December issue highlights

There was a time when I was an incredible snob about pantomime. In my early career as a lifestyle journalist in London, whenever I received news about casting for pantos I gave it short shrift. Luckily, I realised the folly of my ways.

My antipathy is a little odd in hindsight. Panto was my introduction to theatre and I loved it as a kid, I really did. It was a time when all the family met up and went along to our local theatre – I had no idea about the jokes or the stars, but it was bright, bold and great fun.

As I got older, perhaps it was the whole family thing that I rebelled against, but I did form an impression that panto was just for kids and wasn't a serious thing to consider. Then I came across the likes of Plested Brown and Wilsher, a trio of incredibly talented writers and performers, who pour their heart and soul into pantomime, particular at the Corn Exchange in Newbury. Every year it's a complete joy.

So inside this very festive issue, we find out about the work that goes into a Plested Brown and Wilsher panto, plus look at what else is taking place across Berkshire and Buckinghamshire, with plenty of big names preparing to take to the stage. It will undoubtedly be a very Merry Christmas.

Festive TWIST

If you are looking for a pantomime with a di erence this year, look no further than Plested Brown and Wilsher’s Robin Hood and Maid Marian. Amanda Wilsher from the team gives us a sneak peek of what to expect in Newbury

The award-winning Plested Brown and Wilsher return with another #NewburyPanto adventure with Robin Hood and Maid Marian: expect plenty of mischief, mayhem and merry-making! Step into the magical forest of Newburyshire and join the swashbuckling hero Robin and his band of merry outlaws.

The awful Sheri of Newburyshire has been in power for 14 long years, persecuting the poor, rewarding the rich and eating the local swans. But Robin, after a daring stando at the roundabout named in his honour, is feeling deflated. Will he ever defeat the evil Sheri before he and his merry band are locked up for good? Or will (equally swashbuckling) Marian with her smartypants brain, kick-ass moves and a pair of fabulous shoes outwit the dastardly Sheri ?

It promises to be yet another panto masterclass from the Plested Brown and Wilsher team – Adam Brown, Clare Plested and Amanda Wilsher – and the latter sat down with Absolutely to tell us what all the family can expect.

Q What makes your version of Robin Hood and Maid Marian di erent from other retellings of the story?

A Well we’ve set the show locally – led by the evil sheri of Newburyshire, obviously! And all the characters have a twist – Robin Hood has a chip on his shoulder; he’s worshipped by his sweet explorer cousin, Willamina Scarlet; Ferne-A-Dale is our magical, hippy-dippy forest fairy, straight from Coachella; and Marian attempts to keep them and the outlaws – our bumbling, bonkers merry gang – together. Our ever glamourous Nursemaid Nellie keeps a watchful eye over everything, while keeping the other eye open for love…

Q How do you balance keeping traditional panto elements with adding fresh, modern humour for today’s audiences?

A One of the joys of writing panto is giving a great traditional story structure a new twist. We love to play with traditional elements – like the ghost gag – and make it resonate with today’s audience. For example, last year we took Captain Birdseye from the fish finger commercial and found a great way to freak the kids out with it!

AMANDA WILSHER

PHOTO: THE OTHER RICHARD

Q The Sheri of Newburyshire is quite a unique twist – what inspired that idea?

A Our wonderful actor Alex Crandon made the suggestion and we ran with it!

Q Do you write with certain performers in mind, especially when actors like Alex Crandon return as the villain?

A We love writing for specific actors, and when Alex said he wanted to return to Newbury, it honestly made our job so much easier! He joined the conversation early on and suggested that his Sheri could be inspired by those old Western movies – with a dash of Yosemite Sam, one of the classic Looney Tunes villains. So you can expect this year's Sheri to be a deep south, tari -wielding villain hot on Robin Hood’s heels. Yee-haw!

Q What are you most excited for audiences in Newbury to experience in this year’s show?

A Everything! This year's show is a riotous mix of strong characters, high drama, joyous dancing, fabulous music and a dash of anarchic comedy thrown in.

Q Pantomimes are often fast-moving and playful – how much space do you allow for improvisation on stage?

A We try to give our actors moments in the script where they have space to improvise –to play with each other and the audience. It’s great for the audience to see these genuine moments that feel unique to the specific show they’re watching. It also keeps things fresh and alive for the actors. And of course things go wrong… which everyone loves!

“Our golden rule: if it makes us laugh, it is in”

Q Music and comedy are key to your pantos – how do you decide which songs or gags make the cut?

A Our golden rule: if it makes us laugh, it’s in. When it comes to the songs, we love casting the net wide. There’s usually a big pop moment – this year, Benson Boone for all the kids who know every word, alongside something for the grown-ups, like an '80s banger or a classic '90s track to get the mums and dads dancing in the aisles. We also love reworking some of the lyrics to fit our characters – and we’ll happily twist a chart hit to include the odd Newbury reference, like a cheeky mention of the Kennet Centre or Parkway!

ADAM BROWN AND MIRANDA WILFORD
“Panto is completely unique: it's an art form that brings families together in the best possible way”

Q You’ve been creating pantomimes together for years – what’s the secret to a strong collaborative partnership?

A Knowing each other inside out helps! We have a short hand from our years of experience together – so we can work around our strengths and weaknesses as writers. We also still find each other funny so we laugh a lot and that’s very inspiring, creatively!

Q Why the love for pantomime?

A Because it’s usually the first experience children have in a theatre – and with that comes a huge responsibility. Panto is completely unique; nothing else comes close. It’s an art form that brings families together in the best possible way. It’s a place where the jokes fly over the kids’ heads but land perfectly for the adults – and somehow, everyone ends up laughing together. It’s a truly unique family experience, whether you’re four or ninety four.

Q What’s the biggest challenge of writing and staging a panto compared to your other theatre work?

A There can be a lot of expectation from audiences around a panto. People can have firm ideas about what a panto should be – the characters they want to see, the routines they like the best – because they’ve been watching them year on year. With our other work, we create brand new plays from scratch so there’s less expectation. Also, quite often three generations of a family are watching – and each generation needs to be entertained. That’s really unusual and such a privilege to have a wide audience range.

Q Have your experiences in film, theatre, and comedy changed the way you view panto as an art form?

A I think they’ve enhanced it! Panto is such a wonderfully robust art form – you can throw absolutely anything at it. That’s why it’s stood the test of time. It’s always evolving, always finding new ways to surprise and entertain.

Q Finally, if you could bring any character from your previous careers into Sherwood Forest for a cameo, who would it be and why?

A Well it would have to be Adam as Ori from The Hobbit. He’d be very frightened and just try and eat some chips by the fire. I once played a litterbug on skates – that would add some chaos! And Clare has created a huge range of fabulous/awful/ hilarious characters over the years – I’d bring every single one of them into the forest and watch the mayhem ensue!

LIFE Bright side of

How Thatcham artist Sue Lee reacted to devastating news by rediscovering her love for painting

Thatcham-based artist, Sue Lee, who rediscovered her passion for painting during her battle with breast cancer, recently launched a one-month residency at Howarth’s Gallery in Newbury, and Absolutely was there to see it. Every single penny from sales went directly to Newbury Cancer Care, a charity providing practical support to local people living with cancer and life-threatening illnesses. what they achieve in their future careers.

Sue was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer after a routine check that she was invited to earlier than normal; while she could have put it o for another month or two, she decided to go ahead and book in to get it out of the way. The diagnosis was shattering,

and being an aggressive type of breast cancer, she received equally aggressive treatment, but she was incredibly thankful that she had found out early – and for the care she received.

It was during Sue’s treatment that she began painting again, creating vibrant handdrawn, hand painted, mandala-style pieces inspired by nature and di erent cultures. It was a creative escape from the mental and physical toll of the illness, but also the chemotherapy. “It can leave you feeling really nauseous, weak and exhausted, and while I’m usually a very happy-go-lucky, positive person, it’s really hard to stay upbeat about these things all of the time – especially when you don’t feel well,” Sue says.

“I’ve always been drawn to bright colours – whether it’s in clothing, home décor, my nails, or hair accessories. I had lots of di erent coloured headscarves during my chemo

“These pieces are about bringing joy and brightness into your home, even when life feels dark and heavy”

journey. When I started painting, I used those colours deliberately. They lifted me when I was at my lowest, and I wanted to create work that could do the same for others. These pieces are about bringing joy and brightness into your home, even when life feels dark and heavy.”

Breast cancer remains the most common cancer in the UK, with nearly 56,000 people diagnosed each year and around one in two patients reporting anxiety or depression during treatment. Local services like Newbury Cancer Care play a vital role, o ering free hospital transport for patients across West Berkshire, also helping with counselling, complementary therapies, co ee mornings for escapism, and respite care for families – you never know how much of a di erence these things make until you need them yourself.

Sue adds: “Cancer is a really scary illness, and it’s very taboo in a way, as nobody wants to talk about it, it makes it a very lonely situation if you don’t have a strong family network. You also can’t drive during treatment, so Newbury Cancer Care’s free transport, where friendly volunteers pick you up and take you

to treatment, really does mean the world. It’s for this reason that I really want to give something back to them. I couldn’t have been more grateful for their support.”

Claire Howarth, fellow artist and the owner of Howarth’s Gallery, added: “Sue’s work is bold, intricate and full of joy. It’s incredibly moving to see how her journey with cancer has been transformed into something so positive. We were very proud to host her first residency and to help raise funds for a cause that touches so many families locally – bigger charities are doing fantastic work, but we should never forget the smaller ones who are grafting at ground-level.”

The residency may be over, but the fundraising continues online – so at this time of year, when charity really should be on your mind, perhaps Sue’s work will be that unique present you have been looking for

SOMETHING UNIQUE

Want Christmas cards with a di erence and help a good cause? Then you will want to read about the Mouth and Foot Painting Artists

Here at Absolutely we are always on the lookout for art with a di erence – so stumbling upon a powerful photo series by Ian Treherne was certainly a gift. The series captured the UK’s Mouth and Foot Painting Artists (MFPA), celebrating their extraordinary talent with a stunning image gallery shot by the acclaimed disabled photographer, also known asThe Blind Photographer. This unique collaboration places a spotlight on these exceptional artists and their artistic process demonstrating that disability has not been a barrier to their creative outputs. One in seven people globally identify as disabled, yet the disabled community remains facing many barriers in society, in the workplace and often with less visibility in mainstream arts and culture spaces.

MFPA artist Tom Yendell says: “Being part of the Mouth and Foot Painting Artists has not only allowed me to express my creativity, but has also given me a platform to advocate for greater recognition of disabled artists in the cultural sector. It’s time for the arts community to embrace our talents and ensure that we are represented in all areas – from decisionmaking to programming. This gallery, captured through Ian’s distinctive lens, is a step towards breaking down barriers and fostering a more inclusive environment for all artists, regardless of their abilities.”

Despite the excitement of a new political landscape, there has been little in terms of clear commitments to disabled people, particularly disabled creatives. This project maintains the positive momentum created by the Paris Paralympics last year, where athletes once again broke stereotypes and raised the profile of disabled talent on a global scale.

The MFPA is proud to unveil this new image series that places disabled artists front and centre. This series captures these talented individuals and has transformed their personal challenges into artistic strength, producing work that is both beautiful and impactful.

By being members of MFPA, these artists’ work is turned into a broad range of Christmas products – cards, wrapping paper, calendars, and more – with proceeds directly supporting their ability to maintain sustainable, independent livelihoods.

Ian Treherne, born with RP Type 2 Usher Syndrome, which causes both blindness and deafness, has made it his mission to document the world through photography. His imagery, known for capturing light, texture, and atmosphere, brings out the depth of each MFPA artist’s story. Ian, whose collaborations with brands like Apple and Channel 4 Paralympics have earned him national acclaim, uses his work to break boundaries and challenge societal perceptions of disability. In this series, he highlights the beauty and strength of the artists, reinforcing the message that disabled people deserve equal representation and credit for their achievements in the arts.

“As a photographer with my own experiences of disability, I am deeply passionate about using my lens to highlight the extraordinary talent and stories of disabled artists,” Ian says. “This gallery is not just about showcasing great art; it’s about challenging perceptions and proving that creativity knows no bounds. My hope is that these powerful images inspire others to see the potential within every disabled individual, and to understand that their voices and talents deserve to be celebrated and heard.”

Inside the whimsical worlds of Wes Anderson: why this new exhibition is a colourful addition to Christmas

Aworld of pastel palettes, precise symmetry, and eccentric characters emerges at the Design Museum this month as it becomes the first venue in the UK to host a full retrospective of Wes Anderson’s cinematic universe.

Titled Wes Anderson: The Archives, the exhibition will showcase over 600 objects from the filmmaker’s private collection –many of which have never been seen by the public before. Among the treasures are

original costumes, stop-motion puppets, hand-painted props, storyboards, and even Anderson’s spiral-bound notebooks, filled with character ideas and scene sketches in his unmistakable handwriting.

Announced on 1st May (Anderson’s birthday), the exhibition marks a major collaboration between the Design Museum and la Cinémathèque française, where the show originally debuted earlier this year. The London iteration will be a reimagined and expanded version, adding more than

100 new items and shining a brighter spotlight on the intricate design process behind Anderson’s beloved films.

At the heart of Anderson’s work lies a deep a ection for the material. “Every single object in a Wes Anderson film is very personal to him,” explains Lucia Savi, Head of Curatorial and Interpretation at the Design Museum and co-curator of the exhibition. “They’re not simply props – they are fully formed pieces of art and design.” That philosophy is evident in the centrepiece

of the exhibition: the monumental, candypink model of the Grand Budapest Hotel’s façade, which spans over three metres in width. Used in the 2014 film to depict the fictional European hotel, the model embodies the director’s commitment to hand-built cinematic worlds – constructed with as much care as the characters who inhabit them.

Other highlights include the vending machines from Asteroid City (2023), Gwyneth Paltrow’s iconic FENDI fur coat from The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), and the vibrantly costumed stop-motion puppets of fantastical sea creatures from The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004).

And, yes, Boy with Apple will be there too – the “priceless” Renaissance-style portrait that fuels the plot of The Grand Budapest Hotel. Commissioned from British artist Michael Taylor for the film, it’s a winking nod to Anderson’s talent for worldbuilding down to the last ornate frame.

Spanning three decades of filmmaking, the exhibition follows a broadly chronological journey through Anderson’s career, from his early days directing Bottle Rocket – the 1996 feature that launched a long-standing creative partnership with Owen Wilson – to his recent Oscar-winning short, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar (2023).

Visitors will be treated to a rare screening of Anderson’s original 14-minute Bottle Rocket short, created in 1993, and can trace the evolution of his visual language through concept art, polaroids, and meticulously preserved ephemera.

Anderson, it turns out, is something of an archivist himself. Following the production of Bottle Rocket, he discovered that everything had been sold o by the studio. From Rushmore onward, he began personally salvaging props, costumes, and design pieces from each film – building what is now a vast archive of cinematic memory.

“The show highlights the analog heart of Anderson’s work”

While Anderson is rightly celebrated for his singular visual style, Wes Anderson: The Archives also gives due credit to the many creative collaborators who help bring his visions to life. From Oscar-winning costume designer Milena Canonero to puppet-maker Andy Gent and composer Alexandre Desplat, the exhibition includes works by a veritable ensemble of Anderson’s behind-the-scenes cast.

Full costumes from Rushmore, The French Dispatch and The Life Aquatic are featured, as are the head-to-toe looks of recurring Anderson muses like Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Jason Schwartzman, and Scarlett Johansson. The exhibition’s sections on Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009) and Isle of Dogs (2018) dive deep into the craft of stop-motion animation, with original puppets, miniature sets, and maquettes giving a behind-thescenes look at the painstaking process of animating Anderson’s most tactile films.

“The show really highlights the handmade, analog heart of Anderson’s work,” says Johanna Agerman Ross, Chief Curator at the Design Museum. “In an age of CGI and green screens, Wes’s use of real objects –real textures – feels like a quiet rebellion.”

Wes Anderson: The Archives is not just a film exhibition – it’s a design showcase. Anderson’s films are an exercise in worldbuilding through objects: ornate luggage, record players, typewriters, badges, books, tents, paintings, and cakes all help to create immersive, rule-bound worlds governed by their own sense of time and place. This exhibition doesn’t just pull back the curtain on those objects – it invites visitors to step inside them.

Fairmont Windsor Park played host to Diwali Reverie in late October, an exclusive evening celebrating art, culture, and giving back. The event showcased the latest exhibition by Zara Muse, a former City of London trader turned internationally acclaimed artist, whose bold, sculptural paintings explore identity and transformation through the luminous spirit of Diwali.

Hosted by Meera Syal, the evening featured a heartfelt Q&A in which Zara shared her inspiring journey from discovering painting as therapy while caring for her late mother, to her recent travels in India that ignited the vision for this collection.

Guests enjoyed a Diwali-inspired culinary experience and took part in a charity art auction conducted by Edward Rising, which achieved total sales of £120,750, including a £6,037.50 donation to The Arora Charitable Foundation. The foundation supports initiatives that empower communities through education, health, and social development.

The event drew an influential gathering of British Asians from across the arts, business, and philanthropy. Among the notable attendees was actor, and Europe’s first

south asian stunt woman Ayesha Hussain. Zara Muse continues to captivate global audiences. Her portrait of Malala Yousafzai sold at Bonhams in April 2025 for £51,200, further cementing her place as one of the UK’s most dynamic contemporary artists.

In addition to the Diwali Reverie exhibition, Zara Muse’s artworks are displayed year-round at Fairmont Windsor Park’s 1215 Bar and Restaurant, as part of an ongoing luxury partnership between the artist and the hotel.

RENEGADE BREWERY

renegadebrewery.co.uk

Back in 1995, Dave and Helen Maggs fired up a little five-barrel brewhouse tucked behind the Pot Kiln pub in Frilsham. That tiny setup was the start of what’s now Renegade Brewery. By 1999, demand had already outgrown the space, so the team moved into the village bakery with a 10-barrel kit. A few years (and plenty of pints) later, production finally found a permanent home at the Old Dairy. These days, it’s a 36-barrel brewhouse capable of brewing more than 10,000 pints at a time, complete with its own packaging line. The last big expansion also added a Shop, Taproom & Kitchen – a welcoming spot that’s become a go-to for families, dog walkers, beer lovers, and even local businesses. One of the very first beers brewed was Good Old Boy, a 4% Best Bitter. It’s been a favourite since day one, thanks to its classic notes of blackberry and caramel, brewed with 100% English ingredients. Fast forward to 2015, and Renegade Lager joined the line-up – a crisp, refreshing pilsner-style beer that quickly shot up the charts as a bestseller. More recently, brews like Brewski Peach Lager have stolen the

show, while limited editions such as Taiga West Coast Pale Ale (yes, brewed with recycled Christmas trees for that piney kick!) have kept things interesting. Then there’s Hazy Rider NEIPA – originally a seasonal special, but so loved it had to become a permanent part of the range.

In late 2021, Renegade entered a new chapter when the Yattendon Group stepped in to secure the brewery’s future. Their vision? To keep Renegade firmly rooted as a local institution while shaping it into a longterm, community-focused business with an inclusive vibe and strong sustainability goals. Today, the brewery uses malt grown right on the Yattendon Estate, English hops, and even locally foraged ingredients when possible. On the green front, they’ve invested in over 1,000 solar panels, a nitrogen generation plant to cut down CO2 reliance and delivery emissions, plus an in-house waste management system that ensures nothing goes to landfill.

The Renegade Taproom & Kitchen has become the beating heart of it all – a relaxed, open space where anyone and everyone can enjoy imaginative beers, good food, and plenty of stories. From those humble beginnings behind a pub to today’s forward-thinking, eco-minded craft

brewery, Renegade’s journey has been all about resilience and reinvention. With bold beers, a commitment to green innovation, and the support of the Yattendon Estate, Renegade is raising a glass to the local community, celebrating diversity, and brewing with an eye on a sustainable future.

SIREN CRAFT BREW

ELUSIVE BREWING

sirencraftbrew.com/elusivebrewing.com

In the middle of Berkshire you will find not one, but two fantastic awardwinning breweries mere minutes apart. The Hogwood Industrial Estate in Finchampstead is home to Siren Craft Brew and Elusive Brewing. The former, famous for Soundwave, Caribbean Chocolate Cake and the gluten free favourite Lumina, while the latter –though smaller in size – punches above its weight with the superb and awardwinning West Coast IPA Oregon Trail,

as well as a great line in hazy IPAs and the lesser spotted Black IPA style.

Both breweries are fiercely independent, and enjoy a friendly rivalry. A recent expansion at Elusive means there’s a greater focus on Tap Yard service, with classic games consoles dotted around to tie in with the brands 8-bit style. At Siren, the Tap Yard is a flagship venue: ten lines of brewery-fresh beer, rotating specials, a fridge stocked full of cans, indoor and outdoor space, and regular tastings.

Both breweries o er regular festival events on site. In 2025 Siren celebrated its

12th year in style, and in September hosted the Time Hops II festival, bringing some of the world’s best breweries to Berkshire. The closeness of Siren and Elusive gives Finchampstead a rare local microscene – perhaps only replicated nearby in Windsor where Two Flints and Indie Rabble occupy consecutive railway arches. Together, they signal the strength of the local beer scene: independent, awardwinning, and community-centred. The two breweries don’t just compete – they complement each other, o ering a richer, bolder brewery-hop itinerary for anyone visiting Berkshire’s craft beer frontier.

STRONGER SMARTER SIMPLER

The benefits of working out at home with hand weights and bands

In the age of convenience, more people are ditching crowded gyms for home-based workouts – and for good reason. You don’t need bulky machines or expensive memberships to build strength, improve flexibility, and boost your overall health. With just a set of hand weights and resistance bands, your living room can become your own personal fitness studio.

1. MAXIMUM RESULTS, MINIMAL EQUIPMENT

Hand weights and resistance bands may be small, but their impact is anything but. Dumbbells allow for targeted muscle engagement, whether you’re performing

equipment, and juggling your schedule can sabotage the best intentions. But working out at home removes all those barriers. In just 20-30 minutes a day, you can get a full-body workout with minimal setup and zero travel. Hand weights and bands also encourage consistency. Their portability means you can keep them visible – in a basket by the couch or under your desk – so it’s easier to squeeze in a quick set during a break or between meetings. And consistency is the real secret to fitness success.

3.

LOW IMPACT, HIGH REWARD

Resistance bands are especially popular for people recovering from injuries or looking for a lower-impact option. They provide controlled resistance that’s easier on the joints while still strengthening muscles. Similarly, hand weights o er a manageable step up from bodyweight exercises without overloading the body. These tools also promote better form and balance. Unlike machines that guide your motion, free weights and bands force your body to stabilize itself. That means you’re not just working individual muscles –you’re also strengthening your core and improving coordination with every move.

4. COST-EFFECTIVE AND SPACE-SAVING

bicep curls, shoulder presses, or squats. Meanwhile, resistance bands – lightweight and incredibly versatile – can add challenge to virtually any exercise, promoting muscle activation and control.

These tools let you modify intensity on the fly. Want a heavier workout? Grab a thicker band or increase your dumbbell weight. Prefer a lighter session? Adjust accordingly. This flexibility means your workout evolves with you, whether you’re a beginner or already in great shape.

2. SAVE TIME, STAY CONSISTENT

One of the biggest hurdles to fitness is time. Commuting to the gym, waiting for

You don’t need a dedicated home gym to get in shape. A couple of hand weights and a few resistance bands can cost less than a single month’s gym membership. They take up hardly any space and can be stored in a drawer, closet, or under the bed when not in use. Plus, there are countless free workout videos and apps tailored to weights and bands, so you’ll never run out of routines to try. Whether you’re following a 10-minute core session or a full 45-minute strength circuit, you can progress without spending a dime more.

Fitness doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. With a pair of hand weights and a set of resistance bands, you can build a consistent, e ective, and sustainable workout habit from the comfort of your home. It’s not just about convenience – it’s about taking control of your health on your terms.

DESIGN OF tomorrow

Want to know what’s hot in interiors in 2026? Graham & Brown may just have the answer

Each autumn, celebrated interiors brand Graham & Brown announces its Design of the Year and Colour of the Year. For 2026, they are celebrating the beauty of craftsmanship and drawing inspiration from ethereal elements and natural beauty. They have revealed the 2026 Design of the Year to be Eternal Weave, Mural of the Year as Eternal City and Colour of the Year the glorious sounding Divine Damson.

DESIGN OF THE YEAR:

ETERNAL WEAVE

This magical and whimsical design is heavily influenced by nature, mythology and the craftsmanship of the designs that come to life through texture, colour and storytelling. This detailed and intricate work of art features tropical flowers, plants, birds and reptiles in jewel colours to bring this exotic and captivating design to life.

The Graham & Brown in-house design studio drew inspiration from ancient textiles, weaving a continuous thread of creativity that has been passed down through generations. The hand-painted tapestry pays homage to the artisans who came before, with a fantastical design that celebrates storytelling through the ages. The mystical element to the design taps into the allure of an enchanted garden, helping to turn homes into a whimsical space that evokes a sense of magic.

This year’s wallpaper design features a hand painted look, inspired by a piece of

artwork from Graham & Brown’s archive of over 50,000 pieces. The archival piece had a hand-stitched appearance and rich texture, which the design team sought to recreate for the Design of the Year 2026.

The final creation is brought to life with a vibrant palette, intricate detailing, and expressive sketches that together evoke an extraordinary, mythical vision. Eternal Weave is available in six colourways and this design is produced as a double-width set, necessitating the use of two coordinated rolls (A and B) to achieve the complete horizontal repeat.

The inspiration for the mural of the year, Eternal City, was taken from the architecture and textiles of the Pink City of Jaipur; this beautiful ancient city has a rich heritage and a unique charm that is highly regarded by artisans around the world. Graham & Brown designer Victoria Davison undertook the task of meticulously hand-drawing and painting this intricate mural, a process that took several months

in the studio. Her technique was inspired by traditional Indian miniaturist painting, known for its exquisite detail achieved using fine brushes and mineral pigments. Her intricate detailing brings the design’s vibrant cityscape to life through jeweltoned colours, botanical motifs, and delicate linework – resulting in a piece that truly delights the senses.

Paula Taylor, Stylist and Trend Specialist at Graham & Brown, says: “The Designs of the Year draw inspiration from the makers who came before, reflecting a timeless human desire to explore texture, colour, and narrative. This storytelling was often rich in vibrant hues and intricate scenes of mythic tales and royal life; they portray gods, demons, fantastical beings, and sacred symbols. These designs not only preserve artistic skills and inspire innovation, but also embody cultural continuity. In many traditions, they are cherished as sacred heirlooms, offering a tangible link to the divine.”

COLOUR OF THE YEAR:

DIVINE DAMSON

A perfect deep damson shade, the Colour of the Year 2026 is a timeless and versatile colour that suits a variety of styles and environments. The dark damson colour evokes a sense of elegance, luxury and sophistication. Versatile and timeless, it suits a wide range of settings from casual to formal, a classic colour that transcends fleeting trends that will never go out of style. As a colour Divine Damson can come across as playful or sophisticated. Its versatility makes it suitable year-round offering a cocooning, comforting feel in the colder months, while in summer, natural sunlight brings out its vibrant depth allowing it to transition seamlessly across the seasons.

Paula Taylor says about the Colour of the Year: “Divine Damson brings a dramatic flair to any space, its subtle violet undertone adding a touch of refined elegance. The dark cherry red colour feels bold and polished, making a strong visual statement. Divine Damson works well as a standalone colour as it’s such a vivid and rich colour. You can also soften its intensity with grounding neutrals like Chesterfield or Glimmerous. When combined with muted shades like pastels or warm neutrals, it levels out the bold colour by adding warmth and balance. Soft greys will balance the intensity and keep a modern look, whereas earthy neutral tones will complement the richness beautifully.”

Like all Graham & Brown paint, Divine Damson is an eco-paint, is water-based, odourless and ultra-low VOC, resulting in a more environmentally friendly product. The paint cans are fully recyclable and

there is no animal testing involved in any Graham & Brown products. The Colour of the Year is also available as made to measure curtains and Roman blinds.

Iona Graham, of Graham & Brown, says: “We’re incredibly proud to unveil our Colour and Design of the Year for 2026. This collection is the result of months of dedication and creativity from our talented team, who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that emerging trends are not only reflected, but also lead the way in our designs. At Graham & Brown, we bring nearly 80 years of craftsmanship, innovation, and design heritage to everything we do. As a fourth-generation family-run business, it’s a privilege to take this legacy from our home in Blackburn, which has been our home from the beginning, and share it with the world.”

Danish classics

Carl Hansen & Søn expands its Nanna and Jørgen Ditzel collection with the Vita sofa and ND55 coffee table

Nanna Ditzel and Jørgen Ditzel are two of the biggest names in Danish design in recent times, and their bold and innovative approach to design broke with the strict functionalism of the 1950s. The couple designed furniture that encouraged play, freedom of movement and discussion. The Vita Sofa and the ND55 Coffee Table are a testament to this curiosity, and are now joining Carl Hansen & Søn’s extensive collection of Danish classics.

ND52 VITA SOFA

Nanna and Jørgen Ditzel’s three children had a major influence on the couple’s approach to design, and the sofa from 1952 is named after their daughter Vita. The sculptural shape reflects the Ditzels’ experimental approach with its floating, open shell that seems to balance freely on an elegant wooden frame. The sofa’s organic design idiom, with its soft shapes, high back, and armrests, creates a sense of serenity that generously invites you to take a seat. Beautiful from every angle, the exposed solid wood frame lends the sofa an understated look and with its tight upholstery, the sofa is effortlessly stylish

and inviting – suitable for both private homes and the contract market.

The Vita Sofa is made by the skilled cabinetmakers and upholsterers at Carl Hansen & Søn using responsibly sourced materials, and the seat cushions, buttons and backrests are meticulously hand-upholstered in either fabric or leather.

ND55 COFFEE TABLE

The ND55 Coffee Table from 1955 is designed with a playful approach to functionality. At first glance, it appears to be a simple coffee table – but a closer look reveals a beautifully integrated, practical pullout feature. The fixed extension leaf can be easily lifted up and pushed in towards the centre of the table to create more table space. Crafted from solid oak or walnut, the table features rounded edges and brushed brass fittings. It is manufactured at the Carl Hansen & Søn factory in Denmark.

Knud Erik Hansen, CEO and third generation owner-manager of Carl Hansen & Søn, says: “Nanna and Jørgen Ditzel were the industry’s ‘ensemble terrible’, constantly pushing boundaries both intellectually and technically, and never taking no for an answer. And thank goodness for that! They quickly developed into a recognised

Both pieces of furniture are produced as close to the original versions as possible

designer duo, achieving success both in Denmark and internationally. Today, we are therefore particularly proud to expand our collection with two more playful pieces from the Ditzel family.”

Dennie and Vita Ditzel, daughters of Nanna and Jørgen Ditzel, say: “It means a lot that a renowned furniture manufacturer like Carl Hansen & Søn is relaunching the sofa and coffee table – it has been important to us that production remains in Danish hands, and that no compromises are taken with regard to quality, craftsmanship and aesthetics, but that both pieces of furniture are produced as close to the original versions as possible. Carl Hansen & Søn has successfully refined the original designs, launching the furniture with deep respect for both their form and history. We’re immensely grateful that the sofa and coffee table will be given a new lease of life as part of Carl Hansen & Søn’s portfolio – and we think they deserve it.”

The ND52 Vita Sofa and ND55 Coffee Table are available in stores from December 2025.

The New Meaning of

LUXURY

Exploring sustainability rules in 2026

Luxury in the home has always reflected the priorities of its time. Today, a quiet transformation is underway. Where extravagance and spectacle once defined aspiration, luxury in 2026 is measured by something more enduring: how a home makes us feel, how responsibly it is made, and how well it performs over its lifetime. Sustainability has moved from the margins into the mainstream of highend design, not as an ethical add-on, but as the clearest expression of taste, intelligence and long-term value.

Across Buckinghamshire and Berkshire, a growing number of homeowners are seeking spaces that enhance wellbeing, sit gently within their surroundings and support a more thoughtful way of living. The homes that stand out now are those that breathe well, age well and serve their families with subtlety rather than show. Sustainability has become the new language of luxury because it prioritises clarity, comfort and longevity over excess.

What follows are the principles shaping the most desirable homes of this decade – a framework guiding how to design with conscience, elegance and permanence in mind.

PERFORMANCE FIRST

True luxury begins with the fabric of the building. Before finishes, furnishings or features, the integrity of the envelope determines how a home will feel in daily life. High levels of insulation, consistent airtightness and careful detailing are what create warm winters, cool summers and the absence of draughts or cold corners. This quiet precision brings a calm that no amount of styling can imitate. It also future-proofs a home against rising energy costs and evolving regulations, protecting comfort and value for decades to come.

DESIGNED FOR LIGHT

Light is one of the most powerful materials in architecture. The way it enters a room, shifts across surfaces and changes through the seasons can completely transform how a space feels and functions. In the new language of luxury, daylight is not an afterthought, but a design driver. Larger openings, refined proportions, thoughtful orientation and layered glazing strategies all work to optimise natural light while avoiding glare and heat gain. When daylight is handled with intention, a home feels uplifting, expansive and deeply connected to its setting – a daily luxury that costs little to run and enriches life immeasurably.

HOMES THAT BREATHE

Air quality is now recognised as a defining aspect of wellbeing in the home. Breathable materials, balanced ventilation and low-VOC finishes create healthier indoor environments that support calm and clarity of mind. Lime or clay plasters, timber and natural fibres help regulate humidity and reduce airborne pollutants, reinforcing a stable and comfortable internal climate. A home that breathes properly feels fresher, cleaner and more restorative.

PROVENANCE AND CRAFT

Today’s homeowners increasingly value materials with traceable origins and genuine craftsmanship. Locally sourced stone, British timber, artisan-made joinery and natural finishes bring character and cultural depth, while also reducing transport impact. Provenance has become a mark of discernment; it signals care, intention and a respect for the narrative of place. Craft elevates the everyday and gives a home integrity that cannot be replicated through mass production.

CIRCULAR DESIGN

Longevity and adaptability have become central to luxury. Designing for repair, reuse and flexible layouts helps spaces evolve over time while reducing waste. Reclaimed materials, modular details and low-impact construction choices contribute to a home that is both responsible and timeless. Circular thinking shifts the focus from short-term aesthetics to lasting substance and stewardship.

A NEW LEGACY OF LUXURY

Sustainability and luxury are no longer opposing ideas. Together, they offer a richer and more resilient vision for how we live – one that values craftsmanship, longevity and wellbeing as much as aesthetics. For homeowners looking to create spaces that stand the test of time, these principles provide clarity and direction. A sustainable home is not only kinder to the planet; it is more pleasurable to inhabit, more responsible to own and more enduring as an investment.

The greatest luxury now is a home that feels effortless, nurtures daily life and leaves a light footprint for the generations who will follow. That is the new meaning of luxury in 2026. And for many, it is the only definition that makes sense.

BEAUTY

Since 1947, Jensen Beds has been crafting highquality beds in Norway – combining passion, science and craftsmanship to

help you achieve a good night’s sleep

Beauty sleep isn’t just a saying – it’s science. Research shows that people are perceived as more attractive when well-rested, and that lack of sleep affects not only mood, but also skin and immune function. Good sleep is essential for how we look, feel and perform.

When you sleep well, your body gets the time it needs to repair itself, regenerate cells and clear away waste. It’s during deep, restorative sleep that both body and mind truly recover.

Sleep is a vital beauty secret that works wonders from inside out. During deep sleep, our body enters a highly regenerative state, where skin cells repair and renew themselves. This process boosts collagen production, a key protein that

keeps skin firmer and elastic, helping to prevent wrinkles and sagging. Without enough good sleep, collagen production slow downs, contributing to premature ageing and dull complexion.

Also, sleep reduces the stress hormone cortisol, which when elevated, causes inflammation, breakouts, and sensitive skin issues. Good sleep promotes blood flow to skin, delivering essential nutrients and oxygen for a radiant glow. Lack of sleep disrupts skin’s moisture balance, leading to dryness and fine lines, and increases dark circles and puffiness around eyes.

Scientific studies indicate that the critical hours between 9 pm and midnight are the best time for skin healing. So regular, restful sleep isn’t only for feeling fresh – it’s crucial for youthful, vibrant skin.

Prioritising sleep is perhaps the most effective, natural way to maintain beauty over a long time.

YEAR-ROUND

LIVING

Make the most of your outdoor space with Crown Pavilions’ garden rooms, gazebos and equestrian spaces

As December’s early dusk falls and the garden takes on its winter silhouette, luxury outdoor living often seems to retreat. But for homeowners who demand the best, the garden shouldn’t hibernate; it should perform. That’s where Crown Pavilions steps in, with its bespoke garden rooms, handcrafted wooden gazebos, and premium equestrian buildings. Each is engineered to deliver elegance, comfort, and style throughout the year, not just when the sun shines.

Winter is a pivotal moment for the garden, a time when many spaces become purely decorative or unused. Yet it’s precisely during these colder months that the right structure, if well insulated, thoughtfully designed, and weatherproofed, can transform your garden into a true year-round extension of your home. Crown Pavilions emphasises that its buildings are created for all-year-round use. Their gazebos incorporate marinegrade blinds that zip together to create a weatherproof seal, infrared ceiling heaters, and solid infill panels. These features ensure that no matter the weather, the space remains cosy, comfortable, and inviting throughout winter.

Garden Rooms For All Seasons

While the term garden room might evoke the long days of spring or summer, discerning buyers recognise that it should be just as usable in December as it is in June. Crown Pavilions’ bespoke garden rooms are fully insulated, doubleglazed, and built to residential-grade standards. Each is designed to withstand the cold and deliver everyday comfort. Picture this: a garden room serving as your home office or gym on a crisp December morning. Fog drifts over bare trees outside, yet inside you’re warm, focused, and inspired. The pitched-roof Heritage Collection, for instance, offers exceptional ceiling height, skylights,

and slimline electric heaters with thermostats. Every detail is designed to help you enjoy the space far beyond the summer-only mindset.

Gazebos: Al Fresco Living Without Compromise

Then there are the gazebos, often thought of as summer “party huts” or open-air lounges. Crown Pavilions challenges that assumption. Their luxury wooden gazebos feature design innovations that are ideal for winter, including full-height marinegrade blinds that zip shut, robust timber posts, cedar-shingle roofs, and integrated heating options.

Imagine hosting an early-evening December cocktail party beneath your gazebo’s roof. Lights shimmer across the frost-touched lawn while a gentle heater hums above. The structure keeps out the chill, becoming a true living room for the outdoors. As the brochure puts it, “You want to be certain that your gazebo won’t simply look stunning in the spring, summer and autumn, but that it will also cope with British winters.”

Crown Equestrian

Beyond the garden, Crown Equestrian brings the same uncompromising quality to stables, barns, tack rooms, and riding arenas. Built for performance, safety, and visual harmony, these structures complement their rural surroundings while providing outstanding durability and functionality.

From private estates to professional equestrian facilities, Crown’s bespoke approach ensures every design meets the needs of both horse and rider. Each structure is created with architectural detailing, superior materials, and true all-weather practicality.

Why Choose Crown Pavilions?

What sets Crown Pavilions apart is not only the product, but the service and craftsmanship behind it. The company carries the prestigious Marque of Excellence and is TRADA-certified, meaning every timber joint, panel, and finish is engineered to last.

With over 20 years of British craftsmanship and thousands of installations across the UK and Europe, including many for high-profile clients, Crown Pavilions has earned its reputation as ‘The World’s Finest Garden Rooms and Gazebos’.

For those who expect true luxury, the extras matter. From bespoke finishes and engineered oak flooring to fully customised layouts, integrated lighting and heating, every detail is considered to make your garden building feel like part of the home, not an add-on.

A warm GLOW

Gerrards Cross-based Layered Lounge have launched a new Christmas collection, perfect for creating that cosy festive feel

Layered Lounge is a Gerrards Cross–based homeware brand known for calm, quietly luxurious interiors – think natural textures, neutral palettes, and pieces you can mix and layer season after season. The company’s aesthetic draws from modern coastal style with nods to Scandinavian simplicity and the relaxed polish of the Hamptons. That design DNA flows through everything they do, from rattan and reclaimed-wood furniture to glassware, bedding, and seasonal décor.

THE LAYERED LOUNGE LOOK

If you’re new to the brand, start with the idea of “layering” as a verb: adding depth and warmth with natural fibre baskets, linen cushions, pale woods, matte ceramics, and soft lighting. The palette stays soothing – bone, taupe, stone, and a little black for definition – so nothing feels over-styled. It’s a style that plays well with real life: durable, tactile, and meant to be handled every day. You see that philosophy echoed in their core categories: rattan, reclaimed timber, marble accents, and relaxed dining pieces designed to linger around.

SPOTLIGHT: THE NEW CHRISTMAS COLLECTION

Christmas is where Layered Lounge’s “quiet luxury” comes into its own. The 2025 holiday edit focuses on simple forms, natural materials, and a soft, festive glow – decorations that feel considered rather than cluttered.

The collection spans handcrafted wreaths, paper stars and snowflakes, elegant tree ornaments, glass and ceramic accents, centrepieces, and candles. The through line is tactility and tone: off-whites, antique finishes, muted metallics, and a hint of Burgundy for richness, all designed to sit harmoniously with the brand’s year-round pieces.

Paper decorations are a signature this season. Expect antique-white stars and detailed snowflakes in sculptural silhouettes that make a big impact without heavy glitter or brash colour. These foldable paper pieces are lightweight, reusable, and easy to store – practical if you like a dramatic look that goes up (and down) in minutes. On the tree or hung in a window, they read festive but restrained, perfectly aligned with Layered Lounge’s less-is-more approach. Garlands and lighting do the heavy lifting for atmosphere. The brand has been previewing new garlands paired with vintage-style LED lights, which give that warm, candle-like glow without heat or fuss. Draped along a mantel, woven through a staircase, or laid down the centre of a table, they deliver the “cosy” everyone wants in December while keeping the look refined. Burgundy paper stars make a cameo here

too, introducing a deep, wintry accent that plays nicely with brass, stoneware, and natural wood.

Tabletop styling is another focus: think ceramic houses for a soft twinkle on a sideboard, sets of small reindeer, and understated centrepieces that don’t fight with food or conversation. Because the forms are simple and the colours neutral, you can layer in linens and glassware you already own, elevating the whole table without starting from scratch. It’s a practical take on Christmas – swap in a few seasonally tuned hero pieces, then build the rest from your everyday collection.

Wreaths and door décor follow the same brief. Rather than heavily decorated designs, the selection leans toward handcrafted looks and natural textures that feel welcoming from Advent through to New Year. Pair them with a cluster of pillar candles or a lantern at the threshold and you’ve got a classic doorway moment that won’t date. The overall effect is festive but not fussy.

HOW TO STYLE IT AT HOME

Pick a spine colour and stick to it. Layered Lounge’s Christmas palette is soft – antique white, warm ivory, muted metallic, and a few deep notes (like burgundy). Choosing a single metallic (brass or pewter) and one accent hue keeps the scheme calm and cohesive.

Go big on texture, light on sparkle. Mix paper stars with wool throws, raw-edged linen runners, rattan trays, and matte ceramics. Add warm LED strings or battery-operated candles instead of high-

shine ornaments. You’ll get depth and glow without visual noise.

Layer, don’t load. Start with a natural base (garland or greenery), then add a single statement – oversized paper snowflakes, a ceramic village, or a trio of reindeer – rather than lots of small, competing pieces. It feels intentional and makes tidying easier on Boxing Day.

The appeal of Layered Lounge’s Christmas collection is that it translates their year-round ethos directly into the holidays. By treating festive décor as another layer – one that complements your existing furniture and finishes – you get a home that feels celebratory without becoming unrecognisable for six weeks. It’s practical, sustainable (many pieces are reusable and neutral enough to re-style), and distinctly grown-up. For anyone in Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and beyond who wants their December to feel calm, inviting, and effortlessly put together, it’s a compelling option from a local brand with design at its core.

WHEN CHILDREN BELONG, THEY BELIEVE

WHERE THE MAGIC

BEGINS

And believing turns to becoming. Exploring what makes Clayesmore so special

Wouldn’t every child love to go to Hogwarts?

Clayesmore is about as close as you can get, not just because of its iconic turret or incredible food, but because it’s a place where every child discovers their own special strengths. Whether you’re curious and creative, bold and adventurous, thoughtful and kind, or driven and determined, Clayesmore is where you discover who you are – and all you can become.

Tucked away in the rolling Dorset countryside, Clayesmore has spent over 130 years weaving this quiet kind of magic – the kind that doesn’t rely on spells, but on connection, care, and curiosity. Success here isn’t defined by a single path; it’s a journey that unfolds uniquely for each individual.

Clayesmore is a school where every child is known – not just by name, but by nature. Teachers recognise each child’s spark, strengths, and story, and

in that recognition, children experience something transformative: belonging. When a young person feels seen, understood, and valued, something extraordinary happens – they begin to believe, and from that belief comes possibility.

The journey begins in the Prep School, where specialist teaching in art, design, music, languages, and sport helps children explore their gifts and build a foundation not just for learning, but for life.

As students move into the Senior School, the world opens wider. The curriculum challenges and inspires, encouraging each child to shine – whether through science or sculpture, coding or climbing, drama or debate – while building resilience, leadership, and independence.

Boarding is the heart of Clayesmore, a close-knit community where trust, support, and respect guide every moment. It’s a home where friendships flourish, individual strengths are celebrated, and pupils learn the enchantment of caring for others.

By Sixth Form, students stand tall in their own stories. Small class sizes, expert guidance, and a wide choice of A-levels and BTECs give each individual the freedom and support to carve their own path. As one grandparent reflected: “Clayesmore has given our grandchildren an exceptional education, strong values, and the confidence to take on the next stage of their lives.”

When children belong, they believe; and when they believe, they become – scholars, artists, visionaries, leaders – whatever their story is meant to be. If you’re searching for a school that o ers more than results, Clayesmore is ready to welcome you.

LISTEN UP

Peer pressure? It’s anything but as we explore a unique support initiative at St George’s School Windsor Castle

In today’s complex world, between social challenges, academic pressures and personal worries, it’s understandable that some children may start to feel overwhelmed. When this happens, many young people struggle to find someone who they believe truly

understands what they are going through.

At St George’s School Windsor Castle, this is where peer listeners come in – Year 8 student volunteers trained to provide an additional avenue of support to help their classmates navigate life’s ups and downs.

Now in its fourth year, the peer listening programme at St George’s is a vital part of the school’s pastoral care system. It gives students a safe and approachable way to share their thoughts and feelings with someone who can genuinely relate. Unlike teachers or counsellors, both of whom naturally stand ready to provide support in school, peer listeners have similar recent lived experience to their classmates. Talking to someone their own age can therefore feel less intimidating and often makes it easier for children to open up.

Peer listening also helps contribute to the strong sense of community at St George’s, encouraging students to mix between year groups and proactively look out for one another. The initiative complements the school’s existing pastoral framework, ensuring every student has someone they can turn to, while also reinforcing the school’s values of kindness, honesty, and courage.

For the peer listeners themselves, the experience is equally rewarding. For most, altruism is the main motivator. One former St George’s peer listener rather heartwarmingly confirmed: “I like seeing the weight lifted from someone when I can help.” However, peer listeners also receive valuable training. Not only in how to signpost further adult support, but also in key life skills such as active listening. With this year’s volunteers having recently completed a workshop with The Charlie Waller Trust, these skills help them support their peers while also preparing them for life beyond school. All while developing greater emotional intelligence and confidence along the way. To find out more about the school’s award-winning student wellbeing initiatives, from mindfulness and peer listening, to onsite counselling, a dedicated Wellbeing Hub, school dog Olive and access to accredited Youth Mental Health First Aid training for parents, register for a place at the next Open Morning on Friday 20th March 2026.

Hundreds of budding rugby stars descended on the home of Saracens in October for the Defender Rising Stars Cup, in partnership with PREM Rugby. Over 25 grassroots clubs from across the country, including Aylesbury RFC, took part in a day of matches that mixed competition with fun, teamwork and learning.

The annual Under-11s and Under-12s festival is one of a series of nationwide events hosted by PREM Rugby clubs, giving young players the chance to experience a professional environment. For the Under11s, the focus was on rugby’s core values – teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline

and sportsmanship – while the Under-12s competed for the top spot in their age group.

For many of the youngsters, it was their first time stepping out on a professional pitch, cheered on by proud parents and coaches. The weather stayed bright throughout the day as teams showcased their skills, spirit and energy. The festival ended with an awards ceremony where Saracens stars Phil Brantingham, Harvey Beaton and Nathan Michelow handed out medals.

“What a brilliant day,” said Phil Brantingham. “These young players displayed not only great skill and passion, but teamwork and respect. To see these values instilled already fills me with confidence for the future of the sport.”

“It’s brilliant to see so many young players

enjoying themselves. Events like this are exactly how we grow the next generation of talent – full of energy, teamwork and a real love for the game,” added Nathan Michelow.

Since the first Defender Rising Stars Festival in 2008, more than 125,000 children have taken part, with some even going on to play professionally for PREM Rugby clubs. Aylesbury RFC Under-12s player Ryan Neal said: “Rugby really helps me get any anger out and gives me a healthy place to channel my emotions. Plus that feeling of getting a try over the line is amazing!”

Coach Ben Stuart added: “It’s all about togetherness at the end of the day. The boys are so good at welcoming any new people from the moment they join and they really look after each other on the pitch.”

After the final whistle, the young players and their families stayed on to watch Saracens take on Sale Sharks, rounding o an unforgettable day of rugby as the home side claimed a dominant 65-14 victory.

These festivals form part of PREM Rugby’s commitment to developing the game at grassroots level. Defender has supported grassroots rugby in the UK for nearly two decades through the Defender Rising Stars Cup in partnership with PREM Rugby.

The Zaha Hadid Sixth Form building is now o cially open at Berkhamsted School

On 14th October, Berkhamsted Schools Group celebrated the o cial opening of the Zaha Hadid Sixth Form Centre. Named after renowned architect and Old Berkhamstedian Zaha Hadid, this building is purpose-built to foster independence and collaboration, preparing students for life beyond Berkhamsted.

The building was opened by Old Berkhamstedian, mouth artist and inspirational speaker, Henry Fraser. His thought-provoking speech discussed the building’s role in sca olding Sixth success at Berkhamsted and beyond.

He shared: “As much as we enjoy nostalgia, and wish things could always

remain the same, change is inevitable. Thinking about the future can be extremely overwhelming and can feel like it’s a long time away, but it can sneak up on us, and we all need to be ready for it.

“This can be especially true for the Sixth Form students planning their futures beyond these school walls and on to a whole new world. But change can be very overpowering and I’m sure this new building is going to do exactly that, empower and prepare students for life beyond school, in whatever they do next.

“How can a building that is itself forward thinking and planning for its own and our sustainable future, not make anyone who steps inside think the same thing?”

The school also welcomed other guests from the Berkhamsted community,

including Old Berkhamstedian alumni, Governors, representatives from the Berkhamsted Chamber of Commerce, Town Council and major community organisations to celebrate the building’s opening.

This was a wonderful way to recognise the addition of a truly innovative and forward-leading site to the Berkhamsted Schools estate. With its open-plan design, boardroom-style classrooms inspired by the Harkness Model and a dedicated ‘Future Zone’ to host local entrepreneurs, the Zaha Hadid building provides a tailored environment to support students as they transition from Sixth Form to their next endeavours.

VALUE-ADDED

MUSIC

The Association of British Orchestras is highlighting the lifelong value of music education, whatever young people’s future pathway

The Association of British Orchestras (ABO) is highlighting the value of studying music at school – and its positive impact in diverse careers. The aim is to raise awareness of the social and economic impact this has on the UK and its industries.

Linking to its ‘An Orchestra in Every School’ initiative, the ABO is targeting young people choosing GCSE and A-level subjects for the 2026 academic year and beyond. The aim is to emphasise how live music making delivers a diverse skillset and benefits wellbeing and work-life balance.

A recent survey of adults who make music in their leisure time found that transferable skills, including practice and perseverance (89%), focus and concentration (87%), and teamwork and collaboration (85%) proved vital in

respondents’ career paths. The survey, conducted by Making Music in collaboration with the ABO, also revealed that for almost 80% of respondents, music education developed performance and presentation skills transferable to their working life.

Almost half of respondents have used these skills in non-music or nonSTEM professions and over a quarter cite a direct skills benefit in their STEM career. Respondents find music helps with areas such as social skills, physical awareness and proprioception. The most common professions which respondents work in are financial services, medicine, emergency services and religion. More than a fifth work in education. Almost 80% of respondents play in an ensemble, orchestra or band and listen to music at home in their leisure time. Respondents noted how live music helps them balance home and working life. “Live music making in all its forms develops a range

of skills that can be utilised in any career path,” says Sophie Lewis, Chair of the ABO. “There are numerous benefits to having access to live music-making experiences from a young age, whether that is academic achievements, developing confidence, creativity or improvements to mental and physical wellbeing.”

Laura Baxter, Creative Learning Director of Scottish Chamber Orchestra (SCO), says: “Access to high-quality music education, and all the knowledge, joy and connection that brings, opens doors that help children and young people move from school into the world around them and to do so confidently, creatively and in community with others”.

While there has been some growth in the number of GCSE Music entries over the past two years, a lack of school resources across many parts of the state sector means some young people rely on alternate approaches to develop their music-making skills – including online tutorials and self-study.

The ABO and its members pledged to deliver over 1,000 live music-making opportunities this year, with the aim of giving over a million young people the opportunity to experience live music. These activities take the form of workshops, training sessions and live performances.

Castle Hotel WINDSOR

The iconic site is all set to undergo an exciting £9.5 million transformation

Sutton Hotel Collection has announced a £9.5 million refurbishment of The Castle Hotel Windsor, to be completed in 2026. The multi-phase transformation was due to start in November and will see a full refresh of all bedrooms and suites across the hotel.

Starting with the Mews and bedrooms in the original hotel, and concluding with the Park Wing, the refresh will also involve a redesign of the ground floor and the launch of a new British brasserie concept in the restaurant. A significant aspect of the investment includes the team which will be increased and developed to deliver an enhanced guest service.

Set opposite the iconic Windsor Castle, The Castle Hotel Windsor is one of the town’s most treasured landmarks, with a history dating back to 1528. Working with acclaimed interior designers like 3D Reid, the visionaries behind the recent Francis Hotel reimagination in Bath, the refreshed interiors will combine classic elegance with contemporary comfort, creating an environment that celebrates the hotel’s heritage whilst meeting the high expectations of today’s seasoned travellers and business delegates.

Shaun Bowles, Cluster General Manager, says: “This £9.5 million transformation is more than just a renovation – we will be fully repositioning The Castle Hotel within the Windsor market and investing heavily within our brand, our people and our guest journey. We’ll be empowering the team to be imaginative and curate personalised experiences for the guest. We will also be focusing on delivering a first-class British restaurant and elevating our afternoon tea to appeal to the 12 million tourists that visit Windsor every year.”

The Castle Hotel in Windsor is one of the town’s most historic and distinguished places to stay, with origins that trace back several centuries. Its story begins in the early 16th century, when an inn stood on the site serving travellers visiting Windsor Castle. Over time, the inn developed into a respected coaching house, becoming a key stop for stagecoaches journeying between London, Bath, and the West Country. Its prime location near the castle meant it often hosted notable guests, including courtiers, o cials, and those drawn to Windsor for royal ceremonies.

Significant rebuilding took place in the 18th and 19th centuries, giving the hotel the elegant Georgian façade that remains a defining feature today. The coaching era eventually faded with the arrival of the railways, but The Castle Hotel adapted, evolving into a refined hotel known for comfort, fine dining, and a strong connection to Windsor’s royal heritage.

In modern times, it has continued to welcome visitors from across the world, often becoming part of the experience for guests attending Royal Windsor events. Blending heritage with contemporary hospitality, The Castle Hotel remains a landmark of Windsor’s historic charm.
