ABSOLUTELY’S November issue highlights

Iremember Christmas gifts as indicators of where I was in my life at the time. The first one I truly remember was the Millennium Falcon toy from Star Wars – I don't think I have ever been so in awe since. Then around 11 I recall being gifted my first football shirt, swiftly followed a year later by some boots when I decided to try and emulate my sporting heroes. Into the teens and it was all computer games (I spent FAR too long holed up in my room on the ever-evolving consoles, from my beloved ZX Spectrum to an Amiga), and as I hit university it was money, which was swiftly spent down the pub.

5

As I have got older, yes, I have become that hard to buy for person. It's not deliberate, or due to any kind of fatigue around Christmas (I love this time of the year), but I genuinely don't ever know what I want when asked. One year I did actually receive pants and socks, although a few hours later my 'real' present came out and it was all a big laugh.

So when our gift guide special comes around, it's very much not just work for me. I am really intrigued to know what kind of goodies are hitting the market this year. I have certainly got my eye on the Fujifilm instant camera and maybe, finally, I can embrace that love for photography in 2026.

And if you need a little encouragement to get into the spirit, we also present a look at Essex's top festive trails – it's a true gift.

Good intentions

As Sir Grayson Perry heads out on tour, we explore his Essex roots, radical art, and looking into the heart of human virtue

Sir Grayson Perry has become one of Britain’s most distinctive cultural figures: a Turner Prizewinning artist, a crossdressing public intellectual, a television documentarian, and a national treasure whose mix of wit, irreverence, and insight has reshaped the way we think about art and society. Yet behind the accolades and flamboyant dresses lies a story rooted in ordinary Essex suburbia, where Sir Grayson’s imaginative world first began to take shape. He is now in the middle of a new national tour, Are You Good?, which promises to continue his lifelong project of questioning who we are, how we live, and what we value.

ESSEX ROOTS

Born in Chelmsford in 1960, Grayson Perry grew up in a working-class family in Broomfield. It was in Essex that Sir Grayson began to develop the qualities that would later define him: curiosity, eccentricity, and an irrepressible imagination. He was fascinated

by the world of model making, building elaborate fantasy landscapes out of Airfix kits. He also began experimenting with drawing, and his sketchbooks became places where he could both escape and control his world.

Most notably, Sir Grayson discovered transvestism as a teenager, secretly dressing in women’s clothes as a means of self-expression long before he understood its significance in his life and work.

Growing up in 1970s Essex, this was not an easy path to tread. Yet his alter ego, “Claire”, would eventually become a central part of his public persona – an emblem of his defiance of convention and his embrace of fluid identities.

The Essex of Sir Grayson’s childhood was suburban, aspirational, and slightly constrained: a place where appearances mattered and neighbours watched one another closely. That environment sharpened his eye for the nuances of class, taste, and social performance. It was fertile ground for someone who would later dedicate his career to dissecting British society in all its contradictions.

BECOMING AN ARTIST

After leaving home, Sir Grayson studied at Braintree College and later at Portsmouth Polytechnic, where he immersed himself in the vibrant art scene of the late 1970s and early 1980s. He was initially drawn to film and performance, but soon discovered ceramics, a medium traditionally dismissed as craft rather than high art. His ceramics combined traditional craftsmanship with biting social commentary, political satire, and autobiographical confession. At a time when the art world was dominated by conceptual installations and austere minimalism, Sir Grayson’s colourful, narrative-driven pots seemed anachronistic. By the late 1990s, Sir Grayson was gaining recognition, culminating in his winning of the Turner Prize in 2003. Accepting the award in one of his flamboyant dresses, he declared that he was “the potter’s potter”, bringing the ancient art of ceramics into the contemporary spotlight. His victory cemented his reputation as both an artist of substance and a performer of ideas.

FROM THE GALLERY TO THE NATION

Sir Grayson’s career since has been a whirlwind of exhibitions, television projects, books, and public appearances. His art has never been confined to one form: he has created tapestries, sculptures, prints, dresses, even an entire building – A House for Essex, a collaboration with FAT Architecture, which sits on the banks of the River Stour like a shrine to local myth and memory. His exhibitions have travelled the world, from Guerilla Tactics at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in 2002 to The Most Popular Exhibition Ever! (2015–17), which explored populism, politics, and art’s relationship with audiences. His 2012 series The Vanity of Small Di erences – six vast tapestries chronicling a modern-day rags-to-riches story – brought together his lifelong interests in class, taste, and morality.

On television, Sir Grayson has proved a natural communicator. His 2013 series All in the Best Possible Taste, which examined British class identity through art, won him a BAFTA. He followed it with Who Are You? (2014), a profound exploration of identity through portraits of people at turning points in their lives.

During the COVID-19 lockdowns, Sir Grayson and his wife, the psychotherapist Philippa Perry, became household names through Grayson’s Art Club. The programme invited people across the UK to make art as a way of coping with isolation. Combining

“Are you good? A question I think that is fundamental to our humanity”

humour, warmth, and sincerity, it showed him at his best: not just a maker of objects, but a facilitator of creativity, connecting people through shared imagination.

THE TOUR: ARE YOU GOOD?

In October 2025, Sir Grayson set out on his latest project – not in a gallery, but on stages across the UK. His new tour, Are You Good?, promises to be part performance, part philosophy seminar, and part comedy night.

The premise is disarmingly simple: Sir Grayson will ask audiences whether they are as virtuous as they believe. “Are you Good? A question that I think is fundamental to our humanity,” he explains. “I always start out with the assumption that people are born good and then life happens. So, let’s pull back the curtain and see where your morals truly lie.”

The show will mix audience participation with Sir Grayson’s trademark wit, as well as a few “silly songs”. He teases that “no one leaves unscathed”, suggesting that the evening will be as confronting as it is entertaining. In a world where debates about morality, virtue, and justice are increasingly fraught, Sir Grayson will invite audiences to reflect – playfully but pointedly – on what it really means to live a good life.

Crucially, Are You Good? continues his long-standing fascination with values, identity, and the tension between personal freedom and social responsibility. Just as his tapestries once chronicled the moral codes of British society, and his

documentaries questioned the stories we tell about ourselves, the tour will bring these questions directly into the theatre. By framing the issue in such an interactive way, Sir Grayson is once again blurring boundaries: this time between artist and audience, performer and participant.

That Sir Grayson should now be leading the nation in a collective stocktake of our morals feels fitting. From the narrow lanes and suburban houses of Essex, he has travelled the world as an artist, writer, and broadcaster. Yet the Essex perspective remains central: the sharp eye for social codes, the fascination with class aspiration, the humour born of both defiance and survival. Growing up in Essex, Sir Grayson experienced first-hand how fragile identity could be, how appearances could both protect and imprison, and how creativity could o er a way out. Those lessons have shaped everything he has done since.

As he takes to the stage in 2025 with Are You Good?, Sir Grayson will be doing what he has always done: holding up a mirror to society, but a mirror that distorts, exaggerates, and entertains as much as it reflects. From Essex childhood to national stages, his journey is a testament to the power of art – not just to decorate walls, but to provoke thought, foster connection, and challenge complacency.

Sir Grayson Perry will be appearing at Cli s Pavilion on 20th November. Find out more at fane.co.uk/grayson-perry

Heartfelt Care

Every Step of the Way

All ABOARD

This year marks the 200th anniversary of the railway.

Visit Essex gives us the lowdown on the best train rides and top rail attractions across the region

This year the nation is commemorating 200 years of the railway.

The golden age of steam helped put Essex and its top seaside resorts on the map.

Coastal destinations such as Clacton-on-Sea and Southendon-Sea rapidly developed due to the growth in tourism. From steam engines to high-speed intercity connections, Essex offers top daytrips for families and rail enthusiasts alike. Here’s our top things to see and do in the county…

SOUTHEND-ON-SEA PIER RAILWAY

Take a trip on the world’s longest pleasure pier, which stretches 1.25 miles into the Thames Estuary. Hop on board one of their eco-friendly electric trains and journey from Southend-on-Sea’s shore to pier head. Once there, kick back in a deckchair, ice cream, or cup of tea in hand and soak up those big-sky estuary views.

EPPING ONGAR RAILWAY

Step back in time on Essex’s longest heritage line. Vintage buses whisk visitors from Epping or Shenfield stations straight to the steam-and-diesel fuelled-trains. Experience

the romance of classic locomotives, heritage stations, and the unmistakable hiss of steam engines in full flow. The attraction also runs regular themed events, such as the Santa express, ghost trains, afternoon tea, ale and dining trains.

Rail enthusiasts will also love their driver and signal box experiences. If you’ve ever dreamt of taking to the footplate of a steam or diesel locomotive, then hop onboard. The experience is like no other, feeling the train pull away, the guided experience enables visitors to tackle challenging gradients, obey signals and stop at platforms. The attraction also offers signal box experience days where you

can control the busy railway, ensuring rolling stock gets to the right place at the right time.

COLNE VALLEY RAILWAY

Explore the picturesque Essex/ Suffolk border on a steam engine at Colne Valley Railway. The heritage railway is based in Castle Hedingham and offers a mile-long track with a pretty 1950s station in the middle. Visitors can travel onboard one of their traditionally restored carriages, while being transported back in time. Sit back, relax and enjoy a meal on their Pullman train; the train has also played a starring role in the gothic horror, Woman in Black. Or climb onboard their diesel railcar, get up close and see how the driver operates the train. Children will love their Tierney Model Railway, where you can watch the miniature trains travel around the incredibly detailed model railway. Visitors can also visit a working signal box and see how the leavers are pulled.

EAST ANGLIAN RAILWAY MUSEUM

The East Anglian Railway Museum offers 10 acres of train-lover’s heaven in Chappel, near Colchester. Discover

historic signal boxes and station buildings, peek inside the restoration shed, and marvel at the rolling stock. Families flock here for the ever-popular Thomas the Tank Engine days, which bring the magic of books and TV series to life.

While visiting don’t forget to view the incredibly impressive Chappel viaduct. The structure is 320 metres long, creating the longest bridge in East Anglia. Children will love its ‘Harry Potter’ vibes, while instagrammers will be in awe at the backdrop it creates.

AUDLEY END MINIATURE RAILWAY

All aboard for a small-scale adventure with a big dose of charm. This miniature train weaves through ancient woodland, delighting little ones and grown-ups alike. Off the tracks, there’s a huge adventure playground plus enchanting fairy and elf walks to keep the magic going. Check out their seasonal events, where you can buy tickets to meet Santa, or ride the spooky Halloween train!

THE MUSEUM OF POWER

The Museum of Power, in Langford near Maldon, isn’t just home to all things industrial, such as historic pumps, steam and

SOUTHEND ON SEA PIER PHOTO BY ROD EDWARDS

diesel engines. The museum is also home to The Langford and Beeleigh Miniature Railway. The fun train rides run on all museum event days; they’re well worth a visit, for rail lovers big and small!

AUTUMNAL WALKS

Take a walk along the Flitch Way, a former trainline that once linked Bishop’s Stortford to Braintree. Today it is a 15-mile path suitable for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. The route is a haven for wildlife: mammals, birds, flowers and insects, with the path passing the ancient royal hunting grounds of Hatfield Forest. The Flitch Way has several Victorian train stations along its course, and you can stop for a break at the former Rayne station, which is now a café with a railway carriage museum.

Another lovely walk by a trainline is the Wivenhoe Trail, which links the city of Colchester to the pretty riverside town of Wivenhoe. Amble by the River Colne for views over to Essex Wildlife Trust’s Fingringhoe nature reserve. Head through woods and spot migrating birds by the water’s edge. Stop for lunch in a pub before heading back to Colchester, either on foot or catch the train!

EXPLORE THE C2C LINE

View estuarine landscapes from the comfort of the train as you travel out of London Fenchurch Street to the coast. Pass historic forts, a castle and views over the Thames estuary as you make your way down the tracks. Leigh-on-Sea is the perfect place to stop for a mooch around their independent High Street

stores, before tucking into freshly caught seafood sold in shacks at the water’s edge. Ride the train to Southend for all the thrills of the action-packed rides at Southend’s Adventure Island. The city has so much to offer from beach-side days out to high culture in the Beecroft and Focal Arts galleries. Journey around the coast to Thorpe Bay for pretty beach-lined huts and top hotels and eateries, such as the Camelia and Roslin Beach Hotel.

GREATER LINKS

You don’t have to be a jet setter to travel on the Stansted Express. The superfast rail service from London Stansted to London Liverpool Street also provides great links to attractions on the Essex/Herts border. Audley End House and Gardens can be easily accessed via Audley End train station; there’s even bike hire at the station for you to hire and go. Audley End House and Gardens is one of Essex’s top historic houses and is well worth a visit. With a network of connections from London to Colchester, plus Manningtree, Harwich, Chelmsford and Braintree, there’s so much to see and do within a short train ride.

Also, you can expect appearances along the route by a special guest from the North Pole on dates prior to Christmas, and during the trail you’ll also enjoy dancing fountains and a ride on the festive road train to take the weight off your feet as you are transported to more enchanting sights. Along your journey, you’ll have the chance to enjoy some tasty festive treats from their Refreshment Zones located along the route at food outlets including Gourmet Sausage, Wrap and Roll and Chip ‘n’ Mix Stop.

ENLIGHTENED

HYLANDS ESTATE (CHELMSFORD), MARKSHALL ESTATE (COGGESHALL) AND COLCHESTER CASTLE PARK FROM 28 NOVEMBER enlightenedmoments.co.uk

Across all Essex venues, Enlightened will create quite the spectacle in the run up to Christmas. You will walk through a curated route after dark and encounter immersive light installations, interactive lighting zones, tunnels of lights, projections, and themed zones intended to enchant all ages.

You’ll see pulsing, flashing, and interactive light effects (with occasional haze/smoke or ambient effects). The paths make use of existing estate trails, which may include gravel, gentle slopes, and possibly muddy patches, so sensible footwear is advisable. Some sites welcome dogs on leads, though not all do – check each event’s policy.

The trail at Hylands Estate runs from 28th November to 3rd January 2026. The route is billed as “bigger, brighter, and even more magical” with brand-new installations for 2025. In past years, highlights have included a 50m digital tunnel of light, realistic holographic fairies, disco balls hung in trees, beams of light you can interact with, “talking tree” installations, and animated light sculptures. Hylands is one of the sites where dogs on leads are allowed, though subject to rules.

For 2025, the Markshall Estate trail is scheduled from 4th December to 31st December. The style here is similar to Hylands: interactive light installations, immersive walking trail, themed zones, and seasonal ambiance. In the first year at Markshall (2024) the route included over a mile of illuminated trail, a digital light tunnel, laser shows, 3D effects bringing creatures to life, stepping stones, a “land of wishes”, and interactive exhibits. Dogs on leads are allowed at Markshall (when well-behaved).

The Colchester Castle Park event runs from 12th December to 28th December. The route is set to weave around Castle Park, with the castle itself forming a dramatic and atmospheric backdrop for the light displays.

Like other sites, you’ll find tunnels of light, projections, interactive zones, and themed installations designed to enchant families and light up the winter nights.

A We are the original real Christmas Tree Farm of Essex and have been growing pumpkins, squash and Christmas trees since the 1950s at our farms just outside London. It is the farm’s 70th anniversary this year and we are a family run farm now in the 3rd generation of Christmas tree growers, and all of our children are actively involved in the growing operation at our farm. We now have over 100,000 Christmas trees maturing in our fields and are the largest real Christmas Tree Farm in Essex. We moved to our current main farm retail

site for Hurley’s Farm at Battlesbridge, Wickford, Essex 10 years ago and this is now the base for Hurley’s Pumpkin Forest & Hurley’s Christmas Tree Farm. We now only sell our fresh, real Christmas trees direct to the public from our Christmas Tree & Pumpkin Farm here.

Q What’s going on for your 10 year anniversary at the new farm site in 2025?

A We will have plenty going on to celebrate this. We will open up our tree fields to encourage our customers to walk amongst many thousands of our beautiful Christmas trees to choose their perfect real family tree direct from our growing fields.

The farm will have enchanting walkabout characters throughout, to enthral customers of all ages, from our Winter Princess to our naughty Elves. Together with family games areas and special Winter Wonderland facepaints, there will be a very festive feel.

Most importantly Santa will again be visiting our farm every weekend too, greeting families of all ages in his enchanting Santa’s Workshop. We also have coffee trucks, snack wagons, plus our special Vintage Candy Floss stand.

Q How many different varieties of trees will you be selling this year?

A Hurley’s Farm currently grow over 10 main varieties of real Christmas tree, across nearly 100 acres of beautiful Essex farmland. Nowhere else will you find such a selection of varieties, shapes, sizes, colours and fragrances.

We always have at least five varieties on sale to the public, including beautiful favourites like blue Noble Fir and super fragrant Fraser & Korean Fir. For all round balance and quality we of course have lots of the most beautiful Nordmann Fir, whilst for traditionalists we have lots of beautiful Norway Spruce. For shape and fragrance go for incredible Korean & Fraser Fir. For fragrance choose from spectacular Balsam & Douglas Fir. For ‘colour wow’ go for Lascio Carpa & Blue Spruce.

Q When are you open for the festive season?

A Hurley’s Christmas Tree Farm is open daily from 22nd November until 21st December. We are open 9am until 5pm weekdays, and 8am to 6pm at weekends.

Q What’s the advantage of buying direct from the grower?

A At our farm customers can walk amongst thousands of freshly cut trees that are all individually displayed to choose their perfect real tree. We open certain November weekends and December weekdays for customers to walk around to choose their perfect tree direct from our growing fields. For this year all 10 of our main varieties will be available to choose directly from our fields. Quality and freshness are always our top priority, with very knowledgeable staff at hand to help with any questions.

Q How do you help your buyers to care for their tree?

A Quality and freshness are always our top priority, with very knowledgeable staff at hand to help with any questions. All of our trees are supplied with detailed care labels. Most importantly after purchasing a fresh, real tree direct from a real tree farm the next most important requisite is to please make sure it is placed only in a water holding stand and kept well topped

up with clean, fresh water throughout the period. Otherwise please keep away from direct heating sources as much as possible. Please recycle trees bought from us after Christmas at our farm, or through your local authority.

Q What does it mean that your trees are grown in accordance with the British Christmas Tree Growers Environmental Code of Practice?

A All of our trees are grown to far exceed the guidelines of the growers BCTGA Environmental Code of Practice. This means trees at our farm are always grown in a sustainable and environmentally responsible way. We always plant more trees than we harvest. Furthermore, at Hurley’s Christmas Tree Farm we go above and beyond this and actively encourage natural, local fauna and flora to thrive on our farm. Biodiversity and the encouragement of a range of insects, mammals and reptiles is very important to us across our farm. Obviously, we have a real focus on promoting good habitats for bees and other pollinators.

Q What else will you be selling for Christmas?

A A huge range of the best water holding stands available on the market at great prices, freshly made natural wreaths and hangers, holly, mistletoe and a whole host of decorations.

Master the ART

Interested in cooking Indian dishes, but lacking in confidence? MasterChef finalist and Essex local, Anurag Aggarwal, o ers all the inspiration you need

“I don’t have the words to say how it felt to reach the MasterChef final”

Indian Made Easy is a delicious collection of more than 70 authentic, easy-to-follow Indian recipes from BBC MasterChef UK 2023 Finalist Anurag Aggarwal from Langdon Hills, Essex. The book is filled with modern, vibrant dishes which preserve the heart and soul of Indian cuisine, but are designed with simplicity in mind. Anurag grew up eating the food of north India; his memories of traditional home cooking encompass bold flavours, fragrant spices and the freshest of ingredients. Covering everything from breakfast, to vegetarian curries and lentils to rice dishes, soups and puddings, you can try your hand at Pea-Stuffed Flatbreads (Matar Paratha), Spinach and Indian Cottage Cheese Curry (Palak Paneer), Smoked Paprika Tiger Prawns with Red and Green Peppers (Lal Jheenga) and Slow-Cooked Lamb Shoulder

in Rogan Josh Sauce (Laal Maas) as well as sweet treats like Cinnamon Rice Pudding (Kheer) with Seasonal Berries and Sweet Dough Balls (Gulgulla). Absolutely sat down with Anurag to discuss MasterChef, family and why cooking his recipes should be about enjoyment.

Q What inspired you to apply for MasterChef UK 2023, and how did you feel when you reached the finals?

A With my love for cooking, after spending 17 years in the corporate world, I needed an avenue to express it. After exploring some other opportunities like opening a restaurant, I decided to apply for MasterChef UK to share my nostalgia for Indian cuisine with a wider audience. When I received the confirmation that I made it to the 45 contestants that would appear on the televised series, out of 20,000 applicants, that was a miracle to me. Considering that, I don’t have the words to explain how I felt when I made it to the top three finalist position. It was surreal; however, it did give me courage to take forward my passion for cooking and make it into a full-time profession.

Q How did being on MasterChef change your career and personal life?

A Being on MasterChef UK helped in many ways for my career and personal life. Firstly, it gave me immense exposure to the culinary world to learn about new cuisines, techniques, and ingredients. It provided a network, and last but not least, it gave me an internal assurance to take my passion for cooking more seriously and make it my full-time profession.

Q What role does your family play in your food journey, especially your memories of North Indian home cooking?

A Food in general, and especially Indian cuisine, is all about sharing with others. Therefore, I would like to say that my extended family back in India and immediate family in the UK has a significant role to play in my personal food journey, starting from picking inspiration from my late mother, my elder brother making dosas and my father packing our lunches. In the UK, my two young boys are my biggest admirers and critics when it comes to food. It’s very amusing – sometimes they pretend to be MasterChef judges and give me a rating for what I cook for them.

Q Did you start cooking when you were young?

A I have been cooking since the age of 10. My first cooking memory was to make a cup of Indian Chai (tea) on a gas stove. I still remember while I was doing that, my mother was so worried that I might burn myself.

Q Essex has a vibrant food culture, what are your favourite restaurants to visit?

A Without naming specific venues, I really like the quirky places in Leigh-on-sea on the Broadway. If I am in a relaxed mood, then I enjoy the small yet specialised places in or near Stock and Ingatestone. For me in any dining experience, food must be perfect without saying, however it’s the overall vibe/service of the venue that makes it worthwhile.

SPICED CRUST SEA BASS WITH CHICKPEA SALAD
ANURAG AGGARWAL

Q How do you blend your Indian heritage with your Essex upbringing in your dishes?

A Food is beyond cuisine, ingredients and people who cook it. It’s an art which thrives in nature. Therefore, there is a great influence of local ingredients and techniques on how my cooking style has evolved over the years. I like to use locally sourced seasonal ingredients to make dishes and sometimes like to give my spin on some non-Indian local favourites like fish & chips to give an Indian twist like using gram flour (what is used for pakora) rather than using plain flour for the fish batter.

Q Do you feel there’s a growing appetite for authentic yet approachable Indian cuisine in Essex?

A Well, first I would like to emphasise that the concept “authentic’’ is overrated and to an extent non-existent. As no one in this world has the authority to claim anything authentic which is man-made or assembled. Only nature produces authentic ingredients, and we take the undue credit by adding a few more nature produced ingredients, of creating an authentic dish. Well, that’s my philosophical stance.

Now coming to your question, I would say that generally Essex foodies love the variety, flavours and are always excited to try new cuisines. Therefore yes, there is definitely a very strong appetite in Essex

Q The book focuses on simplicity – what’s your top tip for someone intimidated by Indian cooking?

to have good quality and approachable Indian cuisine-based food, rather than compromising on a sub-standard and overly exaggerated Indian food options currently available in the name of ‘curry’.

Q Can you tell us the story behind your business, POD? What inspired the name and the concept?

A POD is my first step into the commercial world of food. It is inspired by the exotic spice cardamom POD, which stands for exotic, soothing aromas and something special.

Q How do you balance running a business with developing recipes and writing a cookbook?

A Well, when you love something, it doesn’t feel like work at all.

Q What made you decide to write Indian Made Easy, and why now?

A Since MasterChef UK happened two years ago, there was always this aspiration to spread my love of Indian food to as many people as possible. This book really helped to turn that into a reality. In terms of the timeline, to be honest book publishing is a very long journey, I remember having my first meeting with the publishers in November 2023 and the book was published in September 2025.

A You are correct, that’s the key theme of the book so that everyone who has never cooked Indian cuisine can pick up Indian Made Easy and follow simple instructions, buy easily accessible ingredients, and cook the tastiest dishes they have ever tried.

My top tip for beginners in Indian cuisine is do not look into the recipes where there are more than eight ingredients and cooking time is over 30 minutes. Cooking is all about fun and joy, I personally don’t see the point if cooking recipes becomes a science project.

Q Which recipe from the book is closest to your heart, and why?

A This one is a very hard question as all the recipes are very close to my heart. If I must pick one, then I will go for the handmade potato toastie (in the breakfast section) as lots of my childhood memories are linked to it.

Q What do you hope readers will take away from Indian Made Easy?

A I would be delighted if people reading Indian Made Easy can go on the same nostalgic journey that I felt while writing the book and personal inspiration behind each dish.

On the cooking side I would like to make people confident about cooking Indian cuisine and enjoying the process rather than feel daunted by the number of ingredients.

Indian Made Easy: Simple, Modern Recipes for Every Day by Anurag Aggarwal is out now, published by Quadrille and priced at £22 (hardback)

"At San Carlo, Christmas is an occasion to savour, a celebration of warmth and indulgent joy"

A MENU MADE FOR CELEBRATION

This year’s Christmas Fayre menu, available for lunch or dinner at just £59.95 per person, showcases the very best of Italian dining with a festive flourish. It’s a feast of flavour and craftsmanship – where every course feels like a small celebration in itself.

Begin with an array of antipasti designed to delight. There’s Gamberoni Luciana –king prawns sautéed in garlic, chilli, and tomato, finished with a touch of cream – or Mozzarella in Carrozza, golden-fried and perfectly crisp, served with a fragrant basil and tomato sauce. Those who love something earthy and indulgent will find Crostone Funghi e Tartufo irresistible, with truffled mushrooms and Grana Padano atop toasted Altamura bread.

For your main course, the choice is as varied as it is luxurious. Enjoy Branzino – pan-fried sea bass in lime sauce – or Tacchino con Ripieno di Castagne, tender turkey breast with chestnut stuffing and pancetta-wrapped chipolatas, capturing the essence of a classic Christmas roast with Italian flair. There’s also Suprema di Pollo Principessa with mushrooms and asparagus, Salmone Prosecco e Gamberetti served in a Prosecco and prawn sauce, or rich Tagliatelle Porcini with chestnut pasta, porcini mushrooms, and black truffle.

And for those who prefer a little indulgence, Medaglioni al Pepe – fillet steak medallions in green peppercorn sauce – offers an elegant touch of decadence, the perfect centrepiece for a festive feast. Every dish is served with seasonal vegetables and rosemary potatoes, bringing warmth, colour, and balance to the table.

Dessert is where San Carlo truly shines. The Panettone Bread & Butter Pudding with limoncello and vanilla ice cream offers comfort with a citrus twist. For chocolate lovers, the Ferrero Rocher Cake – layers of chocolate and hazelnut mousse wrapped in praline – is pure indulgence. Or perhaps the Tiramisu and Panna Cotta ai Frutti di Bosco, with their classic Italian flavours, are the perfect finale. Vegan desserts are also available, ensuring everyone can end their meal on a sweet note.

WHY SAN CARLO IS THE PLACE TO CELEBRATE

San Carlo has always been about more than food. It’s about experience – the kind of experience that makes an ordinary evening feel like an event. During the festive season, that magic multiplies.

The atmosphere is unmistakably Italian – vibrant, stylish, yet welcoming. It’s where you can enjoy a glass of fizz before dinner, linger over espresso after dessert, and feel part of something joyful from the moment you arrive. Service is as polished as it is personal, delivered with that signature San Carlo flair: attentive, generous, and always a little bit theatrical.

Whether it’s an intimate dinner for two, a lively lunch with friends, or a company celebration, San Carlo’s team knows how to make each occasion feel effortless. Every detail is considered, every guest is made to feel special, and every visit feels like a celebration.

And for those who appreciate great value as much as great taste, the Christmas Fayre menu strikes a perfect balance. At £59.95 per person, it offers refined, multi-course dining crafted from premium ingredients – an indulgent experience that still feels accessible, with something for every palate and every pocket.

THE SPIRIT OF ITALIAN HOSPITALITY

What makes San Carlo unique at Christmas isn’t just the food or the festive décor – it’s the spirit. This is a family-led collection of

restaurants, founded by Chairman Carlo Distefano and led by his son, CEO Marcello Distefano. Together, they’ve built a legacy of Italian hospitality that blends authenticity with sophistication. Each restaurant reflects that ethos: a place where quality, care, and conviviality come together beautifully. It’s that mix of energy and elegance – of polished service and heartfelt warmth – that transforms a San Carlo meal into a true celebration.

MAKE IT A SAN CARLO CHRISTMAS

Planning your celebration couldn’t be easier. Whether it’s a table for two or a larger group booking, San Carlo’s team will tailor your experience to perfection. From festive lunches to glamorous dinners, dietary requests to décor details, everything is handled with style and ease.

Gather your family, your colleagues, your oldest friends – the ones you’ve been meaning to see all year. Dress up, raise a glass, and let San Carlo take care of the rest. Because the best memories of the season are made around a table filled with laughter, warmth, and exquisite food.

This Christmas, celebrate in true Italian style. Celebrate with San Carlo – where every guest is family, every dish is a gift, and every moment is made to shine.

A star is born

West Sussex has a new player on the wine map. Abingworth Vineyard has just dropped its debut vintage: a bright, zesty Sauvignon Blanc and a pale, juicy Pinot Noir Rosé – both full of promise, personality, and year-round appeal.

Everyone’s involved, everyone’s muddy, everyone’s got an opinion on pruning.

And just like the family behind them, the wines are brimming with character. They’re made to celebrate joy, creativity, and life’s small pleasures – whether that’s raising a glass with friends or stealing five precious minutes of peace and quiet. Use code ABSOLUTELY10 for 10% o your order.

GOSFIELD HALL, ESSEX

This stunning Georgian manor house, once a royal palace, is a gem of the Essex countryside, and when you see the pictureperfect surroundings and grand reception rooms that this exclusive-use wedding venue has to offer, you will understand why! From the Marquis of Buckingham’s former Ballroom, an exquisite setting for the wedding breakfast, to Queen Charlotte’s oak-panelled gallery which comes complete with a 120-foot aisle, there are so many exquisite rooms to use on your wedding day. Dream setting

Looking for the perfect venue for your big day? Here are five favourites in Essex

LLeez Priory

leez-priory.co.uk

eez Priory is a Tudor manor house of striking elegance nestled in the Essex countryside, offering exclusive-use weddings in a setting of lakes, terraced gardens, and peaceful courtyards. The house is built around a central courtyard, which often becomes a focal point for photographs, cocktail receptions or simply a moment of still between the bustle of the wedding day.

Couples can be married indoors in suitably grand rooms with period features, or outdoors amid the gardens. Accommodation is provided on site (bedrooms in the house), which makes it very practical for guests. One of its strengths is that it feels both historic and romantic while being well set up for modern weddings: services, catering, ceremony licensing, and support staff are all experienced.

If you want a venue with grandeur, character, and that countryside-romance, Leez Priory delivers beautifully.

HYLANDS HOUSE
The grand staircase is the perfect backdrop to a grand occasion

Hylands Estate

hylandsestate.co.uk

Hylands Estate is a beautifully restored Georgian mansion set within 574 acres of landscaped parkland, giving couples sweeping lawns, established trees, lakes and formal landscaping as the backdrop to their wedding. It offers a mixture of indoor and outdoor possibilities: the mansion has elegant rooms for receptions, while the extensive grounds are ideal for outdoor ceremonies, marquee weddings or garden drinks.

The scale of Hylands means you can have plenty of guests without feeling crowded, and its mixture of grandeur and green space gives lots of room for creative styling (lighting, flowers, movement). The estate is also well known for its heritage and visual appeal, which photographers love, particularly at sunset or in those hours of soft light. For couples who want something refined but natural, stately yet relaxed, Hylands Estate strikes a lovely balance.

Hedingham Castle

Hhedinghamcastle.co.uk

edingham Castle is one of the most atmospheric venues in Essex: a Norman keep with sprawling grounds, ramparts, lakes, and gardens that evoke fairytale romance. Much of the charm comes from its medieval architecture, including the Banqueting Hall for ceremonies or the Tilting Lawn for outdoor vows, offering dramatic views and a sense of timeless setting. There’s also a Georgian-style House and Ballroom Marquee that can host larger receptions, so the venue is flexible for both mid-size and more generous guest lists. It combines history, vertical scale (tower, walls), and natural beauty, making it perfect for weddings that want a blend of grand, dramatic backdrop and outdoor charm. Also, the onsite accommodation is useful for guests who don’t want to travel after the evening celebrations.

Blake Hall o ers something more rustic-romantic: restored 17th-century barns, a Saddlery for outdoor style ceremonies, walled gardens, and private cottages for bridal parties. The barns are light and airy, with attractive oak beams and characterful features, letting you lean into a relaxed but beautiful vibe.

The Essex Barn at Blake Hall can seat up to about 150 guests – enough for a substantial wedding without scale becoming overwhelming. The grounds provide lovely settings for photos, whether that is wildflower gardens, mature trees, or historic garden walls. Part of the appeal is that it feels intimate, warm, and full of texture – rustic touches, natural materials – but you’re not sacrificing comfort: good amenities, well managed spaces, and spaces to prepare.

If your wedding vision includes cosyelegant, barn charm, and countryside intimacy, Blake Hall is well suited.

Braxted Park

braxtedpark.co.uk

Braxted Park is a grand Georgian country house set in large parkland, surrounded by ancient trees, formal gardens, lakes and elegant ancillary buildings. The house gives you sumptuous indoor rooms, ornate features, stately architecture and charm, while the grounds allow for outdoor ceremonies, photographs, and marquee options. There are onsite accommodation options (bridal cottages etc.), meaning guests can stay close by rather than travel.

Its ambiance is one of classic English country glamour: think long tree-lined drives, views, excellent landscaping, and an ability to host both large receptions and more intimate gatherings depending on your plans. For couples who want elegance, visual drama, formal tradition, but also the flexibility of outside/inside, park/garden, Braxted Park is one of Essex’s top heritage wedding venues.

o pain, no gain, they say. Well they’re wrong about microblading, unless you count the two weekends a year where you might look like you’ve overdone it slightly on the brows. Because there’s certainly no physical pain – and the gains are significant. Before I took the plunge, my brows were terrible. Sparse, wonky, messy, asymmetrical. Still, I was afraid of permanently transforming them into dark, angular, fierce-looking arches – but Karen Betts is not about that at all. Her approach to treatment is to replicate a natural look, and she’ll tell you that directly. In fact, she’ll refuse to give you what she deems the wrong brows. So what is microblading? Essentially, it’s a tattoo. But microblading uses a blade-shaped tool with a row of tiny, barely visible needles to create hair-like strokes along your brows while depositing pigment into your skin. Traditional tattoos use ink, while microblading is done with safer pigment. These fade over time without changing colour. After an initial session my brows look quite intense (the awkward weekend) but tone down quickly, and a follow up appointment two months later ensures that results will last for about a year. “I’ll just book you in for this time next year then shall I?” asks Karen’s assistant. The answer’s a firm yes. I’m never going back to terrible brows.

Through the Keyhole

Absolutely explores a luxury project in Essex that highlights the work of Turnkey Contractors

Founded in 2021, Turnkey Contractors, the luxury build, construction and development specialists, creates unique and distinctive housing projects across London and the Home Counties.

The recently completed Tankerville Drive property in Essex is Turnkey’s latest project. The objective was to sensitively modernise and extend the existing property into a light, bright and modern family space – and it does just that.

The 1950s bungalow was in a dilapidated state and required modernisation. Internally, the brief focused on reconfiguring the ground floor layout to enhance the sense of space, light and flow throughout the home. The final result is an exceptional property that includes unique exterior timber cladding and celebrates the expansive use of glass to let the light in and create a stunning open plan living space.

The design team included Mitchell and Corti architects and Turnkey Contractors whose skills, expertise and attention to detail are showcased throughout the project. Kristian Brown, founder and Managing Director of Turnkey Contractors, discusses the project and key features used to create this luxury family home.

WOW FROM THE FIRST GLANCE

From the property’s exterior, you are immediately greeted by the eye-catching and modern wooden timber cladding and contrasting pink and white render. The unique finishes are effectively used to create a one of a kind property that instantly creates a modern and artistic impression. The charred larch timber cladding was incorporated into the structural design of the extension paneling. The cladding creates a protective, water-repellent layer which improves the wood’s resistance to rot and weathering – effectively extending its lifespan whilst providing a stylish finish.

USE OF GLASS

Thanks to the glass interiors championed during design phases, as you first enter Tankerville Drive, the open plan kitchen and dining area welcomes you with a wealth of natural light and gorgeous views of the green garden. The views are courtesy of the sky lights, large glass patio doors and bespoke windows to fit snuggly with the slanted roof, the living and dining area feels light and airy as it flows seamlessly into the garden space.

The ground floor remodel and extension also boasts several effectively placed

windows to create pockets of light and celebrate natural sunlight and the garden views at every opportunity. Glass is increasingly becoming the go-to for creating luxury and spacious homes, especially for smaller projects or those with tricky angles and spaces. Its ability to reflect light and create seamless transitions brings an effortless sense of openness, maximising every inch without compromising on style. When considering the rebuild and extension, Kristian and the team used a vast amount of glass to complement the open plan kitchen and dining area and create a large area that felt like the true heart of the home.

OPEN SPACES

Perhaps the most dramatic transformation comes in the dining areas, where a vaulted ceiling and bespoke angled rear window redefine the home’s sense of volume and openness. The soaring

ceiling creates a remarkable sense of space, while the angled glazing invites natural light to flood the interior.

One of the main advantages to opening up and combining living areas is that spaces can be flooded with natural light. This feature required a unique sequence during the construction stages, particularly in coordinating with the ceiling installation; however, the result is an interior space that feels expansive, bright and architecturally dynamic.

UNIQUE AND MODERN FINISHES

The secret to open plan living is ensuring each space retains its own character and purpose, whilst the overall interior design feels coherent and connected.

The kitchen was designed to embody both function and sophistication and encapsulates the tranquil feeling echoed throughout the property. The

bright landscape acts as a key feature throughout the space, enhancing the light in the space, and the quartz kitchen island effectively provides a luxury division between the kitchen and dining area.

Tankerville Drive showcases highquality finishes throughout, capturing a true sense of luxury. The artistic character of the exterior is thoughtfully echoed inside, creating a seamless and cohesive design. The reimagined family bathroom features hand-painted tiles, each with subtle variations in tone and texture that bring depth and individuality to the space. This artisanal detail softens the crisp whites, clean lines, and modern elements of the remodel, striking a perfect balance between contemporary elegance and inviting warmth.

This project represents Turnkey Contractors at their very best: innovative, meticulous, and respectful of both client needs and architectural integrity. What was once a neglected relic of the 1950s has been reborn as a light-filled, spacious, and resilient family home.

With every detail carefully considered, from the sustainability of the charred larch cladding to the elegance of hand-painted bathroom tiles, the property exemplifies how Turnkey brings artistry, vision, and technical expertise together. It is not simply a house that has been modernised, but a home that has been reimagined.

Cotswold CHRISTMAS

Top advice on how to get your home looking the part this festive season

With the festive season fast approaching, preparing your home for family gatherings, friends, and celebrations can be both exciting and overwhelming. To help you get ready, we spoke to Lisa Coppin, Chief Creative O cer at The Cotswold Company, who shares her expert tips on everything from choosing key furniture pieces to adding those essential decorative touches for the perfect Christmas atmosphere.

Q Christmas is often the busiest time of year for our homes. Where should people start when preparing for the festive season?

A A house filled with family and friends at Christmas is wonderful, but it often means most rooms are in constant use. It’s a good idea to make a list a few months in advance of what needs attention in each space. These might be simple decorative touches or more substantial updates, such as a new mattress or sofa bed for the guest bedroom, extra chairs to accommodate everyone, or even a small kitchen island to help with food preparation.

Q Many families think about upgrading their dining table ahead of Christmas. What should they look for in an extending design?

A Proportion is key. Measure your space carefully and think about how the table will feel when fully extended, making sure there is enough room for chairs to slide out comfortably and for guests to move around with ease. Mechanics are just as important. A well-made extending table should feel solid whether open or closed. Look for precision engineering, with runners that glide smoothly and extension

leaves that fit neatly without wobbling. Ideally, the leaves should store within the table itself, as in The Cotswold Company’s Inglesham Whitewash Oak and Chester Pure White extending tables. Crafted from solid wood or high-quality veneers, these tables age beautifully, withstand the knocks of family life, and will carry you through countless Christmas lunches.

Q Overnight guests are another big part of Christmas. How can we create a welcoming space for them?

A Comfort is the most important factor. A high-quality mattress can transform a guest’s experience and the di erence between a restless night and waking refreshed, ready to join the festivities. At The Cotswold Company, we often remind customers that investing in a good mattress for a guest bedroom is as worthwhile as one for your own bed. Made in the UK, our mattress range blends comfort with craftsmanship. Customers can choose from the British Wool Collection, the more luxurious Pure Natural Collection, or the Simply Cotswold Collection, all handcrafted with British wool and suitable for a range of preferences and budgets. Beyond the mattress, small touches matter: quality bed linen, a stack of pillows, a cosy throw, and a bedside lamp. Even in smaller homes, a well-made sofa bed can work wonders, turning a living room into

“Layer in seasonal details that make guests feel instantly welcome”

a restful retreat while remaining stylish. This year, the Fletcher sofa-bed forms part of The Cotswold Company’s express delivery collection, so there’s still plenty of time to get one before Christmas.

Q Once the essentials are in place, how can people add those magical festive touches?

A Layer in seasonal details that make guests feel instantly welcome. Stockings on the fireplace bring out everyone’s inner child, while scatter cushions in rich tones, tactile fabrics, or subtle festive motifs transform sofas and armchairs. Soft lighting makes a huge di erence. Lanterns with flickering candles, real or LED, dotted around hallways or grouped in sitting-room corners create a warm, inviting glow. Focus on a few key areas rather than decorating every corner. The hallway sets the tone when guests arrive, the sitting room is where people relax, and the dining table becomes the star of the show on Christmas Day.

Q Finally, what’s your number one piece of advice for anyone preparing their home for Christmas?

A Prioritise comfort first. Hosting at Christmas should feel e ortless, with plenty of seating, a comfortable night’s sleep for guests, and thoughtful touches that make people smile. By investing in key pieces

like a dining table or mattress, you’re not just preparing for one festive season, but creating a home that can host memories for many years to come. Once the essentials are in place, you can have fun layering in all the magical decorative touches that make Christmas feel truly special.

SERVICE CULTURE

Extra-curricular elements of school life – including CCF and DofE –offer adventure but also deliver skills and qualities that are invaluable for future life and career. We ask three independent schools how they develop young people through a culture of service

MALVERN COLLEGE

Malvern College

At Malvern College, service is not simply an extra-curricular offering, but a defining element of the educational ethos. As a full boarding school and home-away-from-home for pupils aged 13 to 18, the Worcestershire school works to create a supportive environment where young people can explore, commit to, and grow through service at a pivotal stage in their development. The diverse community includes pupils from around the world – many are from services families – and this global perspective enriches community engagement and adds depth and resonance to programmes.

From the moment they reach Remove (Year 10), every Malvern pupil participates in either the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) or the Combined Cadet Force (CCF), with many choosing both to get a breadth of challenges and experiences. The DofE programme, led by Head of Outdoor Pursuits Jay Watts, includes both Silver and Gold awards and offers opportunities for physical challenge, community volunteering and expedition-based learning.

The CCF at Malvern provides a structured, skills-based environment

encompassing the Army, RAF and Royal Marines sections. This programme supports character development through leadership tasks, outdoor training and teamwork. And it’s exciting, too: recent introductions include flight simulator technology for RAF cadets, laser rifle training on the neighbouring Nine Acres grounds and a Bronze Award at the 2025 Cambrian Patrol. For two consecutive years, a Malvern CCF pupil has also held the prestigious title of Lord Lieutenant of Worcestershire’s cadet.

Malvern College says these experiences offer lasting value. Pupils build confidence, develop initiative and learn to lead and support one another – qualities that serve them well in further education and future careers and help them stand out from other applicants. Parents frequently speak to the transformative impact of these service opportunities, recognising their role in shaping mature, capable young adults.

Beyond DofE and CCF, Malvern’s broader culture of service is embedded in weekly routines. Each Wednesday afternoon is dedicated to partnerships and volunteering, all of which are entirely pupil led. College pupils assist in local schools, lead digital safety initiatives and take music and performance into care homes. They also

engage in long-standing international partnerships, such as the OSCAR Foundation in Mumbai and sustainable farming initiatives in Peru.

Charity work is a vibrant part of house life, with fundraising events supporting causes ranging from Cancer Research UK and Mind to the local Malvern Hills Foodbank. These elements of service and giving back often stem from personal connections. Recognising the scope of this work, the school is currently appointing a Head of Community Partnerships and Service to coordinate and further develop opportunities.

Wellington College

At Wellington, hands-on service is central to its Global Citizenship character development programme. Every Wednesday afternoon, all students take part in community-based activities – from CCF and DofE to supporting the work of care homes. These projects are led by a dedicated team of specialist teachers and embedded into the timetable.

Every Fourth Form pupil participates in CCF via weekly activities centred around the Salamanca Shield, an interhouse competition based on military and adventurous training skills and culminating in a five-day training camp. Many Fifth and Sixth Form pupils then continue on with CCF. Large numbers also participate in DofE – right up to Gold in the Lower Sixth. This year, 196 students are taking DofE Bronze in Third Form, 24 are doing Silver in Fourth Form and 18 are completing Gold in Lower Sixth.

“Our inbuilt service culture develops empathy, leadership and a sense of global responsibility,” says Head of Global Citizenship and CAS Coordinator, Rebecca Parks. “Many alumni go on to take up volunteering roles as a result of their experiences.” Wellington is mindful of University of Northampton research indicating the significant positive impact of CCF on young people – both in improving school performance and in boosting future career prospects.

“ We listen to pupil voices and empower them to take action on causes close to their hearts”
WELLINGTON COLLEGE STUDENTS

Wellington’s history – it was founded as a school for the orphaned sons of army officers – means the spirit of service is embedded in its culture. Both parents and the school see huge value in helping young people to build strengths through service. Community initiatives and service leadership roles also provide an opportunity to build networking skills, uncover interests and skills, and get a taste of different roles and types of work. Students regularly draw on these real-world experiences when applying for work experience, university places and first jobs. Being active through service also develops crucial transferable skills – including resilience, adaptability, leadership and communicating with people from different backgrounds.

The school’s long-running partnership with local LAN special needs school Carwarden House has built both friendships and a vibrant activities programme, with pupils fundraising to deliver treats such as a Thorpe Park trip. Many such community initiatives are pupil led. For instance, there was a recent toy drive to support Afghan refugees. “We listen to pupil voices and empower them to take action on causes close to their hearts,” says Rebecca. “This includes the Cerebral Palsy Trust, which was established by pupil David Loftus and his school peers. Pupil members recently organised a Christmas Inspire Day to celebrate the enormous progress they have made.”

Wellington’s Peace and Conflict Institute supports the charity Care4Calais and 27 pupils recently travelled to France to spend two days supporting their work in refugee camps. Other initiatives include pupils and staff teaching Latin to students at nearby Edgebarrow School, and outdoor activity sessions for local primary school children.

Oakham School

At Oakham School, service is embedded into the school calendar, with extra-curricular activities included as part of the weekly timetable, plus weekends of activity, residentials and expeditions. With these regular opportunities beyond the academic sphere, Oakham aims to deliver the holistic education that prepares pupils for life beyond school. “Our service options of DofE, CCF, and Voluntary Action cultivate not just well-rounded students, but compassionate and capable young people prepared to serve and lead in a complex world,” says Oakham Director of Adventure, Matty Powell.

The Rutland school’s Connected Curriculum weaves together academic,

“These moments of challenge help our pupils grow personally and face obstacles with greater confidence”

pastoral and co-curricular experiences, with pupils actively encouraged to develop five essential life skills – Communication, Social, Self-management, Research, and Thinking. Service options offer the perfect place to develop all five. A team supports Matty Powell in delivering the service and adventurous learning programme, with qualified coordinators across DofE, CCF and VA, plus a specialist Adventurous Learning Co-ordinator.

Pupils in Years 7 and 8 are introduced early to the values and benefits of service and adventure through charity initiatives such as the Harvest Challenge, bake sales, charity bike ride and annual adventure camps. In Year 9, all pupils have a formal introduction to CCF, DofE and VA via a carousel of activities and experiences across the three terms. At the end of the year, they also experience an expedition, which they can count as their Bronze DofE Expedition.

From Year 10, pupils can choose whether to progress through the Silver and Gold Awards – with canoeing, cycling, and sailing, in addition to walking. They also have the flexibility to continue with CCF and VA by choosing all three service options during their weekly Activities sessions. This flexible pathway continues in Year 12. Even if pupils have never done DofE at Silver or Bronze levels, they can choose to complete their Gold DofE during this year, with an option to complete a CCF-organised expedition to Norway.

At each stage of the DofE awards journey, pupils are mentored by trained staff and older pupils who develop their leadership skills through its Young Leaders programme. CCF is an equally popular

option from Year 10 onwards, with pupils participating in its programme of training and adventure via real-world challenges and unforgettable experiences – from fieldcraft exercises to annual camps.

Voluntary Action has seen a big growth in popularity, with pupils participating in an invigorated programme of volunteering. “We lead initiatives that nurture a culture of service, teamwork and emotional intelligence. Our projects range from intergenerational storytelling with dementia patients to sustainability efforts like uniform recycling,” says Head of Voluntary Action Monica Fernandez.

The Oakham School Foundation Project adds an entrepreneurial edge to service culture. Every Sixth Former is challenged to pitch, fundraise, and deliver projects that make a tangible difference to school life, working in connection with the Development Office. From installing solar lighting and restoring the local canal path to creating a time capsule legacy, the winning teams develop enterprise, collaboration and leadership skills to enrich school life and leave a legacy.

Oakham sees the encouragement of service activities as bringing a wide range of benefits. “These moments of challenge help our pupils grow personally and face obstacles with greater confidence,” says Matty. “Leadership opportunities also play a crucial role in strengthening communication skills and self-assurance.” Parent feedback on the many service elements of school life is overwhelmingly positive, he adds. “Parents frequently highlight the character-building aspects of these programmes, especially their impact on resilience, leadership and responsibility.”

Supplementing your child's education at Cresconova Labs

In the heart of the capital, Cresconova Labs is transforming what supplemental education can look like. It is not tutoring, nor standard enrichment – it is an environment where children discover the joy of creating, experimenting, and bringing ideas to life.

As Artificial Intelligence and other technologies reshape our world, the qualities that matter most – creativity, imagination, collaboration, and resilience – become even more powerful when paired with the right tools. At Cresconova Labs, advanced technologies are not ends in themselves, but catalysts, helping children turn ideas into reality through hands-on, collaborative projects that spark curiosity, build confidence, and nurture future innovators. Picture a group of children huddled together designing capsules and determined

REIMAGINING LEARNING FOR THE AI AGE

to keep their “egg-stronaut” safe. They measure angles, calculate force, test materials, and debate design choices, all while racing against the clock to refine their capsules. At launch, the staircase becomes their proving ground. Some eggs land intact, others not, but each outcome sparks laughter, fresh hypotheses, and another round of iteration. What seems like play is actually deep learning in action – strengthened by resilience, teamwork, and inventive thinking.

In another room, students are just as intensely focused, turning fabric remnants into haute couture, more than just an accessory – designed with precision, crafted with a focus on texture and form, creating a one-of-a-kind piece focused on environmental responsibility. Students explore history through textiles, apply geometry in pattern-making, and express individuality through colour and form. The session ends with a joyful runway moment, but beneath the fashion design lies critical thinking, imagination, and a consciousness of sustainability.

From rockets to runways, every activity at Cresconova Labs reflects a multidisciplinary

approach, showing children that true innovation lives at the intersections. The tools – resin printers, laser cutters, robotics, AR/VR – are just the beginning; the true outcome is mastery, when knowledge across disciplines converges into creativity.

“At Cresconova Labs, creativity is not the opposite of rigor; it is the highest form of it, preparing children not just to consume technology but to create it,” says Christine Braun, Cresconova’s Chief Creative Officer, formerly Director of REEF Makerspace, Harvard University.

While children are immersed in these experiences, parents are not forgotten. A calm, light-filled lounge offers coffee, curated books, and work-friendly spaces. For many, it becomes a mini-retreat, a welcome pause before the rhythm of family life resumes.

Changing LANDSCAPE

How might the Autumn Budget affect the West Essex housing market? Felicity Walker, head of office at Savills Loughton, discusses the big talking points

There has been much talk in the media about possible tax changes that could potentially impact the property market should they be made policy in the upcoming Autumn Budget. Replacing Stamp Duty with an annual tax on properties valued over £500,000 and charging capital gains tax on properties worth over £1.5m appear to have caught most attention.

Crucially, at the time of writing, nothing has been agreed and it’s still unclear how – and most importantly, if – these ideas will translate into policy. Whether you’re thinking of buying or selling, seeking independent tax advice on how any potential changes could impact your finances is absolutely essential. Understanding the property landscape is also important.

At Savills we have an industry-leading research team that keeps our clients up to date with latest developments. The property market in West Essex – the likes of Loughton, Buckhurst Hill, Epping and surrounding villages –remains resilient. According to our latest research the area has seen a 2% rise in average property prices over the last 12 months, which somewhat bucks the national trend.

The market is not without its nuances. But competitively priced, well-presented homes are generating multiple offers, with those between £750,000 and £2m in highest demand. As usual we have seen most interest from buyers relocating from London, alongside those families already living locally who are considering their next move. Looking ahead, further cuts to interest rates and loosened mortgage criteria could help ease some market concerns – but there’s no doubt that the continued speculation over the proposed overhaul of stamp duty and other property taxes has knocked some confidence.

Buyers and sellers have been left trying to make sense of what different measures might mean for them without any guarantee of what is going to prevail. Nevertheless, there remains an undercurrent of demand from needs based buyers and those eager to capitalise on potentially lower values.

Of course, we won’t know the exact outcome until the Chancellor makes her announcement on 26th November. Whatever happens the market is likely to remain finely balanced as we head into the new year. A degree of compromise will be required from both buyers and sellers.

James Hunt, co-founder of Durden & Hunt, on how they can help landlords with the Renters Rights Bill on the horizon

The property market rarely stands still and the lettings sector is no exception.

With the Renters Rights Bill progressing, speculation has continued to swirl around what the final version may look like and how it could reshape the relationship between landlords, tenants and agents.

One of the most debated proposals is the potential removal of fixed term tenancies in favour of periodic agreements. While this could increase flexibility for tenants, it also raises questions for landlords about certainty of income and long term planning. Likewise, changes to Section 21, often referred to as “no-fault evictions”, may place greater emphasis on landlords demonstrating fair and transparent reasons for ending a tenancy.

compliance and strong communication between all parties. The days of casual or under prepared landlords are drawing to a close. Those who work with experienced, fully regulated agents will find themselves far better placed to adapt, protect their investments and maintain positive tenant relationships.

For some existing or potential landlords, these proposed changes may appear daunting. Yet in reality, they simply highlight the growing need for professionalism,

At Durden & Hunt, we view these shifts not as obstacles but as opportunities. By staying ahead of the curve, ensuring full compliance and offering strategic guidance, we help landlords navigate uncertainty with confidence. Tenants also benefit from the reassurance of working with an agent committed to clarity, fairness and high standards. Whatever the eventual outcome of the Renters Rights Bill, one thing is certain: the lettings landscape will continue to evolve. With our proven expertise and focus on client care, Durden & Hunt stands ready to guide landlords and tenants alike through the changes ahead.

JAMES HUNT

The Robin CancerTrust

The founder and CEO of the Essex-based charity has been getting his message across why everyone is talking about…

Toby Freeman is a proud Essex local whose story is as moving as it is inspiring.

After losing his younger brother Robin to germ cell cancer at just 24, Toby and his family set out from their Colchester kitchen table to raise awareness and save lives. Over a decade later, The Robin Cancer Trust has grown into the UK’s leading germ cell cancer awareness charity, reaching millions of young people nationwide with bold campaigns and vital support.

Their mission is to stop young adults dying from testicular, ovarian and germ cell cancer. They do this through raising awareness with their life-saving cancer campaigns, engaging young adults with digital education programmes, and empowering the germ cell cancer community across the UK.

A case in point was one of their recent fundraising events. The Pants to Cancer Walk, which took place on Sunday 21st September, is an annual event that encourages participants to wear their underwear over their clothes and proudly shout “Pants to Cancer!”, all while raising vital funds and awareness for testicular and ovarian germ cell cancers.

Now in its fifth year, the Pants to Cancer walk is a fun, family-friendly event. The 7-mile route takes participants from Clacton Pier to Walton Pier, with the option to complete a 14-mile round trip for those up for a bigger challenge. Everyone is encouraged to wear colourful and crazy pants, knickers, boxers or even bloomers

over their outfits, creating a fun and eyecatching spectacle to raise awareness of a serious cause. It will be back in 2026.

Toby is also doing his own Big Ballsy Challenge, which has run from March to the next marathon in April 2026, to complete 500km. “Testicular cancer took my brother,” Toby says, “and now I’m taking on marathons, ultramarathons, and Hadrian’s Wall in a giant testicle costume to raise £240,000 and save lives with The Robin Cancer Trust.” The run is part of a year of different challenges Toby has faced up to in order to raise awareness and vital funds.

“Our hope has always been to prevent another family from going through what we

did – so I have dedicated my life to reaching as many young people as possible with our life-saving cancer awareness, education, and support services,” Toby adds. “Every year 2,400 men are diagnosed with testicular cancer in the UK – but it’s 95% curable if caught early. I am on a mission to get the UK #TalkingBollocks with my Big Ballsy Challenge – raising vital funds and awareness that will ultimately save lives.”

In this issue where we talk about spending freely on Christmas gifts, please do save some funds to send the way of this amazing Essex charity.
