City Creates Sample Pattern of Downtown Brick Zeeland’s downtown snowmelt project Phase I is in full swing as contractors blocked off Main Street from Centennial to Maple Street last week. Crews have removed portions of the road way and are installing underground conduits for utilities, sprinkling, and future use, along with new underground storm sewer lines. As the city prepares for the next step in the project a test pattern for the bricks that will be installed in the sidewalk has been prepared on the vacant lot that the city owns on Cherry Street directly west of the former medical building. “We had some issues with quality of work and materials that were used on the library/alley project last year and decided that we would create a test pattern this year before the bricks are installed. We encourage people to check it them out,” stated Assistant City Manager Kevin Plockmeyer. Plockmeyer also noted that the areas around the light and banner poles, where they plant flowers, will be more impeded by “hand hold” than were in the past. “As you recall, we are installing additional conduit for the project in the case we want to install such things as a sound system or other utilities in the future. To gain access to this conduit, and the current electrical lines, there will be hand holes installed around the pole bases. We are working with Don’s Flowers on what type of flowers we may need to utilize in the future for this area,” he said. Phase I of the Downtown Snowmelt Project includes the installation of snowmelt in the sidewalks along Main from Church to east of Maple to include Community Restaurant, 421 E. Main, along with some street beautification items – i.e., bumpouts, street lighting, and planters. Currently the road surface from Centennial to Maple has been removed, a new storm sewer system has been installed on the north side of the street and electrical conduits are being installed. Phase II of the Downtown Snowmelt Project will occur during the 2024 construction season and will include the portion of Main from Church to State streets.

Zeelmania Returns To Downtown Zeeland

Zeeland Festivals kicked off its Monday night Zeelmania event Monday evening July 10 with a “Color Run” and will run Mondays through July 31. From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. attendees can enjoy live performances, food trucks, music, balloon art, petting zoo, and more geared to young children in the community. “We kicked the night off with our 6th annual color explosion located at the corner of Elm and Main Street in downtown Zeeland. We asked participants to wear white and something that can get dirty. The color explosion was made out of color powder similar to events such as the “Color Run.” It is non-toxic and does not stain. What a perfect way to let the kids get dirty and let us manage the mess,” said Lynette Pham. more! The events continue each Monday night in July with a special theme.
