ABSOLUTELY’S April issue highlights

Iconsider myself to be quite an emotional person. It probably started when I saw E.T as a kid and couldn't stop blubbing. Any thoughts I would toughen up as an adult has not materialised – I was again crying buckets at the end of season two of Channel 4's Big Boys recently (if you haven't seen it, check it out, it's brilliant), but I have only ever once felt tears begin to fall in the theatre watching a play – and that play was War Horse. It is a quite incredible show, so good you forget there are people actually controlling the animals you see on stage. So it was with great excitement that I heard it was back on a UK tour and coming our way, and even more excited when the man behind the original book –Sir Michael Morpurgo – told us all about the inspiration behind it. That's just one element of what is a busy month for Absolutely. We round up the best Easter events, pick out some of the top family destinations for a family getaway, and find time to chat to Tracy-Ann Oberman about another powerful play currently on tour. This Month’s Must See

Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake returns to Milton Keynes Theatre from 15-19 April as part of its 30th anniversary tour. This groundbreaking production of Tchaikovsky's masterpiece caused a sensation when it premiered almost 30 years ago and has since become the most successful dance theatre production of all time. Making their debuts as The Swan/The Stranger are rising New Adventures stars, Harrison Dowzell, Jackson Fisch and Rory Macleod, alongside James Lovell, Leonardo McCorkindale and Stephen Murray as The Prince, Nicole Kabera and Ashley Shaw as The Queen, Katrina Lyndon as The Queen and the Girlfriend, and Bryony Wood as the Girlfriend. Matthew Bourne says: “It’s hard to believe that our Swan Lake is now 30 years old and even harder to acknowledge that we are now casting most Swans and Princesses who were not even born at the time of the show’s premiere! Many dancers have grown up with this production and dreaming of one day dancing in it, so I am particularly excited to announce this line-up of young performers.”

ands-on science is back at the museum with another brilliant exhibition from Science Projects Ltd. This time exhibits explore the science of optics – the way we see things and how light behaves. Have fun experimenting with lenses, mirrors, reflections, lightning and luminosity. Discover eye-boggling and brain-ba ing exhibits, investigate optical illusions and find out how images merge into moving pictures and how your brain influences what you see. discoverbucksmuseum.org

Thrilling, bold, witty and emotive, this genre-defining event is still best known for replacing the female corps-de-ballet with a menacing male ensemble, which shattered convention, turning tradition on its head. First staged at Sadler’s Wells in London in 1995, Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake took the dance theatre world by storm becoming the longest running full-length dance classic in the West End and on Broadway.

HUW WIGGIN IS ON THE BILL

The Merchant of Venice 1936 is such a personal project for her

play

Tracy-Ann Oberman on why
“What has been moving is how many people want to talk at the end”

The women in my family were as tough as nails.” Tracy-Ann Oberman, born just across the county border in Brent, is herself no stranger to tough cookies – she’s a formidable actor on stage and screen. But here she is speaking about her greatgrandmother and aunts, women with nicknames like Machine-Gun Molly and Sarah Portugal. They came to London from antisemitic eastern Europe at the turn of the last century, and despite all odds managed to build a life and make a living.

Tracy-Ann’s family history helped unlock Shakespeare’s enduringly controversial play, The Merchant of Venice. Her relatives survived the Battle of Cable Street in 1936 – a little-known event in London’s East End, when the Jewish community was targeted by the British Union of Fascists, led by Oswald Mosley. Mosley’s blackshirts marched through the area, only to be confounded when the non-Jewish community stood by their Jewish neighbours.

In The Merchant of Venice 1936, Shakespeare’s harsh plot snaps brilliantly into place against this backdrop. Shylock, its anti-hero, is a Jewish moneylender who becomes entangled in the a airs of wealthy non-Jews and su ers terribly for it. In this new version, Oswald Mosley inspires Antonio, the merchant who takes a loan from Shylock and o ers a seemingly fanciful penalty for defaulting: a pound of flesh. And Shylock changes sex, played by Tracy-Ann as a single mother, fiercely committed to her independence and her daughter. “I have one daughter,” she says, “it’s an intense relationship!”

Tracy-Ann is an impressively versatile actor – diamond sharp on stage at the RSC and National Theatre, in comedies like Friday Night Dinner and Toast of London, comedy dramas like After Life filmed in Beaconsfield, and as Dirty Den’s nemesis Chrissie Watts in EastEnders. Yet playing Shylock in TheMerchant of Venice was never

on her radar – growing up, she says, “the play always fascinated and repulsed me”.

Reclaiming the play from a Jewish perspective has proved a transformative experience. It is directed by Brigid Larmour, former artistic director of Watford Palace Theatre: the pair of them have become, says Tracy-Ann, “walking encyclopaedias of this world”. They assembled a strong company of actors and the result is painfully funny, genuinely upsetting –and unexpectedly moving as the events of the play meld with the heightened drama of the Battle of Cable Street.

Having previously sold out in both the West End (twice over) and on tour, the critically acclaimed production is currently on its second UK tour, which finishes this month. “We’ve had lots of people crying and we get standing ovations,” says Tracy-Ann, reflecting on why the show has struck such a chord with spectators. “Whilst they might not have liked my Shylock, they certainly understood why she wants that pound of flesh.”

This production sat in Tracy-Ann’s head for years, as she researched and planned and waited for lockdowns to pass. But now that it has met an audience, what has surprised her? “The thing that surprised me most was the court case,” she considers. “Just how powerful it was to see this woman backed into a corner by all these men, with the palpable hatred and misogyny. It was electric – you could cut the atmosphere in the auditorium with a knife. That was a revelation.”

Playing Shylock as a woman, she insists, isn’t about softening the character – “I didn’t want to make her a victim or change her role in the story” – but, she adds, “maybe I underestimated the impact of a female Shylock. There are a couple of very shocking moments that really upset

audiences. In an early scene Antonio comes to borrow money, and Shylock describes him spitting on her and kicking her like a dog – when that behaviour is directed at a woman, it heightens the antisemitism. I think people also see a woman with her rage and anger. She loses her daughter, her money – she loses everything. And when you tell somebody that they’re a monster for long enough, they become that monster.”

The production vividly summons a febrile moment in British history. “My dream is that the battle of Cable Street will be taught as part of the British civil rights movement,” Tracy-Ann says. “Mosley had been sending his blackshirts down into Cable Street smashing doors, breaking windows, attacking synagogues and people on the streets, putting up the most horrific leaflets straight out of Hitler’s playbook. But my great grandmother always reminded me that their neighbours – their Irish neighbours, the Afro-Caribbean community, the dockers, the working classes – all stood together. That was a beautiful moment.”

It is clearly immersed in history – but does this also feel like a show about the present? Absolutely, Tracy-Ann says. “At a time when we are looking at Britain’s involvement in colonialism and the slave trade, I think we also have to look at Britain’s flirtation with fascism. Oswald Mosley and King Edward VIII, both great friends of Hitler, came close to power – we dodged a bullet. The great message of the play is about the pulling together of all communities – we’re better together, we’re stronger together, especially at times of huge financial and political insecurity.”

Tracy-Ann doesn’t hide how much this project is personal to her – but it seems she’s not alone. “What has been very moving is how many people want to stay and talk at the end,” she says. What kind

of conversations does the play provoke?

“A lot of people talk about their own family’s immigrant experience. Young political people want to talk about the Battle of Cable Street, and people who’d never seen Shakespeare about why they’d found it so accessible.”

Part of the impetus behind The Merchant of Venice 1936 was teachers telling TracyAnn they felt anxious about discussing this contentious play in their classrooms. So the production is accompanied by a prolific strand of education work, alongside the activist group Stand Up to Racism. The team have been into schools and created a pack to support teachers.

It’s still rare to see a woman standing dead centre in a Shakespeare production – though Tracy-Ann tells me, “I can honestly say that when I went into this, it was never with an ego about playing Shylock, it was about wanting to tell the story. I just put my soul into it.”

BACK in the

Inspired by Sir Michael Morpurgo’s best-selling novel, the National Theatre’s acclaimed production of War Horse begins a brand new gallop around the country. Vicky Edwards talks to the award-winning author

SADDLE

"WHAT IF THE HORSE TOLD THE TALE ABOUT THE UNIVERSAL SUFFERING OF WAR?"

Marking 110 years since the start of the First World War, the new tour of War Horse also coincides with the 40th anniversary of the book’s publication. Selling over 35 million copies worldwide, the backstory of Sir Michael Morpurgo’s literary thoroughbred is every bit as captivating.

“I was born in 1943 in London, so I was aware, very early on in my life, what war did to flesh,” says Sir Michael. “A gentleman called Eric Pearce used to come to tea with us. He was a lovely man and I knew that he was a war hero. He had been a Fleet Air Arm pilot. He was very smart, but he had terrible burns on his face, an ear and fingers missing and only one eye. Mother always told me not to stare, but I couldn’t help it. Well, Eric lived to be almost 100 and I kept up with him. On my last visit to him I apologised for staring at him as a child. And he said something rather wonderful: ‘I remember very well indeed. And I liked it. What I never liked was when people looked the other way.’”

Motivated by an interest in military history, Sir Michael went into the army. But while it gave him a real understanding of the power of camaraderie, ultimately he couldn’t square war as being in any way sensible. He left, he says, “on a point of principle”.

Going on to become a teacher a decade later, in 1976, he and his wife Clare relocated to Devon. Setting up Farms for City Children, a charity enabling children from disadvantaged communities to experience the adventure of working together on farms in the countryside, they settled into rural life.

In the local pub, The Duke of York, Iddesleigh, Sir Michael encountered Wilf Ellis. An octogenarian who had served in WWI when he was 17, one day Ellis opened up to Sir Michael. “And Wilf said something that day that was to become life changing for me. He said ‘I was there with horses’. He then spoke about his experiences, including how he had been at the bottom of a mud-filled trench when a German soldier carrying a bayonet approached and yet, for some reason, couldn’t follow through.

“He also told me this: ‘All we had was fear. We each dealt with it however we could; some went silent, some screamed and some went mad. What we couldn’t do was talk to

each other about it.’ But Wilf told his horse things that he couldn’t tell anyone else. The horse was his best friend. And then he said to me something I couldn’t quite believe. He said: ‘And that horse, he listened.’”

Discovering that as many horses as men were killed during WWI, an idea came to Sir Michael: “What if the horse, as a neutral observer, told the tale about the universal su ering of war?”

Aware that this had been done in stories like Black Beauty, but still not entirely convinced, he dithered. Then, one rainy evening on the farm, he spotted a young boy in the yard. A visitor with the Farms for City Children programme, the child, who was non-verbal, was standing by a stable door. About to send him inside, Michael realised that the boy was talking to the horse. “A fellow sentient creature that he trusted, he talked to the horse as a friend. And the horse was listening. It wasn’t sentimental; there was a relationship.”

He started to write War Horse. Encompassing themes including family and community, courage, loss, hope and reconciliation, the remarkable story of a young boy called Albert and his horse Joey is set against the backdrop of WWI.

Published in 1982, the book received critical acclaim, but didn’t sell in any notable numbers. Then, 23 years later, Tom Morris at the National Theatre approached Sir Michael. Morris wanted

to stage a play with an animal puppet at its heart. His mother, having heard Sir Michael talking about the book on Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, believed that War Horse could be the perfect story.

Initially fearful that Joey would be reduced to a pantomime horse, he accepted Morris’s invitation to watch footage of South Africa’s ground-breaking Handspring Puppet Company. “The video was of this extraordinary gira e puppet walking across the studio floor. It was so moving and done so well. I thought if they can do this with a gira e, they can do it with a horse.”

And they did. The most successful play in the history of the National Theatre, beautifully adapted by Nick Sta ord and directed by Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris, War Horse engages audiences of all ages. Powerfully moving, dazzlingly inventive and with stirring music and songs, it has won more than 25 major awards and thrilled 8.3 million people worldwide.

One of the most life-a rming plays you will ever see, the new tour schedule includes a visit to Milton Keynes. “We have had a lot of schools visit the farm from Milton Keynes over the years,” says Sir Michael. “And often they turn up in the audience, which is wonderful.”

War Horse is at MK Theatre from 22 April-3 May. For tickets, visit atgtickets. com/venues/milton-keynes-theatre

ABOUT

One of the hottest stage shows heads to Aylesbury in June and is a must see

An Edinburgh Fringe smash-hit, …Earnest?, arrives at Aylesbury Waterside Theatre this June following rave reviews ahead of an eagerly awaited West End run.

Director Simon Paris says of the production: “This is a completely new play about someone putting on Oscar Wilde’s play. Although there’s a nod towards the Oscar Wilde play, this is a completely new thing entirely.”

When a traditional production of Oscar Wilde’s classic play gets underway, everything seems to be going perfectly to plan… that is, until the lead actor fails to arrive on cue and an actual audience member is chosen to star in the show. What follows is a madcap medley of impromptu

games and spontaneous solutions as the desperate director does his best to keep this faithful production going.

Simon says: “It starts o as a traditional play until the lead actor, Earnest, doesn’t show up... We end up casting a completely random, real audience member. They get into costume, have make up, are given microphones… and they’re literally the star of the show.”

This one-of-a-kind comedy sensation is completely di erent, completely

chaotic, and completely Wilde every single night. Guaranteed to have you laughing whether you’re sitting in the audience – or performing onstage.

Having seen the show over 200 times, Simon explains why he could watch it 200 times more: “Every night feels like opening night. Literally I don’t know what to expect from any of the shows and it makes it so exciting! It’s hilarious, rebellious... timeless.”

Everyone falls in love with Chastleton. It’s a Jacobean treasure that has remained virtually unchanged for 400 years. Children respond to the olde worlde atmosphere and the secret garden feeling outside. They also love the croquet lawns and guessing the inspiration behind the topiary.

CLAYDON

Easter Adventures

Things are looking lively at Claydon with a bunny hop race, egg balancing challenge and giant Easter eggs. Make a wish on the Easter wish tree and spot the felt bunnies in the house.

It’s worth visiting the house at Claydon before heading out on the Easter trail. Children tend to be as wowed by the sumptuous interiors as adults and there’s a handy trail to pick up and follow around the house to engage children. Plus, Florence Nightingale’s quarters are always a fascination for younger visitors. Da odils, hyacinths, snakeshead fritillaries and lily of the valley pepper the lawn with colour.

“THERE ARE KEY INGREDIENTS I LOVE TO CHAMPION”

Q From a chef/ingredients perspective, is it always exciting when spring comes around?

A I do really enjoy spring; it’s always exciting when you get to see so many green herbs, salads and vegetables coming into season. After Christmas, it always feel like the winter has been going on forever and the spring is always a welcome relief.

Weaving TOGETHER

Woven by Adam Smith has been racking up the accolades recently and, for spring, is celebrating with the launch of new menus. The man behind the cooking tells us all

Head chef Adam Smith is certainly a busy man, with plenty happening at his restaurants at Coworth Park. There are new menus in Woven, which follows recent awards success across AA Hospitality Awards (5 Rosettes), Harden’s Top 100 (Woven at no. 4), SquareMeal Top 100 (Woven at no. 5), Good Food Guide Awards (Woven rated Exceptional) and The Michelin Guide (one Michelin Star).

New menus have also just been launched in The Barn, their more casual neighbourhood restaurant, perfect for families, midweek suppers, Sunday lunches and more. Plus, there is a brand new Afternoon Tea launching in early April. We are not sure how he found the time, but Adam tells Absolutely about the joys of the new season.

Q When you sit down to plan a new menu, what exactly goes into it?

A I wouldn’t say there is a formula or set process for how it all happens. We do always start with a base ingredient that we either know is coming into season or that we have been introduced to. After that, anything goes! We live by the rules of, if the team and I like it, want to eat it and believe our guests will find it delicious, we put it on the menu. The process of an idea making it to a finished dish can take anything from hours to months. Many an idea will get scrapped because we don’t think it will ever be good enough, but that is all part of the fun and learning process of being a cook.

Q What can we expect to see on the new menus at Woven?

A There are some key ingredients that I love to champion at this time of year and

ADAM SMITH
ASPARAGUS
LANCASHIRE KOHLRABI, WINDRUSH BLOOD ORANGE, BASIL

into the spring. Yorkshire Rhubarb is one of my favourite ingredients and in the season, January to April every year, we will have it on all the menus here at Coworth Park, for both sweet and savoury dishes. A little later in spring English asparagus, wild garlic, new season lamb, and a huge array of wild herbs and flowers from the kitchen garden and the estate here at Coworth Park will be celebrated across our menus.

Q Are there dishes planned that you are particularly excited to see what the response is like?

A I’m always a mixture of excited and nervous, anxious even, to see the reaction of any new dish that we put on the menu. The guest’s enjoyment is always key. No matter how much we believe in a dish and how hard and long we have worked on it, it’s the guest opinion that counts.

We have been working on a spring lamb dish with BBQ Lions Mane, anchovies and mint. I love it. It tastes fantastic and the texture of the grilled mushroom is amazing! However, I’m conscious that on paper it’s not the most traditional combination of ingredients, so it will be interesting to see how guests respond.

Q Woven has been recognised with a host of awards and accolades recently. What do they mean to you?

A The team and I have had some amazing recognition recently, and it is testament to all their hard work, passion and dedication. It’s extremely flattering that this has been recognised by both our guest and industry peers.

Q Does this success add pressure to deliver every single time?

A We’re an ambitious group of people, our goal when we set out with Woven was to create a true gastronomic destination. We are still on the journey and are extremely motivated to continue the growth and success we have been lucky enough to achieve so far. The biggest pressure comes from ourselves, to be better each day than the day before.

Q What kind of experience do you always look to o er diners at Woven?

A We want all our guests to feel the warmth of real old school hospitality, feel welcomed and have an experience that is personal to us and to them. I want all of our guests to leave feeling like they have had great food and service and wanting to return.

Q The Barn has also just launched new menus. What can we enjoy on them?

A The food philosophy in The Barn is the same as in Woven, we just serve it in a di erent style. The core is we take the best ingredients we can, and cook them with care and attention. The food style is one that is hearty and comforting, The ‘Smithy Chicken Pie’ is a firm favourite on the menu and the Sunday Lunch is fantastic.

Q Is producing menus for The Barn a di erent kind of enjoyment compared to Woven?

A I really enjoy the diversity of creating dishes for di erent restaurant outlets and concepts, it allows me the ability to be creative in di erent ways and the fulfilment is the same when you see people enjoying their time with us. I love the fast pace service in The Barn, it gets me super excited and a massive rush of adrenaline, then coming back for service in Woven it’s the attention

“WE WANT TO CREATE A TRUE GASTRONOMIC DESTINATION”

to detail and refinement of craft. Both very di erent, but the same feelings of fulfilment.

Q What can you tell us about the new Afternoon Tea launching in April?

A What is more quintessentially British than afternoon tea? I believe it’s an o ering that a country house hotel like Coworth Park should o er and do very, very well. I wanted to apply some of the lessons learnt within Woven to our afternoon tea concept, although it will be a totally di erent dining experience, there are some relatable things that can improve our guest experience.

The ability to tell the story of our afternoon concept is something I think our guests will appreciate. We again put the same e ort into the sourcing of the products, the same care and attention into the preparation and the same level of personality into the service, albeit very di erent in style and experience. I live with a drive to constantly improve and grow and I want to create a destination where no matter the reason to visit, our guests can walk away saying that they had an amazing time. This means honesty and constant self-reflection on how we can improve on what already is a great product.

Exploring this Buckinghamshire home that is a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity

Nestled in the heart of Buckinghamshire, Oak House is a striking five-bedroom detached home that masterfully balances traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design. Built in 2006 using a traditional Wealden house frame, the property is a modern interpretation of Tudor architecture, featuring grand proportions and a meticulous attention to detail. With its expansive oak beams, intricate metalwork, and stunning countryside views, Oak House presented an exciting design challenge – one that Claire Garner Design Studio approached with sensitivity, skill, and an innate understanding of how to create a warm, inviting family home.

A HOME WITH CHARACTER AND CHARM

The homeowners, a family of four, purchased Oak House in 2018 after previously living in a nearby rural village. From the moment they stepped inside, they were captivated by the rich warmth of the exposed oak beams and the home’s distinct architectural presence. What particularly appealed to them was the layout – a series of well-defined spaces that allowed for both entertaining and individual retreat, rather than the more conventional open-plan living concept. Initially brought on board to design the master bedroom, Claire Garner Design Studio quickly became an integral part of shaping the entire home’s interior.

A DESIGN APPROACH ROOTED IN AUTHENTICITY

The design brief was simple yet significant: to create a home that felt calming, welcoming, and seamlessly integrated with the house’s existing features. The homeowners placed a strong emphasis on functionality, needing spaces that could cater to their busy family life while maintaining a refined aesthetic. Claire Garner and her team approached the project with a collaborative mindset, working closely with

the homeowners to ensure each design decision complemented their daily routines.

Respecting the house’s original materials was paramount. Rather than overshadowing the stunning oak framework, the design team sought to enhance and uplift these natural elements. This was achieved through a carefully curated palette of warm neutrals, layered textures, and thoughtfully placed lighting.

TRANSFORMING SPACES WITH THOUGHTFUL DETAILS

Among the stand-out transformations was the kitchen, a space that initially felt dark and in need of revitalisation. Rather than undertaking a full remodel, the studio opted for a more sustainable approach, working with the original kitchen manufacturer to update and modify the existing structure. Lighter countertops were introduced to reflect natural light, while additional wall lighting and a shaded pendant over the newly created breakfast nook softened the ambiance. The travertine flooring, rich in texture and history, remained unchanged, allowing the new design elements to work harmoniously with the original materials.

The entrance hall, a breathtaking double-height space with a wraparound landing, was another area where scale and proportion played a critical role. A custom-designed open-metalwork pendant light was introduced, drawing the eye upward and tying together the intricate detailing found throughout the home. Downstairs, the cinema and games room was a completely new addition. Previously an undefined basement space, Claire Garner Design Studio reimagined it as a cosy yet sophisticated retreat. A darker, more dramatic colour palette was chosen to create an intimate atmosphere. Plush seating, soft textiles, and tailored lighting added layers of comfort, making it an inviting haven for family movie nights.

A PALETTE INSPIRED BY NATURE

One of the most compelling aspects of the design is its connection to the surrounding landscape. Inspired by the rolling countryside and lush garden views, the interiors are imbued with a sense of tranquillity. The master bedroom, for instance, incorporates soft green tones that mirror the foliage outside, creating a restful and rejuvenating environment.

The clever use of metalwork further enhances the home’s sense of continuity. Subtle yet deliberate references to the property’s exterior iron detailing appear throughout the interiors, from the handcrafted sideboard in the entrance hall to the elegant lighting fixtures that punctuate each space.

CHALLENGES AND CREATIVE SOLUTIONS

One of the biggest challenges was ensuring that the oak beams remained a focal point without dictating an overly rustic style. The solution lay in striking the right balance between texture, tone, and proportion. Upholstered furniture, soft linen drapes and carefully selected performance fabrics helped to counterbalance the harder materials.

Another key consideration was integrating the homeowners’ existing pieces into the new scheme. A hallway

dresser, for example, was given a fresh lease of life with a coat of paint that aligned with the new colour palette.

A HOME DESIGNED TO EVOLVE

Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of this project was the relationship forged between designer and client. What began as a single-room brief evolved into an ongoing collaboration, with the homeowners repeatedly turning to Claire Garner Design Studio for guidance.

Reflecting on the project, Claire Garner shares her top tip for creating a successful interior scheme: “The key is to be clear on how you want the space to feel and function. Prioritise elements that align with your lifestyle, and take inspiration from artwork or environments that uplift you. Cohesion doesn’t mean uniformity – each room should have its own character while still feeling like part of a greater whole.”

Oak House stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design. Through careful material selection, a subtle approach to colour, and an unwavering focus on how the home should feel, Claire Garner Design Studio has crafted a space that is both timeless and deeply personal.

GO WITH THE FLOW

Ripples on

four

things to think about when designing a shower space

Want to refresh your shower space, but don’t know where to start? With so many styles and options to choose from, it can be hard to know what will work best in your room. Here Morgan Brauer, a designer from Ripples Newbury, talks through the top things to consider when designing a shower space.

GET SAVVY WITH STORAGE

Clever storage is key to a well-designed shower space. Concealed fittings keep your shower looking sleek by hiding pipes within the wall, while built-in alcoves make the most of unused space in stud or false walls, perfect for storing your everyday essentials. Add lighting or a contrasting tile to turn these into a standout design

feature. For a truly luxurious touch, consider an in-built shower bench, o ering both additional storage and a practical seating area for a spa-like feel.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT GLASS

Choosing the right shower glass can transform your bathroom, whether you prefer a fully enclosed shower or a more open feel with a glass screen. Opt for space-saving shapes like pentagonal enclosures or explore on-trend finishes such as Crittall-style, fluted, or etched glass. Complete the look with matching hinges and handles, and for added practicality, choose an easy-clean coating to reduce limescale and make maintenance e ortless.

BE BRAVE WITH BRASSWARE

It’s important to invest in quality brassware for your bathroom because it’s subjected

to a lot of wear and tear. Your shower may be used multiple times a day depending on your household so you will quickly tell if it’s not up to scratch. There are so many beautiful special finishes to choose from nowadays, from rose gold to ‘living finish’, there really is something to suit every style.

GO ECO

Sustainability within bathrooms has never been more important than it is right now and with the cost of living also rising exponentially, it’s important to consider the ways in which you can minimise excess energy and water consumption within the bathroom. One way to reduce water usage is to choose a shower head fitted with a flow restrictor. Luckily, this option doesn’t mean you end up with a substandard shower as each flow restrictor shower has been carefully designed to reduce water consumption, but still o er a pleasurable showering experience. Alternatively, you can opt for a technology-led shower which enriches shower water with air droplets, making for an invigorating shower experience.

COLOUR SENSE

Beata Heuman has launched a new collection of paints with Mylands, and her own home is the perfect showcase for them

BEATA HEUMAN

BEATA HEUMAN'S WORK IS THOUGHTFUL, CREATIVE AND FULL OF NOSTALGIA

Originally from Sweden, Beata Heuman is an interior designer who has been making waves in the design world since founding her own practice in 2013. Her work is thoughtful, creative and full of nostalgia, making her popular with an imaginative audience and establishing “a well-deserved reputation for homes filled with whimsical, personal details” (British Vogue). Beata is a fixture on all major lists of the world’s most talented interior designers with Architectural Digest calling her the “It girl of the AD 100” and Forbes singling her out as “One of the most sought-after interior designers in Britain”. Beata’s approach to colour is instinctive; she is known for just getting it right, so news that she has launched a paint colour collaboration is sparking a lot of interest. She has teamed up with Mylands, the luxury British paint and wood polishes

manufacturer to create The Dependables, a collection of 24 considered, vivid and reliable paint colours. Encapsulating a palette of shades refined over decades of designing interiors, The Dependables are trusted colours you can rely on: versatile light neutrals to cover most walls, mid-tones for shadowy depth in places, darker shades to add edge and contrast, a generous sprinkling of uplifting but calming greens and blues, buttery, irresistible yellows and a sizzling pop of red to add the cherry on the cake.

Beata has long admired Mylands, which has been perfecting the art of fine paints for over 140 years and five generations, an expertise for which it was awarded a Royal Warrant in 1985. Mylands is one of the last remaining manufacturers to still use natural earth pigments in its paints which makes them durable, colour rich and kind to the planet.

Each of the 24 trusted shades has been carefully honed and tested to ensure they work in most settings, in

EACH OF THE 24 SHADES HAS BEEN CAREFULLY HONED AND TESTED

di erent combinations and cohesively as a whole. Though curated and succinct, the collection is versatile and full of possibility. When picking the best paint colours to use at home there is an almost limitless choice available. This collection is designed to be an edited range that is easy to navigate and decorate with, and can be returned to again and again.

On the collection, Beata says: “It has been my dream to do my own paint collection, I am very specific about colour, and I think about it a lot, so it has been thoroughly enjoyable expressing that and now being able to share it with a bigger audience. The team at Mylands are so enthusiastic about paint and colour, and working with Anna Steel, Head of Colour Development,

has been a crucial part of the process. When we found ourselves seven tries down in the sampling process with Cigar, even I was close to giving up! Anna kept pushing and I think that commitment to getting it right really shines through looking at the collection we’ve created.”

Dominic Myland, CEO, Mylands, adds: “From capturing a perfect white in No. 1 Beata White, which I’m sure will be universally loved, to cheering pops of brighter hues, these colours are sophisticated and easy to use. I really appreciate her dedication to developing exactly the right shade with Anna and our team at the factory; it mirrors our own passion for creating beautiful colours that will stand the test of time.”

ELSTREE SCHOOL elstreeschool.org.uk

Q What was your first Headship role and what would you say you learnt from it?

A My first headship role was in 2008 at Ludgrove when I became joint Headmaster with Simon Barber. I learnt many things from it, including how to deal sensitively with moving from being a member of the Common Room to a Head. Also how to work closely with a very good friend; I can’t remember Simon and I ever having a cross word between us. My five years as Headmaster at

Ludgrove taught me so much about dealing with di erent people and stakeholders, whether that was pupils, sta , current, former or prospective parents and Governors. I learnt the importance of taking things into perspective and developing a thicker skin. Also not forgetting to laugh.

Q How long have you been at Elstree School and what attracted you to working there?

A I am in my 12th year as Headmaster at Elstree. I remember it well when going there with sport teams from Ludgrove. The setting was stunning and I always found the pupils to be polite, respectful and good company, with plenty of spark too. There weren’t many schools that I would have left Ludgrove for, but Elstree was one of them.

the independent sector. My vision is to lead a school that successfully celebrates academic rigour and ambition whilst giving children the best possible opportunities in sport, music, art and drama. I want Elstree to be known and loved for being an exciting and inspiring place for pupils to learn, share experiences and build lifelong friendships.

Q What excites you about the remaining months of the academic year?

Absolutely sits down with 15 school leaders to discuss their educational vision

Q What is your vision for the future of your school?

A Working with my wife Olivia, we have built a very close school community, with parents, pupils and sta sharing great loyalty and trust in what we do. I want to see this continue to flourish, particularly bearing in mind the pressures on

A The Summer Term is always a favourite and I love nothing more than spending time away from my desk and seeing children throw themselves into all the fun summer sports and activities. It is always a sad but proud moment when we say goodbye to another cohort of pupils – some of whom have been at Elstree for ten years. We know they will take away many happy memories of their time here. The backdrop of uncertainty in the independent schools sector will be a challenge for many small country Prep schools, but I am proud that Elstree is in good heart and I am excited about seeing our school continue to thrive.

HERRIES SCHOOL

herries.org.uk

Q How long have you been at Herries School?

A I’ve been at Herries for five years now. What initially attracted me was the school’s strong reputation for excellent pastoral care, coupled with the challenge and aspiration for academic achievement. During my interview, I was impressed by the vibrant and dedicated sta but mostly the children’s enthusiasm for learning. I also felt a strong connection to the school’s values of Happiness, Enthusiasm, Respect, Resilience, Independence, Excellence and Sincerity. The whole school community lives these values on a daily basis.

Q What is your vision for the school?

A I want every child to reach their full potential. To create a learning environment that is innovative, engaging and prepares children for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century. I envision a school where students are not only academically successful but also develop strong character, resilience and a lifelong love of learning. I want to strengthen our community connections and create a school that is truly part of the local community.

Q What excites you about the rest of the academic year?

A I’m particularly excited about the end-of-year celebrations which include productions, leavers’ celebrations, Sports Day and a number of residential trips. We’ve been working hard on developing our curriculum and I’m eager to see the positive impact on our children. I’m also looking forward to celebrating the achievements of our students and sta and to reflecting on the progress we’ve made throughout the year.

PANGBOURNE COLLEGE

pangbourne.com

Q How long have you been at Pangbourne College?

A I became Head of Pangbourne College in September 2024. Pangbourne’s focus on a holistic education, with the individual sitting within a supportive community, speaks to me both as a Head and as a parent. Pangbourne’s focus on character, on sport, on adventure, on service speaks to me; these are all crucial aspects of an education, but are often missing or unachievable in the maintained sector. As a believer in the value of plenty of sporting activity, the countryside and facilities here are ideal. Pangbourne is my dream school.

Q How would you describe your leadership style?

A I don’t believe I have a particular style and I am sure that if I tried to describe it I would disagree with it! I try to be adaptive and authentic. As long as I am staying true to my values and putting the students at the centre of my decision making, I will adopt whatever style will get the work done and give the students the very best experience.

Q What is your vision for the school?

A Our vision is to provide an academic education alongside an ethos of adventure; supporting our young

people to acquire the knowledge, skills, and character to become kind, confident, and articulate adults ready to leave a positive mark on a changing world. The fundamental essence of Pangbourne is giving every child a broad spectrum of experience that will prepare them for the modern world. We want them to leave the school as rounded individuals who know that success comes from failure and are not afraid to fail. Our school’s naval traditions and outdoor focus gives us a ready made ethos that is hard to engineer from scratch. Essentially, the experiences that children have here equip them to deal with an uncertain and unpredictable future and thrive in a fast-paced world.

Q What excites you about the rest of the academic year?

A The big things happening at present are the launch of Phase 1 of our Campus 2030 project. This is a threephase project to enhance the academic and pastoral spaces in the College and ensure we continue to provide the very best experience for our students. Getting everything in place for September is my current focus.

HORRIS HILL SCHOOL horrishill.com

Q What was your first Headship role and what would you say you learnt from it?

A My first Headship was at a school in Switzerland, where I shared responsibility with another Co-Directrice. There I learnt the importance of clear and transparent communication with pupils, parents and sta . More importantly, I learnt that there is no substitute for a genuine love of what you do. It is not just a job; it is a life that you take on. Luckily, I love every day.

Q How long have you been at your current school and what attracted you to working there?

A I have worked at Horris Hill School since January 2025, and from the moment I met our pupils – bright, caring and full of joy – I knew it was the right fit. The strong community bonds and sense of family were immediately palpable, and the school has become part of my family and my life in ways I couldn’t have imagined.

Q How would you describe your leadership style?

A I believe in authentic and transparent leadership – what you see

is what you get! My job is to remove barriers and to allow my superb sta to have the freedom and resources to deliver excellence every day. Pupil voice is important and I want to ensure that every child feels heard and can see the outcomes from their feedback.

Q What is your vision for the future of your school?

A We will continue to prepare girls and boys for the best independent senior schools. We will also be delivering our own top-quality programme to GCSE from September 2026, when our first Year 9 cohort begins. Education should be joyous. When pupils feel happy and comfortable, the learning flows. Maintaining the strong sense of family, broadening cultural and educational horizons and ensuring that every child feels safe and happy are at the heart of the vision.

Q What excites you about the remaining months of the academic year?

A I’m excited to celebrate the destinations of our Year 8 cohort to schools like Harrow, Winchester, Radley, Marlborough, Oundle and many other top UK independents. I am also excited to see our school site in full bloom, long summer evenings hearing the children playing in the grounds, and the co-ed cricket season. Beyond, I am looking forward to welcoming our new Reception children in September.

LEIGHTON PARK SCHOOL leightonpark.com

Q What was your first Headship role and what would you say you learnt from it?

A The Headship at Leighton Park will be my first, so I’m in the position of estimating, from my existing experience, what it might be like. I am fortunate that Matthew Judd, the current Head at Leighton Park, has been appointed to the role at Christ’s Hospital, where I am currently Deputy Head, so we will have plenty of opportunities to discuss and support each other. I have also met the leadership team and Governors at the school, and they form a strong and supportive team, with whom I’m looking forward to working. In my current role, I’ve absorbed a great deal about sta development, change management and in recent years, larger scale strategic projects. I have also learned to step back more e ectively from the day-to-day to gain a better overview of the school and its needs; I am hoping that this will stand me in good stead for starting at Leighton Park.

Q How would you describe your leadership style?

A Leighton Park’s Quaker values underpin all that the school achieves and I hope that my leadership style will support them. The key principles of simplicity, integrity, equality, respect, truth and sustainability are central to student (current and OL), sta and parent experience, with the recent ISI inspection identifying the school’s values-led approach as a ‘Significant Strength’. In strengthening these values, there are three words that probably best encapsulate my own leadership thinking: positivity, collaboration and engagement. There is much to unpack in this compact trio and I believe all successful leadership qualities can be traced back to them in some way.

Q What is your vision for the future of your school?

A Leighton Park has been hugely successful in recent years,

HELEN WILKINSON

winning Senior School of the Year last year in the Independent Schools’ Association Awards, and was also given the award for Future Readiness in this one. These are superb foundations on which to build. As the school is settled and doing well, I will work collaboratively and carefully to ensure that this continues. I am fortunate to have time to consider what might and might not work, and I will be discussing it with the Governors, Leadership Team, sta , OLs, students and parents to gain the best all-round perspective before taking any major decisions.

WOOD SCHOOL

akeleywoodschool.co.uk

Q How long have you been at Akeley Wood School?

A I have been at Akeley Wood School since September 2023. The role at Akeley Wood was the initial attraction; I am always looking to challenge and develop myself and after 14 years in Headship, across 2 very di erent schools, I was ready for a new challenge. The challenge that Akeley posed and what attracted me the most was the 12 months to 18 age range across 3 di erent sites, having led a 3 site school previously. Of course, I cannot deny that the settings of the Akeley Wood Schools weren't a factor – our sites and buildings are stunning. The role and setting were enough to relocate myself, my 7 and 11 year old from the Surrey/South London border to rural Buckinghamshire.

Q How would you describe your leadership style?

A I am a really driven person, with high standards and expectations, but I also understand that context is everything and that my way is not the only way. I feel that I am open and approachable, but that I am a good listener; I am honest and direct in a way that stays true to the direction we are heading in. I am a doer/solver and my first instinct will always be to jump in and help/o er advice, but I have learnt over the years that stepping back,

questioning and supporting individuals to reflect and find their own solution builds independence, confidence and greater capacity moving forward. Essentially, I feel my leadership style is to stay true to what I believe in and the direction we are going in, while supporting others to be very best versions of themselves, therefore better supporting and delivering the outcomes we are looking for.

Q What is your vision for school?

A I want Akeley Wood School to be known as a school where students can discover, grow and achieve highly; where they have an educational experience while with us that they enjoy, that motivates them, aspires and supports them to excel and provides them with amazing memories to take forward.

Q What excites you about the rest of the academic year?

A We have an exciting few months ahead, from our Scholar Days and Junior School fiestas, where families engage in their child's learning, to the Senior School House Olympics and Colour Run – complete with goat yoga! Students are preparing for key transitions, from nursery to 'big school' and Junior to Senior, as well as GCSEs and A-levels, supported by targeted revision and mentoring. Beyond the classroom, a wide range of trips and residentials will enrich learning. With summer performances, sports fixtures and academic challenges ahead, it is a time of energy, growth and achievement.

WELLINGTON COLLEGE wellingtoncollege.org.uk

Q What first attracted you to Wellington, and how have you seen the school change since you arrived?

A The 400-acre campus is stunning; the way in which Wellington fuses its remarkable history with pioneering educational thinking is unique; the ubiquitous culture of ambition and aspiration is very special; but it is the people who make any institution, and we are blessed to have incredible sta , governors, parents and pupils. All these elements have gone from strength to strength over the 12 years I have been at the College.

Q With Wellington reaching a milestone in co-education, what do you think makes the school’s approach to co-ed special?

A We are so proud that September will see the College fully co-educational in every way: 50/50 boys and girls, but also 50/50 teaching sta and Governors. What is so special is the way that this enables outdated gender stereotypes to be dismantled on a daily basis. We have more girls studying STEM in the Sixth Form than the average for all-girls’ schools; some of our best dancers currently are boys; and our best footballer in the 1st XI is a girl.

Q What were some of the standout moments for you and the College in 2024?

A Best ever GCSE results (38% grade 9s) and A-level results (31.5% A*), with 30 students heading o to Oxford, Cambridge and Ivy League universities. Sports teams reaching national finals in rugby, hockey, netball, rackets, skiing, and golf. And the school musical, Les Misérables, was breathtaking and – quite rightly – award-winning.

Q Looking ahead to 2025, what new things are you excited about?

A We are so excited to mark the 50th anniversary of co-education and have lots planned: a specially commissioned film to tell the story; an OW reunion celebrating the opening of a pioneering women’s trail at the College to mark the contribution of pupils and sta who blazed the co-educational trail; a series of themed Arts events, concerts and productions; finishing with Speech Day in May 2026. Our newly opened co-educational Sixth Form community, Elizabeth House, will also become fully operational. I am really looking forward to developing the next strategic plan to take us to 2030, which will include ever-closer partnerships with our own Prep School as well as our ever-growing international family of schools.

THE MARIST SCHOOL themarist.com

Q How long have you been at The Marist School?

A I have been at The Marist since 2019, and it is my first Headship. Here, there is a focus of learning and the sheer joy of learning and a curiosity for learning. It is an environment where girls can be themselves yet can be aspirational and ambitious too. There are no stereotypes at The Marist, and this is illustrated in the choice of subjects at university from the outgoing Year 13 students with STEM featuring highly: Veterinary Medicine at Cambridge; Physics at St Andrews and Economics at Bath, to name a few. Boys are not out of the picture, we enjoy mixing in a co-ed environment, just not in the classroom and in our day-to-day learning. Girls in all year groups mix with boys in social settings and, in the case of VI Form, for various workshops and leadership opportunities where we host students from all schools, co-ed or single sex.

Q What is your vision for the school?

A My vision is to be the first-choice girls’ school in the area. A school where you can achieve excellence in examinations while maintaining a high level of wellbeing. Where you can fully realise the opportunities to develop your skills of

leadership, problem-solving, critical thinking and communication to gain your first choice, high-ranking university. We have plans to develop STEM further, to create a community hub for parents and to maximise the use of our site, thereby creating a learning environment to enable our students to reach for the stars. We have a new and exciting, innovative curriculum to help create future global citizens for September 2025.

Q What excites you about the rest of the academic year?

A For Year 11 and Year 13 students, the remaining months of the year are focussed on maximising their learning and exam skills ready for GCSE and A-level examinations. We have almost 50 revision classes for our exam students happening over Easter thanks to a very dedicated group of teaching sta . For the rest of the school, learning continues in all its guises – photography in the woodland, enrichment and the finalising of The Marist Diploma. Activity Week is coming up soon where we will see students of all ages engaging in activities outside of their comfort zone from laser tag and bushcraft in our own woods, to leisure pool and our own netball world cup. We will see some of our oldest students head to Borneo on a World Challenge expedition where they will have experiences beyond their imagination. I am most excited about meeting the new pupils and their families who will join our school in the new academic year, while also preparing our eldest students for their life beyond school.

Nick Baker

Q How long have you been at The Beacon School and what attracted you to working there?

A I have been at The Beacon since September 2022. I grew up in Amersham, so know the area and school very well. I used to come here to play fixtures as a boy and remember that even though I don’t think I was ever on the winning side, the after match teas were always amazing. I was at Dr Challoner’s with many old Beacon boys who are still my friends to this day. Good humoured, interesting, imaginative and genuinely decent individuals were traits that I would associate with boys from the school in the 1980s/90s and the same is very much true to this day.

Q How would you describe your leadership style?

A I’m probably the wrong person to ask, but I’d like to think that I’m definitely not the stereotypical authoritarian and disciplinarian of yesteryear – you don’t need to be to get good order and a culture of mutual respect in a school community. As a father of two (much older now) boys, I always

think first and foremost, would this be an environment in which Patrick and Joseph would thrive? Would they benefit from the opportunities here? Would their confidence grow and characters develop in this school environment? And then as a parent, are we communicating with our parents in the way that as a parent, I would expect to be communicated with. If we keep to and surpass those expectations, we won’t be doing too much wrong.

Q What is your vision for the future of your school?

A The Beacon is an amazing school with a richly deserved reputation but ‘better never stops’ and we should always consider ourselves ‘in development’ as we move with the times. We have a super site here but there are a number of buildings that we could re-purpose as we look to enhance the boys’ experience yet further. Independent schools get a bad press sometimes, but I would like The Beacon to be a hub for community events in Amersham and Chesham Bois and be looked upon as an institution that the whole town is proud to have in its community. We recently hosted an event with Amersham Big Band in our theatre, local groups use our swimming pool and sports facilities, but I feel we could do even more.

THORNGROVE SCHOOL thorngroveschool.co.uk

Q What was your first Headship role and what would you say you learnt from it?

A Thorngrove is actually my first Headship, I was Deputy Head here for 5 years before taking over the Headship in September 2022. Everyday is a new learning experience and it is always exciting.

Q What attracted you to working at Thorngrove originally?

A Thorngrove is a community where pupils are kind, confident and grounded. It encourages pupils to discover their passions, whatever they may be, and the ability for every individual to feel valued, whilst building positive relationships with those around them is something I am always impressed by and incredibly proud of.

Q How would you describe your leadership style?

A We have a wonderful sta body here at Thorngrove and their passion for the pupils comes through in everything that they

do. For me, leadership is about encouraging people to maximise their potential and supporting their ambitions. I would say that I am approachable and supportive to everyone in the community.

Q What is your vision for the future of your school?

A To continue to spread the good word about the school and its o erings. We are proud to focus on four main aims for the pupils: Be Curious, Be Creative, Be Community minded and Be Challenged. These are instilled in much of what we do here and we will look to ensure that pupils are always provided with these opportunities.

Q What excites you about the remaining months of the academic year?

A Our Open Morning on 17th May is always a personal highlight of mine as we get to show prospective families what Thorngrove has to o er. Alongside this, we have a wonderful school production at the end of the summer involving all children in Years 6 to 8, and I always relish the chance to spend time with our Year 8 leavers before they move on to their senior schools.

WELLINGTON COLLEGE PREP wellingtoncollegeprep.org.uk

Q How long have you been at Wellington College Prep and what attracted you to working there?

A I have been here almost two years now. I have been a pupil, teacher and parent at Wellington College and so working at Wellington College Prep was the next natural move!

Q How would you describe your leadership style?

A I would say that I am a very open leader. I tend to wear my heart on my sleeve and love talking to anyone about the strategy and the day-to-day operation of the school. I love to be visible around the school as much as possible and my metaphorical door is always open, and I love the fact that sta and parents feel they can come to see me for a quick chat whenever they want. I also love coaching sta , either to help them with their vision for their area or just to help them find answers to something that is challenging them at the moment.

Q What is your vision for the future of your school?

A My vision is for us to be the most modern Prep school in the country, ensuring our children are prepared to be the very best students at their next schools at a time when knowing yourself and being comfortable in your own skin is more important than ever. We aim to connect academic attainment with pastoral wellbeing and character development, and we will

NICK GRAHAM

share information on all these areas with parents, thus working closely with them in their child's growth journey.

Q What excites you about the remaining months of the academic year?

A As the sun comes out, Wellington College Prep comes into its own. I am looking forward to judging the quality of dens constructed in the woods at break time, using our outdoor classroom, watching girls' and boys' cricket matches and then watching the boarders relaxing in the grounds after dinner. I am also accompanying a number of our pupils on a trip to visit two of the Wellington Colleges in China, which will be an amazing experience.

Q What makes your school di erent?

A We are a school that is small enough so that every teacher knows every child, but big enough (and we get bigger as the children get older) to allow the crucial introduction of more challenge and competition as the children get older. They are also able to be top of the school when they are in Year 8 and so don't get negatively influenced by the constant presence of older teenagers. We are a Prep school that can punch well above its weight by virtue of being connected with, and right next door to, a modern and innovative senior school with world-class facilities. Finally, we are fully active in the way we look after the children with a constant focus on helping them to discover who they are in these crucial years so that they can properly flourish in their next schools.

ST GEORGE’S SCHOOL

WINDSOR CASTLE stgwindsor.org

Q How long have you been at St George's School Windsor Castle and what attracted you to working there?

A I joined St George’s as Head in September 2024, following seven years as Head at Junior King’s in Canterbury. St George’s is a unique gem of a school and its warm ethos and values of Kindness, Honesty and Courage attracted me straight away. The school’s future-focused International Baccalaureate curriculum was also a significant factor, as was the iconic location and history. I love the juxtaposition of being one of the oldest prep schools in the country and one of the most intellectually forward-looking – it’s the best experience possible for our students.

Q Has anything surprised you about the school?

A When I came for the interview, the first thing that completely took me aback were the school grounds. Behind a relatively modest entrance, I discovered not only a swimming pool but also some incredible outdoor space, around 12 acres in total, which is extremely rare for a school which has the advantage of being right in the heart of town. Having our beautiful playing fields in the private

“ST GEORGE'S IS ALREADY VERY WELL PLACED TO SERVE THE NEEDS OF OUR YOUNG PEOPLE”

grounds of Windsor Castle and St George’s Chapel as the venue for our assemblies and school concerts is an extraordinary privilege.

Q What is your vision for the future of your school?

A In all the schools I have worked at I have always advocated for precisely what we do at St George’s: embrace the new, while preserving the best of the old. The shift towards a skills-based education has many advantages, providing children with a real engagement with and understanding of the world around them. With our pioneering IB curriculum, a deeply ingrained focus on student wellbeing, and an enormous breadth of opportunity across performing arts, sport, art and design, St George’s is already extremely well placed to serve the needs of our young people. My job is to ensure it remains so, and our students continue to leave us Real World Ready, for many generations to come.

Q What was your first Headship role and what would you say you learnt from it?

A Ludgrove 2008 – ‘expect the unexpected’ and I am still learning…

Q How long have you been at Ludgrove and what attracted you to working there?

A Since 2002, it is a brilliant place to work, a traditional 21st century school where happy boys are full of life and purpose.

Q How would you describe your leadership style?

A Lead by example and encourage everyone to be the best they can – there’s no place for apathy.

Q What is your vision for the future of your school?

A To nurture the character, confidence and creativity of every child enabling them to be the best version of themselves. If they can look after themselves, look after

others and think for themselves they will be in good shape to navigate whatever the future might bring.

Q Looking a little closer to the present, what excites you about the remaining months of the academic year?

A The Summer Term, seeing the boys thriving both in and outside of the classroom – our Top Year heading o to distinguished senior schools having done themselves proud in their exams, the cricket season, athletics, tennis, dramatic productions, music concerts, Creative Arts exhibition, school trips both in the UK and France... the list goes on and on as there is so much in the calendar. A I’ve been part of this incredible school community for over 15 years! I started o as Head of Music before taking on roles such as Director of Studies and Deputy Head, before becoming Head in 2022. Everyone who visits the school always comments on the happy, friendly atmosphere we create here. The unique family feel is what made me want to join the school in the first place. I love that our school is inclusive and diverse, and that we celebrate everyone’s strengths whether it be academic, sporting or in the Arts.

Q How would you describe your leadership style?

A I have been described as an authentic leader with a leadership style that is visible, hands-on, and collaborative. I pride myself on knowing every single one of our pupils and for me it is incredibly important that I greet students every morning, cover lessons when needed, and actively engage with sta , parents, and pupils fostering a real sense of community. I believe that a prep education should be an inclusive and holistic experience where children can be children. As a Head there is nothing better than watching the journey of a Reception child growing in confidence and eventually developing into an independent and compassionate Year 6 student, ready to take on the world.

Q What is your vision for the future of your school?

A My vision for our school is rooted in

JANINE BULL
SIMON BARBER
“A PREP EDUCATION SHOULD BE AN INCLUSIVE AND HOLISTIC EXPERIENCE”

the belief that every child deserves to be known as an individual, supported in reaching their full potential and equipped to navigate a future we can only begin to imagine. This means ensuring they are digitally literate, embracing AI, and equipped with the skills to adapt in an ever-changing world. However, technology is only one part of the equation. We must also teach our children about sustainability, philanthropy, and climate change and that is why we have developed our Education for Social Responsibility curriculum which empowers them to be globally aware. At the end of the day, they will be the ones who will drive positive change. I’m also particularly proud of our "Dair to Go Wild" Forest School initiative, which plays a significant role in the holistic development of our children. Outdoor education is vital in nurturing character skills like leadership, collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving. Ultimately, my goal is to ensure that every child in our care feels happy, safe, and ready to achieve their personal best.

CALDICOTT SCHOOL caldicott.com

Q What was your first Headship role and what would you say you learnt from it?

A After a 10-year career at Dulwich Prep, I moved to Beachborough School in 2006 and gained my first Headship there in 2013. With senior leadership experience in both London day schools and country preps, I learned a lot about the aspirations and expectations of all kinds of families.

Q How long have you been at Caldicott and what attracted you to working there?

A A Headship at Caldicott was always going to be an aspirational role, and it has been an enormous privilege, since I joined in 2018, to oversee a number of strategic changes here that honour the history and legacy of the school, while developing boys for life in the 21st Century with a clever blend of academic rigour, breadth of opportunity and fun.

Q How would you describe your leadership style?

A My leadership style echoes the high expectations I have for the boys. I aspire to model a culture of positivity, ambition and excellence, imbued with our school values of perseverance,

integrity, courage, compassion and a healthy sense of humour.

Q What is your vision for the future of your school?

A In fast-changing times, Caldicott must answer the evolving needs of its pupils without losing sight of the core strengths that give the school its dynamic spirit; where boys, at this important stage of their development, are nurtured to become problem solvers and critical thinkers. They should be eager to play their part in the community and to help address society’s collective challenges. They have the values to guide them, the determination to persevere, and the capacity to lead but, crucially, they will also know how to apply those qualities in today’s world.

Q What excites you about the remaining months of the academic year?

A Who doesn’t love Summer Term in a prep school? Cricket and athletics in the sunshine, teachers who say ‘let’s take this lesson outside’, the nervousness of exams, followed by the relief of knowing you’ve tried your best. This is where boys make core memories that shape them for life.

Q How would you describe a typical school day to prospective parents?

WTaking a closer look at how St George’s School Windsor Castle celebrated World Book Day

ith over 7,230 books across the main school library and Senior Prep common room, as well as a dedicated selection of books for children in the Pre-Prep, developing a love of reading is deeply ingrained into life year-round at St George’s School Windsor Castle. In addition to literacy lessons, phonics in the younger years and free access to the library at breaks and lunchtime, a dedicated 30-minute slot is timetabled each week for free reading, when children can enjoy immersing themselves in a book of their choice.

As passionate advocates for the written word, it comes as no surprise that every year the school fully embraces World Book Day. Not only do those who wish to – both sta and students – come to school dressed as a book character of their choice, during a day of celebration, the children at St George’s have the opportunity to take part in engaging workshops with visiting best-selling authors.

This year, the school welcomed two highly-acclaimed writers, Peter Bunzl and Chloë Inkpen. Peter, animator, and author of immersive fantasy adventure books including Cogheart, Moonlocket and Dragonracers, ran workshops with students in Years 4, 5 and 6. During each session, he spoke about the inspiration behind his latest book, Glassborn, read an extract from the book to the students and then taught the children how to make their own simple animations, using just a pencil, single piece of paper and their imagination!

Chloë, author of best-selling books Mrs Blackhat and Hole in the Zoo, used her workshops to transfix the school’s Pre-Prep children. The highly interactive and energetic sessions saw the children enthusiastically acting out one of Chloë’s books, joining in with actions and sounds as each story unfolded. In addition to following

along, they were encouraged to guess how the plot might progress and suggest alternative endings and characters.

Chloë also used her skills as an illustrator to create new characters collaboratively with the children. In one example, she even demonstrated the benefits of resilience, perseverance and resourcefulness. By turning a scribble into a spider, she deliberately showed how a drawing ‘gone wrong’ could be transformed into something magical.

Actively engaging students in the power of storytelling helps spark their creativity and promote self-expression. Two skills which will undoubtedly characterise the change-makers of the future. Given the school’s Real World Ready ethos, World Book Day is therefore sure to remain a firm fixture on the St George’s calendar.

How to nurture a strong sense of global citizenship in school

Teaching global citizenship in our schools today is about fostering connection and responsibility amongst students as inhabitants of an increasingly globalised world. But in practice, what does educating young people as global citizens mean and how can schools provide an impactful global education today that resonates?

Ensuring that our young people have a strong respect for, and an understanding of other cultures, is imperative. Likewise, we want to equip students with the foundation stones to develop a tangible sense of shared responsibility for the world around them.

With this in mind, we need to prepare our students for an ever-evolving interconnected, multi-cultural world beyond the classroom. Equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge to recognise and appreciate diverse perspectives, while helping them to promote cross-cultural understanding, will emphasise their responsibility as global citizens. Although, to be truly e ective, a global education needs to permeate all aspects of school life. Through the school curriculum, we need to ensure that diverse perspectives are fairly represented. This means exploring world history and politics, as well as developing knowledge of world religions, global literature, music and arts. In our quest to learn, the examples we draw upon should

also come from a variety of countries; there are many inspirational scientists from across the world for example, so having access to a multitude of sources will give students a more rounded view.

THINKING BEYOND NATIONAL INTERESTS

It is also important throughout the curriculum to demonstrate the interconnectedness of the world itself. Our economies, for instance, are all inextricably linked; solutions for global warming and climate change will require a global solution so students will need to think beyond national interests. The wealth of information available via the internet and world media sources

IT IS IMPORTANT WE ENGAGE IN DISCUSSIONS WITH YOUNG PEOPLE ABOUT WORLD ISSUES, BUT ALLOW A

RANGE

OF VOICES TO BE HEARD

requires young people to be able to analyse commentary and information about global issues critically, thinking carefully about biases and being able to identify misinformation or fake news.

Through the co-curricular o ering, schools can also provide students with various opportunities to recognise the impact that they as individuals and groups can have on the world and people around them. For example, if we want a more just world, we have to be prepared to consider our own actions and values and ensure respect and support for equity, diversity and inclusion. Promoting these aspects, as well as human rights for all, can be achieved through active engagement in, for example, the MUN (Model United Nations), debating sessions and opportunities to hear from expert speakers in this field to help build meaningful links across the globe.

At our school we also run a Global Schools’ Exchange Programme where students in Year 10 and 12 can spend time at one of 18 di erent schools across the world gaining firsthand experience of other cultures while boosting their understanding and international friendships.

A FRAMEWORK FOR EXPLORATION

At the risk of stating the obvious, in 2025 our schools (and communities) will be fortunate to have a diverse pupil and sta body. Inviting and encouraging all members

of our community to share something of their culture is a wonderful way of fostering inclusion and sharing knowledge. In a boarding school, this is especially true with children coming from all over the world to enjoy a British education. The world is quite literally their second home. Encouraging pupils to take on responsibility for promoting international awareness and cultural diversity is very powerful, as is giving them a safe space to discuss contentious issues within a group setting where respect and empathy provide the framework for exploration.

Digital platforms and technology have also enabled schools and students across the world to connect without having to leave their community. This is an avenue that all schools should explore for their pupils and, of course, sta will benefit greatly from enhancing their understanding of the world.

Seeking out and providing such opportunities are to everyone’s benefit, but what responsibilities do we have as teachers and parents, and how can we ensure that a global education empowers our young people? Parents and teachers are responsible for promoting and modelling the values and skills that enable young people to become kind, courageous and tolerant leaders. We need to demonstrate kindness and empathy in our daily interactions, display and foster curiosity about the world around us, as well as show courage by standing

up for what is right. This means making decisions that are both fair and ethical.

A SENSE OF SERVICE

Likewise, it is important that we engage in discussions with young people about complex world issues, but allow a range of views and voices to be heard. We must listen carefully and challenge constructively. Ensuring that young people have the knowledge to be able to understand why a fairer world for everyone will be of benefit to them and to understand the value for themselves, will help to drive positive behaviours.

Creating a wide variety of opportunities throughout school and home life will reap rewards. Contributing to the local community and world beyond school will also enable young people to see the positive impact that they can have. Developing a sense of service through community programmes and charity work allows participants to experience first-hand how they can change other’s experiences for the better.

More than ever this year we need globally minded citizens because our world is so deeply interconnected; and the challenges we face from climate change and political conflict to economic variance and fast advancing technology, all require strong ethical, compassionate and skilled leadership. The global citizens we need for the future will think beyond national boundaries, embrace diverse thinking and solve problems collaboratively. They will understand and believe in the benefits of a fairer and more peaceful world while possessing the courage to strive for them.

History brought to life

Berkhamsted School recently invited Michael Scott-Baumann to deliver a talk to Sixth Form students entitled ‘From the Balfour Declaration to Gaza’. Historian, teacher and author of Palestinians and Israelis: A Short History of Conflict (2023), Michael is part of an organisation called ‘The Balfour Project’ which aims to develop students’ critical thinking skills and knowledge of 20th and 21st century Palestine and Israel. The Balfour Project acknowledges Britain’s historic and continuing responsibility in the conflict and works through education and advocacy to advance equal rights for Palestinians and Israelis. In a climate of misinformation, the project encourages the formal teaching of the history of Palestine and Israel in schools. Michael delivered an insightful and accessible presentation detailing the timeline of events from the defeat of the Ottoman Empire up to the present-day conflict, highlighting the legacy of British involvement and contradictory promises towards both Palestinians and Israelis. He then dedicated time to a Q&A, where students asked perceptive questions about the history of the conflict. berkhamsted.com

Animal encounters

Kindergarten children at St George’s School Windsor Castle recently had a ‘hee-haw’some time welcoming Basil & Crew Mobile Farm into school. With a shetland pony, donkey, some very hungry pygmy goats, three-week-old lambs, rabbits, guinea pigs, ducks and chicken, there was no shortage of animals to stroke, feed and observe. Matilda the tortoise, who thoroughly enjoyed having free rein of the school grounds, was a particular favourite! The visit came in the same week as chicks began hatching in the class’s incubator, also causing great excitement. Nine hatched in total, with the children able to follow the chicks’ progress over a period of a week before they moved to their new homes. These experiences were both linked to the children’s exploration of the theme ‘how the world works’. stgwindsor.org

Bright future

Heathfield School, Ascot –an independent secondary boarding and day school for girls aged 11-18, rated ‘Excellent’ across all areas by the Independent Schools Inspectorate – is delighted to announce its merger with the Mill Hill Education Group (MHEG), one of the largest charitable groups of schools in the country, which will formally be completed on 1st September 2025. Commenting on the merger, Sarah Rollings, Headteacher, says: “Becoming part of the Mill Hill Education Group marks an exciting new chapter in the evolution of our exceptional school. While Heathfield’s distinctive ethos and rich traditions remain firmly in place, this partnership opens up enhanced opportunities for our students, families, and staff through the broader MHEG network. Our founder, Eleanor Wyatt, was a visionary educationalist, and I am honoured to be part of this bold and forward-thinking step, benefiting both our school and the wider Heathfield community.” Originally founded in 1807, MHEG has a family of ten schools in the UK, and a total of 3,200 students, with its first overseas school due to open in Thailand in September 2025. Antony Spencer, CEO, MHEG, adds: “Heathfield is clearly a school with a big heart. Large enough to offer an impressive breadth of opportunities, but small enough to foster a deep sense of belonging. The values that underpin the education provided at Heathfield are highly compatible with our other Group schools and I look forward to working with the staff there.”
