As summer approaches, Ashley Rudd says there is nowhere else she would rather be
This summer, I’ll be spending a few days in one of my favourite corners of the UK, the enchanting Cheshire, for some indulgence, nostalgia, and full-circle moments.
Top of the itinerary? A trip to Chester Picturehouse to watch 28 Years Later, the much-anticipated film directed by Danny Boyle. This new instalment picks up nearly three decades after the original outbreak, exploring a world where survivors have adapted to life among the infected. The stellar
cast features Liverpool icon and fellow North West woman, Jodie Comer, in a leading role. No summer escape is complete without a little indulgence, and mine will come in the form of a visit to Champagne + Fromage on Watergate Street in Chester. Think creamy French brie, sharp mature cheddar, and wedges of stilton just waiting to be paired with a glass of chilled bubbles. A journey through the heart of France’s culinary traditions, right in the heart of Cheshire.
Another highlight? A visit to Combermere Abbey, a true gem nestled in the Cheshire countryside. With over 900 years of history, the Abbey feels like something out of a gothic novel. The gardens are perfectly manicured, and the estate is steeped in heritage. While there, I have my eye on the Summer Chef’s Table, an exclusive culinary experience hosted in the Abbey’s surroundings. This isn’t just a meal; it’s a celebration of seasonal ingredients, expertly paired wines, and exceptional service. Whether you’re dipping your toe into fine dining or looking for a special moment to share with loved ones, this event promises to be truly memorable.
So that’s my Cheshire summer in a nutshell: nostalgic, decadent, and completely perfect. From cinema seats to garden strolls, clinking glasses to camera rolls, I’ll be soaking in every second, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

LIFE AT 40(ISH)
Liverpudlian comedian Sophie McCartney on hypnotherapy, children and ghosting
By MARK KEBBLE
When I turned 40, I had a huge wobble. I had arranged a big party, but when the day came along I didn’t want to be there. I ended up getting incredibly drunk, doing an impromptu speech thanking my football club but not my wife (an oversight), before doing an odd mosh with my older brother to the music of Underworld at 1am. The next day was horrendous, but at least I am not alone.
“I turned 40 last May and I knew I was going to wobble,” nods Sophie McCartney. “I had a wobble at 30 due to its proximity to 40! I knew I wasn’t going to take it well. I didn’t want a party, then got annoyed that nobody had even tried to throw me a party. I ended up throwing myself a party, a really last minute Ibiza themed party
in Warrington… The whole day I just felt tainted, ruined by the fact I was 40.”
The big day came along only two months after Sophie finished her first ever stand up tour, a reminder of which is behind her now in her Cheshire home. “This is not where this should live,” Sophie laughs about the huge Tired and Tested tour promo leaning against the wall. “My husband was clearing out the cellar because that is his favourite thing to do, throw stu away. I said I don’t want you to throw this away, but there was a part of me saying, I don’t know what I am going to do with a gigantic ad of my first tour…”
It’s a useful reminder that Sophie is still, relatively speaking, new to this stand up game, but the seeds were sown at a relatively young age. “I was quite an annoying child,” she smiles. “When your parents had a dinner party, did you ever make them all sit through a show? I have to say, now, karma has come back round as my kids do it to me, but they charge me! 50p a
ticket, non-refundable, no complaints, you just have to sit there, and they start it about 18 times as they get the beginning bit wrong.
“I didn’t do drama, I did a bit of dancing, but I remember my Uncle Dave – a Peter Kay moment, not my real uncle – saying to me when I was quite young that I should do stand up comedy. It was just something that stuck in my brain. I wouldn’t have ever had the confidence to then do anything about it had it not been for my lead in through social media. I went o and lived a di erent life, went to university, got a degree in public relations, went o down to London and started a life in the media, but I very quickly ascertained that was not the life for me. I was trapped then in a job, you have a mortgage, you have got responsibilities, you can’t just jack in your job – then I fell pregnant so I could jack in my job! I wanted to go back part-time, but that was rejected as it was 2013 and working part-time was not a thing. That kind of put me in a position about what else I could do.
“The perimenopause is a prequel nobody asked for”
“I loved motherhood, but I realised very quickly when my second child came along and I was home with both of them that I felt like I needed something a little more for me. So that led me on to blogging, old school, and those articles used to get a really good traction. Then I started showing them on socials, then people commented on them, so I thought maybe I might be funny, maybe it’s not just Uncle Dave. Then I started some videos and quickly grew a good following – then the real catalyst for me to get on stage was I was approached by Britain’s Got Talent to do stand up.”
This, however, was a big leap for Sophie. “At this point I had never done it, I wanted to do it but I was too scared. And there was not one part of me that wanted to go and stand on stage in front of Simon Cowell, on national TV, and be humiliated. But there was a bit of me that thought, ‘do you know what, I am going to run with this and just see what I get’. They were super casual, come along and do some comedy roadshows, it’s going to be producers, a warm audience, you are not going to be thrown to the lions in a comedy club. So I went along and was thrown to the lions… It was at the Frog & Bucket in Manchester. I prepared a 10-15 minute set and just went for it. I was there against seasoned pros and I won the round and I was like ‘oh, OK’. I loved it! I had to have hypnotherapy before it, I had such a fear of the stage, I had three sessions and whether it does work or whether I thought it worked I don’t know, but I went and nailed this set. From then on in, I was OK. I like this, people like this, this is what I want to do. I would love if in however many years I happen to be sitting on Graham Norton’s sofa and Simon Cowell is there next to me, because I actually went through a few more stages and then they ghosted me. By this point I was happy with my lot, I would like to think I’d say ‘thank you so much for your production crew ghosting me’!”
Unsurprisingly, her debut tour centred around motherhood – she had a third baby which meant the tour was delayed by a year – but, now, age takes the stage in One Foot in the Rave. “I wanted to explore the reason why I was so bothered about the fact I was 40. I have no health issues, I have got three beautiful children, I have got a husband for now dependent
on how often I keep slagging him o in my performances, so actually what have I got to grumble about? It still jarred with me, so I wanted to delve into that.
“I think it’s more the change and the unknown, especially for women hitting 40, there is a lot for us now that starts to kick o ,” she adds. “There is the peri-menopause – a sh*t prequel nobody asked for, and none of us knew this was a thing in our 20s and 30s. I had parked menopause till well into my 50s and now somebody has brought the panic forward by 10 years. Now all my friends, every conversation is like ‘did you know this is a sign of the peri-menopause?’
“I started looking at divorce rates, and the divorce rates peak for women in their 40s, and women in their 40s instigate divorce because there are links between your oestrogen levels and who you would pick to mate with. So if you don’t need to mate with that person any more, who are you? Am I going to wake up one morning, look at my husband and he’s going to give me the ick? Then I will have to get a divorce, and I don’t have enough time in my diary for a divorce, who is going to have the kids, who is going to get custody of the dog…
“So all this stu just started manifesting in my brain that I needed to get out. And the more I spoke to other people, the more I realised they felt the same way. So a lot of the show is delving into that flick, I guess, of complete irrational behaviour of turning 40. I do come full circle to this realisation, now that I am actually here, I think the worry was worse than the moment. She says, when at the weekend I turn 41…”
Sophie was due on stage in Glasgow to mark her 41st, so hopefully that helped distract her. With two best-selling books behind her (she is currently writing her third), and a successful podcast now too, dare I ask where she sees herself at 50?
“I want to continue touring, continue with my stand-up and hone the craft, do more TV stu , would love for my fiction works to make it on to a screen, and there have been some conversations about the previous book. I would love to write scripts, dive into other areas of comedy… A big ticklist before 50!” But, she adds with a laugh: “No more children, though.”

Brought to Life, the first immersive art experience of a UK national collection, is now open to the public at MediaCity in Greater Manchester, running until Sunday 31st August, ahead of a planned national tour with dates to be announced.
Created by FRAMELESS Creative, the UK’s leading creator of immersive experiences, and inspired by the National Portrait Gallery’s Collection, this groundbreaking new immersive, cinematic show promises to redefine the gallery experience, with an emotionally charged spectacle that pushes the boundaries of creative storytelling.
Visitors will step into a world where the sitters’ stories come alive. This unique experience explores the fascinating lives behind some of the most iconic faces from the National Portrait Gallery’s Collection
who have shaped the UK’s history and culture. From royalty and cultural icons to fearless leaders and national heroes, past and present, their stories will unfold in an unforgettable journey that fuses the best of art, technology and powerful human storytelling.
The artist Emma Ferrer, granddaughter of Audrey Hepburn, was amongst the first visitors to Stories – Brought to Life, featuring Jane Austen, David Bowie, Winston Churchill, Charles Darwin, Queen Elizabeth I, Queen Elizabeth II, Ncuti Gatwa, Audrey Hepburn, Dorothy Hodgkin, Mai, Nelson Mandela, Emmeline Pankhurst, Grayson Perry, Mary Seacole, William Shakespeare, Amy Winehouse, Oscar Wilde, Virginia Woolf and Malala Yousafzai.
The stories will be presented on a spectacular scale, travelling across specially created frames, drawing on unprecedented access to industry leading visual e ects, music and imagery, to give visitors a new way to experience
some of the stories that form part of the National Portrait Gallery’s Collection.
Victoria Siddall, Director, National Portrait Gallery, says: “Our history has always been one of innovation, so we are excited to partner with FRAMELESS on this groundbreaking immersive experience featuring some of the extraordinary people in our Collection. I am grateful to everyone who has worked so hard to bring this project to life, and of course to the families, representatives and sitters themselves who have so generously allowed us to tell their stories and to take them to audiences outside our walls.”
Ryan Atwood, Creative Director for FRAMELESS Creative, took Absolutely behind the scenes and explained a little more about how this unique experience came to life. It truly is an eye-opening and awe-inspiring one.
Q What originally inspired this experience?
A The National Portrait Gallery has a long history of innovation and the conversation started between us both several years ago when they were looking to take their incredible Collection outside of the Gallery walls, bring the portraits to life in new ways and to engage audiences with art and culture across the UK. There was so much inspiration sitting within the Collection, which features some of the most iconic faces to ever have lived, from royalty and cultural icons to fearless leaders and national heroes both past and present.
The set design was a big creative moment for me. I went into the National Portrait Gallery and saw all these di erentsized frames and immediately thought, “this is the set design”. We’ve been able to play with new dimensions and depth by projecting across those various sizes to get an anamorphic e ect.
It’s unique, fun, and a direct nod to the National Portrait Gallery. It was one of those moments. I just walked in and thought, “I know what the set design should be”. The process since has been very organic.
Q How long has the experience been in the making?
A We’ve been in discussions about this new partnership for several years and were approached by the National Portrait Gallery when they started considering the possibilities around creating an immersive experience of the Collection. Since then our teams have worked tirelessly together to create what you see in the Experience, with our FRAMELESS team being able to tap into the vast historical and curatorial expertise of the National Portrait Gallery team.
Q How does the immersive experience work?
A Stories – Brought to Life takes you on an engaging and enlightening multisensory journey to explore the lives of the sitters depicted in each portrait. The Experience unframes and animates the original artwork, leaving you feeling inspired by these incredible people, past and present. Combining the Gallery’s world-leading expertise in art and history with the FRAMELESS team’s storytelling skills, the Experience incorporates the highestquality digital technology, visual e ects and the latest audio technology to create an unparalleled encounter with some of the world’s most famous personalities. Each fascinating account is told through a short vignette, which travels over a multitude of screens around the space, allowing the narrative to weave around you. Our team – comprising of researchers, world class animators, Hollywood visual e ects specialists, music and spatial sound designers, composers and writers – have delved deep into the life stories of the individuals to bring them to life, creating an emotional ebb and flow that runs throughout the Experience. The result is a cinematic journey, akin to a Hollywood-style movie based on the craft of the creative team.
Q Can you pick out three portraits and explain what people will discover?
and strength, and we’ve used animated tapestries to tell her story, paired with music that builds in intensity as her journey unfolds. She’s become a beacon for women in education so it’s an honour to feature her.
Charles Darwin, his early years were filled with adventure which influenced his entire career. We’ve brought his world changing story to life with animated pages from The Origin of Species and stunning audio and visual e ects.
Grayson Perry, a brilliant and unique artist, his self-portrait work is a real “map of life” reflecting his inner thoughts, not just his appearance and we guide you through that psychological journey, supported by his voice and carefully composed music.
Q Will there be surprises in the experience?
A Definitely. We have 19 sitters, and each one brings a di erent emotional tone; some are adventurous, whereas others are sombre or reflective. Take, for example, Virginia Woolf’s story, which is deeply emotional. There is a whole lot to discover with all 19 sitters. This is a 360 cinematic
experience, complete with all the ebbs and flows of a Hollywood-style movie.
Q What’s o ered for schools and students?
A We o er a range of visit options for education groups, including guided tours, self-led visits, and relaxed sessions that suit learners from KS2 right through to university. We also provide teaching resources and online materials to help make the most of the visit. Students can also access a 25% o discount on tickets.
Q Who is this experience perfect for?
A Everyone. At FRAMELESS we believe art is for everyone, a view shared by our friends at the National Portrait Gallery. For some people galleries can feel intimidating, but we want to bridge the gap with this experience by creating something cinematic that can act as a gateway to spark an interest in art more broadly, even encouraging visitors to seek out the original artwork in the Gallery.

Selling a HOME
Andrew Clark, partner at SAS Daniels LLP, outlines how sellers can help speed up the property transaction
Selling a home can be stressful and timeconsuming particularly without the assistance of a proactive and experienced property lawyer. One of the most e ective ways to speed up a property sale is to instruct a property lawyer at the same time as instructing a selling agent. This allows key legal preparations to begin early. Your lawyer should be sent a copy of the selling agent’s sales brochure for comment as soon as possible before your property is marketed. This is particularly relevant if the selling agent wants to include a plan showing the extent of the property on the sales particulars. Your lawyer should check the plans carefully to ensure they are accurate and match the Title Plan in the registered title.
If you’re selling a leasehold property, obtaining the information to enable the Leasehold Information Pack to be received from the freeholder/management company as soon as a buyer is found is advisable as these packs often take three to four weeks to be issued. As well as the above the following should also be addressed and provided:
• Obtain the deeds bundle/papers from any previous solicitors.
• Provide ID and compliance documents for legal checks.
• Provide mortgage details so that a check can be made with the lender.
• Complete the Law Society’s Protocol form of questionnaire, the Property Information Form (and, if leasehold, a Leasehold Information Form).
• Obtain up to date service records for any central heating boiler, and heating installation or appliance along with guarantee paperwork and a building regulation completion certification relating to its installation.
• Obtain up to date Electrical Installation Inspection Reports along with any certificates of installation and compliance papers under building regulations.
• Obtain any relevant Planning Decision Notices.
• Obtain any guarantees for installations at the property and their terms checked.
While these actions may incur costs, it will inevitably speed up the transaction by identifying prior to marketing, any title issues or missing paperwork.
HOW CAN A PROPERTY LAWYER HELP
Carrying out such an exercise before or during the process of marketing the property may well avoid delays occurring once a buyer has been found. Missing paperwork and indemnity insurance needs can be identified well in advance. Instructing a property lawyer early in the process, can help avoid delays, and make the transaction far less stressful for everyone involved.

A very lucky couple called at one of their recent roadshow events with a couple of old gold chains and a silver charm bracelet and a bag of old silver coins. They were paid over £1,600 just for the coins alone. They turned out to be pre 1947 silver coins that were normal currency a few years ago and are now highly collected. Like most people, who can only dream of winning the pools or the lottery, a lot of normal
households have a hidden treasure of old gold jewellery, silver jewellery, teapots, trophies, trays and old objets d’art. Why not get a free valuation from an expert at one of the roadshows?
There is no queuing and their experts will give you a one on one appraisal of the value of your treasured possessions in a private area, where there are no prying eyes, watching the process evolve. If you like the valuation, their expert will make you the same o er in cash which you can accept or decline at no cost to yourself. Anything can be an unearthed treasure. Any old British or foreign coins. Any old wrist watches or pocket watches. All chains, bracelets, rings and bangles broken or not and in any
condition. If you think it is a diamond ring, bring it along and they will confirm it to be genuine. If you have an old trophy or tankard or any silver coloured items, let them value them for you. Old war medals and old Masonic medals can be very valuable. You will be surprised to hear that they have paid thousands of pounds for certain war medals and even the General Service Medal group is worth bringing especially if you have the original box. Also of great interest are old military uniforms, tunics, hats and any army, navy or RAF field gear. There are rarely any queues at the events and they can normally o er a valuation within a few minutes. They will give you a free valuation on which they back up with a cash o er, there and then. Get looking now in your old drawers, cupboards, and jewellery boxes. Look in the loft and the cellar, even old broken or squashed items of jewellery and silver are valuable. Of particular interest are gold and silver cigarette cases, Vesta Cases, thimbles, candlesticks, trays and all things silver are needed. Pocket watches in gold and silver and all wristwatches by: Rolex, Cartier, Omega, Longine, IWC are particularly in demand. 07378 965411 / goldandsilverroadshow.co.uk

VISION ON A PLATE
Skof has quickly become one of the hottest restaurants in the North West. The man behind it, Tom Barnes, tells us how it all came together
Tom Barnes is as ambitious as he is down-to-earth. After almost 20 years working as a chef at some of the world’s best restaurants, Tom finally fulfilled his lifelong ambition by opening his own restaurant, Skof.
Since opening in May 2024, Skof earned a Michelin star in February 2025, was named Best New Restaurant at the Good Food Guide Awards 2025, won Newcomer of the Year at the Manchester Food and Drink Awards –where Tom was also awarded Chef of the Year – and secured a high ranking in SquareMeal’s Top 100 for 2025, entering as the highest new entry at number 8. It’s easy to see why. At Skof, there are no conventions, no dress codes – just great food and great vibes, in a casual and beautifully designed space, much like the city they’ve chosen as their home.
Tom is known for his tasty, modern British cooking. Each of his dishes has been created to be full of flavour, surprise and will bring a smile to your face. Seasonality, locality and the best possible produce are a given, it’s the skill, precision, and care that go into each dish that sets them apart.
Tom has been working as a chef since the age of 15 and has fine-tuned his skills in high quality Michelin starred restaurants including L’Enclume (2*) in the Lake District and Geranium (3*) in Copenhagen. “The main thing is always flavour,” Tom has said of his culinary philosophy. “Some of our dishes are deceptively simple.” It encapsulates Skof’s down-to-earth approach to service: pretension has no place in Tom’s vision of fine dining – and Absolutely just had to find out more.
Q You started cooking at 15 – what inspired you to get into the kitchen?
A I wasn’t brilliant at school, but I always loved cooking with my Grandma – she was a brilliant cook and was always up to something in the kitchen. I didn’t have a plan when I was at school, Mum found me an apprenticeship in a local kitchen and I just fell in love with the whole thing.
Q Before you worked for Simon Rogan, what other chefs helped to shape your career?
A My first head chef, Duncan Collinge at The Lakeside Hotel – he was an amazing mentor and a fantastic teacher. He taught me properly and thoroughly, and really laid the foundations for the rest of my career. I spent some time with Phil Howard at The Square and as a winner of the Roux Scholarship,
I’ve been incredibly lucky to have had a lot of support from the Roux family themselves.
Q Did you and Simon hit it o from the start?
A Simon and I work well together because we’ve got a similar drive. We’re always looking to be better and to push the flavours of a dish. It all stems back to that really.
Q During that time you also won the Roux Scholarship – how big was that for you?
A The Roux Scholarship is a life-changing thing for a young chef, the experience is hugely testing and you have to be very disciplined in your preparation; but the reality of being able to ask for advice from the Roux family is invaluable.
Q Why was the time right to go it alone and launch your own restaurant?
A I’d met my partner and was living in Manchester and commuting to Cartmel. Simon, Sam Ward (managing director of UMBEL Restaurants), and I had been talking for a long time about how I might be able to set something up under my own name and Manchester just felt like the right place, right time for me!
Q Did you have an immediate idea of what Skof would be, or did it develop over time?
A Skof is a real representation of my career, everything I’ve learned and a lot of the people I’ve met, but there’s a lot of me in there too – the playlist is so important, it really sets the tone for how I want the guests to feel, it’s relaxed and light-hearted. I’ve also got a dish on the menu which is dedicated to my dad, who was known as
THE TEAM AT SKOF
Barney, and also a table named for my mam, Bernie. It’s a special place for me.
Q Why Manchester?
A Manchester is really thriving and the food scene is going from strength to strength and I wanted to be a part of that. It’s such a welcoming city, the restaurants here have opened their arms to us and made us feel so at home. It’s a real privilege to be able to o er our kind of cooking in the city centre.
Q You have just celebrated a year since opening the doors to Skof: how do you reflect on the past 12 months?
A We’ve barely stopped to take a breath if I’m honest! Even though it’s been really busy, I’ve loved every moment of it. It’s been so much fun and we’ve had a lot of laughs, we’re just thrilled with the reception from our guests.
Q What do the many accolades that have come your way mean to you?
A The world, and more than anything it’s wonderful for me to be able to show the team how much their work is recognised. They’re a young team who are detailed, passionate and deeply talented.
Q Why was a tasting menu the right approach for you?
A A tasting menu gives us so much creative freedom, we can tweak and edit dishes in line with tiny changes to produce and really showcase the beautiful things our suppliers send our way. For those wanting something a little shorter, we do o er a lunch menu too. It’s four courses, so you
still get a really great experience and we can showcase our cooking in slightly larger portion sizes. It’s great because it’s like a window to what we do; it allows some people to come and try Skof, and then come back for the full tasting menu if they enjoy it.
Q What dishes do you particularly love right now and why?
A The lightly set miso custard, hen of the woods mushroom, tru e, mushroom dashi has become a bit of a signature dish in the restaurant, it’s been on since we opened and we get so
much lovely feedback about it. I’d say that’s my favourite at the moment.
Q What ambitions do you have for Skof?
A I just want to make everything the best that it can be and that our team loves what they do. It’s massively important to me that they’re happy so I’m always looking for ways to make their time at work more enjoyable. We’re lucky and grateful to have a busy restaurant at the moment and we’ll continue to push on, to keep it that way!

DINNER
Home cooking by Rosie Kellett
Savoury Sweetcorn French Toast with
Cherry Tomato Salsa
Serves 6
Savoury will always win over sweet for me, but no more so than in a French toast recipe. This version is creamy, substantial, has an acidic hit from the salsa and – like all the best things – is topped with a shower of grated cheese. This is one of my favourite savoury breakfasts and is a great crowd-pleaser. I have to credit Stacey O'Gorman as the inspiration for this recipe - it was one of her regular lunch creations for the Meringue Girls team and I have been trying to do it justice ever since she moved back to New Zealand.
INGREDIENTS
For the salsa
• 300g cherry tomatoes, finely diced
• ½ red onion, finely diced juice of l lime
• A bunch of soft herbs: coriander, flat-leaf parsley or dill, or a mix of all three, roughly chopped
• 1 green chilli, finely diced, including the seeds if you like a kick
• A glug of extra virgin olive oil
• A good pinch of flaky sea salt and a grind of black pepper
For the French toast
• 6 eggs
• 1 small tin of sweetcorn (165g drained weight)
• 1 tsp sea salt
• ½ tsp black pepper
• ½ tsp smoked paprika
• 6 slices of thick-cut white bread (use gluten-free bread to keep this recipe GF)
• butter, for frying
• 50g strong Cheddar cheese, grated
• hot sauce (optional)
METHOD
1 Make the salsa first, by combining all the ingredients in a bowl and setting it to one side to marinate.
2 Crack all the eggs into a large bowl, and add the drained sweetcorn, salt, pepper and paprika. Blend the mixture with a stick blender until silky and smooth.
3 Submerge each slice of bread in the batter to coat.
4 Heat a little butter in a frying pan over a medium heat and fry each slice of bread until golden brown and crisp on both sides, adding more butter to the pan when needed.
5 Serve each slice with a little grated Cheddar, a generous helping of salsa and perhaps some hot sauce on the side.
Citrus Mackerel Spaghetti with Pangrattato
Serves 6
This recipe was born, like the best of them, out of necessity. While living with my first boyfriend in my early 20s, we existed almost exclusively off BLTs and a version of this pasta. Tinned fish and dried pasta were affordable, and this recipe became a staple dinner. It's for the cash poor and the time poor, yet it's serving big time flavour. It's made up of pantry staples and will be on the table in less than half an hour.
INGREDIENTS
• 200g stale bread
• 100ml extra virgin olive oil
• 1 clove of garlic, minced
• 500g dried spaghetti
• 4 x 125g tins of mackerel in olive oil, drained and broken up
• 1 x 180g jar of capers, drained and finely chopped
• 2 tsp chilli flakes
• Zest and juice of 3 lemons
• A large bunch of flat-leaf parsley, leaves and stalks finely chopped
• Sea salt and ground black pepper
METHOD
1 First make the pangrattato by blitzing the bread into breadcrumbs in a food processor.
2 In a frying pan, over a medium heat, heat a tablespoon of the olive oil and fry the breadcrumbs with the garlic until golden brown and crisp. I like to take them pretty dark, bordering on a little burned, but you do you.
3 Cook the spaghetti in well-salted, boiling water until al dente.
4 Put the mackerel, capers, chilli flakes, lemon zest and juice, most of the parsley and half the olive oil into a large mixing bowl and combine thoroughly.
5 Drain the pasta, reserving a little of the water, and add it to the mackerel mixture.
6 Mix vigorously, adding a little pasta water and more olive oil if it seems too dry. You should end up with a glossy sauce that clings to the pasta.
7 Serve on a large platter, topped with the pangrattato and the rest of the chopped parsley.
“It's dreamy with a dollop of creme fraiche on a warm summer's day”
Browned Butter, Almond, Summer Fruit Cake
Serves 8 generously
This cake is the epitome of summer: it's sticky, jammy, fresh and not too sweet. The browned butter and ground almonds give it a beautiful nuttiness and it's just dreamy with a dollop of creme fraiche on top, on a warm summer's day.
INGREDIENTS
• 250g unsalted butter
• 370g icing sugar, sifted
• 200g ground almonds
• 8og plain flour
• A pinch of sea salt
• 220g egg whites
• 3 tsp vanilla extract
• 100g berries
• 1 ripe peach, sliced into half-moons
• Creme fraiche, to serve
METHOD
1 Preheat the oven to 170°C/150°C fan. Grease and line a 21cm round tin.
2 Melt the butter in a saucepan over a medium-high heat and continue to cook until it starts to brown, swirling the pan and keeping an eye on it so it doesn't turn from brown to burnt. Once the milk solids have gone a nutty brown, take the pan o the heat and leave to cool.
3 Whisk together the icing sugar, ground almonds, plain flour and salt in a large bowl.
4 Add the egg whites and vanilla and stir until combined, then add the cooled brown butter and mix again.
5 Pour the batter into the tin and put the tin into the fridge for 15 minutes until the batter has slightly firmed up.
6 Sprinkle the fruit on top, pressing the berries and slices of peach
halfway into the
7 Bake for 1 hour 15 minutes, covering loosely with foil after 50 minutes so it doesn't brown too much on top.
1 Let the cake cool completely in the tin, then serve with a light dusting of icing sugar and a dollop of creme fraiche.

healing process. Each treatment
here are a lot of terrible eyebrows out there. And a lot of beautiful ones. Getting it right is the di erence between looking your best and looking awful – or just strange. I have been worrying about my brows for some time – why so sparse? Are they disappearing? – and pencilling them in daily is not my best skill. But when I meet Karen Betts’ assistant, Sue, in Alderley Edge, I’m a bit defensive, because I know exactly what I don’t want. No heavy, angular brows for me please. No brows that look like they’ve been done. I needn’t have worried. Karen is all about the natural brow – and she will in fact refuse to deliver those terrible eyebrows that I fear. Even if I wanted them. Many of her clients come to her with alopecia, or after cancer treatment, because her skill lies in creating beautiful, and – importantly – natural-looking brows. “Less is more,” she says. The process is essentially tattooing, she says – and it’s less painful than threading. First she draws on what she thinks my brows should look like, and we negotiate a bit on length and width – and then she uses her personally designed ink tool to imprint the colour on my brows. It takes about ten minutes in total and feels a bit scratchy – but chatting to Karen is so entertaining that I barely notice. Immediate results are far more intense than the final fade, and for the next few days I receive helpful texts updating me on the healing process. Each treatment requires a single top up in a few weeks, so watch this space.

Wood craft
the making
Kaare Klint presented The English Chair at the Cabinetmakers’ Autumn Exhibition in Copenhagen in 1931. He was inspired by old English chairs from the 18th century – it was typical for him to revisit existing designs in order to optimise them. In The English Chair, Klint has masterfully used wood as a decorative element by incorporating it as a contrasting material on the chair legs and in the form of advanced intarsia on the armrests, backrest and under the seat. The back, sides and seat are made of French canework, and it takes a skilful weaver almost a week to complete just one chair.
Today, the English Chair is crafted according to the finest cabinetmaking techniques by the skilled master cabinetmakers and apprentices at The Lab, Carl Hansen
& Son’s in-house apprentice workshop at the company’s furniture factory on Funen in Denmark. Here, the apprentices learn about original woodworking techniques and are taught to perform traditional cabinetmaking tasks such as selecting wood from the sawmill, measuring the wood up with hand-held templates, cutting the wood on a traditional band saw, working with a spokeshave, upholstery and much more. Although the design of The English Chair is refined and pared back on first glance, the complexity of the craftsmanship is incredibly high. All the wood of the English Chair is carefully handpicked. Each raw plank is meticulously scrutinised to find the perfect piece without any faults or cracks. When the flawless plank is found, the model templates are measured by hand and cut out from the same board. Here, the chair is made from a piece of oak which gives a Nordic, temporary expression, but the chair can be made in any wood type.
A look at Kaare Klint’s English Chair in
It takes almost a week to
After being measured, the wood is cut on stationary milling and routing machines with traditional routing templates, just like cabinetmakers did 100 years ago. The delicate intarsias are cut and fitted by hand with a block plane, which demands great precision and many small adjustments. Once the intarsia is carefully glued into the frame, a card scraper is used to ensure a smooth surface.
The chair’s frame is assembled with mortise and tenon joints by hand. Like in traditional cabinetmaking, all parts are glued together without any use of screws or dowels: a complex assembly that ensures great strength. Afterwards, the glue is left to dry before the holes for the French cane weave are drilled. It takes one cabinetmaker a full eight hours to drill a total of 300 holes by hand.
The English Chair is surface treated the traditional way, resulting in an extremely durable wooden surface with great depth and as smooth as silk. At first, the chair is carefully sanded starting from 120-grit and moving all the way up to 320-grit. Then, the grains are raised with water and intermediate sanded twice. This ensures clean pores, a soft surface and an even distribution of the oil. Afterwards, the chair is treated with the first coat of

Danish linseed oil, intermediate sanded, a second coat of oil, then sanded one last time before a coat of oil and lacquer is applied. Finally, the surface is buffed and polished with lambswool.
The English Chair is branded with a custom-made branding iron and delivered with a brass plate engraved with the chair’s unique serial number. After the surface treatment, the French cane weaving starts. It takes 14 working days to complete the back, seat and sides of one English Chair in a delicate pattern. The back and seat cushion is upholstered by hand. The anillin leather is handpicked from the finest tanneries and carefully examined for marks. Cushions are made with traditional upholstery techniques and the leather is sewn by hand on the front, back and sides.
Each English Chair is delivered with an owner certificate and a handwritten note from the CEO of Carl Hansen & Søn, Knud Erik Hansen.

LET'S play
Lisa Barnes, founder of Cheshire-based Emmie B Interiors, takes Absolutely behind the scenes of a magical transformation
Emmie B Interiors is a luxury interior designer in Cheshire. Whether designing a single room or undertaking a complete home renovation, they approach every project with creativity and miraculous attention to detail to achieve harmony in all aspects of the space – as showcased by this stunning playroom transformation. The company’s founder, Lisa Barnes, tells us how they did it.
Q Was the brief for this playroom a rather unique one for Emmie B, or have you done plenty of projects like this?
A Most definitely yes, this was a unique brief. We have previously worked on projects which have included nurseries and children’s bedrooms, but not specifically a playroom on this scale. Our client’s brief for this project was to transform a room that was being used as a home gym into a magical playroom for their two granddaughters. A wish list was given to us which included a
slide (suitable for both children and adults), designated craft and reading areas, a bespoke doll’s house and a pampering and dressing up area. Another major requirement was to include plenty of storage space and, very importantly, provide an area to position their special and much-loved rocking horse.
Q Is it fun working on such a project?
A Yes, it was immense fun, as it was a slight departure from our usual interior design projects and involved delving into a fascinating world of children’s minds and imagination. Designing and creating the bespoke doll’s house was particularly fun. Who would have thought you can get wallpaper specifically scaled to fit the size of the house together with such detailed fixtures and fittings. Working with such vibrant colours was very uplifting and testing the slide once installed was especially great fun for us!
Q Were there any challenges you had to overcome on the project?
A There were certainly some challenges that had to be overcome. For example, to successfully execute the design and features we wished to include, varying ceiling heights and a sloping roof had to be worked around. The slide was a little tricky as making it fit without taking up the whole room was a challenge. We had to explore various options as the trajectory of the slide had to be exact; the solution was to use a spiral design which fitted perfectly. The whole playroom design posed some challenges in terms of fitting everything into the room and meeting the client’s brief, but it was an interesting and exciting challenge and one that we very much embraced and enjoyed.
Q What, for you, is the stand out part of the final design?
A The stand out feature has to be the design and build of the playhouse, an innovative and striking part of the room. It was constructed on two levels to create two distinctive areas and maximise space. Padded arched panels were installed for leaning against whilst reading, a space for sleeping was
It involved delving into a fascinating world of children's minds
included together with clever storage including drawers in the staircase. Little touches like the pretty window boxes add to the charm and of course the inclusion of the all-important slide –pink in colour and spiral in design. Sustainability was something that we were very conscious of and we were extremely happy with what we managed to achieve to meet the criteria. Approximately 95% of the paint used was water based, and many of the fabrics are made from recycled products and the expertly crafted cabinetry is made from sustainable materials. We also wanted to future proof the playroom so it could easily be adapted as the girls grow up, therefore most of the materials throughout can be recycled, upcycled and reused.
Q Are there any little design touches that pleased you that we might not notice straight away?
A The playroom has an abundance of features and design touches, some of which have already been mentioned. All the cupboards which are designed like houses have windows cut out and have lighting built in which are illuminated in the dark. Others include the incorporation of lots of clever storage, a hanging egg chair, wardrobe space for dressingup outfits, a special notice board for displaying artistic creations, and all the delightful, detailed and carefully curated accessories in the bespoke doll’s house that also lights up inside.
Q On the opposite end of the scale, have you finished or are working on any big projects in Cheshire?
A We are currently working on a number of exciting new interior design projects throughout Cheshire, Merseyside and Cumbria. This is a good time of year to be busy to ensure that projects are completed well in advance of Christmas deadlines!

finishing TOUCHES
For 25 years, Susie Watson Designs has been the go-to for beautiful pieces for the home. The founder discusses evolution, inspiration and Knutsford
Avisit to the Susie Watson Designs outlet in Knutsford is an eyeopening experience. Everywhere you look there are stunning creations and a wealth of choice for any interior scheme. But what’s clear is that this all stems from a love for design.
This year, Susie Watson celebrates 25 years in business and she has become known for everything from interior design schemes to perfect pottery pieces, working with highly skilled artisans along the way. Here, she tells Absolutely how the business came to be and why she won’t be swayed by trendled reviews any time soon.
Q Before launching your own business, were you involved in the interiors industry?
A Yes, I worked alongside my husband refurbishing houses in central London.
We had a small team of builders, focusing mainly on structural changes, kitchens, and bathrooms. I also mixed my own paint colours, which was my first real exploration into design.
Q Was the industry very different then?
A Absolutely. Design and interiors have evolved tremendously since those early days.
Q What inspired you to go it alone and launch Susie Watson Designs?
A I have always been self-employed, so starting my own business felt natural. The idea took shape when we opened an art gallery in London. I was keen to explore art beyond traditional paintings and saw an opportunity to create something more holistic.
Q Was it challenging to get the company off the ground?
A Yes, incredibly. Starting a business is always difficult, and I had no experience
in retail. I also faced challenges with people attempting to copy my pottery designs, which was both upsetting and a steep learning curve.
Q From the outset, what did you want to offer?
A I wanted to broaden the idea of art
beyond paintings and offer beautifully designed, handmade products that bring joy to everyday life. Good design should be accessible and enrich the spaces we live in.
Q How do you reflect on those first few years?
A They were tough – though, fortunately, you don’t fully realise it at the time! Passion and perseverance kept me going.
Q How has the business evolved over the past 25 years?
A We’ve built a skilled team of artisans in India and Sri Lanka, allowing us to refine and expand our designs. In the UK, we collaborate with a fantastic sofa maker and produce our wool throws in Yorkshire. Finding the right people and developing products takes time, but it’s incredibly rewarding.
Opening stores, designing interiors, and building teams who genuinely care about our products have also been key. A great deal of our success stems from the
dedication of our teams – whether in the shops, at head office, or in the workshops where our pieces come to life.
Q Why did you decide to open a shop in Cheshire?
A We were keen to have a showroom in Cheshire and Yorkshire. We took a stand at the RHS at Tatton Park many years ago and we all loved Knutsford. We were looking for a nice space.
Q What made Knutsford the perfect location?
A It’s such an attractive town and incredibly well positioned close to the M6 so easy access from The Wirral and North Wales, but also close to Manchester and the surrounding towns. The restaurants were always humming when we went up there and it appeared to be a really vibrant market town.
Q What can customers expect to find in the Knutsford store?
A We have a good selection of everything we make in Knutsford. There is quite a good size fabric showroom, a lighting room and space for lots of furniture.
Q What’s new at Susie Watson Designs?
A We’re introducing new embroidered fabrics, fine art prints, and wall hangings to our collection, along with more ceramics and cushions. There’s always something exciting in the works.
Q Are there any particular trends you’re noticing this year?
A We don’t follow trends. Decorating a home is a significant investment, and we believe good design should be timeless rather than trend-driven.
Q Are you planning anything special for your 25th anniversary?
A Yes! This summer, we’re bringing back our much-loved strawberry ceramics, one of our earliest designs. Customers still ask for them, and ‘Oscar,’ our very first design, remains a bestseller.
Q What’s next for you?
A Our ideas are always evolving. I never follow a rigid long-term plan – one idea naturally leads to another, and that’s how the business has grown so far.

Garden furniture trends: a look at style, function, and sustainability
SUSTAINABILITY AND ECO-CONSCIOUS CHOICES
With a rising awareness of environmental issues, many people are choosing furniture made from eco-friendly materials such as recycled wood, bamboo, and sustainable metals. Companies are also moving towards materials that are durable and weather-resistant, ensuring that their products have longevity, reducing the need for constant replacements.
Timber furniture, often reclaimed or responsibly sourced, has become a statement of not only style, but also a commitment to ethical consumption. Similarly, woven outdoor seating crafted from recycled plastics and eco-friendly textiles is gaining popularity, providing both comfort and a reduced environmental footprint. Many people are opting for upcycled designs that tell a story of regeneration rather than waste.
The concept of sustainability also extends to the circular economy. Many garden furniture brands are taking steps to create products that are repairable and recyclable. As the capital becomes more eco-conscious, London’s garden spaces refl ect a sense of envi-
ronmental responsibility, where beauty and sustainability go hand in hand.
BOLD AND ECLECTIC DESIGNS
While minimalist Scandinavian-inspired garden furniture has had its moment, 2025 is seeing a resurgence of bold, eclectic designs that mix vibrant colours, textures, and patterns. Playful, statement pieces include brightly coloured furniture sets, neon cushions and geometric shapes, transforming gardens into dynamic extensions of the interior.
Garden furniture has become an extension of home décor, and lots of highend pieces blur the lines between the two. Think plush outdoor sofas adorned with velvet cushions or wicker lounges paired with rich, deep tones of green and gold. We are rethinking the boundaries of outdoor space, turning gardens into a continuation of our personal style. Another facet of this boldness is the use of multi-functional furniture that encourages a more fl uid use of space. Multi-tiered planters, modular seating arrangements, and foldable tables that can shift between casual and formal settings allow for fl exible outdoor living.
MANY GARDEN FURNITURE BRANDS ARE CREATING PRODUCTS THAT ARE REPAIRABLE AND RECYCLABLE
SMART AND
TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS
Gardens are becoming increasingly hightech. Whether it’s through built-in solar panels, Bluetooth speakers, or self-watering planters, the integration of technology in garden furniture is an undeniable trend. Smart garden lighting is one of the most popular tech-forward additions, with outdoor lights that can be controlled via smartphone apps or voice assistants. Additionally, many outdoor heating solutions, such as sleek fi repits or eco-friendly outdoor heaters, are designed with built-in smart thermostats for maximum comfort.
THE RISE OF MULTI-PURPOSE FURNITURE
Benches that double as storage, coffee tables with built-in fi re pits, and foldable chairs that can be tucked away when not in use are all gaining traction. These functional pieces allow residents to maximise their outdoor spaces while still maintaining an air of elegance. Our love for practicality and multi-functionality in design has bled into our gardens, ensuring that each piece of furniture has a clear purpose.
NATURAL MATERIALS
AND TEXTURES
Rattan, teak, and stone have become ubiquitous in outdoor spaces, evoking a rustic, earthy vibe that feels at one with nature.
SMART GARDEN
LIGHTING IS
ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR TECH-FORWARD
ADDITIONS
The trend towards natural materials isn’t just about aesthetics – it’s about fostering a connection with the environment, allowing the furniture to age gracefully and blend into the garden landscape.
OUTDOOR DINING: A LIFESTYLE CHOICE
The demand for stylish yet functional dining sets is growing. Dining tables with extendable leaves, comfortable
armchairs, and built-in seating arrangements make outdoor dining an experience in itself. From chic bistro sets to large, family-style tables, dining al fresco has become an integral part of our outdoor culture. With the unpredictable British weather, these dining sets are designed with durability and practicality in mind, often featuring weather-resistant cushions, rust-proof frames, and weather-tight finishes.

SSun shade
Why yellow is the interiors colour of the moment
oft, warm, uplifting. A colour that’s been on everyone’s fashion radar for the past year, butter yellow has now permeated into interiors. More than a transient trend, this playful yet sophisticated shade is fast becoming a staple for living spaces, bathrooms and kitchens. But what is it about this understated pastel that suggests it’s here to stay?
Yellow is often considered a cheerful and energising colour, but it can also be surprisingly calming in interiors when used thoughtfully. The key to its calming effect lies in the warmth and soft tones of yellow, which evoke feelings of happiness and op -
timism without overwhelming the senses. Soft shades like pale butter or mustard can create a serene atmosphere, especially when combined with natural light. These lighter hues have a gentle vibrancy that can brighten a space without being too intense, making them ideal for relaxation areas such as living rooms or bedrooms. Yellow is also closely associated with nature, often reminding us of sunshine, golden fields, and blooming flowers, which can have a grounding and peaceful effect. When incorporated into interiors, yellow can enhance the sense of warmth and comfort, fostering a welcoming and harmonious environment.
Furthermore, yellow has been shown to stimulate mental clarity and creativity, which contributes to an overall sense of
well-being. When balanced with neutral tones or paired with calming accents like light greens or blues, yellow helps create a balanced, tranquil space that feels both inviting and peaceful. Therefore, when used in moderation and in the right tones, yellow can be a wonderfully calming colour for interior design.
Louise Ashdown, Head of Design at West One Bathrooms, explains: “Butter yellow is a fresh alternative to classic white, and has translated perfectly into bathrooms, wet rooms and shower rooms. A less daunting choice than dark or bold colour for sanitaryware, glossy ceramic designs in this softer sunny tone reflect the light and introduce a sense of warmth into a space. It can be a real mood booster when you get up in the morning.
DAVID HUNT LIGHTING
“For us, a pared-back mango shade has given the butter yellow trend a really grown-up feel. Paired with everything from crisp white to strong reds, blues and greens, it’s surprisingly versatile and works in rooms of all styles, from retro spaces to cool contemporary homes. While it’s big in 2025, we can see this colour standing the test of time – after all, it’s hard to tire of a colour that’s both uplifting and understated.”
Grazzie Wilson, Head of Creative at Ca’Pietra, continues: “We can’t get enough of the butter yellow trend in tiling. The
into the darkest of rooms. Such a celebratory colour, it’s hard to feel anything but optimistic. Who wouldn’t want to be transported to sunnier shores, all year round? And our simple square glazed tile in a soft buttery shade works in a classic chequerboard pattern – period homes or anyone channelling the cottage-core look will love the subtle warmth and timeless style this look introduces.”
best thing is that it doesn’t restrict the rest of the room in terms of style inspiration. Take hexagonal stripe tiles – a crisp mix of yellow and white, they are stunning for a shower or splashback. Laid to create a vertical, horizontal or diagonal design – or even a bold chevron – the soft butter yellow colour takes on a vintage vibe or ultra-modern look, you can really personalise it to your room.
“In a completely different vein, our rustic lemon grove inspired collection, Nonna’s Kitchen Sorrento, uses yellow to bring the warmth of Italian sunshine
Keeley Sutcliffe, Design Manager at BC Designs, adds: “Choosing the colour for a freestanding bath can be really tricky – it’s an investment piece so naturally, you’ll want to get the balance between longevity and statement style. I’m a big believer that butter yellow ticks both boxes. As an accent colour, its milky tones are subtle yet wonderfully warm – and it can blend into a room with a period, modern or retro style.”
Keeley concludes: “Whether it’s for a space bathed in natural light or a north facing room, a yellow bath introduces just the right amount of colour – you could say it’s a new neutral. Team with crisp white, pops of brighter shades or tone it down with wood finishes, it’s fabulously versatile. We’re seeing it paired with sleek chrome fittings – a finish that’s having its own renaissance – to reflect the buttery yellow colour back into the room.”

Hannah
Barnes explores the art of mixed-era styling
In the world of interior design, one trend is quietly redefining the way we think about decorating our homes: mixed-era styling. It’s an approach that breaks the mould of single-style spaces by skilfully blending pieces from different time periods, resulting in interiors which feel personal, layered, and full of interesting character.
Gone are the days when every room needed to stick strictly to mid-century modern or Victorian sensibilities. Now, a Louis XVI armchair can sit comfortably beside a contemporary floor lamp, and a 1970s teak sideboard can live happily beneath a digital TV frame.
At first glance, combining pieces from disparate design periods might sound like a recipe for chaos. But when done right, it leads to a home that reflects individuality and tells a story. Mixed-era styling works because it adds depth and personality, balances visual interest with contrast, breaks the monotony of matching sets and allows us to incorporate family heirlooms or travel finds. Unlike design movements that come and go, this trend feels timeless – because it’s not really a trend. It’s a practice rooted in collecting, curating, and the human desire for self-expression. So, how do you achieve the look?
START WITH A STRONG BASE
To keep a room from feeling disjointed, start with a strong base style or architectural framework. For example, a neutral Scandinavian backdrop provides the perfect canvas for showcasing bolder, older pieces. Alternatively, a classical room with ornate trim or panelling can be revitalized with contemporary art or minimalist lighting. I like to choose one era to anchor the space and to provide consistency, then add accents from other periods to create contrast.
CONTRAST IS KEY
Great mixed-era spaces thrive on contrast. Think a Baroque gilded mirror above a clean-lined console table, a sleek coffee table paired with a washed-out Persian rug or Industrial chairs sitting around an antique farmhouse table.
I like to often use contrast in materials as well, to create visual and tactile interest, such as velvet next to metal, or polished surfaces next to roughsawn wood.
COMMON PITFALLS (AND HOW TO AVOID THEM)
Having too much clutter: Mixed-era does not mean maximalist by default. Leave breathing room between key items so they can shine and hand select your favourite key pieces.
Creating a lack of cohesion: Use colour, scale, or texture to tie the look together, and trickle tones throughout each space to tie them together seamlessly.
Ignoring the functionality: Some vintage items, whilst beautiful, just don’t hold up to daily life. Make sure to test drawer runners, check wiring, and reupholster padding if needed. This can present an opportunity to add an unexpected contemporary twist to older pieces, such as a modern print on an heirloom armchair, making it uniquely yours.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Mixed-era styling is less about perfection and more about personal curation. So trust your eye, mix with intention, and embrace a little rebellion. In an age of fast trends and soulless cookie-cutter decor, it’s a deeply human way to design, honouring the old, welcoming the new, and celebrating the beauty in between.

Q What inspired you and your husband to launch Acorn Leisure Holiday Parks?
A It began in 1997 with our first park, Ty Bont – a small but much-loved location that laid the foundation for everything that followed. Peter, my husband, has known holiday parks his whole life and had the vision for Maes Mynan Park over 30 years ago. It took more than a decade to acquire the site – a former sand and gravel quarry – but it’s now a beautifully restored haven in the heart of North Wales. We’ve designed and built every park ourselves, with Peter leading development and our small team bringing it all to life.
Q How are you o ering something di erent?
A Our approach has always been to work with the land, not against it. Peter’s expertise in development, logistics and caravan transport means our parks are beautifully laid out for both form and

Pretour, I’d checked into the Bulgari Hotel Roma and it had made an impression. Would my husband notice if I abandoned the tour to hotfoot it back to our suite?
Gap year journeys are harder to fund and justify these days, especially since so much of the world is no longer o the beaten track or unsullied by tourism. No wonder some students decide to take a di erent tack and embark on voyage of discovery of a di erent kind with John Hall Venice.
GRAND TOUR
Discovering treasures of the art world with John Hall Venice broadens minds, boosts CVs and o ers the joy of learning for its own sake
The company was founded in 1965 (when going abroad was much more arduous) to give young people taking a gap year a mind-broadening arts experience before they started university. Rather like the Grand Tour of the 18th and 19th centuries, it centred on the artistic and cultural treasures of Italy.
Today, the programme covers pretty much the same tried and trusted ground, while continuing its tradition of delivering eye-opening content. It consists of a week in London, six weeks in Venice, a week in Florence and a week in Rome. For participants, the heart of the experience is Venice, a city they spend enough time in to feel more like residents than tourists – it becomes a real cultural immersion.
“Not only are you living in one of the most beautiful cities on earth, but you will look at the world slightly di erently after having done it,” says Eliza, a recent alumna. “It was so liberating to learn for the joy of it.”
The programme spans painting, sculpture, architecture, music, world
cinema, literature and global issues, all delivered by experts. There are practical classes in studio life drawing and portraiture, as well as classes in photography, Italian language and cookery.
Around 3,000 students have attended the course over the years – second and now third generation students are now signing up, proof of the profound impact it had on their parents and grandparents.
One of the best things about the John Hall Venice course is the number of 'privileged' access visits, arranged thanks to inside contacts. These might typically include a tour of Venice’s San Marco by night, and the Vatican – including the Sistine Chapel. Talks by passionate and knowledgeable specialists, including curators, opera directors, conductors, composers and art historians, add extralevel insights. These are designed to build

understanding and a love of the arts – and open eyes and minds. “We were exposed to a grand scope of artistic expression.
The lectures themselves touch upon Venetian art, contemporary art, film, opera, classical music, philosophy, poetry… the list could go on,” says alumnus Hamish.
Lecturers and speakers joining John Hall Venice Faculty on a regular basis speak volumes about the depth and range. From journalist and art critic Louisa Buck to architect Andrew Tyley, art historian and curator Dr Claudia Tobin and Renaissance specialist and University of Leicester Emeritus Professor of Art History and Film History David Ekserdjian, it’s a weighty list.
Cultural insights are unforgettable, but the experience of getting to know three of Italy’s great cities – Florence, Rome and Venice – remains equally memorable. “We meandered around the cities with icecreams or hot chocolates in hand, getting to know the back streets and canals of Italy like any local. It was such a treat having countless wonders on your doorstep,” adds Hamish. “It was beyond a privilege to spend that time falling in love with Italy.”
The programme also fosters strong friendships among people with a shared
interest – and gives exposure to universitylevel perspectives. All this is hugely helpful in building a CV – purposeful travel to study does sound better than a month on the beach in Bali. This benefits any student preparing for a Fine Art or History of Art degree, of course, but it’s brilliant for potential historians, musicians, architects, engineers and scientists, too. Intellectual curiosity and interests beyond your specialist knowledge are always valued by universities and employers.
This year marks the Diamond Jubilee of the John Hall Venice programme and its website houses a fascinating photo archive of previous courses, dating right back to those 1960s pioneers. For sure, travel is much easier today – with cheap and plentiful flights bringing Europe within everyone’s range – but going in Grand Tour style to explore Italy’s cultural treasures remains just as enriching an adventure as ever it was.
