ABSOLUTELY’S November issue highlights

Iremember Christmas gifts as indicators of where I was in my life at the time. The first one I truly remember was the Millennium Falcon toy from Star Wars – I don't think I have ever been so in awe since. Then around 11 I recall being gifted my first football shirt, swiftly followed a year later by some boots when I decided to try and emulate my sporting heroes. Into the teens and it was all computer games (I spent FAR too long holed up in my room on the ever-evolving consoles, from my beloved ZX Spectrum to an Amiga), and as I hit university it was money, which was swiftly spent down the pub.
As I have got older, yes, I have become that hard to buy for person. It's not deliberate, or due to any kind of fatigue around Christmas (I love this time of the year), but I genuinely don't ever know what I want when asked. One year I did actually receive pants and socks, although a few hours later my 'real' present came out and it was all a big laugh.
So when our gift guide special comes around, it's very much not just work for me. I am really intrigued to know what kind of goodies are hitting the market this year. I have certainly got my eye on the Fujifilm instant camera and maybe, finally, I can embrace that love for photography in 2026.
If you are someone who prefers to see things in the flesh, don't miss our Hertfordshire Christmas market round up – it's a true gift.

A new chapter has been launched at Watford Palace Theatre, with plenty to excite creatives, theatre-goers and Hertfordshire locals

Watford Palace Theatre, a cultural landmark since 1908, has unveiled the opening of five newly developed creative spaces, transforming the theatre into a futurefacing, multi-media creative hub at the heart of Watford for generations to come. With a legacy that includes giving early career opportunities to talents such as Ben Kingsley, Alison Steadman, and Vicky McClure, Watford is no stranger to nurturing the extraordinary. Watford Palace Theatre is now laying the foundations for the next generation of artists, audiences, and innovators - as CEO Steve Marmion explains.
Q What was the driving force behind reimagining Watford Palace Theatre into a multi-media creative hub?
A We are in the heart of the creative industries here. And I know from experience on shows like Fleabag and Baby Reindeer that artists and audiences will engage with the work in different ways on different stages and screens. We wanted to make sure that we have ways of supporting the work we believe in across mediums, extending reach and opportunities for artists, technicians, administrators and audiences to thrive.
Q Can you tell us more about the inspiration behind the newly developed creative spaces?
A Studio One is about capturing content, whether that is audience reactions, rehearsals or podcasts.
Studio Two is more industry and development facing hosting workshops of new projects for producers and programmers to get excited by. It is also the home for our thriving Young Company who take centre stage in the summer (with a big musical) and the winter (as the panto ensemble). We also have new bars, arcade machines, fortune telling machines, dancing marionettes and more – on free play – to entertain and distract!
Q How do you hope the 1908 Cabaret space will reshape community engagement with the theatre?
A It’s going to be a mixture of sip-and-craft type events and open mics. We hope we will get a mixture of pros and community members alongside one another, with a glass of something glamorous.
Q The Studios support everything from podcasting to rehearsals – how important is it for a regional theatre to embrace digital content alongside live performance?
A The new model for emerging stand ups
and musicians is no longer just the clubs and arts centres, it’s TikTok and Instagram and going viral. When they reach the point they can sell the big theatre they are in a position to make a living from the industry. This is where we want to get people as soon as possible. If it takes too long you lose the working class and minority artists from the industry fairly fast.
Q The Watford Palace Workshop has a strong community element...
A As one of the originators of Theatre in Education (TIE) the company remains proud of, and committed to, engaging our communities with opportunities to create and occupy our stages. Working in close partnership with Watford Borough Council we have developed a vision for a building opposite the theatre that used to be our scenic workshop (in the 40s). The Watford Palace Workshop will be a place to build – hosting our professional rehearsals alongside our community groups (such as the Chinese Association’s Thai Chi sessions). They will share the same green room and social spaces, they will be our “sneak preview” audiences, and when they have something in mind – they will be the stars!
Q How vital is inclusivity to the theatre’s future?
A Without it we have no future. Theatre has to find new audiences. That doesn’t mean forgetting about our existing ones, but we need to extend our reach and attractiveness very fast in my view.
Q Watford has a legacy of nurturing world-class talent. How do you see these new facilities helping the next generation follow in those footsteps?
A No-one seems to have just the one job
anymore. These facilities mean that the next generation can be experimenting and delivering on a variety of stages, screens and headphones. Then they can see where their skills, passions and abilities to make a living lie.
Q How do you strike the right balance between attracting loyal theatregoers and bringing in new audiences who might not normally attend?
A Put on a broader variety of work. The second half of the phrase “Something for Everyone” is “Everything for No-one”. I’d be surprised if there’s anyone (myself included) who fancies seeing everything we have on and that’s how it should be. We are producing and presenting more shows than ever before – more plays, but also more music nights, more drag, more family work and more comedy.
Q The annual panto is always a big draw – what can audiences expect from this year’s production?
A Some absolute bangers, some real howlers and a lot of beans. It’s set to be our biggest and best one yet, and I can vouch for the cast being incredible.
Q Having Stephen Fry as the voice of the giant is a big coup – how did that collaboration come about?
A He’s an old friend of mine and the theatres. He has performed here and been a regular at (and in) my pantos over the years. I tell you what though, it’s helluva nerve wracking when you send the script. I check every apostrophe and only the finest gags will do!
Q How do the new creative spaces feed into the festive season – will we see Christmas cabaret, community showcases, or other seasonal surprises?
A We have a couple of last-minute surprises for you already. The brilliant podcast Drunk Women Solving Crime is recording some shows with us and Professor Brian Cox is performing his work in progress. And yes, there is more to come, keep an eye on the socials or sign up for the newsletter please!
Q The holiday period is often a family affair. How are you tailoring programming and experiences to different generations?
A Panto is the great multi-generational entertainer, but we have a lot of comics, drag artists and bands that also build these bridges. We have bring your baby comedy and Broadway shows. And the food offer front of house is Bring-Your-Own, so if one group want McD’s and another fancy a Pret, you can sit together at our place and eat them together (let us do the drinks though – cup of tea for just a pound).
Q How excited are you about what the future holds for Watford Palace Theatre?
A The next chapter starts now. I don’t think anyone else is doing it quite like this, and with the amazing support of the local council and the arts council we have the opportunity to affect real change for new artists and audiences across the region and beyond.

Don't leave things until the last minute as here at Absolutely we take great delight in compiling our gift guides that hopefully cover all bases. Also don't miss our round up of the best Christmas markets in Hertfordshire. The countdown officially starts here...

To get you into the mood for our Christmas gift guide special, here’s a rundown of the best festive events where you can uncover something a little special

KNEBWORTH CHRISTMAS FAIR
21–23 NOVEMBER
The Knebworth Christmas Fair is one of the largest festive shopping events in Hertfordshire, drawing thousands of visitors each year. Held in the grounds of Knebworth House, this three-day market brings together more than 250 exhibitors offering everything from handmade crafts and homeware to fashion, seasonal decorations, and gourmet treats. It’s an ideal place to find unusual stocking fillers, one-off gifts, and artisan food and drink. The fair is housed in large heated marquees and barns, so it’s comfortable whatever the weather. Visitors can browse stalls at leisure, enjoy tastings, and chat with the makers themselves. Food and drink play a big role too, with stalls selling cheeses, chutneys, cakes, craft gins, and festive hot drinks to keep you warm while you shop. With its scale and quality, the Knebworth Christmas Fair is a perfect way to kick off the festive season and tick off a big chunk of your Christmas shopping list in one go.

28–30 NOVEMBER
Hertford embraces the festive season in style with a double celebration: the towncentre Christmas Gala and the Hertford Castle Christmas Market. The Gala begins on Friday 28th November, transforming the town with market stalls, street food, fairground rides, live music, and the allimportant Christmas lights switch-on. The High Street buzzes with shoppers and families enjoying the entertainment.
At the same time, the historic grounds of Hertford Castle host a three-day Christmas market. From Friday evening through to Sunday, the castle is filled with stalls selling crafts, gifts, decorations, and seasonal food and drink. Fairground rides and children’s activities add to the family-friendly vibe, while live entertainment keeps the atmosphere festive. The combination of town and castle makes this one of Hertfordshire’s most charming Christmas experiences.
HERTFORDSHIRE
6–7 DECEMBER
The Hertfordshire Christmas Shopping Fair at Redbourn Showground is a must for anyone who loves browsing a huge variety of stalls under one roof. Taking place over the weekend of 6th and 7th December, it hosts more than 150 exhibitors offering gifts, fashion, jewellery, crafts, decorations, and artisan food and drink. The size of the event makes it ideal
for anyone wanting to complete their Christmas shopping in a single visit.
The showground provides plenty of space, with both indoor and outdoor areas. Inside, visitors can explore long aisles of gift stalls, while outside there are food vendors selling hot treats, mulled wine, and festive street food. Many stalls feature local makers and small businesses, so it’s a good opportunity to buy something unique and support independent traders.
For a more intimate festive shopping experience, head to Hoddesdon for Hertfordshire’s Annual Christmas Fair, held at the Hertfordshire Golf & Country Club. The venue, set in the elegant Broxbournebury Mansion, provides a unique and atmospheric backdrop.
The fair runs from late morning into the afternoon, giving visitors a chance to browse stalls selling handmade gifts, crafts, beauty products, and homewares. Many stalls are run by small, local businesses, making this an excellent place to find thoughtful and original presents. With fewer crowds than some of the county’s larger events, it offers a calmer, more leisurely shopping environment.
The setting itself adds to the charm. The mansion’s historic interiors and grounds are beautifully decorated for Christmas, with twinkling lights and seasonal displays creating a welcoming atmosphere. Refreshments are available, and visitors can enjoy festive treats such as mulled wine, mince pies, and hot drinks.

30 NOVEMBER
Tring’s annual Christmas Festival is a highlight of the season. Taking place on Saturday 30th November, the festival transforms Tring High Street into a bustling festive scene. From mid-afternoon into the evening, the streets fill with market stalls, food vendors, entertainers, and crowds of visitors ready to enjoy the start of the Christmas season.
The atmosphere is lively and familyfriendly, with shops staying open late and stallholders selling gifts, crafts, and festive treats. A funfair provides plenty of excitement for children, while Santa’s grotto ensures little ones get a magical encounter.
Live entertainment is another highlight, with choirs, local bands, and performers creating a cheerful soundtrack to the evening. Food and drink stalls serve up warming mulled wine, hot chocolate, roasted chestnuts, and other seasonal favourites.
24 NOVEMBER
The Harpenden Christmas Carnival is one of Hertfordshire’s best-loved festive events, drawing thousands of visitors each year. Taking place on Sunday 24th November, the carnival combines a bustling market with live entertainment, family activities, and the town’s Christmas light switch-on.
The event runs from midday into the early evening, with the High Street lined with stalls selling gifts, food, crafts, and festive decorations. Local traders and community groups also take part, giving it a strong community spirit. Children can enjoy fairground rides and activities, while Santa makes an appearance to delight younger visitors.
A highlight of the day is the procession, which usually takes place mid-afternoon and features floats, performers, and local groups parading through the town. The carnival atmosphere continues with live

music, choirs, and entertainment on stage, creating a warm and festive buzz.
The farmers’ market expands for the day, offering seasonal produce and artisan goods, making it a great opportunity to stock up on treats for Christmas.
28 NOVEMBER
Buntingford’s Late Night Christmas Shopping evening is a charming community event that brings a festive glow to this market town. Taking place on Friday 28th November, the event sees local shops stay open late, while the High Street comes alive with decorations, stalls, and seasonal entertainment.
The focus here is as much on atmosphere as it is on shopping. Visitors can wander the illuminated streets, browse for gifts in independent shops, and enjoy festive treats from pop-up stalls and local cafés. Carol singers and live performers add to the cheer. The event is particularly popular with families, who can enjoy the
relaxed, safe setting and community feel. It’s a chance to support local businesses, discover unique gifts, and enjoy a night out with neighbours and friends.
6–7 & 13–14 DECEMBER
The Old Manor in Potters Bar is home to a pair of festive gift fairs in December 2025, held over two consecutive weekends. These smaller, more intimate events focus on local crafts, gifts, and seasonal products, making them a relaxed alternative to the larger county-wide fairs. Visitors can expect a range of stalls featuring handmade jewellery, home décor, festive decorations, and artisan food and drink. The setting of the Old Manor adds to the atmosphere, creating a cosy setting. Because of their smaller scale, these fairs are particularly enjoyable if you want to avoid large crowds and spend more time chatting with stallholders. It’s an excellent opportunity to support local makers and find unique, personal gifts.

Support natural woodlands and wildlife with Capital Gardens’ pot grown Christmas trees
Nothing says Christmas quite like a real tree
othing says Christmas quite like a real tree. The distinctive fragrance, sparkling decorations, and glowing lights really do create the heart of a festive home. At Capital Gardens, they know just how important it is to find the perfect tree. That’s why they partner with trusted UK growers, Needlefresh, to bring you the very best in quality and choice. Step into any of their Garden Centres and you’ll discover a wide range of Christmas trees, along with everything you need to decorate and light them. Quite simply, they’re your one-stop Christmas tree destination.
Give Your Pot-Grown Christmas Tree a Second Life

Needlefresh has supplied Capital Gardens’ Christmas trees for more than 25 years and in 2023 they launched a new initiative with them. Their customers can return their pot-grown trees after the Christmas celebrations, for replanting in a woodland.
Thanks to the fantastic response, Capital Gardens is delighted to continue this scheme across all five of their centres: SherfieldOn-Loddon, Alexandra Palace, East Sheen, Wandsworth, and Berkhamstead.
In partnership with Yattendon Estates, your returned tree is planted in a natural clearing within a mature woodland. This area is largely broadleaf forest, where the older trees provide essential shelter to help young Christmas trees establish and flourish. Your tree will continue to absorb carbon, provide shelter for wildlife and thrive in a natural woodland setting, making it a truly eco-friendly choice.
All you need to do is water your tree throughout the festive season, so it stays healthy and alive. Then return it to any of the five Garden Centres by the 11th January 2026. They will replant it, and, as
a thank you, you’ll receive a voucher for 20% off your next year’s Christmas tree.
Explore Their Christmas Tree Collection
Whatever your space, style, or budget, Capital Gardens have the tree for you. Their reduced-drop varieties range from the everpopular Nordmann Fir through to the Blue Spruce, Norway Spruce, Fraser Fir, Noble Fir, and Omorika Spruce, each with its own unique charm.
NORDMANN FIR
With its classic outline and glossy green foliage, the Nordmann Fir is the UK’s favourite Christmas tree. Strong tiered branches make it perfect for hanging decorations, while its soft needles are child and pet-friendly.
FRASER FIR
Compact and conical in shape, the Fraser Fir is ideal for smaller rooms. It brings a wonderful festive fragrance and its dense, green-silver branches create a lush backdrop for lights and baubles.
NOBLE FIR
The Noble Fir combines elegance with practicality. Blue-green foliage, a gentle fragrance, superb needle retention, and open branching make it the ultimate tree for showcasing larger decorations.

The Silver Cup in Harpenden to meet the siblings behind it and see how it felt to be named one of the UK’s top gastropubs

Q We featured you back in 2021 – how have the four years since gone for you?
FOOD & BEVERAGE DIRECTOR, OLIVIA
REEDER: The last four years have flown by. We have been focusing on evolving the business and frequently adapting strategies to continue growing while overcoming industry challenges.
Q A recent announcement has been the launch of the à la carte menu. What inspired that change of direction?
CHEF PATRON, MATT REEDER: After listening to feedback, it was clear that many of our guests were looking for more flexibility and freedom when dining. We wanted to give our guests more choice and accessibility when dining with us. The à la carte menu allows us to showcase the best of the season and our suppliers, while letting people enjoy the pub in whatever way suits them, whether that’s a light bite midweek with friends or a special occasion meal with family.
Q How have you approached the new menu?
MATT: We have approached the menu with the key to it being accessibility. We have stayed true to our roots, fresh, seasonal, locally sourced where possible, and always cooked from scratch. We’ve kept the
balance between classic pub favourites and dishes that celebrate great British produce in a slightly elevated way.
Q What for you have been some of the stand-out dishes over summer?
OLIVIA: Through the summer and warmer months lighter plates and in particular fish dishes resonate with our guests. Our roasted turbot on the bone has been a stand out with guests. Our fish is line caught in Cornwall and from boat to plate in 48 hours.
Q Do you still make use of local produce?
OLIVIA: Absolutely. We work with some of the best British suppliers, from butchers to fishmongers to local farms, because we believe the quality of the ingredients shines through in the finished dish. That’s at the heart of everything we do selecting only the best of what’s in season, offering the finest quality.
Q What are you looking to offer with the snacks menu?
OLIVIA: Something relaxed and casual, the sort of dishes that work perfectly with a pint or a glass of wine, again ensuring accessibility. It’s about creating options for people who want to graze, share, or just

enjoy a quick bite without committing to a full meal in our bar or garden. A pub is about both the drink and food. We work hard to create a vibrant atmosphere with both the drinking and dining trade for a social space.
Q What ingredients are you looking forward to using come autumn?
MATT: Autumn is one of our favourite seasons. Game, root vegetables, wild mushrooms, and orchard fruits all come into their own. It’s a chance to bring richer, deeper flavours to the menu and create proper comforting dishes.
Q What do you have lined up for the impending festive season?
OLIVIA: We will have a new seasonal menu towards the end of November alongside special Christmas opening hours. We can’t wait for the festive period. One of our favourite things about owning a pub is the community. Seeing our pub full of families, neighbours, and friends enjoying themselves through the seasonal period reminds us why we started. It’s about bringing people together around good food and drink, within a space where people can de-stress and detach from their busy day to day life.
Q How did it feel to be placed 36th in the Top 50 Gastropubs?
OLIVIA: We were absolutely thrilled. It’s a huge honour, and for a familyowned neighbourhood pub, it means a lot to be recognised nationally. It’s a credit to our team and our guests who support us week in, week out.
Q All of the above has been happening during a tough time for the hospitality industry. How have you found things recently?
OLIVIA: It hasn’t been easy, costs are rising and the industry has faced real challenges with many places closing as they are struggling to survive. But we’ve focused on consistency, quality, and looking after our guests. The support of our community has been incredible, and that’s what keeps us going.

"At San Carlo, Christmas is an occasion to savour, a celebration of warmth and indulgent joy"
This year’s Christmas Fayre menu, available for lunch or dinner at just £59.95 per person, showcases the very best of Italian dining with a festive flourish. It’s a feast of flavour and craftsmanship – where every course feels like a small celebration in itself.
Begin with an array of antipasti designed to delight. There’s Gamberoni Luciana –king prawns sautéed in garlic, chilli, and tomato, finished with a touch of cream – or Mozzarella in Carrozza, golden-fried and perfectly crisp, served with a fragrant basil and tomato sauce. Those who love something earthy and indulgent will find Crostone Funghi e Tartufo irresistible, with truffled mushrooms and Grana Padano atop toasted Altamura bread.
For your main course, the choice is as varied as it is luxurious. Enjoy Branzino – pan-fried sea bass in lime sauce – or Tacchino con Ripieno di Castagne, tender turkey breast with chestnut stuffing and pancetta-wrapped chipolatas, capturing the essence of a classic Christmas roast with Italian flair. There’s also Suprema di Pollo Principessa with mushrooms and asparagus, Salmone Prosecco e Gamberetti served in a Prosecco and prawn sauce, or rich Tagliatelle Porcini with chestnut pasta, porcini mushrooms, and black truffle.
And for those who prefer a little indulgence, Medaglioni al Pepe – fillet steak medallions in green peppercorn sauce – offers an elegant touch of decadence, the perfect centrepiece for a festive feast. Every dish is served with seasonal vegetables and rosemary potatoes, bringing warmth, colour, and balance to the table.
Dessert is where San Carlo truly shines. The Panettone Bread & Butter Pudding with limoncello and vanilla ice cream offers comfort with a citrus twist. For chocolate lovers, the Ferrero Rocher Cake – layers of chocolate and hazelnut mousse wrapped in praline – is pure indulgence. Or perhaps the Tiramisu and Panna Cotta ai Frutti di Bosco, with their classic Italian flavours, are the perfect finale. Vegan desserts are also available, ensuring everyone can end their meal on a sweet note.

San Carlo has always been about more than food. It’s about experience – the kind of experience that makes an ordinary evening feel like an event. During the festive season, that magic multiplies.
The atmosphere is unmistakably Italian – vibrant, stylish, yet welcoming. It’s where you can enjoy a glass of fizz before dinner, linger over espresso after dessert, and feel part of something joyful from the moment you arrive. Service is as polished as it is personal, delivered with that signature San Carlo flair: attentive, generous, and always a little bit theatrical.
Whether it’s an intimate dinner for two, a lively lunch with friends, or a company celebration, San Carlo’s team knows how to make each occasion feel effortless. Every detail is considered, every guest is made to feel special, and every visit feels like a celebration.
And for those who appreciate great value as much as great taste, the Christmas Fayre menu strikes a perfect balance. At £59.95 per person, it offers refined, multi-course dining crafted from premium ingredients – an indulgent experience that still feels accessible, with something for every palate and every pocket.
What makes San Carlo unique at Christmas isn’t just the food or the festive décor – it’s the spirit. This is a family-led collection of
restaurants, founded by Chairman Carlo Distefano and led by his son, CEO Marcello Distefano. Together, they’ve built a legacy of Italian hospitality that blends authenticity with sophistication. Each restaurant reflects that ethos: a place where quality, care, and conviviality come together beautifully. It’s that mix of energy and elegance – of polished service and heartfelt warmth – that transforms a San Carlo meal into a true celebration.
Planning your celebration couldn’t be easier. Whether it’s a table for two or a larger group booking, San Carlo’s team will tailor your experience to perfection. From festive lunches to glamorous dinners, dietary requests to décor details, everything is handled with style and ease.
Gather your family, your colleagues, your oldest friends – the ones you’ve been meaning to see all year. Dress up, raise a glass, and let San Carlo take care of the rest. Because the best memories of the season are made around a table filled with laughter, warmth, and exquisite food.
This Christmas, celebrate in true Italian style. Celebrate with San Carlo – where every guest is family, every dish is a gift, and every moment is made to shine.

A star is born
West Sussex has a new player on the wine map. Abingworth Vineyard has just dropped its debut vintage: a bright, zesty Sauvignon Blanc and a pale, juicy Pinot Noir Rosé – both full of promise, personality, and year-round appeal.
The idea was born during lockdown, when Chris and Caroline Stedman decided to swap city life for a vineyard dream. In 2022, they planted over nine hectares of vines on the gently sloping fields of Champions Farm. What began as a mid-pandemic experiment has since grown into a full-blown family a air, with their four daughters pitching in on everything from design to marketing to weeding. Everyone’s involved, everyone’s muddy, everyone’s got an opinion on pruning.
And just like the family behind them, the wines are brimming with character. They’re made to celebrate joy, creativity, and life’s small pleasures – whether that’s raising a glass with friends or stealing five precious minutes of peace and quiet. Use code ABSOLUTELY10 for 10% o your order.

Knebworth House is a venue with grandeur and variety. The TudorGothic mansion is surrounded by extensive grounds and landscaped gardens, while the Lytton Barns offer a more rustic, relaxed space if you prefer something more countryside-festival or barn-chic. The contrast between the formal mansion rooms and the barns means you can mix ceremony styles: maybe the grandeur of the house for formal affairs, coupled with a relaxed reception in the barn, or vice versa.
Photography opportunities abound: the house architecture, gardens, and barns all give differing moods and lighting.
Knebworth is good if you want scale, drama, and flexible options: large guest lists, mixed indoor/outdoor ceremonies, and many backdrop choices. For couples who want something striking that guests will remember, Knebworth ticks many boxes.

The new St Albans store brings that ethos beautifully to life. Step inside and you’re greeted by Rituals’ sensorial design of warm

The store’s arrival marks a milestone for Rituals in a city known for its charming streets and historic landmarks. “We’re delighted to open our new store at The Maltings in St Albans,” says Annemarie Forsyth, Managing Director of Rituals Cosmetics UK & Ireland. “Our aim is to help people pause, relax, and enjoy everyday life. We look forward to welcoming customers and promoting mindfulness and self-care in their routines.”
Perfectly timed for the festive season, the opening coincides with the launch of Rituals’ latest additions to the Private Collection –an indulgent home-fragrance range created with some of the world’s finest perfumers. With four scent families – Fresh, Floral, Sensual and Woody – each fragrance is crafted from precious ingredients from around the globe and housed in refillable glass that look as luxurious as they smell. Brushed metals and gleaming finishes add a touch of glamour to any room.
This season’s brand new fragrances are pure olfactory poetry: Cashmere Rose blends dewy petals with vanilla and woods; Hibiscus Dream offers a luminous mix of bergamot, pear and gardenia; while Velvet Oudh and Mystic Cedar bring depth and warmth with saffron, rose and spice. Available in refined Scented Candles, Home Perfume and more, the exciting new additions follow the brand’s high-quality, long lasting fragrances they are renowned for. “With the new Private Collection, we’re bringing high perfumery into the heart of the home,” says Lot van Rij, Innovation Director at Rituals. “It’s elevated, effortless and full of intention.”

Scents can be mixed and matched to suit every space – from the freshness of White Basil in the kitchen to the warmth of Suede Vanilla in the living room. Absolutely explores the five key lighting trends Industville has picked out for the autumn/winter season

This trend embraces tactility as a form of luxury, transforming everyday lighting into artful statements. What once felt purely functional – metal, glass, wood –takes on warmth and dimension through artisanal finishes and handcrafted detailing. Pleated brass shades catch the light with a subtle shimmer, while ribbed or frosted glass diffuses illumination into soft, atmospheric glows. These surfaces invite touch as much as sight, encouraging a deeper sensory connection with the spaces we live in.
The trend pairs beautifully with today’s desire for layered interiors. Lighting is no longer a singular fixture, but a collection of textures, tones, and scales working together. Think wall sconces with hammered metal backplates, pendant clusters with etched glass, or table lamps topped with fabric-like ceramic glazes. The interplay between jewel tones and earthy hues creates a grounding yet elevated palette – sapphire blues, forest greens, or garnet reds harmonizing with walnut, oak, and stone.
Refined Textural lighting is versatile too, striking a balance between modern sophistication and cosy intimacy. Whether placed in a living room corner, above a dining table, or along a hallway, these designs soften architectural lines and enrich everyday rituals. It’s a celebration of craft, comfort, and quiet elegance – where light doesn’t just brighten a space, but also deepens its character.
Lighting is no longer a singular fixture, but a collection of tones
Simple Shaping reflects a growing appreciation for clarity and calm in design. Stripped of unnecessary detail, these pieces highlight form, proportion, and material in their purest state. The beauty lies in restraint: slim brass frames, alabaster discs, or perfectly rounded globes that radiate a quiet confidence. Instead of overwhelming a room, this lighting style creates a serene rhythm, offering a sense of balance and refinement. This trend speaks to the architecture of light itself. Linear pendants draw the eye along dining tables or kitchen islands, while sculptural floor lamps anchor corners with their statuesque presence. Wall lights with geometric silhouettes echo architectural lines, adding structure without stealing focus. The warm glow of alabaster softens sharp edges, while brushed brass or matte black finishes keep the look grounded and timeless. Simple Shaping works seamlessly across interior styles – from contemporary apartments to heritage homes –because it respects space. Its intentional simplicity allows furnishings, textures, and colour palettes to breathe, while still holding its own as a design statement. Ultimately, this is lighting as quiet poetry: functional yet artful, understated yet memorable. It proves that the simplest forms often carry the most impact, illuminating spaces with elegance and ease.

This lighting is all about statement-making presence. These are not background pieces – they command attention, shaping the atmosphere of a room as much as they illuminate it. Whether it’s a sweeping chandelier with cascading glass or a bold single pendant hovering like a piece of contemporary art, the focus is on form and drama. Larger-than-life proportions bring scale and impact, while organic silhouettes soften the edges, striking a balance between fluidity and structure.
Materiality plays a vital role here. Warm-toned glass – amber, smoke, or bronze – casts a flattering glow, transforming functional light into mood lighting. Braided cords and textured fittings add an artisanal touch, grounding even the most avant-garde designs in craft. These sculptural pieces thrive against richly saturated backdrops: think deep terracotta walls, inky blues, or velvety greens that enhance their theatrical presence.
Perfect for entertaining, Modern Sculptural lighting creates focal points over dining tables or in living spaces, sparking conversation and setting a dynamic tone. Yet it’s equally effective in creating intimacy, with softer, layered glows ideal for evenings spent at home. More than just lighting, these designs double as sculptural installations – art forms that fuse light, shadow, and shape to elevate the everyday into the extraordinary.
Delicate & Dimensional lighting is all about nuance – the subtle interplay between form, shadow, and texture. It celebrates the idea that lighting isn’t just functional, but can become a narrative thread within a space, adding layers of meaning and mood. Gentle curves, fine detailing, and imaginative silhouettes bring a sense of movement, as though the fixtures themselves are part of an unfolding story. This creates a playful yet sophisticated energy, perfect for homes that thrive on atmosphere and personality.
Layered lighting is central to the look. Think pendant lights floating like ornaments above a dining table, paired with sculptural floor lamps that wash walls with soft, dappled light. This trend truly comes alive in moments of gathering. Whether for festive entertaining or quiet evenings, Delicate & Dimensional lighting sets a stage where everyday rituals feel celebratory.
This brings together the warmth of tradition with the clean lines of modern design, creating spaces that feel grounded yet quietly elevated. At its heart is an appreciation for authenticity – natural materials such as linen, mellow stone, textured metal, and raw-edged wood are celebrated for their inherent character. Rather than disguising imperfections, this look embraces them, allowing subtle variations in grain, weave, or patina to tell a story of craft and connection.
Lighting within this trend favours simplicity of form, with unfussy silhouettes that echo the understated elegance of Japandi styling. Picture linen drum shades diffusing a gentle glow, stone bases carved into organic forms, or slender metal frames paired with wool-wrapped cords.
Layering is key to achieving the Contemporary Rustic mood. A mix of table lamps, wall sconces, and overhead pendants ensures both functionality and atmosphere, while soft palettes of chalky neutrals, earthy taupes, and muted greens provide a calming backdrop. This is rusticity reimagined for modern living – an aesthetic that blends comfort with sophistication, and simplicity with soul.

Absolutely visits The Radiator Centre in St Albans for some top tips on how to heat the home
When you’re choosing new radiators for your home, there are a number of things you need to take into consideration, including style, size, shape and what you need to use them for.
To work out what size you need for your home, start by calculating the heat output required for your room, which can be done by using an online heat calculator. The results will show an amount in either watts or BTUs (BTU stands for British Thermal Unit, which is the standard heat measurement used in the UK).
All radiators will state an output in either watts, BTUs or both. By knowing how much heat each radiator will emit, you can now find the best one to e ciently heat each room based on your earlier heat calculation.
Q Which radiator is best for which room?
A Some radiators are better suited to one room over another. In the bathroom, for instance, heated towel rails are an obvious choice. Many have dual-fuel options, meaning that when the central heating is turned o in the summer, you can continue to ensure your towels are warm and dry. In the lounge, you might want to have a radiator that’s attractive enough to be the centre of attention in its own right. If you have an awkwardly shaped hallway, consider a vertical radiator, which will make the most of the space whilst still providing a warm welcome.
Q What are the design options for your home’s radiators?
A Whether you favour traditional styles or more cutting-edge designs, you will find some beautiful options available which will make a stylish addition to

the home. Radiators are no longer just functional white boxes, many of today’s designs come in a variety of shapes and sizes, not to mention every colour of the rainbow. Indeed, with some of the latest art radiators, you’d be forgiven for not realising it was a radiator at all.
Q Electric or central heating?
A Choosing between plumbed and electric radiators depends on your specific needs, existing infrastructure and preferences for control and energy e ciency.
Sometimes it is not possible to plumb in a radiator due to the cost of laying new pipe work or getting gas to a new boiler. Having electric radiators might prove to be a sensible alternative.
The key consideration when choosing an electric radiator should be its controllability, as this will ultimately be the thing that determines how e cient you can make it run. Having 24/7 timers allows you to set precise on/o times so you have the heat just when you need it. Most electric radiators will come with an override button if you should then need to turn them on outside the usual schedule. Many will also come with apps that allow you to see what is working in real time.

Plumbed radiators, on the other hand, can be more energy-efficient, especially when connected to a modern, energyefficient boiler or heat pump. They spread heat evenly and are well-suited to larger homes. Typically controlled via a central thermostat, this allows for the regulation of temperature across multiple radiators in the home, which may also be done via an app with the correct set up. Although the initial installation may be higher, running costs can be lower, especially with a wellmaintained boiler or heat pump, leading to savings over time. Many homeowners also prefer the look of plumbed radiators, especially in older homes where they match the traditional style.
Q What are the sustainability considerations?
A Sustainability is a huge factor for everyone and in the heating sector there are some great energy-efficient designs that are now on the market, with more being introduced all the time. One of the recent models, the Soho, features a remarkable water saving of approximately 80% less than a traditional tubular multi-column radiator. When you have less water in the system it means less energy is required to heat it up, saving on cost as well as energy consumption.

By SHARON SCHANSCHIEFF
Understanding what it means to be strong and powerful in today’s digital world can be interpreted in many different ways. For young people, such terms are often associated with dominance or having a physical strength or power. There is also heavy emphasis placed on the visual aspect of looking ‘strong’ or fit. Social media has also given rise to the more visual and misogynistic behaviours around what it means to be strong. Yet strength and power is about so much more. It is about embracing resilience
and self-awareness in a world filled with complex challenges and distractions. Having strength involves having the courage to stand up for one’s beliefs and others and recognising the value of kindness and empathy. Strength is not solely about physical ability, but also about emotional intelligence and a willingness to learn from failures. Surely the most powerful individuals are those who use their voice to inspire change and contribute positively to their community? With that in mind, it is vital that schools nurture young people to recognise that true power comes from collaboration and support, rather than from dominance.

In the classroom, having power is about the ability to influence your peers positively, to share opinions confidently and to stand up for one’s values in a tolerant and respectful way if challenged. Strength, however, is more about building resilience than muscle; it’s about being able to adapt to change, deal with criticism, manage peer disagreements or conflicts and, perhaps most importantly, to do it with compassion. Ironically, resilience has been a buzzword in schools for the last ten years, yet most schools and future employers are finding

that young people are not resilient. Many fear failure. They struggle with their mental health, and most do not understand the cold hard truth of what it means to be truly resilient. Fearing failure is a big issue for young people today. It is something that we, as a school, have delivered assemblies on time and again to ensure we reinforce the importance of learning from mistakes. Today we teach young people that failure is a good thing, making a mistake fuels learning.
Life is challenging for teenagers today and that hasn’t been helped by the immediacy of our digital-driven world and the mixed messages around what is real and what is fake that often stem from social media. As such, there is great pressure and even an expectation from young people to succeed in many aspects of life. For instance, a student might struggle to accept the news that they were not selected for a school production – perhaps they auditioned for a principal role and were only selected for the ensemble. Where this can become complicated is the way in which they respond to this news. A negative response would be refusal to participate in the production altogether. A positive response that demonstrates both mental resilience and inner-core strength would be to congratulate their successful peers and channel any
disappointment into not giving up at the first hurdle and trying again next year. Building that resilience and accepting that sometimes things don’t go the way you had hoped is an important skill to master for young people and one that can be supported at home by parents. It is important that parents also model the right behaviours at home and encourage their children to keep going, to accept that although things didn’t work out this time, it doesn’t mean they won’t in the future. Hard work and perseverance is the name of the game. We need to be having more conversations with children at home and to ensure that messaging between school and home is consistent. Social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram do little to support young people by creating feelings of selfdoubt around achievement, appearance and strength. Often these platforms exacerbate feelings of inadequacy. For young people, strength can be interpreted or visualised as being about ‘hardness’, physical power and control. They don’t teach children about healthy relationships or about what it means to have true strength and power because what they see on social media is taken at face value. If we can teach young people to understand that being powerful is about developing a strong, healthy body and mind and about how you behave as a person, we can help them to feel safe and supported.
It is vital that we are teaching young people about moral fibre and what that means in the real world. There is no such thing as perfection. Instead, we need to be listening to others, being more empathetic, working as a cohesive team – that is where true power stems from. It is our role as schools to facilitate those discussions and to ensure our students feel safe in their own skin. Strength and power isn’t about who has the loudest voice, the highest grades or the most followers. It is compassion, kindness and empathy that will always win true.

Supplementing your child's education at Cresconova Labs
In the heart of the capital, Cresconova Labs is transforming what supplemental education can look like. It is not tutoring, nor standard enrichment – it is an environment where children discover the joy of creating, experimenting, and bringing ideas to life.
As Artificial Intelligence and other technologies reshape our world, the qualities that matter most – creativity, imagination, collaboration, and resilience – become even more powerful when paired with the right tools. At Cresconova Labs, advanced technologies are not ends in themselves, but catalysts, helping children turn ideas into reality through hands-on, collaborative projects that spark curiosity, build confidence, and nurture future innovators. Picture a group of children huddled together designing capsules and determined

to keep their “egg-stronaut” safe. They measure angles, calculate force, test materials, and debate design choices, all while racing against the clock to refine their capsules. At launch, the staircase becomes their proving ground. Some eggs land intact, others not, but each outcome sparks laughter, fresh hypotheses, and another round of iteration. What seems like play is actually deep learning in action – strengthened by resilience, teamwork, and inventive thinking.
In another room, students are just as intensely focused, turning fabric remnants into haute couture, more than just an accessory – designed with precision, crafted with a focus on texture and form, creating a one-of-a-kind piece focused on environmental responsibility. Students explore history through textiles, apply geometry in pattern-making, and express individuality through colour and form. The session ends with a joyful runway moment, but beneath the fashion design lies critical thinking, imagination, and a consciousness of sustainability.
From rockets to runways, every activity at Cresconova Labs reflects a multidisciplinary
approach, showing children that true innovation lives at the intersections. The tools – resin printers, laser cutters, robotics, AR/VR – are just the beginning; the true outcome is mastery, when knowledge across disciplines converges into creativity.
“At Cresconova Labs, creativity is not the opposite of rigor; it is the highest form of it, preparing children not just to consume technology but to create it,” says Christine Braun, Cresconova’s Chief Creative Officer, formerly Director of REEF Makerspace, Harvard University.
While children are immersed in these experiences, parents are not forgotten. A calm, light-filled lounge offers coffee, curated books, and work-friendly spaces. For many, it becomes a mini-retreat, a welcome pause before the rhythm of family life resumes.
Cresconova Labs’ vision is clear: to offer the community something truly new – an experience where curiosity meets creativity, where children build resilience and imagination, and where tomorrow’s innovators begin their journey.
