ARTS & CULTURE / BOOKS
A Folio book is a unique object, one in which typography, illustration, paper, and printing and binding techniques all play a part in creating a harmonious whole. The Folio Society has celebrated the particular joy to be derived from owning, holding and reading a beautiful printed edition. Our aim is to create books that are unique in their aesthetic and in their quality – this is what makes a Folio collection something to cherish.”

Beautifully printed and bound, many of the Folio Society's hardback volumes feature specially commissioned illustrations. Harnessing this interest, a new exhibition at the V&A celebrates 70 years of the Folio Society. The first title, an illustrated edition of Tales by Tolstoy, is included in the exhibition along with a selection of original artwork from the archive accompanied by the books for which they were commissioned, a selection of materials showing the history of the company and a dedicated reading corner inside the National Art Library where a range of titles can be enjoyed first hand. Artwork by Quentin Blake, Angela Barrett, Charles Keeping, Neil Packer, Anna and Elena Balbusso, Geoff Grandfield and Harry Brockway and many others are included. Folio are regularly awarded for the excellence of their books, most recently being named as finalist for six of their editions in the prestigious British Book Production and Design Awards for 2017. ¿
