District 126 Bids Farewell to the Class of 2014 NT@ZB GRADUATION June 5 – 6:30 p.m.

The graduation ceremony for the Class of 2014 will be Thursday, June 5, 2014, at 6:30 p.m. Weather permitting, the ceremony will take place on the New Tech athletic field.

In case of inclement weather, the program will be held in the Cafetorium.

Guest seating begins at 5:00 p.m. and the ceremony starts at 6:20 p.m. The academic processional will begin promptly at 6:30 p.m.

S E N I O R S YEAR END EVENTS For Seniors and Parents BACCALAUREATE – Sunday, May 18 Baccalaureate is a special non-denominational tradition in our community and is an opportunity for the faith community to honor and bless our graduates. Baccalaureate will be held on Sunday, May 18 starting at 3:00 p.m. at North Point Christian Church located at 900 Lewis Avenue, Winthrop Harbor. Participating graduates need to meet at 2:00 p.m.

Book Return Deadlines The Bookstore will be open for book returns from 7:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. The last day for seniors to return textbooks to the bookstore will be on Friday, May 30 until 3:00 p.m. All other students must return all textbooks by 3:00 p.m. Thursday, June 5. The replacement cost of any textbook not returned on June 5 will be charged to the student’s account.

TI-84 PLUS GRAPHING CALCULATOR REQUIRED FOR ALL MATH STUDENTS When math teachers were asked what the one thing they wished every parent knew, they all said, “Every student needs a calculator to be successful.” Texas Instruments graphing calculator will be used in all math courses. This calculator is approved for use on the PSAE, ACT, SAT and AP tests. All TI-83 and TI-84 models are acceptable, and are usually sold by Office Depot, Office Max, Staples, Target, Walmart, etc. Prices range from $90 to $120 per calculator. Lower prices may be available online.

We understand the significant investment that this is; however, it is critical to students’ academic success.

Freshmen and transfer students are required to submit a completed high school physical form and proof of immunization prior to schedule pick-up on August 19, 20, and 21. Students who do not complete these requirements will not be able to pick-up their schedule or attend school until these requirements are met. Please call the ZBTHS Health Office if you have any questions at 847-731-9336 or 9335, if you have a question regarding this deadline.

Appropriate physical forms were mailed to freshman homes in January and are also available in the schools’ Health Services and Student Services Offices or online at www.zbths.org.

Letters will be sent to students (all grades) who need a TetanusDiphtheria (Tdap) Booster before registration.

The following would be a full description of what is required for all students in high school:  Diptheria, Pertussis, Tetanus: 3 or more doses of DTP/DtaP, with the last dose qualifying as a booster and received on or after the 4th birthday. Beginning school year 2012-2013, any student entering 6th or 9th grade is required to show proof of receiving one dose of Tdap (defined as tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis) vaccine regardless of the interval since the last DTaP, DT, or Td dose.  Polio: 3 doses or more of Polio with the last dose qualifying as a booster and received on or after the 4th birthday  Measles: 2 doses: the first dose received on or after the 1st birthday; second dose no less than 28 days later (usually given as MMR)  Mumps: 1 dose received on or after the 1st birthday (usually given as MMR)  Rubella: 1 dose received on or after the 1st birthday (usually given as MMR)  Hepatitis: 3 doses received at proper intervals  Chicken Pox: For school year 2013-2014, a varicella immunization is required for students entering preschool through 10th grade or physician’s statement verifying disease history, or laboratory evidence of varicella immunity.

Please schedule your physical appointment for early summer to ensure you meet the schedule pick-up deadline. A copy of the freshman school physical may be used as the required athletic physical for those desiring to participate in a sport their freshman year.

District 126 freshmen through seniors will report to Zion-Benton Township High School to pick-up schedules and pay fees on these days. Students must have previously registered in order to participate in schedule pick-up on August 19, 20, or 21. If you become aware of any new families who move into the district with high school students, please encourage them to call Students Services, 847-731-9352, to schedule an appointment with a counselor.

Important Checklist for Schedule Pick-up:

DRIVER EDUCATION FEE The 2014-15 Driver Education fee is $275. An additional $20 driving permit fee, payable to the State of Illinois, will be collected by the instructor when class begins. Note: although the classroom portion of Driver Education is a graduation requirement, students are not required to take the behind-the-wheel portion of this class.

PARKING STICKERS Eligible juniors and seniors may purchase, after deans’ approval, 2014-15 school year parking stickers for $100. Students may “apply” for Deans’ approval at schedule pick-up in August.

Qualifications are a “C” average the previous semester with no major discipline sanctions, and no prior referrals for driving abuses. All prior year fees must be paid in full in order to purchase a sticker.

 Physical Examination - All incoming freshmen and students new to the district must have a completed physical prior to schedule pick-up on August 19, 20, or 21. See page three for further details.  Proof of Residency – All students are required to bring two forms of proof of residency when they come to pick-up their schedules and pay fees.  School Fees – Parents should be prepared to pay all appropriate school fees during schedule pick-up, including outstanding fees from prior years.

Additional details on schedule pick-up will be publicized in the August issue of the Beeline (mailed to your home) and in the Zion-Benton News. Please Note: The first day of school for freshmen is Tuesday, August 26. ZBTHS freshmen hours are 7:50 until 11:30 a.m., and NT@ZB freshmen hours are 7:30 until 11:10 a.m. Wednesday, August 27 is the first full day for all students.

DISTRICT 126 STUDENTS CELEBRATED FOR THEIR GRIT

ILLINOIS PILOTS PARCC ASSESSMENT

Students from Zion-Benton Township High School and New Tech High @ Zion-Benton East were the first groups to be recognized by their teachers for possessing GRIT. GRIT has many characteristics. It is the quality of completing a task with determination. It is also overcoming difficulty and pushing through despite adversity. It is working hard, sacrificing, and being dedicated. The celebrations consisted of a student breakfast, an explanation of grit and why they were selected, and then the presentation of certificates and notes from nominating teachers. Each month hereafter, students will be nominated by teachers from each department and will be honored with a similar celebration.

School districts across the State of Illinois will be participating in field tests of assessments developed by the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC).

PARCC assessments are scheduled to replace Illinois’ current required assessments, ISAT and PSAE, in 2015. Students who have been randomly selected by the state, and their parents, will be notified by mail if the state has selected them to participate in the field tests, which will occur during the school day in April. Some students have been selected to participate in a paper version of the assessment, while others have been selected to participate in an online version of the assessment.

Selected students may be experiencing a single component of the assessments, while other students may be experiencing multiple components.

State Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Chris Koch, indicates that “This is really a ‘test of the test’ to see how well it works and whether we need to make any adjustments before students take the actual PARCC exams in the 2014-15 school year. This is also a chance to make sure that students can use their schools’ tablets, laptops, and desktop computers to take the tests and learn of any issues . . . .”

Fourteen of the 17 states that belong to the PARCC consortium and the District of Columbia have their school districts participating in the field test process.

According to PARCC’s website, “Collectively the states in PARCC educate about 22 million students.

The PARCC states include: Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, District of Columbia, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New Jersey, New Mexico,New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Tennessee.”

NOTIFICATION TO PARENTS/GUARDIANS REGARDING TEEN DATING VIOLENCE At our schools, teen dating violence is unacceptable. We are committed to providing our students with a school environment where they can learn free from worries about school violence. Students are advised of School Board policy, 7:185, Teen Dating Violence Prohibited, which is a component of the District’s anti-bullying program.

Research has shown that teen dating violence can form lifelong, unhealthy habits during young adults’ formative years. Educating parents/guardians, students, and staff about teen dating violence can help us identify incidents of teen dating violence at school or school-related activities. The Board’s policy states that teen dating violence occurs whenever a student uses or threatens to use physical, mental, or emotional abuse to control an individual in the dating relationship, or uses or threatens to use sexual violence in the dating relationship.

Students in grades 9 through 12 will receive age-appropriate instruction on teen dating violence including its warning signs and prevention. School staff will also receive training on handling the signs and incidents of teen dating violence. Staff members are to respond immediately and with compassion to a student who reports teen dating violence. Staff will determine after evaluating the situation if an immediate referral to a counselor, social worker, or administrator is needed and will facilitate a contact with the appropriate personnel. Staff members have been asked to intervene immediately to stop incidents of teen dating violence occurring at school. They will proceed under the District’s procedures for responding to incidences of bullying and school violence.

Below are some warning signs that your child may be involved in teen dating violence:  Name-calling and put-downs. Does one individual in the relationship call the other person names? Does he or she use insults to put the other person down?  Extreme Jealousy. Does one individual in the relationship act incredibly jealous when the other talks to peers? Does one person accuse the other of flirting even when it’s innocent conversation?  Making Excuses. Does one individual in the relationship make excuses for the other? Does he or she have to apologize for the other person’s behavior?  Canceling or changing plans. Does one individual cancel plans often, and at the last minute? Do the reasons make sense or sound untrue?  Monitoring. Does one person call, text message, or check up on the other constantly? Does he or she demand to know the other person’s plans or with whom the other person was with?  Uncontrolled Anger. Have you seen one individual lose his or her temper? Does he or she throw things – or break things – when angry? Does one person in the relationship worry a lot about upsetting the other?  Isolation. Has one individual in the relationship given up spending time with friends? Has that individual stopped doing activities that used to be important?  Dramatic Changes. Have either of the individuals in the relationship had appearance changes? Has he or she lost or gained weight? Have his or her grades dropped? Does he or she seem depressed?  Injuries. Does one person in the relationship have unexplained injuries, or does he or she give explanations that don’t make sense?  Quick Progression. Did the relationship get serious very quickly?

These signs do not necessarily mean that your child is involved in teen dating violence, but, if present, talk to your child about teen dating violence.

WAY TO GO ZEE BEES!!!

Interact Service Club collected 57 units of blood during their recent Blood Drive.

Key Club collected 154 units of blood during their recent Blood Drive.

NJROTC Rifle Team took first place in the Navy National Championships. The Zee Bees have won the National Championship for the third time in eleven years and tied for the honor last year.

NJROTC Drill Team wins Area Three (State) Championship for fifth year in a row with numerous cadets receiving first place in their competitions.

Brian Cashin qualified for the National History Bee to be held in Washington, D.C. in April.

Milik Yarbrough exceeded the all Lake County record for career points in basketball.

Zee Bee Cheerleaders finished 14th in state competitions.

Amy Hollingshead qualified for state competitions in Girls Bowling by averaging a 206 in a six game series.

Mark Miller, Anthony Munoz, and Nick Whitehead qualified for state competition in Wrestling.
