ABSOLUTELY’S November issue highlights

I1
remember Christmas gifts as indicators of where I was in my life at the time. The rst one I truly remember was the Millennium Falcon toy from Star Wars I don©t think I have ever been so in awe since. Then around 11 I recall being gifted my rst football shirt, swiftly followed a year later by some boots when I decided to try and emulate my sporting heroes. Into the teens and it was all computer games (I spent FAR too long holed up in my room on the ever-evolving consoles, from my beloved ZX Spectrum to an Amiga), and as I hit university it was money, which was swiftly spent down the pub.
As I have got older, yes, I have become that hard to buy for person. It©s not deliberate, or due to any kind of fatigue around Christmas (I love this time of the year), but I genuinely don©t ever know what I want when asked. One year I did actually receive pants and socks, although a few hours later my ©real© present came out and it was all a big laugh.

So when our gift guide special comes around, it©s very much not just work for me. I am really intrigued to know what kind of goodies are hitting the market this year. I have certainly got my eye on the Fujifi lm instant camera and maybe, nally, I can embrace that love for photography in 2026.
If you are someone who prefers to see things in the esh, don©t miss our Sussex Christmas market round up it©s a true gift.

Brighton photographer Xavier Buendia reflects on a decade behind the camera, his previous life in hospitality and why he wants to now help a new business

Q You originally trained as a sommelier before switching to photography what prompted that creative reset at 30?
A Burnout! Until then, and from the age of 15, Iíve been working in hospitality at all levels and half across the world. From a grubby pizza place in a bus station in Lewes, and a 7 Eleven in my neighbourhood in Mexico City, to a 3 Michelin Star restaurant in Spain and a private country club in upstate New York, I spent most of my 20s in the service industry. Suddenly, I felt Iíd done enough. I came to a point where I felt I had no time for myself, therefore no life outside work, no money, and no purpose. I said to my wife I had to stop and reconsider life. I found photography to be quite liberating and therapeutic. Since I was 10, a camera has always been with me. So the reset at 30 was prompted by inner peace. Most of the time, I was either daydreaming about how to tell the story of a winemaker or doing more creative stu! instead of focusing on the day≠to≠day tasks, so it was an easy choice to make to change careers.
Q Was there a turning point when you knew photography could become a sustainable business for you?
A There are two key moments in my career.

First, winning an award in my first year of trading. Then, signing a contract with a big client, which gave me some financial breathing space so I could strategise the business where I wanted it to be.
Q How has your Mexican heritage influenced your creative style or the way you see the world through a lens?
A This is such a great question! I bring my culture and heritage with me everywhere I photograph. Iím always looking at the work of photography masters and artists and ask how they would resolve x, y or z situations, and then I make it my own. From the rich and vibrant colour palette of Mexican modernist and contemporary art, which is clearly visible on my website, to more psychological influences in storytelling, like magical realism.
Q Youíve worked with top chefs like Monica Galetti and Tom Aikens what did you take away from those collaborations?
A Their kindness and their people skills first. These are busy chefs with little to no time for barely anything; however, every time I was there to photograph, they would give their full attention, making sure I had everything needed to perform at their level. Then, their level of focus and determination. I found it incredibly inspiring to see them work, either in the middle of service or plating new dishes.
Q With nearly a million photographs taken, do you have a favourite series?
A Yes. After lockdown, I started working
on a series titled ëMy Morning Walksí, where I go out at sunrise to do these long, meditative walks that I love doing while photographing the cities and towns that I visit. I miss empty, quiet streets so much that the only way I can experience that kind of peace again is very early in the morning.
Q Youíre known for stripping away stereotypes in portraiture how do you approach building trust with your subjects?
A I try to bring peopleís stories, their journey, their backgrounds, their history, their curiosities and their goals all into a single frame through real emotions. I spend a lot of time talking to the people I photograph, getting to know them, how they move, how they stand, or even walk; what makes them who they are. I put all of this into the way they wish to be portrayed. Portraiture is fascinating and a great way to get me out of my shell as an introvert, so itís also a personal challenge. It feels so good to know youíre helping someone achieve something through one good picture you take of them.
Q What role does authenticity play in your creative process?
A It is everything! Iím not the most creative, disruptive or original photographer out there, and Iím ok with that. However, I do believe Iím one of the most authentic ones when it comes to my personal brand. People will always know where they stand with me, what I stand for, and what my work represents.

Q Why was it important for you to celebrate your 10th year by supporting a new Sussex entrepreneur?
A When I started, I had no plan other than turning an artistic passion into a sustainable, independent business. Ten years later, Iím proud Iíve reached that goal and pushed boundaries on how I deliver my work. Iíve photographed such talented people, and itís been a joy to see their businesses grow, but I know how hard it is in todayís economic climate to run a small business on your own terms. Thatís why my 10th birthday has been an ideal excuse for me to thank the Sussex community for their support and o er one new, small, independent business or entrepreneur a two≠hour photoshoot to help them elevate their portfolio and brand identity.

Q How do your mentoring and workshops help aspiring photographers find their voice?
A When I first turned professional in 2015, I would have loved to have listened to someone telling me the realities of working for yourself. So for several years, I have been sharing the knowledge and experience Iíve gained with those starting out in creative industries through mentorship, workshops, and collaborative opportunities.
Q What do you love most about the Brighton creative community?
A How diverse and multicultural it is. You can draw inspiration from anyone, everywhere and they all have their own unique voice and story.
Q Where do you see your photography and creative direction evolving?
A I want to continue to challenge creativity and mostly work with independent businesses because I enjoy creating powerful visuals that help small businesses grow. At the heart of my business is a belief in craft, community, and meaningful storytelling that focuses on human potential, so that combined with making home≠printed zines and limited edition prints is where I see myself for the next couple of years.

Brighton local Kev Nixon has spent five decades in the music business and has now written a book about it. Absolutely asks him for a snapshot of his memories and why he came to East Sussex
Iíve been in the music business 50 years this year and everything that was truly great about it happened in the last century. By saying that Iím talking about Louis Armstrong, Django Reinhardt, Irving Berlin, Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Hoagy Carmichael & Johnny Mercer, Benny Goodman, Chet Baker, Peggy Lee, Glenn Miller, Cole Porter, Roger & Hammerstein, Hank Williams, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Elvis, Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Stevie Wonder, David Bowie, Michael Jackson, U2, Madonna, Prince, Alanis Morrissette and maybe Eric Clapton. But stand≠out moments do continueÖ One day at BIMM [Music Institute Brighton] West I invited my old friend Nick Gatfield (ex Dexyís trumpet player who became MD of Island Records and Chairman of Sony UK) to come and do a Masterclass. He told me he only had an hour but stayed for seven when he saw what we were doing. He wanted to sign Tom Odell, but I was taking Tom to Elton Johnís Rocket Management, so we didnít pursue it.

ìAmy Winehouse and I would have been perfect for each otherî
But then as we were sitting in the Hove Deli discussing Tom, Nick shocked me when he said in a surprisingly earnest tone ëyou should be managing him Kev, and the Kooks, what are you thinking?í. Flatteringly, Tom had already asked me to manage him and, stupidly, Iíd made some lame excuse about being President and Chairman of BIMM left too little time. But as we left and walked back to BIMM, Nick said to me ëif you change your mind about managing again, Iíve got an artist who would be right up your streetí. Unbeknown to many but known to Nick, Iím a jazz guitarist and because of my mum's influence, Iím also a life≠long jazz and swing fanatic. Nick gave me a CD that I listened to in the car, and before the first track had even ended, I rang him on his mobile and told him this was the best British female voice Iíd heard since Dusty Springfield, who was it? Amy Winehouse. But it was too late, and sheíd signed with Simon Fuller and promptly fired him a year later when her first album didnít sell. Amy and I would have been perfect for each other. One other moment that springs to mind was walking out on stage with

Kula Shaker at Knebworth (I played percussion behind the drummer for the whole two years I managed and produced them) when we opened for Oasis in 1996. I remember that the horizon was still people, no grass or trees, just more people such was the vastness of the crowd. The gig was great but by then weíd only had two hits Grateful When Youíre Dead and Tattva so it took a minute to get the acres of crowd really going and up on their feet.
A few months later after our debut album K had reached number one, won a Brit, and gone over the first million sales mark, we were on tour in America with Beck and playing stadiums, and when we got to RFK Stadium in Washington DC, the whole 90,000 crowd sang along with every single song we played. For me that was the ultimate definition of ëmaking ití.
Founding BIMM in 2001 was what brought us to Brighton and my next book in March 2026, We Donít Need No Education , is the story of BIMM and DIME, the latter being the similar music education business that my wife and
business partner Sarah Clayman and I founded in Detroit and Denver in 2013, after reluctantly selling BIMM in 2011. We chose Brighton as the location for BIMM for a specific reason, and that was because in 2000 we tragically lost Kirsty MacColl, whom I had managed since 1997 after my acrimonious split with Kula Shaker. I had also gone into partnership with Richard Branson and was attempting to help him rescue his ailing label V2, on which Kirsty was their second biggest act after The Stereophonics. But it wasnít to be, and when Kirsty died so unexpectedly in December 2000, we were in deep shock. In fact, we were not even sure we wanted to stay in the music business at all. We were based in Notting Hill, which is full of music biz people and we wanted to get away, make a fresh start, so Brighton ticked many boxes, especially being only 45 minutes from Victoria Station. We didnít think about it too much and just bought a house in Kemp Town, and we struck a partnership deal with the University of Sussex. Then we leased a building in the next street from us that was conveniently named Rock Place and that became BIMM East.

ìThe challenge of reigniting Brighton©s dormant music scene was an exciting oneî
From a music biz point of view, and with Norman Cook being a clear exception, Brighton had been asleep for too long, and I had fond memories of touring there over the years, especially playing at the Top Rank which was such a great venue. After a couple of visits, the challenge of reigniting Brightonís dormant music scene was an exciting one and thatís what we needed. It worked out spectacularly well, mainly because we got such an open≠door welcome on behalf of the hundreds of BIMM students that suddenly started gigging in every possible little venue across Brighton and Hove. I ended up on Brighton Councilís Arts Commission and made so many great friends like Donna Close, and Theatre Royal boss Julien Boast. Those two, plus a few more, are still friends today.
We also started a record label called South Coast Sounds and I returned to producing two or three albums per year, and I recorded most of them at The Levellersí home, Metway Studios, with my friend and brilliant engineer, Toby May. Being part of the subculture of Brighton and getting its music noticed in the international music biz was important and became creatively rewarding for us. That remains a key reason why we came back after eight years of living and working in Detroit, Denver and Los Angeles. Covid 19 may have been the physical reason for our return, but we had laid roots here, and despite my northern accent, for Sarah and I, Sussex is home.

If youíre dreaming of unwrapping the keys to your new home in time for Christmas, you need to start planning now. The festive season compresses the property timeline, as solicitors, lenders, and removal companies all slow down. Successfully moving by December requires early preparation, a proactive team, and crystal≠clear communication. Here is your short guide to securing your dream home before the holidays.
)
Set Expectations Early: Immediately let the sellerís estate agent and your solicitor know your desired Christmas move≠in date. Ask the agent to check the entire chain all parties must agree on the date for it to work. Know the Cut≠Ofs: Ascertain the holiday closing dates for solicitors, estate agents, and mortgage lenders. These deadlines are non≠negotiable and essential for planning your nal week.
Secure your Mortgage: Donít wait until youíve found a property. Secure a pre≠approved mortgage as early as possible. This makes you a more attractive buyer and allows you to move faster once you nd your ideal home. Ready the Funds: Ensure all necessary funds the deposit, any nancial gifts, and the nal balance are readily

available. Transferring money at your solicitorís request must be done promptly, as bank holiday limits and security checks can cause delays.
Leasehold Properties: If you are purchasing a leasehold, the management company is often a signifi cant source of delay. Ask whether required consents and management packs are already in place or have been requested.
New Build Homes: If buying a new build, get written confi rmation from the developer that the property will be completed and signed of well in advance of your proposed completion date.
Choose Wisely: Select experienced agents, solicitors, and brokers who are known for being proactive and familiar with holiday deadlines. A slow professional in your chain will stall the entire process.
Act Quickly on Paperwork: To keep momentum, sign and return documents including original identifi cation immediately. The faster you return documents, the sooner your solicitor can move to the next stage.
Fund Searches without Delay: Respond instantly to any requests for monies on account from your solicitor. This is crucial for applying for essential property searches without delay.
Schedule Key Dates Early: Book your surveys, valuations, and removal vans as soon as you have an accepted ofer. These services become heavily booked and expensive as Christmas approaches. Contingency Plans: Keep an eye on the weather forecast and have contingency plans for travel and transport in case of winter delays. Finally, confi rm all scheduled appointments twice, or even three times, to prevent a last≠minute cancellation.
Moving before Christmas can be especially demanding, requiring focus and organisation. However, with thoughtful preparation and a disciplined approach, you signifi cantly increase your chances of celebrating the holiday in your new home.

David Toscano recounts the story of celebrated Hove restaurant, Cin Cin, from a change of career to surviving the pandemic

Q What first inspired you to start Cin Cin, and why Brighton?
A I qualified as a lawyer in Sydney, but was bored with that job pretty quickly. I needed a second career in something that energised me and gave me an outlet for creativity. So I left Sydney to try to find that and, despite doing another 10 years as a lawyer in London, I eventually made the jump from law to food in 2015. At the time I was living in Brighton with my wife who grew up in Sussex and there was no modern Italian restaurant in town so I decided to create one.
Q You began with a vintage Fiat 850 van serving Italian street food what made you take the leap from a van to a permanent restaurant?
A I always wanted a restaurant, the van was just a ëvehicleí to test out what Cin Cin could be and to see if customers might like it. I wanted to create the kind of restaurant I would be happiest eating in open kitchen where I can see the chefs working and talk to them, counter dining on stools, a short menu that changes with the seasons. So we have all these things at Cin Cin.
Q How has your Italian heritage shaped the concept and menu at Cin Cin?
A Food was always central to my family
conversations when I was growing up. If you arrived at a relativeís house they never asked how you were, always it was ëAre you hungry? Have you eaten?í and no matter your answer, you always got fed! At Cin Cin we try to capture that kind of caring conviviality for our customers so they feel as though they have been a guest in our house.
Q Whatís your process for creating new dishes and menus at Cin Cin?
A I have been working with my Chef Patron Jamie Halsall for over 10 years now so we know what a Cin Cin dish looks, feels and tastes like. Our starting point is what is in season in each month and we use that local produce as the basis for designing Italian dishes that showcase that produce when it is at the height of its flavour.
Q Do you have a signature dish that best represents Cin Cinís philosophy?
A Perhaps the dish we are best known for is our Rabbit Crochette with parsley and garlic emulsion. This dish was on the opening menu in November 2016 and came about as a mistake. I had wanted a rabbit lasagne on the opening menu, but when Jamie tested it, the oven we had at that time would not heat it up in time for

“WE WANT YOU TO FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE BEEN A GUEST IN OUR HOUSE”

service so he took the rabbit white ragu with bechamel and turned it into a crochette itís been the most popular dish we have had and it returns every year when rabbits are in season.
Q Where do you source your ingredients?
A We source as much Sussex produce as we can meat and game from Calcot Farm in Ashurst, vegetables and fruit from Chefís Farms in Arundel, fish from MCB in Newhaven. Itís incredibly important to us that we find the best Sussex ingredients we can and use them in season so their flavour is as bright as possible on the plate.
Q How did the pandemic shape or change Cin Cinís approach?
A Well there was 48 hours where I thought the business was gone and I had lost all my hard work to that point! Then Jamie and I got on a call and resolved that we would do whatever we had to do to save the business.
So we quickly put together Cin Cin At Home a range of restaurant dishes you can order for delivery in Brighton to finish at home and that not only saved the business, but drove us forward to grow it again. I think the pandemic gave us the resilience to know we could get through anything and that has given us strength since then.
Q As we approach the festive season, what can we expect from Cin Cin?
A The festive season is always a lot of fun at Cin Cin! We host a lot of celebrations and have our festive menus ready to go including a Sharing Feast menu we have created especially for groups so thereís an easy and enjoyable way to catch up with family, friends and colleagues because thatís what Christmas is all about.

A star is born SPOTLIGHT
West Sussex has a new player on the wine map. Abingworth Vineyard has just dropped its debut vintage: a bright, zesty Sauvignon Blanc and a pale, juicy Pinot Noir RosÈ both full of promise, personality, and year-round appeal.
The idea was born during lockdown, when Chris and Caroline Stedman decided to swap city life for a vineyard dream. In 2022, they planted over nine hectares of vines on the gently sloping fields of Champions Farm. What began as a mid-pandemic experiment has since grown into a full-blown family afair, with their four daughters pitching in on everything from design to marketing to weeding. Everyoneís involved, everyoneís muddy, everyoneís got an opinion on pruning.
And just like the family behind them, the wines are brimming with character. Theyíre made to celebrate joy, creativity, and lifeís small pleasures whether thatís raising a glass with friends or stealing five precious minutes of peace and quiet. Use code ABSOLUTELY10 for 10% of your order.

o pain, no gain, they say. Well theyíre wrong about microblading, unless you count the two weekends a year where you might look like youíve overdone it slightly on the brows. Because thereís certainly no physical pain and the gains are significant. Before I took the plunge, my brows were terrible. Sparse, wonky, messy, asymmetrical. Still, I was afraid of permanently transforming them into dark, angular, fierce-looking arches but Karen Betts is not about that at all. Her approach to treatment is to replicate a natural look, and sheíll tell you that directly. In fact, sheíll refuse to give you what she deems the wrong brows. So what is microblading? Essentially, itís a tattoo. But microblading uses a blade-shaped tool with a row of tiny, barely visible needles to create hair-like strokes along your brows while depositing pigment into your skin. Traditional tattoos use ink, while microblading is done with safer pigment. These fade over time without changing colour. After an initial session my brows look quite intense (the awkward weekend) but tone down quickly, and a follow up appointment two months later ensures that results will last for about a year. ìIíll just book you in for this time next year then shall I?î asks Karenís assistant. The answerís a firm yes. Iím never going back to terrible brows.

How HAPA Architects and Inglis Hall combined their respective expertise to create this stunning project in East Sussex
Alife≠changing house build project with all the essential ingredients: clients with a strong vision, award≠winning architects and award≠ winning kitchen designers came together to create something truly special. The Brick Barn is a contemporary home blending agricultural charm with innovative design, featuring sustainable materials, open≠plan spaces, and natural materials. It harmonises industrial elegance with rural warmth, creating a timeless, functional, and connected family home. Here, HAPA Architects and Inglis Hall explain the journey into creating a spectacular home in East Sussex, from the initial brief, to how the heart of the home was brought to life.
HAPA : We relish opportunities to detail homes that are both respectful of their
context and carefully tailored to modern family life. The Brick Barn is a great example of a project where we joined the team at the detailed design stage, working closely with the client and contractor to transform an initial concept into a distinctive and highly liveable home.
Replacing a modest bungalow, the new 600m ² house sits comfortably within its rural setting. A large portion of the building is tucked discreetly into the landscape, with a subterranean level housing garages, workshops, and ancillary spaces. Above ground, the form draws inspiration from traditional agricultural barns, finished in warm brick and clay tiles, with crisp, refined detailing.
The home is arranged into two clear elements: a single≠storey wing for the kitchen, living and dining areas, and a two≠storey bedroom block. A generous entrance hall leads into open≠plan family spaces, with wide terraces and large openings framing views over the surrounding countryside. A secondary

entrance creates a connection to a gallery space, further enhancing the sense of openness and flow.
Carefully placed Crittall≠style windows and large apertures give the building a subtle industrial character, complementing its agricultural references. Throughout, the material palette and detailing were developed in close dialogue with the client, whose involvement and attention to detail helped drive the high standard of execution.
At the heart of the home, the kitchen brings together rural warmth with industrial clarity. Designed and crafted in collaboration with Inglis Hall, the space balances bold, tactile materials, rich band≠sawn oak, brushed black granite, raw brass, and sleek Richlite panels to create a kitchen that is both highly functional and beautifully grounded. Large expanses of glazing, together with carefully chosen textures and finishes, ensure the kitchen feels deeply connected to the landscape, becoming a place of
gathering, creativity and everyday living.
INGLISHALL : Our kitchens speak of individuality, spaces that create atmosphere, where routines evolve into rituals, and where a clientís vision can be shaped into reality. For the creative owners of Brick Barn, artists at heart, happiest out in the fields with their beloved horses, the kitchen was always going to be more than a room. It would be a canvas, alive with texture, wild with light, and open to the landscape they adore.
Their vision: bring the outside in. Sunrise tumbling across floor≠to≠ceiling glass, muddy boots by the door after a ride, sunlight glancing off worktops. Each finish, every material, chosen with careful hands and an eye for detail, echoes of creativity, love of nature, and a life lived close to the land.
All roads lead to the kitchen. The heart of the home, a place where dogs nap by the hearth and sunlight writes patterns on the floor.
ìThe kitchen was always going to be more than a room: it would be a canvas, alive with textureî

It flexes for a busy family, shifting from morning coffees to evening meals, always offering comfort and connection. Here, everyday moments gather and settle, weaving the heart of family life in light and warmth.
A material palette dark juxtaposed with light. Design here is a quiet dialogue, a play of textures and contrast. Blackened band≠sawn oak climbs to the ceiling, deliberately bold against raw oak. The well≠loved table centers the space, inviting shared meals and conversation.
Industrial edges meet rural warmth: brass catches sunlight, Richlite runs smooth alongside tactile oak, and the granite worktops connect the inside to the land beyond. Every element is chosen to be felt as much as seen, each part blending function and personality.

The world of sport in schools today is constantly evolving for several interconnected reasons, from increased awareness around student mental health and wellness, to advances in technology and the growing emphasis on inclusivity and diversity. As such, a progressive approach to sports education is vital if schools are to enhance pupil experiences and prepare them for the
dynamic modern world. When it comes to the kind of sports played in school, there is a notable trend emerging around pupil and parent choice, but this must always be balanced with best use of facilities and sta ng expertise. The rise of overseas pupils in boarding schools across the UK today has also played a pivotal role in this trend because pupils often arrive from other countries with very di erent sporting backgrounds and interests. Individual sports such as golf and tennis are becoming increasingly popular
amongst students today. Even though sports like golf have been historically more popular with adults and are perhaps not quite as widespread as football or rugby in schools, those schools that have decided to invest in golf are seeing excellent learning and development benefits, as a result. With our younger society often driven by the prevalence of screens and devices, golf is an excellent outdoor activity that not only sharpens the mind, with a long list of health benefits, it helps to get

children active and out into nature. Likewise, the rising popularity of cricket and football for girls has now put both sports at the forefront of physical education and team sports in schools. Amazing teams and individual role models, with profiles built through social media and raised further on television, has helped these sports to gain momentum, making them indistinguishable from other more established games in terms of the aspirations of girls. Giving these sports an equal platform on school noticeboards, during assemblies, on use of facilities, coaching expertise and match opportunities are all things that will continue to cement the place of these activities moving forward.
There is of course little doubt that global mainstream events such as world cups and the Olympics have turned the heads of children and have created ambition
ìSchools that have invested in golf are seeing excellent learning and development benefitsî
around what can be achieved. This can be incredibly positive with role models showing a clear pathway to success a key factor in getting young people interested in competitive sport. On the flip side this can result in a negative impact on those lesser niche sports that are not backed by powerful national governing bodies with extra funding and widespread television coverage. Rounders is a good example of this a traditional sport beloved by many children over the years despite now having little to no space within the PE curriculum. With this in mind, it is worth remembering that a pathway to elite greatness is not the only driver behind youth sport and for most of us perhaps not even a significant one. Engaging in sport simply to have fun with friends while getting fit, should remain front and centre for prep school aged children. Prep school inclusivity and opportunity also continues to be a focal point for all heads of sport in what has
been a welcome move away from trying to ensure you have a world beating first team/U13A to the detriment of all others. The landscape in general across prep school sport is much healthier than it has ever been, ironically at a time when schools themselves are under unparalleled pressure.
Windlesham House has always seen itself as having an important role in the local community when it comes to sharing sports facilities, expertise and hosting events. This has never had anything to do with attracting pupils or ticking the charity box, but is built more upon an understanding that communities work better when in partnership. Private sector schools have some of the finest sports facilities in the world, so it is only right that they benefit the wider community. The school has committed to the use of its facilities and Astro field for the purposes of training and playing NFL Flag Football

and hosts regular tournaments as well as travelling alongside other schools in the region to play in the NFL o cial league.
Becoming a regional hub for the NFL is part of Windleshamís drive to o er a more diverse range of sports to its pupils and to support the wider local pupil community. Pupils are also being taught NFL Flag Football as part of a curriculum programme and from a coaching perspective. Any sports like this that champion core team values, the ability to be played as a mixed sport on a fair footing, with speed, agility and creativity to the fore, will always be popular and have a place at the school.
The ability for children to have intellectual input into 'play≠calling' adds another dimension to their involvement in Flag Football as does the stop/start play by play nature of the game, which while a sticking point for many traditionally British sports fans, is another aspect which can really help children who find sustained concentration and movement more problematic. Linking with the NFL as a regional hub for the South East, Windlesham has been a training base
for local teachers across all ages and sectors. To date, we are nearing 100 sta trained up on the day courses run here by the NFL. We have also hosted the area tournament for the last three years, the growth of the sport locally outlined by an increase in attendees from eight teams three years ago to 22 in 2025.
The landscape of sport is ever≠evolving, never more so than in the 'post≠Covid' years. As such, the next five years will see a mixture of expansion, consolidation and re≠boot. Areas for expansion at Windlesham House include basketball, which was re≠introduced as a team sports programme last year, and girls' rugby with the recent world cup creating new interest. Dance has also become really vibrant over the last three years at the school following the launch of a new programme, now under new sta management, while girls' hockey, which has traditionally been an area of strength for the school, has been undergoing some re≠shaping to better serve the ever≠changing pupil population.

Our alumni, whom we call Old Cumnorians (or OCs), follow a wide variety of paths on leaving Cumnor aged 13, but the lasting connections formed during their early years, especially between pupils and sta , speak volumes. We are very proud of all our OCs and enjoy keeping in touch as their journeys post≠Cumnor progress.
One prime example is Billy Byers (Class of 2020), who began his dance and musical theatre journey at the age of just five. In November 2024, while a pupil at Hurst where he moved after Cumnor, he landed the role of the Artful Dodger in a new West End production of Oliver! produced by Cameron Macintosh and choreographed by Matthew Bourne. Despite nearly not auditioning due to the role clashing with his A≠levels, this was the opportunity of a lifetime.
Billyís love of the stage was sparked at a young age, but it was his role playing Peter Pan in Year 7 at Cumnor that really propelled him forward, and he has carried Cumnorís values into later life.
ìAim High, Be Kind and Dare to be Di erent is so appropriate,î Billy says on Cumnorís core values. ìI have always tried my best, it is so important to be nice to everyone on set or in a theatre company and daring to be di erent has encouraged me to pursue a route that is risky and unconventional.î

BILLYINOLIVER!

Cumnor has watched with pride as Billyís career has gone from strength to strength, recently welcoming him back to the school to meet with pupils and share his words of wisdom. ìYou have got to really want it,î Billy says. ìIt has to be your dream, nobody elseís, otherwise you will not be able to handle the inevitable failure on the pathway to success.î
He has also chosen to give back to the school through Cumnorís Performing Arts outreach programme; earlier this month alongside Cumnorís Director of Drama, Mrs Harris Billy travelled to Ansford Academy in Castle Cary as the students embarked on rehearsals
for their own rendition of Oliver!
ìTo be able to take ëCumnor on the Roadí and deliver a workshop with Billy was really very special,î says Mrs Harris. ìNot only was this hugely inspiring, it was a launch≠pad to raise the profile of drama at Ansford and bring their upcoming performance to life. The buzz around the school was incredible and they were blown away by the energy someone like Billy can generate. It was a truly special day that will be etched in our memories and weíre looking forward to developing these opportunities further.î
