Tsmall one). That top hat is on show in
hirteen. Unlucky for some, but that's the number of years I have been married to my wonderful wife (comedians of yesteryear would probably say something disparaging, but I won't sink to those levels). Despite being 13 years ago, it's amazing the number of times our wedding comes up when meeting friends and family. There was the photo booth, one of the first things that we decided to spend money on and I am so happy we did. Not too long ago I was at a friend's house for dinner and I noticed on the wall a picture from the booth of him and his wife pulling the most ridiculous faces. That made me smile a lot. There was my gag of buying my father a huge top hat, which linked to the importance in the family (although as my cousin pointed out at the time, I should have got a very small one). That top hat is on show at my parents' home. People always bring up the fact that my wife was an hour late, as she was waiting for her hairdresser to battle through traffic. Not one of the highlights for me. But it just goes to show how important your big day is, so you need to make sure everything is in place for matters to go smoothly. Here's hoping our weddings special will be the start of you making your own wonderful memories.

Q Do you remember the very first time you picked up a camera?
A I can remember the first time I picked up
a camera and was really interested in it. I was 12, and my Grandad showed me how to use it. He always had his camera with him, taking pictures of the family. I have so many amazing memories of him showing me his cameras and photo albums, it’s where I started to truly appreciate photography.
Q When would you say you properly started to catch the bug for photography?
A I properly caught the bug when I was at school, around 14-years-old. I started taking pictures of the local town and people and would get them printed and pick one to paint in watercolours. I can vividly remember painting a local market scene – lots of hustle and bustle happening. I was very arty at school. Over time, I realised I enjoyed the interaction of taking
pictures with people far more than sitting alone in a room painting all summer long. That was the turning point and I started exploring photography more seriously.
Q Was there a particular moment when you saw a career in it?
A When I was at college, I was really just enjoying the art environment – learning about art history and the practical techniques of photography. But it was during a few internships that I started to see a career in it. I loved being around professional photographers, seeing their work, and hanging out in their studios, taking it all in – it felt like home. A place of creativity I knew I wanted and needed to be in. It made me realise what I wanted to do in my career.
Q What was some of your earliest work and how do you look back on it?
A Some of my very early work was thanks to my sister, Rebecca May, who now runs the PR agency RM Publicity. Back then, she worked for a fashion PR company and I was interning for a big photographer. The brand my sister represented at the
time needed a photographer to shoot some lookbooks and she pitched me and the client said yes. I look back on those shoots with such fondness... they remind me of all the hard work and dedication I’ve put into my career. And I still love being a photographer now just as much as I did back then.
Q When would you say your career properly took o ?
A It’s hard to pinpoint because my career has had highs and lows, like a rollercoaster. But if I had to choose a moment, artistically, I’d say right after the pandemic. That period made many of us stop and rethink our lives. I had the chance to refresh, start test shooting again, and just fully go for it... the art of photography, I mean. Going back to seeing it as art made me hone the style you see today, my signature style that every creative has.
Q You have photographed some amazing people – have you ever been starstruck?
A When it becomes your job, and you do a lot of research on people before photographing them, it feels quite normal to meet famous people now. I often feel
like I’m a part of their journey in some way. I wouldn’t say ‘starstruck’, but I’ve definitely been very excited about meeting certain people – too many to list, but a few include Cate Blanchett, Stephen Graham, and Twiggy.
Q Who have been some of your favourite subjects and why?
A Most recently, the iconic Dame Twiggy Lawson. Twiggy is one of my favourite subjects because she is truly, authentically herself. I love her honest, down-to-earth qualities. She’s a true British icon.
Q Your shot of Twiggy has recently been accepted into the National Portrait Gallery. How does that feel?
A It’s quite overwhelming, to be honest, and there’s also a real sense of pride in my career to date. To be part of The National Portrait Gallery is definitely a major career highlight. It feels like a form of acceptance.
Q How do you like to work?
A Collaboration is at the heart of what I do – working with stylists, hair, makeup,

art directors, picture editors, my agent (the list goes on). It’s all a team e ort. It’s important to me that every single person involved – on set or o – feels valued. When your team feels good and respected, good, creative things happen.
Q Do you think you are renowned now for a certain style?
A Yes. I often get messages from people saying, “I knew this was your shoot before I even looked at the credits”, which is a massive compliment. It’s hard to define my style in one sentence, but I’d say it’s creating beauty portraits in the studio with a timeless quality. I’m interested in exploring sculptured light and abstract forms. I prefer to photograph people with empowered energy, and I always strive to make sure that shines through.
Q What is DEFINED Magazine and why did you launch that?
A DEFINED is a one-to-one collaboration between myself and the talent, creating cover shoots with a di erence. I ask each talent what they’d like to do first, and then I build a creative around that. It’s quite unique in that sense. It’s an amazing creative outlet for me, and it’s becoming the same for the talent featured in it. We have no constraints.
Q What do you have coming up with that?
A I really can’t say – so sorry – I have to keep every story exclusive until it’s released. But what I can say is that I am working with some really interesting talent who have big projects going on. Everything is timed to coincide with their projects for maximum publicity.
Q Is there someone you haven’t photographed who you’d love to have in front of you one day?
A I have a big list of people I’d love to photograph. A few are Pamela Anderson, Nicole Kidman, Naomi Campbell, and Cindy Crawford.
Q Whereabouts do you live in Buckinghamshire and what do you love about the area?
A I live near Princes Risborough in a beautiful village. I love all the nature spots, especially when walking my dog, Rodney. Right behind my house are fields with the most amazing view – you can literally see for miles. After living in London for 15-plus years, I can’t stop looking at it. I love the area because you get easy access to London and the major international airports for work, but at weekends or evenings you can
escape to the beautiful Bucks countryside. Some of my highlights include the local pubs, walks, and farm shops. It is also a great area to bring up kids – my daughter and niece absolutely love all of the play cafes, caves, and walking the dogs. We also love popping to Marlow for a spot of shopping!
Q Where are some of your favourite picture perfect spots?
A I love walking my dog at Bradenham as the views are incredible and there is a big field and track. We also like having a drink in the summer at The Lions of Bledlow pub when the sun is setting on a Saturday afternoon – it’s magical.

CHANGE the RECORD
In an industry that’s tough to break, the work ethic and belief of Etham is uplifting. Absolutely chats to the Reading-based singer ahead of a new EP release
Some voices don’t just sing, but they make you feel. Etham is one of those rare artists who can turn heartbreak into something beautiful, wrapping raw emotion in melodies that linger. His latest single, Still Can’t Move On, which came out back in February, is a testament to that gift. A deeply personal reflection on love and loss, the track is the next glimpse into his highly anticipated EP, Everything and Nothing, set for release later this summer.
“I’m really excited,” says the man himself about the new EP. “I’m really proud of these new songs and I feel for the first time that there’s a lot of consistency in the sound as well as conveying a real story that is hard to write about, but also a relief as I know it will hopefully connect with a lot of people.”
If Still Can’t Move On is anything to go by, a treat is in store. Etham’s golden-toned guitar lines set a warm, melancholic tone as he lays his heart bare, his voice rich with longing. There’s an aching honesty in the way he sings – his falsetto soaring like a quiet plea, delicate yet devastating.
This is one of his most powerful vocal performances to date, capturing the bittersweet sting of a love that still lingers – something Everything and Nothing will build upon.
“All the songs are about an experience I had with heartbreak and even though I would have loved to write about something else, it just felt really real and true to put those feelings into my music,” he explains.
“It’s just a journey of each stage of a heartbreak, the beginning, the middle and then the end, and I think each song describes each stage of that experience.”
Written over the course of a month during trips to Nashville and LA, Everything and Nothing explores the emotions that come with letting go. Still Can’t Move On follows the devastating Now That You’re Gone, a pianodriven heartbreaker that cuts to the core, and There For You, a song of regret sung in a grief-stricken half-whisper.
Many are likely already familiar with Etham’s music, thanks to breakout track 12:45, from his 2019 EP Stripped, which has racked up over 85 million Spotify streams. So early in his career, Etham demonstrated a maturity in both songwriting and composition beyond his years
PHOTOS: TOM OXLEY
– and a love for music really did start early for the Reading local. “From a really young age (about eight-years-old) all I could think about was music,” he smiles. “I was obsessed with guitars and drums, I loved how music sounded and made me feel and I was so deeply interested in how music was created.
“I was lucky enough to grow up on great music, such as people like Elton John, The Beatles and then as I got a little older I was really into bands like Red Hot Chilli Peppers, 30 Seconds To Mars and lots of other bands, but I think the one that really inspired me to make music when I was around 11/12-yearsold was the artist James Morrison. I think his image as a simple stripped back guitar vocalist with amazing heartfelt songs really grabbed my attention and he was the first
person to truly inspire me to write songs.” When did he start singing? “I think I was 10/11-years-old and at first I didn’t really think anything of it. I started playing guitar first and when I learnt my favourite songs I just started singing along and one day my dad said ‘Oh that sounds really good’ – and because of that it just started to give me confidence that I could possibly pursue this as a career.
“That made me feel incredibly excited and then there was no turning back, I knew from then that I just had to do this. When I was 14-years-old I was contacted by my first management who I ended up spending eight years with and I think when they became very serious that I had what it takes to be a singer, then I became very committed to making it work.”
“I'd rather enjoy every part of the journey instead of giving up”
There’s no doubt in this day and age of streaming and social media, it’s harder than ever to get noticed. “I feel really confident and I back my experience as a songwriter, but the music industry is harder than ever now and trying to get your songs heard is a di cult process,” Etham nods. “You have yourself and your team around you saying how great it is, but without listeners or fans or a viral video you do sometimes question your ability and what it takes to become a successful artist. But I’d rather enjoy every part of the journey instead of giving up no matter how successful or unsuccessful I become.
“It is tough, but at the same time nothing is easy,” he adds. “You do need to have thick skin to deal with rejections and failures, but there are also the things you learn from so over the years my attitude to those hard times have changed and you have to remind yourself that you are pursuing something you love doing. You just need to be grateful for every stage you’re at and believe that your hard work will pay o in some kind of way.”
His own music aside, Etham has built a reputation as a world-class songwriter, frequently travelling to South Korea to work with K-Pop stars, as well as working with US legends like Tori Amos, and acclaimed producers such as Red Triangle, Wayne Hector, Jake Gosling, Nick Atkinson, and Edd Holloway. With over 200 million Spotify streams, 1.5 million monthly listeners, and performances alongside John Newman, JP Cooper, Tori Kelly, and James Morrison, Etham has solidified himself as one of the most captivating voices in indie-pop. There’s no question, for us, that his hard work will indeed pay o very soon.

You can wander along empty stretches of beach, book a table at even the most in-demand restaurants with ease, or tee o at Quinta do Lago’s worldclass golf courses without a wait in sight.
Four Seasons Fairways makes the most of this season of calm. The resort’s unique blend of villa-style accommodation with the convenience and service of a boutique hotel o ers guests the best of both worlds. Each villa or apartment is impeccably designed, spacious and private, complete with either a private pool or Jacuzzi, outdoor dining area and fully equipped kitchen.
Despite the space and privacy, you’re never far from luxurious touches and thoughtful service. The resort’s wellness centre is a peaceful haven for rest and rejuvenation, with an indoor heated pool, sauna, steam room, and treatment rooms o ering everything from massages to facials. For those who like to stay active, the gym is well equipped and hosts regular classes.
Food is central to the Four Seasons Fairways experience, and the quieter seasons o er even more opportunity to indulge. At VIVO, guests can ease into the day with fresh juices, excellent co ee, and breakfast dishes that make the most of seasonal ingredients. Come evening, Amara o ers a more refined a air. With panoramic views and a menu that celebrates modern Portuguese cuisine, dining here feels elegant yet relaxed, especially when paired with a bottle of local wine and the glow
of a Quinta do Lago sunset. Beyond the resort, o -season dining takes on a wonderfully languid rhythm. Long, wine-soaked lunches at places like 2 Passos perched overlooking the ocean, are practically a requirement. The service is unhurried, the views uninterrupted, and the freshly caught seafood, grilled to perfection.
The o -season is also ideal for exploring. Golf, of course, remains a major draw with Quinta do Lago’s courses world-renowned, and the fairways are just that little bit greener when you’re not playing in 30-degree heat. The same is true for tennis, padel, or even a gentle cycle along the wooden boardwalks that hug the Ria Formosa. For walkers, the nearby trails winding through pine forests and along the coast are quiet and wild, alive with the colours of nature and the sounds of migrating birds. You might spot flamingos or simply enjoy the salty breeze as you stroll along the sand dunes. For those craving a little adventure or culture, there are treasures to be discovered nearby. The cobbled streets and whitewashed buildings of Faro’s old town are perfect for a slow afternoon of exploring, while a boat trip to Estaminé – a restaurant set on a secluded island in the Ria Formosa – is a must. With its barefoot charm and unbeatable views, it’s
the kind of place that makes you feel as though you’ve stumbled upon a well-kept secret.
And perhaps that’s the real beauty of the Secret Season. At Four Seasons Fairways, everything is designed to let you settle in, slow down, and savour it all. Whether you’re curled up on a terrace with a book, sitting down to a long dinner at Amara, or watching the sun dip beneath the Atlantic after a day spent out in nature, it’s the kind of experience that lingers long after you’ve left.
As the rest of the world rushes on, there’s something quietly wonderful about choosing to pause. And in Quinta do Lago, at Four Seasons Fairways, the Secret Season might just be the most beautiful time of all.

Wine recommendations for the month
By THE WINE SOCIETY
Glorioso Crianza, Rioja 2020 £11.50
Toasty vanilla meets vibrant black cherry fruit in this unmistakably classic Rioja. Smooth, silky, and packing a punch. 12 months ageing in French oak has enhanced this contemporary expression of Rioja, toasty, plump and fruity.
Teixeiró Vinho Verde 2023 £8.25
With its note of honeysuckle, peach and orange blossom and crisp, refreshing taste, this o ers a slightly more floral example of Vinho Verde. This is a blend of local grapes loureiro, alvarinho and avesso and is all about charm and drinkability.
Señorio de Sarr a Rosado, Navarra 2024 £8.95
A deeply coloured, fabulously fruity dry Spanish rosé made from local garnacha. Fresh red-berry fruit, a streak of citrussy grapefruit and a refreshing dry finish makes this a great wine for food that packs a punch but equally leaves you feeling refreshed.

A CULINARY JOURNEY
Exploring the history of San Carlo Restaurants
By MARK KEBBLE
San Carlo Restaurants has etched its name into the annals of the UK dining scene as a symbol of Italian culinary excellence. Established in 1992, the brand has enjoyed a trajectory marked by growth, innovation, and a steadfast commitment to authentic Italian cuisine. From its humble beginnings to becoming a beloved institution, the history of San Carlo Restaurants is a story of passion, perseverance, and a dedication to flavour.
THE BEGINNING: A VISION COMES TO LIFE
The journey of San Carlo begins with its founder, Carlo Distefano. Originally from Sicily, Distefano brought with him a deep appreciation for Italian culinary traditions. The first San Carlo restaurant opened in the heart of Birmingham, a city that was, and still is, a melting pot of cultures. It quickly became known for its vibrant atmosphere and authentic dishes, setting the standard for Italian dining in the UK. Distefano’s vision was clear: to provide diners with not just food, but an experience that celebrated the richness
of Italian culture. With a keen focus on fresh ingredients and traditional recipes, the first San Carlo restaurant laid the groundwork for a brand that would soon expand beyond Birmingham.
EXPANSION AND GROWTH
The success of the original San Carlo restaurant led to a remarkable expansion. In the late 1990s, the brand began to grow, with new locations opening not just in Birmingham, but in other major cities across the UK. By prioritising quality and consistency, each new establishment upheld the standards set by the original restaurant.
The San Carlo experience goes beyond just food; it encompasses ambiance and service. The restaurants are designed to reflect the warmth of Italian hospitality, creating a space where guests feel welcome and valued. This commitment to excellence resonated with diners, leading to a loyal customer base that continued to grow.
LANDMARK EVENTS AND RECOGNITION
As the San Carlo brand solidified its presence in the UK, it garnered numerous accolades that underscored its reputation as a leader in the industry. The restaurant group received various awards for its exceptional food quality and innovative dining experiences. This recognition helped to elevate the status of San Carlo Restaurants, making them a preferred choice for locals and tourists alike.
THE EVOLVING MENU: TRADITION MEETS INNOVATION
One of the hallmarks of San Carlo Restaurants is its ability to adapt while
staying true to its roots. The menu has evolved over the years to include a range of dishes that reflect both traditional Italian cuisine and modern culinary trends. Seasonal ingredients are a focal point, ensuring that the menu remains fresh and exciting. Signature dishes such as wood-fired pizzas, handmade pasta, and fine seafood o er guests an authentic taste of Italy.
A BRIGHT FUTURE
As of 2025, San Carlo Restaurants continue to thrive, with several locations operating across London, Manchester, and beyond. The brand’s commitment to authenticity and quality, combined with its innovative approach to Italian cuisine, has ensured its place in the competitive landscape of the UK dining scene. Looking forward, the future appears promising – with plans for continued expansion and a focus on sustainability and community engagement, the company is poised to remain a staple of Italian dining in the UK. The journey
that began in Birmingham in 1992 has transformed into a rich history of passion, flavour, and an unwavering commitment to providing an unparalleled dining experience. San Carlo Restaurants stand not just as eateries, but as ambassadors of Italian culinary culture, reminding us that food is much more than sustenance – it’s a celebration of life.

Tucked away in the South Downs near Pulborough, West Sussex, Stopham specialises in aromatic still wines, crafting some of the country’s finest Pinot Gris, Bacchus, and Pinot Blanc. And they’ve got the silverware to prove it, racking up awards from WineGB and the Independent English Wine Awards like it’s no big deal.
Founded in 2007 by Simon Woodhead, a former McLaren F1 engineer, Stopham takes the same precision and craft that goes into fine-tuning race cars and applies it to winemaking. But don’t mistake precision for over-engineering - they are all about guiding the grapes, not micromanaging them. From meticulously managed vineyards to minimal-intervention techniques in the winery, their approach lets the fruit do the talking, resulting in vibrant, aromatic wines with crisp acidity and layers of delicate complexity that rank among England’s finest still wines.
Sustainability is at the heart of the operation, too, and if you fancy a closer look, their vineyard tours and tastings o er the perfect excuse to sip awardwinning wine while soaking in the Sussex countryside.

Celebrants on finding your wedding venue
As a Humanist wedding celebrant, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing countless couples say their vows in various stunning venues. Each one is unique, and each couple has their own vision of what makes the perfect setting for their big day. Here’s a five-step guide to help you find the venue that fits your vision, budget, and needs.
DETERMINE YOUR GUESTLIST
Your guestlist is the key starting point when choosing a venue. It raises important questions that will guide you through the rest of your planning. I always advise my couples to think of it like this: imagine you’re planning a casual Friday night with a Chinese takeaway at home. If you wouldn’t invite someone to your house for a low-key evening, why would you invite them to your wedding? Keeping this in mind will help you curate the guestlist that feels right for your dream day.
SET YOUR BUDGET BEFORE VIEWING VENUES
Establishing a clear budget ahead of time is essential. Once you know how many guests you’re expecting, the numbers will start to make sense. Many venues cater to smaller, intimate weddings, so knowing your headcount helps narrow down your options.
IDENTIFY YOUR NONNEGOTIABLES
As a couple think about the elements that are crucial to you. Do you envision an outdoor ceremony with a rain option (since, let’s face it, this is the UK). Or perhaps you're dreaming of a venue with a historic feel and beautiful gardens? If accessibility is a priority, consider how easy it is for all your guests to reach the venue. Many couples prefer venues with in-house catering, while others may want the freedom to bring in caterers they’ve chosen or used before. Also, think about overnight accommodations for both you and your guests.
KEEP YOUR OPTIONS OPEN: DON’T RUSH
It’s natural for your preferences to evolve as you discuss your wedding plans. That’s perfectly fine! Avoid rushing into booking a venue to ‘tick it o the list’ and to secure a date. If you choose a venue before fully understanding what it o ers, you may find yourself regretting the decision later.
ASK PLENTY OF QUESTIONS DURING YOUR VIEWING
When you visit a venue, make sure to ask the right questions. Does the venue have a dedicated coordinator who is easily reachable? Be sure to ask about hidden costs, read the terms and conditions thoroughly (and consider having someone else review them too). Transparency is key, and if a venue is vague about pricing, that’s a red flag. Also, ask about what’s included in their packages – do they provide chairs, linens, crockery, or glassware? And when it comes to suppliers, check if the venue has a preferred list or if they allow you to bring in your own. This will help you maintain control over your wedding’s style and the vendors you choose.

NORTH YORKSHIRE WEDDING
WATERSIDE INN, BRAY
The cognoscenti of The Waterside Inn (of Roux brothers fame) will make this venue work, however awkward, on account of its legendary food. The last wedding we organised was a real challenge; extending the terrace area is the only real option for outdoor space. This needs to be built on high sca olding and is very exposed on the Thames side – and on this occasion, in a howling gale.
The marquee needs to be built in two days (Monday and Tuesday) when there are no residents staying. This marquee was lined in ivory and had French windows on three sides for views of the Thames, which we had floodlit. Paul Hawkins, one of our favourite florists, decorated the interior with glorious summer flowers, greenery and twinkling lights. Thankfully the wind dropped.
The guests began the reception with champagne, cocktails and canapés in the marquee before moving through to
the main restaurant for an exceptional dinner and entertainment by the Gypsy Queens roving band, from Monaco, and the one and only Michael Macintyre. Our team quickly transformed the marquee into a nightclub – complete with an illuminated dance floor, giant mirror ball, banquette seating, stage and lighting.
NORTH YORKSHIRE: COUNTRY
WEDDING AT A PRIVATE HOUSE
This was a very traditional, country wedding, with a few amusing twists that made the celebration really individual. We built a traditional ‘sperry’ tent, crafted from genuine sailcloth, which breathes by day and glows at night. An Irish Ceilidh band set the scene as guests arrived for champagne and canapés.
Our team had built a bridge over a ‘haha’ to a large framed marquee for dinner, with an ivory lining and French windows looking out to the breathtaking garden. At the end of dinner, the ‘wall’ at one end of the marquee dropped to reveal the stage set for dancing under a night-sky ceiling, with state of the art lighting and an impressive mirror ball. The sensational ALR Collective band (including saxophone and electric violin players who mingle with the crowd) kicked o with the ‘newly weds’ first dance.
BERKSHIRE: SUMMER WEDDING AT A PRIVATE HOUSE
Weddings ‘from home’, as opposed to a dedicated wedding venue, are always a challenge. Access and power can be di cult – a client’s wish-list can be harder still! To create a dream venue, for instance, in a tent over a walled garden, incorporating its herbaceous borders is di cult; to magically return it to its original state the following week, is the triumph of hope over experience!
Our subcontractors are ever mindful of this. Thankfully, we own all our own trackway which provides ground protection for vehicles to the venue. On this occasion, we needed it!
In pouring rain, our team had built a fabulous rustic poled marquee with a ‘Mediterranean look’; illuminated stars hung from the roof, and colourful and ambient uplighting drenched the walls. There were round tables for dinner, with lemon tree centre-pieces, bright coloured pottery and linen, and miniature bottles of limoncello for guests, with their names on, as wedding favours.
The guests danced late to Will Blake and our discotheque. Miraculously the garden recovered quickly – you would never have known it had happened!
BERKSHIRE, LAKESIDE WEDDING
I was asked to pull this together with only three weeks notice – the main challenge! This couple were married in a local church on the Friday, followed by an intimate lunch with close family. This was phase one. The following day they had a much larger party at lunchtime to celebrate with their numerous family and friends. This was in an extremely large frame tent, with a hand-made lining, tacked to the interior. We hung eight huge chandeliers, entwined with cascading wisteria. The tables were burgeoning with colourful garden flowers, candlesticks and nightlights.
The couple chose to have a huge Argentinian-style asado/barbeque outside. We provided a range of music; a jazz trio followed by a full London gospel choir, a full band and superstar DJ, David Morales. We projected light shows and patterns to the front facade of the house to bring it to life.

How a prenup can strengthen your relationship
Nuptial agreements have gained popularity since a landmark Supreme Court case in 2010, giving them greater weight in English courts. They o er a practical, transparent way to address finances before and during marriage, and outline what should happen if the relationship ends. For those considering a nuptial agreement, B P Collins’ family team is here to guide you through the process, debunk common misconceptions, and highlight why prenups can be valuable for peace of mind.
WHEN TO CONSIDER
A NUPTIAL AGREEMENT
It’s best to start the process as soon as you’ve decided to marry. Waiting until close to the wedding can add unnecessary pressure, and legally,
agreements should be finalised at least one month before your big day.
If you’re already married, you might decide a nuptial agreement is appropriate when receiving significant inheritance or gifted assets, or to protect a business, especially if third parties are involved.
A nuptial agreement should be mutually agreed upon, not imposed by one partner. It aims to prevent costly, emotionally draining legal battles and provide reassurance to third parties, such as family members and business partners.
COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS
Despite their growing popularity, there are still many misconceptions about nuptial agreements that are easily debunked.
Myth 1:They’re not recognised in this country
In 2010, the Supreme Court ruled that nuptial agreements – so long as
certain criteria are fulfilled – should be upheld by the courts. A well-drafted agreement can protect wealth, including family estates and business assets.
Myth 2: They’re only for the rich and famous Nuptial agreements are common among a wide range of people, not just the wealthy. The agreement must be fair to both parties – if it leaves one partner unable to meet their basic needs, then it may be only partially upheld (if at all).
Myth 3: They can’t be changed Nuptial agreements can be revised with both partners' consent. A good agreement includes a review clause to ensure fairness when significant life events occur, such as the birth of a child or unforeseen long-term unemployment. Myth 4: They show a lack of trust
A nuptial agreement can strengthen trust by encouraging an open discussion about financial expectations and future plans. It’s no di erent than creating a will or insurance policy – it protects both partners' interests and helps avoid future conflict.
Myth 5: They can only be signed before marriage
A prenup is signed before the wedding and to ensure there is no inference of duress, it should be signed at least one month beforehand. You can also sign a post-nuptial agreement after the wedding at any time, with the same legal e ect.
NUPTIAL AGREEMENTS CAN HELP RESOLVE MATTERS AMICABLY
While a nuptial agreement doesn’t guarantee an outcome, it provides clarity on marital and non-marital assets and helps to define both partners' needs in the event of a divorce. This can help to avoid costly litigation and fosters a sense of security and understanding between you and your partner. Having these discussions early on can make it easier to resolve any issues amicably.
For further advice and information on nuptial agreements, please contact B P Collins’ family team at enquiries@bpcollins.co.uk or call 01753 889995. See more at bpcollins.co.uk

In a high street world crowded with cookie-cutter opticians and logo-heavy frames, Eye Club is leading a quiet eyewear revolution from the heart of Berkshire. With practices in Pangbourne and Caversham, this independent British brand is reimagining what an optician can be – fusing artisan craftsmanship with design-forward sensibility and a deep respect for visual culture.
Founded by brothers Simon and Rufus Abbott, Eye Club reflects their shared background in fashion and retail. “We wanted to create a refreshed, stylish and more informal setting for our version of an optician,” says Rufus. “We cater to people who love spectacles – who see them as part of their identity.” And it shows. Step inside an Eye Club practice and you’ll find something closer to a design gallery than a medical o ce. Beyond the clinical expertise – o ered by experienced optometrists using the

latest technology – are shelves lined with timeless, thoughtfully designed frames, from the brand’s own range to globally respected independents like Dita, L.G.R, Lunetterie Générale, Orgreen, Thierry Lasry, Harry Lary’s, and The Other Glasses. At Eye Club, style is substance. Their philosophy rejects flashy logos and inflated prices, choosing instead to highlight integrity, quality, and originality. Many of their collections are produced in small batches by skilled artisans, with an emphasis on craftsmanship over mass production. Simon explains: “Our objective is to avoid the false economy of designer eyewear. Independent doesn’t mean una ordable – it means better made, more interesting, and more authentic.”
This balance between clinical care and cultural insight is rare, and it’s winning fans. Eye Club’s customer is style-savvy, culturally curious, and sees glasses as an
extension of personal taste. The brothers call their ethos “Independent Vision” – a celebration of individuality and the art of seeing, influenced by everything from architecture to fashion and photography.
Even their branding feels more like a boutique magazine than a medical service – tactile, stylish, and deliberate in every detail. That passion has struck a chord, with word-of-mouth driving steady growth and plans for expansion now underway across Berkshire and beyond. In an industry too often defined by sameness, Eye Club stands out with a simple, powerful message: eyewear should be personal, considered, and expressive. In their hands, a pair of glasses becomes not just a tool – but a creative statement. After all, as they put it, Independent Vision isn’t just a tagline: it’s a way of seeing the world.

Best of friends
A new chapter and new friendships at The Fremantle Trust care homes
Friendship is a special bond built on trust, support, and shared experiences. It brings joy, comfort, and a sense of belonging.
We’re excited to share the heartwarming story of Margaret and Rita, residents at The Fremantle Trust care home in Holmer Green. Their story shows how special it is to have a best friend just down the hall, someone to share the everyday moments with. Margaret and Rita met at a weekly knitting club. They started as strangers, but quickly bonded over a shared love for knitting. That common interest laid the foundation for what has become a close and lasting friendship. Margaret recalls: “Friendships are important, especially when you come into a care home. It’s not where you’d imagine you’d be, but having a great friendship with Rita makes all the di erence.”
Rita agrees: “It’s nice to have someone to talk to and reminisce with. It’s good to know I have a friend here, it’s very important to me.”
Their friendship goes far beyond the knitting club. Together, they’ve taken on new projects, like crafting a beautiful patchwork quilt that now hangs proudly in their home. More than just a piece of art, the quilt symbolises their bond and the possibilities for connection at any stage of life.
But it’s not just about the creative work. Margaret and Rita support each other through everyday challenges, celebrate each other’s victories, and o er comfort during tough times. Their companionship has helped turn Cherry Garth care home into a true home where they feel connected and valued.
Margaret shares: “Coming into a care home was a big change. But finding a friend like Rita changed everything. She gave me a sense of belonging and reminds me that life is still full of wonderful moments.”
Rita adds: “Having Margaret as a friend has been a blessing. We share so many laughs and memories, and it’s comforting to know we’re in this together. Our friendship has made this chapter of my life incredibly special.”
Their story is a reminder that life in a care home can be the start of a new chapter, one filled with possibilities and connection.

Marlow’s Anya Lautenbach on becoming a gardening influencer and a date with the Royal Windsor Flower Show
“I turned all my sadness, loss and grief into lavender hedges, herbaceous borders and wildflower meadows”
The prestigious Royal Windsor Flower Show returns to The York Club, Windsor Great Park, on Saturday 7th June for its 118th year, to celebrate the natural world through innovative garden design and artisan craftsmanship. This fabulous one-day event that celebrates gardening, nature, cookery, traditional crafts and old-fashioned fun, brings together not only the UK’s most revered horticultural experts, stunning gardens and displays, but also communities and garden enthusiasts of all ages and abilities and will feature a wide range of food, drink, entertainment and activities for all the family.
Recently, the show announced the newest member to the ambassadorial team, Anya Lautenbach, aka @ anya_thegarden_fairy: gardener, author, and Sunday Times Bestseller.
Anya is a self-taught gardener with a passion for the environment and championing neurodiversity. She grew up in Poland, and now lives in Marlow, where her garden has blossomed through years of propagation and clever gardening tricks. Absolutely headed outdoors to meet Anya and find out more about her passion and the sad story that inspired a love for gardening.
Q When did you move to England?
A In 2007 I initially moved to the Scottish Highlands where I spent some time absorbing all the beauty and trying to learn English (not the easiest place for a foreign person to learn English I must say, but I loved Scotland!). A year later I moved to Buckinghamshire where I met my husband and settled down.
Q What do you love about where you live?
A I love nature and in my opinion we live in the most beautiful part of the world. In our garden we have one of the rarest British
butterflies, Purple Emperor, and so much other precious wildlife. Bringing up children in this area is a true privilege and something I feel so grateful for. My job as a writer often takes me to London and other places. One day I’m gardening, I’m looking after our bees, chickens, watching butterflies feeding on my flowers, and the next moment I can be in London, which is only half an hour away from us. Marlow itself is a wonderful place with lots of lovely shops, great restaurants and fabulous gardens to visit. I also love the sense of community. Everyone is very supportive and that’s what makes life here so lovely.
Q Tell us about the time when your garden first provided you with a sanctuary to escape from what was going on elsewhere in your life?
A The story of my garden did not start as a happy story. It was a phone call on one lovely summer day back in 2011. I was a young mum looking after my baby waiting for a very happy message from home (Poland). That phone call was going to bring the happiest news about my sister’s baby. My sister and I were both expecting our babies at the same time and my son was only a few weeks old when that message came, but instead of being the most positive message, it started the most devastating period for our whole family. My sister’s son was born with a rare, terminal genetic condition and this changed our lives forever. After receiving that devastating phone call, I put my son in a little swing, I took a spade, and I started digging in the garden. I cried and cried and one day in May 2019 I stopped, and I realised that I had turned all my sadness, loss and grief into lavender hedges, herbaceous borders and wildflower meadows. Within seven years my sister lost two sons and this left us all totally heartbroken. In that time I have propagated thousands
CHELSEA PENSIONERS AT THE SHOW
of plants, desperately trying to stay sane and strong for my own family. I turned every bad news from home into another cutting, another flower bed. I turned loss and grief into a garden. This garden grew on my tears, but so much positivity came out of it. My sister is one of my followers and has also created a garden and now I share my knowledge with everyone else.
Q Why did you decide to start sharing your gardening journey online?
A I realised how much positivity I have received from nature over the years. I feel an enormous sense of gratitude for everything I got. The fact I overcame all of life’s challenges and found my happy place in my garden where I feel at peace and at home is something I never take for granted. I wanted to give something back and to share this story to help others. You just never know what’s around the corner and I know that nature, propagation and gardening can heal broken hearts.
During that di cult time back in 2011 when I was propagating plants, I felt in control while the rest of my life felt like collapsing, I felt like creating a new life, witnessing progress and that’s what kept me going. By sharing my skills and my knowledge through my tutorials on social media, and now also through my books, my life became more purposeful and in some ways it still helps me process my own grief.
Grief is like an ocean coming in waves. The waves just never completely go away. Some waves are gentle in the background and sometimes they become very strong and powerful, taking over your mind. By giving back, by sharing my skills and my knowledge with others I turn my big waves of grief into something purposeful. Sharing myself with others and positively contributing to our society is truly uplifting.
Q Why is gardening good for our mental health?
A Gardening can improve both mental and physical health. I feel it every day. When
I’m sad or when I start overthinking, I just go outside for 10-20 minutes. Even looking at plants improves my mood. Years ago, I was diagnosed with ADHD and my brain hardly ever stops. The only place I feel really at peace is the garden. When I’m gardening, I don’t think about the past or the future, I’m living in the present and that feels so good. Our gardens can be a great place to process grief and life’s challenges. Being outside provides vitamin D and spending time in our gardens or just outdoors can lessen symptoms of stress, depression and anxiety. When I’m gardening all the worries get zoned out and suddenly, they seem to be in the distance and not that important. All the worries get replaced with some positive thoughts. This allows me to shift my focus and replace negative thoughts with something more positive and uplifting.
Q Why were you keen to be an ambassador of the Royal Windsor Flower Show?
A Life as a content creator and writer is busy and because I mainly work from home,
“Horticulture connects people and creates harmony, no matter who you are”
sometimes I feel isolated. I was delighted when I found out about the Royal Windsor Rose and Horticultural Society, because not only is it a fantastic opportunity to meet like-minded people, but all of this is on my doorstep. When I went to the first meeting, everyone was so welcoming and warm, I was thrilled when I got invited to become an ambassador. I also think that in our current world of divisions my collaboration with the Royal Windsor Rose and Horticultural Society is a lovely example of inclusivity. I’m from a di erent background, but horticulture allowed me to find common ground with a lovely group of people and I got included in one of the oldest flower shows in this country. This just gets to show you how horticulture connects people and creates harmony. It doesn’t matter who you are, anyone can give it a go and get involved.
I also hope that my collaboration with the Royal Windsor Flower Show will be a win-win for everyone. I love flower shows, and I can see how beneficial they are for our society. I’m so pleased I can promote the Royal Windsor Flower Show and their incredible charitable work across my social media channels to over 1.5 million followers and encourage people to get involved in flower shows.

PRIME PROPERTY
The former Buckinghamshire home of Winston Churchill’s speech specialist has come on to the market
Rignalls was designed by the well-known Arts and Crafts architect, Charles Holden, in 1909 for Sir Felix Semon. Sir Felix was a prominent doctor and attended to Edward VII and Winston Churchill. Gertrude Jekyll was employed to design the gardens and grounds, much of which are still in existence today. During the Second World War the house was owned by a member of the free French government. Amongst many, Charles de Gaulle is reputed to have visited on numerous occasions.
Today, Rignalls is a beautiful Grade II Listed property, constructed of brick, part
clay tile hung and rendered under a clay tile roof. The property has been refurbished to a high standard and restored to its original state by architect K Lankarani, specialist in bespoke conservation works, and Patrick Baty, a specialist in historical decorating. The house is typical of the Arts and Crafts movement with steep pitched roofs and striking chimneys.
Internally the house combines light and spacious reception rooms on the ground floor, with comfortable bedroom accommodation over the first and second floors. Of particular note is the double height reception hall with double doors opening onto the beautifully
proportioned drawing room. The principal reception rooms all face south, overlooking the terraced gardens.
On the first floor is a magnificent master bedroom suite with outstanding views over the valley together with three further principal bedrooms. The second floor o ers great flexibility and has further bedrooms or could be used as a self-contained flat. In recent years, the house has been fully restored to a high standard, Rignalls is now a wonderful comfortable family home with excellent modern infrastructure. Unfortunately most of Gertrude Jekyll’s gardens haven’t been maintained over the years, however a small number
“It is a rare example that reflects Holden's early Arts and Crafts experience”
have been restored, including her own garden at Munstead Wood. The gardens at Rignalls have since been restored with garden architect and historian Todd Longsta -Gowan.
The gardens and grounds lie predominantly to the south of the house. A York stone terrace flanks the south elevation with brick steps leading down to the terraced lawn and steps to the side lead down to a further lawned area below, both terraces are surrounded by well stocked shrubberies and laurel hedges. To the north is a wide belt of mature woodland and a lawned area with a carpet of da odils in the spring months and bluebells. The productive orchard and Victorian greenhouse adjoins the well-fenced paddock. There is a separate timber garage building which has recently been built.
Rignalls is situated in an elevated position with a mature wooded backdrop overlooking the popular Hampden Valley. The property is surrounded by wellmaintained agricultural land and the traditional Beech woodland of the Chiltern Hills. Local facilities are available in nearby Great Missenden, just over one mile away, whilst more comprehensive amenities are available in Amersham about eight miles away. Nearby High Wycombe has more extensive shopping and services including shopping centres, sports clubs and a
large John Lewis store and Waitrose. Buckinghamshire is renowned for its choice and standard of schooling, and is one of the last counties to maintain the traditional grammar school system including Dr Challoner’s Grammar School for boys and High School for girls in Amersham. Independent schools in the area include Wycombe Abbey (8.8 miles), Caldicott (15 miles), The Beacon (6 miles), Godstowe (7.2 miles), High March (11 miles) and Davenies (10 miles) to name a few.
Property agent Hugh Maconochie, director in the country department at Savills, says: “Rignalls is a rare example of a country house that reflects Holden’s early Arts and Crafts experience, with steep pitched roofs and striking chimneys that are typical of the style. It is a wonderfully comfortable
family home, with light and spacious reception rooms that have recently been restored and refurbished to a very high standard. Of particular note is a double height reception hall with double doors opening onto a beautifully proportioned drawing room.”
Alex Newall, managing director at Hanover Private, adds: “The gardens have Jekyll’s signature, with features typical of her style. Enjoying an elevated position with a mature wooded backdrop, the outside space has the most wonderful views of the Hampden Valley, while the lawned areas have a carpet of da odils and bluebells in the spring months.”
Rignalls is listed for sale with the Country House Department at Savills and Hanover Private for a guide price of £4,500,000. Find out more at savills.co.uk

REAL CAKE?
Piping porcelain with ceramic artist Ebony Russell
There are lots of ways of working with porcelain, but piping is one of the more unusual ones. Award-winning Australian ceramic artist Ebony Russell is known for her unconventional approach, which involves methodically piping porcelain in intricate layers to construct elaborate, freestanding forms.
Ebony’s first ever showcase in the UK is an in-store exhibition at wonderful conceptual London boutique Koibird. This unusual collection of ceramic pieces introduces an exciting fusion of art and retail. Known for her gravity-defying sculptural works, Ebony has created a limited-edition collection of 17 unique pieces, exclusive to the store.
Her work redefines traditional craftsmanship by erasing the boundaries between structure and decoration, celebrating excess, femininity, and the politics of purity with uninhibited delight. Through her practice, Ebony challenges longstanding perceptions of gendered aesthetics, showcasing the beauty and complexity of historically feminine-coded artistic techniques. Belma Gaudio, founder of Koibird, is a fan of Ebony’s creations. She says:
“Ebony’s work is so unique and exciting, and celebrates excess, delight and femininity in a way that fully speaks to the Koibird ethos. Prepare to be absolutely delighted with this feast for the eyes and the home!”
“TRANSFORMING
WEDDING CAKE AESTHETICS INTO CERAMIC ART”
Ebony’s collection unfolds across three primary narratives, each exploring excess, craftsmanship, and transformation through her signature piped porcelain technique. Suspiciously Beautiful merges fantasy and fragility, with porcelain piped into intricate, confectionery-like forms. Standout pieces include Fangs Out, with sharp, fang-like protrusions, and Lime Lattice, a vibrant play of color and craft.
aesthetics into ceramic art. The extravagant Poke Pot embodies the indulgence of Rococo design. The Siren Collection draws from mythology, evoking oceanic movement and allure.
The Six-Spouted Candle Holder, inspired by ancient artefacts, turns a functional object into sculptural treasure.
Two additional works expand the collection’s scope. Glaucous Urn, inspired by Greek mythology, features a perforated porcelain surface symbolizing magic
and transformation. Piped Columns reimagine classical architecture, balancing fragility and strength.
“Collaborating with Koibird has been an exhilarating experience.
Belma Gaudio’s fearless approach to showcasing the unexpected has created a platform where creativity thrives,” says Ebony.

Marina Hughes on her approach to interior design, stand out projects and always being the face of the business
arina Hughes has established herself as a leading interior designer for discerning clients in the home counties and beyond. We caught up with her to discover more about the person behind the brand.
“We aim to create a welcoming for the senses”
Q From an early age, were you interested in the creative side of life?
A As a child I was obsessed with all things creative whether it was dancing, ice skating, painting, drawing, making models or making dresses for my dolls. In my early teens, I decided to go to art college and it was there that I acquired a real passion for design. I finished with the equivalent of a distinction and that was a real achievement for me. I wanted to pursue a career as an artist, but life was challenging in the 90s and my parents couldn’t a ord to support me in further education. However, my passion for art and design never diminished and that is what drove me into interior design.
Q How do you want to be di erent?
A I don’t want to be seen as just another designer or a ‘copycat’ of someone else’s style. I’m building a brand based on original ideas and a distinctive approach, and I want to be recognised not just for my aesthetic, but for the way I connect with people as both a designer and an individual. What truly matters to me is making a di erence in people’s lives by helping them feel happy and comfortable in their homes. We’re not just decorating – we’re creating meaningful spaces where families
can build memories, unwind, and enjoy a sense of luxury. Each home should reflect the personality of the people living in it. I pride myself on being flexible and empathetic, always taking time to listen to clients and o er advice that truly benefits them. I believe interior design should appeal to all the senses. Think about walking into a luxury hotel lobby – that

welcoming scent, the elegance, the feeling of calm. That’s the kind of multi-sensory experience I aim to create in every home. The way a space feels is influenced by more than just how it looks. The sounds, the textures, the scents – all of it matters. That’s why I carefully consider every element – from the tactile feel of fabrics to the quality of finishes. I’m also passionate about using highquality, non-toxic materials. Poorly made furniture or cheap finishes can smell unpleasant, wear down quickly, or simply feel uncomfortable. That’s where craftsmanship and quality come in – every detail counts.
Q What di erent services do you o er?
A We o er a range of services tailored to di erent needs. At the simplest level, we provide FF&E (Furniture, Fixtures & Equipment). This service is perfect for clients who’ve bought a newly built home and are happy with the layout and basic finishes, but need help selecting furniture, lighting, window treatments, and accessories to bring it to life.
Sometimes we might suggest repainting a few walls – but there’s no major construction or refurbishment involved. It’s essentially about dressing the space. Our more comprehensive service includes full interior architectural specification and FF&E, often as part of a full refurbishment. This is our core o ering and where we really shine. We handle space planning, design direction, mood creation, and detailed furniture layouts. From there, we design lighting schemes tailored to how the space is used, select finishes for walls and floors, and coordinate everything so it all works together seamlessly.
We also manage procurement –sourcing and purchasing all items, overseeing quality control, and coordinating delivery and installation to ensure everything is perfect.
Q Can you pick out 2 projects that really showcase what you o er?
A 1. Project in Berkshire. The client had just bought a newly built, four-bedroom home with a great layout and a beautiful neutral palette. Our task was to design the optimal furniture layouts and present FF&E options that would complement and enhance the existing structure. It was about creating warmth and personality through thoughtful choices in furniture, lighting, and finishes.
2. Hertfordshire project. This was a full-scale refurbishment and extension, including a new basement with a swimming pool, entertainment area, bar, and gym. We collaborated closely with the architect to refine the layout, designed all the lighting, specified every finish, and provided a complete FF&E package. We handled everything down to the final accessories and even flower arrangements. It was a truly immersive, start-to-finish transformation.
Q What are your ambitions for the future?
A My dream is simple: to continue creating beautiful, unique designs for as long as I can. One day, I’d love to own a Georgian house with tall ceilings – my own personal design canvas. In terms of the business, I see great potential for growth, but I’m not looking to scale in a way that loses the personal touch. I want to stay handson, involved in every drawing, every decision. I want clients to know that when they choose Marina Hughes Interiors, they are getting me.

Green is a versatile and refreshing colour that has long been a symbol of nature, tranquillity, and rejuvenation. It’s no wonder that this calming hue is becoming a popular choice for bathroom interiors. Green can be the perfect shade to enhance your bathroom’s style, atmosphere, and overall aesthetic. Here, Leanne Robey, Senior Designer from Ripples Newbury, explains why green works so well in bathrooms, and how to bring out the best of this colour in your space.
RELAXATION AND CALMNESS
Bathrooms are spaces where we seek relaxation and rejuvenation, making it essential to choose colours that promote a sense of calm. Green, being closely associated with nature, is known for its soothing qualities. It evokes the peace and serenity of outdoor spaces, making it an ideal choice for creating a tranquil bathroom
GREEN
Bathroom design specialist Ripples on the hue to boost style, mood, and serenity
environment. Lighter greens, such as mint or sage, have a soft, gentle feel that can instantly lower stress and help create a calming oasis. Darker greens, like forest or olive, can add sophistication and richness, giving the room a cosy, inviting ambiance.
VERSATILITY IN DESIGN
Green is an incredibly versatile colour that pairs well with a wide range of materials and bathroom styles. Whether your bathroom has a modern, minimalist design, or a more traditional, vintage aesthetic, green can be easily incorporated. In contemporary bathrooms, bold green tiles or accent walls create a striking visual impact. For more classic designs, green can be introduced through accessories such as towels, plants, or even a vibrant green vanity. Green also works well with neutral tones like whites, greys, and beiges, balancing the space and preventing it from feeling too monochrome. For a more natureinspired look, consider pairing green
with wood elements, such as wooden shelving or bamboo accessories, to further evoke a sense of natural tranquillity.
COMPLEMENTING NATURAL LIGHT
Bathrooms often benefit from natural light, and green thrives in these environments. A well-lit bathroom with green accents or walls can feel even more open and airy. The colour reflects light in a soft, pleasing way, making the space feel fresher and more expansive. For bathrooms with limited natural light, softer, pastel greens can brighten the room without overwhelming the senses. Green is a fantastic choice for bathrooms, o ering a balance of style, mood enhancement, and versatility. Whether used in bold statements or subtle accents, this colour can transform your bathroom into a peaceful retreat.

Culture FIRST
Exploring the heart of an Akeley Wood education
We chose AW because of the strong focus on its culture. Get the basics right and the rest will follow in abundance!”
This comment, shared by a parent on social media, encapsulates what many Akeley Wood families value most – the school’s unwavering focus on the culture it cultivates. At Akeley Wood School, academic success is not seen in isolation. It is the natural result of a thriving, positive environment where students are known, respected and supported to achieve their best.
Culture is not something that is simply written on a wall – it is felt in every corridor, every classroom and every conversation. From the moment a child steps through the doors of Akeley Wood, they are welcomed into a community where kindness, respect, charity and a sense of belonging are not just encouraged – they are expected.
Under the leadership of Headteacher Vanessa Conlan, Akeley Wood has continued to refine this culture with intent and purpose. Rooted in the school’s
values and learner habits – Aspiration, Resilience, Responsibility, Integrity and Courage – students are given the tools to not only succeed academically, but to become well-rounded individuals who can navigate the complexities of the modern world with confidence. Across every stage of the school, this culture is lived and breathed. In the Junior School, it’s the nurturing relationships between teachers and students, the joy of learning through exploration and the carefully guided development of independence. At the Senior School, it’s the dynamic energy in the classroom, the robust character education programme and
“Akeley Wood believes in preparing students for life”
the space students are given to lead, reflect and grow. And in AW6, the school’s Sixth Form, it’s the confidence students build as they pursue their A-levels with clarity and purpose, preparing for their next chapter.
That culture is evident in the small things – how students greet their teachers in the morning, how peers cheer each other on during House events, how student voice is not only heard but acted upon. It is also reflected in the big things – the breadth of opportunity in the enriched curriculum, the strong pastoral care that supports every learner and the ambitious academic standards that guide student progress.
Akeley Wood doesn’t believe in simply preparing students for exams – it prepares them for life. And it starts with getting the culture right. Because when students feel safe, valued and inspired, the rest truly does follow in abundance.

DRONE LEGENDS
How
Upton House School are creating a host of opportunities for their pupils when it comes to technology
By RHIAN THORNTON
In February this year, Upton House School was inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) as part of their routine schedule of visits. We were delighted with their report and thrilled with the additional recognition of the children’s amazing digital skills.
As part of our approach to preparing children for their digital future we teach and develop a wide range of technological skills. We are excited to announce that we are now adding further to this tech savvy approach by introducing Drone Legends.
Drones o er great excitement for the children, learning opportunities across the curriculum and problem solving challenges. We have an exciting curriculum that develops a breadth of skills and educational experiences using drones. This comprehensive curriculum will support future UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) operators, drone engineers, software engineers and also complement many other areas of interest, from environmental monitoring to agricultural, aviation and many more. This cross-curricular subject has many STEM elements to it, as well as coding, applied maths concepts, digital skills, and critical problem-solving. The missions include Helper Bees, Life on Mars, Koala Care, Fighting Fires, Medicine Delivery and Cinematography.
Many of the missions involve the children programming the drones to follow a route, once they have calculated it. The children will work in small groups, role swapping from Drone Pilot, Observer and Safety O cer. The drone flying is indoors in a 2m x 2m space.
We are excited to be the first school in the UK to introduce Drone Legends and their successful curriculum. This curriculum brings real-world applications and can introduce and prepare children for new types of employment in the future. In this rapidly changing and evolving career market, the children’s natural curiosity and passions are sparked whilst learning more through the drone legends programme. Whether continuing space discovery, addressing worrying climate threats, or learning how drones can carry out tasks too unreachable by humans, the latest technological capabilities and the children’s enthusiasm go hand in hand. Who does not want to find out how the drones save koalas in bush fires or explore how the drone can go to places too dangerous for humans?
Schools have a responsibility to prepare children for the digital future. Drones are innovative, new and exciting. They o er a hands-on practical approach to teaching and learning STEM and o er the children a bird’s eye view. Most importantly they can be great fun and add a little magic to
the curriculum. Learning should be fun, and it most certainly should be magical and memorable. Our Drone Legends programme at Upton House allows new adventures in learning for every child. I would be very proud if, sitting in an aeroplane o to future holiday destinations, the Captain was an ex-Uptonian inspired by Drone Legends!

FAIRYTALE beginnings
St George’s School Windsor Castle o ers the perfect start to a child’s educational journey
Aplace where families “may find their child’s happy ever after” is how St George’s School Windsor Castle was described by The Good Schools Guide. Nowhere more so than in the school’s Kindergarten, which o ers an idyllic introduction to school life for children from the September after they turn three.
In a fairytale setting nestled at the foot of Windsor Castle, the school’s Kindergarten, which was completely transformed in September 2024, is a large, light and airy space with direct access to a purpose built garden complete with climbing frame, mud kitchen, home corner, vegetable patch and more.
Inside, calming neutral colours and natural materials combine to create a welcoming learning environment,
with a cosy reading corner, role play and construction zones, free-standing easels to nurture budding artists and multiple activity stations which change daily to maximise the breadth of opportunity available for freeflow exploration and discovery.
Aligned to the central principles of the school’s International Baccalaureate curriculum, the design encourages children to nurture their own curiosity and develop agency over their learning. By bringing elements of the outdoors in, including a large indoor sandpit, the space also caters for a range of individual learning styles and interests.
“We took the opportunity to completely go back to the drawing board,” says Emma Adriano, Head of Pre-Prep at St George’s. “The new environment the children have been enjoying this year
reflects the significant value we place on their natural desire to learn about the world around them. Every element is designed to maximise wellbeing and personal development, with multi-sensory experiences both indoors and outdoors making learning fun and exciting.”
In addition to their bespoke new space, Kindergarten children at St George’s continue to benefit from access to the school’s wider facilities. This includes highly-qualified specialist teaching in French, music, digital learning, PE and swimming in the school’s indoor pool, as well as nature walks in the private grounds of Windsor Castle. The children also enjoy a visiting farm, which this year even included a tortoise that was eagerly followed around the school grounds.
Open term time from 8.30am-3pm, with late pick-up available until 5.30pm, the holidays are easy to bridge for busy working parents thanks to the holiday club run on-site by Camp Beaumont. The school also accepts 15 hours free government funding. To find out more, reserve a place at the school’s upcoming Open Morning on Friday 16th May.

FLEXIBLE FRIEND
The headteacher of Heatherton on how they add value on top of the national curriculum
By NICOLA NICOLL
At Heatherton, an independent girls’ prep school in Amersham, we believe in seeing things di erently. We are constantly challenging ourselves to ask the di cult questions and are continuously learning and evolving to ensure we o er our pupils the very best start in their primary-aged education journey. We believe academic and personal development go hand in hand, so our pupils go on to become successful young people who are a force for good.
Recent research has highlighted the importance of investing in a child’s earliest years, providing the opportunity to develop socially, emotionally and personally, in addition to academically. As part of the Berkhamsted Schools Group, we take pride in a research-led approach which ensures we remain at the forefront of education. A strong understanding of child development is at the heart of our practice. This understanding runs through our carefully constructed curriculum, which
benefits from the freedom to explore areas outside the national curriculum. We are lucky to have the resources, environment, time and ability to go above and beyond – in every direction – what is required. This enables us to help our pupils excel in all areas and, crucially, to experience a diverse and joyous education. While the national curriculum for primary school science has been written to be taught in a classroom, we are fortunate to have a science laboratory where pupils can put their theory into practice. With specialist equipment such as Bunsen burners available for use, every experiment is a gamechanger in the range and breadth of understanding that pupils can achieve. Every subject is an opportunity for pupils to explore and stretch themselves beyond the curriculum. We run exciting trips to The Science Museum, Natural History Museum and Field Study Centre Amersham, where pupils can immerse themselves in learning and experience science as it applies to the real world. Guest speakers
such as Berkhamsted alumnus Suzie Imber, Professor of Space Physics and budding astronaut, inspire our girls to explore their passions and aim high in their endeavours. We provide a bespoke curriculum in Years 5 and 6 which prepares pupils for the rigours of the 11+ exam, scholarship papers and senior school preparation. Pupils are issued their own school Surface device for individual and independent work, providing access to a range of online tools with which topics can be explored in greater depth. However, we believe that preparation for secondary school admission tests should not be crammed into the last few weeks or months of school. We make sure we have securely built up every pupil’s skills, abilities and understanding throughout the entirety of the prep years. Ultimately, the success of our curriculum is reflected in our pupils. The girls leave Heatherton as innovative and resilient young people who are motivated to take their next adventurous step, wherever that may be. Our Year 6 leavers go on to flourish at local grammar schools, Berkhamsted School and other independent or state senior schools, where they continue to build on the fundamental skills, tools and knowledge we have equipped them with. A Heatherton education encourages pupils to see things di erently, teaching them not just what to think, but how to think. It is this culture that sets up our girls for a remarkable future.

DAYS
What is boarding actually like? A pupil at Taunton School gives a first-hand account
am a keen hockey player, being the goalie in our 1st team, so I love that I’m able to train multiple times per week. I also play games in the pool with my housemates every Friday, go to the gym and take part in the Amnesty International club. There is always lots of delicious food available, whether that’s snacks in my boarding house, a sweet treat from the school shop, cooked breakfasts, or the varied home-cooked lunches and dinners.
I chose to come to Taunton School because of the level of hockey on o er. We play at a very high level here, as shown by the fact that we are currently in the semifinals of the national cup. However, we’re not only known for sport, but our brilliant courses, supportive teachers, and stunning campus too. I also love being surrounded by people that want to do well in everything they do, whether that’s academically or in their chosen co-curricular activities,
clubs and teams. That was a big surprise for me to see when I first joined.
Taunton School feels like home to me now and I just love being here. I regularly go home for the weekend to spend time with my family, and this is always very easy to arrange with the school and my boarding house.
I would not hesitate to recommend boarding and studying at Taunton School, you will get so many amazing opportunities and make friends for life.
Visit tauntonschool.co.uk to find out more about our exceptional o ering. We have recently started building a brandnew modern boarding facility on our 56-acre campus with capacity for more than 140 students, giving our senior school its sixth and seventh boarding houses and continuing our campus development masterplan. Completion is scheduled for early 2027.

Sound of music
More than 200 talented musicians, comprised of students, parents, staff and friends of St Albans School and St Albans High School, gathered for the annual Joint Schools’ Choral Society Concert at St Albans Cathedral and Abbey Church, performing an outstanding evening of stunning musical collaboration. The Joint Schools’ Choral Society and Orchestra was dedicated to the memory of Mick Stout, former longstanding Director of Music at St Albans School, who sadly passed away last year.
The event itself marks an annual opportunity for students, parents, staff and the wider community of both St Albans School and St Albans High School to come together and sing major choral repertoire, accompanied by a semiprofessional orchestra and all in the magnificent surroundings of St Albans Cathedral.
The concert, which was largely comprised of repertoire that Mick himself enjoyed, featured Brahms’ Song of Destiny, Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music, Parry’s I Was Glad, concluding with the finale from Beethoven’s Symphony No.9 in D Minor, Op.125. st-albans.herts.sch.uk

WELL READ
A unique literary festival is heading to the Wasing Estate
Wasing Estate has announced the first edition of Well Read, a literary festival that invites acclaimed writers, nature lovers and wellness enthusiasts to gather in a spectacular woodland setting in the heart of Berkshire. Taking place on 25th-26th May within the estate’s ancient woodlands, Well Read goes beyond the traditional literary festival, o ering a captivating blend of talks, conversations, readings and panel discussions alongside live music, immersive outdoor experiences and wellness activities. A phenomenal line-up of authors, including headliners Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, Clare Balding CBE and Melissa Hemsley, will debate, inspire and entertain.
Clare Balding CBE says: “I’m absolutely thrilled to be joining the Well Read Literary Festival at Wasing Estate. It’s a place that truly takes your breath away, and I can’t think of a better backdrop to share my love of nature and animals. There’s something so special about being surrounded by the countryside, where the world feels a little slower, a little quieter. I’m really looking forward to celebrating the wonderful connections we have with the natural world in such a beautiful setting. It’s going to be a joy!”
Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall adds: “Wasing Estate is a beautiful spot, full of life and character – just the kind of place that inspires a deep appreciation for food, nature and the land. I’m looking forward to having some meaningful conversations about where our food comes from, how we can all do our bit to live more sustainably and, of course, celebrating the joys of the outdoors.”
In addition to thought-provoking talks, attendees can participate in breathwork with Rebecca Dennis, wild swimming in the estate’s tranquil lake, take time in the
healing Woodland Sauna and join guided meditation and mindfulness sessions for deep relaxation and clarity. There will also be live music from globally renowned artists, including multi-instrumentalist and integrative music therapist, Gui Alves, and multi-award winning sound and sensory designer Tom Middleton.
Well Read is also designed to be as fun and enriching for children as it is for adults, and Wasing are thrilled to partner with Mud & Guts, an outdoor adventure company, to o er a range of children’s activities.
Well Read is more than just a festival – it is an opportunity for personal transformation. Whether you’re seeking inspiration, relaxation or a stronger connection with nature, this inaugural event promises a rich, immersive experience that will leave you refreshed and inspired.
