ABSOLUTELY’S May issue highlights
Thirteen. Unlucky for some, but that's the number of years I have been married to my wonderful wife (comedians of yesteryear would probably say something disparaging, but I won't sink to those levels). Despite being 13 years ago, it's amazing the number of times our wedding comes up when meeting friends and family.
There was the photo booth, one of the first things that we decided to spend money on and I am so happy we did. Not too long ago I was at a friend's house for dinner and I noticed on the wall a picture from the booth of him and his wife pulling the most ridiculous faces. That made me smile a lot. There was my gag of buying my father a huge top hat, which linked to the importance in the family (although as my cousin pointed out at the time, I should have got a very small one). That top hat is on show at my parents' home. People always bring up the fact that my wife was an hour late, as she was waiting for her hairdresser to battle through traffic. Not one of the highlights for me. But it just goes to show how important your big day is, so you need to make sure everything is in place for matters to go smoothly. Here's hoping our weddings special will be the start of you making your own wonderful memories.

Absolutely celebrates the joy of weddings later in this issue, but things don’t always run smoothly in life, as Tash Gershfield and Carly Harris are only too aware of
Co-hosts of Not As We Planned – Hertfordshire’s Tash Gershfield and Essex-based Carly Harris – started their podcast in 2023 after the breakdown of their relationships. Since then, the podcast has grown at a rapid pace and now sits at approximately 40,000 monthly listeners. They have recently hosted their first live event and have successfully released their very own planner aimed to help others with their own healing journey. They spill the tea on life after divorce, while giving a big high-five to singlehood and dating into your 30s. They’re building a tribe of fierce, uplifting women who stand tall against whatever curveballs life throws their way. With heart and humour, they dive deep into the messy, magical moments of motherhood, sharing real stories that resonate. From tackling sizzling topics to smashing taboos,
they’re all about raising awareness and empowering women everywhere – and Absolutely met the two to find out more.
Q When did the two of you meet and what were your first impressions of the other?
A Carly: We both followed each other on Instagram for a few years but had never met. We shared similar content and engaged on each other’s pages. Tash then announced she was going through a separation and shared her divorce journey with her followers. Less than a year later, I reached out to Tash as I was about to go through the same journey and wanted advice. Tash: I was in the process of trying to launch a podcast, but felt like something was missing. Carly ended up being that missing piece, and we filmed our first episode together after only having met once beforehand to discuss the podcast. From the moment we met, it felt like we had been friends for years, and we just clicked.
Q Why do you think you hit it o ?
A Carly: We think we are very similar with our beliefs, morals, and values. Our goals aligned, and we felt like we clicked instantly, which made everything feel really natural.
Q When was the subject of a possible podcast first broached between you?
A Tash: I asked Carly if she wanted to do a podcast with me, shortly after she told me about her separation. I didn’t want to be insensitive, but I saw an opportunity, so thought I would ask – and luckily she grabbed it with both hands!
Q Why did you think you had something to say?
A Carly: We were both going through such heartache and changes in our family dynamics. We felt a strong need to share our journeys on our own platforms and together, so people wouldn’t feel shame or guilt for going through a divorce. We wanted to make
sure people didn’t feel alone and create a safe space for those who could relate.
Q What was your personal situation like when you launched it? I believe you are both mothers?
A Tash: Yes, we’re both mums to young children, navigating becoming single parents, managing a coparenting relationship, and trying to heal from the breakup.
Q How did the first podcast go and what did you cover on it?
A Carly: It went straight to number one on the Apple Family and Kids charts, and we couldn’t believe it! We talked about realising our relationships were over and shared details about our own personal experiences with our breakups. I think a lot of people could relate to our situation – we’ve all been through heartbreak at one time or another haven't we? Tash: We were blown away by the response to be honest. We went straight to number one and have stayed in the top five ever since we launched.
Q How do you go about planning a new episode?
A Carly: The majority of our content shares similar aspects, so there isn’t one particular topic that stands out as more popular than another. But we do cover a lot of breakup emails, dating dilemmas, and provide a lot of advice to those who want to do the work and heal.
“One minute we will have you crying, then laughing”
Q Of the subjects you’ve covered, which ones stand out for you and why?
A Tash: Our episodes can really vary at times. One minute we will have you crying and the next laughing! Our episodes share people’s stories and we give feedback and advice. Our dating episodes have always been a laugh to film and we’ve shared some wild horror stories! We love that our content gives people hope and doesn’t make them feel so alone.
Q How did the first live event come about? What did you cover in the event, and how do you feel it went?
A Carly: We did a live podcast where the audience could get involved and ask questions. It was a chance for like-minded independent women to meet one another, and it went really well! We’re definitely going to be planning more for this year. Tash: We felt like we didn’t just grow an audience; we formed a supportive community of women. We wanted to help them meet other inspiring women in the same position, so our first event was solely for single mums, and it was such a success.
Q Is there a tour to come?
A Tash: Yes, we’re planning for 2026. Watch this space!
Q What is the thinking behind The Healing Journal?
A Carly: Our healing journal was created after we both worked through our divorces and realised we could help others do the
same. We wanted to encourage people to do the work on themselves. Sometimes, people are willing to do the work but aren’t sure how. So, we saw an opportunity to help with this. We’d always been asked what people could do to help their friends going through heartbreak, and now we can point them to this journal.
Q Do you have plenty of other ambitions for Not As We Planned?
A Tash: We’ve barely scratched the surface… big, big plans are in the works!
Q When you are not busy with the podcast, where do you love to head to in your respective areas?
A Carly: I love living in the countryside and enjoy beautiful walks with great views. My favourite spots are Hatfield Forest, The Lion and Lamb Pub, and Lakeside. Tash: I’ve grown up in Hertfordshire and love being surrounded by family and friends and love raising my children where I grew up. My favourite spots have to be Verulamium Park, The Grove, and Brent Cross Shopping Centre.
Q How optimistic are you about the future?
A Carly: We’re massively optimistic about the future of the podcast and where we see it going! We really feel like this is just the beginning for us.

There’s something quietly magical about the Algarve in the o -season. When the golden summer crowds begin to thin and the pace softens, a di erent side of Portugal’s southern coast reveals itself. It’s a time of year locals quietly cherish, and seasoned travellers seek out the so-called Secret Season, when the days are still bathed in sunlight, the beaches are beautifully empty, and the rhythm of life slows to something altogether more indulgent. For those in the know, there is no better base from which to enjoy this more serene side of the Algarve than Four Seasons Fairways, a luxurious retreat nestled in the heart of Quinta do Lago.
O -season travel in the Algarve is an insider’s secret. The summer heat mellows to a gentle warmth, perfect for al fresco lunches, early evening strolls, and long, peaceful days spent outdoors. It’s also a time when the luxury of space and stillness becomes part of the appeal. You can wander along empty stretches of beach, book a table at even the most in-demand restaurants with ease, or tee o at Quinta do Lago’s worldclass golf courses without a wait in sight.
Four Seasons Fairways makes the most of this season of calm. The resort’s unique blend of villa-style accommodation with the convenience and service of a boutique hotel o ers guests the best of both worlds. Each villa or apartment is impeccably designed, spacious and private, complete with either a private pool or Jacuzzi, outdoor dining area and fully equipped kitchen.
Despite the space and privacy, you’re never far from luxurious touches and thoughtful service. The resort’s wellness centre is a peaceful haven for rest and rejuvenation, with an indoor heated pool, sauna, steam room, and treatment rooms o ering everything from massages to facials. For those who like to stay active, the gym is well equipped and hosts regular classes.
Food is central to the Four Seasons Fairways experience, and the quieter seasons o er even more opportunity to indulge. At VIVO, guests can ease into the day with fresh juices, excellent co ee, and breakfast dishes that make the most of seasonal ingredients. Come evening, Amara o ers a more refined a air. With panoramic views and a menu that celebrates modern Portuguese cuisine, dining here feels elegant yet relaxed, especially when paired with a bottle of local wine and the glow
of a Quinta do Lago sunset. Beyond the resort, o -season dining takes on a wonderfully languid rhythm. Long, wine-soaked lunches at places like 2 Passos perched overlooking the ocean, are practically a requirement. The service is unhurried, the views uninterrupted, and the freshly caught seafood, grilled to perfection.
The o -season is also ideal for exploring. Golf, of course, remains a major draw with Quinta do Lago’s courses world-renowned, and the fairways are just that little bit greener when you’re not playing in 30-degree heat. The same is true for tennis, padel, or even a gentle cycle along the wooden boardwalks that hug the Ria Formosa. For walkers, the nearby trails winding through pine forests and along the coast are quiet and wild, alive with the colours of nature and the sounds of migrating birds. You might spot flamingos or simply enjoy the salty breeze as you stroll along the sand dunes. For those craving a little adventure or culture, there are treasures to be discovered nearby. The cobbled streets and whitewashed buildings of Faro’s old town are perfect for a slow afternoon of exploring, while a boat trip to Estaminé – a restaurant set on a secluded island in the Ria Formosa – is a must. With its barefoot charm and unbeatable views, it’s
the kind of place that makes you feel as though you’ve stumbled upon a well-kept secret.
And perhaps that’s the real beauty of the Secret Season. At Four Seasons Fairways, everything is designed to let you settle in, slow down, and savour it all. Whether you’re curled up on a terrace with a book, sitting down to a long dinner at Amara, or watching the sun dip beneath the Atlantic after a day spent out in nature, it’s the kind of experience that lingers long after you’ve left.
As the rest of the world rushes on, there’s something quietly wonderful about choosing to pause. And in Quinta do Lago, at Four Seasons Fairways, the Secret Season might just be the most beautiful time of all.

San Carlo Restaurants has etched its name into the annals of the UK dining scene as a symbol of Italian culinary excellence. Established in 1992, the brand has enjoyed a trajectory marked by growth, innovation, and a steadfast commitment to authentic Italian cuisine. From its humble beginnings to becoming a beloved institution, the history of San Carlo Restaurants is a story of passion, perseverance, and a dedication to flavour.
The journey of San Carlo begins with its founder, Carlo Distefano. Originally from Sicily, Distefano brought with him a deep appreciation for Italian culinary traditions. The first San Carlo restaurant opened in the heart of Birmingham, a city that was, and still is, a melting pot of cultures. It quickly became known for its vibrant atmosphere and authentic dishes, setting the standard for Italian dining in the UK. Distefano’s vision was clear: to provide diners with not just food, but an experience that celebrated the richness
of Italian culture. With a keen focus on fresh ingredients and traditional recipes, the first San Carlo restaurant laid the groundwork for a brand that would soon expand beyond Birmingham.
The success of the original San Carlo restaurant led to a remarkable expansion. In the late 1990s, the brand began to grow, with new locations opening not just in Birmingham, but in other major cities across the UK. By prioritising quality and consistency, each new establishment upheld the standards set by the original restaurant.
The San Carlo experience goes beyond just food; it encompasses ambiance and service. The restaurants are designed to reflect the warmth of Italian hospitality, creating a space where guests feel welcome and valued. This commitment to excellence resonated with diners, leading to a loyal customer base that continued to grow.
As the San Carlo brand solidified its presence in the UK, it garnered numerous accolades that underscored its reputation as a leader in the industry. The restaurant group received various awards for its exceptional food quality and innovative dining experiences. This recognition helped to elevate the status of San Carlo Restaurants, making them a preferred choice for locals and tourists alike.
One of the hallmarks of San Carlo Restaurants is its ability to adapt while
staying true to its roots. The menu has evolved over the years to include a range of dishes that reflect both traditional Italian cuisine and modern culinary trends. Seasonal ingredients are a focal point, ensuring that the menu remains fresh and exciting. Signature dishes such as wood-fired pizzas, handmade pasta, and fine seafood o er guests an authentic taste of Italy.
As of 2025, San Carlo Restaurants continue to thrive, with several locations operating across London, Manchester, and beyond. The brand’s commitment to authenticity and quality, combined with its innovative approach to Italian cuisine, has ensured its place in the competitive landscape of the UK dining scene. Looking forward, the future appears promising – with plans for continued expansion and a focus on sustainability and community engagement, the company is poised to remain a staple of Italian dining in the UK. The journey
that began in Birmingham in 1992 has transformed into a rich history of passion, flavour, and an unwavering commitment to providing an unparalleled dining experience. San Carlo Restaurants stand not just as eateries, but as ambassadors of Italian culinary culture, reminding us that food is much more than sustenance – it’s a celebration of life.

Martin Nisbet, landlord of the Bushel and Strike in Ashwell, on what enticed him and his family back into the hotseat
Q Why did you originally take over the Bushel and Strike and what do you feel you achieved in that first stint?
A Coming to the Bushel and Strike for the first time was very much based around the necessity to work. Lucy, my partner, and I, along with our then two and a halfyear-old daughter, were at a crossroads with our careers and had been looking at options of having our own business. The opportunity to take on the Bushel presented itself and with Lucy having family in the village already, we both felt this had the possibility of making it work for all of us as well as giving us ready made babysitters!
During our first spell at the pub we worked incredibly hard at creating a pub for the local community. We became known for our hospitality and good food, but more than that, a safe and comfortable space
where everyone was welcome. We were very proud to have created a pub that was most fitting for a beautiful village like Ashwell.
Q Why did you decide to move on to pastures new?
A We had reached the end of our tenancy and had agreed to stay on until the brewery found new tenants. The decision to leave was really a very di cult one, and in hindsight (which is of course a wonderful thing) we should never have left. We had burned out. We worked six days a week for nearly four years with less than two weeks holiday in that time. We were doing everything for everyone else and not looking after ourselves and believed that the answer lay elsewhere. The grass is greener I think they say. The real issues were more to do with us rather than location. What was important to us is that we left in the
best possible way. We had now bought the house next to the pub and were going to be villagers. We loved Ashwell and wanted to bring our daughter up here. We thought we could manage to do that in an environment that was not so demanding of our time. As I said, hindsight is a wonderful thing.
Q What has enticed you back – and do you have di erent ambitions now compared to your first stint?
A The problem with living in the house next door to the pub you used to run was that you are always aware of how well it is doing. In the seven years we were away there had been three di erent tenants. During the last tenant’s reign it really wasn’t in the best of conditions. The pub had gone from being this central hub for the locals to almost nothing. They were only open limited days in the week, did not serve any food for an entire year and created nothing to entice you in. Food and drink is important, but what is really important is how we make people feel. It had become sad and depressing with quite often no one actually in there. Whenever Lucy and I were out and about we were always being told the village missed us and repeatedly asked would we ever come back. So after a few years of opening a restaurant, closing a restaurant, dealing with COVID, death of a parent and being good employees for other people, the opportunity came along to take the Bushel on again. It was always an easy decision for myself. This is a great pub in a great village with an amazing community. The pub deserved to be open and the village deserved it too. This time is very di erent than before, we are villagers running a village pub and that personal connection to the pub is far greater than it was the first time. It is so important to me that we are open, serving food and just being as consistent as we can. Since returning the support has been overwhelming, really beautiful in so many ways, and this just cements that the crazy idea of going back to somewhere we had been before was the absolute best decision for everyone.

Newcomer Beaulieu 58 Wines isn’t playing it safe. Their debut collection challenges expectations with still wines crafted from grapes you wouldn’t normally find in an English vineyard — think Gewürztraminer, Shiraz, and Cabernet Franc! From an aromatic, oak-aged white to a bold, full-bodied red these wines are anything but ordinary. b58winery.com
The masters of English aromatic still wine
La Gioiosa, one of Italy’s biggest names in fizz, has gone portable with its latest launch – crisp, refreshing Prosecco and Italian Sparkling Rosé in cans. Same signature bubbles, now in a chic, single-serve format. Whether it’s a picnic, a park hang, or just a no-fuss Friday night, these pocket-sized pours are ready when you are. Available now at Waitrose. lagioiosa.co.uk
Tucked away in the South Downs near Pulborough, West Sussex, Stopham specialises in aromatic still wines, crafting some of the country’s finest Pinot Gris, Bacchus, and Pinot Blanc. And they’ve got the silverware to prove it, racking up awards from WineGB and the Independent English Wine Awards like it’s no big deal.
Founded in 2007 by Simon Woodhead, a former McLaren F1 engineer, Stopham takes the same precision and craft that goes into fine-tuning race cars and applies it to winemaking. But don’t mistake precision for over-engineering - they are all about guiding the grapes, not micromanaging them. From meticulously managed vineyards to minimal-intervention techniques in the winery, their approach lets the fruit do the talking, resulting in vibrant, aromatic wines with crisp acidity and layers of delicate complexity that rank among England’s finest still wines.
Sustainability is at the heart of the operation, too, and if you fancy a closer look, their vineyard tours and tastings o er the perfect excuse to sip awardwinning wine while soaking in the Sussex countryside.

Hertfordshire-raised April Banbury on Married at First Sight UK and launching her own bridal collection
If anyone knows weddings, it’s April Banbury. The fashion designer is a former beauty queen and is perhaps best known for her appearance on the reality TV show Married at First Sight UK (MAFS UK), and a lot has happened in the last five years. Hertfordshire-raised, April comes from a background that helped nurture her artistic flair. She trained in fashion at The Arts Institute of Bournemouth, and with a natural eye for detail and elegance, she developed a personal brand that reflects glamour, femininity, and sophistication. Her early career saw her designing bespoke dresses, particularly for special occasions such as weddings and pageants. This niche helped her carve out a name for herself in the competitive UK fashion scene. April gained widespread public attention when she was crowned Ms Great Britain in 2020. This achievement significantly raised her profile, positioning her as both a style influencer and a public figure. Her success in pageantry not only celebrated her poise and charisma, but also opened doors to greater opportunities in the fashion
and entertainment industries. In 2022, April joined the cast of Married at First Sight UK, the popular reality dating series where strangers are paired by experts and meet for the first time at the altar, and many viewers connected with her honesty and resilience. During this period of time, April has continued to work in fashion, promoting her own designs and o ering services as a bridalwear designer. Her collections feature carefully curated silhouettes, intricate detailing, and high-quality fabrics, ensuring that every bride can find a gown that reflects her personality and vision. Whether inspired by delicate lace, sleek minimalism, or vintage glamour, April’s designs celebrate the beauty and individuality of every bride. Absolutely sat down with April to chat about a career that has been anything but dull.
Q Were you always creative, even as a child?
A Yes, I’ve always been a very creative person. As a child, I was constantly drawing, designing, and making things. I loved anything artistic, whether it was sketching fashion ideas, just drawing in general, or making clothes for my life sized Barbie from whatever I could get my hands on. Creativity has always been a huge part of who I am.
Q Did you grow up in Hertfordshire?
A Yes, I grew up in Hertfordshire, and it holds such a special place in my heart. It was a wonderful place to spend my childhood, with a great mix of countryside and city life. I loved the sense of community, the beautiful surroundings, and how accessible everything is. It’s close to London, but still has that peaceful, countryside feel. It was a great place for my creativity and inspiration.
Q As you progressed through education, did you have an inkling of what you would go on to do, or has your career evolved quite organically?
A I always knew I wanted to do something in fashion design. My career has evolved very organically, and I found my love for bridal, evening gowns and costumes. I’ve followed my passions and taken opportunities as they’ve come. Looking back, every step has led me to where I am today.
Q What encouraged you to take part in Ms Great Britain?
A I wanted to challenge myself and step outside of my comfort zone, as I was very shy as a child. Pageants have definitely helped shape who I am today. I also loved the idea of using the platform to promote confidence, empowerment, and important causes close to my heart.
“There is something magical about creating a dress ”
Q How did it feel to win it?
A It was an incredible moment, so surreal, exciting, and emotional all at once! Winning Ms Great Britain was a huge honour, and I was so proud to represent the title and will be forever.
Q Did it change your life in any way?
A Absolutely! It gave me so many amazing opportunities, introduced me to inspiring people, and opened doors in both my personal and professional life. It also gave me a platform to raise awareness about important issues, which I’m really passionate about.
Q How do you reflect on your time on Married at First Sight UK?
A It was definitely a unique and intense experience! There were highs
and lows, but I’ve always believed in taking something positive from every situation. It taught me a lot about myself, and I’m grateful for the lessons I learned along the way.
Q You have used your profile in the public eye to raise awareness of health – both physical and mental. Why were you keen to do this?
A I know first-hand how important both physical and mental well-being are. I’ve faced my own challenges, and I want to use my platform to help others feel less alone, encourage open conversations, and promote self-care. Mental and physical health go hand in hand, and I think it’s so important to prioritize them.
Q When did you start to specialise in bridal?
A Bridalwear has always fascinated me, it’s such a special part of someone’s life. I gradually found myself drawn more and more to designing bridal gowns, and it felt like a natural transition from being a bridal stylist for 10 years to now launching my very first collection this year. There is something magical about creating a dress that makes someone feel their absolute best on their wedding day.
Q When did you launch your own business, and what did you want to o er from day one?
A I did a soft launch in January, and now my collection is being launched at Bridal Week Harrogate, which I am extremely excited about. I am so proud of the collection. I launched my business to o er handcrafted bridalwear that truly reflects each bride. My mission is to make every bride feel extraordinary on her special day and to help brides find the perfect dress, one that feels just as magical as the moment they say, “I do.”

Working with women one-to-one through Gaia Grace Personal Training has allowed me to witness first-hand the transformative power of personalised movement coaching through mat and reformer Pilates. Each session is carefully crafted to meet individual needs, taking into account not just physical goals, but also energy levels, stress management, and overall wellbeing. By incorporating understanding of hormonal cycles into our training approach, we’re able to work with the body’s natural rhythms rather than against them, leading to more sustainable and enjoyable fitness journeys.
By EMMA CHASE
When I embarked on my wellness journey, launching Gaia Grace Pilates, I never imagined how profoundly it would shape not just my life, but the lives of countless women in our community. What began as a personal transformation after becoming a mother of two has blossomed into something far greater than I anticipated. Starting with just two classes per week, Gaia Grace rapidly grew driven by an incredible community of women seeking strength, connection, and joy through movement. Our dynamic, upbeat approach to Pilates has resonated deeply, earning
recognition as a finalist in the 2024 Enfield Business Awards and nominations for Best New Business and Best Health and Fitness. But this was just the beginning. As I deepened my understanding of women’s wellness and our unique needs, I recognised a greater calling. This recognition has led to founding Tribe22 with my incredible business partners. Tribe22 is an innovative platform set to revolutionise how women approach not only their health and fitness journey, but every aspect of their daily wellbeing practice and approach to self-care. Through our online and in-person events, workshops, and social media community, we’re building a supportive sisterhood where women can share, learn, and grow together on their wellbeing journeys.
This deep, personalised approach to training has shown me time and again that when women are supported in understanding their bodies and given the tools to work with their natural cycles, they achieve not just better physical results, but also greater confidence and connection with themselves.
Gaia Grace and Tribe22 represent everything I’m passionate about – empowering women through understanding their bodies, particularly how our natural cycles influence our energy, strength, and overall wellbeing. I thrive on taking an individual and bespoke approach to every client and I look forward to training you and being part of your wellbeing journey no matter what stage of your life and cycle you are in.

Absolutely finds out more about Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen’s colourful partnership with Shutterly Fabulous Harpenden
From big, bright colours to soft, neutral hues, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen’s new shutter colour collection in collaboration with Shutterly Fabulous has something suited to every home. Here, Laurence discusses the ins and outs of this new collection, from the chosen colour palette through to the impact shutters have in the home.
Q What inspired the colour palette in this new shutter collection with Shutterly Fabulous?
A I draw a lot of inspiration from fashion, art and nature. Think of the rich jewel tones found in vintage couture and the deep, moody hues of an evening sky. I wanted to give people the confidence to embrace colour. This collection features deep greens
such as Gordons, fiery reds such as Cinnabar, and velvety midnight blues such as Marine, alongside the softer, dusky pink of Satin and warm, inviting neutrals of Linen and Rice White. It’s all about creating drama, depth and personality in a space and each colour tells a story and brings character to the home.
Q Have any current interior design trends influenced your choices, and if so, how?
A Absolutely! We’re seeing a huge movement towards warm yet bold palettes and deep, cocooning shades, both of which have influenced our choices. There’s also a growing desire for personalised interiors, so we wanted to o er colours which will allow homeowners to express their style – whether that’s through more of a daring statement or a subtle, classic tone.
“THE BEAUTY OF SHUTTERS IS THEIR TIMELESS APPEAL, AND OUR COLOUR PALETTE WORKS ACROSS VARYING ERAS AND AESTHETICS”
Q How do you ensure the chosen colours complement a variety of architectural styles?
A The beauty of shutters is their timeless appeal, so I made sure our colour palette worked across varying eras and aesthetics with complete ease. Linen and Rice White are perfect for traditional and contemporary homes alike, o ering warmth without feeling too stark. The mouth-watering Gordons and scene-setting Chestnut bring depth to period properties, whilst the rich and naughty Cinnabar feels fresh and contemporary in eclectic and playful spaces.
Q What do you think shutters add to a space?
A So much more than people realise! Shutters aren’t just about keeping the outside world out, they’re about making the inside world as fabulous as possible. The colours in this collection have been carefully curated to either make an eye-catching statement or to complement the existing interiors. For example, deep blue shutters, such as Marine, can add sophistication to a loft space, whilst soft blush shutters, such as Satin, can bring warmth to a nursery. They’re a game-changer in terms of aesthetics, privacy and light control.
Q Which new colour is your favourite and why?
A That’s like asking me to pick a favourite child! But if I must, I’d say Gordons – a deep, velvety green that feels luxurious,
grounding and daring, all rolled into one! It’s one of those magical shades which adapts to its surroundings by appearing rich and moody in dim lighting yet fresh and vibrant in daylight. It looks absolutely stunning when paired with warm woods and brass accents and is as mouth-watering as a bottle of gin! A very close-second would be my Cinnabar shutter. Finding the right red can be tricky, but having used all of my knowledge and experience, I have created a red which is rich, nourishing and just naughty enough to bring a room to life.
Q How would you convince someone who is nervous of colour to experiment with bolder hues?
A Start small! If a full wall of colour feels daunting, shutters are the perfect way to introduce it without overwhelming the space. Also think of colour as an accent rather than an overhaul. Blues are a wonderful choice for introducing colour slowly into design schemes, with the Marine colourway adding sophistication and versatility to the mix. Satin is also the perfect pink for experimenting with, as it’s not too warm or too cool, neither is it too girly or too dolly; it’s an elegant, sophisticated and extraordinarily gorgeous hue.
Q You’re well known for your love of bright colours, so why have you included the neutral options, Rice White and Linen, in this collection?
A Neutrals are the perfect backdrop for layers of colour. Rice White and Linen are
warm and inviting, and work beautifully with both bold and muted tones. They also provide a classic, elegant look for those who prefer a more understated approach. Fabulous design to me is about contrast and balance, and these shades anchor the collection beautifully.
Q What have you enjoyed most about collaborating with Shutterly Fabulous?
A Seeing how colour can transform a space in such a structural way has been a dream! Shutters are such a timeless feature and working with Shutterly Fabulous to infuse them with fresh, exciting new colours has been incredible. I love that this collection o ers something for every personality – whether you crave subtle elegance or bold drama.

There are lots of ways of working with porcelain, but piping is one of the more unusual ones. Award-winning Australian ceramic artist Ebony Russell is known for her unconventional approach, which involves methodically piping porcelain in intricate layers to construct elaborate, freestanding forms.
Ebony’s first ever showcase in the UK is an in-store exhibition at wonderful conceptual London boutique Koibird. This unusual collection of ceramic pieces introduces an exciting fusion of art and retail. Known for her gravity-defying sculptural works, Ebony has created a limited-edition collection of 17 unique pieces, exclusive to the store.
Her work redefines traditional craftsmanship by erasing the boundaries between structure and decoration, celebrating excess, femininity, and the politics of purity with uninhibited delight. Through her practice, Ebony challenges longstanding perceptions of gendered aesthetics, showcasing the beauty and complexity of historically feminine-coded artistic techniques. Belma Gaudio, founder of Koibird, is a fan of Ebony’s creations. She says:
“Ebony’s work is so unique and exciting, and celebrates excess, delight and femininity in a way that fully speaks to the Koibird ethos. Prepare to be absolutely delighted with this feast for the eyes and the home!”
“TRANSFORMING
Ebony’s collection unfolds across three primary narratives, each exploring excess, craftsmanship, and transformation through her signature piped porcelain technique. Suspiciously Beautiful merges fantasy and fragility, with porcelain piped into intricate, confectionery-like forms. Standout pieces include Fangs Out, with sharp, fang-like protrusions, and Lime Lattice, a vibrant play of color and craft.
Rococo Delight reimagines 18th-century grandeur, transforming wedding cake
aesthetics into ceramic art. The extravagant Poke Pot embodies the indulgence of Rococo design. The Siren Collection draws from mythology, evoking oceanic movement and allure.
The Six-Spouted Candle Holder, inspired by ancient artefacts, turns a functional object into sculptural treasure.
Two additional works expand the collection’s scope. Glaucous Urn, inspired by Greek mythology, features a perforated porcelain surface symbolizing magic
and transformation. Piped Columns reimagine classical architecture, balancing fragility and strength.
“Collaborating with Koibird has been an exhilarating experience.
Belma Gaudio’s fearless approach to showcasing the unexpected has created a platform where creativity thrives,” says Ebony.
The collection is available to purchase in-store; prices start at £950. koibird.com

PSHEE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education) plays a pivotal role in the development of students, preparing them for the challenges of today and equipping them with the skills necessary to make sensible decisions, while living safe and fulfilling lives. When we teach PSHEE lessons, the focus is always on lifelong learning. As such, the skills we teach are not just for today, they are designed to support students throughout their lives as they navigate their role in society beyond the classroom. Therefore, it is important that any PSHEE sessions are reflective of the di erent stages of a student’s life while ensuring that we, as schools, deliver ageappropriate guidance on important issues. A lack of trained teachers or suitable resources means the delivery of PSHEE lessons can be daunting for some schools. Developing a bespoke PSHEE curriculum tailored to the needs of our students, with adaptable sessions that consider the issues a ecting them at specific times, has helped to overcome this. Likewise, giving students the opportunity to make their
own suggestions to improve the relevance of the curriculum has also been beneficial. PSHEE, especially Relationship and Sex Education (RSE), has received some negative press and, in some schools, there has been resistance from parents. Being open to feedback and helping parents to engage with the PSHEE curriculum reduces this tension. It is possible with the input of parents, sta and students to create a curriculum that is well-balanced when it comes to inclusivity and embracing perspectives around di erent faiths. Most importantly, schools should look to maintain a student-centred curriculum, where individual needs are met.
Developing strong social skills is another big area for PSHEE. Whether that is learning to work e ectively as a team while also learning about tolerance, conflict resolution and the importance of open conversations, it prepares students to form healthy relationships and fosters respect and empathy for others. Experiencing success within group projects and activities also reinforces capabilities, instilling a belief in our young people around their own potential outside of the
classroom. In addition to weekly PSHEE lessons, our students also have PSHEE days which allow them to explore topics in greater detail. For example, we ran a day looking at ‘Surviving and Thriving in School’, involving first aid, healthy eating, safe travel and school values. Our older students mirrored this with a ‘Surviving and Thriving in the World’ day, focused on first aid, sexual health and self-defence. It is key that PSHEE seeks to cover other important health topics too such as mental
health awareness, diversity and inclusion. Educating students early on will help them to foster a sense of belonging within their wider school community, to recognise and assess risks, while empowering them to make informed choices for their own wellbeing and to seek help and advice from a trusted adult when needed.
A strong partnership between school and home is imperative for any successful PSHEE programme. In line with this, we have hosted a range of events in school that have been well-attended by our student’s families, more recently we had close to 100 parents attend a ‘Teenage Risk’ event that covered some contentious issues such as gaming addiction, parties and festivals etc. It was fantastic to see so many parents actively engaging in discussions around the topics their children are learning about. Moving forward we are looking at running an online talk for parents on the topic of masculinity. Working with parents to equip children with the skills they need provides huge advantages and allows for a deeper
understanding of the issues young people may face today. Having a strong foundation in PSHEE can also lead to improved academic performance. If a student feels emotionally and socially secure, they are more likely to engage in their lessons and succeed academically.
As we look ahead, our students will have a period on their timetable dedicated to PSHEE. Not only does this provide opportunities for more in-depth discussion and learning for each topic, but it allows us to nurture, train and develop a team of confident PSHEE teachers, who are committed to delivering outstanding lessons. The additional time will also allow space for project work within the PSHEE curriculum with students planning and leading assemblies, giving presentations, putting on debates, building board games and making websites etc.
In summary, PSHEE is an essential ingredient of the school curriculum because it nurtures the personal and social development of our students, equipping them with the skills and
knowledge they need to navigate the complexities of life e ectively. By investing in high quality training for teachers and prioritising PSHEE as a subject, schools can help to foster a more supportive environment where young people can thrive both academically and personally.
