Donít get me wrong, I love the golden leaves in autumn, but nothing beats that crisp chill in the air and the first fall of snow.
Living in Chester, Iíve been leaning into all things local lately, reminding myself that you donít need to leave Cheshire to feel inspired. The region is full of hidden gems and independents that truly deserve the spotlight.
This time of year also brings out the best in local events from festive shopping weekends in Altrincham to the magical Chester Christmas Market. Itís one of the reasons Iíll always champion Cheshire: we have that rare blend of elegance and warmth, where people genuinely support one anotherís ventures, cheer on small businesses, and celebrate creativity.
As the year winds down, Iíve been reflecting on what makes Cheshire such a brilliant place for entrepreneurs and creatives. Thereís a unique synergy here, the perfect balance of countryside calm and city ambition.
You can brainstorm a brand strategy over brunch in Bowdon, host a client meeting in a Manchester hotel lobby, and still make it back for a dog walk before dark. Itís no wonder so many of the people I

work with base themselves here; it o ers a lifestyle that fuels both drive and wellbeing.
Personally, Iím embracing the season by slowing down just a little, swapping constant travel for cosy local evenings, supporting the boutiques that make our high streets shine, and enjoying the sparkle thatís already appearing as Cheshire gears up for Christmas.
Iíve been making time for simple moments too: walking along Chesterís city walls with a hot chocolate in hand, Iíll be watching fireworks light up the sky, and ending the evening with festive drinks at Plana Terra.
Iíd say the seasonís o cially here.

I will be doing...
EAT: Dinner at Rake Hall, roaring fires, seasonal comfort food, and a relaxed atmosphere that makes it an easy favourite this time of year.
WATCH : I can't wait until December, I'm watching The Holiday, it’s my ultimate cosyseason comfort film.
DO : Booking tickets for The Grotto Manchester, it’s the ultimate festive experience and the perfect way to kickstart the Christmas magic.

Eighty years ago, on the late afernoon of 14th December 1945, Bernard Lovell was alone in a muddy field in the Cheshire countryside. The sign at the entrance read “Jodrell Bank Experimental Grounds”, a remote outpost of the University of Manchester botany department. The ex-army equipment set up outside the gardeners’ huts were transmitting radar pulses into space. Hunched over the cathode ray tube, an elated Lovell was transfixed by the echoes returning from high in the atmosphere. He had been given permission to work at Jodrell Bank for two weeks. He never lef Lovell had never intended to build an observatory, nor even a telescope, and he certainly wasn’t an astronomer. It was a series of chance events that changed his life, leading to the creation of one of the world’s great observatories.
As part of Jodrell Bank’s 80th anniversary celebrations, travel back in time with Professor Tim O’Brien on a fascinating journey through history on 13th November. Illustrated with rare photographs and archival documents, he’ll explore how one man’s fascination with technology and a determination forged by war transformed a small botanical site into a window to the universe.

A co-host of the Cheshirebased podcast, NipTuck , writes about her own personal journey and hitting back against the online trolls
By LAURENADAMSON
When I first found myself the subject of online trolling, I wasnít prepared for how it could seep into every corner of my life. As a mother, the instinct to protect is overwhelming yet suddenly I had to come to terms with the fact that strangers on the internet felt entitled to tear me apart. As a woman, I was reminded how often our voices are policed, criticised, or diminished simply for existing in public spaces and even more so for being successful. And as a businesswoman, I faced a choice: let the noise break me down, or use it as fuel to push harder.
Initially, the impact of online trolling was awful. I became withdrawn, constantly questioning who these people were behind their screens. Could I trust anyone? I would go to the supermarket or the nursery run and wonder if it was someone I smiled at. Despite social media slowly becoming a career, I deleted it for three months, anxious about every post and how Iíd be judged.
Iíve been fortunate to never face it alone. From the start, my best friend and NipTuck co≠host, Ashley Stobart, has been by my side. Sadly, she experienced the same abuse in some cases, even more so. Like me, she was also a single mum, and her humour, support, and thick skin helped me navigate the hardest times. Together, we became determined to keep going, to be an unfiltered outlet
for women, and to create a girlsí≠girl community through NipTuck now a chart topping, number one podcast.
Ashley and I have known each other since our early 20s. We first worked together and clicked immediately, and during our friendship, we both became single mums. For me, my daughter was just eight weeks old, and it was an incredibly challenging time. There was a lot of societal shame attached to being a single mother shame that wouldnít exist for a single dad. Judged for working, judged for childcare choices, I felt isolated. Our open conversations on the podcast provide a safe space for women, particularly those without supportive friendship groups, to feel seen and heard.
The debut episode of NipTuck began as a way to set the record straight against online rumours, suggested by Ashley herself. It was a huge hit. People responded to our honesty and banter, and soon we were recording on demand. We never expected it to reach the heights it has; it was an opportunity to reclaim our voices.
From the beginning, honesty has been non≠negotiable. We talk about what everyone is thinking, but wouldnít say out loud mum fails, tweakments, sex lives, friendships nothing is o ≠limits. This authenticity resonates with our listeners, many of whom have reached out to say that our conversations helped them through dark times or guided them

in navigating challenges. That reminds us that the people listening arenít numbers they are individuals whose lives weíve touched, and it makes the work feel vital. Of course, honesty comes with a cost. Online trolling isnít unique to us; the more successful you are, the bigger the target. Weíve seen it happen across the industry. But weíve also learned that trolls are often projecting their own unhappiness, and that laughter at ourselves is a powerful shield. Our podcast philosophy, ìWhat Sally says about Susie says more about Sally than Susieî, is central and a term we use often. Female friendships are invaluable, and scaling that support through NipTuck is immensely rewarding. Thankfully, since our single mum days, weíve both met our partners, James and Ed, and now have happy, blended families something I believe should be celebrated in 2025. We live our lives fully, work hard, have fun, and enjoy a glass of wine when we want to. Women should never be shamed for doing so. At the heart of everything we do, Ashley and I are committed to women supporting women. Although there have been lows, the highs have been incredible. Vulnerability has
proven to be our strength the more we share authentically, the more resilient we become. Once I realised that judgment is inevitable, being authentic became easier. Nobody is perfect, and the energy it takes to pretend is exhausting. Living and letting live, embracing imperfection, and using humour to navigate life has become our mantra.
So whatís next for NipTuck? Our growth so far has been organic, driven by word of mouth and social media. The next step is wider visibility to reach more listeners, spark more conversations, and challenge stereotypes about women being pitted against one another. Beyond this, Iíd love to take our conversations into live shows, meet≠ups, and eventually television perhaps even a spot on Loose Women NipTuck began as a platform to respond to trolls, but it has become so much more: a platform for authenticity, laughter, and empowerment. Ashley and I are proof that when women support each other, resilience multiplies, voices are amplified, and communities are created. That is the legacy we hope to continue building.

Cheshire Wildlife Trust have announced their 2026 calendar competition winners

Cheshire Wildlife Trust has announced the winners of its 2026 calendar photography competition. The 12 winning images, along with 12 runners≠up, will be featured in the Trustís popular fundraising calendar, which is now available for pre≠order.
Earlier this year, the Trust invited budding photographers to submit photos of local wildlife and wild places across Cheshire, Halton, Stockport, Tameside, Tra!ord, Warrington and Wirral. Over 160 entries were received, showcasing a stunning array of nature photography from across the region.
Award≠winning wildlife photographer Ben Hall reviewed the entries and has selected 12 winners and 12 runners up, which will all feature in the 2026 calendar. He also picked an overall winner: great crested grebes battling in Marbury taken by Colin Woods, which features on the front cover.
The calendar is now available to pre≠ order for just £10. All money raised will help the recovery of nature in Cheshire, so we can all enjoy seeing more of the wonderful species featured in the calendar.
Kat Wade, Fundraising Manager at Cheshire Wildlife Trust, says: ìEvery year weíre amazed at the stunning photographs people have captured across the region. Thereís so much variety and beauty in Cheshire and thatís really been captured in this yearís entries. It gets harder every year to pick the winners! Our 2026 calendar includes a stunning selection of birds, insects, mammals, plants, fungi and trees creatively captured in Cheshire. Weíd like to say a huge congratulations to our winners and runners up!
ìOur calendar proves more popular each year and helps raise vital funds to support our work. Itís fantastic to know that so many people want to have images of Cheshireís beautiful wildlife on their wall all year round and help protect it. However, its popularity means we do sell out! Be sure to pre≠order your copy so you donít miss out.î
A full list of winners and runners up can be found on the Cheshire Wildlife Trust website. You can also see all the photos featured in the calendar and pre≠order your copy at cheshirewildlifetrust.org.uk/shop

Step inside the iconic Boeing 747 with The 744 Experience

Just outside Tattenhall in Cheshire lies a truly extraordinary attraction, The 744 Experience, where visitors can step inside a real section of a former British Airways Boeing 747≠400. Here, aviation fans, former crew, and curious travellers alike can relive the magic of flying the worldís most loved airliner whether at the controls in the flight deck or seated in the luxurious upper deck cabin. Lovingly built from original sections, instruments and flight systems salvaged from retired BA aircraft, the simulator has been engineered by professional aviation experts to deliver a breathtakingly authentic experience. Enhanced surround sound and 220≠degree visuals make each flight feel truly immersive. The idea behind the project was simple
but powerful: to preserve a significant piece of aviation history. When British Airways retired its 747 fleet during the pandemic, many aircraft were dismantled or scrapped. For millions of passengers and crew, it was the end of an era.
While four complete airframes were saved for static display at locations such as Dunsfold and Cotswold Airport, the founders of 744 Experience wanted to go one step further to create an indoor, fully interactive tribute that would let people once again feel what it was like to fly aboard a 747.
Their vision became reality in 2021, when two major sections of aircraft were transported from St Athan in Wales to Cheshire. Today, the original flight deck of G≠CIVM lives on as a fixed≠base simulator and procedures trainer, equipped with her genuine instruments and avionics. Guests can take o and land at hundreds of airports worldwide, guided by a skilled instructor. Meanwhile, the addition of the Upper Deck cabin from G≠BYGG the final 747≠ 400 delivered to British Airways makes the experience truly unique. Visitors can relax in rows 60ñ64, once the most sought≠after seats in the sky, for dining events or private hire. With step≠free access and flexible space, 744 Experience also hosts corporate gatherings, team≠ building sessions, and exclusive events. Whether youíre fulfilling a lifelong dream to fly the Jumbo Jet or want to relive the golden age of air travel, The 744 Experience o ers something unforgettable.
Visit 744experience.co.uk for more information, or send them an email enquiry to enquiries@744experience.co.uk

The Gold & Silver Roadshow events head to Cheshire this month, an opportunity to cash in on a host of vintage objects
There will be three separate Gold & Silver Roadshows across Cheshire over the course of November, with special one≠day events being held at: Altrincham Conservative Club, 24≠30 Market Street, Altrincham, WA14 1PF on 1st November; and The Coach & Four, The Coach House, Alderley Road, Wilmslow, SK9 1QA on 13th and 25th November What can you expect at these events?
A Jewellery & Coin Roadshow will be held at the Bromborough Royal Oak. A very lucky couple called at one of their recent roadshow events with a couple of old gold chains and a silver charm bracelet and a bag of old silver coins. They were paid over £1,600 just for the coins alone. They turned out to be pre 1947 silver coins that were normal currency a few years ago and are now highly collected. Like most people, who can only dream of winning the pools or the lottery, a lot of normal households have a hidden treasure of old gold

jewellery, silver jewellery, teapots, trophies, trays and old objets díart. Why not get a free valuation from an expert at one of the roadshows?
There is no queuing and their experts will give you a one on one appraisal of the value of your treasured possessions in a private area, where there are no prying eyes, watching the process evolve. If you like the valuation, their expert will make you the same o er in cash which you can accept or decline at no cost to yourself. Anything can be an unearthed treasure. Any old British or foreign coins. Any old wrist watches or pocket watches. All chains, bracelets, rings and bangles broken or not and in any condition. If you think it is a diamond ring, bring

it along and they will confirm it to be genuine. If you have an old trophy or tankard or any silver coloured items, let them value them for you. Old war medals and old Masonic medals can be very valuable. You will be surprised to hear that they have paid thousands of pounds for certain war medals and even the General Service Medal group is worth bringing especially if you have the original box. Also of great interest are old military uniforms, tunics, hats and any army, navy or RAF field gear. There are rarely any queues at the events and they can normally o er a valuation within a few minutes. They will give you a free valuation on which they back up with a cash o er, there and then. Get looking now in your old drawers, cupboards, and jewellery boxes. Look in the loft and the cellar, even old broken or squashed items of jewellery and silver are valuable. Of particular interest are gold and silver cigarette cases, Vesta Cases, thimbles, candlesticks, trays and all things silver are needed. Pocket watches in gold and silver and all wristwatches by: Rolex, Cartier, Omega, Longine, IWC are particularly in demand.

Opening our Christmas special, Absolutely explores five of the best illuminated festive trails heading our way
Chester Zoo, 14 November≠3 January, 2026 chesterzoo.org
Chester Zooís Lanterns and Light returns in 2025, transforming the zooís grounds into a luminous night≠time wonderland.
From 14th November, the zoo will host immersive walk≠through installations, glowing tunnels, fire gardens, suspended kaleido stars, laser≠lit trees, and more.
Visitors wind their way between themed zones where animal shapes, vibrant ribbons of light, bubbles, and arches create dramatic visual scenes. The experience is made more immersive by the use of music, interactive elements, and creative lighting e ects intended to surprise and delight. New for 2025 are additional installations such as the ìBubble Walkî and expanded immersive walkways.
Along the route there are festive food stalls, occasional fairground rides, photo opportunities, and possibly even appearances from Father Christmas in themed zones. The event is family friendly and draws people of all ages. Because the trail spans the zoo, it o ers a mix of woodland, enclosure backdrops, and open spaces transformed by light.
Christmas at Dunham Massey
Dunham Massey, 13 November≠4January, 2026 nationaltrust.org.uk/christmas≠at≠ dunham≠massey
Christmas at Dunham Massey returns this winter with a host of newly revealed light installations, promising one of the most ambitious and visually striking editions of the after≠dark trail to date.
Now a staple of the North Westís festive calendar, the 2025 trail blends returning favourites with imaginative new commissions, transforming the historic National Trust estate into a walk≠through celebration of light, sound and seasonal storytelling. Among this yearís headline additions is the return of the much≠loved giant festive projections on the historic hall, back for the first time in over three years and set to be a key highlight for returning visitors.
A 30≠metre≠long Christmas Cathedral will once again provide a showstopping moment along the route, while a new installation titled ëTis The Seasoní, created by Output Arts, brings seven giant neon baubles to the estateís majestic trees. Inspired by classic decorations and childhood memories, these glowing spheres echo the treasured mid≠ century baubles still held in the Dunham Massey collection from the 1950s, when Roger Grey, 10th Earl of Stamford, and his mother, Penelope Grey, lived there.
Other debut features include Shatter, a striking collection of 50 illuminated shards up to four metres high, and Fish are Jumping, a playful series of 20 leaping fish by Dutch artists Studio TOER, courtesy of Light Art Collection who programme the annual Light Festival in Amsterdam.

Tatton Park, 15 November≠23 December yuletide.org.uk
Yuletide returns to Tatton Park for 2025, with a new ìGlittering Trailî that invites visitors into a world of winter folklore, performance, puppetry, and spectacle. This trail blends light art with narrative, transforming the gardens into a theatrical, enchanted realm after dark. As you stroll along the route, youíll pass through scented fire pits, illuminated pathways, and storytelling zones where characters from winter myths come alive. The ìYuletide Gatheringî area o ers spaces to warm up, enjoy seasonal food, and take part in community festive features.
The gardens and surrounding parkland at Tatton supply natural structure trees, hedgerows, water features which are reinterpreted through creative lighting, projections, and sculptural installations. The interplay of darkness and light is central, and the design ensures moments of quiet contrast with bursts of spectacle. Because this is a curated trail, weather and path conditions may come into play. Visitors are also encouraged to book in advance. For families, the narrative elements, musical accompaniment, and atmospheric detail make Yuletide more than just a walk it becomes a sensory journey through winter legend.

Blakemere / Cheshire Outdoors, 28 November≠24 December magicalwoodland.com/christmas
The Magical Woodland at Christmas promises a 15≠acre enchanted forest transformed by light, sound, and seasonal characters. The trail leads guests through dark woodland paths where interactive lighting, laser e ects, twinkling canopies, floating lanterns, and theatrical surprises await.
Along the route, you can expect to meet costumed characters (such as the Grinch or Scrooge), listen to immersive soundscapes, and perhaps glimpse a short appearance by Father Christmas himself.
The combination of forest ambience, projected visuals, and lit installations aims to transform familiar trees into magical silhouettes, while walks through tunnels of light or umbrella lantern sculptures add variety.
The event tends to attract families, couples, and those seeking a quieter festive illumination outside the bustle of big attractions. Because the woodland terrain can be uneven, itís advised to wear sturdy shoes, and accessibility should be checked in advance. The experience is immersive: the woods become a canvas for light to dance, surprise, and delight.
BeWILDerwood Cheshire, 29 November≠23 December bewilderwood.co.uk
BeWILDerwood Presents Christmas is a seasonal event held at the Cheshire location on select dates (29ñ30 November, 6ñ7 December, 13ñ14 December, and 19ñ23 December 2025) with evening timeslots starting from around 3pm to 6pm. This trail is especially designed for families
with younger children, combining sparkle, storytelling, and interactive moments.
The light walk (about one and a half hours in duration) winds through illuminated glades, under twinkling stars, and includes a mini pantomime midway to inject theatrical fun. Along the path youíll meet BeWILDerwoodís beloved characters, and have opportunities to spot Father Christmas in a magical nook. The blend of a light trail and live performance helps maintain engagement for younger visitors.

Jake Parry, Head Chef at Voyagers Restaurant & Bar in Liverpool, on building up a local institution from scratch
Q What first sparked your passion for cooking?
A Honestly, it wasnít the career path Iíd pictured for myself. As part of my Catering GCSE, I had to complete a weekís work experience in a kitchen. Straight away, I was hooked the buzz of service, the teamwork, the creativity. Nearly 17 years later, Iím still here, and I couldnít imagine doing anything else.
Q Were there any mentors or experiences early in your career that shaped your style as a chef?
A Definitely. Mark Owen and Hugh Jones, my first Head Chef and Sous Chef, along with Martin Owen, my first General Manager, shaped me massively not just as a chef, but as a person. They set the standards I still hold myself to today. They all still make the trip from Anglesey to visit The Halyard and Voyagers, which says a lot about the relationships we built.
Q What was the initial attraction of working at Voyagers?
A A friend introduced me to the
management team. I was excited to be part of something brand new, a project with no history or legacy just a blank canvas. When I came for my interview, the site was literally still a building site, and that challenge really appealed to me.
Q How would you describe the dining experience you want guests to have at Voyagers?
A We want guests to feel a sense of familiarity. Voyagers should be a place for all occasions a celebration dinner, a casual lunch, or even just somewhere to come when you donít want to cook at home, but still want to be looked after. Itís about being accessible without losing quality.
Q What is the culinary vision behind Voyagers, and how do you bring it to life on the plate?
A Our vision is to create small and large plates inspired by the many cultures Liverpool brings together. We donít tie ourselves to one cuisine youíll see influences from classic British and Asian dishes right through to modern
European cooking. We bring it to life on the plate by letting those flavours sit side by side, creating a menu that feels both familiar and exciting.
Q Where do you source your ingredients, and how important is locality and seasonality to your cooking?
A We source predominantly from the North West R Noone & Son in

ìWe create small and large plates inspired by the many cultures Liverpool brings togetherî

Stockport for fruit and veg, JC Altham in Morecambe for meat, and Neve in Fleetwood for fish. Seasonality is at the heart of our menus. Buying produce at its peak means better quality, better flavour, and better pricing which means our guests get the best of everything.
Q Is there a signature dish on the Voyagers menu that you feel best represents your ethos?

A Itís tough to choose between our salt & pepper chicken thigh, the nduja Scotch egg, or our sticky glazed short rib. Theyíve all been on the menu since we opened because theyíve become firm favourites, but we change elements of them with the seasons to keep them fresh and evolving.
Q What inspires you when designing new menus?
A I take a lot of inspiration from the wider industry especially what other restaurants are doing locally and from online trends. I think the industry has shifted away from cookbooks as the main source of ideas; now, itís
Instagram and TikTok that really drive inspiration and creativity.
Q Whatís been the biggest challenge in curating and maintaining the standards of Voyagers?
A The biggest challenge, and also the most rewarding, was building the restaurant and kitchen team from the ground up. When I started, Voyagers was just a building site, and I was the only chef. In previous Head Chef roles, Iíd stepped into existing operations with teams and processes already in place. Here, we had to create everything from scratch and thatís been hugely fulfilling.
Q What qualities do you look for when bringing new chefs into your brigade?
A For me, itís all about the person. Skills can be taught, but attitude and personality canít. If someone is a good person and fits well with the team, I can teach them how I like food cooked. Itís much harder to teach someone to be a decent teammate.
Q When youíre not cooking at Voyagers, where do you like to eat in Liverpool?
A I spent a lot of time in Maray, Madre, Belzan, and Salt House Tapas during the pre≠opening phase. More recently, 8 by Andrew Sheridan and Manifest are on my list Liverpool has such a strong food scene right now.
Q What excites you about the future of Liverpoolís food scene?
A Itís in a really good place. The city has evolved massively in recent years, and Iím excited to see more independents opening and pushing boundaries. Thereís a real sense of energy and momentum here.
Q What are you looking forward to most over the winter months?
A Autumn into winter is my favourite season for cooking and eating. The produce is incredible: root vegetables, wild mushrooms, slow≠braising cuts of meat. Those rich, warming flavours help us create a cosy, inviting atmosphere at Voyagers. Itís also a time where I can work with the team to refresh the menu, bring in new ideas, and really showcase the best of the season.

Q Can you tell us a bit about your journey into events management?
A There’s something about working with a client for months and seeing the event come to life after it all. I have picked up a lot along the way in my years in the industry of what works and what doesn’t. Being a one-person department can have its challenges, but I find it liberating to have the scope to make a client’s event exactly what they’ve asked for.

Q How do you approach planning an event that feels unique?
A I always approach event planning di erently for whoever I am helping plan the event for. No event is the same, just as no person is the same or has the same vision for what they want their event or function to be. I have been in the hospitality industry for 12 years and something I have always hated is rigidity and how quick people can be to say ‘we don’t do that’. I always try to find a solution to any request I have, if that means asking our Head Chef to create a di erent menu, I will do it. I also make sure I am there for the client from beginning to end. We have a fantastic team, but I always make sure I am present on the event day too so the client doesn’t feel abandoned.

Q As well as events manager at NINE Mill Street, you also manage the marketing side of the business, including the social media. Where do you draw inspiration for your marketing and social media ideas?
A Social media in this current digital age is so incredibly important to get right I believe. I make a real e ort to constantly research what is trending
but also, what is pulling people in. I put myself in the customers' shoes. I always start with what draws me in to a post, reel, website or business as a whole and develop that into an idea of how we can emulate but more importantly, do better. Right now, I am working on a campaign called ‘Meet the Team’ where each reel is dedicated to a member of our team. What people want to see is who is serving them and what dishes they recommend. Giving the business a personality is such an important thing. An upcoming project I am working on is our new menu launch. For this we will do a menu photoshoot and I am really looking forward to making this one the best we have done.

NDIPTYQUE

AKT’s revolutionary, aluminiumsalts free formula transforms from a luxurious, skin-nourishing balm into a dry, invisible powder: actively protecting, deodorising, and absorbing perspiration. aktlondon.com

o pain, no gain, they say. Well theyíre wrong about microblading, unless you count the two weekends a year where you might look like youíve overdone it slightly on the brows. Because thereís certainly no physical pain and the gains are significant. Before I took the plunge, my brows were terrible. Sparse, wonky, messy, asymmetrical. Still, I was afraid of permanently transforming them into dark, angular, fierce-looking arches but Karen Betts is not about that at all. Her approach to treatment is to replicate a natural look, and sheíll tell you that directly. In fact, sheíll refuse to give you what she deems the wrong brows. So what is microblading? Essentially, itís a tattoo. But microblading uses a blade-shaped tool with a row of tiny, barely visible needles to create hair-like strokes along your brows while depositing pigment into your skin. Traditional tattoos use ink, while microblading is done with safer pigment. These fade over time without changing colour. After an initial session my brows look quite intense (the awkward weekend) but tone down quickly, and a follow up appointment two months later ensures that results will last for about a year. ìIíll just book you in for this time next year then shall I?î asks Karenís assistant. The answerís a firm yes. Iím never going back to terrible brows.

A Our journey to Menorca began just over a year ago, when a client approached us with a full renovation project: a 1970s villa in a prime location on the island. They had specifically sought out our studio for our regenerative, biophilic design approach, focused on human wellbeing while restoring a sense of place. From the moment we started, it quickly became clear that Menorca was the place for us. As a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1993, the islandís protected character is deeply rooted in both its heritage and its future. That ethos resonated strongly with us as a B Corp≠certified studio. Not only did the island speak our language in terms of values, but we were welcomed with mutual respect into the homes and
hearts of the Menorcan community. What followed was more than a renovation. We found ourselves sharing knowledge, opening up new creative possibilities, and forming meaningful collaborations. It wasnít just about designing a home, it was about becoming part of a place that aligned perfectly with our ethos.
Q How does Menorcaís slower pace of life impact your creative process?
A Menorcaís slower pace profoundly shapes how we approach design. Here, the rhythm of life is unhurried, measured by natural cycles, the sun rising and setting, the tides shifting, the seasons unfolding gently. This invites us to slow down too, to move away from rushed deadlines or quick fixes and instead embrace a more thoughtful, deliberate process. We spend more time observing, how the light filters through olive groves at di erent times of day, how the breeze circulates

encourage living in harmony with Menorcaís climate. A key focus was creating a seamless flow between the interiors and the terraces, making the most of the mild Mediterranean weather and the spectacular views.
We also worked closely with local artisans and craftspeople to bring authenticity and detail to the project, from hand≠finished cabinetry to textured lime plasters. It was important to us that the house felt grounded in its place, respectful of Menorcaís heritage, while also o ering modern comfort and a fresh, calm aesthetic.
through a cove, how local materials weather and age with time. This patient observation allows ideas to evolve organically, guided by the place rather than imposed upon it.
The slower tempo also deepens our collaboration with local artisans and craftsmen. Thereís a generosity in the exchange of knowledge that only emerges when thereís time to listen and experiment. Together, we create work that feels authentic, timeless, and rooted in the islandís unique character.
Ultimately, Menorca teaches us that design is not just about the end result, itís about being present throughout the journey. The slower pace nurtures creativity that is more responsive, more connected to wellbeing, and more respectful of the land we are privileged to work within.
Q What are the biggest design challenges you face when working on projects?
A Working in Menorca brings unique challenges that require a thoughtful, flexible approach. One of the biggest is respecting the islandís protected status as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Every decision, from materials to construction methods, must honour the delicate balance between creating beautiful, functional spaces and preserving the landscape and local heritage. Being on an island also means resources
can be limited. Materials and specialist skills often need to be sourced locally or carefully imported, which means planning ahead and embracing creative solutions. This constraint encourages us to collaborate closely with local artisans and to use reclaimed or natural materials, which deepens the connection between design and place.
Every project brings its own unique challenges, but working on an island like Menorca adds a few special twists, starting with the weather. Just when you think youíve designed the perfect flow of light and breeze, a surprise gust or an unexpected downpour reminds you that Mother Nature has the final say. If only we could design a villa with guaranteed sunshine, right?
Q What can you tell us about your latest project in Menorca?
A Our latest project in Menorca was a truly exciting journey, a full renovation of a 1970s villa nestled in a beautiful, tranquil part of the island. The house had great bones, but needed a complete rethink to unlock its potential and better connect with the stunning surroundings. We approached the renovation with our regenerative, biophilic ethos at heart, bringing in natural materials sourced locally, enhancing natural light and airflow, and designing indoor≠outdoor spaces that
Ultimately, this project wasnít just a renovation, it was about reimagining a home that celebrates wellbeing, sustainability, and the unique spirit of Menorca. Itís a space designed to age gracefully and live lightly on the land, which feels deeply rewarding to be part of.

When actress and certified mind & body transformation coach Steph Waring first dreamed of transforming her Manchester home, she imagined bright, airy spaces defined by understated luxury. But turning that dream into reality took the expert eye of Lisa Hensby, founder of Lisa Hensby Design & Build Studio, who was brought in to reimagine the interiors and make the most of every detail. The connection came through a trusted recommendation. ìSteph had been planning a double extension for years, but hadnít found the right team to help her pull it together,î explains Lisa. ìI had worked on a project with her friend, actor Ross Adams from Hollyoaks, and Ross suggested she give me a call.î By the time Lisa joined, the plans had already been drawn up and approved, and the builders were on site handling the structural work. ìTechnically I wasnít needed until first fix electrics and plumbing, but I still kept a close eye on the build to make sure everything was heading in the right direction,î Lisa says.
Stephís wishlist was clear: she wanted a home that felt soothing and neutral, with black accents adding definition, and, above all, she wanted a kitchen island. ìShe had actually engaged a kitchen designer before I arrived,î says Lisa. ìBut the proposed island was long and slim. It would have been completely impractical. You wouldnít have been able to walk comfortably around it.î
Lisaís solution was both creative and practical: a circular island. ìIt gave us space for stools while still allowing people to move easily around the room. It became the striking centrepiece Steph wanted, but designed for real living.î
The island was custom≠built in oak and stained black, striking a contrast with the white cabinetry, which keeps the look fresh and forgiving. ìGloss units show fingerprints far too easily,î Lisa points out. Worktops and a splashback in Calacatta≠ style quartz deliver durability and a timeless, luxurious finish. To break up the white, darker wall units were introduced above the hob, a smart move that also disguised any cooking splashes. Black appliances and slim black inlays in the cabinetry pull the look together, giving the kitchen a tailored, contemporary edge.
One of the most dramatic transformations took place in the living room, where Lisa reworked the layout to improve both flow and light. The original doorway was removed and replaced with wider glazed double doors, opening the space visually and practically into the kitchen. Storage was also a key priority. The alcoves on either side of the chimney breast were underused, so Lisa reimagined the wall as a bespoke media unit. ìWe built the alcoves out so they are now big storage spaces and put the TV on the old chimney breast, with an electric fire beneath,î she explains. The result is a striking focal point that combines storage with a sleek, integrated finish. Steph was also keen to introduce panelling to the space, but as this wasnít a period property, Lisa knew it had to feel fresh rather than pastiche. ìWe used five di erent types of beading to add richness and depth, but kept the overall lines clean and modern,î she says. To prevent the panels from feeling flat, Lisa styled them with curated photography. ìPanelling doesnít always have to feel traditional, itís about layering
detail so the room has texture without overwhelming it,î she explains. Attention was also given to the bay window to ensure the space felt both functional and refined. ìWe kept the curved radiator beneath the bay, but painted it black so it became a feature rather than something to disguise,î Lisa explains. To finish the look, shutters were installed instead of full≠height curtains. ìCurtains always soften a space, but shutters brought sharper lines, more privacy control, and a timeless finish that worked beautifully with the clean, contemporary detailing,î she adds.
The hallway, long and narrow, could easily have felt like a forgotten corridor, a purely functional space with little character. Instead, Lisa transformed it into a striking design feature. Panelling runs along the lower half of the walls to provide continuity and structure. Above the panelling, a curated series of photographs and art pieces add personality and visual interest, creating a gallery≠like e ect that draws the eye as you move through the space.
A statement pendant from John Lewis, black≠painted radiator and banister subtly echo the homeís accent theme, linking the hallway to the kitchen and living room. The wool stair runner adds warmth underfoot, contrasting beautifully with the herringbone flooring, making the hallway
feel inviting rather than utilitarian. At the top of the stairs, a thoughtfully positioned mirror reflects natural light from the windows below, bouncing it around the narrow space and making the landing feel brighter and more spacious. ìBy layering texture, colour and carefully considered lighting, I have ensured the hallway is no longer a transitional space, but a welcoming introduction to the home,î says Lisa.
The flooring quietly unifies the entire ground floor. Lisa specified Karndeanís premium Art Select herringbone, bordered with a slim black design strip. ìThe flooring was one of the most important decisions in this project,î says Lisa. ìBecause we ran Karndean throughout the whole ground floor, it created a seamless flow between the kitchen, dining, hallway and living space. That continuity makes the house feel bigger, calmer and more cohesive.î
The design choice was not just about aesthetics. ìClients often underestimate how much flooring impacts the feel of a home. A consistent surface draws your eye through the rooms and avoids that choppy e ect you get when materials change from space to space,î Lisa explains. Durability was another key factor. The Karndean Art Select range features thicker, bevelled planks that mimic real wood but with added benefits:
water resistance, easy maintenance and the ability to withstand the wear and tear of pets. ìIt gives you the look of timber without the stress of constant upkeep,î Lisa says. ìItís a great example of practical luxury.î
Steph was keen to achieve a luxury look, but also loves a good high≠street shopping trip. Working together, she and Lisa mixed boutique and bespoke pieces with smart high≠street finds to strike the perfect balance. The dining table, chairs and bar stools in the kitchen came from Dusk, the sofas from Sofa Club, and a rug from Dunelm added warmth in the lounge. Accessories were carefully layered in from B&M, Minnie & Ted and John Lewis, creating a home that feels polished yet personal.
ìAccessories donít have to be expensive to look stylish,î says Lisa. ìItís about choosing pieces that work together and tell a story. Thatís what makes a home feel designed, rather than decorated.
ìSteph needed a home that worked for her lifestyle, not just one that looked good in photos.î The result is a renovation that strikes the perfect balance: sophisticated but comfortable, stylish yet functional. For Lisa, itís a showcase of her design philosophy that true luxury lies in the details, the flow, and the way a home makes you feel.

ìDESIGN IS ONE OF DENMARKíS MOST VISIBLE CULTURAL EXPORTSî

By PENDLEHARTE

Our long weekend in Copenhagen o ers a compact introduction to the cityís mix of history, design, and everyday culture. Staying at Villa Copenhagen, exploring by bike, and sampling food from bakeries and street markets creates a balanced picture of how the city lives today. Itís a fun, vibrant and stylish place.
Our base for the weekend is Villa Copenhagen, a hotel set in the cityís former central post o ce. Behind its neoclassical faÁade, the interiors are stripped back and contemporary: muted tones, natural materials and stylish design. The rooftop pool, heated year≠round, is one of its most distinctive features, o ering views over the rooftops. The hotelís sustainability initiatives energy≠e cient systems, recycled materials and locally sourced menus mirror broader urban priorities in Copenhagen.
The city is one of the worldís most bicycle≠friendly, and using Donkey Republic bikes demonstrates why. We download an app and book our bikes for 48 hours. If we have trouble identifying our orange bikes in a sea of similar ones, we don t need to search for numeric codes these bikes have names. Mine is Lydia. Dedicated lanes, separate tra c lights, and thoughtful infrastructure make cycling straightforward, even for visitors. On two wheels we re speeding around town, along the boulevards of Vesterbro, the canals and bridges of Christianshavn and the quieter residential streets of ÿsterbro.
Another essential perspective comes from a canalboat tour. Boats leave from Nyhavn, where 17th≠century houses line the waterfront. From the deck, the city appears calmer and more measured. The route includes the Opera House, the Black Diamond library, and the Little Mermaid statue, but the quieter moments along the way stand out: bridges at eye level, houseboats clustered along the edges, and the sight of residents using the waterfront as an everyday gathering place.
Within Christianshavn lies Freetown Christiania, established in the 1970s and still maintaining its semi≠autonomous identity. The area is marked by murals, handmade houses, gardens, and workshops. Streets are lined with improvised structures and art, creating an atmosphere distinct from the polished architecture of the city centre. It s a fascinating insight into a utopian community.
Design is one of Denmarkís most visible cultural exports, and the Designmuseum Danmark presents its history in depth. The collection includes classic furniture by designers such as Arne Jacobsen and Finn Juhl, lighting by Poul Henningsen, as well as ceramics, textiles, and contemporary work. The displays emphasise not only the aesthetics of Danish design but its guiding principles: functionality, sustainability, and attention to everyday use.
No stay in Copenhagen is complete without sampling its bakeries. Hart Bageri, founded by former Noma baker Richard Hart, is among the most celebrated.

ìA FORMER INDUSTRIAL SITE IS NOW REPURPOSED AS A CREATIVE HUBî
Its specialties include sourdough loaves, pastries flavored with cardamom or seasonal fruits, and laminated doughs that draw locals and visitors alike.

For a contrasting food experience, Re en, located on Refshale¯en, brings together dozens of street food stalls from around the world. The market occupies a former industrial site, now repurposed as a creative hub. Visitors find options ranging from bao buns and Nepali dumplings to tacos and reimagined Danish classics. Long communal tables, live music, and harbour views create a casual, open≠air atmosphere. Sustainability is a central focus, with many stalls committed to zero≠waste practices and environmentally friendly packaging. A long weekend is enough to establish a rhythm: mornings that start with cycling, afternoons shaped by water or design, evenings ending with food by the harbour. What emerges is not a single image, but a layered impression of a city that operates smoothly while leaving space for creativity and variety. Copenhagen, we love you.

Young creatives are being sought to help relaunch Pyramid Arts Centre following a £5m revamp
Aunique opportunity that gives young people real≠life experience of managing events at a professional level is returning to Warrington. Anyone aged between 16 and 21 who lives or studies in the town and is interested in arts and culture are encouraged to apply for Culture Warringtonís Young Producers scheme, which is entering its third year. Young Producers was originally launched in 2024 as a way for more young people to get their foot in the door of the creative industries. Another of the initiativeís aims is to retain and nurture homegrown talent by providing quality new experiences for young people to develop skills in areas like project management, event production, marketing, budgeting and teamwork. Applications for the new cohort opened

in September, and will see the team work on events until summer next year with full training and support. In particular they will have the incredible opportunity of helping with the relaunch of Pyramid Arts Centre, which is currently closed as part of a £4.9million redevelopment project. Altogether, there have been 24 Young
Producers so far over two intakes and mentor Laura Mercer says she has seen each of them blossom as part of the process. ìBy the end theyíre like di!erent people,î Laura says. ìTheyíre confident talking to everyone, theyíre bursting with ideas and they can problem solve and think on their feet to come up with creative solutions.î
As well as supporting plans for Pyramid Arts Centre, the new Young Producers will get to learn from industry professionals, lead on their own events and play a major role at Warrington Arts Festival 2026.
But it often doesnít stop there. Some of the previous teams have had wider opportunities such as working behind≠ the≠scenes at Neighbourhood Weekender, taking up jobs at Parr Hall, helping to produce touring shows and supporting other Warrington events such as Mela.
Lizzy Thomson even got a job with Culture Warrington as an Assistant Producer after being part of the original cohort. Laura says: ìLizzy shone through as such a talent, and we didnít want to let her go! But itís not just Lizzy, weíve seen all our Young Producers grow in confidence and itís been a privilege to help them find the paths they want to take for their future careers. Weíre hoping to meet many more amazing young people through this current intake.î
Lizzy, a Great Sankey resident who studied Production Arts at Priestley College, says: ìEvery day I feel so lucky to be part of the team. Even the small things like how you conduct meetings and how you speak to artists was so interesting and I feel like Iíve learnt so much thanks to the support of the team. Theyíve been so lovely and I really feel like Iíve built my skills. Itís really powered me to go into the creative industries. Before I was a bit
unsure of what to do. I was going to get an apprenticeship and it all fell through so to have this first≠hand experience with Culture Warrington is just incredible.î
One of Lizzyís favourite parts of being a producer is taking an idea from a concept all the way through to a successful event. Highlights have included playing a key role in this yearís Family Garden Party at Warrington Arts Festival, becoming creative lead for the Elf Experience and Grotto as part of Warringtonís Weekend Wonderland and organising Scratch Night, which gives emerging performing artists the chance to test out new ideas live on stage.
The 20≠year≠old has also become a peer mentor for current Young Producers supporting them with projects like Warrington Arts Festivalís ëMade By Meí film festival which they conceived and organised from the ground up.
Lizzy adds: ìItís nice that Iíve been able to stay connected with the Young Producers while taking on some additional responsibilities behind≠the≠ scenes. Iíve found that I thrive in that environment. There becomes a point where their eyes open and they just ëget ití. They become driven by a desire to be collaborative and helpful and throw themselves at every opportunity.î
Laura concludes: ìItís amazing when the Young Producers are in a room together and realise they have the same passions. Theyíre so collaborative they share skills and bounce ideas o! each other, and I always say I can see them keeping in touch and working together on professional projects in 10 yearsí time. Thatís whatís so special about it.î

Absolutely revisits five success stories from across our local schools
MURVAH IQBAL
Co≠founder of HIVED
Attended: Manchester High School
When I think back to growing up in Manchester and attending Manchester High School for Girls, I can see how much those years shaped who I am today ambitious, curious, and maybe a little restless. I didnít know exactly what I wanted to do back then, but I knew I wanted to build something of my own.
Growing up, I was surrounded by business. My uncles ran Archieís, a fast≠food chain that started as one small restaurant and grew into a national brand. From age 15 to 21, I ran the social media accounts while studying and playing football.
During that time, Archieís became a multi≠million≠pound company, and I got to see what happens when vision and hard work come together. That experience taught me to dream big, stay close to people, and never shy away from the unknown.
After university in London, I almost took a consulting job; it seemed like the ìsafeî path. But deep down I knew it wasnít for
me, so my now co≠founder Mathias and I started exploring startup ideas. We had noticed how fast ecommerce was growing in London, where every few cars on the road seemed to be a delivery van. That led us to start our first company, Vanvas, which placed advertising on delivery vans. We were tracking these vans every day and saw just how inefficient, polluting, and unfair the delivery system really

was, which became the foundation for our company HIVED, which provides high≠quality, modern parcel delivery for some of the biggest global brands. When Mathias and I first started HIVED, it was just the two of us delivering parcels from my flat. Today, HIVED is one of the fastest≠growing startups in Europe, delivering for brands like Nespresso and John Lewis and operating the only end≠ to≠end all≠electric fleet in the UK. Our customers love the service we provide, and our growth plans for the coming years arenít slowing down. Through it all, Manchester is still at the heart of everything I do. Itís where I learned grit and grounded ambition, and where I captained Manchester City Ladies until U17s, an experience that taught me teamwork, resilience, and how to lead with purpose. If thereís one message Iíd share with anyone still at school, itís this: you donít have to have it all figured out. Just keep following your curiosity, trust yourself, and start somewhere thatís where the magic happens.

Classical Singer
Attended: Abbey Gate College
For Old Saightonian Emily Burnett, Abbey Gate Collegeís ethos ìNurturing Personal Excellenceî is more than words on a wall it was a daily reality during her time at school. ìTeachers didnít just want us to reach academic targets,î she recalls. ìThey helped us discover our individuality and encouraged us to aim high, refine our craft, and believe that excellence is personal as well as professional.î
During her time at the College, Emilyís passion for music was given every opportunity to flourish. From gala concerts and chapel services to ensemble work and solo performances, she honed not only her voice but also her confidence, resilience, and artistic identity. Those early experiences performing before an audience, receiving constructive feedback, and learning the discipline required to balance rehearsals with studies laid the foundations for her future career as a classical singer.
That foundation has certainly borne fruit. Emily went on to train at the Royal College of Music and became one half of the classical crossover duo Belle Voci. Their talent captured national attention when they reached the final of The Voice UK on ITV a moment Emily describes as ìan unforgettable test of resilience, teamwork and artistryî.
Since then, Emily has performed the national anthem at Wembley Stadium and even for Queen Camilla. To current students, Emily o!ers advice with characteristic honesty and humour: ìTake every performance opportunity, stay disciplined, and remember that no one else can sound like you. HANNAH GIBSON
CEO, Ocado Retail
Attended: The King;s School, Macclesfield
When former Head Girl of The Kingís School in Macclesfield, Hannah Gibson (nÈe Roberts), returned to her old school this year, her message to pupils was simple but powerful: ìEmbrace change.î
Now Chief Executive O cer of Ocado Retail, Hannahís journey from the classrooms of Kingís to the corridors of power at No.10 Downing Street is one of energy, curiosity and a lifelong love of learning qualities she says were nurtured at Kingís. A straight≠A student and First Team hockey player, Hannah threw herself into every opportunity the school o!ered and went on to study Politics and Economics at Cambridge, before embarking on a career that has taken her from senior policy adviser to Prime Minister David Cameron to leading one of the UKís most innovative online retailers.
Speaking to Kingís pupils earlier this year, Hannah shared three key lessons for success: ìGive it your all,î ìEmbrace change,î and ìDonít be afraid to ask for help.î Reflecting on her career, she noted

"IAMPROUD TO BE BACK WHERE IT ALLBEGAN"
how fast the world has evolved from life before iPhones and working at No.10 as it was only just getting Wi≠Fi, to managing a company where robots pick groceries for over 500,000 weekly deliveries.
Now a mother of three young boys, and heading a team of 900, Hannah balances a demanding career with family life. Her philosophy is rooted in teamwork and passion: ìThe people who are most successful are those who really care who want to do more.î
Head of Kingís School, Jason Slack, summed it up best: ìHannah is a wonderful role model hard≠working, driven, and innovative, yet deeply aware of the challenges facing young people today.î
From Bollington to the boardroom, Hannah Gibson continues to inspire the next generation to dream big, welcome opportunities and embrace change.
Director of Marketing, Admissions and Development at The Queenís School
Attended: The Queenís School
Returning to Queenís after nearly two decades working across global markets marks a meaningful full≠circle moment for Hilary. She has built a career in brand working with agencies like Edelman and M&C Saatchi across Europe and Asia spanning roles from summer intern on the Fulham Road to MD in Singapore. Variety has been her constant. There have been high≠gloss moments: launching celebrity gyms, shifting public perceptions for governments, and helping FTSE100 leaders tell more compelling corporate stories. And the surreal ones: from airline stunts flying giant haggises out of Scotland to chasing runaway artists down a highway mid≠awards ceremony.
Now, back in Cheshire as both a mum and as part of a passionate team leading Queenís into its next chapter Hilary is reconnecting with alumnae doing extraordinary things, from international law to haute couture, and bringing their stories into the classroom to inspire future female leaders.
ìThis is the place where I first found the confidence to step up and try new things. Sport, school plays, work experience, choir (more enthusiasm than talent) Queenís gave me the freedom to explore, lead, and have a go.î
The school is buzzing with energy and ambition. A new state≠of≠the≠art astro pitch, opened by GB hockey star Hollie Pearne≠ Webb, and the launch of sports scholarships are just the start with plenty more in the pipeline. ìIím proud to be back where it all began, helping shape what comes next.î

"ST ANSELM'S IS A UNIQUE PLACEAND ONCE AN ANSELMIAN ITIS PART OF YOURLIFE FOREVER"
Professional Rugby Union player
Attended: St Anselmís College
Simon Mason attended St Anselmís between 1985 and 1992. Many of his family attended the College, including his uncle Joe Duffy who was Chair of Governors in the 1970s before emigrating to America and becoming a prominent scientist on the NASA Spaceship Programme.
Simon was part of an incredibly successful period in the Collegeís sporting history and he was one of several pupils during this era that went on to play international Rugby Union. This included his schoolboy teammate British & Irish Lion Austin Healey.
Simon left St Anselmís and attended Leeds Metropolitan University gaining a BSc Hons degree in Building Surveying in 1996. During this period, he rose to prominence playing for Ireland Under 21s, Newcastle and then Orrell, and made his debut for Ireland in the Five Nations Championship. He was one of the first players to sign a professional contract with the Irish Rugby Football Union. Simon had a distinguished
professional Rugby Union career scoring over 3,000 points across a ten≠year spell. He played rugby in the English Premiership before becoming a pivotal member of the 1999 Ulster European Cup win. He was named Irish Rugby Player of the Year before moving to Stade Francais and then Benetton Treviso where he won two Italian Championships.

He has become an inspirational and dedicated PE teacher overseeing the Collegeís rich and vibrant extra≠curricular programme. Last season the College reached its first national rugby final.
Simon has also created an alumni network bringing together generations of Anselmians. ìSt Anselmís is a unique place and once an Anselmian it is part of your life forever,î he says. ìIt has been a sense of pride to see the generosity of so many of our alumni. Without their support and sponsorship we just simply could not provide the experiences and opportunities we do for our pupils. Especially the ones who need financial support.î
