YORKSHIRE YATTER

Lisa Byrne visits the City of Culture to enjoy good food and a host of attractions

Ihave a horrendous confession to make. Despite having lived in Yorkshire for most of my life, I’ve never been to Bradford. The closest I have come to the city is Thornton, due to my obsession with the town being the birthplace of the Brontës. But as Bradford has been hailed as UK’s City of Culture 2025, I decided to organise a trip to this West Yorkshire city, famed for its textile mills, incredible curry houses and being the world’s first UNESCO City of Film. Together with college friends, we booked into the Leonardo Hotel, which is in a prime location right beside Centenary Square. Sta were utterly charming

and willing to bend over backwards to help, especially the manager Suliman.

After leaving our sparklingly clean bedroom, we ventured out into the freezing night to indulge in our first ever authentic Bradford curry.

WONDERLAB AT THE NATIONAL SCIENCE AND MEDIA MUSEUM

Having heard lots of incredible reviews we dined at MyLahore Restaurant, which is so famous even HRH Prince William is a fan. The place was heaving with a long queue gathered outside even though it had just opened. We feasted on an array of delicious dishes with lamb handi (cooked on the bone in sublime spices), succulent mixed grill and Korean crispy cauliflower being a trio of winning dishes. Word of warning, alcohol is not served at MyLahore, but to be honest, the food is so delicious you completely forget about your usual goblet of Malbec.

However, our sobriety was but a brief a air, as we soon stumbled upon the atmospheric City Vaults in Hustlegate to enjoy a few night caps.

There’s so much to do in Bradford, from its Industrial Museum, the gem that is Lister Park with a boating lake and art gallery to the National Science and Media Museum. After bidding what I hope will be a very brief adieu to this delightful gem of a city I aim to head back very soon to what is definitely one of the friendliest cities in the country.

H F ON THE

Yorkshire’s Francesca Cumani is one of the faces of ITV’s racing coverage. With the flat season due to start, Absolutely finds out more about a life centred around horses

Q Did your love of horses develop from an early age?

A Yes, I was born into a very horsey environment, and I think sometimes that can make you go one of two ways, you either love it or resent it. But for me, there was always love for horses, and I just couldn’t wait to be around them.

Q Did you always feel like you were going to go into a career that involved horses?

A I knew I always wanted to do something with horses. The slight problem was that I always liked the hands on element. So if I could, I would be with horses practically, physically every day. But in terms of careers in that field, they’re fairly limited. So I never really knew exactly what I was going to do, and I was lucky enough to come upon the broadcasting side of horse racing, kind of by accident, and it’s been great because it’s allowed me to stay in the industry. I get to go to the best race

meetings all around the world and get paid to talk about it. So I’m incredibly lucky.

Q What were you doing before your broadcast career took o ?

A A mishmash of a few di erent things. I studied languages at university. My dad’s Italian, so I grew up with Italian, and then I did French and Spanish at university. I was never going to be an interpreter or work for the UN, but I just thought, I can kind of do languages, so I’ll do that and see what happens. Then I randomly was doing a bit of work in Kenya and a bit in Argentina, always with horses, working on horseback safaris, mostly, whilst also doing bits and pieces at home with the stables. Then it was whilst I was traveling horses to race in Australia that the TV opportunity came up.

Q How would you say your TV career has evolved since?

A I suppose organically, you would say. I

never imagined I would have a career in TV, and I never had any formal training, so I very much had to learn on the go.

It was a bit of a strange one, because my very first TV gig was part of the presentation team for the Melbourne Cup in Australia, which is one of the biggest jobs you can have on TV in the horse racing world. So thrown in at the deep end slightly. I had to make the most of it and learn on my feet.

Then I got a job with CNN International presenting a kind of magazine style show all around the world about the biggest race meetings in di erent countries. I did that for about four years, and then was doing more in Australia, before the opportunity with ITV came up, which is why I ended up coming back to England and settling here.

I’ve been lucky that di erent opportunities have presented themselves, and kept taking them and seeing where it went.

Q What do you love most about presenting horse racing?

A The racing! Watching the best horses take on the best horses at some of the best race courses is just a real treat. The thrill of the action, the beauty of the thoroughbred, the adrenaline that goes with it. It’s something that once you experience and fall in love with, it’s hard to get away from.

Q What is it like to be one of the faces of Royal Ascot?

A Royal Ascot is obviously the pinnacle of the flat season in England. It’s a massive honour to be part of it, to be part of the ITV broadcast team. Ascot also is a lot more than just racing. There’s the big fashion element, as everybody knows, and the social element. So, it’s important to try and encapsulate all of those di erent things. It’s a big international meeting as well. So it’s great bringing together all the di erent horses from around the world.

Q How do you think the horse racing industry has changed since you joined it?

A Well, it has become a more global sport. There are a lot of horses racing from all

around the world and also being sold all around the world. So that’s an element that’s grown during my time in the sport.

I suppose what’s always changing is the main players involved. So the big owners, the really powerful breeding operations, and, to an extent, trainers as well. You get the older generation retiring and making way for the younger ones, which is also relevant with the jockeys. So I suppose progression and renewal has been the main one.

Q How long have you lived in Yorkshire?

A I live half an hour north of York, in North Yorkshire, and it’s been nearly two years now. I love the variety, it has so much to o er.

York itself is an amazing city. It’s brilliant to visit. It’s great to go out in, it’s got some great restaurants and I love walking around the city walls. That’s a good outing.

But then I’m more of a countryside person, so for me, it’s the big open spaces, it’s the ability to take my horse and go and find some great rides in the countryside. Then it’s got a brilliant coastline as well. So I have done a few random things, like cli jumping in Bamburgh.

Q Are there any spots in Yorkshire that you particularly love?

A We go often to Castle Howard, which is near where we live. They’ve got a great adventure playground for the kids, and it’s a beautiful place. It’s also got some good bridal paths around it. So I quite like taking my horse and going for a charge around. I love the coast. I had an Australian friend of mine visiting, and I was like, ‘I know, let’s go to the beach’. And then when we were nearly there I realised, ‘why am I taking an Australian to the beach in Yorkshire?’ We had a lovely time, but she was a bit shocked when I went swimming.

On Saturday, I am going on a big ride on the Moors with some friends. A big ride slash pub crawl on horseback. We’ve got a pub called The Star in Harome booked, which is a bit of a favourite spot as well. But there’s still loads I want to discover in Yorkshire, it’s a big old place.

Q Finally, what does 2025 hold in store for you?

A A house renovation, which is starting imminently. I have a work trip to Miami in a couple of weeks time doing a few bits for the Pegasus World Cup. Then the flat season kicks o at the end of April for me, and it’s pretty full on work wise, until I go to the Melbourne Cup in November. Things settle down a bit more over the winter for me. Aside from all of that, keeping the three children alive and happy and trying to get this house in order.

MUM’S the WORD

Comedy vocalist Siobhan Phillips is currently starring in a UK tour of Rita, Sue & Bob Too! She tells Absolutely about the attraction of hitting the road, but why Yorkshire will always be home

Plenty has happened since Siobhan Phillips last appeared within the pages of Absolutely Yorkshire, but not all good.

“Unfortunately my Dad died in November 2022,” she says quietly. “He was my biggest fan and it’s been the worst experience losing him.”

His belief in his daughter was unstinting, driving Siobhan to gig after gig when she first set out to take to the stage and impress all comers with her vocal talents. We can only imagine what he must have felt when Siobhan hit the big time thanks to Britain’s Got Talent in 2019 and her hilarious songs

about being a new mother. “It seems like a lifetime ago now,” she exclaims about BGT and reaching the grand final. “Work wise things are good and I have a great balance between time at home with family and time on the road. I’m very lucky to juggle the two like I do with lots of help from family and friends who are ultimately the most precious things in my life.”

When we last spoke to Siobhan, she was preparing to hit the road with her unique blend of comedy and singing, but this time round the reason for this chat is for something altogether di erent. The smash hit stage version of cult classic comedy Rita, Sue & Bob Too! is currently on a new 10-week nationwide tour. TV favourite

Jake Quickenden heads the cast as Bob, with Siobhan taking on the role as Mum.

“Firstly, the fact it’s set in Yorkshire, written by Andrea Dunbar, herself a Yorkshire lass, was a big draw for me,” Siobhan says on the attraction. “Secondly, as a solo artist I quite fancied the camaraderie which being in a cast creates. And thirdly, I get to see Jake Quickenden’s magnificent gluteus maximus on a nightly basis – who could possibly turn that opportunity down?!”

Andrea Dunbar’s hilarious and gritty tale of love, lust and tested friendships is based on the 1987 British film and features a brilliantly funny script along with all the best 80s music, taking audiences on a riotous trip down memory lane through this cult classic.

Rita and Sue are two working class girls from a run-down council estate who are about to finish their final year at school. In their spare time, they earn money babysitting for married couple Bob and Michelle. Behind Michelle’s back, Bob embarks on an a air with both Rita and Sue, who take it in turns with him in his car in the countryside. Michelle eventually finds out and leaves lothario Bob. When Bob later develops a preference for Rita, the two girls fall out, but when Sue ends up in an abusive relationship, the trio are reunited.

Was Siobhan a fan of the film? “I was very young when it was released. I remember stumbling across it one night by accident, and being very shocked at the content! It caused such a stir and everyone seemed to be talking about it. At school all the kids would sing the famous song [We're Having a Gang Bang], which didn’t go down well with the teachers in our strict Catholic school! On the surface it’s easy to think it’s risqué and tawdry, but if you chip away it’s actually a political study of 1980s Britain covering issues such as female empowerment, economic inequality, domestic violence, adultery and teenage pregnancy. Which sounds rather depressing, except the way it’s written there’s lashings of humour thrown in.”

plan career wise. In an industry like this it’s better to be spontaneous and consider all the o ers that come in. That said, it would be a dream to get a role in a soap like Coronation Street or Emmerdale – that would be great! Since having my daughter I’m much less ambitious than I was in my younger years. I deliberately chose to do this project to take myself out of my comfort zone doing some straight acting as opposed to music, to show her that it’s good to challenge yourself and people’s perception of you.”

She admits to missing her daughter – and hubby and dog too – when touring, but not the housework, adding that she is “Yorkshire and proud. I’ll never stray far from our beloved county. I’ve travelled all over the world, but there’s no place like home”. But more travelling is on the horizon. “I’m constantly writing new songs which I perform at my gigs – after the Rita, Sue & Bob Too! tour I have some cruise ship gigs lined up, which are massively fun and give me lots of opportunity to try out my new material. The ships are a thriving hotbed of entertainment and

Has Siobhan been able to bring her own personality to the role of Mum? “Yes, to a certain degree,” she considers. “She’s a character most of us can relate to. I’m channelling my inner fish wife, crossed with the late, great Liz Dawn in her alter ego of Vera Duckworth. She’s very harsh on the outside, but her daughter Sue is her pride and joy. She’s somewhat downtrodden and stuck in a loveless marriage. But she puts on a brave face and faces the world head on hiding behind a potty mouth and a mean right hook!”

From the outside, Mum looks like the next stage of a career evolution, but Siobhan doesn’t see it like that. “I never make a

whilst they previously had a reputation for being cheesy and lounge-lizard dwellings, they are now frequented by the movers and shakers, both passenger and act wise.”

But, for now, all of Siobhan’s focus is on Rita, Sue & Bob Too! and she knows there’s one person who would have absolutely loved her performance. “On opening night I just wanted to ring my Dad, I don’t think I’ll ever stop feeling that way. I know he’d be proud, but he’d definitely be telling me o for all the bad language I use in the show… As did my Mum when she came to watch!”

NATURAL CONNECTIONS

National Science and Media Museum are staging an unmissable experience as part of Bradford 2025

The National Science and Media Museum will unveil its most cutting-edge experience yet, inviting visitors to ‘come and see what you’re made of’.

Open to the public from Thursday 3rd April until February 2026, YOU:MATTER is a spectacular immersive installation at the National Science and Media Museum created by renowned artist collective Marshmallow Laser Feast (MLF), commissioned for Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture. Visitors can take

an unforgettable trip discovering their connection to the universe, exploring the web of relationships that bond people and the natural world together.

YOU:MATTER inspires visitors to explore how everything in our universe can be traced back to the same cosmic explosion. This experience shows the Big Bang wasn’t just a one-time thing – it’s still banging, right at the heart of Bradford and coursing through us and our surroundings.

From the stars above to each living cell, the technologies behind this extraordinary experience make the invisible visible.

The installation playfully shows how each ingredient of life, large or small, is

constructed from the same basic building blocks as our universe. As their journey unfolds, visitors see how the human body is inextricably linked to water, air and sunlight through the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat. These ideas come to life through a series of immersive sound and video installations, revealing the deep connections between our bodies, the planet and the wider universe. Visitors shift perspectives – from witnessing the Earth breathing through data from NASA to following the journey of a single drop of water. Interactive installations invite audiences to breathe life into a digital

forest, while a playful selfie station places them within the vast web of biodiversity. These powerful combinations of immersive sound, video and real-time interactivity reflect the National Science and Media Museum’s mission to explore how media and technology shape our understanding of the world – making the invisible, visible.

Marshmallow Laser Feast believes in the power of stories to tickle senses and shift perceptions. Blurring the boundaries between art, immersive experiences, XR and film, their work takes people on multisensory journeys where imagination and information collide. Their work is grounded in research and designed to carve out space to expose, explore and expand our relationship with the living world. They have exhibited internationally at institutions including ACMI, Barbican Centre, YCAM, DDB Seoul, Sundance Film Festival, Cannes Film Festival, Factory International, Quartier des Spectacles, SXSW, Saatchi Gallery and Lisbon Architectural Triennale.

Shanaz Gulzar, Creative Director at Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture, says: "We’re pleased to be collaborating with the National Science and Media Museum and Marshmallow Laser Feast on this exciting and thought-provoking installation that invites audiences to discover the profound connections between the universe and everyday life. Through immersive technology and Marshmallow Laser Feast’s innovative thinking, YOU:MATTER is the story of Bradford’s people and their place in the cosmos."

Commenting on the installation, Jo Quinton-Tulloch, Director at the National Science and Media Museum, adds:

“We are super excited to be launching YOU:MATTER, created especially for Bradford 2025. This amazing

“It takes visitors on an unforgettable journey to explore their connection to the cosmos”

digital experience takes visitors on an unforgettable journey to explore their connection to the cosmos. We hope it sparks curiosity and leaves people with a renewed sense of wonder about their place in the universe long after they leave.”

Robin McNicholas, co-founder and Creative Director, MLF, says:

“YOU:MATTER is an invitation to see yourself as part of something vast – woven from the same cosmic fabric as the stars, the trees and the air we breathe. This experience reveals the hidden choreography of life’s building blocks, from the atomic scale to the planetary. We want visitors to feel their connection to the past, present and future – not just as individuals, but as part of an ongoing story that stretches across time and space. YOU:MATTER is a reminder that you are not separate from the cosmos, but an extension of its story.”

The National Science and Media Museum in Bradford, West Yorkshire, opened in 1983, and has since become one of the most visited UK museums outside London. It draws on more than three million objects from its national collection to explore the science and culture of image and sound technologies, and their impact on our lives.

The museum creates special exhibitions, interactive galleries and activities for families and adults, and is home to Pictureville, Yorkshire’s biggest independent cinema with three screens including Europe’s first IMAX and the only public Cinerama venue in the world.

The National Science and Media Museum reopened on 8th January 2025, following a £6m once in a generation transformation.

Haydon Bottomley, Saleroom Manager at Hutchinson Scott Auctioneers in Skipton, takes us behind the scenes of a business to treasure

Q Can you give us a potted history of Hutchinson Scott?

BIG

Ahmed Abdalla, head chef of Legacy at The Grand, York, on Yorkshire’s fabulous produce, spring joy and huge ambitions

Ahmed Abdalla heads up the kitchen brigade at The Grand, York’s fine dining restaurant, Legacy. Following its opening in autumn 2022, Ahmed has already led the restaurant to being featured in The Telegraph’s ‘14 Best Restaurants in York’ list and has been recognised by Michelin as one of their favourites. Absolutely headed to the luxury hotel to meet him and find out more.

Q What was your relationship like with food during your childhood?

A As any child, I enjoyed food that was tasty and convenient. I grew up with three sisters and a mum who cooked lots of delicious meals, often classic family favourites like lasagne, curries and stews. One of my sisters was really into baking as I was growing up and bought herself some baking equipment. I clearly remember seeing the Kenwood mixer being used to make amazing cakes and treats. In my spare time, I loved to watch cooking programmes on TV –Nigella Lawson was a firm favourite.

Q When did you first start to pick up an interest in cooking?

A After leaving school I went to college to do hospitality and catering, I worked the 2012 Olympics in the Olympic village – catering for the Olympians and sta , as a night chef. During my college years I also had work experience in the Baftas kitchen, at Wembley and Ascot. These opportunities all gave me first-hand experience of seeing other established chefs and individuals who I saw as experts in their field. My college tutors were so supportive and had a wealth of knowledge, but seeing professionals in action was so inspiring and refreshing.

Q Can you remember the first dish or meal you created from scratch?

A I can, yes! It was actually in 2010, I made a leek and potato soup at college and was so proud of it, topped with some croutons that I had made, perfectly placed in the centre of the dish. No herb oil in sight!

Q When did cooking become a viable career option for you?

A During my time working at the Olympics. I experienced a snapshot of what a career in cooking could look like.

AHMED ABDALLA

It was at this time that I really fell in love with the idea of pursuing cooking. When I first told my mother that I wanted to be a chef she called my father and she said, “you need to speak to your son, he wants to cook for a living”. My father failed to dissuade me, and here I am!

Q What was the biggest thing you learnt in the early days of your career?

A I would say listening, not just to instruction and briefing etc, but taking in what was going on around me. Also, listening to advice and feedback and using these words constructively to further my skill and ultimately my food. Finally, learning to be resilient in the kitchen; if something isn’t working, be honest and start again or take learning for the future.

Q What was the first Yorkshire restaurant you worked in? And was it any di erent to where you had been before?

A This was at The Parsonage in 2016, and it was massively di erent to where I had worked previously. The role itself was as a commis chef – I would have to take care of desserts, afternoon tea

“The Grand holds so much character and history”

and larder station, whereas previous experience was centred around catering on masse. In this position I had to take accountability for my work, which made it di erent to any role I had done before –this meant I took great pride in my work.

Q What do you make of the restaurant scene across Yorkshire?

A Ever-growing and booming. There are so many lovely independent restaurants, bakeries and wine bars. Some of my personal favourites being Pairings, Robinson’s and Skosh.

“I love spicy things, it really adds an interesting element to a dish”

Q What was the attraction of working at The Grand, York?

A I love that The Grand holds so much character and history of the city in the building itself, it is a real source of so much inspiration. Not to mention, the amazing people we work with: suppliers, producers and our own team. The Grand’s team is diverse and that’s a real strength. With diversity, we all approach problems di erently so we get incredibly creative and become very close-knit working towards the same goal.

Q What are you looking to achieve with the cooking at Legacy?

A Showcasing our county’s exceptional produce is at the helm of the food, but honouring Yorkshire’s pivotal moments and people in history through the tasting menu journey is key for us. We are proud of our Yorkshire heritage and the beautiful produce that comes from within the region. We look to utilise produce as locally as we can, without compromise on quality. We use preserving methods across the menu to make the most of the seasonal produce throughout the year.

Q As we head into spring, can you give us an idea of some of the dishes we may be able to enjoy?

A As we come into the spring months, naturally we will be using beautiful

Yorkshire lamb and Wye Valley asparagus. At home, at this time of year, I love to elevate a simple pasta dish with some punchy homemade wild garlic pesto.

Q Are there certain ingredients you can’t get enough of right now?

A Scotch Bonnet: I love spicy things. It really adds an interesting element to a dish. Five beans: a cupboard staple in my opinion. Incredibly versatile, great in a salad or even in a hearty stew. Venison: perfect at this time of the year, I really do enjoy cooking it.

Q How does it feel to see Legacy recognised with industry accolades?

A It’s fantastic to see Legacy being recognised. It’s a great source of motivation, we are very much hoping to do the city proud – we want to champion York and the region as much as possible.

Q What ambitions do you still have for it?

A Naturally, I’d love to see a lovely red star and to continue to be recognised by industry experts and accolades. Of course, we absolutely want to continue to provide exceptional dining experiences for foodies across the nation. It’s so nice to see our guests return time and time again to experience di erent iterations of the season. This is just the beginning!

Dunesforde

Yorkshire’s hidden gem for wine lovers

Most people wouldn’t look at the rolling Yorkshire countryside and think, “Perfect spot for a vineyard,” but the Townsend family did exactly that. In 2016, they planted 6,000 vines on four acres of land, determined to prove that great English wine isn’t just a southern a air. Fast-forward a few years, and Dunesforde Vineyard has become a northern powerhouse, producing elegant, cool-climate wines that challenge everything you thought you knew about Yorkshire and viticulture.

Specialising in early-ripening varieties like Bacchus, Solaris, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Noir Précoce, Dunesforde has turned its cooler climate into an advantage, crafting wines with bright acidity, delicate aromatics, and a real sense of place. And it’s not just local pride talking — their Pinot Gris 2022 won both a gold medal and the Best Single Varietal White Trophy at the WineGB Awards 2024, making history as Yorkshire’s first-ever wine to receive the accolade.

Beyond the bottles, Dunesforde o ers one of the most charming tasting experiences in the region. Their beautifully restored barn doubles as a stylish tasting room, where visitors can sip their way through the range while soaking in the vineyard’s story — all under the watchful gaze of a dramatic 27-foot mural of Roman Aldborough, a nod to Yorkshire’s (surprisingly long!) winemaking history. And with their vineyard terrace and guided tours reopening from 11th April, there’s no better time to visit, grab a glass, and toast to the start of the season.

Hull & Heritage

HOUSEOFTUYI is a fashion brand like no other, blending tradition and modernity. Following on from a successful fashion show in January, Fashion Through The Lens of Art, founder Seguntuyi Onakoya explains his ambitions for the business

In a historic moment for Hull’s creative scene, HOUSEOFTUYI made an unforgettable debut with its first-ever runway show, seamlessly blending art and fashion in a groundbreaking collaboration with Ferens Art Gallery. This pioneering event, the first of its kind in Hull, was designed to unite the gallery with its surrounding community by providing a platform for creatives to express their artistry. As the event’s headliner, HOUSEOFTUYI demonstrated its commitment to community and inclusivity, opening the stage to fellow fashion designers and emerging talents. Featuring Designers Zainab Kolawole (StyledByZK), Hollie Haughin (HollieLesleyHaughin), and Tolu Olafimihan (Gnation), who took to social media to express their gratitude for HOUSEOFTUYI’s growing influence and unwavering support in amplifying fashion design within Hull’s creative ecosystem. With a sold-out audience of over 120 attendees, the show not only set a new benchmark for Ferens Art Gallery, but also established a blueprint for future collaborations, reinforcing the city’s potential as a thriving hub for art, culture, and fashion. We chatted to the founder to find out more.

Q Your work has been recognized for its innovative approach. How has industry recognition and feedback influenced your journey in fashion?

A Industry recognition has been instrumental in shaping my journey. Over the years, my designs have gained attention from leading fashion figures, media outlets, and cultural institutions. Having my work showcased on platforms such as Fashion Finest Africa and international fashion exhibitions has reinforced my commitment to pushing creative boundaries. The feedback I receive – whether from industry professionals, stylists, or clients –continually informs my approach, helping me refine my craftsmanship and adapt to emerging trends.

CATWALK DESIGN FROM THE RECENT FASHION SHOW

Q Your designs are known for their unique craftsmanship. What specific elements set HOUSEOFTUYI apart from other brands, and how has the industry responded to your work?

A What sets HOUSEOFTUYI apart is the meticulous attention to detail, the seamless blend of heritage and contemporary aesthetics, and the emphasis on craftsmanship. I experiment with textures, intricate embroidery, and unconventional silhouettes to redefine modern fashion. This approach has earned recognition from fashion insiders, with stylists, editors, and creative directors praising the distinctiveness of my work.

Q Breaking into the fashion industry can be challenging. What were the biggest obstacles in establishing HOUSEOFTUYI, and how has your work been acknowledged by industry professionals?

A One of the biggest challenges was gaining visibility and access to the right networks. Fashion is highly competitive, and without strategic industry connections, it can

be di cult to gain traction. However, through perseverance and high-profile collaborations, my work has been featured in major events and media outlets. Recognition from industry leaders and partnerships with cultural institutions like Hull City Council have further validated my contributions to the fashion landscape.

Q How has your work been received by the public, fashion insiders, and media since launching? Are there any standout moments that validated your creative direction?

A The response has been overwhelmingly positive. From being worn by notable figures to being featured in industry conversations, HOUSEOFTUYI has continued to resonate with diverse audiences. A standout moment was my first runway show in Hull, which sold out in just three weeks. The event created significant industry buzz, attracting key players from the UK fashion scene, including representatives from York Fashion Week.

Q Can you share some of your latest designs for the season and any notable responses they have received?

A This season, I am exploring a fusion of structured tailoring and fluid draping, with a strong emphasis on handwoven fabrics and metallic accents. One of my standout pieces – a hand-embroidered structured gown inspired by African and Jamaican tailoring work for the Ferens Art Gallery preview show – has garnered attention from stylists and cultural curators, further cementing HOUSEOFTUYI as a brand that bridges tradition and modernity.

Q As an internationally recognized designer, how do you envision HOUSEOFTUYI growing in the future, and what impact do you hope to have on the global fashion industry?

A I envision HOUSEOFTUYI expanding into international markets, establishing flagship stores, and collaborating with global designers to promote cross-cultural

“HULL HAS PROVIDED AN INCREDIBLE PLATFORM FOR ARTISTIC COLLABORATION”

fashion exchange. Beyond commercial success, my goal is to champion representation and inclusivity in fashion, ensuring that African-inspired aesthetics have a lasting impact on the global stage.

Q How has living and working in Hull influenced your creative process, and what unique opportunities has the UK fashion scene provided that were not available in Nigeria?

A Hull has provided an incredible platform for artistic collaboration and exposure to new creative communities. Unlike Nigeria, where access to global fashion institutions is limited, the UK o ers direct engagement with industry pioneers, leading fashion councils, and international fashion weeks. My involvement with Hull City Council and upcoming projects, including mentorship programs and exhibitions, has allowed me to contribute to the UK’s cultural landscape while expanding my professional reach.

EXPERT MEET THE

Karen Betts is a titan in the world of permanent makeup, a true pioneer who has transformed countless lives. Absolutely meets her

Q Were you always destined to have a career in the beauty industry?

A I knew from a very young age I would make a di erence. Having seen first-hand the transformative power of permanent makeup – particularly for those with medical conditions – I was determined to be a leader in my field. It was a natural transition for me to build my Nouveau Lashes, LVL & HD Brows brands and empower people to feel confident in themselves.

Q What kind of things were you doing when you started out in a small Yorkshire beauty salon?

A I started as a mobile hairdresser at 15, at one point I even applied hair extensions to a horse’s tail! When I opened my salon, I rented a room to a tattoo artist; this is what sparked my interest in permanent makeup.

Q What inspired you to dive deeper into Permanent Makeup?

A One of my closest friends developed breast cancer. I knew I wanted to do something to help her regain the confidence she had lost. I travelled to the US and embarked on a mission to learn advanced permanent makeup and medical tattoo techniques. I’m still learning to this day.

Q When launching your business, what did you want to o er from day one?

A High-quality, innovative and naturallooking permanent makeup treatments.

Q What services do you o er?

A Permanent brow, eyeliner and lip enhancements for both men and women. Advanced medical tattooing for those with scars, burns, alopecia, hair loss, areola loss and a laser correction for removing brow pigment and small body tattoos.

Q Can you tell us about 1 or 2 case studies that really highlight what you can o er?

A If you visit my website (karenbetts. com/clients) or download my brochure (karenbetts.com/brochurerequest) you’ll see some genuine client transformations. Mark stands out to me as he spent over 20 years hiding his lack of brows behind glasses – permanent makeup changed his life. Carly’s story was very emotional, she lost her brows at 11 due to Alopecia Areata. In her words she found our treatment ‘totally inspiring’.

Q What does award recognition mean to you?

A I appreciate receiving awards from this wonderful industry, but more meaningful to me is when a client walks into one of our clinics feeling self-conscious, unable to find their smile – and after an hour in our hands, they beam from ear to ear. That means the world, not just to me, but to every member of my incredible team.

Q How do you see the future of your business evolving?

A I will spend my life innovating to ensure the safest, industry leading pigments, tools and advanced techniques.

How SpineArt and the man behind it, Dr Dan Fagan, can o er treatment to cure all manner of back and spine issues

Dr Dan Fagan FRCS is a leading consultant spinal surgeon with over 25 years’ experience based in Yorkshire and the North East, who specialises in adult degenerative spinal conditions and minimally invasive spinal surgery. His work is focused at Circle Health Woodlands Hospital and Nu eld Tees Hospital.

He created his practice, SpineArt, in 2010 to help people with spinal problems with the empathy, consideration, and advanced techniques that successful treatment of these conditions demand. This is summed up by Dr Fagan as “choosing the right operation for the right condition at the right time” for his patients.

“From the first point of contact with us, we see people quickly and no referral is necessary,” he explains. “Bev, my practice

manager, will guide patients through the process, and we have access to MRI scans and tests done elsewhere in the country which can be easily transferred. This is all underpinned by a modern electronic booking and records system making your patient journey as seamless as possible.” Safety and excellence is very important in your experience with SpineArt. Dr Fagan is a respected clinical leader and has been an advisor for the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE). He is currently a Clinical Chairman at Circle Health Group, which involves clinical service and governance development for spinal services at national level in his role as Chairman of the Spinal Steering Group. More recently he has completed the Circle Health Senior Leadership course and has a postgraduate degree in Executive Management from Liverpool Business School.

“There are some common misconceptions in the treatment of back pain and sciatica, the commonest of which is that continued exercise is beneficial and can cure all cases,” Dr Fagan continues. “Often back pain and sciatica gets better naturally within 6 to 12 weeks, but beyond that time exercise and even walking can cause persistent or worsening symptoms. Weight bearing exercise and the heel strike when walking or running causes axial impact force which radiates up the leg to the spine and causes pain in an inflamed disc or nerve root. In my practice, we use specific exercise and rehabilitation techniques to minimise spinal pain and inflammation, in conjunction with interventional treatment.”

People who have already been seen by a physiotherapist for their pain and might be waiting for an appointment with their GP, or on the waiting list for an NHS consultation, may be interested in finding out how the advances in spine surgery can help them to get back to a full life.

“People who have sciatica and back pain need a diagnosis,” Dr Fagan states. “There are di erent reasons for the pain and a range of di erent treatments. We have the equipment and the expertise, right here at Circle Woodlands, to be able to o er patients the most cutting-edge treatment for conditions that can prevent them living their best lives.

“In my practice we can solve all manner of spinal conditions including neck pain due to spondylosis (or wear and tear), trapped nerves in the neck, lumbar spinal pain and sciatica due to a slipped disc, and osteoporotic fractures in older patients or impaction fractures in championship jockeys and sportsmen.”

If you would like to arrange a consultation, please contact Beverley Johnston on 07539330360 or email secretary@ spineart.org. For more information or to book online, visit spineart.org

A Timeless Approach to Kitchen Design

Meticulously Made

Jolly Kitchens, Richmond,
“The kitchen of course was the most important area to change”
SHAUN RANKIN PICTURED IN HIS NEW KITCHEN

CHEF’S TABLE

Shaun Rankin is hugely acclaimed in the restaurant industry for his work at Grantley Hall, and now he has a kitchen at home to match that expertise. Absolutely finds out more

Nestled in the North Yorkshire Wensleydale village of East Witton, Michelin-starred chef

Shaun Rankin’s farmhouse kitchen has been transformed by The Main Company into a streamlined, Scandiinspired space. Characterised by modern, clean lines, minimal cupboards, and pale, hand-finished oak cabinetry, the new kitchen and connecting dining area feels calm and inviting, providing the perfect balance between modern and Scandi-rustic.

Starting with the equipment as the base for the design, the space brings together a calm palette of neutrals, pale oak and a touch of colour. An e ortless blend of beauty and function with the calming essence of Scandinavian-inspired aesthetics, the Reena Simon x The Main Company range was selected to bring a comforting, yet contemporary tactility to this farmhouse kitchen. The oak on the cabinetry and walls takes centre stage, complemented by a palette of warm grey, a hint of teal and customised Corston Architectural black hardware, whilst reeded glass-fronted cabinets and Moorland Fog Caesarstone worktops add a touch of elegance. Featuring two intelligent V-ZUG ovens as well as a black mirror-glass wine cooler in the seating area, the kitchen meets the professional chef’s requirements in terms of equipment whilst remaining welcoming and homely. A conscious choice of no tiles and the minimal cupboard arrangement demonstrate a wonderful balance between superior function and beautiful aesthetics. Wrapping around to a steppeddown dining area, a handmade French oak table was also commissioned from The Main Company, as well as L-shaped banquette seating, completing the informal yet thoughtfully designed feel of the cottage.

Shaun Rankin is a Michelin-starred chef, in charge of his own restaurant at Grantley Hall hotel and spa. He also owns The Blue Lion restaurant in the Yorkshire Dales, situated a short distance from his home in East Witton. He invited Absolutely round to see the new kitchen and explain a bit more about the thought process behind its design.

Q How long have you lived in East Witton for now and what do you love about it?

A We have lived in East Witton for just over a year now. I’ve always loved the area – I first visited about six years ago when I visited Grantley Hall, and I absolutely loved it. I adored the Blue Lion pub which ended up being my local. There is a lovely sense of community, the countryside is fabulous. It’s a great place to be and live, it’s really nice and quiet and full of natural beauty.

Q How would you describe your home?

A It’s an old farmhouse property and is going to need quite a bit of work. The kitchen was of course the most important area for me to change and so has been one of the first parts to be renovated. Our plans are for each room to be individual, but each with a traditional feel. It’s not going to be a modern property, and we’ll be using plenty of wood and natural materials, to really bring the outside in.

Q Do you do all the cooking at home, or do you sometimes put your feet up?

A I do all the cooking!

Q Why was it time for a new kitchen?

A The original kitchen was someone else’s design, it was how they wanted to cook – none of it worked for me. It was set up with an AGA system, and I don’t cook that way, and I didn’t think the floor or the flow worked, so we needed to start again really.

Q Why did you look to The Main Company to transform your kitchen?

A I had met Alex from The Main Company at some events for V-ZUG, who I’m an ambassador for. Since meeting him I’d always looked at his work and the projects The Main Company do and thought they were tremendous, so naturally I thought they would be a good fit for my kitchen. Everything I do and the people I work with is always about supporting locally, and the fact that The Main Company is based around York was of course ideal.

Q What was the brief you gave to them?

A In terms of a brief, I wanted the kitchen to be classic in its right and not too modern. Materials were very important, so we looked at the Scandi approach, which is where the Reena Simon x The Main Company collection came into it. I wanted to incorporate a mixture of paints, woods and textures. The main brief, really, was about how the kitchen flows, starting with the list of equipment that I wanted to include and where I wanted it, and then the design came together around that.

Q What was incorporated to give it a professional chef’s kitchen feel?

A Really it comes down to the layout and the design, with the main part being the flow. For a kitchen space to flow well (both at home and in a professional setting) it’s about putting the right equipment in the right places. It’s all about making cooking simple at home, without too much fuss. You want the workspaces to feel right so that you’re not running around in circles!

Q Why the Scandi-inspired look?

A The property is a farmhouse cottage, and we felt the Scandi-inspired look worked really well with the architecture. When you look out the windows, all you see is wood, trees and fields, so the Scandi feel really works well with the outside in/inside out approach.

Q What little touches do you particularly like?

A It’s the little things for me. Things like the slim jim bins and di erent compartments for waste, storage cupboards built into the island for big equipment like mixers and toasters. This means the kitchen itself is quite minimalistic – I don’t like a cluttered kitchen. Other details like the soft closing drawers, which are lined with aluminium so that the pots don’t scratch

the surface are a wonderful touch, and of course the nice big larder cupboard providing even more storage!

Q How did you approach the design of the dining area?

A We wanted to use that area as an entertaining space, so we opted to have the wine fridge on that side. It feels like you’re still connected to the kitchen, but just outside it, perfect for dining and entertaining. Having a table custom-made by The Main Company meant that we could accommodate 4-6 for everyday use, but then extend to have up to 8-12 guests when we entertain.

Q How happy are you with the final outcome?

A Very happy. More than I could have wanted. It’s fantastic, it’s just a great kitchen.

Q How has 2025 started in your restaurants and what are your hopes for the rest of the year?

A It’s started really well! January and February are always pretty tricky generally, but it has been good. I’m looking forward to the seasonal changes and the warmer weather. It means we can start growing some produce and getting some local produce back into the environment, it will be nice to use some lighter vegetables again.

The

of furniture ART

How the right furnishings can transform your space

Traditionally art is comprised of paintings and sculptures. However, as the worlds of art, design and, to an extent, fashion continue to merge, furniture is no longer purely viewed as a functional item.

At Greycaine we are seeing a shift in consumer needs; whilst a piece of furniture is still required for its functionality, design has evolved, and furniture is becoming a true piece of art. We know art has the power to transform a space, but so does great furniture which can really anchor the interior design of a room. This is particularly apparent in bigger pieces such as a statement sofa or even a dining table which will take centre stage and become the focal point. Individuality and creativity are imperative. The buyer wants to reflect their style and when making a considered purchase, consumers want to feel like they are buying a unique piece rather than something widely available. Furniture, like the art we choose for our home, is extremely personal and an extension of our personality which enables homeowners to express their individual tastes. This is why we are also seeing a spike in bespoke joinery requests particularly

in relation to wardrobes, as they can be crafted to exact requirements and aesthetic preference.

The artistry in furniture lies in its ability to balance form and function, o ering a piece that’s both visually captivating but also practical. When chosen carefully, a single piece can set the tone for an entire space, commanding the attention it deserves.

Consumers are investing in furniture, purchasing pieces they love, but that are impeccably crafted and ultimately built to last. These are viewed almost as heirloom pieces, beautiful furniture to be enjoyed and taken on a journey either from property to property or passed to future generations to continue to enjoy. Buyers are looking for pieces with longevity, rather than trend led designs. Art often transcends trends, and an iconic piece of furniture will be relevant for years to come.

Greycaine’s Nefele Cloud Sofa epitomises this concept. With its sculptural, cloudlike form, it creates a sense of fluidity and movement away from the traditional, angular sofa designs. It redefines what furniture can be and blurs the lines between design and function, creating a piece of art that goes beyond a traditional sofa. It’s not just a sofa, it’s a statement, a talking point and a centrepiece.

CORINTO TABLE, FROM £16,000
NEFELE CLOUD SOFA, FROM £8,065

The Nefele Cloud sofa is the perfect example of bringing together style but also comfort, to create a functional and elegant piece of furniture. The playful curves and cloud-like design have been perfectly created for ergonomic support as well as visual impact. Crafted from long-pile, bielastic fabric with a three-dimensional texture add to the cloud like design with tactile, soft material used throughout.

Another example of how conventional furniture can redefine the boundaries between function and art is our Corinto Table. Crafted entirely from marble, the elegant Corinto Table is a sculptural masterpiece.

Every element of this piece reflects meticulous attention to detail, from the fluid organic lines and the striking allure of natural stone. This iconic piece can work in any setting, whether placed in a contemporary space such as a living room or a more traditional dining room or even study, it serves as a beautiful centrepiece and becomes an independent piece of art.

“These pieces of furniture are viewed almost as heirloom pieces”

Make a statement

How to integrate statement pieces into your home to work as a piece of art

Allow enough space for the piece to take centre stage, avoid overcrowding or unnecessary clutter which will allow the furniture to work as a piece of art.

Thoughtful Pairing

Complement your furniture with pieces that enhance its artistic qualities. Minimalist coffee tables, textured rugs, and statement lighting can elevate its impact and complement the furniture.

Lighting The right lighting is imperative to art and therefore it is equally important for furniture. Ensure your furniture is appropriately highlighted to showcase its true beauty.

Personal Taste

Buy and enjoy pieces you love and will enjoy using. Depending on the size and purpose, furniture like art can be moved around the house, which can add a fresh perspective to a room.

Patio paving ideas to inspire with The

Tile Company

Gone are the days of grey and uneven slabs with moss growing between them. Now as with the rest of the home, we all want beautiful patio paving ideas – something sleek and sophisticated to reflect our personalities and the many styles of paving out there. The right design could transform your garden to give you more space to entertain, enjoy time with the family and make the summer last longer. And there is no reason you can’t enjoy your new space into the colder months too with the addition of a fire pit, throws and a patio heater.

TGOOD TIMES

Lucy Pittaway’s latest collection is a reason to be happy

he wait is nearly over – Lucy Pittaway’s new collection, Living the Good Life, is available from 4th April. We’ve had a sneak peek at a few pieces, and it’s everything we hoped for. As winter fades away, Lucy’s new work brings a breath of fresh air, radiating joy with colourful flowers and the uplifting spirit of spring. This collection is sure to make you smile. With seven galleries showcasing her art, Lucy has become somewhat of a household name, loved throughout the north and beyond. Today, we’re getting an inside look as we sit down with Lucy to learn more about the artist behind the pastels…

Q How would you describe your new collection?

A Cheerful! It’s an eight piece series celebrating all animals – from furry to feathery and everything in between. Each piece highlights the unique beauty of creatures all around us, some often overlooked.

Q What inspired this collection?

Q Which piece from the new collection is your favourite?

A I’m lucky to be surrounded by nature and animals. This collection is inspired by the countryside around me and the animals featured on The Yorkshire Vet. Watching the vets care for these animals made me appreciate the joy they bring to our lives.

Q Do you have any furry friends?

A Yes! I have a little Jack Russell named Patsy. She loves to snuggle by my feet while I paint and always gives the best welcomes after a long day at the o ce.

Q If Patsy could talk, what would she say about your artwork?

A She’d probably ask why I haven’t made a series all about her!

A ‘Spag and Hetti’. I just love the curly spaghetti-like coats and sooty black faces of this breed of sheep. They have so much character and I loved painting them. I also love being around mountains and lakes, and absolutely love a good view, so this painting is my favourite in the collection.

Q What’s your creative process like?

A I start with an idea but let it evolve as I gather inspiration, often from walks in the countryside with my family. I sketch it out, blending structure with spontaneity. Watching it come to life is one of my favourite parts.

HUDDERSFIELD GRAMMAR SCHOOL

Huddersfield Grammar School inspires children from Nursery right through to age 16. They are a school that explicitly puts character development at the heart of all it does, nurturing every child to become their best self. TO TEACH or not (again) TO TEACH

The Managing Director of BSC Education York writes about revitalising our teaching community

The teacher shortage across the UK has been an issue for several years, but over the last few years this has got steadily more challenging for schools. One of the major setbacks around enticing individuals into the teaching profession centres around conflicting needs and priorities. Schools need (or at least prefer) permanent, full-time teachers, while many teachers coming into the profession are interested in part-time, more flexible, hybrid roles which fit around their lifestyle and family choices. As such, educators are having to work harder to review traditional teaching roles to find ways to meet the changing social norms around employment.

Over the years, the profession of teaching itself has been devalued by many, whether that is as a result of the shift in focus of the

role (ie, combining the academic and pastoral load with increasing administrative work), or pay sector increases that have not, or cannot, be sustained in line with other inflationary increases. If the demands of the role increase, but the financial remuneration fails to keep pace, that naturally leads to a sector shortage. Another possible barrier to entry is around the evolving use of technology and AI in classrooms and expectations around teachers being equipped to deal with mental health in young people. Without adequate training in these areas, many teachers will worry about keeping up with changing teaching and learning techniques.

A WEALTH OF UNTAPPED SKILLS

Yet when we look at the teacher crisis, we usually think of those entering the profession rather than the idea of reentering it, even though the retired sector provides a huge wealth of untapped skills. If a teacher has spent all or most

JENN HARRIS

of their career in the educational sector, it’s fair to say it wasn’t for financial gain. Most educational professionals love what they do and gain a genuine sense of satisfaction from seeing students’ progress. Moving away from that sense of purpose may leave a bit of a void. Many teaching retirees have reported a need to stay actively engaged with society. Likewise, many recently retired teachers can o er our classrooms a wealth of knowledge, with decades of skills and experience (from both inside and outside of the classroom), and they also o er much needed resilience. These skills need to be imparted to our next generation of teachers, while they in turn have so much to share with their older, more experienced counterparts. Returning teachers may be able to run the extra/co-curricular activities and clubs or supervise study groups, support students with additional learning support requirements, or prepare homework. Apart from the altruistic reasons, we cannot ignore the fact that retirement is often not what many dreamed it would be. It may feel lonely, financially unviable, or simply not enjoyable. Perhaps the administrative or management responsibilities contributed to a desire to retire, and now teachers want to come back to simply teach? This could o er a valuable lifeline to schools, colleges and universities, who may discover there is a talent pool available and willing to work part-time, ad-hoc or on fixed and short-

term contracts to fill the gaps left by younger teachers seeking more flexibility.

BRIDGING THE GAP

This is a perfect opportunity to blend experiences and knowledge, with both ends of the teaching spectrum having something to o er the other. Younger teachers can support with learning new technologies (although this is not always an age-related challenge), and teachers with more experience can pass on knowledge of traditional teaching pedagogies. Perhaps a reverse mentoring scheme, where an older teacher is mentored by a younger one, might be a beneficial learning experience for both parties?

Retired teachers returning to the classroom may be the perfect solution for cover teachers, short term absences or specialist sessions, adding variety and richness to the classrooms. This skill is likely to be more a ordable than supply agencies and could o er greater continuity on cover for teachers who are comfortable with occasional or ad hoc work to supplement their income. Perhaps there is also an opportunity for job shares allowing a returning teacher to focus on classroombased activities, with the administrative load picked up by a colleague?

There are a lot of organisations that are focused on supporting the over 55s return to or entering teaching as well as a myriad of other professions (such as NowTeach, 55redefined etc.), along with social media platforms like Facebook

(where almost 40% of users are 45+) and alumni communications. Any attempts to entice teachers back into the profession must have clearly defined roles and responsibilities with well-structured training and development opportunities. Schools need to be prepared to provide the right training for teachers. The benefits of returning must also be clear – such as the upskilling returning to the classroom would o er, helping prepare for an uncertain future combined with the financial benefits. Financial advice and pension planning should be available to everyone. Schools, colleges and universities looking to recruit from older age groups could also publish articles that discuss the non-financial benefits of working into retirement – such as delaying the aging process and preventing social isolation.

OPENING UP CONVERSATIONS

Opening up more doors for teaching opportunities across the board has to be an important consideration for schools. This might mean shifting the dynamic of what teaching looks like today and providing the right training. Having open conversations around the role of the teacher as a facilitator and coach who supports students to develop critical thinking, creativity and problemsolving (and other future skills) rather than imparting knowledge and facts is vital.

S“THE DECISION TO APPOINT A DEDICATED SPEECH AND LANGUAGE THERAPIST WAS AN EASY ONE FOR US"

peech and language development is a key concern for many parents, especially in the wake of the pandemic. Some parents have expressed concerns about NHS waiting times for Speech and Language Therapy (SLT), which ties into the report from June 2024 that revealed 22,952 children were on NHS SLT waiting lists, with many waiting up to 52 weeks for an appointment.

In response to this rising need, Chapter House appointed its own Speech and Language Therapist, Sarah Semple, to work directly with children in one-to-one and small group sessions. Sarah has been warmly welcomed by parents and works closely with Sam Wise, our Learning Development Coordinator. Together, they recently ran a successful Communication Workshop for parents, providing strategies to support speech and language development at home.

The decision to appoint a dedicated SLT was an easy one for us, as we wanted to ensure that students receive the necessary support as soon as a need is identified, minimising any

Sarah reflects: “Being in school means I can work closely with teachers and parents to help children meet their full potential. It’s been rewarding to identify needs early and support children throughout their educational journey.”

At Chapter House, every child is assessed upon joining, and if specific needs are identified, an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) is created, consisting of independent or group booster sessions and adaptive classroom practises. Gifted and talented children are also identified upon arrival and challenged through accelerated learning clubs. The school also fosters talent through enrichment clubs and small class sizes, which allow for up to 50% more teacher contact time.
