LETTER Editor’s

ABSOLUTELY’S April issue highlights

My favourite book as a kid was Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. I just loved the vivid descriptions of all the goodies, which were brought to life with the Gene Wilder-starring film (showing my age).

Wishlist

As an advertisement, it worked wonders on me. Every time I ventured into a sweet shop, I just had to treat myself to a brand new chocolate bar, influenced by whatever wrapper took my fancy. As I got older, the relationship became a little strained. I became obsessed with my fitness, so for me chocolate was a no-go.

It wasn't long before I realised the folly of my ways. You see, chocolate is good for you, in small doses of course – but when it comes to Easter, just like the Christmas over indulgence, I reckon those restrictions should always be put to one side. So I had lots of fun sampling five of the best chocolate shops Hertfordshire has to offer, before sitting back (and digesting) to write about some of the top events coming our way over the school holidays.

There may not be a crazy entrepreneur called Willy Wonka leading us astray, but there's plenty out there to leave a chocolate-smeared smile on your face. Enjoy the issue!

WORLD MAN ’S

Alexandra Wood was the first female Savile Row tailor to o er style expertise to busy men. Here she explains how she did it

At the time of Absolutely’s call with Alexandra Wood, she is in New York. “I am here o ering exclusive, byappointment styling and tailoring consultations for those looking for a fresh take on Savile Row tailoring,” she says excitedly. “A couple of our wardrobe clients happen to live in or near New York, so it’s been a natural flow which I’m excited about.”

It shows how far the Much Hadham tailor has come. Frequenting London’s Jermyn Street when she was younger gave Alexandra an early insight into the world of bespoke tailoring. “I’ve always been fascinated by the transformative power of clothing,” she says. “From a young age, I loved the idea that what you wear can completely change the way you feel and how others perceive you. I remember experimenting with fabrics, cuts, and styles, even as a child, and that curiosity never left me.”

Alexandra tells a great story about shopping with her father. “My Dad and I would shop together from primary school age. He’d set me a budget each season and encourage me to purchase investment pieces. It was our time to bond and rather than concentrate on my own purchases, I would encourage him to buy expensive quality clothing and shoes that I thought would look cool on him. These moments were about bonding,

and they ignited my absolute love for men’s design and transformation.”

A career in women’s tailoring began at the age of 21 at Shanghai Tang, where Alexandra was the youngest and first female bespoke manager ever hired there. “I redesigned their bespoke collection,” she explains, “and that experience taught me so much –not just about design, but also about how tailoring could be an art form. Seeing my work featured in Hello magazine and worn by celebrities made me realise the impact great clothing can have. I also learned that success in this industry isn’t just about making clothes; it’s about understanding people, their confidence, and how they want to present themselves to the world.”

But those days spent making her father look the part continued to bubble away in the background. “I saw a huge gap in the market,” she says about moving into men’s tailoring. “Women’s fashion has always been about transformation and creativity, but for men, the experience of shopping for clothes – especially bespoke tailoring – felt outdated and uninspiring. Men often find shopping stressful and I wanted to change that. My goal was to create a service that was e ortless, enjoyable, and ultimately helped men feel their absolute best.

“I love the psychology behind it,” Alexandra adds about creating a look for a man. “Tailoring isn’t just fabric; it’s about confidence, success, and personal branding. When I create a tailored wardrobe for a client, I’m not just making suits – I’m

helping them refine their presence and feel powerful in any situation. Seeing a client put on a bespoke outfit and immediately stand taller with a new level of confidence is incredibly rewarding.”

So, at the tender age of 26, Alexandra launched her own business. “I started with nothing – no financial backing, no fancy showroom, just a deep belief in my vision and a relentless drive to make it work,” she says. “Over the years, I navigated two financial crashes and a pandemic, but I learned that resilience and adaptability are key. Each challenge pushed me to refine my approach and become even stronger in business.”

Absolutely has often ventured to Savile Row, but there is always a very similar experience: well-to-do, formal and if you don’t know your fashion onions, a little intimidating. “Savile Row is steeped in tradition, which is both wonderful and limiting at times,” Alexandra adds to

“I felt there was room to make men's tailoring more accessible”

our list. “When I first started visiting tailors, I admired the craftsmanship, but found the experience quite rigid. I felt there was room to make tailoring more accessible, modern, and fun.”

Becoming the first female Savile Row tailor to design, tailor, and o er style expertise to busy professionals, Absolutely admits that the first thing that comes to mind is Alexandra would face a degree of sexism in being a trailblazer. “I found everyone to be incredibly supportive (unless I was just very naive) and intrigued by a fresh approach to menswear,” she says. “Tailoring has long been a maledominated industry, so stepping into that world as a woman was seen as very refreshing by my clients at least. Suppliers were oddly a little trickier, but I didn’t let that deter me – I focused on delivering impeccable work and proving that talent, not gender, defines success. I wanted

to strip away the intimidation factor that often comes with bespoke tailoring. Instead of a sti , traditional experience, I wanted my clients to feel relaxed, engaged, and excited about the process. My approach is consultative, guiding men to make great style choices while ensuring everything is e ortless for them.”

Savile Row may be the face of the business, but the real body of work happens in Much Hadham. “That is our design home and is where the magic happens. It’s a creative space where I develop new designs and test new fabrics before they’re put forward to our clients. It’s also where I host select clients who want an exclusive, relaxed tailoring experience away from the city.

“We’ve been based in Much Hadham for a few years,” Alexandra continues.

“It’s a beautiful, peaceful village that gives me space to think, create, and innovate. The contrast between the serenity of the countryside and the fast-paced energy of London and beyond is perfect for balance.”

What’s clear is that Alexandra Wood is going places. “When I started, I focused solely on bespoke suits. Over time, I realised that men needed a more holistic approach to their wardrobes – so I introduced full wardrobe solutions, styling guidance, and capsule collections which were far more aligned with my eye for knowing what suits a man even before it’s been made,” she says on the company’s evolution. “Now, I o er everything from relaxed luxury pieces to fully tailored wardrobes. Our goal is to provide a holistic wardrobe solution that not only elevates their personal style, but also simplifies the process of looking your best every day.” And whether it’s Londoners or New Yorkers, the men of the world are certainly reaping the benefits.

BUSINESS: Founder, Alban Recruitment Solutions

WEBSITE: albanrecruitment.co.uk

Q When did you launch Alban Recruitment Solutions and what did you want to o er?

Absolutely visits a trio of female business leaders to see how they are leading the way in their respective fields

A I launched Alban Recruitment Solutions in May 2024, after being made redundant from my previous role where I had spent 17 years. My aim was to o er a more tailored and transparent approach to recruitment. I wanted to create a company that focused on building strong, lasting relationships with both clients and candidates. My goal was not just to fill positions, but to match the right talent with the right opportunities, ensuring long-term success for both parties.

Q How do you like to work with new clients?

A When working with new clients, I like to take a consultative and collaborative approach. The first step is always to understand their company culture, values, and specific needs so I can o er the most tailored solutions. I focus on

building strong, open communication from the start, ensuring we’re aligned on expectations, timelines, and the kind of talent they’re looking for. I believe in a partnership rather than just a transactional relationship, and I strive to be a trusted partner throughout the recruitment process.

Q And what do you do to help candidates?

A I like to really get to know candidates and understand what they’re looking for in their next role – whether it’s the job itself or the type of company they want to work for. I’m always there to give advice on things like resumes and interviews, helping them feel prepared and confident. I stay in touch throughout the process, making sure they’re updated and feeling supported. My goal is to help them secure a job where they’ll be happy and thrive, not just a position to fill.

Q Where are you based and what do you love about being there?

A I’m based in St Albans, and I really love it here. It’s a beautiful, historic city with a great mix of old and new. I was born and raised here, so the city holds so many memories for me. Now, I’m creating new ones as I raise my family here too.

Q When did you first start creating your own chocolates and what kind of things were you making?

A Around 15 years ago, I began to take a greater interest in chocolate recipes, perfecting a variety of desserts for family get-togethers. Starting with chocolate pots and mousses accompanied with orange polenta biscuits, I eventually began to create hand rolled tru es filled with an assortment of flavoured ganaches.

Q How do you look back on the early days of your business?

A Setting up a business from scratch is always challenging, identifying target markets, advertising and selecting appropriate locations to sell products. Navigating the new world of business proved di cult at times, but our passion for creating unique and delicious flavours kept our motivation high. Working from our home kitchen was tough, due to equipment and area limitations, but within our first six months we were shortlisted for Top of the Shop, a TV programme showcasing small independent businesses. At the same time, we were awarded our first Great Taste Awards, receiving 1 Star for our Co ee Mocha and another 1 Star for our signature Dark Salted Caramel Bark.

Q How would you say you have evolved?

A Our biggest evolution as a business would be having our own shop in Potten End, attached to our professional chocolate kitchen. This has allowed us to expand our customer base, we now stock our chocolates in several locations including Hatfield House in Hertfordshire. On a more bespoke front we also work with individuals to create unique flavours for special occasions, such as wedding favours or corporate events.

BUSINESS: Managing Partner, Debenhams Ottaway

WEBSITE: debenhamsottaway.co.uk

Q Can you give us a brief history of Debenhams Ottaway Solicitors?

A Debenhams Ottaway is a multiservice law firm based in the heart of St Albans, with an o ce in Radlett and a London space. Whilst we provide a modern approach to the law, we’ve been around in one way or another since the late 1700s! Today we are trusted advisers to business owners, family o ces, professionals, entrepreneurs and wealthy families in Hertfordshire, London and across the UK. We help them to navigate legal challenges and make the most of new opportunities at home and in business.

Q What is your role at the company?

A As managing partner, my role is to inspire the team at Debenhams Ottaway, nurturing our lawyers and business support teams so they feel supported, motivated and appreciated. My main vision is to change the way people think about lawyers. I work with our partners and operations board to achieve this vision.

I started working at Debenhams Ottaway over 26 years ago as a paralegal. I’ve always felt supported and encouraged to share my ideas and that has spurred me on to inspire the next generation of lawyers and business support teams. I am proud

to be a female managing partner supported by many other women – over half our partnership and senior leadership team are female, which is still unusual in law.

Q What would you say Debenhams Ottaway has become known for?

A I’m proud that our clients see us as their trusted adviser, helping them through major life changes such as divorce or selling a business. Our reputation is built on trust and we have long standing relationships with our clients. Regularly collecting feedback gives us an invaluable understanding of what is important to our clients and how they found working with us. By listening and acting on this feedback, our clients come back to us again and again.

We also strive to be seen as an employer of choice. I always believe that it’s important to make time for others and listen more than you speak, making Debenhams Ottaway a place where your ideas are heard and acted on. What I am particularly proud of is that we progress our people from junior to senior positions in the firm, empowering them to be the best that they can be – over half of our partners trained at Debenhams Ottaway (including myself!) and our Head of Finance started with us as a legal cashier. In putting our people first and developing them, I’m confident that we will always provide the best legal advice and service to our clients.

Perhaps, like me, you recently attended your child’s school performance, phone in hand ready to take pictures or videos for the family WhatsApp groups. Whilst parents around me pulled out their phones as their child took to the stage the first performance began, and it was my son. As I held my phone posed, keen to not miss the moment, I realised the obligatory introductions and welcome, along with the request to use the digital records responsibly and privately had yet to be given. You would think this was a given, that most parents would be mindful of this important factor – we’re frequently asked to acknowledge school policies on data protection and privacy. But it got me thinking about our children’s online presence and how this should be an ongoing, vital discussion for parents, and even more so for separating families.

The use of our children’s images and sharing these on social media can cause disagreements between parents. Families have di erent views of what is ‘OK’ for them and their children and with the digital world forever developing, staying ahead of the changing needs of our children and what is appropriate for their age, what their peers are doing and what our individual children need, is nay on impossible for most.

Your Wi-Fi

Decisions on our children’s internet presence: what about when a family separates?

So, when families change, parents separate, and communication may become strained, less frequent or non-existent even, managing the changing needs for our children online is an additional challenge.

‘Sharenting’ means sharing our children’s images on social media. It’s convenient, keeping people connected, but the internet doesn’t forget and parents’ views on what is ok can diverge. These are things separating parents must think about more and more. For now, the protection and management of our children’s online activity is up to the parents. But even parents not going through the challenges of family separation will find this a formidable task.

Recently the co-founder of the vast Roblox gaming platform was reported to comment that he was content with the protections in place: that if we don’t want our children on the platform, just not to allow them. This is a gaming empire that attracts millions of children (and adults). So, just another (albeit pressing) aspect of parenting that inevitably risks relegation to the backburner when parents separate. How do separating parents achieve communication that enables them to explore not only this challenge, but also the many other complexities of co-parenting? What about their own approach to sharing on social media? And how can they support each other in delivering clear messages to their children across both households?

Many separating couples turn to lawyers to support them in this time. That is often a necessary and wise choice. Family law specialists will emphasise the variety of avenues on o er to ease people through the process of separation.

A vital outcome for families wherever possible is to continue to keep talking, co-parenting and consulting through the separation and out the other side. Yet for many, that seems an impossible goal. A priority in resolving arrangements for children is their wellbeing – this is paramount. Mediation is one of the few avenues that enables separating couples to have the essential conversations. Mediators provide information about the legal backdrop and support couples in making informed decisions. Crucially, mediation gives co-parents the space to define how they will navigate parenting together for the wellbeing of their children.

LSL Family Law provides a variety of support services for divorced and separating couples. Speak with one of our highly trained Resolution accredited solicitors who can provide you with support on potential next steps.

THE GOLDEN FLEECE IN BRAUGHING

20 Green End, Braughing, Ware SG11 2PG, 01920 823555

Q What was your first professional job in a kitchen and what did you learn from it?

A My first job was as a pot-wash and kitchen assistant at the Golden Fleece when I was 15-years-old. I learnt to listen, pay attention, and that speed and detail are key.

Q Today, how would you describe your cooking style?

A My cooking style is varied. I love experimenting with di erent types of cuisines, using a variety of ingredients and flavours so our menu at the Golden Fleece reflects these international themes.

Q When did the opportunity to take over The Golden Fleece first come up and why were you and Peter keen to run it?

A We had the chance to take on ‘The Fleece’ back in 2000, but the sale fell through so we took over the lease at the George and Dragon, in Watton-at-Stone, where I was head chef at the time. The Golden Fleece came up for sale in 2010 having been closed for 10 years and this

sale happened to coincide with our lease at the George being up for renewal. It was just meant to be. It was a place that was very special to us, as it had been a hub of my home village for so many years and had started my career and love of hospitality too.

Q Were there many challenges before opening?

A We faced so many hurdles with re-opening the pub. The place was essentially derelict, the bar and kitchen had all been ripped out, the floorboards stacked up in the garden, and the garden itself hadn’t been touched for around six years. It was a true labour of love to get it up and running. We had such tremendous support from local people to help us get the building back to a fully tradeable state again in a very short space of time. We bought it in April and opened it on Braughing Wheelbarrow race night in July. It was all hands to the pump for three months with everyone we knew pitching in to clean, re-wire, re-plumb, re-build, paint and decorate everywhere. This included our living accommodation on site too as we had a two-year-old and a seven-year-old at the time. It was hectic to say the least, but we all did it!

Q What are you looking to o er with the menus?

A We aim to o er freshly made, home prepared, delicious, interesting food at a sensible price that people can enjoy and know that it is cooked by a chef who is passionate about her food.

Q Is there one dish on the menus you particularly love right now – and if so, why?

A On the menu at the moment is curry of the week, which allows me to cook such a variety of dishes. I adore trying out di erent cuisines and flavours, such as our fabulous Malaysian inspired beef rendang or Thai massaman curry.

KITCHEN Out of the

What is your favourite meal to cook when it’s just you and Peter?

One of my favourite meals to cook is duck breast pan-fried and served on puy lentils with crème fraîche d’Isigny, cracked black pepper and a side of green beans sauteed with garlic. It reminds me of my second favourite place in the world, in France.

What do you love about being based in Braughing?

What’s not to love? It’s the village that I grew up in from the age of two. It is one of the most beautiful villages I can think of. The sense of community that everyone has makes it such a welcoming place to live. This is shown from the support for the village post office hub that we host at the pub two days a week through to the Braughing Wheelbarrow Race on the second Saturday in July every year, which has been running for over 60 years and just gets better and more enjoyable each year (I am a little biased as I’m on the committee for this event). It just showcases how incredible our village is to several thousand people in one day. I truly love living and working in Braughing and feel very privileged to be able to do so.

Describe your perfect day… My perfect day would definitely involve a bit of a lie in. I do love my sleep. Breakfast would be freshly baked bread (some of my Dad’s homemade sourdough preferably) with salt crystal butter. Then a wander around the village to the Bone, which is the local wood with paths through it. I have been playing and walking through there for 50 years and it is as beautiful as ever. Although my rule on my Mondays off is that I leave the cooking up to my husband and sons, I still enjoy making the odd cake, so I would probably make my Mum’s recipe carrot cake – dairy free, so both my sons can tuck in to it too. In the evening, and I’m banking on my perfect day being warm and sunny, I would sit in our garden at the pub with a negroni or Aperol spritz and my boys would cook a barbecue for us with local ribeye steaks, Mediterranean vegetables, tabouleh and green salad. Maybe some cheese and red wine to finish off the evening sat on the patio, listening to some music with my family around and playing cards. I’m an ace at Rummy! That all sounds like heaven to me.

Q What’s new for spring?

A For spring we will definitely be adding asparagus to our menu. We have an allotment in the village so we are able to use the produce from there (and my parents’ allotment – if I ask nicely). We have several asparagus beds on the lotty and nothing beats the taste of freshly cut and cooked English asparagus.

Hand-finished earthenware ceramics and rattan accessories complete the look, o ering stylish storage solutions for kitchen and dining essentials while adding texture and interest.

The much-loved Chester Pure White collection e ortlessly blends rustic charm with contemporary design, o ering a variety of pieces perfect for the kitchen and dining room. A standout piece is the butcher’s block, which features a solid wood top that contrasts

beautifully with the crisp white paint finish and complementary wooden handles. Designed for both style and functionality, it provides ample surface space for meal preparation, along with two handy slatted shelves for storing pots, pans, and recipe books.

Equally practical and elegant, the matching larder o ers generous storage, combining clean lines, a pure white paint finish, and a contrasting oak top for a beautifully crafted look. Inside, a thoughtfully designed space awaits, with shelves, racks, and drawers perfectly suited for storing spices, packets, jars, tins, and more. Three exposed lower crates provide an ideal solution for keeping potatoes and root vegetables cool, dry, and protected from sunlight.

The Chester collection brings elegance to every room in the home, seamlessly complementing both modern and classic interiors. Hand-applied, wax-oiled finishes add a contemporary touch, subtly contrasting with each colourway. Crafted using traditional woodworking methods, including mortise and tenon solid wood frames for extra strength and dovetailed drawers for durability, Chester is built to last. Supplied with a choice of two handles, its timeless style enhances any space.

“IT COULD BE SAID THAT THE DINING TABLE IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PIECES OF FURNITURE IN THE HOME”

It could be said that the dining table is one of the most important pieces of furniture in the home. Generously proportioned for family dining and entertaining alike, the Chester Pure White 6-10 extending dining table o ers exceptional versatility, extending to 260cm when catering for a crowd. Sturdily built yet elegantly styled to suit both classic and contemporary interior styles, it features an oak and high-quality oak veneer top – waxed to enhance the grain and provide protection – paired with a sophisticated, white-painted frame for a modern country appeal that is timeless.

For those who prefer the beauty of a natural wood finish, the Inglesham Whitewash Oak display cabinet is the perfect choice, o ering ample storage and an elegant way to display everyday tableware or treasured pieces for special occasions. OCOLOUR SENSE

Beata Heuman has launched a new collection of paints with Mylands, and her own home is the perfect showcase for them

riginally from Sweden, Beata Heuman is an interior designer who has been making waves in the design world since founding her own practice in 2013. Her work is thoughtful, creative and full of nostalgia, making her popular with an imaginative audience and establishing “a well-deserved reputation for homes filled with whimsical, personal details” (British Vogue). Beata is a fixture on all major lists of the world’s most talented interior designers with Architectural Digest calling her the “It girl of the AD 100” and Forbes singling her out as “One of the most soughtafter interior designers in Britain”.

Beata’s approach to colour is instinctive; she is known for just getting it right, so news that she has launched a paint colour collaboration is sparking a lot of interest. She has teamed up with Mylands, the luxury British paint and wood polishes manufacturer, to create The Dependables, a collection of 24 considered, vivid and reliable paint colours. Encapsulating a palette of shades refined over decades of designing interiors, The Dependables are trusted colours you can rely on: versatile light neutrals to cover most walls, mid-tones for shadowy depth in places, darker shades to add edge and contrast, a generous sprinkling of uplifting but calming greens and blues, buttery, irresistible yellows and a sizzling pop of red to add the cherry on the cake.

BEATA HEUMAN

The collection is easy to navigate and decorate with

Beata has long admired Mylands, which has been perfecting the art of fine paints for over 140 years and five generations, an expertise for which it was awarded a Royal Warrant in 1985. Mylands is one of the last remaining manufacturers to still use natural earth pigments in its paints, which makes them durable, colour rich and kind to the planet. Each of the 24 trusted shades has been carefully honed and tested to ensure they work in most settings, in di erent combinations and cohesively as a whole. Though curated and succinct, the collection is versatile and full of possibility. When picking the best paint colours to use at home there is an almost limitless choice available. This collection is designed to be an edited range that is easy to navigate and decorate with, and can be returned to again and again.

On the collection, Beata says: “It has been my dream to do my own paint collection, I am very specific about colour, and I think about it a lot, so it has been thoroughly

enjoyable expressing that and now being able to share it with a bigger audience. The team at Mylands are so enthusiastic about paint and colour, and working with Anna Steel, Head of Colour Development, has been a crucial part of the process. When we found ourselves seven tries down in the sampling process with Cigar, even I was close to giving up! Anna kept pushing and I think that commitment to getting it right really shines through looking at the collection we’ve created.”

Dominic Myland, CEO, Mylands, adds: “From capturing a perfect white in No. 1 Beata White, which I’m sure will be universally loved, to cheering pops of brighter hues, these colours are sophisticated and easy to use. I really appreciate her dedication to developing exactly the right shade with Anna and our team at the factory; it mirrors our own passion for creating beautiful colours that will stand the test of time.”

ST ALBANS SCHOOL

Talented pupils from a group of primary schools across St Albans came together for a unique music workshop day recently, where they enjoyed rehearsing and performing with children from the wider community. Hosted by St Albans School, the live learning experience welcomed around 35 musical pupils. st-albans.herts.sch.uk

Q You’ve recently taken on the Headship at St Albans. What have the first few months been like for you and your family?

A St Albans School is an outstanding institution in so many di erent ways, and I knew when the opportunity came up to lead it, it would be too good of an opportunity to pass up on. I feel honoured to be a steward for this community and my family and I have been made to feel most welcome here. My arrival also coincided with a challenging time for independent schools, and the families who make great sacrifices to send their children to them. Unwelcome cost increases in a number of areas mean that we need to work harder than ever to ensure that what we o er here at St Albans School is what we say it is – an outstanding education. It is not yet quite clear to me (or indeed anyone) what the future might hold, or what this great school might look like at the end of the next thousand years, but what I do know is this – that the school’s aim is to help each

pupil flourish intellectually and personally, developing self-knowledge and self-confidence in order to find meaning and purpose in life.

Q Strengthening community partnerships beyond the school gates is an important goal for you. Can you tell us more about your aspirations around this?

A For me, building partnerships is about durability, it is never about short-term gain; rather, it is about the reciprocal value of working together as a community. Genuine partnership is so much more powerful than ‘outreach’ which can feel rather quaint, somehow inappropriate or ‘top down’ these days. As one of many schools in Hertfordshire, it strikes me that we are all heading towards the same destination, we are just treading di erent paths, so we have much to learn from one another. Building strong community links is important for our school in becoming an integral part of the wider community. We recognise we are in a fortunate position and

if we can share our expertise and resources, as well as simultaneously learn from others, then that is beneficial for everyone.

Q What are the benefits of being a city school with access to beautiful countryside?

A It is having the best of both worlds. St Albans is not an isolated school up a long driveway away from the real world. We are based in town and are a visible and active part of our community. But at the same time, we are fortunate to be able to make use of the beautiful surroundings of Hertfordshire. Having moved here recently, I honestly don’t think I had realised what an amazing county it is. There is so much to do and see. So much nature, culture and things going on every day. Places like St Albans and Harpenden are vibrant and full of life, but they are also moments away from beautiful stretches of countryside.

Quite the STORY

Experiencing World Book Day magic at Beechwood Park

Beechwood Park was transformed into a world of literary wonder as pupils and sta celebrated World Book Day in spectacular style. The school was buzzing with excitement as children arrived dressed as their favourite book characters, bringing beloved stories to life. From Harry Potter and the Brontë sisters to roaming dinosaurs, Oompa Loompas, and even a few Mr. Men, the creativity on display was truly inspiring.

Throughout the day, pupils immersed themselves in a range of book-themed activities designed to spark their love of reading. Junior pupils enjoyed cozy story sessions, while older students took part in engaging discussions about their

favourite books and authors. Katie York, Beechwood Park’s Head of English, says: “It’s always so wonderful how involved the entire Beechwood Park community gets with World Book Day each year. Whilst the costume e orts of the children (and the parents!) are always fantastic, what’s really heartwarming is the interactions between pupils as they discover new characters and authors. Our top formers even created their own World Book Day vlog (see our Instagram @bwpschool) to give a behind-the-scenes look at the day.

“But beyond the fun and creativity, it’s important to remember why we celebrate World Book Day,” she continues. “In the UK, almost 1 million children (1 in 12) don’t have a book of their own. Additionally, over half of children and young people

“It's wonderful how involved the school community gets with World Book Day”

(56%) do not enjoy reading in their free time, with reading for pleasure at its lowest level since 2005.” World Book Day at Beechwood Park is about more than just dressing up, it’s a celebration of imagination, storytelling, and the joy of books. Encouraging children to develop a lifelong love of reading is at the heart of the school’s approach, and this special day highlighted the magic that stories bring into our lives. We’re already looking forward to next year’s literary adventure!

HARRY POTTER

Fans are invited to celebrate a special anniversary with a brand-new feature at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London

During Harry’s fourth year at Hogwarts, he is mysteriously selected to take part in the Triwizard Tournament, despite being under the qualifying age. During the contest, Harry is put through a series of fearsome challenges as he comes face-to-face with a fire-breathing dragon, retrieves his friends from the Black Lake and faces obstacles and creatures along the way.

Now, the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London in Leavesden invites visitors to go behind-the-scenes of the Triwizard Tournament from the Goblet of Fire and discover how filmmakers created the competition with neverbefore-seen secrets to be revealed.

For summer 2025 for the firsttime ever, Warner Bros. Studio Tour London will introduce its Backlot Stage, showcasing the Secrets of Special E ects. A new, dedicated indoor space, where visitors will discover how filmmakers brought the action-packed scenes from the Triwizard Tournament to life.

Comprising a digital screen, a stage and tiered seating, the Backlot Stage promises to uncover secrets that not even the most knowledgeable Muggle will know. From creating the Hungarian Horntail dragon to understanding how Harry held his breath for so long underwater, all will be uncovered as part of the feature.

Fans will remember the iconic moments from the fourth film where the three well-known schools of magic – Hogwarts, Beauxbaton and Durmstrang – go head-to-head to be crowned the champion of the Triwizard

Tournament. The Studio Tour will bring the schools to life with a demonstration reminiscent of the Beauxbaton and Durmstrang students’ arrival, equipped with the iconic blue dresses and fur accessories as seen in the film.

Also new for the Studio Tour, those who are brave enough are invited to take their name from the free Activity Passport and put it into the Goblet of Fire, which will be waiting for them in the wand room.

Further additions include Mad Eye Moody’s arrival into the Great Hall, wizarding journalist Rita Skeeter, best known for her poison pen articles, will be welcomed to the Studio Tour along with her self-writing quill, and elsewhere, the Forbidden Forest will recreate the all-important moment when Hagrid reveals the first task to Harry.

After opening its doors to visitors on 31st March 2012, Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter celebrated its 13th anniversary earlier this year. The highly rated attraction o ers visitors the ultimate chance to get up close to authentic sets to discover the magic behind spellbinding special e ects and explore the behind-thescenes secrets of the Harry Potter film series. Visitors can explore the original Great Hall, step into the Forbidden Forest, discover Gringotts Wizarding Bank and pull out a Mandrake in Professor Sprout’s Greenhouse all before marvelling at the breath-taking miniature scale model of Hogwarts castle.

Triwizard Tournament – Making of Champions will run until 8th September and all new features are included in the ticket price. See more at wbstudiotour.co.uk
