Thesis Statement Our proposal focuses on offering potential experimental shelter and transportation solutions to users and communities intent on occupying areas prone to current and future sea level rise. Fundamental to this research is the concept of autonomous devices which design, through sensor and user data, highly customized and self-sustainable habitats through the utilization of harvesting localized materials for additive manufacturing. In this circumstance, the vehicle will serve as both the manufacturing generator as well as having the ability to intervene as a functional appendage with its built habitat.

Naturally, this habitat will create a disparate relationship between the car and the organic additive surfaces. As a result, context-specific augmented reality interfaces will provide an affinity between the two typologies.

Central to our proposal is the idea of the vehicle as a physical and functional generator. Physically, the vehicle will construct the habitat; while, functionally, it will extend its spatiality and functionality. This functional transformation will occur as the car intervenes by attaching to each space of the habitat and extends said space dimensionally and functionally.

With the booming economy development, people in China is seeking a better living evironment for therapeutic purpose. So that places with clean natural environment and high quality of medical facilities are required. By designing this certain project we actually want to def ine a gauidance system for these project sharing the same purpose. In the current situation of the shor tage of medical resources, the urgent need for a comprehensive evaluation and guidance system to lead the construction of new medical facilities and the completion of the existing health care institutions assessment. Innovatively introducing the concept of modularization to medical institutions is benenfit for the rapid construction and development of the industry, inorder to meet the needs from the society for such institutions and facilities. The project requires a set of medical care, nursing ,rehabilitation as one of the nursing and medical institutions, including a 400-beds high-end nursing home and a 150-beds for hospital.

The project is located close to a 4A level scenic ecological park, near to 312 National Road, with favorable geographical conditions, good ecological environment. It is planned to have a hospital and a health center in the site, it is a combination of hospital and assisted living center.

Concept of Assisted Living Unit Firstly, we can divide and analyze the target groups, then sum up and organize the groups according to the needs of different groups of people. Second, we can classify the group with the corresponding of medical, convalescence and other configurations. Besides, the environmental facilities will be hierarchical, modular at the same time. Thirdly, we can combine different medical, therapeutic facilities modular and get a certain number of product space units that can meet the needs of different groups of people. After research, from the psychological and physiological state of the evaluation system and medical facilities module, this can be applied to: 1. Aconstrction sample for similar medical facility especially the high-end convalescence institutions. 2. Abasis for the selection of the place of tratment for the patient population (each medical facility has been evaluated by the same evaluation system)

No matter how small it is, once a new building is settled, it will post a great influence on the environment and the people. Located in a big campus, the 200 sqm tiny teahouse was settled to bring a difference to the daily life of university students. By carefully arranging the paths around site as well as access to the Teahouse, I was able to make this small building to be a gateway to the beautiful lake and waterfront green space. Inside the Teahouse is a series of continuous platforms, allowing people to walk freely when looking out to the nature surrounding them. 30

The beautiful park in campus is an ideal place for students to relax. Yet most students prefer to walk around the park as the straight roads are more convenient than those serpentine pathways. The Teahouse encourages students to grab breakfast on the way to classroom, to enjoy a cup of coffee when there is no class, and most importantly, to step closer to the nature.

Several different walkways are planned to invite students to walk into or through the Teahouse - a lakeside path, a woodland promenade, and a bridge. On the other hand, the main interior space for teahouse was placed on the lake as a better spot to enjoy the scenery while other rooms of various functions were scattered around on site.

The main concern of this project is to deal with the relationship between the building and the landscape, and how to introduce the beautiful scenery – surface of the lake, lakeside pathway and grassland on the gentle slope – to interior space. Diversity of interior spaces is another design strategy. With different height and elevation of each space and the connections inbetween, sceneries are framed in different depth and proportions, changing with people’s movement.

The eastern culture is in a way mysterious, like the translucent cloth they make. In this flagship store of Chinese traditional costume, a couple of ver y cultural elements, the translucent cloth (Chiffon), Chinese wash painting, and timber frame structure, are reinterpreted and composited to be a building. Customers, thus, are able to experience the cohesive atmosphere created by both the architectural space, and the cloth they are shopping. 38

Phenomenal Transparency Traditional Chinese paintings represent the distance between elements like mountains, rivulet and trees by painting them in different brightness and level of detail. What if we overlap several space c o n t a i n i n g d i f f e re n t e l e m e n t s o n translucent sur faces, either indoor or outdoor? Could people feel a mysterious atmosphere formed by the vague image presented on the overlapped surfaces.

Multi-space Analysis Once a space is enclosure by translucent surface, elements from each side will be seen in a vague way. O rg a n i z i n g t h e s t o re s p a c e w i t h translucent sur faces would create s o m e i n t e re s t i n g a n d m y s t e r i o u s atmosphere. Objects such as people, products, wooden structure, and plants are passing through several layers of translucent surfaces before meeting customer’s eyes.

Location

Site Analysis

The site is located in Eindhoven, Holland, which is considered to be one of the centre of advance technology in Europe. Eindhoven is the fifth largest city in Holland while the best one in the field of technology. It has been the base area for E-research and development falicities of PHILIPS. And the site is right at eh 18 Septemberplein, a beautiful plaza, and is near to the railway station of Eindhoven and the famous Philips Stadion.

The site is located at the entrance of 18 Septemberplein, which is also the entrance of continuous commercial streets. The site, surrounded by a main street, is a triangle-shaped building lot. The PHILIPS building is just across the street.

The timber frame system is a reinterpretation of Chinese traditional wood structure. By reprocessing the relationship between columns, beams and floors, the height of each floor is adjustable based on the pathway underneath. Not only serving as structure, the slender wood columns also act as visual elements, vertical planters, or even clothing racks. The purpose is to bring the beauty of wood structure from backstage to frontstage, making it the leading actor of this architecture play.

The fluidity of the space allows customers to read and experience the building when shopping. It is, however, not straightforward either – any spots closeby are always interfered by elements like displaying cloth, layer of translucent glass or plants. The expected result is the visual extension in a small space – the mystery of space.

Treating architecture as a tool, is to reveal, ease, or solve social problems to meet demand of the public. In this studio project, voices from the residents is set to be the first priority, which is asking for proper public open spaces and convenient access to it. Architecture, then, should not only provide indoor space as a library, but also become an open space encouraging diverse activities to happen. 50

I believe that many problems deeply rooted in China are partly due to the large population, which is hard to change in a short period of time. But it does not mean architects can do nothing to address the problems.

The library locates in the old HUPO community in Hefei city. Like many other old communities in China, HUPO is densely populated with large groups of senior and young residents. After visiting the neighbourhood, I realized that both groups currently have very limited spaces for their daily activities like dancing and roller skating. Sitting at the center of the community, the new community librar y should take the challenge to balance the interior building space and the great demand of public space.

The key of the design is a combination of typical housing units and a three-dimensional arrayed geometry deformed from cutting and folding a flat surface. After the combination, we could find out many interesting and unusual spaces, like, triangle, rhombus and trapezoid. The process of developing the project is to functionalize them and make them meaningful, turning the pure geometry into an comprehensive architecture system. 62

The main interior spaces are placed between two geometric forms, and they shape the interior spaces from different degrees. In the north part, the gap is managed in to passage spaces. And mostly, room plan are adapted to meet the functional requirements like kitchens and bathrooms. The geometric form has greater influence on the south faรงade, a pitch roof shape of frame is formed in the living room; the balconies are interlaced at different floors; the sloping walls are used as bookshelves and space for plants.
