ABSOLUTELY’S
Thirteen. Unlucky for some, but that's the number of years I have been married to my wonderful wife (comedians of yesteryear would probably say something disparaging, but I won't sink to those levels). Despite being 13 years ago, it's amazing the number of times our wedding comes up when meeting friends and family.
There was the photo booth, one of the first things that we decided to spend money on and I am so happy we did. Not too long ago I was at a friend's house for dinner and I noticed on the wall a picture from the booth of him and his wife pulling the most ridiculous faces. That made me smile a lot. There was my gag of buying my father a huge top hat, which linked to the importance in the family (although as my cousin pointed out at the time, I should have got a very small one). That top hat is on show at my parents' home. People always bring up the fact that my wife was an hour late, as she was waiting for her hairdresser to battle through traffic. Not one of the highlights for me.
But it just goes to show how important your big day is, so you need to make sure everything is in place for matters to go smoothly. Here's hoping our weddings special will be the start of you making your own wonderful memories.

Assistance Breakdown
We celebrate the joy of weddings in this issue, but things don’t always run smoothly in life, as Tash Gershfield and Carly Harris are only too aware of
Co-hosts of Not As We Planned – Hertfordshire’s Tash Gershfield and Essex-based Carly Harris – started their podcast in 2023 after the breakdown of their relationships. Since then, the podcast has grown at a rapid pace and now sits at approximately 40,000 monthly listeners. They have recently hosted their first live event and have successfully released their very own planner aimed to help others with their own healing journey. They spill the tea on life after divorce while giving a big high-five to singlehood and dating into your 30s. They’re building a tribe of fierce, uplifting women who stand tall against whatever curveballs life throws their way. With heart and humour, they dive deep into the messy, magical moments of motherhood, sharing real stories that resonate. From tackling sizzling topics to smashing taboos, they’re all about raising awareness and empowering women everywhere – and Absolutely met the two to find out more.
Q When did the two of you meet and what were your first impressions of the other?
A Carly: We both followed each other on Instagram for a few years but had never met. We shared similar content and engaged on each other’s pages. Tash then announced she was going through a separation and shared her divorce journey with her followers. Less than a year later, I reached
out to Tash as I was about to go through the same journey and wanted advice. Tash: I was in the process of trying to launch a podcast but felt like something was missing. Carly ended up being that missing piece, and we filmed our first episode together after only having met once beforehand to discuss the podcast. From the moment we met, it felt like we had been friends for years, and we just clicked.
Q Why do you think you hit it o ?
A Carly: I think we are very similar with our beliefs, morals, and values. Our goals aligned, and we felt like we clicked instantly, which made everything feel really natural.
Q When was the subject of a possible podcast first broached between you?
A Tash: I asked Carly if she wanted to do a podcast with me, shortly after she told me about her separation. I didn’t want to be insensitive, but I saw an opportunity, so thought I would ask, and luckily she grabbed it with both hands!
Q Why did you think you had something to say?
A Carly: We were both going through such heartache and changes in our family dynamics. We felt a strong need to share our journeys on our own platforms and together, so people wouldn’t feel shame or guilt for going through a divorce. We wanted to make sure people didn’t feel alone and create a safe space for those who could relate.
Q What was your personal situation like when you launched it? I believe you are both mothers?
A Tash: Yes, we’re both mums to young children, navigating becoming single parents, managing a coparenting relationship, and trying to heal from the breakup.
Q How did the first podcast go and what did you cover on it?
A Carly: It went straight to number one on the Apple Family and Kids charts, and we couldn’t believe it! We talked about realising our relationships were over and shared details about our own personal experiences with our breakups. I think a lot of people could relate to our situation – we’ve all been through heartbreak at one time or another haven’t we? Tash: We were blown away by the response to be honest. We went straight to number one and have stayed in the top five ever since we launched.
Q How do you go about planning a new episode?
A Carly: The majority of our content shares similar aspects, so there isn’t one particular topic that stands out as more popular than another. But we do cover a lot of breakup emails, dating dilemmas, and provide a lot of advice to those who want to do the work and heal.
Q Of the subjects you’ve covered, which ones stand out for you and why?
A Tash: Our episodes can really vary at times. One minute we will have you crying and the next laughing! Our episodes share
people’s stories and we give feedback and advice. Our dating episodes have always been a laugh to film and we’ve shared some wild horror stories! We love that our content gives people hope and doesn’t make them feel so alone.
Q How did the first live event come about? What did you cover in the event, and how do you feel it went?
A Carly: We did a live podcast where the audience could get involved and ask questions. It was a chance for like-minded independent women to meet one another, and it went really well! We’re definitely going to be planning more for this year. Tash: We felt like we didn’t just grow an audience; we formed a supportive community of women. We wanted to help them meet other inspiring women in the same position, so our first event was solely for single mums, and it was such a success.
Q Is there a tour to come?
A Tash: Yes, we’re planning for 2026. Watch this space!
Q What is the thinking behind The Healing Journal?
A Carly: Our healing journal was created after we both worked through our divorces and realised we could help others do the same. We wanted to encourage people to do the work on themselves. Sometimes, people are willing to do the work, but aren’t sure how. So, we saw an opportunity to help with this by creating our healing journal. We’d always been asked what people could do to help their friends going through heartbreak, and now we can point them to this journal.
Q Do you have plenty of other ambitions for Not As We Planned?
A Tash: We’ve barely scratched the surface… big, big plans are in the works!
Q When you are not busy with the podcast, where do you love to head to in your respective areas?
A Carly: I love living in the countryside and enjoy beautiful walks with great views. My favourite spots are Hatfield Forest, The Lion and Lamb Pub, and Lakeside. Tash: I’ve grown up in Hertfordshire and love being surrounded by family and friends and love raising my children where I grew up. My favourite spots have to be Verulamium Park, The Grove, and Brent Cross Shopping Centre.
Q How optimistic are you about the future?
A Carly: We’re massively optimistic about the future of the podcast and where we see it going! We really feel like this is just the beginning for us.

Absolutely caught up with Southend comedian John Tothill on his debut UK tour to find out about the rather surreal inspiration behind it
John Tothill, hailing from Southend-on-Sea, is a distinctive voice in contemporary British comedy. Initially pursuing a career in music, his passion for performance led him to study music at the University of Cambridge, where he became actively involved in student comedy, notably with the Footlights.
After university, John worked as a primary school teacher, an experience that deeply influenced his comedic material. His debut Edinburgh Fringe show, The Last Living Libertine, received critical acclaim for its unique blend of historical discourse and personal anecdotes, reflecting his foppish persona and erudite humour.
In 2024, John presented his second show, Thank God This Lasts Forever, at the Edinburgh Fringe, further establishing his reputation for witty storytelling and sharp social commentary, which he then took on tour – and Absolutely caught up with him during one particularly hilarious gig.
Q What is your show, Thank God This Lasts Forever, about?
A It’s about a malaria trial I went on in 2023, and what I feel like it taught me – and most of all, I think it’s about prioritising your pleasure in life over anything like a career or any kind of precious notion of time-keeping or that sort of thing.
Q How did the medical trial come about?
A When I was preparing to go to the notoriously expensive Edinburgh Fringe in 2023, I desperately needed to find a way to fund the show. So I signed up for flu camp – which is a paid medical trial for out-of-work actors, comedians and bored students – all of which, at various points in my life, I have been. What could possibly go wrong? The answer to that is, you can turn out to be too healthy, and end up instead taking a malaria infection that causes you to hallucinate…
Q How much did the trial pay?
A I got paid about £2,500 all in and if I’m honest, I would have done it for less. I
probably shouldn’t have had to have got a life-threatening disease in order to do a comedy show, but I don’t regret it. It was either that or work a regular nine-to-five in the hope of saving money. Given my impulsive approach to finances, it was really a choice between a death sentence and a life sentence. I chose the death sentence and thankfully got away with it. And I’d do it again! And because it’s compensation and not pay, I don’t have to declare it as tax, which is fantastic.
Q How dangerous was the malaria trial?
A The malaria trial was much better paid – not because it’s dangerous, but because people are scared of malaria. But the scientists running the trial were very nice and really upfront about the risks. “Not all types of malaria kill,” the doctor told me. “But the one we’re giving you does.” I had to sign a lot of forms basically saying I would not leave the study, because if I did, without medication, I would die. I was also told if I left, to absolutely not to go to Kent – as the marshlands are the only
place in the UK with malarial mosquitoes. Which got me out of going to a wedding I didn’t want to attend. Absolutely ideal.
Q How long were you on the malaria trial?
A Well, there were just two of us who got the prize to be injected with malaria. And after a few days, the other person got to the necessary level of malaria bugs in their blood, was given the antibodies and was able to go home. But after about 10 days, my malaria count was still at zero. So the doctors called me in and asked if I was sabotaging the experiment to make more money (because the trials are paid by the day). They asked if I was drinking gin and tonic to keep the malaria at bay – but that I’d have to be drinking about three pints of it a day, and I could promise them I wasn’t doing that. The doctors told me they thought the malaria
“What a night out I had, toasting my recovery and immortality”
was hiding in my liver. Frankly, after the Hereculian trials I had put my liver through as a student, I was actually quite touched to find out the parasites still wanted to hang out there, because I for one wouldn’t have chosen to. And then, about two weeks after being injected, I suddenly started to feel really sick.
Q How sick did the malaria trial make you?
A It was by a long way the sickest I’ve ever been in my life. I was really horribly sick and delirious, with very sharp pains all across my body, and my temperature soaring and soaring. At one point I was having strange feverish nightmares where the devil was dragging me into hell as part of this Faustian pact I’d made to fund my comedy show. The doctors then tested me again, and my count had gone from zero to well into the thousands. And they were
pretty excited about that. The trial was supposed to be examining the body at an early stage of malaria, but now my body was at mid-stage malaria. I was given some pills, which didn’t work for days – which really started to worry the doctors, until they observed me taking the pills with Diet Coke (which was destroying the pills’ medical properties). The doctors were pretty irritated about that. We compromised on letting me drink them with chocolate milk. To this day, I swear that I owe my life to Nesquik.
Q How long did it take you to recover after that?
A After that moment, my recovery was, frankly, humiliatingly quick. Malaria medication works unbelievably fast. After four days of fever, I was back on the streets again, ready for a big night out. And what a night out I had, toasting my recovery and, frankly, my immortality. The next day I woke up with a terrible hangover. My head was pounding, and I was surrounded by empty McDonald’s wrappers and a thousand Lost Mary vapes. “Oh god,” I thought, “is this the malaria coming back?” It was not. Thank god.
Q And so would you recommend a clinical trial?
A Oh absolutely. There were times when it was scary, but the doctors were absolutely amazing. The physical pain was o set by the security and support of them telling me ‘We know exactly what’s wrong with you, we put it there.’ The other thing I’d recommend is that you buy a ticket to my show, because hilariously it’s still in the red financially. I would actually recommend clinical trials to anybody, but I’d rather fund my show another way next time.

A CULINARY JOURNEY
Exploring the history of San Carlo Restaurants
By MARK KEBBLE
San Carlo Restaurants has etched its name into the annals of the UK dining scene as a symbol of Italian culinary excellence. Established in 1992, the brand has enjoyed a trajectory marked by growth, innovation, and a steadfast commitment to authentic Italian cuisine. From its humble beginnings to becoming a beloved institution, the history of San Carlo Restaurants is a story of passion, perseverance, and a dedication to flavour.
THE BEGINNING: A VISION COMES TO LIFE
The journey of San Carlo begins with its founder, Carlo Distefano. Originally from Sicily, Distefano brought with him a deep appreciation for Italian culinary traditions. The first San Carlo restaurant opened in the heart of Birmingham, a city that was, and still is, a melting pot of cultures. It quickly became known for its vibrant atmosphere and authentic dishes, setting the standard for Italian dining in the UK. Distefano’s vision was clear: to provide diners with not just food, but an experience that celebrated the richness
of Italian culture. With a keen focus on fresh ingredients and traditional recipes, the first San Carlo restaurant laid the groundwork for a brand that would soon expand beyond Birmingham.
EXPANSION AND GROWTH
The success of the original San Carlo restaurant led to a remarkable expansion. In the late 1990s, the brand began to grow, with new locations opening not just in Birmingham, but in other major cities across the UK. By prioritising quality and consistency, each new establishment upheld the standards set by the original restaurant.
The San Carlo experience goes beyond just food; it encompasses ambiance and service. The restaurants are designed to reflect the warmth of Italian hospitality, creating a space where guests feel welcome and valued. This commitment to excellence resonated with diners, leading to a loyal customer base that continued to grow.
LANDMARK EVENTS AND RECOGNITION
As the San Carlo brand solidified its presence in the UK, it garnered numerous accolades that underscored its reputation as a leader in the industry. The restaurant group received various awards for its exceptional food quality and innovative dining experiences. This recognition helped to elevate the status of San Carlo Restaurants, making them a preferred choice for locals and tourists alike.
THE EVOLVING MENU: TRADITION MEETS INNOVATION
One of the hallmarks of San Carlo Restaurants is its ability to adapt while
staying true to its roots. The menu has evolved over the years to include a range of dishes that reflect both traditional Italian cuisine and modern culinary trends. Seasonal ingredients are a focal point, ensuring that the menu remains fresh and exciting. Signature dishes such as wood-fired pizzas, handmade pasta, and fine seafood o er guests an authentic taste of Italy.
A BRIGHT FUTURE
As of 2025, San Carlo Restaurants continue to thrive, with several locations operating across London, Manchester, and beyond. The brand’s commitment to authenticity and quality, combined with its innovative approach to Italian cuisine, has ensured its place in the competitive landscape of the UK dining scene. Looking forward, the future appears promising – with plans for continued expansion and a focus on sustainability and community engagement, the company is poised to remain a staple of Italian dining in the UK. The journey
that began in Birmingham in 1992 has transformed into a rich history of passion, flavour, and an unwavering commitment to providing an unparalleled dining experience. San Carlo Restaurants stand not just as eateries, but as ambassadors of Italian culinary culture, reminding us that food is much more than sustenance – it’s a celebration of life.

La Gioiosa, one of Italy’s biggest names in fizz, has gone portable with its latest launch – crisp, refreshing Prosecco and Italian Sparkling Rosé in cans. Tucked away in the South Downs near Pulborough, West Sussex, Stopham specialises in aromatic still wines, crafting some of the country’s finest Pinot Gris, Bacchus, and Pinot Blanc. And they’ve got the silverware to prove it, racking up awards from WineGB and the Independent English Wine Awards like it’s no big deal.
Founded in 2007 by Simon Woodhead, a former McLaren F1 engineer, Stopham takes the same precision and craft that goes into fine-tuning race cars and applies it to winemaking. But don’t mistake precision for over-engineering - they are all about guiding the grapes, not micromanaging them. From meticulously managed vineyards to minimal-intervention techniques in the winery, their approach lets the fruit do the talking, resulting in vibrant, aromatic wines with crisp acidity and layers of delicate complexity that rank among England’s finest still wines.
Sustainability is at the heart of the operation, too, and if you fancy a closer look, their vineyard tours and tastings o er the perfect excuse to sip awardwinning wine while soaking in the Sussex countryside.

LETTER TO THE
LA jewellery designer Maya Brenner developed a cult following for her initial necklaces. Absolutely visits her studio
By PENDLE HARTE
Is this the age of personalisation? Everyone wants something authentic, something with meaning – and, increasingly, brands are o ering us ways of becoming part of a product’s story. We want to take an active role, rather than simply consuming. So whether it’s designing our own trainers, engraving names into hairbrushes or creating our own perfumes, the notion of identity is very much a part of today’s shopping experience. And LA-based jeweller Maya Brenner is very much part of the zeitgeist. Her business started small, about 20 years ago, when she started making pretty necklaces featuring charms and initials, firstly as a hobby while she was working as a social worker, and later as a business. But when Meghan Markle was pictured wearing one in 2008, things really took o this side of the Atlantic. Orders started flooding in and in 2021 Maya opened a showroom – and now I have headed there to design my own necklace, because the brand’s best-seller remains the customisable asymmetrical letter necklace as worn by the Duchess of Sussex. Not that you actually need to come in person. Maya’s website features a clever interactive design tool that allows you to choose, arrange and rearrange as many letters, charms and birthstones as you please. But in the brand’s airy base, there’s a team of friendly faces to help you decide, and of course seeing the actual pieces is a bonus. First there’s chain length – all chains are 14k gold, making them strong and durable; there’s yellow, white or rose to choose from. And then there are the charms, which are welded onto the chain rather than simply hung in the usual way, and this is what creates the signature asymmetric look. Of course you can fit as many or as
few as you like; I’m going for three, thinking that odd numbers look more striking. Heart, moon, angel wing, Om, paw print, Hamsa or cross? Gold or pave? In the end I choose a P, a crescent moon and an opal (not my actual birthstone but why should it be?).
All orders are made here, by Maya’s assistant who relocated here from California. The beauty of these necklaces is that they can keep evolving – clients are always coming back to add letters after, say, having a baby, or to remove letters (after, say, a divorce) – and repairs and cleaning are always o ered.

Here are some of Essex’s finest wedding venues
Getting married and looking for the perfect venue in Essex?
From stunning country houses to historic barns, city centre locations to rural retreats, Visit Essex, the county’s tourism organisation, shares some of the best places to tie the knot in the county.
LOVE IN A NATURAL SETTING
Essex has many stunning natural environments and nature lovers, or anyone looking for something a little bit unique, have some beautiful choices to consider.

Couples looking for something completely unique will fall in love with
another Browning Bros venue – Teybrook Orchard; the venue is the dream place for a boho wedding. Set in a secluded orchard, this intimate setting is the perfect spot for an enchanted woodland wedding. After ‘tying the knot’ among the trees, head to a grand marquee to party the night away. And there’s no need to worry about getting home – the venue also o ers glamping accommodation for the happy couple and their guests.
Nestled in the stunning countryside with panoramic views over the landscape, Downham Hall, Billericay, is a renovated country house that serves as a wonderful wedding venue. Three main spaces are licensed for ceremonies and available for post ceremony celebrations too. Downham Hall o ers tailor-made packages to create the dream wedding, down to every last
detail. Brides can spend the morning getting ready in the on-site bridal suite, plus there are also five bedrooms so the wedding party can stay overnight after the celebrations. Or opt for an alfresco wedding with more formal flora and fauna. The stunning Gibberd Garden near Harlow o ers a relaxing and beautiful location for a wedding reception. The garden occupies nine acres on the side of a small valley, and features sculptures, lawns, pools and glades, all ingredients for a magical day. The wooden beamed Barn Tea Room can accommodate up to 44 guests for the wedding breakfast.
THE DOWNTON FACTOR
For those searching for some Downton Abbey style, the county has many impressive grand estates, castles and priories that will give your wedding day an imposing sense of occasion. Ingatestone Hall is a grand 16th century manor house that can accommodate small or large weddings (20 to 200 guests). The venue provides a gorgeous setting for a couple’s ceremony and celebrations. Take your pick from five principal rooms including the light and airy Summer Parlour and the oak panelled Stone Hall. Outside there are extensive gardens, meadows and courtyards that will give guests and photographs a real sense of occasion. There are plenty of wonderful hotels nearby for guests to stay over, such as the Marygreen Manor or County Hotel. A multi-award-winning wedding venue, Hylands Estate in Chelmsford is one of the most beautiful wedding venues in Essex. Wedding parties can get ready and relax in the wedding suites, ranging from the Wisteria Room with a huge mirror that gives brides full length views of their dress, the Rose Room with a salon style beauty

area, whilst the Repton Room is ideal for the groom and his party, with views overlooking the sweeping back lawn. The iconic, white, Grade II listed mansion boasts opulent rooms with gold leaf details, ornate ceilings, all with stunning views over the extensive landscaped grounds. Outside there is the Grand Pavilion for very large weddings of up to 300 guests. Couples can also choose the outdoor wedding ceremony garden and say their vows under the canopy of the estate’s magnificent ancient trees.
Moving a little closer to the coast is the restored and reimagined country estate of St Osyth Priory. The priory has over 1,500 years of history and makes for a jaw-dropping backdrop for any wedding. The wedding party will enjoy the exclusive use of Darcy House, which includes the Great Hall, Gallery and event space, and their own event manager who will oversee the whole day. The happy couple can also choose anywhere in the estate to exchange vows, ranging from the elegant ruins of Abbots Tower to the lovingly restored Gallery. The equally impressive Braxted Park, near Witham, o ers a tree-lined approach which leads to the main house, pavilion, orangery and walled garden. teller Story
Gill Challis, the Essex-based founder of White Peacock Album Design, on how she creates stunning lasting mementoes of weddings
Q What are the origins of White Peacock Album Design?
A I’ve always had a passion for photos and I always loved flipping through family photo albums when I was younger. It was whilst I was studying Creative Advertising at University that I really began to appreciate just how powerful a photo can be. They’re not just a snapshot of something, they’re preserving a moment in time that we don’t want to forget. When I was planning my own wedding back in 2010, I came across quite a few wedding albums displayed in the venues. I felt quite uninspired by what I saw and I knew I wanted our wedding album to be more special and unique. So I decided to design my own album. It was a real labour of love, and it was through this process that I realised how bringing all those individual photos together on a page creates not only a beautiful display of those photos, but brings them to life in a visual story of the wedding day.
My eldest son was born in 2011 and I took the decision to step away from my previous job. This allowed me the opportunity to turn my passion into a business and White Peacock Album Design was born in 2013.
Q Why did you want to become involved with others' wedding stories?
A Who doesn’t love a good wedding?! They’re filled with emotion and so many special moments, and most couples know just how important it is to capture those moments by investing in a professional wedding photographer. But there seemed to be a disjointed gap between investing in those beautiful wedding photos and what couples actually did with them afterwards. I think it’s a real shame that, as we’ve become much more digitised as a society, printing our photos is much less of a priority. I’m so passionate about promoting the importance of having a tangible keepsake of your memories – not just a bunch of photos sitting on a laptop – even more so when it comes to your wedding photos. A beautifully crafted wedding album is real, something you can pick up and look through and there’s just no comparison to viewing those images on a screen. Not only that, but the longevity of a wedding album far exceeds digital files; 20 years from now, will you still be able to access your Instagram account to show those photos to your kids?
As a consequence, I saw a gap in the wedding album market for a fully customised wedding album experience, where couples have complete control over not only the album package they choose, but also the freedom to decide exactly how many photos to include and the creative input into the layout and design of those photos without having to do it themselves. Every wedding album I create is designed on a blank canvas rather than using restrictive templates or album design software. I just love bringing those wedding photos to life in a visual story that is unique to each couple.
Over the last few years I’ve noticed that couples were increasingly keen on adding
GILL CHALLIS
written details alongside their photos such as readings and first dance lyrics. So, I’ve recently launched an alternative option… the Wedding Storybook. It’s a more contemporary co ee table style book that sits somewhere between a wedding album and a glossy magazine and allows couples to incorporate not only their wedding photos, but also the smaller details of their day in a written format that the photos alone just can’t portray. It’s perfect for those detail focused couples who want to capture as many memories of their day in one compact creative format.
Q What kind of wedding albums have you produced?
A The great thing about what I do is that I’ve been able to create albums for such a wide range of weddings. From intimate elopements and traditional English church weddings to large multicultural events and destination weddings with amazing backdrops. Each one has their own identity and style with lots of stunning photography. Here’s a couple of examples:
MULTI-EVENT PANAMA WEDDING
Wedding Photographer: wearebrstudio.com
This was a project of epic proportions for a multi-event wedding that took place at the bride’s family home in Panama. The whole wedding had been changed and replanned due to Covid so it was extra special for the couple. They had commissioned photography for the wedding day itself, the rehearsal dinner and a pre-wedding intimate couple’s shoot in the surrounding mountains (which were stunning). With so many amazing photos and moments captured, they wanted three
separate Wedding Albums for each event and a Wedding Storybook to bring all the details of their whole wedding story together. Whilst each album was slightly di erent, we ensured there was a cohesiveness across all the albums and storybook. The couple opted for genuine leather covers with a di erent shade for each album that complemented that particular event and the photos. We kept to the same layout style throughout all the albums and used fonts and colours that matched their bespoke wedding stationery.
INTIMATE ENGLISH GARDEN ELOPEMENT
Wedding Photographer: michelleleyphotography.com
Wedding Venue: millbrookestate.co.uk
This wedding album featured an intimate
outdoor summer elopement set amongst beautiful lush gardens with the sun shining. Because it was just the couple on their own, the album felt very intimate as they were the focus in all of the photos throughout. To complement the natural feel of the venue, the couple opted for a simple cream buckram album cover with subtle text and a beautiful wood box. Inside was quite di erent and we made the most of the stunning colour and greenery on show in the images by using a bold design that filled the pages with photos.
Wedding Album Packages start at £620 and Wedding Storybook Packages start at £510. All album packages can be tailored to suit individual requirements. Find out more at whitepeacockalbumdesign.co.uk

Professional colour made in Ukraine
Backstage is Ukraine’s largest hair salon group, and it recently bought the Duck & Dry chain of blow dry bars. The King’s Road, London, site is spacious, with friendly sta . Locals keep coming in for a blow dry and are surprised to learn that the o ering has expanded widely – and colour treatments are now a salon speciality.
I’m here for some highlights and a spring refresh, and Raul is full of ideas. Flicking through pictures on his phone, he is suggesting that I go for a ‘creamier’ blonde and ditch the ashiness of my old highlights. I’m ready for this, and he proceeds with more care and attention than I’m used to. “I’m thinking ahead to your toner,” he says, thoughtfully. And wondering what kind of shade would I prefer, to a nanodegree that I can barely imagine. So I leave it to him, and he meticulously paints carefully selected strands of hair and wraps them in foil for some time before he’s satisfied that everything is just as it should be. Timing it perfectly and following up with a moisturising treatment, my colour is revealed to be just as promised: rich and warm rather than ashy, with particular attention to the strands around my face. A skilled blowdry leaves my usually flat locks infused with bounce and life that lasts well into the next few days. And that’s a record for me. Thank you Raul!

A POOL FOR EVERYONE
There are so many reasons to choose Easy Pools
GREAT DESIGNS AND SPEED OF INSTALLATION
Easy Pool’s huge modular range means that there is a shape and size to suit everyone. Gone are the days when building a pool meant having builders on site for weeks on end, not to mention delays caused by rain.
Most pools in the range are completed in a week or two. Compare that to a concrete pool that can take months to complete, during which time your garden looks a mess. Pool sizes range from 4m to 12m with flat or sloped bases. There are currently short lead times as most models are in stock.
SMOOTH FINISH
Leisure Pools fibreglass swimming pools have a smooth, clean gelcoat finish that is non-abrasive.
MAINTENANCE-FREE
The gelcoat finish on a Leisure Pool not only looks great, it is also so easy to look after. The surface is smooth and non-porous so it cleans easily and is very stain resistant.
COLOUR RANGE
Leisure Pools o ers an exclusive range of seven beautiful colours, each with its own sparkle and shimmer finish, ensuring you will be able to find the ideal colour to suit your home and taste.
COMPATIBILITY
Salt chlorinators, chlorine, fresh water systems and ozone systems all work wonderfully well with Leisure Pools fiberglass pools. Whatever your choice may be, it will be compatible.
“The gelcoat finish not only looks great, it is also so easy to look after”
SAFETY FOR CHILDREN AND PETS
Automatic safety covers comply with all EU regulations. Many pool owners have children or grandchildren, or entertain friends with children. When owning a pool where kids will be playing, safety is a major concern. The side of a swimming pool can often be slick and hard to grasp for children. The safety ledge allows children to stand on the ledge and grasp the side of the pool. This can be helpful for children learning to swim, and can provide parents with added peace of mind.
WARRANTY
If you are getting quotes, ask if a lifetime warranty is being provided on the structure of the swimming pool. At best with a concrete pool you will get a seven-year warranty. Do you hope to have a pool for longer than that? The manufacturer is so certain it builds the world’s best composite pool that it o ers a Lifetime Structural Warranty and a Lifetime Structural Osmosis Warranty on all swimming pools.
Flat proof
When you fix your flat roof you want to be sure it’s fixed.
The answer is an innovative, multi-surface, flexible GRP roofing system that’s seamless and has no welds. But you knew that.
Bet you didn’t know most standard sized roofs are off, back on and water tight, in a day.

A century of design and durability
Moquette, derived from the French word for carpet, is a hard-wearing wool fabric used in public transport upholstery worldwide. For over 100 years, it has been a signature of London’s transport system, covering seats on buses, trains, trams, and trolleybuses. Millions of commuters have sat on these vibrant patterns, making moquette a true emblem of the city’s identity.
The first moquette design was developed in the 1920s, its geometric design embracing the Art Deco style of the era. By the 1930s, renowned designers were commissioned to create stylish yet practical patterns. Over

ANDALUSIAN
RIVER ADVENTURE
Discovering the fascinating history of Andalusia from the water
By SANDY CADIZ-SMITH
The vibrant region of Andalusia in southern Spain is the largest autonomous community in the country and is made up of eight provinces. It’s home to many diverse landscapes from the snowy peaks of the Sierra Nevada to the interior farmlands and the myriad beaches of the Costa del Sol.
Andalusia is also the olive oil-producing capital of Spain and the home of flamenco, sherry, and the graceful Andalusian breed of horse. And it’s famous for being the starting point for Christopher Columbus on his journey to the New World. There are riches galore to discover across this glorious region with its fascinating historical tapestry and some of the most spectacular architecture on earth.
And what better way to do so than from onboard the MS La Belle de Cadix, our stylish riverboat? The boat awaits us on the banks of the Guadalquivir in the region’s capital, Seville. It’s streamlined and compact, carrying a maximum of 176 passengers, and provides the ideal base for exploring the city and the heart of Andalusia by land, river, and sea over seven days on board.
Smiling faces greet us and we’re soon settled in our comfortable cabin with its picture windows overlooking the grandeur of the river. Everything onboard (food, drink, and entertainment) and all excursions are included in the upfront price, which makes for an incredibly relaxing experience.
Tasty dinners are served in the restaurant (including the best paella ever packed with seafood) and there’s a lounge bar where we enjoy cocktails and live entertainment – our highlight is the drama of flamenco night.
MS LA BELLE DE CADIX
TORRE DEL ORO SEVILLE
Someone is always on hand to ensure we have the best and smoothest of experiences. We are based in Seville for most of the week, which gives us plenty of time in this magnificent city with excursions to all the local landmarks and plenty of free time to explore independently. We also take guided day trips to the incredible historic cities of Cordoba and Granada. The journey is part of this captivating experience as we drive through olive groves that stretch endlessly across the rolling hills, their silvery-grey leaves shimmering in the sunshine. Our guide regales us with tales of Andalusia through history as we immerse ourselves in the region both geographically and culturally.
Cordoba is something of a revelation. Once Europe’s largest city and a hub of knowledge in the Middle Ages, it’s home to the unique
Christian-Muslim monument, the Mesquite, the most unexpectedly fascinating and beautiful place we’ve ever been. We catch our breath and wander through the maze of streets of the Jewish Quarter in the city’s Old Town and stop for a tasty, traditional lunch.
Granada is renowned for its vibrant blend of cultures, Moorish heritage, and, of course, the majestic Alhambra Palace. Perched on a hill overlooking the city, the Alhambra was constructed over centuries, starting in the 9th century, and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. It’s a mathematical miracle set in beautiful gardens and yet another Andalusian spectacle to absorb.
When we set sail, it’s down the Guadalquivir River into the Atlantic Ocean. We dock in the picturesque town of El Puerto De Santa Maria for a visit to Osborne Sherry – Andalusia is
the home of sherry, after all – and head to Sanlucar de Barrameda for a horse dressage show, another tradition of the region.
We also dock in Cadiz, a unique coastal city located on a narrow peninsula surrounded almost entirely by water, and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe. We explore ancient ruins, legendary beaches, and winding cobbled alleyways lined by cafes and shops, before heading back to our riverboat haven for the journey back to Seville.
On our final day, we visit Huelva for a crucial piece of the Andalusian historical puzzle. We tour the Rabida Monastery where Christopher Columbus stayed while planning his journey to the New World and the nearby Caravels Park which displays life-size replicas of his three ships.
Our exploration of Andalusia by land and water o ers a unique and immersive way to experience diverse landscapes, rich history, and vibrant culture. It’s an unforgettable adventure, blending the past and present of one of Spain's most captivating regions.

PINK MOMENTS… and ORANGE SUNSETS
Crystal McClory heads to the City of Angels, Santa Monica Beach and Ojai Mountains
Itravelled toLos Angeles in November to visit a friend and despite January’s wildfires, which a ected just 2% of this enormous city that thrives on tourism, it’s business as usual. The show must go on. After all, as Sebastian, played by Ryan Gosling, says in LA LA Land: “I’m a phoenix rising from the ashes.”
Head to LA for a city break, beach walks, hiking and pink mountains. On the long-haul flight to see the Hollywood stars, celebrity aesthetician Sadaf Ja ari recommends using a Charlotte Tilbury Facial Dry Sheet Mask. It’s a half-hour drive to AC Hotel Downtown Los Angeles from the airport. Neon billboards cast pink shadows and skyscraper windows reflect the beautiful golden LA light as we approach this striking 37-story L-shaped tower. Modern serene rooms are well-designed with super comfy beds and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking an ever-changing cityscape of LA for epic elevated views –we could even see the Hollywood sign! Korres products are in the shower and there’s a giant vending machine for anything you forgot to pack. Or walk to Sephora to stock up on your favourite beauty brands. I pack a Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Pink Juice Moisturizer and M&S Orange Body Butter. We catch a stunning orange sunset from La Lo La Rooftop on the 34th floor.
We enter Level 8 with its eight dining, drinking and entertainment venues. Mr Wanderlust is a piano bar and jazz lounge. Lucky Mizu waves you in with beckoning Japanese cat figurines. Opulent dark corridors with modern Ti any-style glass lampshades lead to Qué Barbaro. This South American fire grill restaurant, serving steak and seafood, opens onto poolside Golden Hour. Red lights surround the cobalt swimming pool casting a pink glow on the fire dancer, and an illuminated fairground carousel bar. Enjoy a cocktail at the alfresco oyster and ceviche bar Mother of Pearl and The Brown Sheep food truck is on the terrace. Sinners y Santos is a cathedral-inspired nightclub with a speakeasy entrance for drinks and a dance.
The morning after the night before we enjoy the bu et breakfast of champions at
the AC Bar & Lounge so much that we go round twice! LA is large so grab an Uber or book a driverless Waymo taxi – very futuristic if a little unnerving as you watch the steering wheel turn in a ghostly fashion. For a fashion fix go shopping at beautifully curated lifestyle boutiques at The Row, DTLA.
For sightseeing, I style a Nobody’s Child blouse with my favourite Whistles jeans and trainers. The Broad is a contemporary art museum, next to the impressive Walt Disney Concert Hall. Take charming funicular Angels Flight Railway to grab a bite inside Grand Central Market, then check out The Last Bookstore. At Downtown LA Proper we enjoy rooftop cocktails by the firepit with incredible views of skyscrapers at Cara Cara.
Hike up the hill to the Gri th Park Observatory for great views of the city. Lollipop silhouettes of palm trees punctuate the horizon. A helicopter rattles overhead as crows caw. Cars glitter like shards of glass in the sun. My

Pelicans glide in a triangle formation. A kaleidoscope of colours on the big wheel of the Santa Monica Pier as the sun sets orange on skaters and cyclists along the Venice Boardwalk. Drive to rural Ojai valley, ringed with spectacular mountains. Ojai is known for spiritual retreats, a great art scene, and hiking trails. Pausing for lunch at organic café Farmer and the Cook, we chat with local sculptor Ted Gall. Bart’s Books open-air courtyard has books of all kinds – everything under the sun! Hop aboard the Ojai trolley to see village landmarks; Ojai Valley Museum, Post O ce bell tower and Libbey Park. Cute boutique stores include Heavenly Honey, bohemian store Kariella, Ova Arts gallery artworks include Ted Gall’s sculptures, and Ojai Ice Cream. At the luxury Ojai Valley Inn we wander through impeccable grounds as rabbits bound past this stunning hacienda. Sip a drink by the firepit and soak in the picturesque view. Learning JOURNEY
The Deputy Head Academic of Bishop's Stortford College on its curriculum designed to ensure a coherent learning journey from early years to sixth form
By PETER O'CONNOR
In a world that demands adaptability, critical thinking, and a capacity for lifelong learning, the role of education has never been more pivotal. At Bishop’s Stortford College, our curriculum review project has embarked on a mission to meet this challenge head-on, creating a coherent and progressive learning journey for our pupils aged 3 to 18. Central to this initiative is the adoption of a spiralised curriculum, a design that builds depth, breadth, and connection in learning across the years.
This vision took centre stage during a recent sta development day, which united teaching sta from our Prep and Senior Schools to collaborate on shaping a curriculum that enhances not only knowledge and skills but also values, attitudes, and dispositions. The day served as a springboard for fostering a unified approach to reflect the essence of our all-through school: a nurturing environment where every stage of a pupil’s educational journey is interconnected.
At its heart, a spiralised curriculum introduces key concepts and skills at a foundational level, revisiting them with increasing complexity as pupils progress through their education. This structure ensures that learning aligns with cognitive development, consolidates understanding over time, and fosters the interdisciplinary connections essential for navigating a complex and unpredictable future.
For instance, a concept introduced in early years – such as sustainability – might evolve from simple explorations of recycling to sophisticated debates on environmental ethics and policy in the Sixth Form. By layering knowledge in this way, we equip pupils not just with facts, but with the critical thinking skills needed to apply their learning in new and diverse contexts.
All-through schools like Bishop’s Stortford College o er a unique advantage in implementing such a curriculum. Seamless transitions between educational stages allow us to map and align learning
objectives. Pupils benefit from consistency in teaching approaches, a shared ethos, and a developmental understanding of their needs at every stage.
This approach fosters a sense of continuity and belonging. Young learners can look up to older pupils as role models, while Sixth Formers, in turn, reflect
on their own growth and take pride in mentoring the younger generation. The result is a community where academic achievement is complemented by social-emotional development and a shared commitment to core values.
Taking a holistic view of the curriculum ensures coherence and progression in the development of a pupils’ knowledge, skills, and understanding, as well as fostering the key skills and dispositions that will underpin their success in an ever-changing world.
Preparing pupils for the modern world is key – a world where adaptability, problemsolving, creativity, and ethical decisionmaking are as crucial as academic rigour. Sta need to understand how their subject contributes to building these capacities and how interdisciplinary approaches can enhance learning experiences.
Embedding opportunities for pupils to develop essential dispositions, such as resilience, curiosity, and empathy, is vital. Integrating these attributes
into daily learning, ensures that pupils not only master their subjects, but also grow into confident, reflective, and well-rounded individuals.
Our development day provided sta at Bishop’s Stortford College with a chance to examine how foundational knowledge and skills can be reinforced and expanded as pupils move through the school. This collective approach has enabled us to better align our teaching strategies across year groups, creating a seamless and progressive journey for every pupil. Through this collaborative e ort, we are laying the groundwork for a curriculum that equips pupils with the tools to excel academically while also helping them to thrive personally and socially.
The 21st-century workplace is evolving at an unprecedented pace, with technological advancements and global challenges reshaping industries and creating new opportunities. Today’s learners must be equipped with more than academic
knowledge – they need the skills to adapt, the courage to innovate, and the resilience to navigate uncertainty.
Our curriculum review is grounded in this reality. By fostering an active and multidimensional approach to learning, we aim to empower our pupils to become lifelong learners and also compassionate and capable contributors to society. Learning at Bishop’s Stortford College is not a finite process but a transformative journey that extends far beyond the classroom.
As we continue our curriculum journey, we are reminded of the transformative power of education. In fostering a spiralised curriculum, we aim to honour the unique potential of each pupil, guiding them from curiosity-filled childhoods to confident young adulthoods. Together, we prepare them both for the uncertainties of the future and for the possibilities it holds.

Choosing the best Early Years setting for your child
When choosing the right Early Years setting for your child, it’s important to see what makes each place special. Although many nurseries and schools o er similar services, the best ones have unique features that stand out. The Oak-Tree Group of Schools is a prime example of excellence, with its engaging curriculum that supports all areas of a child’s growth.
EXPLORING THE OAK-TREE EARLY YEARS
The Oak-Tree Early Years Foundation Stages include Lower Kindergarten, Upper Kindergarten and Reception. The schools’ settings are both fun and safe, making them perfect places for children to grow and encouraging them to be curious, play and learn cooperation and respect.
CURRICULUM AND LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
At the Oak-Tree Schools, children as young as two and a half are immersed in
settings that encourage creativity and independence. Challenging activities are designed to build their social, communication and emotional skills through play and structured learning. The Lower and Upper Kindergarten classes focus on early literacy and numeracy, including specialist subjects such as Languages, Computing, Phonics and PE.
The schools also o er a multitude of after school clubs, fun educational trips and curriculum workshops that add more depth to the children’s learning experiences.
PREMISES AND FACILITIES
The layout and facilities of an Early Years setting should feature highly in your decision process. The Oak-Tree Schools use their surroundings in their grounds and locality to extend the learning beyond the classroom. This includes trips to Epping Forest, local fire stations, farms and nature parks as well as use of the well-equipped outdoor areas designed specifically for young children. Children have access to resources that, depending on the site, include libraries, computer suites, school halls, studios, extensive outside areas and banks of iPads.
CLASS SIZES
The Oak-Tree philosophy is to keep class sizes smaller than the norm, which means that teachers, teaching assistants and other support sta can give more focussed attention to each child. This helps to better understand and support each child’s learning needs, which they discuss regularly with parents as part of the ongoing formal and informal system of feedback. The schools keep to low child-to-sta ratios, meaning that more sta are always on hand to stretch and challenge the young children.
COMMUNITY
Starting at an Oak-Tree Kindergarten makes it easier for children to move up to Reception, Year 1 and beyond with the same cohort. There are no extra tests for moving up, which makes the transition smoother and lets children stay with their friends in a familiar setting. This consistency is important for the children’s sense of community and confidence, and often leads to a closer relationship between pupils and the school.

What do Trump’s tariffs mean for the housing market?
It is now over 60 years since former British Prime Minister Harold Wilson is reported to have made the now infamous remark that a “week is a long time in politics”.
However, as recent events have shown, it’s just as relevant today as it was back then – with President Trump’s trade tariffs prompting sharp drops in global stock markets and swinging cuts to economic forecasts.
The impact on the housing market
“West Essex remains a popular choice for would-be buyers.”
So, what does that all mean for property here in West Essex? The good news is that demand for homes in and around the ‘golden triangle’ of Loughton, Chigwell and Buckhurst Hill remains strong – with greatest activity for properties priced between £750,000 and £2.5m.
However, history tells us to expect a knock-on impact on housing markets, with buyers likely to become more cautious when they would normally be taking advantage of a spring buying season.
Despite a 90-day pause in the imposition of the highest tariff rates in most circumstances, at the time of writing, we are still left in a position of triple-digit tariffs between the US and China and 10% tariffs on US imports from other countries.

A more pragmatic negotiation of future trade terms would potentially feed through to the UK housing market. But it’s doubtful we will see a zen-like calm return this spring.
They trusted the agent that sold 40% more homes above £1m than anyone else.

Buyer confidence and price sensitivity
It is highly likely, if not inevitable, that there will be an impact on buyer confidence. This suggests we are set for more price sensitivity, particularly at the higher end of the property spectrum.
Overall this points to a needs-based market in the short term, where committed buyers and sellers come to the fore and demand for ‘best in class’ remains most resilient.
Given the relative security of UK bricks and mortar, we should see that supplemented by some more opportunistic and safe haven investment into the UK.
We also continue to expect interest rates to fall and mortgage markets to become more competitive. That should mean an easing in underlying affordability, gradually bringing more buyers into the market and underpinning prices over the medium term.
There is, then, some potential light on the horizon. West Essex – with its connectivity into London, high quality schools and appealing lifestyle – remains a popular choice for would-be buyers. But sensible pricing is key for those hoping to sell.

Pulling TOGETHER
James Hunt, co-founder
of Durden & Hunt,
on how the market is stronger when the major players join forces
The UK property market has experienced an incredible journey over the past year, driven by unique circumstances and a collective determination from everyone involved in the buying and selling process. One of the most notable periods was the surge of activity brought on by the stamp duty holiday deadline. This deadline created a whirlwind of movement, as buyers and sellers raced to complete their transactions in time to benefit from significant tax savings. What truly stood out during this time was the collaborative spirit across the industry. Buyers, sellers, estate agents, solicitors, and mortgage advisors all came together, working tirelessly under immense pressure. At Durden & Hunt, we witnessed firsthand the commitment and resilience of our clients and partners. There were long hours, fast turnarounds, and an unwavering focus on achieving those all-important
completions – and many did. It was a powerful reminder of what we can accomplish when everyone pulls in the same direction. Now, as we look beyond that deadline, I’m pleased to say the market has not slowed down – in fact, quite the opposite. Demand remains high. We are seeing a consistent stream of motivated buyers actively searching for their next home. Properties that are correctly priced and presented well are still selling quickly, often with multiple viewings and strong o ers. It’s a competitive, exciting time to be in the property market. There’s a renewed sense of confidence among both buyers and sellers. With interest rates holding steady, the appetite for property – whether as a personal move or an investment – remains strong. From family homes in desirable suburbs to modern apartments in thriving towns, the UK housing market continues to show its resilience and potential. If you’ve been thinking about selling, we would be delighted to provide you with a free market appraisal.

Denbury Homes evolved from Hopkins & Moore, formerly part of the Hopkins Group, which Lee led until 2022.
In joining Denbury Homes, Lee will oversee day-to-day operations.

The funding package from HSBC is expected to support the company as it looks to increase its build rate by 350 per cent with an ambition to be building up to 450 homes a year by 2029.
Denbury Homes fully launched its flagship development St Edmunds Gate, Bury St Edmunds, in January 2025. Lee continues: “St Edmunds Gate is a testament to our ambition; it will deliver in the region of 900 homes and contribute £15.5 million to the community through S106 payments.”
In Essex the company is currently building homes at Fallows Watch, Little Easton and Monarch Rise, Layer de la Haye. The show home opened at Little Easton in December last year, sales at Layer de la Haye launched in March and the show home will open in June.

Awardwinning Adam Architecture has created a portfolio that combines Denbury Homes’ commitment to traditional regional style with layouts and sustainability features that meet modern expectations.
Lee concludes: “We’ve enjoyed an excellent start to the year. With new launches and continued progress at existing developments we expect to build on this momentum. I’m looking forward to driving our continued success.”
