LETTER Editor’s

ABSOLUTELY’S December issue highlights

Iam one of these strange beings who finds it hard to relax. I always want to be doing something, I can't just veg out on the sofa and stick the TV on. I wish I could – but there is one exception.

When the Christmas break comes around, I tend to just crash. I save holiday up so I can take a proper chunk of time off, but as soon as my brain computes that it shuts down completely, encouraging me to actually take advantage of all those streaming services I subscribe to and generally find myself just flicking through all the possible things to watch before just falling asleep.

5

Christmas is the time when I properly catch up with my film and TV, which is why this month was absolutely perfect to revisit some of the Essex locations that have graced the small and big screen. What's more, you can visit them all and re-enact some of your favourite scenes, although for me that will be in 2026 as I will be finally embracing that sofa.

Talking sofas, our Absolutely Home special returns to offer some end of year inspiration to make your pad extra cosy this Christmas, plus there's plenty more to add to the general spirit of things.

Whatever you enjoy doing over this time, I hope it is a very merry one indeed!

Scene STEALERS

Want to catch up with your favourite shows or films this Christmas, but also want to be encouraged up o the sofa? This is just the feature for you

Let’s face it, Christmas is great for family and considering those important things in life – but it’s also perfect for lounging about on the sofa and devouring a whole bunch of TV programmes and films. What’s more, you can add a little local twist to your viewing this year.

Visit Essex, the county’s tourism organisation, is encouraging people to visit top historic film and TV locations in the county, naming the top 10 historic places with film and TV connections, with scenes used in Downton Abbey, Killing Eve and The Crown

We all love a top 10 rundown over the festivities, so here’s a list of historic film locations in Essex…

HYLAND ESTATE, CHELMSFORD

Hylands House and estate have featured in many productions over the years. The stunning Georgian white façade house has starred in Killing Eve and The Crown among others. Its fine columns have even doubled as the presidential White House. Hylands Estate has a rich history dating back to the early 18th century. The estate was originally built in 1730 by Sir John Comyns, a prominent lawyer, as a fine red-brick Georgian villa known as Hylands House. Over the centuries, it underwent significant expansions and redesigns, notably in the early 19th century when owner Pierre César Labouchère commissioned architect Humphry Repton to remodel both the house and its surrounding parkland in the fashionable neoclassical style. Later owners, including

Sir Daniel Gooch and John Attwood, further enhanced the estate, which became a centre of social life and innovation. During both World Wars, Hylands served as a military base and later as a prisonerof-war camp. In 1966, Chelmsford City Council purchased the estate, restoring it to its former grandeur. Hylands Estate is open to the public and Hylands House welcomes visitors at its regular open days.

INGATESTONE HALL

Ingatestone Hall is an imposing 16th century manor house that retains all its Tudor charm. Thanks to its historic appeal, the hall was used for filming exterior shots of the BBC’s adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Bleak House Ingatestone Hall was built around 1540 by

Sir William Petre, Secretary of State to four Tudor monarchs – Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I, and Elizabeth I. Constructed from mellow red brick with characteristic gables and chimneys, it replaced an earlier moated manor nearby. The Petre family has owned Ingatestone Hall continuously for nearly five centuries, making it one of the bestpreserved examples of a family estate from Tudor England. Over the centuries, the Hall has witnessed significant historical events, including visits from Queen Elizabeth I and the sheltering of Catholic priests during the Reformation. Though parts of the house were altered in later periods, much of its original character remains intact, including the Great Hall and priest holes. Guided tours of the red-brick mansion are available.

AUDLEY END HOUSE AND GARDENS

Audley End House and Gardens is a magnificent 17th century mansion with stunning landscaped grounds. It’s the former home to Lords, Ladies, Earls and Sirs, so it is no wonder that the house was featured in The Crown Audley End House, near Sa ron Walden, is one of England’s grandest Jacobean mansions. Originally built by Thomas Howard, 1st Earl of Su olk, it was designed to impress King James I and to reflect the Howard family’s wealth and influence. The mansion, reputedly one of the largest private homes in England, replaced the former Benedictine monastery of Walden Abbey. Though vast in scale, Audley End proved costly to maintain, leading to parts being demolished in the 18th century. Later, architect Robert Adam remodelled sections of the house in a more refined neoclassical style, while Lancelot “Capability” Brown landscaped the surrounding parkland. Today, visitors can enjoy days out upstairs and downstairs at the English Heritage owned attraction.

AUDLEY END HOUSE

HEDINGHAM CASTLE

The Norman keep, near Halstead, is a heritage treasure. The venue has been used for a wide variety of TV and film, from Married at First Sight, to comedian Noel Fielding starring as Dick Turpin in the Apple TV+ comedy series The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin Hedingham Castle is one of the bestpreserved Norman keeps in England. Built around 1140 by Aubrey de Vere, the first Earl of Oxford, the castle served as the stronghold of the powerful de Vere family for over 500 years. Its magnificent stone keep, rising more than 70 feet high, showcases remarkable Norman architecture, with finely carved arches and an impressive great hall. During the medieval period, Hedingham played host to several royal visits, including King Henry II and King John. Over time, as military needs declined, the de Vere family transformed the surrounding grounds into a more comfortable Tudor residence.

TILBURY FORT

Tilbury Fort was used in Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster film, Batman Begins. The fort’s foreboding architecture gave the prison scenes real character, as star of the film, Christian Bale, discovered as he tried to escape their walls.

Tilbury Fort has played a key role in England’s coastal defences for over 450 years. The site’s military history began under Henry VIII, who built the original D-shaped blockhouse in the 1530s as part of his chain of coastal forts to protect London from invasion. The fort gained fame in 1588 when Queen Elizabeth I addressed her troops nearby during the threat of the Spanish Armada. In the late 17th century, the fort was completely rebuilt under Charles II and designed by Dutch engineer Sir Bernard de Gomme.

ELECTRIC PALACE, HARWICH

The Electric Palace cinema is one of the oldest cinemas, which still has its original screen and ornate frontage intact. The cinema’s original features made it an irresistible location for scenes in the film Downton Abbey, A New Era. The film’s location manager was quoted as saying the “cinema was beautiful and they had to use it”. Actress Michelle Dockery, who played Lady Mary Crawley, shot scenes in and around the cinema.

The Electric Palace was designed by architect Harold Ridley Hooper and constructed in 1911 for local entrepreneur Charles Thurston, opening just as cinema was emerging as a popular new form of entertainment. The building is notable for its distinctive Edwardian façade and remarkable survival – many early cinemas of its kind have long disappeared. Equipped originally with a silent film projector and an ornamental proscenium arch, the

Electric Palace o ered audiences a magical early cinema experience. It operated continuously until 1956, when it closed and fell into disrepair. After a successful local campaign, restoration began in the 1970s, and the cinema reopened in 1981 as both a working picture house and heritage venue.

BRIGHTLINGSEA HARBOUR

The Apple TV+ production of The Essex Serpent was filmed in many locations across the county, but the Brightlingsea Harbour was also one of the locations used for the fictional village of Aldwinter.

Brightlingsea Harbour, situated on the River Colne estuary, has a long maritime history dating back to Roman times, when the sheltered waters provided an ideal anchorage. By the medieval period, Brightlingsea had become an important limb of the Cinque Port of Sandwich, contributing ships and sailors to the Crown. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the harbour thrived on coastal

trade, shipbuilding, and oyster fishing, with its renowned oyster beds supplying London and beyond. Brightlingsea also developed a strong connection to the Royal Navy, providing men and vessels during both World Wars. In the 20th century, as commercial shipping declined, the harbour evolved into a hub for yachting, fishing, and leisure boating. Managed today by the Brightlingsea Harbour Commissioners, it remains a working harbour that blends traditional maritime activity with tourism and recreation.

STOW MARIES GREAT WAR AERODROME, MALDON

The intriguing Channel 5 documentary The Secret Life of Owls was shot at Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome. The aerodrome is the last of its kind in the UK and is also home to all five native British owls. Hidden cameras were set up around the aerodrome and caught some stunning footage.

Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome is the most complete surviving First World War airfield in Britain. Built in 1916, it was part of the Royal Flying Corps’ network of home defence stations, established to counter German Zeppelin and Gotha bomber raids. The site was home to No. 37 (Home Defence) Squadron, which flew aircraft such

as the BE2 and SE5a. After the Armistice in 1918, the aerodrome briefly continued operations before closing in 1919, its buildings later repurposed for agriculture. Remarkably, the original hangars, workshops, and barracks survived largely untouched for decades. Rediscovered in the 1990s, Stow Maries has since undergone major restoration and is now a living museum dedicated to early military aviation.

HADLEIGH COUNTRY PARK

The film Boudica: Queen of War was partly filmed at Hadleigh Country Park, near Southend. The film recreated an Iron Age roundhouse for Boudica to rebel against the Romans. Although the roundhouse was taken down after filming, the park still o ers a magnificent environment with reaching views across the Thames Estuary.

Hadleigh Country Park has a rich and varied history shaped by centuries of human activity. The park’s landscape was originally farmland and grazing pasture, with traces of ancient field systems and Iron Age earthworks still visible today. Overlooking the park is Hadleigh Castle, a 13th-century fortification built by Hubert de Burgh, whose dramatic ruins remain a key landmark. The surrounding land later became part of the Salvation Army’s

Hadleigh Farm Estate, founded in the 1890s by General William Booth as a pioneering social enterprise to provide training and employment for the poor. In 2012, Hadleigh Country Park gained international attention as the venue for the London Olympic mountain biking events.

EPPING FOREST

The trees of Epping Forest gave the perfect backdrop for The Witcher fantasy series three. The forest’s Strawberry Hill Ponds were the setting for the Belleteyn Festival. Epping Forest is an ancient woodland with a history spanning over 1,000 years. Once part of the Royal Forest of Essex, it was used by monarchs such as Henry VIII and Elizabeth I for hunting deer and recreation. Its status as a royal forest meant it was protected under forest law, preserving its natural character for centuries. By the 19th century, however, growing urban development threatened the forest’s survival. Public campaigns to protect it led to the Epping Forest Act of 1878, which placed the forest under the care of the City of London Corporation, ensuring its preservation for public enjoyment. Visit the 2,400-hectare ancient woodland – and be sure not to meet any monsters.

TOAST to the COAST

The Pier in Harwich is well-known for laying on quite the Christmas spread, and Head Chef Cavan Tuckwell tells us to expect the bar to be raised even further this year

The Pier in Harwich is more than a waterfront landmark – it represents the spirit, heritage, and hospitality of this historic coastal town.

Standing proudly on the harbour where the Stour and Orwell rivers meet the North Sea, The Pier embraces Harwich’s long maritime tradition, o ering a welcoming gateway for visitors arriving from near and far. It symbolises a blend of past and present: once a focal point for sea trade, naval heritage, and exploration, it is now a destination that celebrates fine food, relaxation, and coastal charm.

At its heart, The Pier stands for quality and warmth. It champions locally sourced seafood, showcasing the flavours of the Essex coast with pride and creativity. With views across the bustling harbour and the working waters beyond, it invites people to slow down, savour the moment, and appreciate both the natural beauty and the cultural richness of the area. The Pier also embodies a sense of community and connection, serving as a gathering place for locals and travellers alike. Whether through its boutique accommodation, its dining experiences,

“I love that we are in a coastal town with good access to local produce”

or its role in promoting Harwich’s maritime story, The Pier continues to uphold the values of authenticity, comfort, and timeless coastal hospitality.

And that hospitality truly comes into its own over the festive period. Head Chef, Cavan Tuckwell, invited Absolutely down for an early sneak peek at what to expect, as well as discussing his own journey through some of the finest Essex dining dsetibations.

Q Can you give us an overview of your career in the food industry to date before coming to The Pier at Harwich?

A I started working at The Boatyard in Dedham at 16 years of age and stayed for four years before moving onto Milsoms, also in Dedham, as a demi chef de partie. I worked in the Milsoms kitchen for one year before transferring to the fine

dining Talbooth restaurant. I plied my trade there for six and a half years before arriving at The Pier 18 months ago.

Q What do you love about where The Pier is based?

A I love that it is a vibrant coastal town with good access to local produce.

Q How would you describe your culinary style, and how do you incorporate local ingredients into your dishes?

A I mainly focus on a modern approach to classic dishes whilst using shellfish sourced from local fishermen.

Q Can you share a signature dish that you’re particularly proud of, and what makes it special?

A Pan seared fillet of halibut, cumin roasted butternut squash, charred Rosco onion, squash purée and a brown shrimp butter. I enjoy this dish as it enables me to showcase my love of seafood.

CAVAN TUCKWELL

Q How do you approach menu development, especially when introducing seasonal or special occasion menus?

A By speaking to local suppliers and wholesalers about in season products, and then bring in the senior kitchen team to bounce ideas o of each other.

Q What role does sustainability play in your kitchen, and how do you ensure waste reduction and ethical sourcing?

A Sustainability is at the heart of how we operate our kitchens, it influences everything from menu planning to supplier relationships. We see it as both an environmental responsibility and a way to deliver higher-quality food to our guests. Our goal is to create exceptional dishes while minimising our footprint and supporting a more ethical food system. When it comes to waste reduction, we take a proactive, system based approach. We practice whole ingredient utilisation; for example, vegetable trimmings go into stocks and stale bread becomes breadcrumbs or croutons. We plan menus around seasonal availability to reduce excess inventory, and we train our team on portion control and proper storage to prevent spoilage. Any unavoidable organic waste is composted or diverted for local farms where possible. For ethical sourcing, we prioritise working with local farmers, fisheries, and artisans who share our values. We source produce that’s seasonal and grown through sustainable or regenerative methods,

“Sustainability in our kitchen isn’t just a policy, it’s part of our culture”

and we select meats and seafood from suppliers with transparent, humane, and environmentally responsible practices. We also choose fair trade options for imported goods like co ee, chocolate, and spices. Ultimately, sustainability in our kitchen isn’t just a policy, it’s part of our culture. It’s about respecting ingredients, the people who produce them, and the community we serve.

Q The Pier is known for its festive o erings. Could you walk us through the inspiration behind this year’s Christmas menu?

A The main aim for our festive menus was to create refined versions of traditional classic dishes. For me, Christmas is all about comfort, nostalgia, and generosity. Those warm, familiar notes of cinnamon, clove, roasted meats, and rich sauces. I like to honour those foundations, but I’ll introduce modern techniques or unexpected pairings to elevate the experience. For example, I might take a classic roast turkey and serve it with a cranberry gel and spiced jus reduction, or rework a Christmas pudding into a deconstructed dessert with brandy espuma and toasted fruit crumble. The flavours are instantly recognisable, but the presentation and textures spark curiosity. It’s also about balance: too much innovation and you lose the soul of the dish; too little and it feels predictable. I try to create a journey, guests taste the essence of Christmas, but in a way they’ve never quite experienced before. That sense of comfort and surprise is what makes it memorable.

Q What are some standout dishes on the 2025 Christmas Celebration Menu, and what makes them unique?

A One standout dish on our 2025 Christmas Celebration Menu is the smoked haddock rarebit fishcake with dill emulsion, pickled shallot & lobster bisque. This dish is a real showcase of balance and craftsmanship. It takes familiar British comfort flavours and elevates them into something refined yet nostalgic. The base of the dish, a smoked haddock fishcake, captures that rich, savoury depth we associate with winter. The rarebit topping brings a creamy sharpness, adding a luxurious layer of mature cheddar and mustard heat that cuts through the seafood beautifully.

Q What kind of atmosphere can we expect to enjoy over the Christmas season?

A A warm welcome and a homely feel! I am sure that it will be busy for the whole festive season so the atmosphere will be good all the time.

Q Looking ahead, what are the plans for The Pier in 2026?

A My main aim for 2026 is to push forwards and keep the standard of the food progressing all of the time. I will be trying to introduce new ideas onto our menus whilst still keeping the focus on local seafood. I am also in the process of writing a five course tasting menu for the new year, so watch this space!

Tilsmore

Time to sparkle…

Hidden among rolling hills near Mayfield, Tilsmore feels like the kind of place where time slows down –all woodland walks, open skies, and the quiet rhythm of rural Sussex life. Planted in 2017, this family-run estate is cradled by ancient forest and shaped by the distinctive Wealden landscape, with its gentle slopes and cool climate lending elegance to the wines.

Tilsmore champions small-scale, sustainable winemaking, producing no more than a couple of thousand bottles per vintage. Each release –from the elegant, citrus-driven Brut to the intricate, red-berry Rosé – is made by the traditional method and aged patiently on its lees to develop depth and finesse.

Designed as thoughtfully as it’s made, every bottle is finished with bespoke artwork inspired by local folklore, reflecting the spirit of the estate and conveying a refined sense of luxury. That level of care – along with the wines’ graceful, expressive character – makes Tilsmore a perfect choice for the festive table.

STRONGER SMARTER SIMPLER

The benefits of working out at home with hand weights and bands

In the age of convenience, more people are ditching crowded gyms for home-based workouts – and for good reason. You don’t need bulky machines or expensive memberships to build strength, improve flexibility, and boost your overall health. With just a set of hand weights and resistance bands, your living room can become your own personal fitness studio.

1. MAXIMUM RESULTS, MINIMAL EQUIPMENT

Hand weights and resistance bands may be small, but their impact is anything but. Dumbbells allow for targeted muscle engagement, whether you’re performing

equipment, and juggling your schedule can sabotage the best intentions. But working out at home removes all those barriers. In just 20-30 minutes a day, you can get a full-body workout with minimal setup and zero travel. Hand weights and bands also encourage consistency. Their portability means you can keep them visible – in a basket by the couch or under your desk – so it’s easier to squeeze in a quick set during a break or between meetings. And consistency is the real secret to fitness success.

3.

LOW IMPACT, HIGH REWARD

Resistance bands are especially popular for people recovering from injuries or looking for a lower-impact option. They provide controlled resistance that’s easier on the joints while still strengthening muscles. Similarly, hand weights o er a manageable step up from bodyweight exercises without overloading the body. These tools also promote better form and balance. Unlike machines that guide your motion, free weights and bands force your body to stabilize itself. That means you’re not just working individual muscles –you’re also strengthening your core and improving coordination with every move.

4. COST-EFFECTIVE AND SPACE-SAVING

bicep curls, shoulder presses, or squats. Meanwhile, resistance bands – lightweight and incredibly versatile – can add challenge to virtually any exercise, promoting muscle activation and control.

These tools let you modify intensity on the fly. Want a heavier workout? Grab a thicker band or increase your dumbbell weight. Prefer a lighter session? Adjust accordingly. This flexibility means your workout evolves with you, whether you’re a beginner or already in great shape.

2. SAVE TIME, STAY CONSISTENT

One of the biggest hurdles to fitness is time. Commuting to the gym, waiting for

You don’t need a dedicated home gym to get in shape. A couple of hand weights and a few resistance bands can cost less than a single month’s gym membership. They take up hardly any space and can be stored in a drawer, closet, or under the bed when not in use. Plus, there are countless free workout videos and apps tailored to weights and bands, so you’ll never run out of routines to try. Whether you’re following a 10-minute core session or a full 45-minute strength circuit, you can progress without spending a dime more.

Fitness doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. With a pair of hand weights and a set of resistance bands, you can build a consistent, e ective, and sustainable workout habit from the comfort of your home. It’s not just about convenience – it’s about taking control of your health on your terms.

HISTORY HOME OF

Absolutely explores a stunning Grade II listed property in Colchester, set within two acres of beautiful grounds

Moat Hall was built in the Georgian period and has been carefully restored to create a fine country home that offers over 5,000 sq ft of impeccable accommodation, perfectly suited for modern life. Each room enjoys spectacular views of either the moat or pretty landscaped gardens. The property combines charming period character with a contemporary feel, located on the outskirts of the popular village of Fordham. Surrounding the property is land owned by The Woodland Trust.

The formal entrance at the front of the house opens into a generously proportioned reception hallway, with an attractive turned spindle staircase ascending to the first and second floors. From here, all of the principal reception rooms can be accessed, including the drawing room and dining room, both with two sash windows overlooking the formal front garden. The drawing room features a resplendent stone fireplace with

inset log burner, whilst the dining room has an open fire with large brick chimney breast, stone hearth and bressummer.

A passageway leads through to the stylish and spacious sitting room, benefitting from a delightful dual aspect with views of the walled garden on one side, and the moat and orchard on the other. There are two integrated walnut storage cabinets, including a bespoke ‘close-away’ desk and an elegant glass drinks cabinet. A striking feature in this room is the vast brick inglenook fireplace.

The kitchen/breakfast room is superb with a high vaulted ceiling incorporating exposed timbers. It has underfloor heating and a wonderful dual aspect with French doors leading out to the terrace, perfect for summer entertaining. The bespoke ‘Orwells of Ipswich’ kitchen has a range of hand painted units with granite and stone work surfaces, and a double larder cupboard. There are two sinks, a Quooker tap, a waste disposal incinerator, separate filtered drinking water tap, and a dishwasher to one side. There is also a Fisher & Paykel French door refrigeration freezer. The focal point of the kitchen is the Everhot, with three independently controlled ovens, an additional plate warming oven, cast iron hot and simmer plates, and a three-zone induction hob. The island has a marble top and space for an additional oven. There is also space for a large American style fridge/freezer.

Accessed from the rear hall is an impressive boot room with an extensive range of fitted storage cabinets, a central seating unit, fridge/ freezer, and a good sized cool room/larder

The moat is home to a springtime brood of ducklings and a variety of fish

Accessed via electric gates, a shingle driveway leads to a parking area and double bay cart lodge, with a secure garage. Adjacent to this is the plant room serving the games room, guest house and swimming pool.

The games room provides ample space for both a pool table and cinema seating and has a bar with sink and fridge. This building would also make a fairly large external office or gym. A five bar gate leads from the driveway to a courtyard with an enclosed dog run and kennel, and a listed barn, currently used as a workshop.

cupboard. Opposite is the laundry, with a large butler sink and plumbing for two washing machines and two tumble dryers. There is also a downstairs cloakroom and separate staircase to the first floor.

The first-floor landing is reached via the main staircase in the reception hall and provides access to the principal and guest suites. The principal suite comprises three rooms; the bedroom with feature fireplace, en-suite and large dressing room. The ensuite bathroom has a stunning antique French, ball and claw foot slipper bath, screened WC and bidet, and a bespoke marble double washbasin. An artist designed the walk-in corner shower with mosaic tiled walls and floor, and a feature fireplace with marble hearth. From here, a door leads into an L-shaped room, currently used as a dressing room, which could alternatively be used as a nursery/further bedroom, with a separate door to the rear landing. The guest suite has an en-suite shower room and a large walk-in wardrobe.

On the second floor are three double bedrooms, all with walk-in or built-in wardrobes, a family bathroom and a separate cloakroom with WC. The family bathroom has a corner bath, WC, tiled shower cubicle, washbasin, cast iron radiator and underfloor heating. The rear landing has a separate staircase to the first floor, so each bedroom has its own access.

To the right of the driveaway lies a secluded entrance to the heated swimming pool set with flagstone tiling, where there is ample space for a dining table and sun loungers. The current pool guest house with en-suite wet room would be perfect as an annexe or ‘Airbnb’, or converted back to a pool room/kitchenette for entertaining.

To the immediate rear of the property is a delightful sun terrace overlooking the moat, tennis court and gardens beyond. The moat is home to a springtime brood of ducklings and a variety of fish.

A bridge over the moat leads to the formal gardens, which are predominantly west facing and laid to lawn, with a variety of established shrubs, trees and hedging, including a small orchard and vegetable/soft fruit garden. There is a floodlit allweather surface tennis court with a small pavilion and a substantial meadow beyond with separate gated access from Chappel Road. To the front of the property, on the opposite side of the road, is a large enclosed ‘wild garden’ under the ownership of the vendors, bordered by a greensward area with Woodland Trust land behind, which protects the front of the property.

Moat Hall is part of Fenn Wright’s selective Signature Collection and is currently on the market for offers in excess of £1,500,000. For more details, call 01206 216543 or visit fennwright.co.uk

BEAUTY

Since 1947, Jensen

Beds has been crafting highquality beds in Norway – combining passion, science and craftsmanship to help you achieve a good night’s sleep

Beauty sleep isn’t just a saying – it’s science. Research shows that people are perceived as more attractive when well-rested, and that lack of sleep affects not only mood, but also skin and immune function. Good sleep is essential for how we look, feel and perform.

When you sleep well, your body gets the time it needs to repair itself, regenerate cells and clear away waste. It’s during deep, restorative sleep that both body and mind truly recover.

Sleep is a vital beauty secret that works wonders from inside out. During deep sleep, our body enters a highly regenerative state, where skin cells repair and renew themselves. This process boosts collagen production, a key protein that

keeps skin firmer and elastic, helping to prevent wrinkles and sagging. Without enough good sleep, collagen production slow downs, contributing to premature ageing and dull complexion.

Also, sleep reduces the stress hormone cortisol, which when elevated, causes inflammation, breakouts, and sensitive skin issues. Good sleep promotes blood flow to skin, delivering essential nutrients and oxygen for a radiant glow. Lack of sleep disrupts skin’s moisture balance, leading to dryness and fine lines, and increases dark circles and puffiness around eyes.

Scientific studies indicate that the critical hours between 9 pm and midnight are the best time for skin healing. So regular, restful sleep isn’t only for feeling fresh – it’s crucial for youthful, vibrant skin.

Prioritising sleep is perhaps the most effective, natural way to maintain beauty over a long time.

DECOR

Christmas styling: how to make a big impact with minimal effort

When it comes to Christmas decorating, I truly believe that creating a beautiful, festive home doesn’t need to involve endless hours, or a trail of pine needles behind you. The secret lies in focusing on a few key pieces that make a statement and ensuring they all work together by sticking to a simple style and colour theme that brings cohesion throughout your home. With the right foundations and a few thoughtful touches, it’s easy to create a big impact with a look that feels luxurious, calm, and full of festive warmth, without the stress or the mess.

FAUX WREATHS AND GARLANDS – QUALITY OVER QUANTITY

Nothing says Christmas quite like a wreath on the door or a garland draped across a mantel. Faux versions are an ideal choice for those looking to decorate with minimal fuss – there’s no need to worry about wilting

foliage or ongoing maintenance. Simply fluff and shape the branches to give them volume, and finish with a simple large bow in your chosen colour theme to make a big impact with minimal effort.

When choosing your wreaths and garlands, opt for the best quality foliage you can find. Realistic versions of traditional festive greenery such as fir, pine, cedar and larix are timeless options that never go out of style. By investing in a great base, you can reinvent your wreaths and garlands each year to suit your décor. Simply change your accent colour from deep red to bronze, for example, with a quick swap of ribbon to create a fresh new look without starting from scratch.

FAUX FLORALS FOR INSTANT ATMOSPHERE

Faux stems are one of my go-to styling essentials for the festive season. They offer the same beauty and texture as real flowers, but without the upkeep or time constraints. When choosing your pieces, start with good quality foliage that you can use again and

Big impact doesn't have to mean more decor. Sometimes the most effective styling is about restraint

again, such as eucalyptus, fir, spruce or larix. Then, introduce a few accent stems like red ilex berries, pinecones or branches for texture and warmth.

Rather than dotting a few smaller arrangements around, I recommend creating one large statement arrangement in a key area of your home – perhaps on a console in the hallway or on a pedestal in the lounge. It makes a much greater impact while still keeping things simple.

You can always add to your collection of faux stems to lean into a new colour theme, but if you’ve got the foliage foundation right, you’ll save yourself time and effort every year by having a great base to build from.

A TREE THAT SHINES ON ITS OWN

When it comes to the Christmas tree, simplicity can be every bit as impactful as a fully dressed design. I love the look of a tree adorned with nothing but warm white lights. It feels timeless, elegant, and effortlessly serene. The key is to double up on your lighting for a considered, luxurious glow that instantly elevates the space. Finish with a statement topper, such as a large bow or star, for an eyecatching focal point that requires minimal effort but delivers maximum impact.

SET THE MOOD WITH LIGHTING

I always recommend using LED tapered dinner candles that gently flicker, giving the same soft, atmospheric glow as real candlelight, but without the worry of melting wax. A few elegant candlesticks clustered in varying heights on a sideboard, or arranged on one end of the mantel, is a beautifully simple way to add drama and depth, with almost no effort at all.

To subtly tie your theme together, consider adding a thin ribbon bow around the base of each candlestick and let the tails drape down. It’s a low effort way to echo your festive colour palette throughout your home, and the ribbons can be easily removed once the festive season is over.

SIMPLIFY YOUR SURFACES

Big impact doesn’t have to mean more décor. In fact, sometimes the most effective styling is about restraint. Less is more. Be selective and choose a few key elements that can be used throughout your home to create

cohesion and impact with ease. A large statement faux wreath on the front door, a sweeping garland on the fireplace finished with a velvet bow, a statement floral arrangement, a vintage bowl filled with pinecones on the coffee table, and a cluster of candlesticks in varying heights on the console table. Together, these few pieces can transform your space without overwhelming it.

THE BEAUTY OF LOWEFFORT LUXURY

The joy of minimal-effort styling is that it allows you to focus on what matters most – enjoying the season. Investing in high-quality faux pieces means you can build your collection over time, reusing and refreshing your favourites each year. Don’t overcomplicate it, pick a theme, repeat elements throughout your key rooms, and you’ll create a look that feels cohesive, timeless, and effortlessly elegant.

Be my GUEST

Create the ultimate retreat for your friends and family this festive season

Making guests feel effortlessly comfortable and subtly pampered is the ultimate goal when welcoming them into your home. Achieving this requires a delicate balance between understated luxury and genuine, practical comforts. From the moment visitors step through the door, every element should convey thoughtful intention, signalling that the space has been carefully curated with their needs in mind.

A guest bedroom, in particular, should radiate the warmth and familiarity of home, while simultaneously reflecting the refined elegance and effortless style of a boutique hotel. When executed well, this harmony ensures that guests feel both cared for and enveloped in an atmosphere of calm serenity – from sumptuous linens and soft, ambient lighting to carefully selected décor that transforms the room into a truly exceptional retreat. Spare rooms are often overlooked, yet with just a few thoughtful interventions, they can be transformed into inviting, glamorous spaces that leave a lasting impression.

Begin by considering how your guests will use the room, adopting their perspective to anticipate needs and comfort. Simple additions can elevate a bedroom from functional to welcoming. A footstool or bench at the end of the bed, paired with a soft

Ensure guests feel cared for and enveloped in calm serenity

throw, instantly creates a sense of retreat. An accent chair, complemented by a plush cushion and a contemporary wall light, can turn an unused corner into a cosy reading nook. By weaving these subtle touches into the room’s layout, the guest bedroom becomes a seamless blend of style, comfort and considered hospitality.

Thoughtful details make all the difference in making guests feel truly welcome. A small collection of wellchosen books signals that their interests have been considered, offering a space to unwind and linger. A bedside tray, adorned with a candle, diffuser, or a touch of greenery, paired with layered lighting, enhances the mood while providing practical control for guests to adjust the ambiance to their preference. These curated elements ensure that comfort is never compromised for style.

Even in the smallest rooms, clever design can maximise functionality while maintaining a sense of refined elegance. Highlighting overlooked corners with a slim console and chair, for instance, creates purpose without crowding the space. Consider how the room can serve beyond an overnight stay, perhaps as a dressing area, a morning coffee nook, or a temporary workspace for longer visits. Bringing in natural elements, such as large indoor plants, woven textures and botanical art adds tranquillity, whilst a dedicated luggage drop zone with an ottoman bench, wall hooks and baskets ensure convenience and order. With a few well-considered additions, even the most underused corners can become highlights, creating a guest experience that feels both polished and personal.

YEAR-ROUND

LIVING

Make the most of your outdoor space with Crown Pavilions’ garden rooms, gazebos and equestrian spaces

As December’s early dusk falls and the garden takes on its winter silhouette, luxury outdoor living often seems to retreat. But for homeowners who demand the best, the garden shouldn’t hibernate; it should perform. That’s where Crown Pavilions steps in, with its bespoke garden rooms, handcrafted wooden gazebos, and premium equestrian buildings. Each is engineered to deliver elegance, comfort, and style throughout the year, not just when the sun shines.

Winter is a pivotal moment for the garden, a time when many spaces become purely decorative or unused. Yet it’s precisely during these colder months that the right structure, if well insulated, thoughtfully designed, and weatherproofed, can transform your garden into a true year-round extension of your home. Crown Pavilions emphasises that its buildings are created for all-year-round use. Their gazebos incorporate marinegrade blinds that zip together to create a weatherproof seal, infrared ceiling heaters, and solid infill panels. These features ensure that no matter the weather, the space remains cosy, comfortable, and inviting throughout winter.

Garden Rooms For All Seasons

While the term garden room might evoke the long days of spring or summer, discerning buyers recognise that it should be just as usable in December as it is in June. Crown Pavilions’ bespoke garden rooms are fully insulated, doubleglazed, and built to residential-grade standards. Each is designed to withstand the cold and deliver everyday comfort. Picture this: a garden room serving as your home office or gym on a crisp December morning. Fog drifts over bare trees outside, yet inside you’re warm, focused, and inspired. The pitched-roof Heritage Collection, for instance, offers exceptional ceiling height, skylights,

and slimline electric heaters with thermostats. Every detail is designed to help you enjoy the space far beyond the summer-only mindset.

Gazebos: Al Fresco Living Without Compromise

Then there are the gazebos, often thought of as summer “party huts” or open-air lounges. Crown Pavilions challenges that assumption. Their luxury wooden gazebos feature design innovations that are ideal for winter, including full-height marinegrade blinds that zip shut, robust timber posts, cedar-shingle roofs, and integrated heating options.

Imagine hosting an early-evening December cocktail party beneath your gazebo’s roof. Lights shimmer across the frost-touched lawn while a gentle heater hums above. The structure keeps out the chill, becoming a true living room for the outdoors. As the brochure puts it, “You want to be certain that your gazebo won’t simply look stunning in the spring, summer and autumn, but that it will also cope with British winters.”

Crown Equestrian

Beyond the garden, Crown Equestrian brings the same uncompromising quality to stables, barns, tack rooms, and riding arenas. Built for performance, safety, and visual harmony, these structures complement their rural surroundings while providing outstanding durability and functionality.

From private estates to professional equestrian facilities, Crown’s bespoke approach ensures every design meets the needs of both horse and rider. Each structure is created with architectural detailing, superior materials, and true all-weather practicality.

Why Choose Crown Pavilions?

What sets Crown Pavilions apart is not only the product, but the service and craftsmanship behind it. The company carries the prestigious Marque of Excellence and is TRADA-certified, meaning every timber joint, panel, and finish is engineered to last.

With over 20 years of British craftsmanship and thousands of installations across the UK and Europe, including many for high-profile clients, Crown Pavilions has earned its reputation as ‘The World’s Finest Garden Rooms and Gazebos’.

For those who expect true luxury, the extras matter. From bespoke finishes and engineered oak flooring to fully customised layouts, integrated lighting and heating, every detail is considered to make your garden building feel like part of the home, not an add-on.

Visit a Crown Pavilions Show Site

“Our kitchens don't just look good, they are built properly too”

PERSONAL APPROACH

The founder of Kitchens by Guy, Guy Carter , on starting early, growing quickly and building trust

Q Was a career in design always on the cards for you?

A No, not really. I actually stumbled into kitchen design by luck. When I was 16, I hated school and would’ve done anything to leave. My parents said I could as long as I got a job. My dad, who now works with me, got me a job with a local builder who had a great reputation. He mainly fitted kitchens, but did all kinds of building work. I soon found a passion for kitchens, but it was a shoulder injury that pushed me into designing them rather than doing the manual graft.

Q Before launching your own business, what was your working background?

A I spent years on the tools fitting kitchens, doing building work, learning what actually works on site. That background helps massively now because I design with practicality in mind. Our kitchens don’t just look good, they’re built properly. I also worked for a high street retailer for seven years, so I knew exactly the type of business I wanted to build, the complete opposite of what they offer.

Q What inspired you to go it alone?

A I wanted to bridge the gap between high street retailers and handmade kitchens. I got tired of seeing corners cut and clients being let down. I wanted to do things properly, honestly, transparently, and personally. I started with a laptop, a van, and a vision. It’s grown faster than I could’ve imagined, but the standards have never dropped.

Q How do you want Kitchens by Guy to stand out?

A We’re not a faceless company, we’re familyrun and hands-on. Everything’s built on trust, quality, and straight talking. No sales pitch, no hidden costs, just great design and craftsmanship at a fair price. That’s what sets us apart. We offer quality products at affordable prices.

Q Can you share a couple of stand out projects?

A We recently completed a bespoke shaker kitchen in Waltham Abbey. It had 150mm pi-

lasters, a large working mantle, breakfast pantry and more. All painted in a Little Greene colour called Invisible Green. I’m also a big fan of Scandi-style kitchens. One of our recent projects mixed oak veneer panels with smooth matte cashmere doors. Minimal, warm, and beautifully balanced.

Q What can people expect in your Ongar showroom?

A To feel welcome. We appreciate every client, no matter the budget. We’re built on honesty and trust. It’s a small boutique showroom packed with displays and samples for you to touch and feel. We tell you what we really think, not what we think you want to hear.

Q What’s next for Kitchens by Guy?

A Growth. Every year we’ve doubled turnover, and I plan to keep that up. We’re becoming a recognised brand for all the right reasons. In 2026, I plan to move into a much larger showroom and take the business to the next level.

LIGHTS

“What seem like a million twinkling lights bring the festive season to life while a gospel choir takes things to a higher plane”

Lake Como's Villa d'Este is a showstopper at any time of year, but at Christmas time it is magic

it’s an irresistible combination of serene landscapes and refined Italian style, making Lake Como one of Europe’s most enchanting and glamorous destinations.

And nowhere is this more apparent than at the legendary hotel Villa d’Este on the shores of the lake in the village of Cernobbio. Since 1893, this five-star resort has been one of the most celebrated worldwide. And now the hotel is pulling out all the stops to create a Christmas wonderland with a dazzling light display – an extravaganza that we’re going to be part of.

Perfectly positioned in the foothills of the Italian Alps, Lake Como is a shimmering jewel of northern Italy, renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty and timeless glamour. The lake’s deep blue waters

reflect the surrounding peaks and lush, cypress-lined hillsides, while elegant villas and terraced gardens cascade down to the water’s edge. Long a retreat and inspiration for artists, aristocrats, and Hollywood stars, including George and Amal Clooney, the Versace family, and Richard Branson,

Villa d’Este is a short drive from Milan (just 30 minutes), and the first glimpse of Lake Como, shimmering and serene, elicits a quiet gasp of wonder. The first of many. As the grand wrought-iron gates to our hotel swing open, they reveal a tree-lined drive that winds gracefully toward the arrival court, where a stately fountain welcomes us.

From that very first moment, there’s an undeniable sense that we’ve arrived somewhere exceptional. Stepping through the entrance into the majestic reception hall, our gaze is immediately drawn outward, where the lake reveals itself once again. Lake Como is not merely a backdrop here, it is a constant, breathtaking presence – as much a part of the experience as the hotel itself.

Before long we’re seated in the Green House restaurant enjoying a mouthwatering plate of homemade pasta with tru es (it’s tru e season after all) and a glass of crisp white wine while we soak up those views. Everything faces lakeward, including our large and rather grand junior suite. The tall

windows (with balconies) let in the light and lake vistas, the carpets are plush underfoot, and the exquisite antique furniture adds a timeless grandeur. Our suite’s centrepiece is an oversized bed, and there’s a gleaming marble bathroom to marvel at. Everything you’d expect from Italian luxury, but we can’t linger too long as we’re here for the hottest ticket around – the exclusive lighting ceremony and cocktail party.

“At Villa D'Este there's even a chocolate room where we can indulge in the stu to the sound of live harp music”

Nothing is done in small measure at Villa d’Este. Their Christmas light extravaganza has been on everyone’s lips for months. It is not easy to get an invitation, and the planning has been extensive. We’re in glamorous company as we gather in anticipation below the curve of the spiral staircase, champagne in hand. With the flick of a switch, the lights burst to life, and Villa d’Este is turned into a magical, sparkling fairyland. What seem like a million twinkling lights bring the festive season to life and happiness to everyone’s hearts while a gospel choir takes things to a higher plane. Truly something special. Aside from the lighting ceremony, undoubtedly the star of our November Villa d’Este show, we also enjoy exceptional food. Along with tru es on demand, we enjoy the best of Italian wine (the list is like a connoisseur’s encyclopaedia). We indulge in a relaxing facial in one of the nearby villas that belong to the hotel and try out tasty Italian small plates in the jazz club

listening to a charming and talented local singer. There’s even an elegant chocolate room where we can indulge in the stu , along with pastries and afternoon tea, to the sound of live harp music. It is quite magical. We take to the lake one sunny afternoon for a boat tour with Vaporina. That legendary gleaming woodwork and cream leather seats make anyone feel like Hollywood royalty. There’s also a discreet opportunity to villa-spot some of the area’s most exclusive enclaves. Everything seems even more spectacular from the water as we whizz across its sparkling surface with the wind in our hair, taking in mountain views and gorgeous homes. Best view of all is when we pass the place we’ve very quickly come to call home. Sitting majestically on the shore, Villa d’Este doesn’t just live up to the hype, it exceeds it, and go during the festive season and you’ll be well on your way to your best Christmas yet.

Play TIME

Perryfields Infant School in Chelmsford has unveiled a new playground that brings a little sunshine to the winter months

Recently, Perryfields Infant School, in Springfield, Chelmsford, opened its new playground following a successful funding bid for £45,000. The playground, called ‘Sunshine Garden’, o ers all pupils at the Essex infant school an inclusive and recreational play space – and truly lives up to its name.

The inclusion bid from Essex Local Authority, won by Bethan Williams, Perryfields’ Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO), has funded a range of sensory playground apparatus, such as a sensory tunnel and rope play equipment. The equipment varies in shape, size and texture to suit a range of physical needs and was chosen for its abilities to support children’s cognitive and physical development, and self-regulation. All pupils

“It creates opportunities for all children to develop interaction skills with peers”

at the school including those with special education needs and disabilities (SEND) benefit from the new playground facilities.

Amanda Reid, Headteacher at Perryfields, says: “At Perryfields, we welcome all children, and ensure that those who may have additional needs are successfully supported. Our new playground helps make this possible. As you can imagine, Sunshine Garden is extremely popular and it has been an absolute joy to see the huge smiles on children’s faces during their breaks.”

Bethan Williams adds: “At Perryfields Infant School, we strive to ensure we can meet the needs of all our pupils. In addition to enhancing the provision for our Early Years Foundation Stage children who joined in September, we wanted to have a safe space for those with Social Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. For some pupils, the classroom environment can often be overwhelming, making it di cult to maintain attention, so regular breaks from the classroom are essential to support regulation.

“Thanks to the funding secured from Essex Local Authority through the inclusion framework bid, we can provide this new sensory space. The area not only promotes physical development, spatial awareness, and balance and

movement, but by being shared with all pupils, it creates opportunities for all of them to develop interaction skills with peers. These skills help to develop crucial life skills, such as problem solving, negotiating, sharing and taking turns, all within an engaging environment.”

The long-lasting benefits are numerous.

“The new equipment also encourages pupils to be creative and imaginative with their play; while gaining the movement and sensory regulation they need to thrive at school. Movement is essential in helping pupils regulate e ectively. Our new playground ensures they have a safe, fun and interactive space to do this. As part of a sensory circuit, pupils spend five to ten minutes a day using the Sunshine Garden’s equipment outside, followed by a calming activity, such as a breathing exercise, before returning to class. This process helps pupils feel ready to engage with their learning and means they can maintain focus and concentration for longer periods.

“All pupils have loved using the new equipment,” Bethan says, “and all sta are extremely pleased with the new addition. It will continue to benefit all the pupils of Perryfields for many years to come.”

WHEN CHILDREN BELONG, THEY BELIEVE

WHERE THE MAGIC

BEGINS

And believing turns to becoming. Exploring what makes Clayesmore so special

Wouldn’t every child love to go to Hogwarts?

Clayesmore is about as close as you can get, not just because of its iconic turret or incredible food, but because it’s a place where every child discovers their own special strengths. Whether you’re curious and creative, bold and adventurous, thoughtful and kind, or driven and determined, Clayesmore is where you discover who you are – and all you can become.

Tucked away in the rolling Dorset countryside, Clayesmore has spent over 130 years weaving this quiet kind of magic – the kind that doesn’t rely on spells, but on connection, care, and curiosity. Success here isn’t defined by a single path; it’s a journey that unfolds uniquely for each individual.

Clayesmore is a school where every child is known – not just by name, but by nature. Teachers recognise each child’s spark, strengths, and story, and

in that recognition, children experience something transformative: belonging. When a young person feels seen, understood, and valued, something extraordinary happens – they begin to believe, and from that belief comes possibility.

The journey begins in the Prep School, where specialist teaching in art, design, music, languages, and sport helps children explore their gifts and build a foundation not just for learning, but for life.

As students move into the Senior School, the world opens wider. The curriculum challenges and inspires, encouraging each child to shine – whether through science or sculpture, coding or climbing, drama or debate – while building resilience, leadership, and independence.

Boarding is the heart of Clayesmore, a close-knit community where trust, support, and respect guide every moment. It’s a home where friendships flourish, individual strengths are celebrated, and pupils learn the enchantment of caring for others.

By Sixth Form, students stand tall in their own stories. Small class sizes, expert guidance, and a wide choice of A-levels and BTECs give each individual the freedom and support to carve their own path. As one grandparent reflected: “Clayesmore has given our grandchildren an exceptional education, strong values, and the confidence to take on the next stage of their lives.”

When children belong, they believe; and when they believe, they become – scholars, artists, visionaries, leaders – whatever their story is meant to be. If you’re searching for a school that o ers more than results, Clayesmore is ready to welcome you.

A NEW JOURNEY

It may be one of the UK’s oldest Catholic schools, but New Hall School continues to embrace advancements that lead to a bright future

New Hall School in Chelmsford was recently delighted to celebrate the opening of Beaulieu Park Station, a new transport hub that puts London just 35 minutes away from the school and strengthens connections across East Anglia and beyond.

Located at the foot of New Hall’s tree-lined avenue, the station is just a short walk from New Hall, making it easier than ever for students, sta , and visitors to travel to and from London. The new station o ers direct Londonlinked services, providing seamless connections to London Liverpool Street and all major airports, as well as access to East Anglia’s key destinations.

Katherine Je rey, Principal of New Hall School, says: “As one of the oldest Catholic schools in the UK, New Hall has witnessed centuries of change. The opening of Beaulieu Park Station is an historic milestone that connects our proud heritage with a future full of opportunity and advancement.”

The opening was celebrated by sta and dance students, who gathered to watch the first train depart at 7.20am with excitement. Passersby were treated to a special performance, as students danced to ‘Chattanooga Choo Choo’ created by New Hall’s own Jazz Initiative, adding a vibrant touch to this historic day.

The new station echoes the area’s historic railway heritage, a legacy closely tied with Boreham House, which New Hall acquired in November 2024. When the

Great Eastern Railway cut through the Boreham House estate in 1844, the owner, Sir John Tyrell, secured a private railway station on his estate. This station allowed him to stop any train passing through, and consisted of a small hut directly opposite Boreham House. Although the station was demolished following Tyrell’s death, the new Beaulieu Park Station revives this tradition, once again connecting this historic estate to London and beyond.

Beaulieu Park Station, the ‘Home of New Hall School’, represents a significant step forward in linking this historic school to the capital, making travel faster, simpler, and more convenient than ever.

New Hall School is a leading independent boarding and day school for 1,500 students aged 1-19; it is the UK’s largest Catholic school, and one of the oldest, founded in 1642. New Hall occupies the magnificent former Tudor palace of Beaulieu.

Approached from a mile-long tree-lined avenue, the main building is Grade I listed, and the grounds and avenue of trees are also a listed historic park and garden. New Hall is ranked by English Heritage in the top 2% of heritage buildings in the country. The estate was formally owned by Sir Thomas Boleyn, father of Anne Boleyn; King Henry VIII acquired it in 1517 and built the first of his great palaces, Beaulieu, on which Hampton Court was modelled.

Poetry by Heart, the national poetry speaking competition for young people, opened on National Poetry Day in early October with a call to all schools to sign up.

It has also released a preview of Poetry By Heart: The Movie, a feature fi lm documentary following schools as they enter the competition.

The fi lm details the impact that Poetry By Heart has on young people – from poetry being used to create unity in challenging environments to encouraging children to explore and manage their emotions. It was fi lmed in schools across the country, from Newcastle to the Scilly Isles and Great Yarmouth to Barrow, and features

PO ETRY IN MOTION

The annual competition Poetry is open, and there’s a forthcoming documentary about this transformative experience

freestyle entries, poetry clubs and sessions where teachers and pupils work on poems, run competitions and fi ne-tune video submissions. The full documentary will be released next year. “Poetry belongs everywhere,” says Dr Julie Blake, co-founder and co-director of Poetry By Heart. “But it has a special place in schools. As revealed in our movie, teachers and the young people who take part in Poetry By Heart understand the joy, satisfaction and deep learning that comes from knowing a poem by heart.

“We can’t wait to release our fi lm on a big screen in 2026 and in the meantime, we urge all schools to sign up now,” she adds. “It doesn’t have to be a big undertaking but however you choose to take part, the impact will be huge.”

Poetry By Heart is open to all schools and colleges in England and invites young people to choose a poem they love, learn it by heart, and perform it out loud. Schools hold internal competitions to select their own winners, with the best from each region then invited to a Grand Finale at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre next summer to compete for the title of national champion. This year, over 1,600 schools across England took part, with 128,000 performances and 4,300 fi nalists.

POETRY BY HEART 2025 FINALIST MARIA

urden & Hunt welcome to the market this exceptional Grade II listed, gated residence o ering over 7,000 sqft. Set amongst expansive grounds, with stables, outbuilding, tennis courts and a heated swimming pool, the impressive property is a luxuriously versatile home and benefits from a two bedroom annexe, creating an opportunity for multi generational living.

A stable home

Despite external factors, the property market in Essex remains resilient, writes the cofounder of Durden & Hunt, James Hunt

As the dust settles on the Chancellor’s latest Budget, the property market once again finds itself under the microscope. Yet, while policy tweaks and headline grabbing announcements tend to dominate short term sentiment, the fundamentals tell a more measured story, one of resilience and stability.

Across 2024 and into the close of this year, consumer spending has remained broadly steady despite economic headwinds. Buyers are more selective, yes, but they are still transacting, particularly where quality, location and value align. This consistent undercurrent of demand is what continues to support property prices and activity levels, even as the market adjusts to new realities.

long term tend to come out strongest. Whether we’re talking interest rates, tax adjustments or regulatory change, the lesson is the same: trends evolve, markets rebalance and opportunity returns for those who stay active and strategic.

History tells us that housing has always moved in cycles and those who think

At Durden & Hunt, we continue to see well positioned homes performing strongly and new listings drawing attention quickly when priced with accuracy. Sellers who recognise this and avoid chasing yesterday’s valuations are the ones progressing smoothly into their next chapter. As we head into 2026, confidence will again be the key di erentiator. Budgets come and go, but property remains both an essential asset and a long term store of value. The smartest move is to look past the noise and plan with perspective.

Sell with confidence

What could the post-budget housing market look like in West Essex? Felicity Walker, head of o ce at Savills Loughton, discusses the property landscape

As 2025 draws to a close, many of us will be reflecting on the past year and considering our plans for 2026. If buying or selling a property is part of that picture, then it’s important to have a good understanding of what’s happening in the housing market.

Of course, we won’t know the full picture until Chancellor Rachel Reeves delivers her Autumn Budget (which at the time of writing is still two weeks away – making any future predictions nigh on impossible). What’s clear is that both buyers and sellers have been more hesitant in the last month or so as they wait to see what might happen post 26th November.

have been subject to renegotiation, but demand remains solid for well-maintained family homes priced anywhere from £750,000 up to £3m. Commitment from needs based buyers who want to upsize or relocate has also been strong.

Whatever the outcome, there’s a definite sense that having some clarity will be an improvement on the period of uncertainty we’ve recently found ourselves in.

Despite the understandable caution, the property market in West Essex has remained largely resilient. It’s true there’s been a softening of prices and a few deals

Encouragingly, our Loughton o ce sold significantly more properties in the 10 months to the end of October this year than it did during the same period for 2024, which shows that transactions are being done. Ultimately, it will take time for any tax changes presented in the budget to have any discernible e ect, so it’s likely we will see a continuation of current trends – with the market remaining price sensitive in the short to medium term. And of course, the decision to buy or sell your property, while influenced by external factors, is a deeply personal one. If you’re considering a move, it will be important to partner with an agent with a strong track record. With a little bit of luck the new year will bring more clarity – but whatever the future holds, we’ll be here to help you navigate the market with confidence.

FELICITY WALKER
why everyone is talking about…

The Dream FACTORY

How the wonderful Essexbased charity has been making dreams come true in 2025

The Dream Factory started January with an appeal for funds to keep the charity alive past 2025, as demand for dreams continues to grow. Despite the challenges, this remarkable Essex-based charity has continued to bring smiles, hope and unforgettable memories by granting precious dreams for children and young people between the ages of three to 25 years, with life-threatening conditions, severe disabilities, and those requiring end-of-life dreams.

The year began with a spectacular Boxing Dinner in January, where five former England and World Champion boxers, including two of The Dream Factory’s Patrons Colin McMillan BEM and Michael Watson MBE, joined supporters for an unforgettable evening of inspiration and generosity.

In June, The Dream Factory held its first ever Three Stadium Walk, starting at West Ham’s London Stadium, continuing to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium at White Hart Lane, and finishing at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium – an incredible challenge filled with spirit, teamwork and community pride. One of The Dream Factory’s Patrons, Olympic, World and Commonwealth Champion Christine Ohuruogu MBE, led the warmup to the event.

September brought the colour and excitement of a Bollywood Dinner, kindly sponsored by RGB Electrical

Stores, followed by a fun and fabulous Quiz Night in Chingford, both filled with laughter and fundraising success.

The charity is proud to be the o cial partner for Media 10 in Loughton, and this Christmas will also be the charity partner for the Ideal Home Show Christmas at Olympia from 26th–30th November. The Dream Factory will also be at the Chingford Christmas Market on Saturday 20th December 2025. In addition, UKLA have chosen The Dream Factory as their Charity of the Year, and Haslers Accountants in Loughton continue to support the charity through sponsorships and fundraising initiatives.

This year alone, 32 dreams have been granted, bringing the total to an incredible 764 dreams since The Dream Factory began. Some of the

2025 dreams were a toy shopping spree for Olivia, and trips to Disneyland, Paris for Connie and little Freddie.
