ZEN PETROLEUM

Message from the Managing Director
William Tewiah Managing Director
hen we initiated operations, ZEN was faced by the seemingly insurmountable task of establishing a local Oil Marketing Company (OMC) that could venture into and thrive in a sector that was widely dominated by multinationals. We faced that challenge head-on and within 12 years, we have seen consistent growth in the petroleum downstream sector, while maintaining our position as the market leader in the supply of fuel products to the mining sector in Ghana and West Africa. Additionally, we have invested in a rapidly expanding retail network, delivering the highest standard of service to customers who visit our stations across Ghana.
We are committed to the highest safety standards, to zero losses, zero accidents and to delivering value for people and communities.
We remain confident in our resolve to lead the way with clean fuel, to invest in safe, modern infrastructure and to always deliver for clients at the best price, best quality and best quantity.
Already over 10 years of the ZEN Way 2020 was an important milestone for ZEN as it marked the 10th anniversary as a company. For me, this continues to be a surreal, as it seems like only yesterday I was personally escorting tankers to the mines, when many doubted our capacity to succeed in the face of stiff competition. Now in 2022, as a result of the commitment of our over 1,000 results-driven and focused professionals, we have maintained our place as a reliable, safe and valuable partner in the supply of fuels and lubricants. It was also a tremendous honour for the entire organisation to be named one of Africa's fastest-growing companies in 2022 after a very thorough evaluation procedure. ZEN was ranked as the 28th fastest-growing company on the continent out of 79, which is a testament to the professional services we consistently provide as a business.
Together, we have proven that it is possible to build a local company that meets global standards and achieves global recognition. I look forward to another 10 years, as we grow into a bigger and even more efficient operation, upholding our shared values of Safety, Honour, Agility, Respect for the individual, Empowerment and Delivery.

We are committed to the highest safety standards, to zero losses, zero accidents and to delivering value for people and communities.

Service Profile
Ladybird Logistics is an all-ladydrivers’ logistics company operating from Takoradi in Ghana. Since its establishment, the company has become internationally recognised for standards set in promoting local ownership and accountability, in line with its goals to:

• Operate a state-of-the-art fleet in terms of performance, safety and environmental impact, with a focus on aluminium as opposed to steel bulks
• Exclusively employ and empower women drivers

• Enable women venture into the maledominated industrial logistics sector
Ladybird was born out of a desire to make a difference through diversity and inclusion, in an ecosystem where trucking is considered too difficult for women, coupled with frustrations from dealing with an erratic and unreliable system. What started as a “radical” idea with 11 trailblazing women on 15th October 2018, has grown into a thriving business employing over 70 staff with 45 women drivers. As the only company exclusively employing women truck drivers, Ladybird seeks to empower, equip and inspire women everywhere to thrive in maledominated industry.
With media features from CNN, BBC Africa, France24 amongst others, Ladybird has made a concerted effort towards reforming the narrative around what a woman is supposed to do and what she is capable of. At the heart of Ladybird’s corporate ethos is the belief that, women empowered and equipped with opportunity, can bring transformational change to society.
Ladybird takes pride in its record of safely transporting fuel and other products to customers on time and in full, with zero loss. With a focus on improving road transport safety, Ladybird has put in place required measures and resources to raise the safety

Ladybird has made a concerted effort to change the narrative around what a woman is supposed to do.
The Global Transportation Leadership Award
Last year, Ladybird Logistics was named among recipients of the 2019 “Top Woman-Owned Businesses in Transportation”. The prestigious award was announced by the Women In Trucking Association (WIT) through its official magazine, the ‘Redefining the Road magazine’.
The WIT global list of women-led companies was created to recognise women in leadership and encourage more women to become proactive leaders in their organisations – and even start their own trucking businesses, WIT president and CEO Ellen Voie explained.
Ladybird Logistics scales operations with 36 drivers
Since commencing operations in 2018, Ladybird logistics has set the pace in providing the best quality service with its first-of-a-kind model of recruiting a full team of women drivers. The company has now grown to 45 professional, vibrant and high-skilled drivers, with 14 in training.

standards of bulk road vehicles (BRVs), and to improve the safety attitudes of drivers.
To be consistently effective, Ladybird identifies the right talent, with significant investment in training towards equipping the team to work differently and to push boundaries in terms of professionalism and safety.
Ladybird is guided by its SPEIR (Safety, Professionalism, Excellence, Integrity and Respect) values and a cultural commitment to: LOVE all; WORK hard; THINK “we” not “I”; SPEAK openly and honestly; BE confident and clean; LAUGH often.
The program supports WIT’s overall mission “to encourage the employment of women in the trucking industry, promote their accomplishments, and minimise the obstacles they face” Brian Everett, publisher of Redefining the Road magazine added.
The Top Woman-Owned Businesses in Transportation of 2019 were recognised at the Women In Trucking Accelerate! Conference & Expo in Dallas, Texas, USA.

The growth in the number of drivers strengthens the company’s resolve to provide more opportunities for women in this maledominated industry. New drivers on the team are expected to add to the over 520,000 km driven by their colleagues, without lost time injury (LTI), and contribute towards maintaining the company’s already stellar reputation.
The Ladybird drivers training programme is implemented in partnership with Scania West Africa, WATA (West African Transportation Academy) and the Ghanaian Armed Forces Mechanical Transport School (AFMTS).

Mining Services

ZEN has been delivering fuel, lubricants and associated services to leading mine sites in Ghana since its first contract award in 2009.

The leading supplier to mines in Ghana

Within 10 years ZEN has become the leading fuel supplier to mines in Ghana. To ensure a reliable and secure supply chain for quality fuels to the mines, ZEN works closely with BP Oil International to ring-fence its supply chain for the timely delivery of quality fuel to customers. The implementation of a customer-focused model has been successful, ensuring our position as market leader in Ghana. From day one, ZEN understood the critical importance of the fuel supply chain to meet the schedule
requirements of mines operating around the clock. For this reason, considerable investments have been made, where possible, in storage and transport facilities as well as the development of different modular options for fuel storage installations. In addition to arranging fuel deliveries, ZEN also performs consignment stock delivery services and full fuel depot management services on site, as and when required, with training and safety programs for frontline staff on discharging and handling of fuel.
ZEN Delivers
ZEN remains the supplier of choice, delivering to the largest and leading mines in Ghana, including; Gold Fields, Newmont, Asanko Gold, Golden Star, AngloGold Ashanti, Perseus, Kinross and Adamus Resources. Other customers include mining services contractors; AMS and PW. ZEN continues to develop as a holistic, end-to-end fuel solutions provider to the mining industry, supporting our customers to optimise their total cost of ownership of related assets.
Modular Mobile Fuel Facilities
We understand the fuel supply chain
Some of our clients
ZEN has made, and continues to make, significant investments in storage facilities and infrastructure to improve the security of supply to customers. Due to the often challenging geographical locations, ZEN has developed three different modular mobile storage tank options for mining sites, to further secure the availability of supplies. All options are scalable and can be deployed in a short space of time, to give customers comfort of adequate fuel stocks present at site.
Details of the modular options can be found on www.zenpetroleum.com
ZEN PETROLEUM
Storage Facility Assets
n Q3 2018, ZEN commissioned its 5.4 million litre capacity fuel storage facility for Gold Fields Ghana Limited’s Tarkwa mine. The four tanks, including 2 main storage units and 2 day service tanks, have been built to the latest technology standards in the industry, with delivery pumps capable of discharging a BRV at 4000 litres per minute. The tank farm also houses a complete bulk lubricants facility and can accommodate up to 6 tankers at any point in time. It has a separate unit for a staff canteen, offices, changing rooms and restrooms.

The construction of this facility by ZEN was a critical development for the mine and will further improve fuel supply security at site to about 3 weeks of stockholding. The whole project was completely managed and financed by ZEN, and constructed by ORSAM Ghana Limited.

ZEN looks to deliver such projects to customers wherever possible; to offer modern fuel storage facilities built to latest technology standards in effectiveness of design and efficiency of use.
Significant Investment in Security of Supply ZEN has committed to significant investments for its mining customers including the construction and management of fuel depots at key sites. Such investments include a 250,000 litre depot in Nzema, a 500,000 litre depot in Ayanfuri, an 800,000 litre depot in Manso Nkran, and a 5.4 million litre depot in Tarkwa.

As an indigenous Ghanaian company, we recognise the communities in which we operate as our own.

In 2019, Lead For Ghana was able to successfully organise its recruitment events in Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Cape Coast, University for Development Studies, the University of Ghana and Ashesi University due to ZEN’s support. These recruitment events offer the organisation an opportunity to meet, educate and market its vision to hundreds of university students. Through this, the organisation auspiciously recruited 33 brilliant university graduates into its 2019 leadership development program. These fellows are currently serving students across 3 districts and 12 schools in the Northern Region.

Lead For Ghana is a local not-for-profit organisation working assiduously to change this narrative. Through a two-year teaching fellowship, the organisation is committed to raising leaders to affect systemic changes to make excellent education accessible to all children irrespective of their economic background. ZEN’s financial assistance facilitated professional development sessions for 26 fellows in the Volta Region and 35 fellows in the Northern Region in 2018. During professional development sessions, trained staff, experts and industry leaders are taken to the various regions regularly, to organise leadership training sessions to equip the fellows with the extra support required to tackle a myriad of challenges that hinder teaching, academic success and mindset development.
According to the data gathered between 2015 (before Lead For Ghana fellows were placed in partner schools) through to 2019, the pass rate in the BECE recorded for the partner schools in the Northern and
Volta Regions has risen from 38% to 92% in the subject areas fellows taught. ZEN contributed to the organization realizing this goal. Also, through the support received, the organisation has been able to encourage fellows to engage in self-driven initiatives as young leaders. These fellows have mobilized resources as a result to construct libraries, they’ve led book drives and organised various field trips for their students in the communities they find themselves in. For instance, fellows from the 2019 cohort (Regina Okyere Darko and Lucky Adeline Aanomah) at Dakpema M/A Junior High School, noticing the lack of computers in the school, coordinated with the headteacher and parents to organise a trip to an IT institute in Tamale in an effort to practicalise the learning of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Regina and Lucky are currently working with the Tamale ICT Center to provide computers for the school to facilitate the learning of ICT. It is evident from the impact garnered so far that the Alumni of the program, students and the community have benefited from ZEN’s financial assistance. Mr. William Tewiah (MD, ZEN Petroleum) impacted the fellows during Lead For Ghana’s annual masterclass to strive for excellence. Alumni have championed various education-oriented not-for-profit organisations and businesses as a result of the program and lesson learned from Mr. William Tewiah.
Lead For Ghana is grateful to ZEN for helping to groom leaders for educational equity.

ZEN culture is characterised by pragmatism. Few companies balance technical/management skills and common sense like we do.
• Friendliness, flexibility, informal but very professional working environment.
• Flat organisation, with easily accessible top management.
• Networking to get the job done, not hierarchy.
• Mainly informal, desk-side, to-the-point meetings.
• Not too many rules, but strict enforcement of the few we have, especially regarding standards, safety and compliance.
• Minimalism and results orientation i.e. fewer steps to safe and good quality execution – if a process can be done safely and effectively in 3 steps, we won’t design a 4-step process; if a policy can be effectively communicated in one page, we don’t do it in 3 pages; if a one-line email will suffice, we don’t do spreadsheets.
• Pragmatism. Few companies value and balance technical/ management skills and common sense like we do.
At ZEN our recruitment decisions are driven by our Culture and our SHARED Values: Safety, Honour, Agility, Respect for the Individual, Empowerment and Delivery.
Safety
SThe safety of our employees, customers and environment always comes first and takes precedence over the attainment of all other objectives. We believe that if it cannot be done safely, it cannot be done right. The safe way to do things is the best and most effective way in the long run, and all our actions must reflect this individual and collective commitment.
Honour
HWe individually regard it as a rare opportunity and privilege to work with our colleagues and to serve our customers; doing so brings us pride, esteem and pleasure. We believe that pride in and honour from our individual and collective achievements is our greatest motivator.

Agility
AWe respond more quickly and decisively to anything that concerns the customer. We work smart without cutting corners. Our responsiveness to our customer’s expectations determines our organisation structure, our processes, our practices, our plans and our product and service offers.
Respect for the Individual
We are a collection of dedicated, hardworking, ordinary people who have teamed up to accomplish extraordinary things. We have very different backgrounds and beliefs but we believe that every individual deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.
Empowerment
We promote networks over perceived hierarchies, empowerment over stifling controls. We believe in and foster an enabling environment. We believe in demonstrating leadership at every level and empowering our employees to enhance their personal development and effectiveness, and hence ultimately, their ability to meet the expectations of our customers.
Delivery
We are known for managing our value chain with the aim of delivering to our customers on time and in full, every time. We constantly push boundaries. We only stand down when the customer says “received, ok”.

promise of competitively priced, high quality fuel and where a litre will always be a litre. Ghana will always be the number 1 priority for ZEN. The commitment from ZEN in its safety and efficiency of supply will ensure its pricing can remain competitive for consumers, with retail prices consistently and significantly below the key market competitors.
In 10 years, ZEN has earned its seat at the table with the leading oil majors in Ghana. In the next 10 years, ZEN will cement its seat at the table, and offer inspiration for other indigenous firms to join. Our network will grow, the workforce will grow, the service offerings will grow, but the values and promises of ZEN to its staff and customers will remain the same, and ZEN will always deliver the Right Quantity, the Right Quality at the Right Price.
Inspiration for Indigenous Firms
ZEN over the last 10 years has had to be very brave, and unrelenting in its quest to prove a new Ghanaian company can compete against worldwide majors in the petroleum industry in Ghana. Competing against companies with over 100 years of trading, and over 50 years in Ghana is no easy task. ZEN has had one vision to prove not only can it compete, it can match and exceed the standards of the market.
ZEN hopes its journey inspires other indigenous companies to try and follow the same route, in the petroleum industry, and other key industries that are often left only for large multinational firms.

Within 10 years ZEN has become the leading fuel supplier to mines in Ghana.
