LETTER Editor’s

ABSOLUTELY’S April issue highlights

My favourite book as a kid was Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. I just loved the vivid descriptions of all the goodies, which were brought to life with the

Gene Wilder-starring film (showing my age).

As an advertisement, it worked wonders on me. Every time I ventured into a sweet shop, I just had to treat myself to a brand new chocolate bar, influenced by whatever wrapper took my fancy. As I got older, the relationship became a little strained. I became obsessed with my fitness, so for me chocolate was a no-go.

It wasn't long before I realised the folly of my ways. You see, chocolate is good for you, in small doses of course – but when it comes to Easter, just like the Christmas over indulgence, I reckon those restrictions should always be put to one side. So I had lots of fun sampling five of the best chocolate shops Essex has to offer, before sitting back (and digesting) to write about some of the top events coming our way over the school holidays.

There may not be a crazy entrepreneur called Willy Wonka leading us astray, but there's plenty out there to leave a chocolate-smeared smile on your face. Enjoy the issue!

Few plays have captured the American Dream’s allure and devastation as powerfully as Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman. This April, a fresh touring production of the Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece brings Willy Loman’s tragic odyssey to audiences here in Essex at the Palace Theatre from 8-12 April, led by esteemed actor David Hayman. With a stellar cast and direction from Andy Arnold, one of Scotland’s most influential theatre figures, this revival promises to be a must-see event. As audiences brace themselves for an intense exploration of family, ambition, and self-delusion, Miller’s timeless play finds new relevance in an age where economic uncertainty and the pressures of success weigh heavier than ever.

David Hayman, best known for his roles in The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas, Dad’s Army, and Trial & Retribution, steps into the role of Willy Loman, a salesman on the brink of emotional and financial collapse. With his belief in personal charm and ambition crumbling, Willy grapples with the harsh realities of a life built on illusion. Hayman, a seasoned performer, brings both gravitas an vulnerability to this iconic role. “This play is a true masterpiece - raw, timeless, and deeply moving,” he says.

“I’m thrilled to bring Arthur Miller’s powerful vision to life on stage.” The production boasts a great supporting cast, including Beth Marshall as Linda Loman, Daniel Cahill as Bi , and Michael Wallace as Happy.

DAVID HAYMAN IN REHEARSALS
“I manifested my husband through a picture on a vision board”

Feel the

power

Dreaming of that perfect partner or home? Make it a reality through manifestation. Essex-born Francesca Amber explains how

Ispent a year trying to woo my now wife. That year involved many desperate acts to try and get her to realise the folly of her ways (she once said I had no chance with her), and I have to admit I got pretty down about the whole thing. I could have done with Francesca Amber to be in my world during that time.

The Essex-born author is host of the UK’s number one selfimprovement podcast (with over 11 million downloads), helping those who are time and energy poor discover the law of attraction and manifest their goals. Before all this, however, she had to wait even longer to get together with her partner than even poor old me.

“I did online dating many years ago and put in very specific requirements into the search filters. This was back in the day before swiping!” Francesca laughs as she starts to recount the story. “I only had one result come up. It was a very, very tall man standing next to a yacht, and as soon as I saw him, I thought oh my goodness that’s

my husband! I messaged him but he never replied. At the end of the month, I actually contacted the dating website themselves and asked if I could have his details, but they said no as it was a breach of data protection.

“I printed out his picture and put it on my vision board where it stayed for two and a half years, and two and a half years later my friend was walking down the street in London and saw the tallest man she’d ever seen. She proceeded to do something she’s never done for me before, and hasn’t since. She goes up to him and asks if he would go on a blind date with her friend, and he says yes. We met just over a week later in Covent Garden. Just before we met up he asked if we could exchange Facebook profiles so it’s not a completely blind date… and that’s when I see it. His profile picture is exactly the same! I did end up telling him on that first date that I thought he was my future husband and, sure enough, six months later we were engaged. I now have an entire masterclass teaching people how to manifest love.”

The mention of a ‘vision board’ catches my attention, which leads to Francesca

explaining how she came to be a specialist in manifestation in the first place. “Around 2005 I discovered the book The Secret and the whole concept of the Law of Attraction Changed My Life,” she says. “I started a YouTube channel as a hobby on the side of my then business, which was a beauty salon in Islington, London. I would share lessons in the Law of Attraction and how it was working in my life every week, but it wasn’t until nearly eight years later it became a podcast and my full-time job.

“I think the reason I wanted to share the Law of Attraction with other people,” she adds, “was because I was so unhappy in my life in so many ways, and I saw that I was able to completely change it using the Law of Attraction. I was able to quit my job and start my own business, to buy a salon in London, to buy an apartment, and then buy a second home in the countryside. As I mentioned, I manifested my husband through a picture on a vision board. There wasn’t any area of your life where you couldn’t use it. I just wanted to help others who maybe didn’t have the resources to have

therapy or expensive life coaches. I wanted to show them that they could do it themselves.”

It seems as if Francesca was on to something. “I launched my podcast in the depths of the lockdown in 2020. My podcast was always an extension of what I have been doing on YouTube, which was talking purely about the Law of Attraction as I wanted people to feel empowered at a time when we were so limited. Some of my best episodes have been the ones that have empowered people to realise they can change their own lives without the need to go on an expensive course or do years of therapy. People love it when they can take immediate action and see fast results.”

Manifestation has cropped up a couple of times in this piece, but what exactly is it?

“We are manifesting all of the time whether we know it or not and so all of the people, circumstances, opportunities and places in your life are there because you have had repeated thoughts on that vibration,” she explains. “So, if you want to consciously improve any area of your life, you simply need to change the vibration of your thoughts. Simply what you think about and what you embody will bring things into your life.”

Francesca is the living embodiment of such an approach. She grew up in Canvey Island

– “I was a very horsey girl,” she smiles about spending all her time at stables – and today seems to have the perfect family life. “It’s taken a while to get here,” she points out, “but I finally feel I’ve arrived at a place where I have a really good balance between a fulfilling career that I love and quality, present time with my daughters. I am currently in the phase where my youngest daughters are in the last few months before they start school in September and so I am soaking up every last moment of Church Toddler groups, picking out food in the supermarket with them and all those preschool things. We have a good mix of family time and are privileged to enjoy family holidays.”

September is also exciting for another reason. “My first book with Penguin comes out in September, which I cannot wait to share with the world,” Francesca grins. “It is something I’ve been very passionate to talk about, but was turned down by several publishers for being too niche. I am also speaking at several events, which I always find so rewarding as I get to meet many of my listeners face-to-face. Personally, 2025 is the year that I celebrate my 40th birthday and I am doing it in style with a trip to Dubai with my daughters and a birthday trip to the Bahamas with some of my best friends. Hitting 40 is exciting!” I have no idea now if manifestation would have helped during my many failed attempts to get a date with my-then-notwife, but perhaps deep down I was using it as the dream eventually became a reality. And considering Francesca Amber has over 58k followers on Instagram, it’s a message that many buy into too. Whatever that dream may be, think about it and then let Francesca know how it’s going – it could be a real life changer.

Francesca Amber, also known as ‘The Mother Of Manifesting’, is the host of the UK’s number one self-improvement podcast, ‘Law Of Attraction Changed My Life’, available to download and listen now. See more @francescaamber

CANVEY ISLAND

Tailor made

Anna Watson, founder of Anna James Tailoring, on her famous family links to North Essex and creating a pathway for herself

Anna Watson comes from a rich textile heritage: the Courtauld family. Her career in tailoring and fashion, and love for textiles, led her to follow in the footsteps of her North Essex based ancestors, to create her own brand that focuses on feelgood statement pieces, and a pledge to design limited-edition tailored pieces.

The Courtauld company played a pivotal role in British textile manufacturing, becoming one of the world’s largest textile businesses. Founded in 1793 by George Courtauld, it was later led by his great nephew, Samuel Courtauld –Anna’s great-great-grandfather – who established the Courtauld Institute of Art and the Courtauld Gallery, home to one of the world’s most renowned art collections, housed in the stunning Somerset House in London.

This rich history captivated her and sparked her lifelong love for textiles, which has evolved into running her own tailoring business. Here, she tells Absolutely all about it.

Q What elements of the Courtauld history fascinated you?

A I have always been fascinated by how the company played a pivotal role in British textile manufacturing, becoming one of the world’s largest textile businesses. I am also captivated by Samuel Courtauld, my great-great-grandfather’s legacy and how he established the Courtauld Institute of Art and the Courtauld Gallery.

Q Were you always going to work in textiles yourself?

Although my family’s rich history in textiles fascinated me from a young age and sparked a lifelong passion, it wasn’t until my 20s –when I began working in tailoring on Sloane Square – that my love for textiles and design came together. That experience was the turning point where my appreciation for textiles evolved into a career.

Q What do you remember about your first job in tailoring on Sloane Square?

A My first job was an eye-opening experience that taught me to wear many hats. It sparked my desire to run my own business and gave me invaluable insights into what to do (and what not to do!).

Q What inspired you to launch your own brand and collection back in 2015?

A Having worked in the industry, I saw a gap for beautifully tailored pieces that combined classic elegance with a modern edge. I wanted to create a brand that celebrated heritage fabrics, expert tailoring, and effortless sophistication, offering both men and women luxurious, well-crafted garments that would stand the test of time.

Q How different was your approach ten years ago?

A Ten years ago, I tried to do everything myself, but over the years, I’ve learned the value of delegation and outsourcing. Recognising my weaknesses and bringing in experts to strengthen those areas has not only improved efficiency, but also allowed me to focus on what I do best.

Q Why did you decide to focus on the ready-to-wear designs?

A I decided to focus on ready-to-wear because I wanted to create beautiful, statement pieces that are both accessible and stylish. The goal was to blend tailoring, craftsmanship, and versatility, ensuring that each piece feels special while still fitting

“The goal was to blend tailoring, craftmanship and versatility”
ANNA WATSON

seamlessly into everyday wardrobes. Readyto-wear allows me to reach more women, o ering them confidence-boosting designs that are thoughtfully made yet e ortless.

Q Was it an easy decision to rebrand in 2023?

A My original brand started as a madeto-measure menswear and womenswear label, which took o within just 18 months and saw incredible success. However, over time, I found it less fulfilling, especially with the challenges brought on by Brexit, COVID-related travel restrictions, and balancing a young family. I knew my womenswear had huge potential, and with a few strategic tweaks to my designs, I could create something truly special with a more accessible, ready-to-wear approach.

Q Now what do you create?

A Now, I create beautifully tailored, statement womenswear designed to empower and inspire confidence. My focus is on limited-edition, ready-to-wear pieces that blend timeless craftsmanship with modern versatility. Every design is thoughtfully created to make women feel strong, stylish, and e ortlessly put-together – whether it’s a perfectly cut blazer, an elegant waistcoat, or a striking two-piece suit.

Q How do you come up with a new design?

A It all starts with documenting inspiration on a moodboard, where I gather textures, colours, and concepts. From there, I move to pencil and paper, sketching out initial ideas and refining them until the design begins to take shape. The design process involves experimenting with silhouettes, proportions, and details, fabric and trimmings until it all falls into place and becomes a piece that feels both timeless and exclusive.

Q Can you give us a snapshot of its production process?

A Once a design is signed o , for example a blazer, a pattern is drafted to ensure a precise fit. A sample is then made, tested, and refined for the perfect structure and drape. Once the pattern is finalised, the fabric is cut with precision tools to minimise waste. Skilled artisans sew the blazer piece by piece, ensuring impeccable structure and carefully attach the buttons.

Special attention is given to lapels, shoulder padding, and darts for a flattering silhouette. Finally, the blazer is meticulously pressed and checked for stitching precision to perfect the final product.

Q You describe your brand as ‘fashion with a purpose’. Can you explain what you mean?

A I am passionate about women supporting women and empowerment is at the heart of the brand. My vision for Anna James is to be a brand and a community that gives back – fashion with a purpose. A purpose that unites, empowers and inspires women. For a unique touch the inside of selected pieces have been embroidered with empowering and inspiring quotes.

Q What is new for SS25?

A I’m beyond excited for our new linen collection arriving this April. This drop features stunning butter yellow and French blue blazers, along with elegant longline waistcoats and skirts. Plus, due to popular demand, we’re restocking our bestselling sky blue and dusty pink two-piece suits and the timeless neutral three-piece suit.

Q What ambitions do you still have for the brand?

A My goal is to continue to grow a loyal, like-minded community that values slow fashion while expanding internationally. Throughout this growth, maintaining our commitment to small-batch, high-quality production will remain a top priority. I’m also passionate about growing our DICE (Dream, Inspire, Confidence, Empower) campaign, forging meaningful partnerships with charities and initiatives that support women in fashion, business, and beyond. Empowering women through fashion is at the heart of everything we do, and I can’t wait to take this campaign even further.

Cracking GOOD TIME

Easter and Essex go hand in hand, as this round up of the best places and events highlights

EASTER BUNNY MADNESS

Easter would not be Easter without the Easter Bunny, and for those wanting a ‘paws on’ bunny experience there’s plenty of choice across the county.

Cammas Hall Farm in Hatfield Broad Oak is hosting an egg-citing clue laden Easter egg trail in the Hall’s beautiful bluebell woods from 5th-20th April. The Easter Bunny will be hopping around, distributing sweet treats to lucky boys and girls, and there will be other character encounters to thrill the kids. Plus, at the end of the trail there will be a cracking Easter prize waiting for them. The egg hunt will take between 30-40 minutes to complete and children will be able to access the outdoor games area for some bonus fun. Entry prices start from £3.50.

Another farm offering Easter themed fun for families is Marsh Farm at South Woodham Ferrers. Running from 29th March-7th April, their ‘Great Easter Eggstravaganza’ includes meeting adorable bunnies and chicks, costumed characters, glitter face painting, various rides, crazy golf and much more. The Easter egg hunt, with the Easter bunny, will only be available from 29th March-1st April. Tickets start at £14.99 (two years old plus).

Staying with farms, the longest running opportunity for children to have an Easter encounter is at Old MacDonald’s Farm in Brentwood. From 5th-21st April, the farm will offer Easter egg hunts, baby animal encounters, magic and puppet shows plus

circus workshops. Open from 10am to 5pm each day with entry at £17.85 per person.

EASTER FEASTS GALORE

Easter is also, of course, a time to indulge. So, treat yourself to one of the county’s top places to dine.

The stunning Down Hall over in Hatfield Heath will be hosting a special Easter afternoon tea on Easter Sunday (20th April). Their ‘Bunny kisses and Easter wishes’ will put an Easter twist on the traditional afternoon tea. Sweet and savoury delicacies will be presented, along with your choice of tea and coffee, plus there is an Easter egg hunt for the children. Prices start at £22.50pp.

The hotel will also be serving up an Easter Sunday feast with an unlimited lavish buffet. Choose from seafood platters, lobster mac and cheese, roast carvery, and desserts. Children can also take part in an Easter egg hunt in Down Hall’s picturesque grounds. Prices start from £27.50pp.

GREAT ESSEX DAYS OUT

Those looking for less chocolate and more adventures have plenty of outdoor choices. If you are feeling the need to move more, grab your running shoes and head over to Nuclear Races in Kelvedon Hatch for their 2K obstacle run. The course runs through woodland, where an instructor will advise you on how to tackle the course. The run ends with a good old-fashioned egg and spoon dash to the finish line. The course is fun for all the family, plus children will receive an Easter egg. There’s also a roaring fire pit for all members of the family to warm themselves by – just don’t forget to bring the marshmallows! The event starts at 10.30am on 18th, 19th and 21st April. Entry is £24 plus booking fee, and you can book four for the price of three.

If you are after more adrenaline head over to Langley Park Rally School near Saffron Walden and get behind the wheel of a rally car. Experience the thrill of high velocity driving over loose gravel while learning essential rally driving techniques from a pro. Children aged eight and over can have the fun of the junior rally driving experience. Half and full day packages are available with prices starting from £35pp.

FULL STEAM AHEAD

If you want something a little gentler, get off the dirt tracks and get on the rails at Audley End Miniature Railway. Climb aboard the tiny but powerful ‘Easter Special’ steam train that will run between 5th-21st April. Discover seasonal surprises for all the family as you ride through the woods passing magical Easter scenes as you go. You’ll meet ‘Shearlock Holmes’, the world’s greatest sheep detective, who has teamed up with the Easter bunny and farm animals to solve the mystery of the missing Easter eggs. Children will take home a springtime souvenir, from £18.75pp. Keeping with the steam theme, the Epping Ongar Railway will be running

AFTERNOON TEA AT DOWN HALL
AUDLEY END MINIATURE RAILWAY
THERE'S PLENTY FOR ADVENTURE SEEKERS

an ‘Easter Express’ on 16th, 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st April. You’ll need to ‘hop on’ the Easter Express to travel along the longest Easter egg hunt in Essex and ‘hop off’ at strategic points to find the Easter eggs hidden by Bertie the Easter Bunny. You’ll also be able to find Bertie on the platforms and on the train too.

HEAD TO THE WATER

If you would like a total change of scenery, head out onto the water. Brightlingsea Harbour boat trips restart on 1st April and are a great way to explore the coast around Brightlingsea, Point Clear and Mersea Island. The first boat departs at 10am and there are also harbour tours available too.

Staying with the nautical theme, board a Harwich seal watching trip from the

historic Ha’penny Pier. The tours are loved by all and last for two hours. You cruise around the Hamford Water Reserve, home to around 250 seals, and are guaranteed to see either a Harbour or Grey seal, along with an array of birdlife. There are two to three trips leaving each day, and it is best to check on their website for dates and times.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Another beautiful way to make memories with little ones is during Blossom Day at the gardens of Easton Lodge, Great Dunmow. Easter means spring, and spring means flowers and blossom! The Lodge’s gardens have magnificent displays of tulips, bluebells and blossom on the fruit trees. Throw in an egg hunt for the children, a folk duo performing and refreshments available, then you have the perfect recipe for a lovely day out. Blossom Day takes place on 13th April. Prices start at £6, children under 16 are free. Dogs on leads are welcome.

For something a little different, packed with atmosphere and excitement, the Good Friday Festival (18th April) at Chelmsford City Racecourse could have what you seek. The festival is the biggest race of the year and offers both games and family zones and an Easter bunny trail to keep all members of the family entertained whilst the horses are not galloping.

These are just a few of the amazing family events happening over Easter. To find out more head to visitessex.com

IRON man

How Jon O’Shea has put himself through physical and mental challenges to raise vital funds for good causes

Since launching his first ever Just Giving donation page in 2006, Epping Forest-based fundraiser Jon O’Shea has now surpassed an incredible milestone –raising over £100,000 for various good causes. Over the last 20 years, Jon’s fundraising challenges have taken him far and wide – from local events to globetrotting endurance challenges such as the gruelling 777 challenge (covering an impressive 7 marathons in 7 continents in 7 days). Every penny Jon has raised over the last two decades has gone directly to charities that support crucial causes. Recent beneficiaries include St Clare Hospice (based in Harlow) and The Dream Factory (based in Redbridge).

Through all his challenges, Jon remains focused on his mission: to give back and make a difference. His story is one of perseverance, resilience, and an unshakable drive to help those in need.

Avril Mills BEM, founder and trustee of The Dream Factory, says: “Jon has now raised over £10,000 for us on his own! He has a heart of gold and tends to put everybody else first. Jon is a caring, thoughtful and very charitable person who has now become to me a good friend. Personally I think Jon deserves some sort of award – for the recognition of his amazing charitable contributions and care for others less fortunate.”

When not tackling his next big challenge for charity, Jon is Chairman & Senior Tax Partner at Loughton-based firm Haslers Chartered Accountants. He also enjoys spending time with his wife, three children and granddaughter. When asked what’s next for Jon and his commitment to fundraising, he simply says: “Watch this space!”

Jon’s latest challenge saw him complete a 48-mile run across the county in a single day – running every 30 minutes for 24 hours! Thanks to the generosity of local businesses, friends and wellwishers he has since raised over £4,000 so far for this challenge alone.

The Peacock Inn in Chelsworth is catching the food industry’s eye, with a head chef who started his craft in Essex. Absolutely finds out more

“We offer a tasting menu with higher-end dishes, but without being pretentious”

Located in the charming Suffolk village of Chelsworth, the Peacock Inn is a beautiful grade II listed, 14th century timber-framed hostelry, featuring a superb restaurant, cosy bar, seven separate bedroom suites and a cottage surrounded by a lovely country garden. Delivering everything you could want in a pub, the Inn is now included in the Michelin Guide as a part of their November 2024 selections. Nestled on the north shore of the River Brett, the Peacock Inn offers exceptional cuisine showcasing skilled cooking and incredible Suffolk produce sourced from nearby farms and artisanal growers. The Inn is led by homegrown talent general manager Jack Butler and head chef Sam Clover. The menu features indulgent, comforting dishes exhibiting the finest Suffolk ingredients. Plates include ‘Sir Gerald’s pie’ made with Hereford beef shin braised in Suffolk ale, beef fat pastry, pomme puree, truffle and bordelaise sauce, and Filet of halibut, salsify barigoule, ventreche bacon, chanterelles, potato pave and chervil. On the dessert menu, expect Bergamot tart, bergamot and black tea pastille, jasmine milk gel, lemon and earl grey granite and 85% pump street chocolate mousse, sour quince, barley malt cremeux and cocoa nibs. Absolutely headed across the border to sit down with Sam and uncover a little more about his food philosophy, and how Essex plays a role.

Q You’ve worked at some prestigious restaurants. Have you taken something away from each of them?

A Each place I worked at taught me something different. At Lombard Street, my first job in London, I learned the importance of maintaining high standards and simplicity in cooking. Working with Herbert Berger was incredible – his focus on classic skills like butchery and fishmongering gave me a solid foundation. At Pied à Terre under Shane Osborn, I learned to be more creative and relaxed in the kitchen. Shane encouraged me to experiment with new things and helped me understand that cooking didn’t always have to be rigid.

Q What was the attraction of working at the Peacock Inn?

A It just felt right. I saw an advert online, and when I went to meet Olly, the owner, we hit it off immediately. The moment I saw the place, I just knew it was the right fit. It felt like fate. I was really impressed with Olly and his vision for the place was inspiring. The pub wasn’t in the best shape, but I saw potential. One of the things I’m most proud of is the people I work with – like Ed, the sous chef, who has been with us from the start. The success of the Peacock Inn is thanks to the great team and Olly’s business genius.

Q What are you looking to offer with the menus?

A I want the Peacock Inn to be a destination where you can experience the best of traditional pub food, but

elevated. Our menu includes dishes like scotch eggs, pies, and fish and chips, but they’re the best versions of these classics. We also offer a tasting menu with higher-end dishes, but without being pretentious. We offer good value for money, which is why we’ve been awarded a Bib Gourmand. Our wine selection is also well-priced and accessible.

Q What is the idea behind the eight-course tasting menu?

A The eight-course tasting menu is all about offering an accessible and affordable journey through our cooking. When we started, I was working alone and had to strip things back, but over time, we developed a strong trust with our customers. They loved our tasting menu on Valentine’s night, and the demand for it has only grown. It’s become a showcase for everything we can do – people love the experience.

Q Would you like to introduce anything new in the future?

A In the future, I’d like to focus on becoming more self-sufficient by starting an allotment or a walled garden. Our priority is improving the experience at the Peacock Inn –making everything we do better. We’re always looking for ways to offer our guests a superior dining experience, and growing our own vegetables and herbs will help us do that. We’re also planning to expand our greenhouses to support our sustainability efforts.

A LUXE MANICURE

Flawless nails at Townhouse

You might say that Townhouse is the Waitrose of nail bars. The standard high street nail bar might do a good enough job on your nails, but you won’t necessarily enjoy the experience all that much. But at Townhouse, it’s all about the comfort. Here, you sit at a long curved bar and sip prosecco as you study colour options on an ipad, walls free of those cluttered shelves displaying used bottles of polish. At Townhouse, they are all hidden away. I’ve come to the Ladbroke Grove outpost, a smaller Townhouse with no long bar, but with an equally stylish feel. Gels might be the most popular option here by quite a long way, but I’m not a fan. I don’t like to commit to a return visit for removal, so for me it’s regular polish, and I’m scrolling through the many options. What shape would I like? Here’s where I learn a new word. Usually I ask for square with rounded edges, or somewhere between square and round – and not only do they know exactly what I mean, but they have a word for it: squoval. What genius. I emerge, cuticles clipped, nails shaped and polished in my favourite shade of orangeyred (orand?) onto the rain-soaked street with the lift that only a fresh manicure can bring. EDITOR’S PICK

OBJECTS D’ART

Bethan Laura Wood is one of the most exciting new designers of the past decade. A new exhibition showcases her work
Words PEARL BOYD

Since founding her multidisciplinary studio in 2009, Bethan Laura Wood has redefined contemporary design with her bold explorations of materials, vibrant colour palettes, and rich artisan collaborations. And now her work goes on show for the first time in a solo presentation at the Design Museum, where a new display features some of her most eye-catching creations alongside brand new work.

Driven by a critical approach to sustainability, Bethan challenges the norms of mass consumption while fostering practical innovation. Through

her designs, she creates objects that inspire dialogue and connect people with the cultural stories embedded in everyday materials. Her distinctive work is celebrated for its kaleidoscope of colours, intricate patterns, layered references, and innovative use of materials.

With eclectic creations spanning furniture, lighting, jewellery, and installations, Bethan’s work is characterised by a bold use of colour, intricate patterns, and innovative material combinations. Objects on display range from stained teacups to patterned modular furniture.

Since obtaining an MA in Design Products at the Royal College of Art and establishing her eponymous design studio in 2009, Bethan has become one of the most exciting new designers of the past decade, and has quickly gained a cult following alongside a celebrated global design reputation. She’s been commissioned by and produced named collaborations with a variety of international partners in recent years, including Perrier-Jouët, Hermes and Dior, and she has works in the permanent collections of the Wellcome Collection and the V&A in London, the Dresden State Art Collections in Germany, the Art Institute of Chicago and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in the USA, and the National Gallery of Victoria in Australia.

PLATFORM: BETHAN LAURA WOOD

Until January 2026 at the Design Museumdesignmuseum.org

“The display will be split into three sections: Desire, Adornment and Hyperreality”

Bethan’s display at the Design Museum will be split into three sections – Desire, Adornment and Hyperreality – which explore some of the significant recurring themes of her work. “This exhibition not only highlights the final pieces, but also offers a behind-thescenes look at my creative process –from early sketches and renderings to detailed scale models,” she explains.

Desire focuses on Bethan’s fascination with how we connect with everyday objects. As an avid collector herself, Bethan’s work delves into how and why we covet certain pieces. By exploring objects that become integral to our daily routines, Bethan seeks to design things that people want to keep, and which give a sense of ceremony every time they are used.

On display in this section will be a porcelain tea set intentionally stained by Bethan so that the more the cups are used, the more the pattern reveals itself. These will be seen alongside a colourful and embroidered installation of desserts inspired by paintings in Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum. There’ll also be striking wall-mounted flower lights created in collaboration with Mexican and Italian artisans.

Adornment will explore Bethan’s use of ornamentation, decoration and pattern. Her

practise considers how objects can be both functional and highly ornate, with decoration adding layered meaning. Featured here is Bethan’s reinterpretation of Tolix’s ‘Model A’ chair, a ubiquitous seat in public spaces. Her eye-catching redesign saw her subvert the original chair’s simplicity by combining two apparent opposites – the feminine form and industrial power. It was in part inspired by the robot Maschinenmensch Maria from the film ‘Metropolis’ (1927) and Queen Elizabeth I. In the final section, Hyperreality, objects on show demonstrate how Bethan plays with our understanding of what is natural versus what is man-made, and how she often creates illusions by layering materials and pattern to force us to question what we are looking at.

HyperNature, Bethan’s psychedelic wall sconce, features branches made from aluminium and leaves and petals made from PVC, blurring the boundaries between the natural and man-made while also elevating PVC from an everyday material into an artisan object. A full-scale example of one of Bethan’s Kaleidoscopeo-rama carpets – produced by cc-tapis – is a contemporary take on highly decorative rugs that were popular during the Regency period in Britain. Bethan’s carpets nod to the popular painting method of ‘graining’, a decorative technique that imitates the look of expensive and rare hardwoods.

COLOUR SENSE

Beata Heuman has launched a new collection of paints with Mylands, and her own home is the perfect showcase for them

Originally from Sweden, Beata Heuman is an interior designer who has been making waves in the design world since founding her own practice in 2013. Her work is thoughtful, creative and full of nostalgia, making her popular with an imaginative audience and establishing “a well-deserved reputation for homes filled with whimsical, personal details” (British Vogue). Beata is a fixture on all major lists of the world’s most talented interior designers with Architectural Digest calling her the “It girl of the AD 100” and Forbes singling her out as “One of the most sought-after interior designers in Britain”. Beata’s approach to colour is instinctive; she is known for just getting it right, so news that she has launched a paint colour collaboration is sparking a lot of interest. She has teamed up with Mylands, the luxury British paint and wood polishes manufacturer to create The Dependables, a collection of 24 considered, vivid and reliable paint colours. Encapsulating a

palette of shades refined over decades of designing interiors, The Dependables are trusted colours you can rely on: versatile light neutrals to cover most walls, mid-tones for shadowy depth in places, darker shades to add edge and contrast, a generous sprinkling of uplifting but calming greens and blues, buttery, irresistible yellows and a sizzling pop of red to add the cherry on the cake.

Beata has long admired Mylands, which has been perfecting the art of fine paints for over 140 years and five generations, an expertise for which it was awarded a Royal Warrant in 1985. Mylands is one of the last remaining manufacturers to still use natural earth pigments in its paints which makes them durable, colour rich and kind to the planet.

Each of the 24 trusted shades has been carefully honed and tested to ensure they work in most settings, in different combinations and cohesively as a whole. Though curated and succinct, the collection is versatile and full of possibility. When picking the best paint colours to use at home there is an almost limitless choice available. This collection is designed to be an edited range that is easy to navigate and decorate with, and can be returned to again and again.

On the collection, Beata says: “It has been my dream to do my own paint collection. I am very specific about colour, and I think about it a lot, so it has been thoroughly enjoyable expressing that and now being able to share it with a bigger audience. The team at Mylands are so enthusiastic about paint and colour, and working with Anna Steel, Head of Colour Development, has been a crucial part of the process. When we found ourselves seven

tries down in the sampling process with Cigar, even I was close to giving up! Anna kept pushing and I think that commitment to getting it right really shines through looking at the collection we’ve created.” Dominic Myland, CEO, Mylands, adds: “From capturing a perfect white in No. 1 Beata White, which I’m sure will be universally loved, to cheering pops of brighter hues, these colours are sophisticated and easy to use. I really appreciate her dedication to developing exactly the right shade with Anna and our team at the factory; it mirrors our own passion for creating beautiful colours that will stand the test of time.”

Although the original structure was destroyed and rebuilt over the centuries, the current castle retains its historic character while offering all the amenities of a modern luxury hotel. The restoration of the

castle in the early 2000s was a labour of love, ensuring that its rich heritage was preserved while incorporating contemporary comforts.

The rooms and suites are nothing short of spectacular – especially the newly constructed Donegal Suites. Each space is uniquely designed, blending period features like stone fireplaces and antique furnishings with plush bedding, state-of-the-art technology, and luxurious bathrooms. Many rooms offer stunning views of the lake or the surrounding woodlands, creating a sense of peace and connection to nature. The castle also boasts a world-class spa, the Cara Spa, where guests can indulge in a range of treatments designed to rejuvenate the mind, body, and soul.

Dining at Lough Eske Castle is an experience in itself. The Cedars Restaurant, with its elegant ambiance and panoramic views of the lake, serves gourmet dishes crafted from locally sourced ingredients. The menu celebrates the best of Irish cuisine, with a modern twist that delights the palate – the feather blade of Irish Beef is one of the finest dishes I’ve had in some time.

For a more casual dining experience, the Gallery Bar offers hearty meals and a cozy atmosphere, perfect for enjoying a pint of Guinness or a glass of fine whiskey by the fire.

One of the highlights of staying at Lough Eske Castle is its proximity to some of Donegal’s most stunning natural attractions. Guests can explore the nearby Blue Stack Mountains, hike through Glenveagh National Park, or take a scenic drive along the Wild Atlantic Way. The castle also offers a range of activities, from fishing on Lough Eske to guided tours of the surrounding area.

What truly sets Lough Eske Castle apart, however, is its impeccable service. The staff go above and beyond to ensure that every guest feels like royalty, attending to every detail with warmth and professionalism. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, Lough Eske Castle delivers an experience that is both magical and memorable.

THE CEDARS RESTAURANT

Lough Eske Castle is more than just a hotel – it’s a destination that captures the essence of Donegal’s beauty and heritage. Its combination of historic charm, modern luxury, and unparalleled hospitality makes it a must-visit for anyone traveling to Ireland.

DONEGAL

Ireland’s Untamed Gem

County Donegal, in the northwest corner of Ireland, is a land of raw beauty and unspoiled landscapes. Known for its rugged coastline, towering cliffs and rolling hills, Donegal is a paradise for nature lovers and adventurers. The county’s dramatic scenery, shaped by the wild Atlantic Ocean, is a highlight of the Wild Atlantic Way, one of the world’s most scenic driving routes. Donegal’s charm lies in its remoteness and authenticity. Unlike more tourist-heavy regions of Ireland, Donegal retains a sense of tranquility and timelessness. The people of Donegal are known for their warmth and hospitality, and the Gaelic language and culture are still very much

alive here. Visitors can immerse themselves in traditional music sessions, sample local delicacies, and explore ancient ruins that tell the story of Ireland’s rich history.

One of Donegal’s most iconic landmarks is Slieve League, home to some of the highest sea cliffs in Europe. These towering cliffs, which rise nearly 2,000 feet above the Atlantic, offer breathtaking views and exhilarating hiking trails. Glenveagh National Park, another must-visit destination, is a vast wilderness of mountains, lakes, and forests, home to a diverse array of wildlife and the stunning Glenveagh Castle.

The coastline is dotted with charming fishing villages, such as Killybegs and Ardara, where visitors can enjoy fresh seafood and browse local craft shops. The county is also famous for its tweed, with Donegal tweed being a symbol of Irish craftsmanship and heritage.

For those seeking adventure, Donegal offers endless opportunities for outdoor activities, from surfing and kayaking to hiking and cycling. The county’s

unspoiled beaches, such as Murvagh and Rossnowlagh, are perfect for a leisurely stroll or a refreshing dip in the Atlantic. Time, in general, seems to slow down, allowing the ability to truly connect with nature and experience the essence of Ireland. Whether you’re exploring its dramatic landscapes, immersing yourself in its culture, or simply soaking in its peaceful atmosphere, Donegal is a destination that will leave a lasting impression.

MAGEE 1866

A Legacy of Craftsmanship

Magee 1866 is a name synonymous with quality, tradition, and Irish heritage. Based in Ardara, County Donegal, this family-run business has been producing some of the finest tweed in the world for over 50 years. Tweed, a durable and versatile fabric, has long been a symbol of Irish craftsmanship, and Magee 1866 continues to uphold this legacy with pride.

The process of creating Donegal tweed is a labour-intensive art form that has been passed down through generations. Magee

1866 uses traditional methods, including hand-weaving on wooden looms, to produce fabric that is not only beautiful but also incredibly durable. The distinctive flecks of colour that characterise Donegal tweed are created by blending different coloured yarns, resulting in a unique and timeless aesthetic.

Magee 1866 offers a wide range of products, from classic tweed jackets and coats to scarves, hats, and home furnishings. Each piece is crafted with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that it meets the highest standards of quality. The brand’s commitment to sustainability is also evident in its use of natural fibres and eco-friendly practices.

What sets Magee 1866 apart is its deep connection to the local community. The business supports local weavers and artisans, helping to preserve a tradition that is an integral part of Donegal’s cultural heritage. Visitors to the Magee 1866 shop in Donegal can

witness the weaving process first-hand and purchase one-of-a-kind pieces to take home.

SLIABH LIAG DISTILLERY A Taste of Donegal’s Spirit

Perched on the rugged coastline of County Donegal, Sliabh Liag Distillery is a celebration of Irish whiskey and gin, crafted with passion and precision. Named after the nearby Slieve League cliffs, the distillery is a testament to Donegal’s rich distilling history, which dates back centuries before being revived by this innovative venture.

Sliabh Liag Distillery is the first legal distillery in Donegal in over 175 years, and it has quickly gained a reputation for producing exceptional spirits. Using traditional methods and locally sourced ingredients, the distillery creates whiskey and gin that capture the essence of Donegal’s wild and untamed landscape.

Visitors to the distillery can take guided tours to learn about the distillation process and discover the history of distilling in Donegal and the revival of this oncethriving industry. The on-site bar and shop provide the perfect opportunity to sample the distillery’s products and purchase bottles to take home. The distillery sources its ingredients from local farmers and foragers, supporting the local economy and reducing its environmental footprint.

For whiskey and gin enthusiasts, a visit to Sliabh Liag Distillery is a must. It’s not just a place to enjoy a drink; it’s an experience that connects you to the land, the people, and the spirit of Donegal. Whether you’re sipping a smooth whiskey or a refreshing gin, you’re tasting a piece of Donegal’s soul.

PURA VIDA

"The Rich Coast", Costa Rica: adventure, nature and relaxation

Words by CRYSTAL MCCLORY

Costa Rica is renowned for its remarkable biodiversity and abundance of wildlife. Encounter colourful birds, rainforests, and national parks, and relax or surf at the beach. Bed in for the long-haul flight. I wear a Jigsaw cashmere hoodie and enjoy the in-flight entertainment with brilliant, active noise-cancelling M4U 9 headphones from PSB Speakers. Arriving from San José Airport, we drive into Hotel Costa Rica Marriott Hacienda past their co ee plantation and see the Central Valley lights twinkle in the distance.

At sunrise, there is a cacophony of birdsong in the palm trees. Parakeets squabble as gray hawks glide above grassy mountains. Bu et breakfast is on the terrace overlooking glorious grounds and blue skies from this yellow colonial-style hacienda. Facilities include pools, a gym, a spa and a 24-hour café.

Nearby Anfiteatro de Villa is an unusual yet entertaining experience with replicas of famous sculptures including the Trevi Fountain. After a sangria at the Italian restaurant, we tour the underground tunnels with diverse art themes in each cave.

San José is urban and gritty – visit Teatro Nacional, Museo Nacional and the Gold Museum. For local dishes, including popular ‘Gallo Pinto’ rice and beans or patacones, dine at Nuestra Tierra or try cool Café Rojo for Vietnamese fusion. Driving up to Monteverde past green landscapes, rivers run over boulders and horses graze. One of my favourite meals is at Tortillas restaurant and a quote on a refreshing G&T reads, ‘It’s not about living but being alive’!

Light filters through the leaves as we breathe in the pure air at Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. Walking high above on suspension bridges on the Sky Walk at Treetopia Park. The brave can zip line, soaring at heights of up to 328 feet! On a mountain ridge with its own microclimate, it’s cool and cloudy. Well, it is the Cloud Forest. Mist swirls in the continental divide between the Pacific and the Atlantic. Moss grows on all sides and it rains a lot, with light rains common even during

the sunny season, so pack that mac. For all you fledgling twitchers, download the Merlin Bird ID app to identify bird species. Our guide points out a Trumpet tree, epiphytes, parasitic plants, tiny orchids, a bright green viper and a tarantula! A white-nosed Coati wanders past. The hummingbirds are sensational to watch as they whizz, click and buzz to the feeders, the humming created by the rapid beating of their iridescent wings.

The ‘Jardin de Mariposa’ Butterfly Garden has stick insects and the Blue Morpho butterfly, the national symbol of Costa Rica, shimmers with translucent wings. We spot a woodpecker and a turquoise-browed motmot bird.

Take the scenic route by boat across Arenal Lake towards the imposing Arenal volcano, La Fortuna. Listening to the thrum of the engine, the boat creates white waves that echo the white clouds above the lush green rainforest.

The Sloths & Birds Mariolas Trail is interesting and educational. We see sloths and a toucan, and love tortilla making and exotic bird watching. Lunch is at Organico Fortuna. My heart beats climbing the stairs to the Fortuna Waterfall and there’s a roar in my ears… of the rushing water. Relax at Paradise Hot Springs, where the highlight is a swim-up bar in the warm thermal baths in the pouring rain! Dine at delicious, fun restaurants Fortuneño or Kenko.

Di cult roads can lead to beautiful places… it’s an early start and I close my eyes, headphones on for the next rainy journey on challenging roads to Pacuare. White-water rafting with Exploradores Outdoors down the

Pacuare River is for thrill-seekers, adrenaline junkies or people like me who’ll try anything once. I distract myself from the sheer terror… Ooh, a butterfly flutters, a tiger heron, cormorants. Golden Pendulum ‘Montezuma Oropendola’ birds fly above us. Our professional guide soon takes our minds o the rapids. He makes an extreme experience exhilarating and fun. Our hero, I mean, guide Enrique (from Costa Rica Extreme) plucks the first person to fall in, with ease, out of the water. On-Running Cloud trainers were invaluable for hiking the Cloud Forest, and rafting as I wedge my feet in the boat clinging on for dear life. Head to the southern Caribbean coast of Puerto Viejo Talamanca. Arriving at Cariblue Beach & Jungle Resort we see a sloth with its baby pulling itself slowly up the vines on a tree. At morning yoga, a low guttural noise emits as we bend and stretch. It’s not me, it’s a troop of howler monkeys in the trees. I spy them swinging from branch to branch as I swing to breakfast. A monkey runs up a rope above my head into a tree and an Agouti runs in the jungle as I sip a star fruit juice. I spy a gold iguana nodding by the freshwater swimming pool. Over the road is the beach of Playa Cocles with volleyball, tightrope walkers, surfers and lifeguards. Cycle past the gorgeous boutique Hotel Aquas Claras and Gigi Beach Club to Playa Punta Uva. Hydrate skin with The Organic Pharmacy Vitamin C serum and beachy hair with Monpure Ultralight Healthy Hair Oil. Watch the moonlight on the waves and the fire dancers at Firespace as the sky turns pink and the stars come out to shine. Tuk-tuk up the road for breakfast at Nanku or Bread & Chocolate, pizza at Cafe Viejo or dine with local ‘Ticos’ at Tamara. Stylish Aloe Boutique is a collective of Costa Rican designers. Buy souvenirs and dreamcatchers at Wolaba Cat. Hot Rocks has live music, and La Salsa Brava beach bar (named after Puerto Viejo’s famous 20-foot wave) is fun for cocktails. The name Costa Rica is Spanish for rich coast and you’ll leave rich in adventures, wildlife experiences and happy memories.

Local schools shine in latest school performance tables

“These results reflect the trust's unwavering focus on achievement for all”

helmsford Learning Partnership, a multiacademy trust of eight academies located in Essex, is celebrating strong results across its schools following the publication of the Department for Education’s school performance tables.

In Key Stage 2 (Years 3 to 6), 71.5 per cent of the trust’s primary school pupils achieved the national standards in reading, writing and maths, compared to the national average of just 61 per cent. Furthermore, the percentage of Key Stage 2 pupils within the trust working above their expected standards for their age was significantly higher than the national averages. More than 43 per cent of the trust’s primary school pupils achieved ‘greater depth’ compared to the national average of 28 per cent in maths.

At Tyrrells Primary School, the Key Stage 2 results for reading, writing and maths (combined) placed pupils in the 93rd percentile nationally (where the 1st percentile is the lowest and the 100th percentile is the highest). At Perryfields Infant School, the percentage of pupils who achieved the phonics screening check in Year 1 was 93 per cent compared to the national average of 80 per cent. Success was also seen at secondary school level. The trust saw progress above the national averages in Progress 8 scores (+0.13 compared to the national figure of -0.03) and a considerable increase in the percentage of Grades 9 to 7 (equivalent to A* and A). The overall performance of students at The Beaulieu Park School

was amongst the highest in Essex, and England, with their Progress 8 score ranking them 177th out of all 6,550 schools nationally including grammar schools. Reflecting on the schools’ successes, Paul Banks, CEO at The Chelmsford Learning Partnership, says: “These results reflect the trust’s unwavering focus on ‘achievement for all’ and I would like to thank our schools’ dedicated staff whose expertise and encouragement for every pupil supports their progress and achievement. Finally, I want to recognise the ongoing support of our parent community, who work alongside our teachers to ensure their children achieve their aspirations.”

Norfolk rugby legend Ben Youngs returns to Gresham’s as Head of Performance Sport

Q Tell us about your new role at Gresham’s School.

A I’m excited to be returning to Gresham’s, where I was once a pupil, to take on the role of Head of Performance Sport. I’ll be working across a range of sports –including hockey, netball, cricket and rugby – mentoring and developing pupils to reach their full potential.

Q How did your time at Gresham’s influence your development?

A It was a huge influence, both on and off the pitch. On the sports field, I had two brilliant coaches who really encouraged me to aim high and chase my dreams – there were no limits with them. Beyond sport, I really developed in the classroom as well – learning essential skills like decision making, presenting and listening to others. All valuable skills on and off the pitch.

Q What do you hope to achieve by mentoring the pupils?

A I’ve spent a long time in high-performance environments and experienced highs and lows along the way. I want to share those experiences with the pupils, help them unlock their potential and build their confidence so they can be the best version of themselves.

We’ll also work on things like setting goals, staying motivated, trusting their instincts and building both mental and physical strength.

Q How can your experience of playing for England and the Lions be applied in your new role?

A I tackled playing for England and the Lions with huge enthusiasm, and that’s exactly what I want to bring to this role. I want to challenge the pupils and help

them commit fully to what they’re doing, whether it’s on the pitch or in other areas of their lives. The skills they develop – like dedication and resilience – can be carried with them into whatever path they choose.

Q What three things are you hoping you can instil in pupils?

A First and foremost, I want to teach humility – it’s such an important quality and something I’ve always valued. I also want pupils to be competitive, but in a way that focuses on challenging themselves rather than others. Finally, I want to encourage them to pursue their goals without putting any limits on what they can achieve.

Choosing the best Early Years setting for your child

When choosing the right Early Years setting for your child, it’s important to see what makes each place special. Although many nurseries and schools offer similar services, the best ones have unique features that stand out. The Oak-Tree Group of Schools is a prime example of excellence, with its engaging curriculum that supports all areas of a child’s growth.

EXPLORING THE OAK-TREE EARLY YEARS

The Oak-Tree Early Years Foundation Stages include Lower Kindergarten, Upper Kindergarten and Reception. The schools’ settings are both fun and safe, making them perfect places for children to grow and encouraging them to be curious, play and learn cooperation and respect.

CURRICULUM AND LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

At the Oak-Tree Schools, children as young as two and a half are immersed in

settings that encourage creativity and independence. Challenging activities are designed to build their social, communication and emotional skills through play and structured learning. The Lower and Upper Kindergarten classes focus on early literacy and numeracy, including specialist subjects such as Languages, Computing, Phonics and PE. The schools also offer a multitude of after school clubs, fun educational trips and curriculum workshops that add more depth to the children’s learning experiences.

PREMISES AND FACILITIES

The layout and facilities of an Early Years setting should feature highly in your decision process. The Oak-Tree Schools use their surroundings in their grounds and locality to extend the learning beyond the classroom. This includes trips to Epping Forest, local fire stations, farms and nature parks as well as use of the well-equipped outdoor areas designed specifically for young children. Children have access to resources that, depending on the site, include libraries, computer suites, school halls, studios, extensive outside areas and banks of iPads.

CLASS SIZES

The Oak-Tree philosophy is to keep class sizes smaller than the norm, which means that teachers, teaching assistants and other support staff can give more focussed attention to each child. This helps to better understand and support each child’s learning needs, which they discuss regularly with parents as part of the ongoing formal and informal system of feedback. The schools keep to low child-to-staff ratios, meaning that more staff are always on hand to stretch and challenge the young children.

COMMUNITY

Starting at an Oak-Tree Kindergarten makes it easier for children to move up to Reception, Year 1 and beyond with the same cohort. There are no extra tests for moving up, which makes the transition smoother and lets children stay with their friends in a familiar setting. This consistency is important for the children’s sense of community and confidence, and often leads to a closer relationship between pupils and the school.

Hunt, co-founder of Durden and Hunt, looks at how the rental market has started in 2025

There’s no denying the UK rental market has experienced a notable shift over the past year, and is set to face further changes with the proposed Renters Rights Bill anticipated to come into effect in 2025. The industry reforms, if approved and implemented, will undoubtedly reset the landlord and tenant relationship, increasing the complexity and regulations required to rent property.

When considering the implications of proposed policy changes and that rents have risen by just 3% in the last 12 months, which has been the slowest rate of growth in 3.5 years (Zoopla), it’s perhaps understandable why there is some trepidation from existing and prospective landlords regarding investing in the rental pool. It’s likely no coincidence that the number of available homes for sale

has reached a 10-year high (Rightmove), with some landlords deciding to sell.

Rightmove suggests there’s been a rapid growth in the number of properties for sale with 14% more flats coming to market and 5% more houses. However it would be remiss not to acknowledge the Stamp Duty changes have played their part in the volume of available homes so far this year. There are some positives within the rental market with Zoopla predicting that UK rents will still increase by 3-4% in 2025. Additionally they suggest there are currently 12 renters competing for each available rental property showing that demand still outweighs supply and ensuring the market stays competitive.

As always it helps to be informed, so whether you’re an investor, prospective landlord or tenant, reach out to myself or my team to discuss the market, possible legislation changes and what to consider when making property plans this year.

The Dream Factory

The Essex-based charity needs your urgent help to keep making dreams come true

The Dream Factory charity, and its founder Avril Mills BEM, have been a regular feature in the pages of Absolutely since we launched – but now they need your help to ensure there is still plenty to come.

For the last 17 years, the Essex charity has been dedicated to granting dreams to children and young adults between the age of three to 25 years, who suffer from life-threatening, life-limiting conditions, or have severe disabilities, or are sadly having end of life care. Thanks to your support, the charity has brought joy, hope, and unforgettable experiences and dreams to nearly 750 children and their families, during some of the most challenging times.

But today, the charity is facing an urgent challenge. The current economic climate has significantly impacted the charity’s funding, and they are now at risk of being unable to continue their vital work for children and young adults. Sadly, without immediate financial support, they may no longer be able to grant dreams to the children who need them most. Every dream The Dream Factory grants is a chance to create lasting memories for a child and their family, a moment to escape illness and embrace joy. These dreams are often a lifeline for families, bringing light during their darkest times.

“Please help me keep The Dream Factory alive,” says Avril. “We cannot let these dreams fade away and we already have 40 more dreams on a waiting list. I speak from my own experience. I set up the charity in 2008, in memory of my son Oliver, who died of Leukaemia at the age of nine. Sadly, Oliver was diagnosed in 1990

and was treated at three London hospitals – Barts, The London and Great Ormond Street. At the beginning of January 2008, The Dream Factory was itself a dream, I knew what I wanted to do, and was prepared to work hard to make it happen.

“While Oliver, a big EastEnders fan, was having treatment in hospital, I arranged for him to meet Ross Kemp, Martine McCutcheon, and Sid Owen. Liking the idea, I went on to make a wish for another child, who had always wanted to meet the Arsenal FC team. Before my Oliver died, he expressed the wish to grant dreams for children when he grew up, and so The Dream Factory began.

“We urgently need your help to keep our charity alive. Your donation, no matter the size, will make an immediate and tangible difference. Please spread the word: share our message with your friends, family, and colleagues. Time is of the essence. Please act today to help us continue granting dreams and creating hope for these incredibly brave children and young adults.”

If you would like to donate or consider sponsorship to help continue granting dreams, you can email Avril at avril@yourdreamfactory.org or contact her on 07712 619726
