One of the main focuses at ConnecTechAsia is 5G, and visitors who want a taste of 5G will get a chance to immerse themselves in this technology via the 5G Xperience Zone at Marina Bay Sands presented by KT Corporation.

Yoon Jong-Jin, Senior Executive VicePresident of Public Relations at KT Corporation, told the Show Daily that KT is focusing on developing innovative 5G technologies and services, such as AI, AR, SKYSHIP and satellite communications.

“In the new 5G era, KT will transform from the largest national network operator into the world’s leading global intelligence platform by

collaborating with innovative partners around the globe,” Mr Yoon said.

Spurred by growing populations and rapid urbanisation, governments from around the region are now looking into developing smart cities to improve their citizens’ quality of life.

This year’s summit features a panel BAY SANDS discussion on future cities where MARINA government, & SUNTEC SINGAPORE business leaders and analysts from Singapore’s Smart Nation Digital Government Group, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, and McKinsey & Co. will discuss the ongoing Incorporating: challenges around smart city developments, infrastructure and regulatory hurdles, and the need to foster citizen inclusiveness and engagement.

“Thanks to TV digitisation, networking everywhere has totally transformed the TV industry including tying in social media with video on demand. 5G will only further accelerate this especially with 4K,” said Stan Moote, CTO, IABM. Mr Moote is presenting a session tomorrow on the reality of 5G in broadcasting.

Meanwhile, NXTAsia will showcase technologies such as OTSAW’s O-R2 indoor autonomous security robot that integrates self-driving, AI, data gathering and analysis capabilities, face recognition and live 360-degree streaming.

“ConnecTechAsia continues to be the regional telecom, media and technology event to look out for,” said Tan Kiat How, Chief Executive, Infocomm Media Development Authority.

G is here. The much anticipated infrastructure that will enable a smarter and more connected world promised to drive digital economies for governments, to create new monetization opportunities for businesses and offer a real perceivable difference over 4G for consumers.

Has it delivered? Well, not yet. However, there have been some critical changes on the supply side. Firstly, sites, especially indoor sites, are no longer solely owned by mobile operators but increasingly owned by tower companies and neutral hosts. Secondly, an Open Site Interest Group has been set up.

Thirdly, industry is increasingly accelerating applications through standardization. Lastly, a spirit of enablement across the region is helping to bring it all together through industry collaborations.

So, will it happen? Possibly. To make it reality, industry needs to focus and look indoors.

As the number of 5G launches increase in number, mobile data usage will increase exponentially alongside new applications such as IoT, virtual/augmented reality, 8K live

video streaming and location-based services.

With 80% of network traffic already originating from indoors, it is not hard to see that indoor use cases will not only become a key driver of 5G networks but also a trigger to revisit customer experience indoors and focus of CAPEX for 5G on the supply side.

In a recent survey 79% of respondents said that they will rate their mobile operator according to the indoor network quality that they experience. User needs are changing on the demand side and Digital Indoor Systems (DIS) will be critical to enabling monetization of 5G. A key success factor for DIS would be for mobile operators to focus on key verticals where there will be stronger growth and

he Summit starts with a combined plenary themed on shaping future societies for both BroadcastAsia and CommunicAsia participants at the Marina Bay Sands.

The opening keynote recognizes the leading role that this has to play within organizations and societies. The region, as we find with the rest of the world, facing challenges and opportunities brought forward by rapid technological advances.

Businesses are talking about transformation driven by unprecedented convergence in technology and services. Convergence as well as artificial intelligence (AI), automation, Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain and 5G are reshaping business operations and architectures. They have impacted the social eco-system forcing us to review regulatory frameworks.

We have witnessed a high level of

convergence in the media and telco industries, the question that needs to be asked is what is going on now: Is it consolidation, competition or collaboration?

The summit aims to answer this.

A number of cellular operators in the APAC region are making plans for the introduction of 5G services in a commercial platform after having carried out some trails. As 5G offers little for current voice communication, 5G operators need to work with a wide range of industries by finding new applications and partners. Cross-industry collaboration will be the key to making 5G a success. There will be a CXO roundtable on 5G that will broadly address 5G as the future game changer of data, networks and consumption. Based on current trails, knowledge and experiences, the session will discuss challenges and journey ahead for 5G commercialization with

a clearer value proposition for 5G indoor connectivity. Some examples of the more promising key verticals include: • Shopping malls as shopping experience centers providing value added network-based services such as AR/VR game services and heat maps; • Stadiums to offer unique, thrilling experiences for audiences using AR; • Industry to support augmented remote service assistance and analysis to improve operational efficiency and productivity.

In conclusion, conventional economics dictate that the supply side needs to be optimized to address changes on the demand side. There is no doubt that indoor use cases will become a key driver of 5G networks and correspondingly users will make increasing demands on their mobile operator when it comes to the indoor environment. Focus needs to shift to transforming the indoors environment for DIS to enable 5G within select key verticals to trigger the next wave of growth.

The partnerships with telcos could be an organic fit due to their central role in enabling data consumption and capabilities in user authentication. A panel discussion will explore issues that are relevant to both parties in the streaming ecosystem. The focus will be on building scalable partnerships, mechanisms to launch new partnerships by minimizing cannibalization.

While cloud has offered many opportunities and more efficient operations, it also has brought challenges due to threats arising from cyber-attacks. Media gathers highly sensitive data such as audience profiles through interactions. Improved connectivity and the adoption of automated processes demand different approaches to cybersecurity to effectively protect against future cyber risks.

Gazprom Space Systems Launches Yamal-601

T

he Yamal-601 telecommunications satellite, which has been designed and built

by Thales Alenia Space for Gazprom Space Systems, has been successfully launched.

Launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan by a Proton M/Breeze M rocket, the satellite will provide fixed communications, broadcast and Internet access services.

However, it was reported that the satellite had experienced difficulties with its main engine and was maneuvering to its final operating position on backup thrusters.

For the project, Thales Alenia Space was the prime contractor and in charge of satellite design, production and turnkey delivery, along with control software for the ground segment.

Based on the Thales Alenia Space Spacebus 4000C4 platform, Yamal-601 is fitted with 18 C-band transponders to cover Russia, neighboring CIS countries, the Middle East and part of Southeast Asia; and a Ka-band payload with 32 spotbeams for the Western part of Russia as well as West Siberia.

7.3 kW of payload power and a design life exceeding 15 years. Yamal-601 will replace Yamal-202 at the 49°E orbital position and provide extended coverage.

NTU Raises Production Values

ingapore’s Nanyang Technological University (NTU) has raised its production values with Ross Video equipment purchases…

The in-house media production team works on a diverse range of events across the academic year, from concerts and seminars to symposia and graduation ceremonies. With a packed calendar of commitments and the desire to improve overall production values, Mr Leonard H. Sim, Technical Producer at NTU, turned to Ross Video’s Singapore office for guidance and support.

“We have a large auditorium and regularly work on multi-camera productions so are constantly looking at new equipment for our facility, in order to keep-up with the best standards and to ensure our production values meet the expectations of our audience”, noted Mr Sim. “We wanted to improve the look of our content and also make our productions easier to run and more efficient, so we talked with Ross.”

That discussion led to the purchase of a Carbonite 2ME production switcher, XPression graphics package and the Furio SE robotic camera motion system.

“We really liked the idea of installing the Furio in our auditorium to take our camera operator out of the room - he’s now in the gallery operating the camera by joystick - and to and enable us to get more smooth and dynamic camera shots”, said Mr Sim. “The Ross team really helped us to work within the

EUTELSAT 7C Arrives In Kourou E

UTELSAT 7C, Eutelsat Communications’ newest high-power broadcast satellite, recently arrived at the European Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana where it is due to be launched as a co-passenger on an Ariane 5 rocket on June 20.

Built by Maxar Technologies, the 3.4 tonne satellite will serve markets across Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Turkey through 49 36-Mhz equivalent Ku-band transponders.

It will be co-located with EUTELSAT 7B at 7° East, increasing capacity for this dynamic neighborhood by 19 transponders. EUTELSAT 7A will be relocated as part of Eutelsat’s fleet optimization strategy.

The launch is scheduled for June 20 during a launch window opening at 21:43 UTC and closing at 23:30 UTC. The satellite will go into full commercial service at the end of 2019 following all electric orbit raising and in orbit tests. As part of the environmental testing completed in early February, the all-electric

ombining the compact size and low weight of the popular ALEXA Mini with the largeformat ALEXA LF sensor, the ALEXA Mini LF offers exciting new creative possibilities to the ARRI large-format camera system.

Robust and reliable, it provides the best overall image quality for large-format shooting, featuring three internal motorized FSND filters, 12V power input, extra power outputs, a new Codex Compact Drive, and a new MVF-2 high-contrast HD viewfinder.

ARRI’s large-format camera system was launched in 2018 and is based on a 4.5K version of the ALEXA sensor, which is twice the size and offers twice the resolution of ALEXA cameras in 35 format. This allows filmmakers to explore their own take on the large-format look, thanks to improvements on the ALEXA sensor’s famously natural colorimetry, pleasing skin tones, low noise, and suitability for HDR and WCG workflows.

ALEXA Mini LF now joins the existing system elements: the high speed ALEXA LF camera, ARRI Signature Prime lenses, LPL lens mount, PL-to-LPL adapter, and Lens Data System LDS-2. The combined feature sets and form factors of ARRI’s two large-format cameras deliver all on-set requirements.

Accompanying the ALEXA LF and ALEXA Mini LF camera are 16 largeformat ARRI Signature Prime lenses, ranging from 12mm to 280mm and fitted with the ARRI LPL mount. While the Signature Primes exemplify state-of-the-art optical precision, they render organic, emotionally engaging images, gently softening and texturizing the large format. A fast T-stop of T1.8 facilitates shallow depth of field and the smooth focus fall-off gives subjects heightened presence in the frame.

The Newtec Dialog platform is providing IP connectivity for the Solomon Islands government, with a single hop service from remote islands to the capital, Honiara. SATSOL is currently rolling out the remote sites, initially in ten provincial hub locations. The education system will also benefit as the improved provincial network will be extended to secondary schools.

hese networks utilize multiple different and complementary technologies that comprise both terrestrial and satellite infrastructure.

Blackmagic Captures Captain Marvel Action Blackmagic’s Micro Cinema Camera was used in the filming of key action sequences on Captain Marvel...

T

he Marvel Studios’ film was lensed by cinematographer Ben Davis, BSC (Avengers: Age of Ultron, Doctor Strange and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri).

Opting for a large format digital camera paired with a mix of spherical and vintage Panavision glass, as the principal package, Davis also required a smaller, more versatile camera during filming. “We tested various options searching for that magic combination of size and quality, and the Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera was the clear winner,” he says.

According to Davis the Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera setups were kept as small as possible. “The camera’s expansion port gave us lots of options for creating rigs for remote operation and monitoring. Coupled with the fact you can record RAW onboard using SD cards also helped to keep everything small and compact.”

“In the past I’ve made the mistake of rigging small action cameras with big lenses, not to mention a protective cage, a motor to drive focus, a monitor to frame and then a

Airbus to Build Multimission Satellite for MEASAT

EASAT has selected Airbus to build MEASAT-3d, a new multimission telecommunications satellite to replace capacity and augment its core business in Malaysia, Asia, Middle East and Africa.

Positioned at 91.5°E collocated with MEASAT-3b, also built by Airbus, MEASAT3d will deliver improved performances to progressively replace MEASAT-3 and MEASAT-3a, supporting Asia’s premium DTH video distribution.

Planned to launch in 2021, MEASAT-3d will provide C and Ku-band capacity for DTH, video distribution and telecommunication services. The new HTS Ka-band mission features multiple user spot beams optimized to deliver high speed broadband communications over Malaysia to bridge the digital divide in the country.

Dr Edmund Kong, MEASAT’s Chief Technology Officer, says: “We are delighted to once again appoint Airbus as the manufacturer of MEASAT’s eighth communication satellite. The collaboration combines VMware SDWAN by VeloCloud with Ekinops’ OneAccessbranded Open Virtualization Platform (OVP) and OneManage Provisioning and Monitoring system in a pre-validated and fully integrated solution.

The OneAccess OVP Design Studio and OneManage software enable service providers to offer enterprise customers a range of new services running on an Ekinops vCPE or on a universal CPE. Those services may include certified VNFs such as vRouters, SD-WANs, vFirewalls, vSBC and WAN optimization functions as well as simple virtualized Linux or Windows servers. In this context, leveraging Ekinops OneManage and Design Studio allows service providers to expand their services to the edges of their network with agility and control and deliver fast virtual network design and end-to-end zero touch provisioning.

ilat Satellite Networks has been named a world leader in shipments of cellular backhaul over satellite, according to Wireless Backhaul & 5G via Satellite - NSR report, published in April 2019.

According to the report, Gilat achieved 35 percent market share in modem shipments for cellular backhaul over satellite.

“With its innovative technology, Gilat has been able to lead the way for 4G over satellite with deployments for Tier-1 operators of unprecedented sizes in the satellite space,” says Lluc Palerm, Senior Analyst at NSR. “As MNOs continue upgrading its rural networks into 4G, and eventually 5G, Gilat is strongly positioned to continue experiencing growth in backhaul.”

Market analysts are unified on the fast-growing 4G/LTE satellite backhaul market. NSR reports the service, equipment, and capacity for this market at $820M in 2018 with an expected growth to $3,790M by 2028.

NSR adds that bandwidth pricing efficiencies will contribute to a growing demand for differentiated managed service solutions in rural areas, providing opportunities in the industry.

TRUE KVM - A Philosophy for KVM solutions in Broadcast

I

n broadcast production systems it is crucial that producers, editors, engineers and other operational staff can access computer-based systems they constantly rely on, in real-time, without image degradation or failure, says Terence Teng, Managing Director, IHSE APAC. KVM extenders and switches are now commonly included in large, complex broadcast installations and must comply with those fundamental requirements.

Broadcast transmission systems are becoming ever-more complex and sophisticated as the workflow moves toward a network-centric model. Operators working in a broadcast facility need to be able to access a wide variety of devices - some of which will be local, some may be remote and others will only exist in a virtual domain in the cloud.

TRUE KVM refers to the essential constituents that make up a high performance KVM system: everything that a ‘true’ KVM system must offer broadcast users.

With regards to performance, the image presented to the user must be accurate, without any artefacts or degradation. There should be no perceivable delay. This is particularly important in the broadcast industry as it relies on visually and audibly perfect content.

Reliability is key, and with the prevalence of 24-hour broadcasting, facilities must operate on a continual 24/7 basis. To ensure this broadcast chains are heavily backed up with redundant components. Draco extenders and switches incorporate extensive back-up facilities to meet every level of reliability and redundancy strategy.

Security is paramount and broadcast operations must prevent unauthorized access. Any system that relies on an IP network is likely to have exposed entry points and will require extensive firewall and isolation procedures. Direct KVM systems, like Draco, are closed and cannot be accessed by remote network devices. Internal data protocols ensure that data is encrypted and not readily available externally. Draco KVM switches are protected by another layer of security, SecureCore, which isolates the signals passing through the switch from the outside world.

The control layer for the KVM system should be separate to the signal path. Should the data network become compromised, users still need to manage and reconfigure remote devices. This is not easily achieved on networked-based distribution system. We employ an ‘out-of-band’ control topography to achieve this in the Draco tera.

Lastly, there’s connectivity. The broadcast industry is evolving rapidly and moving to a network-centric, cloud-based, infrastructure.

KVM must also evolve. New IP CPU and CON units allow connection to computers

The 9992-ENC base model supports both MPEG-2 and H.264 (AVC), with low-latency 8-bit and 10-bit 4:2:0 encoding. For high-end contribution, optional license keys provide H.265 (HEVC) support as well as 4:2:2 encoding. The base model includes a 3G-SDI input that supports one signal up to 1080p60, but can be upgraded to support three additional 1080p60 signals for high density workflows or one 4Kp60 signal (four 3G-SDI signals or one 12G-SDI signal).

Dual Gigabit Ethernet ports support a variety of protocols and stream replication (with the same multiplexing capabilities as the ASI ports) for distribution flexibility.

The 9992-ENC supports transport streams over standard UDP/RTP, RTMP, and single profile HTTP live streaming (HLS), so it can be used for direct streaming to CDNs. Additional licenses support advanced protocols including SMPTE-2022 FEC and ARQ for packet loss protection, as well as RIST (Reliable Internet Stream Transport) for reliable, low-latency contribution over the internet without the need for additional gateways. For audio, the 9992-ENC supports MPEG-1 Layer II, AAC-LC, HE-AAC (V1 and V2), Dolby Digital (AC-3), Dolby Digital Plus (E-AC-3), and 5.1 surround sound options.

The base model includes two stereo pairs per video signal, but the encoder supports up to 16 stereo pairs that can be assigned to any of the encoder channels.

Kino Flo Lighting Turns the Tables on HD Cameras

M

aking an ingenious leap, Kino Flo has turned the tables on cinema cameras with new proprietary LUTs (look-up tables) that balance their LED lights to the cameras, rather than the other way around. This breakthrough firmware and proprietary tungsten and daylight LED emitters harmonize with the camera sensors even as the color temperature settings are adjusted.

“The color science of LED lighting is to cinematographers what natural pigments were to the Old World masters like Rembrandt and Vermeer,” according to company President, Frieder Hochheim. “With new features like camera look-up tables and advanced gama controls, cinematographers can mix their own LED ‘dye, color and shading’ to control the look of the final image.”

Like other innovations over the years, Kino Flo’s new LUTs and gama control features represent another step in pioneering a new generation of broad spectrum LED softlights and pushing the color space to new artistic levels, according to cinematographer John Daly, BSC. “The color science is great, and Kino Flo’s range of LEDs can be fine-tuned with camera LUTs,” Daly said. “The color can be dialed in to match the sensors of major digital cinema cameras, thus ensuring natural looking skin tones.”

The Kino Flo True Match® firmware 4.0 comes loaded with camera look-up tables for the following cinema cameras: Panavision DXL; Sony Venice; Alexa; and Panasonic Varicam. More makes and models of HD cameras will be added to the LUTs in upcoming firmware releases.

In addition to the camera LUTs, Kino Flo’s new firmware has expanded the color control for Kino Flo’s growing line of LED products, including the Celeb LEDs, FreeStyle LED Fixtues & Tubes, Diva-Lite LEDs and L80 & L40 Image LEDs. Three additional software programs include: Color Space Selection; CIE xy Mode; and DMX Control of FX. During a recent series of international cinematography workshops, Hochheim outlined the industry’s ongoing journey toward creating artificial light sources that render color naturally on HD cinema cameras.

H

owever, these must supply the desired capacity and deliver higher data speeds with significant operational cost savings. Operators need to determine which combination of technologies and approaches will best meet subscriber demand over the next five to 10 years. Many are adopting DOCSIS 3.1 and Distributed Access Architectures, while employing Remote PHY (R-PHY) as a key ingredient in the transformation required to build a more efficient, scalable, cost-effective network.

R-PHY is a technique for separating the QAM modulation/demodulation portion of the traditional integrated Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) or Converged Cable Access Platform (CCAP) and moving it to the end of the network. Shifting these components out of the CMTS or CCAP closer to the subscriber boosts signal performance

and reduces space and power requirements at the headend. These benefits make R-PHY a potent tool for operators.

One of the first Remote PHY deployments was performed in 2016 by Stofa, Denmark’s second-biggest provider of television, broadband and telephony. Stofa chose ARRIS as a partner for technology, planning, network design and product deployment.

As the cable operator has discovered, benefits of the upgrade include leveraging DOCSIS 3.1 to increase capacity in both the upstream and the downstream directions.

Transitioning to digital fiber drives better utilization by multiplexing many nodes onto the same existing fiber and dynamically sharing traffic across fibers. Reaching a higher modulation order increases the amount of spectrum available for services.

For Stofa, the greatest value impact of

R-PHY occurred at the headend, in the form of space and power savings and the potential for facilities consolidation.

Moving PHY processing out of the headend reduced the number of rack units required by more than two thirds and cut power demand in half.

The number of managed headend devices needed to support 200 service groups dropped from eight to four, radically simplifying operations. Other benefits include a single provisioning interface for the MAC core and fewer interoperability issues. With fewer IP addresses needed, the operations team can keep a smaller inventory to deal with outages.

Arianespace to Orbit Spanish SEOSat/Ingenio Earth Observation Satellite A

rianespace and the European Space Agency (ESA/Earth Observation Programs directorate) have signed a launch services contract with a Vega launcher for SEOSat (Spanish Earth Observation SATellite) for Spain’s Center for Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI).

SEOSat/Ingenio is a high-resolution optical imaging mission of Spain - the flagship mission of the Spanish Space Strategic Plan. It will be launched along with the French CNES space agency’s TARANIS satellite aboard a Vega launch vehicle in the first semester of 2020 from the Guiana Space Center. The SEOSat/Ingenio mission is devoted to providing high resolution multispectral land optical images to different Spanish civil, institutional and government users, and potentially to other European users in the framework of the European Copernicus program and GEOSS (Global Earth Observation System of Systems).

High-band spectrum travels much shorter distances, but offers the greater capacity required for data-intensive applications.

Mid-band spectrum blends the attributes of both, delivering high capacity across larger geographic areas. In 2018, Analysys Mason compiled the mid-band spectrum plans of 13 countries, including the United States. Key findings included that by the end of 2020: On average, countries included in the study will make four times more licensed mid-band spectrum available than the United States.

Japan is planning to make 10 times more licensed mid-band spectrum available than the United States.

China is planning to make more than seven times more licensed mid-band spectrum available than the United States; the United Kingdom is planning to make nearly five times more licensed mid-band spectrum available.

“Resources available to U.S. operators are improving, but spectrum in the mid-band remains limited compared to other leading 5G markets,” said Janette Stewart, a Principal with Analysys Mason and the lead author of the report, “Mid-band spectrum will be key to wider-area 5G coverage.”

CWDM vs DWDM: What’s the difference?

Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM), with its routes in the IP domain has suddenly become a hot topic for the satellite industry, says Steve Fendley of ETL Systems...

G

enerally speaking, there is now a much bigger distance between the satellite dish and operating center. When sending signals over 400km distances and in certain circumstances, DWDM is the only reliable way to do that without affecting signal quality.

RF over Fiber When you send RF signals from a satellite dish over fiber to the control center, how you do it depends on a number of factors.

These include the distance it needs to travel, the number of fibers you have, whether you own that fiber or have to rent it, how many channels there are, for example. The simplest way to do it is to have a separate fiber for each feed. In 90% of cases we are talking just a few feeds coming off the antenna and going across a short unimpeded distance. In these cases, simple works absolutely fine.

However, the demand from SatComs operators requesting to carry signals from dishes over hundreds of kilometers distances has surged. And the rising use of High Throughput Satellite (HTS) and KA Band is one of the biggest drivers for DWDM technology. Many operators are deploying diverse sites to combat potential rain fade, which can cause severe loss of signal in extreme weather conditions. But the distance of diverse sites away from the main site depends on the location. In some places, weather is so localized that 40 kilometers may be enough. But in most scenarios, between 70 - 100 kilometers is required to be in a different weather pattern. The signals need to get to both the main and backup antennas in the same condition and DWDM is currently the only way to ensure that.

What is the difference between DWDM and CWDM? There is often confusion between Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM) and DWDM. Both technologies are able to send multiple optical signals over single fibers.

CWDM combines up to eight optical signals on a single fiber by using different wavelengths (at 20 nanometers apart) for each signal. Wavelengths are combined in a CWDM multiplexer and separated at the other end in a CWDM demultiplexer.

CWDM combines up to eight optical signals on a single fiber

DWDM combines multiple optical signals on a single fiber, again by using different wavelengths. These are combined and separated using DWDM multiplexers and demultiplexers, in the same way as CWDM. However, DWDM transmitters use a different laser technology, each creating a narrower spectrum of light allowing a higher number of wavelengths to be combined in a narrow optical bandwidth, allowing them to be combined at spacings of less than 1 nanometer.

The problem arises when you want to go over a longer distance. This naturally causes more optical loss in the fiber, resulting in the use of an optical amplifier to boost signal. This is most commonly done using an Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA).

The distance at which the EDFA becomes necessary depends on the quality of the equipment and the fiber itself. Generally, if you operate above 70 kilometers, you are likely to need an EDFA but sometimes you may need that at a shorter distance.

As soon as you use an EDFA, CWDM becomes unfeasible. Because EDFAs are inherently narrow band so in order to amplify multiple wavelengths you now need that much finer optical signal only achieved with DWDM.

The Challenges

The Opportunity of DWDM

DWDM is becoming increasingly important in the satellite industry. However, it is not without its challenges. The biggest of which is that of dark fiber, i.e. fiber that is rented, usually from a telecoms operator.

Most long fiber transmission paths use dark fiber. Which makes sense, as even though the cost of rental is extremely high wherever you are in the world, the cost and effort of laying your own fiber is even higher and totally impractical.

Making cost another driver for DWDM. Nobody wants to rent more fibers than necessary, therefore being able to send multiple signals on a single fiber is very attractive.

However, dark fiber isn’t without disadvantages. Not knowing the condition of the cable you are using and lack of specialist knowledge from providers can be a drawback.

Many telecom operators do not understand the requirements for RF signal transmission.

Consequently, making it clear that RF signals need a dedicated and specific type of fiber cable, not shared with other data communications is quite challenging. If that is not adhered to, it can be detrimental to the signal, the very thing we are trying to protect.

Despite that challenge, DWDM mostly represents an excellent opportunity for those long-distance signals. Dark fiber can have its challenges, but predominantly it doesn’t cause a problem, with many telecom operators perfectly able to adhere to stringent RF requirements.

Ultimately, DWDM means that RF signals can be sent over hundreds of kilometers without massive signal losses, therefore maintaining that all important quality of the feed.

Of course, if your antenna and control center are 50 kilometers away and only have a couple of feeds, use a normal RF over fiber link. If you are crossing long distances but you have a perfectly functioning satellite network in each location, use satellite.

However, if you need something that works when satellite is not available or could be disturbed by extremes in weather, DWDM is an extremely valuable, even vital, technology.

he JT-NM Tested Program, a program designed by the Joint Task Force on Networked Media (JT-NM), offers prospective purchasers of IP-based equipment more and better-documented insight into how vendor equipment aligns to the SMPTE ST 2110 and SMPTE ST 2059 standards.

The results show that PHABRIX’s Qx IP V3.0 is the only test and measurement product to support four flows simultaneously: 1 x Video, 2 x Audio, 1 x ANC flows, and to support -20, -30, -40 with 2022-7 on all four flows.

IoT Cybersecurity Challenges and Solutions I

oT is the Internet “new kid on the block”, and the fact that Internet is hardly a secure environment itself makes IoT devices even less so.

There have been several high-profile events involving the use of IoT devices as nodes in wider botnet attacks that highlight IoT’s vulnerability, and with the growing maturity of IoT devices, security will likely become a market differentiator.

A company selling Internet cameras that offer lifetime security upgrades is going to accumulate more sales than a rival company that does not.

Further risks associated with both home and enterprise IoT include data security concerns, personal and public physical safety risks (my car has been hacked), privacy issues (my home camera has been hacked), and data storage management following the exponential growth of IoT devices.

So, what can be done to secure our

increasingly IoT-connected world? There are several steps that IoT OEMs could take to mitigate the risk. For example, IoT device manufacturers could make security a primary concern during all phases of device development. They could also provide lifecycle device updates. However, these and similar suggestions are unlikely to occur. The real issue is cost.

ATDI Group Launches HTZ Communications A

TDI Group has launched HTZ communications, the new generation of ICS telecom, its flagship RF engineering software.

The RF design and analysis solution includes several new features such as automatic coverage calculation and analysis, and in-built GIS engine which allows for the creation of high-resolution building information in raster from DSM samples.

Using HTZ communications, any radio operators who deal with repetitive network studies regularly can now automate the entire process. This feature includes GIS data importation from data conversion from generic GIS formats such as GeoTIFF. The engine automatically calculates coverage of individual sites and then produces composite coverage, and identifies best servers, studies overlaps, and calculates C/ N+I map in dB. For 4G and 5G networks, it also automatically calculates SINR and throughput. An automatic microwave path

calculation engine also features, which has an email notification function when configured and if minimum clearance defined is not met.

All the study results are exported in KMZ and TIF/TFW files and pushed to a display engine in the operation center.

With ATDI solutions, converting GIS data for RF engineering purposes are no longer a problem. HTZ communications has a GIS engine to convert .TIFF, ASCII Grid, and .shp files into ATDI formats.

The GIS engine creates a high-resolution building layer using DTM heights. This is based on correlation between DSM and DTM, thanks to the new option of extracting building samples from the DSM layer.

ATDI have also included changes in their software license management. From the new version, it will issue licenses in software format that controls the licensees, sessions and workstations through online servers.

SR Live for HDR offers efficient live HDR production

The UHC-8300 can generate 8K, 4K and HD signals simultaneously

public cloud platforms or using private IT infrastructure. The processed content can then be delivered via a CDN service - and/or via a self-built CDN. OTT service myTV SUPER in Hong Kong set out to offer a rich set of time-shift TV functionality, including catch-up, pause-live and start-over. Important requirements were a higher picture quality, including 4K, and support for live subtitling across a wide range of screen sizes and devices.

Rather than using a public CDN service, myTV SUPER decided that the best way to meet its objectives was to build its own TV CDN and control the delivery of its new OTT services.

Built using Edgeware TV servers, controlled by the TV Director request routing software, myTV SUPER had a CDN with a total streaming capacity of more than 1Tbps. They deployed Edgeware’s TV Repackager integrated with Cavena OCR subtitling.

taying on top of the latest technology trends in the broadcasting space can be a challenge. With over 40 years of broadcast experience and expertise, MatroxÂŽ Video has identified three top trends to keep an eye on in 2019.

4K on the Rise - New Formats: Growing in popularity, 4K-supported televisions outnumber HD televisions in electronics stores, while UHD movies and TV series are available on popular streaming services. Yet broadcasters need to consider whether the investment in the bandwidth and equipment necessary to produce and distribute 4K content is worthwhile - especially since the primary delivery mechanism is through digital transmission, i.e., via DTTV, IP, or satellite.

The 4K content is ready and available, so broadcasters will be actively looking for a cost-effective means to get 4K out to a broader audience.

SMPTE ST 2110 - New Connectivity: The SMPTE ST 2110 standard is rapidly gaining traction and for good reason. Many broadcasters want to update or expand their facilities, but they are looking at enterprise IT infrastructure as

a model to do so. Broadcasters now have a choice of remaining with existing SDI infrastructures or renewing facilities using SMPTE ST 2110, IT-based systems. The SMPTE ST 2110 standard replaces the need for SDI routers and dedicated SDI video production systems, by defining a standard way to transmit uncompressed audio and video data across high-performance IT networks.

Remote Productions - New Workflows: With the rise of high-bandwidth WAN connectivity, whether public or private, broadcasters have begun looking at remote integration (REMI) or remote at home productions. This involves sending raw highquality camera feeds from the field over IP

to a centralized live production system. This improves efficiency and minimizes costs by using these in-house or cloud-based production systems to produce highquality live programming. With remote production, fewer staff and equipment are required in the field - lowering costs.

The studio is also able to cover multiple events in a single day with the same personnel. Another cost-efficient option is to send remote feeds directly to cloud-based production software, whose program outputs can be directly transmitted to OTT and social media platforms.

JVC Launches JVC Professional Video has announced the GY-HC900 “CONNECTED CAM™” broadcast camcorder...

T

he camcorder features three 2/3-inch CMOS image sensors for full HD imagery, as well as enhanced connectivity for a complete news-over-IP workflow solution in the field.

When paired directly with the optional ProHD Dockable Bridge or via Wi-Fi with any ProHD Bridge unit, the GY-HC900 allows onair talent to conduct a two-way interview with return video while streaming live to air. A new communications engine optimizes both image processing and IP performance. Latency can be as low as 500ms for both outgoing and incoming video.

“JVC’s CONNECTED CAM takes connectivity to the next level and sets a new benchmark for ENG cameras,” says Joe D’Amico, Vice President, JVC Professional Video. “Its integrated communications engine truly makes news-over-IP a reality with amazing images and a cost effective, streamlined workflow.”

The GY-HC900’s IP workflow includes streaming performance up to 24 Mbps and built-in Wi-Fi (2.4Ghz/5GHz) with dual

external antennas. The camera also features Zixi error correction with automatic repeat request and SMPTE 2022 forward error correction.

For EFP and studio fiber applications, the GY-HC900 works with the FS-900 camera module, which attaches to the camera via a 68-pin interface, and feeds 3G-SDI signals, control, audio, sync, and intercom to a base station via fiber.

Equipped with an industry standard B4 lens mount and four-position optical filter, the GYHC900 delivers sensitivity (F12 at 60Hz, F13

at 50Hz in extended mode) and high 62dB signal-to-noise ratio (in standard mode). The advanced 2/3-inch CMOS sensors, each with 1920x1080 pixels, combine with an F1.4 prism to produce full HD images. The camera also offers an HDR mode, as well as up to 120fps 1080p slow-motion recording.

H.264 (.MOV), which provides production quality 10-bit, 1080/60p 4:2:2 footage. Plus, the camcorder records in MP4 formats, so sports organizations can produce HD video with rich metadata that specifically addresses the workflow needs of sports production and video coaching applications.

With dual memory card slots for SDHC/ SDXC media, the GY-HC900 offers redundant, relay, and backup recording modes. It also records proxy resolution video clips for offline editing or online posts.

The camera includes a 3.26-inch OLED color viewfinder, as well as a 3.5-inch LCD panel for menu navigation.

An integrated 3G-SDI pool feed input allows the GY-HC900 operator to capture video and stream it live simultaneously.

Live sports and events streaming, in particular, is rising. While live sports attract huge audiences and monetization opportunities, the quality of video streaming has to be near perfect. Let’s look at three reasons why delivering live OTT video is a challenge and how centralized monitoring solutions can help.

OTT is a Complex Environment: For years content owners and service providers delivered content over managed networks.

OTT video delivery is more complex and is still evolving, with multiple different screens, formats, DRM requirements, and new standards and specifications under development. Furthermore, content quality changes based on available bandwidth and

whether there is network congestion, giving service providers less control over viewers’ quality of experience.

Live Issues Require Immediate Attention: In the VOD world, service providers aren’t under as intense time constraints and pressure to fix quality-related issues compared with live streaming. If the video stream stalls or stops during a live event, viewers might miss an important winning goal or slam dunk. Content owners and service providers must fix whatever issue is impacting the video stream in real-time, which can be tricky, since the problem could be happening at any point of the workflow, from signal reception in the OB van to transcoding, encryption, packaging and distribution.

Problems Must be Stopped Early On: It’s not uncommon for service providers to be in the dark about OTT quality issues until they’ve

received complaints from their viewers. At that point, it’s possible the problem has gotten out of control and hard to fix. Service providers need to take a proactive approach to service assurance in the live OTT service environment, since viewers are depending on watching the event in real-time.

Why Centralized Monitoring is Best: Monitoring live OTT service is a must given the complexity of the video streaming environment and immediacy with which errors need to be fixed. A truly great monitoring system can bring efficiency to live OTT workflows, as well as ensure that service

providers are aware of quality of service and QoE issues.

Today, some monitoring systems only tackle one aspect of the workflow, or are capable of monitoring live services but not VOD or vice versa. Those solutions are not sufficient.

he A-B-C of data management describes the most commonly used processes to protect data. A-B-C spells Archive, Backup and Cloning, all of which are essential to cover all aspects of data protection and data preservation.

A is for Archive: All files and projects that have been completed should migrate to the long-term archive, where they are catalogued and preserved. For returning customers, for reference, and re-use, the archive provides the “Single Source of Truth”, because it is the one and only place to look for files. The Archive catalog provides browsing and visual presentation of media files with thumbnails and proxy clips.

Finding files is made easy by providing metadata fields and menus for searching and combined searching.

The metadata schema should be customized to fit the needs of the company and the workflow.

B is for Backup: For less time-critical, an automated backup is the way to go.

Depending on the requirements, that backup can go to disk, cloud or tape. If a file is deleted or corrupted, it can be found in the Backup index and a restore triggered.

The backup always replicates the present

production storage, i.e. files needed for dayto-day work. All files that have been finalized or delivered can and should migrate to the archive in order to keep the main production storage and the files residing on it at a reasonable number.

C is for Cloning: Time critical production storage needs to be cloned to a secondary volume. This serves as fail-over replacement for the primary production storage. Cloning is needed where there is no tolerance for the runtime of a restore. Cloning provides an identical copy or replication of a complete storage on a secondary storage device, which can then be used as fail-over for immediate data availability so production can continue within minutes. One of the copies must be stored off-site for maximum security.

A

ES67 aims to be an interoperability standard for high performance professional digital IP networking, including a synchronization mechanism, transport encoding formats and quality of service (QoS) provision for delivering audio data as well as connection management functions associated with audio delivery.

AES67 uses existing standard protocols and technology from the IEEE, IETF and others, defining how to use existing protocols as a system in an interoperable manner.

The technical scope of AES67 is on high performing networks which enable highquality (16 bit/48 kHz and higher), highcapacity (up to several hundred channels) and low-latency (less than 10 milliseconds) digital audio transport. The level of network performance required to meet these demands is typically available on local area networks and achievable on enterprise-scale networks.

Because IP protocols are readily carried over Ethernet networks, AES67 is also fully applicable to Ethernet networks of any size.

AES67 is expected to be useful for interoperability scenarios within broadcast, music production and post-production

facilities as well as for commercial audio applications including fixed and touring live sound reinforcement.

AES67 is not intended to be a solution on its own, but rather providing means for exchanging audio streams between areas with different networking solutions or technologies already in place. It can be expected that the various IP-based solutions will enhance their capabilities in order to adopt an AES67-compliant stream mode to facilitate inter-system interoperability.

The synchronization method chosen for AES67 is IEEE1588-2008 aka precision time protocol PTP. PTP by use of its best master clock algorithm BMCA is electing a so-called Grandmaster which will then distribute precise wall clock time to all the PTP nodes in the network which will then be so called slaves to this master.

For transport, AES67 is using IETF’s realtime protocol RTP and L16 or L24 (linear

PCM with 16 or 24 bits of resolution) as encoding types.

Regarding QoS, DiffServ is used

by AES67 which is supportive of all layer 3 manageable network switches nowadays. With this technology it’s assured that synchronization as well as audio packets in the network are always preferred against other traffic in the network.

For connection management, AES67 defines the use of the session description protocol SDP. As a simple method of distributing SDP information session announcement protocol SAP is mentioned as one possibility in the AES67 standard.

With AES67 for the first time there is a widely adopted standard for professional audio over IP (AoIP) which has the technical as well as adoption potential to become the successor of AES3 resp. AES/EBU and/or MADI aka AES10.

How to Improve Flexibility in Your Broadcast Facility

Better flexibility and functionality: We all wish that broadcast facilities were simpler, more efficient and easier to work in, but wouldn’t it be great if we could make all these improvements whilst making the space more functional, and with less hardware?

By adopting high performance IP KVM solutions, broadcast engineers can enhance functionality, improve scalability and increase cost savings to their existing workflows.

IP KVM turns a single user console into a portal to access all computers, none of which need to be in the same physical location as the screen and input device. In the broadcast control room, IP KVM allows physical computers to be moved to a secure server room or another location. This frees up valuable space in the gallery and eliminates excess noise and heat, allows preventative maintenance and increases flexibility.

There is a move by gallery control room

operators to include more HD and 4K screens on workstations allowing operators to manage multiple workflows, which from an ergonomic point of view means the removal of keyboard and mouse clutter on desks becomes even more important.

Configuration in seconds: Ensuring that suites are operating efficiently is critical in the post-production environment, as this means revenue. IP KVM technologies allow a facility to reconfigure suites at the press of a button or customize a series of suites to handle a specific production or regular client setup.

The idea of configuration has really caught on, giving facilities the option to roll out standard sets of interface equipment, monitors and audio and then re-purpose the suite in less than a second. One minute it could be NLE, then grading, CGI, VFX, audio and so on. What’s more, users can duplicate connections to multiple suites allowing

collaborative, rather than silo-based, workflows across large productions.

The user is at the center of all great technology deployments for creative industries, and there should be no lesser expectation when it comes to the choice of connectivity. If users have to spend time thinking about the connectivity, they aren’t spending time thinking about their return on investment. High performance KVM must be transparent to the user, and when control takes place, it must be fast and intuitive.

IP is here to stay: Adding IP KVM devices to an IP network is straight forward. This differs greatly from traditional direct-connect matrix setups where the cost of increasing the system by just one end point is significant, and needs additional equipment installed by skilled engineers.

Planning Your Way to a More Efficient Newsroom

ncreasing collaboration among different newsroom teams - video, digital, social, print, etc. - has become a hot issue in recent years as newsroom managers look for increased efficiency and better ways to control costs.

One potential solution that is often suggested is moving all teams onto a common platform capable of producing content for all formats. While this is an

understandable goal, it is also a difficult one - broadcast producers cannot give up their running orders; Web producers will not give up the specialized functions of their CMS; aggregating social media publishing for multiple sites in a single tool can mean giving up some of the richness the sites’ native platforms provide, and so on.

There is one area of newsroom workflow, however, where a consolidated approach can more easily produce real benefits... and without the anxiety of changing production systems: editorial planning.

Editorial planning is more or less the same regardless of the ultimate output format or formats for any single story.

n the present era where audience expectations continue to evolve, traditional television as we know it faces severe challenges unless it reinvents itself... once again.

Crowded marketplace: While the television has grown to become a mainstay in most households around the world, its reign in the living room is being challenged by the rise of OTT and mobile video platforms which are fundamentally changing the way people watch content. This has had profound impacts on audience viewing and spending habits.

While television broadcasters have been quick to adopt OTT and other VOD models, many have struggled to compete effectively against the native digital video platforms.

The most successful broadcasters are using online and mobile television to amplify their traditional offerings and to cater to the evolving demands of audiences and advertisers.

Remaining competitive in today’s landscape

demands more than just the newest technologies or the best content, but a strategy that addresses the varying demands of audiences around the world and across all age demographics.

Television’s new era: New technologies such as 5G mobile networks and AI are also offering possibilities for traditional television’s revival. With exceptional bandwidth and low latency, 5G enables innovation of video in multiple areas. Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) elevate the viewing experience to provide more immersive viewing offering audiences a greater degree of control over the entire experience.

Driving Satellite Innovation Martin Coleman, Executive Director, the Satcoms Innovation Group, considers the challenges facing the satellite networks, the innovative solutions on show, and the wider implications for the industry...

T

he satellite industry is facing a huge number of challenges right now, but at the same time it has a wealth of opportunity if those challenges can be effectively mitigated. On the one hand, much of its existing customer base is moving away from satellite. Nowhere is this more true than with broadcast, where we are seeing a global rise of Over-The-Top (OTT) video services. How can satellite compete in an increasingly connected world?

At the same time, we are seeing large LEO constellations being launched adding a vast number of new satellites into an already overcrowded space, which risks causing both further debris and wide-scale satellite interference. How do we overcome these challenges to ensure satellite remains the reliable and robust network it is today?

The Connected Consumer The everyday life of consumers has changed dramatically over recent years. One of the biggest themes is that consumers expect constant connectivity wherever they may be. Consumers (me included) really do get frustrated when the connection drops, even when they are hurtling across the country on a train or car, crossing the oceans on a boat or a plane or simply working away from the office.

The rise in OTT video, which is predicted to rise 35% in 2019 according to the Convergence Research Group, is a perfect example of that, feeding consumers with the content they want when and where they want it. You only need to spend an hour or so on a train to see that more and more people are catching up on the latest series on the commute to work, for example.

We are also seeing a rise in Internet of Things (IoT), with Statista forecasting the total number of devices to reach 27 billion by the end of this year and a whopping 75 billion by 2025.

All of this, far from being negative for the satellite industry, is actually great news.

What other technology can ensure constant connectivity, even on the move? Not forgetting that Internet of Things and high definition video are examples of extremely data-hungry applications, another area where satellite can help with huge amounts of available bandwidth. The impending LEO launches will further address those needs.

Congested Space The opportunity is definitely there for satellite, however, we still need to ensure that we are managing space well to ensure good connectivity and service at all times. One thing that is certain with today’s constantly connected consumer, there is no room for error.

We already have a massive problem with far too much debris in space. As this moves around, it puts all satellites at risk and another collision would of course cause further debris, making the problem worse still. We

need to get better at monitoring exactly what is happening and predicting collisions before they become a reality. And yet, the industry is about to launch huge quantities of new satellites up into space, before we have truly mastered tracking the existing objects.

Satellite interference also remains a problem, though thankfully somewhat diminished at this point in time. Once new LEO constellations are added to the mix, how will that affect interference? We don’t honestly know the answer yet but unless both constellation and carriers are well managed and monitored, it will likely impact services for many.

The Importance of Innovation The only way to ensure satellite truly thrives is to innovate. That means better tools for monitoring and detecting interference, an area where we have seen a lot of innovation over the past couple of years. New and better tools for tracking satellites and debris are now a must. There are a number of providers working to improve this area, what we really need is for them to work together for the greater good of the industry and the environment.

The other area where I see we could really make a difference to the efficiency and capacity of the hybrid of satellite and terrestrial networks is through integrating automation with Artificial Intelligence (AI).

AI is about using data and machine learning (ML) to teach a system certain automated tasks, prediction (through probability case evaluation) and error resolution. One thing the satellite industry is not short of is data, but

we need to use that data to reduce the cost of today’s network management by enabling much faster resolution of incidents. AI could help with detecting errors and orbit locations, but it can also go a step further with the right data, helping the industry predict what is likely to happen in these areas.
