whilst Flamingo Land has holiday lodges, cottages, and caravans, and the luxurious Dewars Hotel is right on its doorstep.

SEDUCING THE SENSES

What’s so extraordinary about Malton is that so much of the award-winning food and drink is made or prepared on the premises, so you don’t just buy food – you taste, smell, hear, see, and touch it. Prepare to be seduced with their sensational showcases for all of the senses.

With its carnival atmosphere, Malton’s free to enter food festival is amongst the

best in the UK, a celebration of local produce and a ‘must-taste’ experience of chef demos, tastings and talks, streetfood and stalls, and live music. The Food Lovers Festival, hailed as Yorkshire’s ‘Foodie Glastonbury’, takes place over bank holiday weekend, 24th-26th May.

The gourmet Malton 10k, a unique ‘race’ for foodies, is on 21st September, with the star attraction being the scrumptious Sunday Market. Its specialist stalls and street food are a welcome treat for hungry runners and spectators alike.

Then there is the Christmas Festival, festive fun with delicious food, gift stalls, street food, live music, family entertainment, and Malton’s shops dressed to impress, returning from 6th-7th December.

Explore Malton’s flavours on one of the UK’s top guided gastronomic tours: you’ll meet some of the town’s best artisan producers and go behind-thescenes to discover the secrets behind Malton’s most famous products while tasting treats along the way. At the Rare Bird Gin School in Talbot Yard, you’ll be making your own bespoke bottle of gin with the guidance of a master distiller. This is a working distillery, open to view, so you can see how this delicious drink is hand-crafted in the heart of town.

Malton’s Cookery School, The Cook’s Place, is the place to cook, eat, drink and enjoy a great day out while focusing on great Yorkshire produce. No matter what level your cooking skills, award-winning chef Gilly Robinson will help you create and enjoy courses ranging from a Family Bake Day to a Christmas Feast All Wrapped Up. What’s clear is that there is plenty to sink your teeth into in Malton.

GRAPE news

Wine recommendations for the month

Glorioso Crianza, Rioja 2020

 £11.50

Toasty vanilla meets vibrant black cherry fruit in this unmistakably classic Rioja. Smooth, silky, and packing a punch. 12 months ageing in French oak has enhanced this contemporary expression of Rioja, toasty, plump and fruity.

Teixeiró Vinho Verde 2023  £8.25

With its note of honeysuckle, peach and orange blossom and crisp, refreshing taste, this o ers a slightly more floral example of Vinho Verde. This is a blend of local grapes loureiro, alvarinho and avesso and is all about charm and drinkability.

Señorio de Sarr a Rosado, Navarra 2024  £8.95

A deeply coloured, fabulously fruity dry Spanish rosé made from local garnacha. Fresh red-berry fruit, a streak of citrussy grapefruit and a refreshing dry finish makes this a great wine for food that packs a punch but equally leaves you feeling refreshed.

Since it was founded back in 1874, The Wine Society has dared to do business a little differently. A CULINARY JOURNEY

Exploring the history of San Carlo Restaurants

San Carlo Restaurants has etched its name into the annals of the UK dining scene as a symbol of Italian culinary excellence. Established in 1992, the brand has enjoyed a trajectory marked by growth, innovation, and a steadfast commitment to authentic Italian cuisine. From its humble beginnings to becoming a beloved institution, the history of San Carlo Restaurants is a story of passion, perseverance, and a dedication to flavour.

THE BEGINNING: A VISION COMES TO LIFE

The journey of San Carlo begins with its founder, Carlo Distefano. Originally from Sicily, Distefano brought with him a deep appreciation for Italian culinary traditions. The first San Carlo restaurant opened in the heart of Birmingham, a city that was, and still is, a melting pot of cultures. It quickly became known for its vibrant atmosphere and authentic dishes, setting the standard for Italian dining in the UK. Distefano’s vision was clear: to provide diners with not just food, but an experience that celebrated the richness

of Italian culture. With a keen focus on fresh ingredients and traditional recipes, the first San Carlo restaurant laid the groundwork for a brand that would soon expand beyond Birmingham.

EXPANSION AND GROWTH

The success of the original San Carlo restaurant led to a remarkable expansion. In the late 1990s, the brand began to grow, with new locations opening not just in Birmingham, but in other major cities across the UK. By prioritising quality and consistency, each new establishment upheld the standards set by the original restaurant.

The San Carlo experience goes beyond just food; it encompasses ambiance and service. The restaurants are designed to reflect the warmth of Italian hospitality, creating a space where guests feel welcome and valued. This commitment to excellence resonated with diners, leading to a loyal customer base that continued to grow.

LANDMARK EVENTS AND RECOGNITION

As the San Carlo brand solidified its presence in the UK, it garnered numerous accolades that underscored its reputation as a leader in the industry. The restaurant group received various awards for its exceptional food quality and innovative dining experiences. This recognition helped to elevate the status of San Carlo Restaurants, making them a preferred choice for locals and tourists alike.

THE EVOLVING MENU: TRADITION MEETS INNOVATION

One of the hallmarks of San Carlo Restaurants is its ability to adapt while

staying true to its roots. The menu has evolved over the years to include a range of dishes that reflect both traditional Italian cuisine and modern culinary trends. Seasonal ingredients are a focal point, ensuring that the menu remains fresh and exciting. Signature dishes such as wood-fired pizzas, handmade pasta, and fine seafood o er guests an authentic taste of Italy.

A BRIGHT FUTURE

As of 2025, San Carlo Restaurants continue to thrive, with several locations operating across London, Manchester, and beyond. The brand’s commitment to authenticity and quality, combined with its innovative approach to Italian cuisine, has ensured its place in the competitive landscape of the UK dining scene. Looking forward, the future appears promising – with plans for continued expansion and a focus on sustainability and community engagement, the company is poised to remain a staple of Italian dining in the UK. The journey

that began in Birmingham in 1992 has transformed into a rich history of passion, flavour, and an unwavering commitment to providing an unparalleled dining experience. San Carlo Restaurants stand not just as eateries, but as ambassadors of Italian culinary culture, reminding us that food is much more than sustenance – it’s a celebration of life.

FIFTY TWO at Rudding Park is one this month and has celebrated by being awarded 3 AA Rosettes. Chef Adam Degg tells us how he did it

Q This interview will appear in our May issue, when FIFTY TWO celebrates its first anniversary. Has it been a whirlwind of a year?

A Absolutely, I can’t believe it’s been a year already! Launching FIFTY TWO was a busy and stressful time, but seeing the hard work pay o with recognition from guests, newspapers and receiving awards has been amazing. Now we have really got into our stride, I’m excited to see what the future brings.

Q The most recent news is the restaurant being awarded 3 AA Rosettes. What does that recognition mean to you?

A It is amazing to achieve such an accolade in the first year, and it’s a testament to our team’s dedication and hard work. We are really proud to deliver a fantastic dining experience which resonates with our guests.

Q Does such an accolade add a touch more pressure to delivering every single time?

A We always feel pressure to deliver, but in the most positive way. We always want to learn and improve to make sure that the guests’ experience is fantastic.

Q Looking back, when did you first have the idea of launching FIFTY TWO and what were you keen to o er?

A I first visited Rudding Park when I was still living in London; I thought the experience in the hotel and spa was amazing and saw potential for a really unique dining o ering which would only elevate the whole Rudding experience. The kitchen garden really impressed me and I wanted to do something that would really showcase the produce that Emma [Pugh, the kitchen gardener] grows. I love a party, so really wanted to bring a party atmosphere with a high level of food and service.

“I SAW THE POTENTIAL FOR A REALLY UNIQUE DINING OFFERING”

Q Why was Rudding Park the perfect base?

A Rudding Park has beautiful grounds and a really impressive hotel and spa, but what really makes it special is the family feel it has. There’s a fantastic team here; from the gardeners to the marketing team; and the Mackaness family that own the estate are so supportive, they’ve built me my dream restaurant so I will forever be grateful to them. There’s also a real commitment at Rudding to being sustainable and that really appealed to me.

Q From day one, what have you looked to o er with the food you serve up?

A The main focus is the garden, we are lucky to be in the heart of Yorkshire with the most amazing produce, but also to have such an impressive garden just a few steps from the kitchen makes the whole experience connected. It’s a real treat to have such fresh ingredients to use and the quality really shines through. It is really important to us to shine light on the amazing produce we grow here

on site. We also preserve a lot of ingredients so when it gets to winter, we still have lots of availability when there is not as much growing. Now that we are entering spring, Emma is constantly at the door with new bits for us to try and get inventive with! Each dish incorporates ingredients from the garden, but we also use local purveyors and suppliers and feel really proud to represent great produce.

Q Who do you use locally?

A R&J Yorkshire’s Finest is a butcher’s with deep roots to the land and an abundance of farming heritage. They have their own farm in Nidderdale called Waterford Farm, and this is where their prized Signature

“IT’S GREAT TO BE PART OF THE SERVICE AND TO INTERACT WITH THE GUESTS”

Waterford Farm livestock comes from. We also use Hodgsons, a fishmonger based in Hartlepool. Michael sends me a message each morning with what is available so we can change our o ering daily. We’re using some huge Whitby crabs this week. All our crockery comes from local producers too, we use Kath Cox who is based in York for most of our pots and plates, and we’ve just had a delivery of bespoke co ee cups from Aly who runs Aka Pottery who is based here in Harrogate.

Q How do guests tend to react to the immersive experience?

A The reaction has been incredible; it’s like having a dinner party every night! No night is the same. The sta have as much fun as the guests do too, which makes it such a pleasure. Us chefs are usually hidden away in a basement or back kitchen, so it’s great to be part of the service and get to interact with the guests.

Q What have been some of your favourite dishes over the past year?

A I get asked this a lot! And for me it’s our bread. It’s made with fermented potatoes from the garden and has a lovely soft crumb, like a brioche. We only start baking it once guests arrive. So once everyone is seated it gets served fresh out of the oven with cultured butter that is churned daily, seasoned with nasturtium salt, a sunflower seed hummus and a green

goddess dressing from all of the herbs from the garden. I feel like it’s a very strong first impression to our food each night.

Q What kind of dishes can we expect from you this spring?

A Rhubarb is finally thriving, which we are using for a welcome drink. We make a vinegar with it for a starter and it also features in a dessert. Wild garlic is emerging on the grounds, Callum our junior sous chef goes for a morning run and picks it on the golf course here. It’s currently served with a mushroom dish, but we will be preserving as much as we can for the rest of the year.

Q Are you doing anything special for the first anniversary?

A We are diving right into our first birthday in full force! Expect our favourite dishes from the past year, party games and more surprises. Just know it will be a big celebration for what we have achieved in the past year.

Q Is the sky the limit for where you go from here?

A We’ve got into a really nice rhythm now and with a great team behind me, it is exciting to see where things will go in the next year. We will constantly be keeping things interesting with events, dishes and developments so keep your eyes peeled!

Dream continues

The big day is over and now the happy couple deserve a break to remember. Prezola pick out the honeymoon trends we can expect to see in 2025

As newlyweds look forward to their dream getaways, Prezola, the UK’s favourite honeymoon fund and wedding gift registry, has revealed the latest honeymoon trends for 2025. From dream destinations to budget preferences, sustainability concerns, and the rise of the ‘buddymoon’, this year’s trends highlight how couples are reimagining their post-wedding travels.

TOP THREE DESTINATIONS

According to Prezola’s latest survey, Greece, Italy, and (yes) the UK have emerged as the most sought-after honeymoon destinations for newlyweds. While classic European hotspots continue to reign, an increasing number of couples are opting for staycations within the UK, highlighting a shift towards domestic travel.

“Greece is the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation,” Hayley Stout, marketing director at Prezola says. “Spend your days exploring ancient ruins, islandhopping in the Aegean, or unwinding in a quiet taverna with fresh seafood and local wine. Whether it’s Santorini’s sunsets, Mykonos’ energy, or hidden beaches on lesser-known islands, Greece delivers unforgettable moments without trying too hard. With its breathtaking landscapes, rich culture, and endless opportunities to explore, it’s no surprise Greece is a top honeymoon destination.

“THE HONEYMOON IS JUST THE BEGINNING OF A LIFELONG LOVE AFFAIR WITH THEIR DESTINATION”

“Italy is all about e ortless romance,” Hayley continues. “Drive through Tuscany’s rolling hills, take a slow afternoon in a Roman piazza, or explore Venice by gondola. It’s a place where food, culture, and history come together seamlessly – whether you’re sipping wine in a quiet village or watching the Amalfi Coast turn golden at sunset. From world-famous cuisine to stunning scenery, Italy o ers the kind of timeless beauty that makes it one of the most popular honeymoon choices.”

And what about the UK? “The UK o ers a di erent kind of honeymoon – think cosy countryside escapes, dramatic coastal walks, and historic cities. Stay in a grand Scottish castle, explore the Cotswolds' charming villages, or experience London’s top restaurants and theatre. With 2025’s royal celebrations adding extra buzz, it’s the perfect time to see the UK at its best. Its mix of history, luxury, and stunning landscapes makes it an increasingly sought-after honeymoon spot for couples looking for something unique.”

BUDGET & FUNDING

With the rising cost of travel, many couples are turning to honeymoon fund tools to help finance their trips. Prezola found that 68% of couples used a honeymoon fund tool within their wedding registry to cover their honeymoon expenses.

The most common honeymoon budget falls between £2,000 and £3,000, and 44% of couples planned their honeymoon within less than six months, indicating a growing trend toward shorter planning timelines.

Some 43% of couples opted for multiple honeymoon experiences, such as a ‘mini moon’ immediately after the wedding, followed by a longer, more elaborate trip later.

HOW COUPLES ARE TRAVELLING

The way couples experience their honeymoons is also evolving. While 40% of newlyweds prefer a single-location honeymoon, another 40% choose to explore three or more places during their trip – and 34% of couples admitted that social media heavily influenced their honeymoon choices, showcasing the role of platforms like Instagram and TikTok in shaping travel preferences.

Modern couples are placing greater importance on sustainability and ethical travel practices. Half of respondents reported that environmental concerns played a significant role in their honeymoon planning.

This signals a growing demand for eco-friendly resorts, carbon-neutral flights, and ethical tourism experiences.

THE PERFECT HONEYMOON

From white sandy beaches to adrenalinefueled adventures, couples are looking for a well-rounded honeymoon experience.

Relaxation, adventure, beaches, and cultural immersion were the top priorities when planning their trips, indicating that newlyweds want both excitement and downtime on their getaways.

For many couples, the honeymoon is just the beginning of a lifelong love a air with their destination: some 56% of respondents said they plan to return to their honeymoon spot in the future

“At Prezola, we’ve always believed that your honeymoon should be as unique as you both, and our latest insights show that couples in 2025 are embracing that more than ever,” adds Hayley. “From the rise of multi-stop adventures and buddymoons to a growing focus on sustainability and ethical travel, newlyweds are designing honeymoons that reflect their values and passions. Whether it’s a dreamy Greek island escape, a road trip through Italy, or a luxury UK staycation, couples are making memories that last a lifetime –often with the help of honeymoon funds. It’s incredible to see how modern couples are redefining this special trip.”

Beth and Liam Featherstone reveal all about their big day on

20th September 2024 at Oaklands in East Yorkshire

Q What attracted you to Oaklands for your wedding day?

A Liam: Oaklands was the perfect mix of both country and modern, which is exactly what we wanted. We didn’t actually look at any other venues, as soon as we found Oaklands we fell in love and knew that this was where we wanted to celebrate our day. All of our guests commented that they’d never been to such a stunning venue.

Q How did the venue suit the style of your wedding, did it live up to your expectations?

A Beth: Our expectations were exceeded! We live in a small country village and wanted that style to show through both the venue and our décor. The rustic wood lodge and country details throughout the venue really stood out to us while still being very modern and classy. Every detail had been thought of, everything was just perfect.

Q Did you feel well supported by the team at Oaklands on the build up to your wedding?

A Beth: From the moment we started planning our wedding, the team at Oaklands

made us feel completely supported. We can’t thank Andrea enough for her dedication, attention to detail, and unwavering support throughout the entire process. Andrea was incredible at listening to our vision and helping us bring it to life. She was always there to answer questions, provide guidance, and keep us on track with the planning. The Oaklands team worked seamlessly together to ensure everything ran smoothly on the day itself. From the moment we arrived, we felt like the day was in good hands.

Q How did you both feel on the day?

A Liam: I was both nervous and excited, I didn’t think I would get emotional, but seeing our daughter and then Beth

“Every detail had been thought of, everything was just perfect”

walking down the aisle got me!

Beth: For me this day had been a long time coming, I’d been waiting almost 11 years! I was so excited to become Mrs Featherstone, but there were a lot of nerves too. Having my bridesmaids with me and knowing that Liam was going to be waiting at the end of the aisle made it easier.

Q What parts from the day stood out for you the most?

A Beth: The whole day from start to finish was just so memorable, having our family and closest friends celebrate with us was such an amazing feeling. Finally, being Liam’s wife after all these years is a big one! Seeing our daughter Olivia walking down the aisle really stands out for us both along with our first dance. Also, my Grandad walked me down the aisle, which was very special for me, I always said from a young age that I wanted him to do that so him being there and giving me away was something I’ll never forget.

Why you really should think about pre and post nuptial agreements

As you are planning for your wedding with all the excitement of looking forward to your lives together, I suspect you would want to skip over this article which suggests some element of distrust or makes this all feel transactional, whilst dampening the romanticism – but please hear me out. Think of a pre/post nuptial agreement like an insurance policy that you probably will never need to use, but it is there just in case.

JUST IN CASE… READ ON

For any pre-nuptial agreement to be enforceable by the family court you need to be able to demonstrate:

1. You obtained independent legal advice from an experienced family lawyer who is ideally a member of Resolution – the professional body for family lawyers that are focused on settling agreements amicably and with the minimum of cost and anxiety.

2. The agreement is prepared well in advance of the wedding to ensure there is no undue pressure to sign. If there is not enough time before the wedding, a post nuptial agreement can be prepared.

3. There has been full financial disclosure by both partners to ensure total transparency of the financial position of the other. This ensures you are entering the agreement having su cient information to make an informed decision of the implications.

4. There are regular reviews included in the agreement to take into consideration life changing events such as the arrival of children or chronic illness, and also longevity of a relationship, which over time suggests increased sharing of all assets.

WHO THESE APPLY TO

It is a common misconception that these agreements only apply to the super wealthy, not helped by a case recently reported in the news, where a wealthy couples' pre-nuptial agreement was challenged by the husband who contested, amongst many financial requests, that an additional £26,000 was necessary as a food allowance as he couldn’t cook. Incidentally the judge ruled that he should learn to cook as “it is not di cult”. Pre and post-nuptials also make immediate sense too for those about to enter a new marriage, but where one or both partners have divorced before and perhaps have children whose

WHAT CAN THE AGREEMENT INCLUDE?

• Assets you bring into the marriage;

• The family home;

• Any inherited funds;

• Money in joint accounts and joint property;

• Savings accrued during the marriage;

• Pensions;

• Debts;

• Maintenance and of so for how long;

• Financial arrangements for any children;

• Assets if either of you die.

Q What are some of Coppergate Clinics most popular procedures?

A While Coppergate Clinic o ers an array of world-class surgical services, three procedures consistently stand at the forefront of our o erings. Our most sought-after treatments include:

1. BEST FOR: FACIAL FRAMEWORK

Deep Plane Face & Neck Lift

The lowdown: The Deep-plane facelift is an evolution of conventional facelift techniques that involves the undermining, release and repositioning of the deeper layers of the face. It has the advantage of giving natural, long-lasting results and often harmoniously paired with complementary procedures such as Lip Lifts, Blepharoplasties and Fat Transfer to further elevate the results. The use of a CO2 laser gives yet another dimension to our patients’ outcomes by simultaneously addressing any associated skin quality issues.

Results: A deep plane face and neck lift o ers a refined transformation, restoring youthful contours with remarkable subtlety and longevity. Expect a refreshed, harmonious appearance, never overdone, often described as turning back the clock by a decade or more. The outcome is not just rejuvenation, but a sophisticated return to one’s most radiant self.

“Patients are the centre of everything we do. The level of wraparound care we provide is exemplary”

2. BEST FOR: FEMININE FORM

Breast Augmentation, Mastopexy and Reduction

The lowdown: By providing a range of surgical breast procedures such as Augmentation, Mastopexy and Reduction, we can help women to maintain, enhance, and even rebuild their self-esteem and quality of life. Whether it is to restore breast volume post-pregnancy, addressing congenital asymmetry, or achieving a more proportionate figure, the surgeons at Coppergate Clinic can use implants or fat transfer in conjunction with mastopexy techniques to create a fuller, more balanced appearance. Due to our commitments to patient safety, we only partner with the most trusted implant manufacturers.

Results: Breast augmentation o ers a personalised transformation that enhances both shape and volume, creating a harmonious balance with the body’s natural contours. These procedures help achieve a more balanced silhouette, whether through augmentation or reduction, tailored to individual desire. The result is a refined and natural look, o ering a subtle yet noticeable improvement in proportion and aesthetics.

3. BEST FOR: SIGNATURE SILHOUETTE VASER Liposuction with Power Assisted Liposuction (PAL)

The lowdown: Modern trends in body contouring are focused on the use of liposuction in combination with RENUVION Skin Tightening procedures. VASER is a great alternative to the traditionally more invasive liposuction which utilises advanced ultrasound technology to precisely target and liquefy fat, o ering a more refined, less invasive alternative. The procedure ensures smoother, more natural contours with minimal trauma to surrounding tissue, leading to quicker recovery and less swelling. Results: Through precise techniques, this treatment targets areas that resist diet and exercise, delivering a smooth, toned, and defined silhouette. Whether it’s the abdomen, thighs, or flanks, liposuction sculpts and streamlines, o ering a more sculpted and youthful appearance. The result is not just a slimmer physique, but a newfound sense of confidence, where every curve is beautifully redefined, and your body feels as graceful as it looks.

Martin’s stroke made him speechless, but expert speech therapy helped him find his words again. Here’s his story - and how you can help others in his situation

It had been a good day so far. That morning at walking football, 60-yearold Martin scored a goal. After lunch with his wife Joanne, they did some chores – starting with moving some bedroom furniture. But when he sat down for a break, Martin knew something was wrong. He couldn’t move – or speak. After being rushed by ambulance to Leeds Teaching Hospitals, Martin had a thrombectomy to remove a blood clot. Martin was lucky. There are only two hospitals in the country that can perform this life-saving operation – and Leeds General Infirmary is one of them.

But the stroke left devastating damage. Martin couldn’t speak at all at first; when the words returned, they were confused and out of order. Around a third of stroke patients experience aphasia, a language disorder that a ects word use in speaking, listening, spelling and reading. Its impact can be felt throughout a person’s life.

The Leeds Hospitals speech and language therapy team supported Martin to use technology to rebuild his communication. Martin says acting fast was key to his rehabilitation. “After a stroke, early intervention is the best way to develop your speech. Access to resources in hospital were so beneficial to me.”

New speech and language therapy research is vital to lessening the damage caused by conditions like aphasia. Leeds Hospitals Charity has invested over £39,000 into a project focused on new digital tools for patient recovery, led by Jen Thomson, Stroke Clinical Specialist Speech and Language Therapist.

“This research is crucial,” Martin says. He became an ‘expert by experience’ representative for the project – knowing how important his voice could be for other patients. “My improvement through therapy was transformational. All patients should have the opportunity to use digital tools in hospital.”

Groundbreaking research, like this aphasia project, are made possible through gifts in Wills to Leeds Hospitals Charity. Thanks to these thoughtful gifts, Martin can once again speak with his family and friends.

Rufus underwent his first operation for a blocked bowel at just 30 hours old. It was a warning sign of cystic fibrosis. Today, thanks to expert care and pioneering medication at Leeds Teaching Hospitals, Rufus’ future looks bright.

Learning that your precious newborn has a life-limiting condition is heartbreaking. Shortly after Rufus was born, the tests confirmed his parents’ worst fear – Rufus had cystic fibrosis.

A condition that causes a thick, sticky mucus build-up, often in the lungs and digestive system, it once meant a shortened life. Today, thanks to medical advancements, many live longer with the illness. But cystic fibrosis can bring many complications which a ect quality of life.

Rufus’ first months were to prove more challenging yet. He was underweight and needed the help of Jacqui, a dietician at Leeds Children’s Hospital, to get his development back on track.

“Jacqui diagnosed Rufus with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth – the medication was a turning point, Rufus started to put on weight,” Rufus’ dad Ben remembers.

Rufus is now benefiting from recent medical advances for cystic fibrosis.

Thanks to the kindness of people giving gifts in their Wills, researchers at Leeds Children’s Hospital can work tirelessly to develop groundbreaking treatments for patients like Rufus.

As Dr Daniel Peckham, Professor of Respiratory Medicine explains, these thoughtful gifts work to drive world-leading research. “Donations are so important – they allow us to continue with our research into better treatments, and, ultimately, a cure. It also ensures we can make the lives of patients like Rufus as comfortable as possible while they’re here in the hospital.”

Rufus starting treatment at such a young age will help to ensure he can cope with the challenges of his condition as he gets older. Rufus is now twoyears-old and thriving – just like any other cheeky toddler. His life-changing diagnosis won’t hold him back.

You could help children like Rufus coping with cystic fibrosis to live longer, happier, healthier lives, by writing your Will for free with Bequeathed, the online Will writing partner. A gift in your Will to Leeds Hospitals Charity could help upgrade crucial equipment, fund world-leading researchers and unlock the answers to some of our biggest medical challenges. One day, it could lead to a cure for cystic fibrosis.

TOUCHES

For 25 years, Susie Watson Designs has been the go-to for beautiful pieces for the home. The founder discusses evolution, inspiration and Harrogate

“I SAW AN OPPORTUNITY TO CREATE SOMETHING MORE HOLISTIC”

Avisit to the Susie Watson Designs outlet in Harrogate is an eyeopening experience. Everywhere you look there are stunning creations and a wealth of choice for any interior scheme. But what’s clear is that this all stems from a love for design.

This year, Susie Watson celebrates 25 years in business and she has become known for everything from interior design schemes to perfect pottery pieces, working with highly skilled artisans along the way. Here, she tells Absolutely how the business came to be and why she won’t be swayed by trend-led reviews any time soon.

Q Before launching your own business, were you involved in the interiors industry?

A Yes, I worked alongside my husband refurbishing houses in central London. We had a small team of builders, focusing mainly on structural changes, kitchens, and bathrooms. I also mixed my own paint colours, which was my first real exploration into design.

Q Was the industry very di erent then?

A Absolutely. Design and interiors have evolved tremendously since those early days.

Q What inspired you to go it alone and launch Susie Watson Designs?

A I have always been self-employed, so starting my own business felt natural. The idea took shape when we opened an art gallery in London. I was keen to explore art beyond traditional paintings and saw an opportunity to create something more holistic.

Q Was it challenging to get the company o the ground?

A Yes, incredibly. Starting a business is always di cult, and I had no experience in retail. I also faced challenges with people attempting to copy my pottery designs, which was both upsetting and a steep learning curve.

Q From the outset, what did you want to o er?

A I wanted to broaden the idea of art beyond paintings and o er beautifully

designed, handmade products that bring joy to everyday life. Good design should be accessible and enrich the spaces we live in.

Q How do you reflect on those first few years?

A They were tough – though, fortunately, you don’t fully realise it at the time! Passion and perseverance kept me going.

Q How has the business evolved over the past 25 years?

A We’ve built a skilled team of artisans in India and Sri Lanka, allowing us to refine and expand our designs. In the UK, we collaborate with a fantastic sofa maker and produce our wool throws in Yorkshire. Finding the right people and developing products takes time, but it’s incredibly rewarding. Opening stores, designing interiors, and building teams who genuinely care about our products have also been key. A great deal of our success stems from the dedication of our teams – whether in the shops, at head o ce, or in the workshops where our pieces come to life.

Q Why did you decide to open a shop in Yorkshire?

A Yorkshire is one of England’s most

beautiful counties, and it felt important to establish a presence in the north. I had always hoped to open stores in Yorkshire and Cheshire, and now we have.

Q What made Harrogate the perfect location?

A Harrogate is an elegant town with a wonderful sense of style. It felt like the ideal setting for us in North Yorkshire.

Q What can customers expect to find in the Harrogate store?

A Everything needed to create a beautiful home – from paints and wallpapers to handmade furniture, kilims, and hand-printed fabrics. We also have our signature ceramics, cushions, and throws, all set within a charming period building with a stunning Victorian rooflight and gallery – a perfect backdrop for our designs.

Q What’s new at Susie Watson Designs in 2025?

A We’re introducing new embroidered fabrics, fine art prints, and wall hangings to our collection, along with more ceramics and cushions. There’s always something exciting in the works.

Q Are there any particular trends you’re noticing this year?

A We don’t follow trends. Decorating a home is a significant investment, and we believe good design should be timeless rather than trend-driven.

Q Are you planning anything special for your 25th anniversary?

A Yes! This summer, we’re bringing back our much-loved strawberry ceramics, one of our earliest designs. Customers still ask for them, and ‘Oscar,’ our very first design, remains a bestseller.

Q Finally, what’s next for Susie Watson Designs?

A Our ideas are always evolving. I never follow a rigid long-term plan – one idea naturally leads to another, and that’s how the business has grown so far.

Empowering EDUCATION

Harrogate Ladies’ College have launched a new programme designed to equip Sixth Formers for what lies ahead. Head of Sixth Form, Bonnie Christie, tells us more

Q What initially inspired the school to set up the Empower Programme?

A In addition to constantly reviewing and evaluating our Sixth Form academic o ering, we wanted to create a programme which outlined the all-encompassing and holistic experience of studying for your A-levels at Harrogate Ladies’ College.

We know we have a fantastic academic o ering, but there is so much more to being part of our Sixth Form community. With this in mind, we were able to bring together a programme which is designed to equip our Sixth Form pupils with skills, confidence and resilience to excel beyond school.

Q Why do you think something like this is crucial in this day and age?

A At the crux of our culture, we aim to develop a passion for learning and a love of life in every single pupil that comes through our school. We understand the professional landscape is always evolving, so equipping our Sixth Form pupils with key skills like research, leadership, and independent learning enables them to thrive in whichever career they desire.

Our current Sixth Form cohort have shown interest in a broad range of careers, including studying degrees like Veterinary Science, Aerospace Engineering, Fashion, Graphic Design and Architecture, as well as pursuing non-UCAS based courses like apprenticeships at PWC. In this day and

“SIXTH FORM IS AN EMOTIONAL AND INTELLECTUAL JOURNEY”

age, there is more choice than ever when pursuing future careers, and the Empower Programme provides bespoke, personalised support, guidance and a clear pathway to ensure our Sixth Form pupils have the confidence, ask the right questions and feel fully supported regardless of their passion.

Q Can you tell us more about the four dynamic pillars?

A Academic excellence is at the core of the Empower Programme, and beyond this foundation, the four dynamic pillars exist to highlight the wider opportunities studying A-levels at Harrogate Ladies’ College can o er:

THINK – Developing intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities; GROW – Encouraging personal development, independence, and adaptability;

LEAD – Cultivating leadership

skills, teamwork, and initiative through real life challenges; PROPEL – Providing career guidance, mentorship, and university preparation, including Oxbridge, Medicine, Law, and international pathways.

Q What is Flourish?

A Flourish is an all-encompassing wellbeing programme that ensures all Harrogate Ladies’ College pupils have the support and guidance available to thrive, as well as the social, emotional and interpersonal skills to be resilient, confident, and compassionate individuals who can navigate challenges,

build meaningful relationships, and achieve their full potential in all aspects of life.

Our Flourish team, led by our Designated Safeguarding Lead and Designated Mental Health Lead, meet weekly to discuss the wellbeing of every single pupil at Harrogate Ladies’ College. This proactive approach allows us to develop both short and long-term action plans, assign wellness mentors and foster a school-wide culture of inclusivity. The knowledge of our pupils individually, and the collaborative approach of our multi-disciplinary Flourish team, ensures the team can proactively anticipate pupils’ needs and o er bespoke support.

The Empower Programme is underpinned by Flourish, as we are acutely aware of the Sixth Form experience being an emotional and intellectual journey, and the need for comprehensive care to ensure each Sixth Form pupil receives individualised support, guidance and encouragement they need to thrive.

Q How key is it to treat each pupil as an individual?

A Treating each pupil as an individual is at the core of our educational ethos. We emphasise knowing all pupils personally,

and facilitate this through excellent pupil:teacher ratios, small class sizes and twice daily contact with form tutors. Our curriculum is designed to deliver a stimulating and exciting learning experience tailored to each pupil’s needs. Small class sizes enable our teachers to e ectively adapt their learning techniques which fosters a depth of learning and understanding. Individual attention is a cornerstone of our philosophy, integral to our mission of developing a deep passion for learning and a love of life for our pupils.

Q What else do you feel sets Harrogate Ladies’ College’s Sixth Form apart from other schools?

A As a school, we are small enough to o er personalised academic support, a tight-knit community and a dedicated Sixth Form Centre, but we also o er extensive leadership and extra-curricular programmes, and the ability to o er a broad range of pathways to outstanding future opportunities for every single Sixth Form pupil. This is evidenced by our Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) programme, which is a bespoke programme to encourage pupils to embrace

Science opportunities, develop critical thinking in Science and Technology, and rewards self-motivation in a typically maledominated field. We’ve seen an increased proportion of pupils study a wealth of science related subjects since launching WiSE in 2022, including Aerospace Engineering, Astrophysics and Mechanical Engineering, and nearly half of our 2025 university o ers are from STEM subjects at some of the top universities in the country. We’re proud to provide personalised pathways to fulfilling, rewarding and inspiring future opportunities for every single Sixth Form pupil.

Yorkshire Sculpture Park (YSP) welcomed children with limb di erences and their families for a special weekend event, in celebration of British Science Week (7th-16th March).

Linking to the themes of adapt and change, YSP partnered with She eldbased British Glass and Barnsley-based Amazelab for a full day of events and multi-sensory workshops which encouraged the children to try making their own castings, whilst exploring materials and processes associated with glass making.

LimbBo, a Yorkshire-based charity, supports children with limb di erences and their families across the country. The activity-packed day allowed the children, young people and siblings to be part of something unique and tailored to them, whilst their parents were

Children from LimbBo enjoyed a unique event at Yorkshire Sculpture Park recently

able to relax and support each other through their own lived experiences.

Jane Hewitt, a trustee of LimbBo Foundation, has worked with YSP for many years. She explains: “We started bringing my grandchildren Tommy, who is limb di erent, and Layla to YSP and we always found it very welcoming. Limb di erence was never an issue and as we worked with Emma and her team we quickly realised YSP was a great environment for all children to be together.

“YSP’s commitment to inclusivity is evident all around, from their marketing materials to murals in the restaurant that feature children with limb di erence. As Tommy and Layla have grown older they now help other children from LimbBo on visits to YSP. They know the space so well, both physically and emotionally.”

The activity day included around 50 participants and also featured YSP artist educators Puy Soden and Nat

Bellingham who provided creative sessions inspired by Bharti Kher’s powerful exhibition Alchemies, which is open at YSP until 5th May.

YSP’s Informal Learning Manager, Emma Spencer, says: “The family day for LimbBo families inspired by Bharti Kher’s exhibition was a wonderful day. YSP aims to provide a reflective and safe space where the children from LimbBo can explore and learn about art, while we learn how to be more inclusive. As it was British Science Week, we wanted to celebrate how art and science can come together.

“It was a great opportunity to explore Bharti’s work with its themes of change and transformation to inspire the families,” she adds. “We hope that all the participants were able to make a connection to themselves as artists, as well as make amazing memories.”

It is well documented that a good wellbeing o ering in schools improves student motivation, attainment and productivity, creates more wellrounded individuals, and reduces the need for disciplinary intervention. Unlike preparing students for a shorter-term goal like their next assessment, providing students with education and facilities linked to wellbeing and mental health helps foster individuals who benefit from improved health, creativity, work prospects, happiness, and better relationships with others. At Queen Ethelburga’s (QE), good mental health and wellbeing for their whole community is the norm, at every level. Sta have a thorough understanding of the holistic support needed, which means students get the very best support. One of QE’s goals was for students to take as much ownership of their own mental health, as well as that of their peers, as opposed to it

AUSTEN & TURNER

Harewood House prepares to launch an exhibition celebrating two cultural icons

Harewood House Trust is marking 250 years of novelist Jane Austen (1775-1817) and painter Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851) with the exhibition

‘Austen and Turner: A Country House Encounter’, which opens on 2nd May. Two contemporary awardwinning creatives have been commissioned to reflect on Austen’s and Turner’s legacies in response to artworks, manuscripts and historical objects that bring Austen and Turner together for the first time.

Visual artist Lela Harris will produce a new work inspired by the literary world of Jane Austen, and poet and performer Rommi Smith becomes Harewood’s Writer in Residence, reflecting and responding to the themes of the exhibition through poetic form. Austen and Turner is a significant collaborative exhibition and research project between Harewood House Trust and the Centre for Eighteenth Century Studies at the University of York, with advice from independent curatorial consultant, Jade Foster.

Lela Harris says: “I love country houses and sometimes like to imagine that I’m a time-travelling artist, exploring, researching and being immersed in their collections and archives. I’m enjoying peeping behind the curtains of Harewood, exploring the often overlooked histories of the people who shaped the house and its objects. It’s a unique opportunity to examine the house’s historical links to colonialism and how these connections shape our experience of Harewood today.

“I’m an admirer of Turner’s landscapes and I have been surprised and delighted by his figurative watercolours, shown in this new exhibition, they provide a fascinating insight into how he makes

AUSTEN

sense of the people he’s met and their surroundings. I am also a huge Austen fan, having read all the novels in my teenage years, so I’m excited to learn more about her as a person, writer and activist.”

Rommi Smith adds: “I have lived and worked in Leeds for over 30 years. I am thrilled to be Writer in Residence for Harewood House, specifically for the Austen and Turner exhibition. The exhibition begins with a provocation: ‘what if…’ and invites us to consider the ‘conversation’ between Jane Austen and JMW Turner. As much as the exhibition is one of exhibits, it is one of voices. As a poet and theatre-maker, I am fascinated by voices and what they have to say. And as an archival researcher, I am interested by ghosts – the voices of the past and how they speak to us in the present tense.”
