ABSOLUTELY’S May issue highlights

Thirteen. Unlucky for some, but that's the number of years I have been married to my wonderful wife (comedians of yesteryear would probably say something disparaging, but I won't sink to those levels). Despite being 13 years ago, it's amazing the number of times our wedding comes up when meeting friends and family.

Weddings Special Exploring the

There was the photo booth, one of the first things that we decided to spend money on and I am so happy we did. Not too long ago I was at a friend's house for dinner and I noticed on the wall a picture from the booth of him and his wife pulling the most ridiculous faces. That made me smile a lot. There was my gag of buying my father a huge top hat, which linked to the importance in the family (although as my cousin pointed out at the time, I should have got a very small one). That top hat is on show at my parents' home. People always bring up the fact that my wife was an hour late, as she was waiting for her hairdresser to battle through traffic. Not one of the highlights for me.

is late, as she was waiting for her hairdresser to battle everything

But it just goes to show how important your big day is, so you need to make sure everything is in place for matters to go smoothly. Here's hoping our weddings special will be the start of you making your own wonderful memories.

NEW DAWN

Anoushka Shankar has revealed the line-up for Brighton Festival 2025, and here the Guest Director explains the inspiration behind her choices

Brighton Festival, the largest annual curated multi-arts festival in England, has revealed its programme for 2025.

This year’s Guest Director, the Grammy-nominated and genre-defying musician, composer and activist Anoushka Shankar, was inspired by the theme of ‘New Dawn’, working with Brighton Festival to shape a programme that imagines a hopeful future after a di cult time, celebrating our collective ability to recover, take action and come together to change the world for the better. Brighton Festival, a major event in the international arts calendar, has a long tradition of attracting some of the most exciting performers from across the globe,as well as promoting local artists, and presenting fresh, challenging new work. This year’s Festival takes place 3rd26th May, with 120 events across music, theatre, dance, circus, visual arts, film, literature, debate, outdoor and community throughout the city and beyond. There is something for everyone to enjoy.

How dark it is before dawn is a major new participatory event for Brighton Festival 2025 in which artists Doyel Joshi and Neil Ghose Balser of Howareyoufeeling. studio invite anyone and everyone to draw their ‘New Dawn’. The many hundreds of drawings will be showcased in a final, major exhibition at The Old Courtroom showcasing the city’s collective ideas for a new dawn and way forward. Drawing materials will be available in locations across Brighton and everyone can get involved.

“Together with the Brighton Festival team, I’ve been shaping a programme that envisions a hopeful future – an emergence from the dark of night into the glow of early morning,” Anoushka explains. “For years now there have been many reasons to worry, to lose hope. But we have the power within us to create an alternate future. That’s what Brighton Festival 2025 is about – let’s come together to reflect, lift each other up and take action. This is a festival for everyone to participate in, to connect with, to feel part of. I can’t wait.”

Anoushka has invited artists who have inspired her over the years, including mesmerising Pakistani-American vocalist

Arooj Aftab and Mercury Prize-nominated singer songwriter Nadine Shah.

Anoushka herself performs her new album, Chapter III: We Return to Light. With 30 years’ performing and 11 Grammy nominations, Anoushka has spent her career redefining conventions in the sitar and in world music. This performance marks the culmination of her recent trilogy of mini-albums; following Chapter I: Forever, For Now and Chapter II: How Dark it is Before Dawn, it completes the cycle.

Anoushka will co-host and perform in a specially curated version of Brown Girl In The Ring, supported by Dishoom Permit Room. The platform, founded by Sweety Kapoor, celebrates female talent across music, film and culture – featuring an exceptional cohort of award-winning poets, actors, dancers, musicians and activists including Mona Arshi, Nikita Gill, Anita Rani, Meera Syal (CBE) and Indira Varma. In dance, award-winning choreographer Aakash Odedra’s spiritual and captivating solo piece Songs of the Bulbul is inspired by the Persian myth of the caged bulbul bird’s final song, combining Indian classical dance with Sufi kathak and Islamic poetry to create a work of ‘exquisite beauty and sadness’ (The Scotsman). And renowned Bharatanatyam dancer Mythili Prakash presents Jwala, a spellbinding solo performance exploring fire as a symbol of destruction and rebirth, part of the international programme supported by Brighton Festival principal supporter The Pebble Trust.

Brighton Festival co-commission Theatre of Dreams is the thrilling new work from the world renowned Hofesh Shechter Company, that dives into a world of fantasy and the subconscious, revealing hidden fears, hopes, desires and emotions, accompanied by live musicians performing a cinematic score.

AYNA is a world premiere from BritishTurkish choreographer Ceyda Tanc, set in a nightclub with a live DJ and featuring an all-female cast, weaving Turkish folk traditions and athletic contemporary dance to explore our universal desire for love and belonging. In circus, with support from The Pebble Trust, Australia’s Circa return to Brighton Festival with their visionary Humans 2.0, combining acrobatics, contemporary dance and a pulsing electronic score to deliver a groundbreaking show that pushes physical limits to their extremes and questions what it means to be human.

The international theatre programme, supported by The Pebble Trust, includes Peruvian theatre company Teatro La Plaza’s defiant reinvention of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, performed by a remarkable community of actors all with Down syndrome.

In classical, Anoushka performs her father Ravi Shankar and American composer Philip Glass’s pioneering album Passages, for the first time since the BBC Proms in 2017, alongside an ensemble of Indian classical musicians and the Britten Sinfonia. And the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Brighton Festival Chorus play the UK premiere of Academy Award-winning film composer Rachel Portman’s new concerto, Tipping Point, as part of a nature-themed programme that also includes Sibelius’s orchestral hymn to the Finnish forests and American eco-activist composer John Luther Adams’s choral prayers to Mother Earth.

A special performance supported by the Bagri Foundation brings together two incredible talents for the first time: Aruna Sairam, a giant of Indian classical music, and Ganavya, a rising star who melds South Asian sounds with spiritual jazz.

In contemporary music, supported by Graves Son & Pilcher, ground-breaking electronic artist Max Cooper brings his most ambitious show yet to the Concert Hall: an immersive experience of luminous sculptures created with projections, lights and lasers accompanying his legendary

ambient and beat-driven soundscapes. And Shiva Soundsystem’s founder Nerm welcomes his friends and top secret star guests to the decks for a super special closing party for Brighton Festival 2025.

In world premiere Beside the Sea, photographers Martin Parr and JJ Waller have come together to create a ground-breaking exhibition of supersized photographs that can only be seen from the top deck of a bus fixed to the flat roofs of many of the city’s bus shelters.

For children and young people, Future City: Brighton 2125 calls all young makers, inventors and creators to come to Brighton Dome Corn Exchange to build a Brighton & Hove of the future using recycled materials. Supported by Brighton College Prep School, Pocket Shakespeare is a celebration of the ‘best bits’ of Shakespeare with former Children’s Laureates Michael Rosen and Chris Riddell.

Without Walls returns with plenty of free, family-friendly events in outdoor locations across Brighton and Crawley including Hydropunk, a fun and interactive installation in which participants must work together to conserve and recycle 1,000 litres of water; Eshu at the Crossroads, which brings the vibrancy of Yoruba culture to life with dance, puppetry and music, and Go Grandad, Go!, a hip-hop dance and theatre show exploring intergenerational family relationships.

The Children’s Parade, supported by Brighton Girls, is back for opening weekend, andBrighton Table Tennis Club returns with a Table Tennis Day for the whole family, with 20 tables, music and food, and Paralympic medal winners Will Bayley and Bly Twomey.

What’s clear is that thanks to Anoushka and the Brighton Festival team, this is going to be a month to remember.

Why Helm Gallery in Brighton is fast becoming Sussex’s hottest creative hub

Individuality, openness and community: Brighton’s Helm is more than a traditional gallery space. Throughout its two floors, the gallery has curated a varied programme of exhibitions, inspiring events and a social space; giving a platform to artists and creatives on a global scale. A place to discover your new favourite artist, build your art collection, enjoy a host of talks, performances and workshops – and don’t forget to try the cocktails. Helm Gallery is striving towards a fresh approach to the arts, an all-encompassing philosophy favouring the bold and unique.

Helm represents a culmination of all that is Brighton, and was brought to us by Luke Davis and Eden Maseyk. Absolutely met up with the latter to find out how they have managed to introduce something fresh to an already eclectic city, pushing more boundaries in the future, and how they are building on positive feedback.

“We wanted to reinvigorate Brighton's art scene”

Q Where does the story of Helm Gallery start?

A Helm Gallery was conceived as a collective vision to create an unprecedented arts and exhibition space in Brighton’s cultural quarter. The aim was to establish a destination where individuals from all walks of life could discover and engage with contemporary art. Helm’s entire ethos is centred around accessibility, inviting visitors to enjoy exhibitions, talks, and workshops, all within a social space that also o ers co ee and matchas during the day and a thoughtfully designed cocktail menu in the evenings with DJs on the weekends. We also wanted to reinvigorate Brighton’s art scene. Many of us have had years of experience at the forefront of Brighton’s creative industries and knew that a change to the way that galleries do things would be a move forward. We wanted less opacity and an honest approach, somewhere that you’re comfortable being advised on building a collection, investing in artwork or just exploring your own personal taste.

Q How long have you known Luke for and why was this venture perfect to go into business together on?

A I’ve known Luke since 2018, when I worked in a previous gallery. I helped him build his personal art collection, and over time, we developed a strong connection based on our shared passion for art. It felt like a natural progression to collaborate on Helm Gallery, as our vision completely aligned on what we felt was missing in the art world, particularly in Brighton.

Q Why is Brighton perfect for something like Helm Gallery?

A Brighton, known for its rich artistic culture, vibrant, open-minded community, and creative energy, serves as an ideal location for Helm Gallery. The city’s deep appreciation for contemporary and experimental art aligns with the gallery’s mission to bring fresh perspectives to an already thriving scene. Brighton’s diverse range of artists

and collectors makes it the perfect place to showcase groundbreaking work.

Q Once you had come up with the concept, how quickly did you get the space open?

A Once we finalised the concept, we very quickly found the perfect space. After securing it, we spent eight months renovating the entire building, transforming a derelict basement into a full exhibition area, while also adding a logistics space, bookshelf, and, of course, our beloved bar. From the initial idea to opening day, it took about 11 months in total.

Q In a nutshell, what are you looking to o er?

A Helm Gallery o ers a space for discovery, aiming to make art accessible and engaging for everyone. The gallery focuses on contemporary, thought-provoking pieces that push boundaries and fosters meaningful conversations around art and creativity. Visitors can enjoy a host of exhibitions, talks, performances, and

workshops, all within a social space that also o ers co ee and cocktails.

Q How pleased are you about the positive feedback to what you are trying to do?

A The response to Helm has been incredibly positive. Our top priority was creating a space where people feel truly comfortable, and that approach has led to multiple sell-out shows and a growing global collector base. In our first year alone, the gallery has shipped artwork to 21 countries, reflecting the strong reception to our vision and curation.

Q What are you looking to o er with the exhibitions you stage?

A The gallery strives to o er a platform for both emerging and established artists, presenting contemporary, thought-provoking works that challenge boundaries. By encouraging meaningful conversations about art and creativity, we aim to make art accessible and engaging

for all, ensuring that each visit to the space feels completely di erent from the last whilst also helping to connect artists with collectors on an international scale.

Q What exhibitions have you held that, for you, have really highlighted what Helm Gallery is all about?

A It would be hard to pick a favourite exhibition from one artist as they are all individually important to me for many reasons – but to celebrate our first anniversary, we transformed into a living, breathing studio environment. Throughout the opening weekend, visitors could observe a host of international artists – Margo in Margate, AROE, Poppy Faun, Euan Roberts, Graphic Rewilding, Dave Towers, Veera Sorri, and Miles Takes – as they created new works live in the gallery. This event exemplified our commitment to accessibility and engagement, allowing visitors to experience the artistic process first-hand.

Q Looking at the artists you work with, can you pick out five of them that are real stand outs right now for you and why?

A Preston Paperboy, Will Blood, Veera Sorri, Poppy Faun and Piers Henry. Each one has their own unique appeal among collectors and viewers in general, they represent an incredibly talented crop of emerging and mid-career artists that are causing waves both nationally and beyond. As a group they sum up the versatility of our roster, they cover a breadth of mediums and are continually exciting to work with.

Q What are you looking forward to over the coming months?

A Continuing to push the boundaries of what we can do within the space, reaching out to new collectors across the globe, expanding our roster and solidifying our positioning in the art world.

SECRET IS OUT

The Algarve’s Secret Season: luxury and laidback indulgence at Four Seasons Fairways

There’s something quietly magical about the Algarve in the o -season. When the golden summer crowds begin to thin and the pace softens, a di erent side of Portugal’s southern coast reveals itself. It’s a time of year locals quietly cherish, and seasoned travellers seek out the so-called Secret Season, when the days are still bathed in sunlight, the beaches are beautifully empty, and the rhythm of life slows to something altogether more indulgent. For those in the know, there is no better base from which to enjoy this more serene side of the Algarve than Four Seasons Fairways, a luxurious retreat nestled in the heart of Quinta do Lago.

O -season travel in the Algarve is an insider’s secret. The summer heat mellows to a gentle warmth, perfect for al fresco lunches, early evening strolls, and long, peaceful days spent outdoors. It’s also a time when the luxury of space and stillness becomes part of the appeal. You can wander along empty stretches of beach, book a table at even the most in-demand restaurants with ease, or tee o at Quinta do Lago’s worldclass golf courses without a wait in sight.

Four Seasons Fairways makes the most of this season of calm. The resort’s unique blend of villa-style accommodation with the convenience and service of a boutique hotel o ers guests the best of both worlds. Each villa or apartment is impeccably designed, spacious and private, complete with either a private pool or Jacuzzi, outdoor dining area and fully equipped kitchen.

Despite the space and privacy, you’re never far from luxurious touches and thoughtful service. The resort’s wellness centre is a peaceful haven for rest and rejuvenation, with an indoor heated pool, sauna, steam room, and treatment rooms o ering everything from massages to facials. For those who like to stay active, the gym is well equipped and hosts regular classes.

Food is central to the Four Seasons Fairways experience, and the quieter seasons o er even more opportunity to indulge. At VIVO, guests can ease into the day with fresh juices, excellent co ee, and breakfast dishes that make the most of seasonal ingredients. Come evening, Amara o ers a more refined a air. With panoramic views and a menu that celebrates modern Portuguese cuisine, dining here feels elegant yet relaxed, especially when paired with a bottle of local wine and the glow

of a Quinta do Lago sunset. Beyond the resort, o -season dining takes on a wonderfully languid rhythm. Long, wine-soaked lunches at places like 2 Passos perched overlooking the ocean, are practically a requirement. The service is unhurried, the views uninterrupted, and the freshly caught seafood, grilled to perfection.

The o -season is also ideal for exploring. Golf, of course, remains a major draw with Quinta do Lago’s courses world-renowned, and the fairways are just that little bit greener when you’re not playing in 30-degree heat. The same is true for tennis, padel, or even a gentle cycle along the wooden boardwalks that hug the Ria Formosa. For walkers, the nearby trails winding through pine forests and along the coast are quiet and wild, alive with the colours of nature and the sounds of migrating birds. You might spot flamingos or simply enjoy the salty breeze as you stroll along the sand dunes. For those craving a little adventure or culture, there are treasures to be discovered nearby. The cobbled streets and whitewashed buildings of Faro’s old town are perfect for a slow afternoon of exploring, while a boat trip to Estaminé – a restaurant set on a secluded island in the Ria Formosa – is a must. With its barefoot charm and unbeatable views, it’s

the kind of place that makes you feel as though you’ve stumbled upon a well-kept secret.

And perhaps that’s the real beauty of the Secret Season. At Four Seasons Fairways, everything is designed to let you settle in, slow down, and savour it all. Whether you’re curled up on a terrace with a book, sitting down to a long dinner at Amara, or watching the sun dip beneath the Atlantic after a day spent out in nature, it’s the kind of experience that lingers long after you’ve left.

As the rest of the world rushes on, there’s something quietly wonderful about choosing to pause. And in Quinta do Lago, at Four Seasons Fairways, the Secret Season might just be the most beautiful time of all.

A CULINARY JOURNEY

Exploring the history of San Carlo Restaurants

San Carlo Restaurants has etched its name into the annals of the UK dining scene as a symbol of Italian culinary excellence. Established in 1992, the brand has enjoyed a trajectory marked by growth, innovation, and a steadfast commitment to authentic Italian cuisine. From its humble beginnings to becoming a beloved institution, the history of San Carlo Restaurants is a story of passion, perseverance, and a dedication to flavour.

THE BEGINNING: A VISION COMES TO LIFE

The journey of San Carlo begins with its founder, Carlo Distefano. Originally from Sicily, Distefano brought with him a deep appreciation for Italian culinary traditions. The first San Carlo restaurant opened in the heart of Birmingham, a city that was, and still is, a melting pot of cultures. It quickly became known for its vibrant atmosphere and authentic dishes, setting the standard for Italian dining in the UK. Distefano’s vision was clear: to provide diners with not just food, but an experience that celebrated the richness

of Italian culture. With a keen focus on fresh ingredients and traditional recipes, the first San Carlo restaurant laid the groundwork for a brand that would soon expand beyond Birmingham.

EXPANSION AND GROWTH

The success of the original San Carlo restaurant led to a remarkable expansion. In the late 1990s, the brand began to grow, with new locations opening not just in Birmingham, but in other major cities across the UK. By prioritising quality and consistency, each new establishment upheld the standards set by the original restaurant.

The San Carlo experience goes beyond just food; it encompasses ambiance and service. The restaurants are designed to reflect the warmth of Italian hospitality, creating a space where guests feel welcome and valued. This commitment to excellence resonated with diners, leading to a loyal customer base that continued to grow.

LANDMARK EVENTS AND RECOGNITION

As the San Carlo brand solidified its presence in the UK, it garnered numerous accolades that underscored its reputation as a leader in the industry. The restaurant group received various awards for its exceptional food quality and innovative dining experiences. This recognition helped to elevate the status of San Carlo Restaurants, making them a preferred choice for locals and tourists alike.

THE EVOLVING MENU: TRADITION MEETS INNOVATION

One of the hallmarks of San Carlo Restaurants is its ability to adapt while

staying true to its roots. The menu has evolved over the years to include a range of dishes that reflect both traditional Italian cuisine and modern culinary trends. Seasonal ingredients are a focal point, ensuring that the menu remains fresh and exciting. Signature dishes such as wood-fired pizzas, handmade pasta, and fine seafood o er guests an authentic taste of Italy.

A BRIGHT FUTURE

As of 2025, San Carlo Restaurants continue to thrive, with several locations operating across London, Manchester, and beyond. The brand’s commitment to authenticity and quality, combined with its innovative approach to Italian cuisine, has ensured its place in the competitive landscape of the UK dining scene. Looking forward, the future appears promising – with plans for continued expansion and a focus on sustainability and community engagement, the company is poised to remain a staple of Italian dining in the UK. The journey

that began in Birmingham in 1992 has transformed into a rich history of passion, flavour, and an unwavering commitment to providing an unparalleled dining experience. San Carlo Restaurants stand not just as eateries, but as ambassadors of Italian culinary culture, reminding us that food is much more than sustenance – it’s a celebration of life.

Acclaimed chef James Golding has arrived at Rockwater with a plan to revolutionise their menus, as Absolutely discovers

Rockwater recently appointed acclaimed chef James Golding to lead the reinvention of its food o ering. The lifestyle hub has beachside locations in Hove and Branksome, with fine dining o ered upstairs on its terraces and a traditional beach bar menu closer to the water. James comes to Rockwater with extensive experience in the international dining scene including stints at The PIG Hotel Group, Le Caprice, J Sheekey, Soho House New York and the Savoy. He is working with the head chefs at both of Rockwater locations to completely redesign the upstairs menu with a brand new concept, and update the beach bar menu downstairs.

Absolutely headed to the beach to meet James and find out more about the new menus, and how his career is inspiring what he is cooking today.

Q What was your first job in a professional kitchen and how do you look back on that?

A My first professional job was at the Savoy hotel in London, I was an apprentice to Anton Edelmann. I did four years there and I really learnt the basis of classical French cookery, which I believe were the building blocks for my now cooking style.

Q Of the positions and places you have worked at since, which one has left the biggest impression on your career?

A I think Le Caprice and J Sheekey’s (best fish restaurant winner) gave me the real passion for modern British and fish lead style, although I would say The PIG hotels really gave me the confidence in using seasonal and local produce. My time in New York potentially gave me the building blocks for my management style as well.

Q Is it possible to describe your cooking style?

A I would say it’s a blend of modern British with Italian twists weaved through.

Q What attracted you to working with Rockwater?

A Luke [Davis, Rockwater founder] and I hit it o from the first meeting and I love the locations and forward-thinking attitude with Rockwater. It’s given me a real drive to create something very special with the menus there.

Q What new menus are you working on?

A We’ve simplified the downstairs menus to o er a real family feel so we can adapt the

o ering upstairs to a more refined approach, giving the restaurants a real defining di erence. We’re currently looking at our spring season menus that will be featuring new season asparagus, force rhubarb, and some of the best fish and shellfish available in the local areas coming very soon.

Q With the ‘fish-forward’ approach, can you give us an idea of the kind of dishes we can expect?

A The inspiration for the terrace comes from my time as sous chef at J Sheekys and one of Luke’s favourite restaurants, Scott’s in Mayfair. Think fresh fish-forward o erings, with refined simple dishes that allow all of the incredible fish and shellfish to sing on the plates, for customers to enjoy alongside views of the beautiful sea while you’re eating them!

Q Do you get great satisfaction working with local suppliers?

A Yes, I’ve spent many years working with the best producers in the UK and have developed great relationships with many of them. I can’t wait to continue these relationships while developing the menus and food concept at Rockwater.

Q What else is to come?

A We’re extremely excited about the opening of Rockwater Sandbanks. The food o ering will be slightly di erent to the other restaurants, as it will have a more relaxed beachside vibe – think lobster rolls, refined street food, BBQ stick menus. It’s going to be so much fun and very cool!

The masters of English aromatic still wine

Fizz on the go

Tucked away in the South Downs near Pulborough, West Sussex, Stopham specialises in aromatic still wines, crafting some of the country’s finest Pinot Gris, Bacchus, and Pinot Blanc. And they’ve got the silverware to prove it, racking up awards from WineGB and the Independent English Wine Awards like it’s no big deal.

Founded in 2007 by Simon Woodhead, a former McLaren F1 engineer, Stopham takes the same precision and craft that goes into fine-tuning race cars and applies it to winemaking. But don’t mistake precision for over-engineering - they are all about guiding the grapes, not micromanaging them. From meticulously managed vineyards to minimal-intervention techniques in the winery, their approach lets the fruit do the talking, resulting in vibrant, aromatic wines with crisp acidity and layers of delicate complexity that rank among England’s finest still wines.

Sustainability is at the heart of the operation, too, and if you fancy a closer look, their vineyard tours and tastings o er the perfect excuse to sip awardwinning wine while soaking in the Sussex countryside.

LETTER TO THE

LA jewellery designer Maya Brenner developed a cult following for her initial necklaces. Absolutely visits her studio

Is this the age of personalisation? Everyone wants something authentic, something with meaning – and, increasingly, brands are o ering us ways of becoming part of a product’s story. We want to take an active role, rather than simply consuming. So whether it’s designing our own trainers, engraving names into hairbrushes or creating our own perfumes, the notion of identity is very much a part of today’s shopping experience. And LA-based jeweller Maya Brenner is very much part of the zeitgeist. Her business started small, about 20 years ago, when she started making pretty necklaces featuring charms and initials, firstly as a hobby while she was working as a social worker, and later as a business. But when Meghan Markle was pictured wearing one in 2008, things really took o this side of the Atlantic. Orders started flooding in and in 2021 Maya opened a showroom – and now I have headed there to design my own necklace, because the brand’s best-seller remains the customisable asymmetrical letter necklace as worn by the Duchess of Sussex. Not that you actually need to come in person. Maya’s website features a clever interactive design tool that allows you to choose, arrange and rearrange as many letters, charms and birthstones as you please. But in the brand’s airy base, there’s a team of friendly faces to help you decide, and of course seeing the actual pieces is a bonus. First there’s chain length – all chains are 14k gold, making them strong and durable; there’s yellow, white or rose to choose from. And then there are the charms, which are welded onto the chain rather than simply hung in the usual way, and this is what creates the signature asymmetric look. Of course you can fit as many or as

few as you like; I’m going for three, thinking that odd numbers look more striking. Heart, moon, angel wing, Om, paw print, Hamsa or cross? Gold or pave? In the end I choose a P, a crescent moon and an opal (not my actual birthstone but why should it be?).

All orders are made here, by Maya’s assistant who relocated here from California. The beauty of these necklaces is that they can keep evolving – clients are always coming back to add letters after, say, having a baby, or to remove letters (after, say, a divorce) – and repairs and cleaning are always o ered.

Dream continues

The big day is over and now the happy couple deserve a break to remember. Prezola pick out the honeymoon trends we can expect to see in 2025

As newlyweds look forward to their dream getaways, Prezola, the UK’s favourite honeymoon fund and wedding gift registry, has revealed the latest honeymoon trends for 2025. From dream destinations to budget preferences, sustainability concerns, and the rise of the ‘buddymoon’, this year’s trends highlight how couples are reimagining their post-wedding travels.

TOP THREE DESTINATIONS

According to Prezola’s latest survey, Greece, Italy, and (yes) the UK have emerged as the most sought-after honeymoon destinations for newlyweds. While classic European hotspots continue to reign, an increasing number of couples are opting for staycations within the UK, highlighting a shift towards domestic travel.

“Greece is the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation,” Hayley Stout, marketing director at Prezola says. “Spend your days exploring ancient ruins, islandhopping in the Aegean, or unwinding in a quiet taverna with fresh seafood and local wine. Whether it’s Santorini’s sunsets, Mykonos’ energy, or hidden beaches on lesser-known islands, Greece delivers unforgettable moments without trying too hard. With its breathtaking landscapes, rich culture, and endless opportunities to explore, it’s no surprise Greece is a top honeymoon destination.

“Italy is all about e ortless romance,” Hayley continues. “Drive through Tuscany’s rolling hills, take a slow afternoon in a Roman piazza, or explore Venice by gondola. It’s a place where food, culture, and history come together seamlessly – whether you’re sipping wine in a quiet village or watching the Amalfi Coast turn golden

SANTORINI

at sunset. From world-famous cuisine to stunning scenery, Italy o ers the kind of timeless beauty that makes it one of the most popular honeymoon choices.”

And what about the UK? “The UK o ers a di erent kind of honeymoon – think cosy countryside escapes, dramatic coastal walks, and historic cities. Stay in a grand Scottish castle, explore the Cotswolds' charming villages, or experience London’s top restaurants and theatre. With 2025’s royal celebrations adding extra buzz, it’s the perfect time to see the UK at its best. Its mix of history, luxury, and stunning landscapes makes it an increasingly sought-after honeymoon spot for couples looking for something unique.”

BUDGET & FUNDING

With the rising cost of travel, many couples are turning to honeymoon fund tools to help finance their trips. Prezola found that 68% of couples used a honeymoon fund tool within their wedding registry to cover their honeymoon expenses.

The most common honeymoon budget falls between £2,000 and £3,000, and 44% of couples planned their honeymoon within less than six months, indicating a growing trend toward shorter planning timelines.

Some 43% of couples opted for multiple honeymoon experiences, such as a ‘mini moon’ immediately after the wedding, followed by a longer, more elaborate trip later.

RISE OF THE ‘BUDDYMOON’

While honeymoons are traditionally an intimate getaway, 16% of couples said they would consider a ‘buddymoon’ – a

honeymoon shared with friends or family. This growing trend reflects a shift towards more social, experience-driven travel.

HOW COUPLES ARE TRAVELLING

The way couples experience their honeymoons is also evolving. While 40% of newlyweds prefer a single-location honeymoon, another 40% choose to explore three or more places during their trip – and 34% of couples admitted that social media heavily influenced their honeymoon choices, showcasing the role of platforms like Instagram and TikTok in shaping travel preferences. Modern couples are placing greater importance on sustainability and ethical travel practices. Half of respondents reported that environmental concerns played a significant role in their honeymoon planning. This signals a growing demand for eco-friendly resorts, carbon-neutral flights, and ethical tourism experiences.

THE PERFECT HONEYMOON

From white sandy beaches to adrenalinefueled adventures, couples are looking for a well-rounded honeymoon experience. Relaxation, adventure, beaches, and

cultural immersion were the top priorities when planning their trips, indicating that newlyweds want both excitement and downtime on their getaways.

For many couples, the honeymoon is just the beginning of a lifelong love a air with their destination. Some 56% of respondents said they plan to return to their honeymoon spot in the future, proving that these trips create cherished memories that last well beyond the wedding day.

“At Prezola, we’ve always believed that your honeymoon should be as unique as you both, and our latest insights show that couples in 2025 are embracing that more than ever,” adds Hayley. “From the rise of multi-stop adventures and buddymoons to a growing focus on sustainability and ethical travel, newlyweds are designing honeymoons that reflect their values and passions. Whether it’s a dreamy Greek island escape, a road trip through Italy, or a luxury UK staycation, couples are making memories that last a lifetime –often with the help of honeymoon funds. It’s incredible to see how modern couples are redefining this special trip, and we love being part of that journey.”

“The honeymoon is just the beginning of a lifelong love affair with their destination ”

Why you really should think about pre and post nuptial agreements

s you are planning for your wedding with all the excitement of looking forward to your lives together, I suspect you would want to skip over this article which suggests some element of distrust or makes this all feel transactional, whilst dampening the romanticism – but please hear me out. Think of a pre/post nuptial agreement like an insurance policy that you probably will never need to use, but it is there just in case.

WHO THESE APPLY TO

It is a common misconception that these agreements only apply to the super wealthy, not helped by a case recently reported in the news, where a wealthy couples' pre-nuptial agreement was challenged by the husband who contested, amongst many financial requests, that an additional £26,000 was necessary as a food allowance as he couldn’t cook. Incidentally the judge ruled that he should learn to cook as “it is not di cult”. Pre and post-nuptials also make immediate sense too for those about to enter a new marriage, but where one or both partners have divorced before and perhaps have children whose

inheritance they wish to safeguard. Marrying with assets? Many couples are getting married having already purchased a property, accrued a pension pot or possibly inherited funds. These are all assets that you would be upset to lose in the future if you were to separate.

JUST IN CASE… READ ON

For any pre-nuptial agreement to be enforceable by the family court you need to be able to demonstrate:

1. You obtained independent legal advice from an experienced family lawyer who is ideally a member of Resolution – the professional body for family lawyers that are focused on settling agreements amicably and with the minimum of cost and anxiety.

2. The agreement is prepared well in advance of the wedding to ensure there is no undue pressure to sign. If there is not enough time before the wedding, a post nuptial agreement can be prepared.

3. There has been full financial disclosure by both partners to ensure total transparency of the financial position of the other. This ensures you are entering the agreement having su cient information to make an informed decision of the implications.

4. There are regular reviews included in the agreement to take into consideration life changing events such as the arrival of children or chronic illness, and also longevity of a relationship, which over time suggests increased sharing of all assets.

WHAT CAN THE AGREEMENT INCLUDE?

• Assets you bring into the marriage;

• The family home;

• Any inherited funds;

• Money in joint accounts and joint property;

• Savings accrued during the marriage;

• Pensions;

• Debts;

• Maintenance and of so for how long;

• Financial arrangements for any children;

• Assets if either of you die.

Professional colour in the capital

Backstage is Ukraine’s largest hair salon group, and it recently bought the Duck & Dry chain of blow dry bars. The King’s Road site is spacious, with a fresh, new feel and friendly sta . Locals keep coming in for a blow dry and are surprised to learn that the o ering has expanded widely – and colour treatments are now a salon speciality. I’m here for some highlights and a spring refresh, and Raul is full of ideas. Flicking through pictures on his phone, he is suggesting that I go for a ‘creamier’ blonde and ditch the ashiness of my old highlights. I’m ready for this, and he proceeds with more care and attention than I’m used to. “I’m thinking ahead to your toner,” he says, thoughtfully. And wondering what kind of shade would I prefer, to a nanodegree that I can barely imagine. So I leave it to him, and he meticulously paints carefully selected strands of hair and wraps them in foil for some time before he’s satisfied that everything is just as it should be. Timing it perfectly and following up with a moisturising treatment, my colour is revealed to be just as promised: rich and warm rather than ashy, with particular attention to the strands around my face. A skilled blowdry leaves my usually flat locks infused with bounce and life that lasts well into the next few days. And that’s a record for me. Thank you Raul!

Crestview on the Sussex coast is a project from Lucinda Sanford Here, she tells Absolutely about how the sea inspired the design and her love for quirky touches

Q Can you tell us a little bit about the location of the property?

A The property is situated on the coast in East Preston, a charming seaside village. It sits within a private estate, o ering both exclusivity and stunning coastal views.

Q Did the proximity to the sea inspire your design choices?

A Absolutely. We wanted to bring elements of the sea into the interiors while respecting the home’s existing character. The previous owners had decorated it 50 years ago with beautiful, traditional features like wood paneling and intricate cornicing. Since we aimed to preserve these, we balanced nautical influences with the home’s more classic elements, especially in the formal areas.

Q What was the brief for the Crestview project?

A The new owners wanted to retain the original charm of the house while making it more functional for modern family life. The craftsmanship from the 1950s was exceptional, but some updates were essential – such as replacing the original kitchen, which was more of a museum piece than a usable space. We also opened up the separate dining room to create a more practical, connected living space, while still maintaining a sense of distinction between the rooms.

Q Were there any major challenges you had to overcome?

A Rewiring was particularly tricky due to the detailed existing paneling – we had to be very careful not to damage it while running new cables. Additionally, the thatched roof, while a beautiful and special feature, required careful restoration and ongoing maintenance.

Q Was there a specific colour palette you implemented throughout the property?

A We leaned into natural tones that suited the house’s character. Soft pinks and greens worked beautifully with the wood and joinery, while the master bedroom took inspiration from the breathtaking sea view, incorporating serene blue hues. A lovely Colefax wallpaper with a subtle, seaweedlike design helped bring the coastal influence indoors. In the children’s room, we fully embraced the beachside charm with a playful beach hut-themed wallpaper.

Q How did you approach the design of the bedrooms? Was there a common theme or individual styling?

A Each bedroom retained its own character while respecting the home’s original features. One room, for example, had stunning wood paneling that we kept light and fresh. A charming retro

green basin was already in place, so we played o that colour with striped curtains and a matching headboard.

Q Did you incorporate a nautical theme in the bathrooms?

A In some ways, yes. On the first floor, we decided to keep much of the original 1970s brown tiling because it was genuinely beautiful and added character. We even kept an ashtray by the loo, which we found amusing! The master bathroom was completely new, featuring a stunning sea-blue palette. Meanwhile, the children’s bathroom retained its original suite and colour scheme.

Q What transformations did you make in the kitchen?

A The kitchen was entirely redesigned. We introduced a matte, contemporary style to contrast with the home’s more traditional

features while incorporating green accents from the sitting room. To add vibrancy, we used touches of yellow, which were echoed in the dining room curtains and lighting.

Q Was there anything unique about the living room spaces?

A The living room has an unusual shape due to a later extension, which means the fireplace isn’t centred. Personally, I love a bit of asymmetry – it adds character. We turned the L-shaped area into a cozy space for games, and despite its o -centre placement, the substantial fireplace and gas grate still warm the entire room beautifully.

Q Are there any subtle design details you’re particularly proud of?

A I love how we respected the home’s original character while giving it a fresh, modern edge. I believe in working with a house rather than against it, and Crestview still feels very much like a home rooted in its estate history – just with an updated, playful energy.

Q What’s your favourite part of the Crestview project?

A It’s hard to beat the view – but of course, we can’t take credit for that! Beyond that, I love the sense of space we created, especially by adding an additional bathroom. The charming Bowood room, which was previously a bathroom, now contributes to a better balance in the house, with three substantial bedrooms on the first floor and a cozy children’s nursery on the ground floor.

The In Crowd

Brighton Museum & Art Gallery celebrates iconic 1960s Mod style

Brighton Museum & Art Gallery is set to turn back the clock to one of the most stylish and revolutionary eras in British culture with its new exhibition, The In Crowd: Mod Fashion & Style 1958-66. Opening on 10th May, this highly anticipated showcase, sponsored by original Brighton Mod brand Ben Sherman, will bring to life the bold style, youthful rebellion, and cultural impact that defined a generation.

The exhibition will feature over 35 dressed mannequins showcasing rare and early Mod outfits drawn from the renowned collection of Roger K. Burton, an expert in vintage fashion. The one-of-a-kind pieces will give visitors an up-close look at the revolutionary style that challenged the norms of the time. With over 50 years of experience, curator Roger K Burton has styled films including Quadrophenia and Absolute Beginners and worked with cultural icons such as David Bowie, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.

Roger has crafted an exhibition that goes beyond clothing. “The In Crowd: Mod Fashion & Style 1958-66 isn’t just about the clothes; it’s about capturing the restless spirit of a generation,” Roger explains. “Emerging in post-war Britain, the Mods rejected the 1950s, favouring sharp tailoring, bold colours, and a sense of modernity that captured the spirit of youth culture. More than just a fashion statement, they embraced a fresh outlook on life, celebrating youth, freedom, and modernity in ways that continue to inspire today.”

The exhibition showcases the influential designers who defined the Mod movement with sleek miniskirts, sharp suits, and crisp button-down shirts that embodied its forward-thinking spirit. “These garments were statements of individuality, rebellion, and modernity,” says Roger.

Founded in Brighton in 1963, Ben Sherman has become a symbol of sharp British

style, favoured by the Mod movement for its tailored designs and contemporary aesthetics. With its first store opening in Brighton, the brand has maintained strong ties to the city. Sponsoring The In Crowd: Mod Fashion & Style 1958-66, Ben Sherman rea rms its legacy as a brand synonymous with Mod culture.

While the Mod era had faded by the late 1960s, its legacy lived on. Mods crafted a distinctly British lifestyle in its sharpness and sophistication, yet boldly modern in its perspective. Their influence extended far beyond Britain, shaping fashion around the world.
