Through the pages of this brochure we narrated and presented our experiences, knowledge and outcomes of the realized activities within the ACES project COLLAGES OF DIVERSE TALENTS AND YOUNG LIVES and eTwinning project OUR DIVERSITY IN HARMONY.

CHALLENGE, RESPONSIBILITY, OPORTUNITY, NEW EXPERIENCES New challenges and opportunities after we won the battle - to be part of the Academy of Central European Schools ACES 2013-14 cycle on "Me and the others: Discovering diversity with in around me." Out of 220 applica-

tions from 513 schools, application for our project "collage of different talent and young lives" with the partner school 22SOU Georgi Rakovsky - Sofia, Bulgaria was approved.

About aces

АЦЕС—Acedemy of central European school http://www.aces.or.at aces offers opportunities for young people from Central and South Eastern Europe to develop friendship across borders and to take part actively in international school projects.

The programme supports the establishment of a Central European network of schools. The aim is to foster dialogue and cooperation of young people and to create a sustainable network of shared knowledge, mutual learning and innovation. The initiative is supported by the Ministries in charge of Education of all 15 participating countries.

With a yearly contest for school partnership projects aces encourages pupils and teachers to engage in intercultural exchange and work jointly on the overall topic of the respective aces cycle. aces was founded in 2006 by ERSTE Foundation in cooperation with Interkulturelles Zentrum (Vienna, Austria). In 2009, VČELÍ DOM (Bratislava, Slovak Republic) joined in the partnership. The aces school network seeks to enhance the active partici- pation of young people and teachers in exchange processes and international cooperation.

The partner countries Currently 15 partner countries from Central and South Eastern Europe are involved in the network: Albania, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Kosovo, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Slovak Republic and Slovenia.

the Philosophy The background of aces is the belief of its initiators that education essentially contributes to the processes of European integration and citizenship building. The vision of aces is to create a common space for learning from each other and with each other. Be inspired, take part in shaping the future of Europe!

European citizenship aces supports innovative ways of teaching and learning in Central Europe in order to contribute to the process of European integration and the promotion of European Citizenship. Schools can play an important role in opening up the perspectives of young people beyond the borders of their own country towards a common Europe, based on joint values like the state of law, personal freedom and human rights.

Learning for tomorrow aces offers concrete possibilities to take part actively and to discuss European values and topics with peers from abroad. Young people are supported in establishing personal contacts, developing friendship across borders and becoming acquainted with varying perspectives and different ways of thinking. Besides stimulating the practical use of foreign languages and the motivation to learn even new ones (e.g. ―neighbourhood languages‖), aces welcomes the use of modern communication technologies.

Schools as learning organisations aces addresses schools with their potential for developing educational quality and innovation. ―Learning schools‖ get inspiration by comparing themselves with others from abroad: different models of school management, the respective role of leadership, or unfamiliar approaches and new methods for the classroom may serve as valuable resources for the own development. Moreover, the ―European dimension‖ exceeds the limited national tradition of education, it raises the awareness for the diversity of positions and attitudes and deepens the understanding of the complexity of Europe and the globalised world.

About e-Twinning

eTwinning—The community for schools in Europe http://www.etwinning.net eTwinning offers a platform for staff (teachers, head teachers, librarians, etc.), working in a school in one of the European countries involved, to communicate, collaborate, develop projects, share and, in short, feel and be part of the most exciting learning community in Europe.

The eTwinning action promotes school collaboration in Europe through the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) by providing support, tools and services for schools.

THE IDEA OF OUR PROJECT

SUMMARY Our Project endorses children from various social backgrounds and standing, from diverse ethnic, religious and national groups. By bringing them together, it presents their diverse talents and induces common experiences that break stereotypical images of others and clichés about themselves. Its idea is to stimulate critical thinking and open-mindedness to new people and different world views, encourage empathy to others’ feelings, and respect to cultural pluralism inside and outside the classroom. The ultimate inspiration is to help adolescents understand diversity as a generator of knowledge and creative capacities in modern society.

Project idea Our Project aims to challenge established stereotypes in young minds, encourage students to look beyond the fixed, oversimplified images of social, ethnic and national groups, and discover both aspects of differences and similarities in the complex identities of others and themselves. The overall goal is to bring the intercultural dimensions in the classroom by helping students overcome potential fear of difference and embrace diversity as instrumental for competence development, innovation and peaceful coexistence in today’s world. The Project is well integrated in the theme of aces cycle “I and the Others: Discovering diversity around and within me” as it contributes to the mythbusting of identity prejudices and the reconceptualization of the other and oneself, and promotes understanding diversity as a central value in Human Rights policy. Our specific focus is the classroom of today and the school of tomorrow. We explore differences and similarities in our educational systems, curricula, school and out-of-school activities, and engage children’s diverse talents in the fields of art, music, dance and analytical thinking to encourage them to design the diverse and yet united Classroom of Tomorrow. The Project idea is adjusted to the interests of adolescents by choosing art as the key tool of expression and research. It is topical in the context of rising nationalistic sentiments of uniqueness in our two neighbour countries, and Macedonia’s expected accession to the EU.

ACTIVITIES FOR PROMOTION OF OUR PROJECT

PRESENTATION OF THE PROJECT BEFORE STUDENTS AND TEACHERS IN OUR SCHOOLS In Karbinci, students prepared a school-panel for our project, and designed a promotional brochure and poster.

The students realised an activity called "My personal characteristic" to familiarise their peers and teachers with the project‘s objectives and planned layout. Part of the ACES student team gave a project presentation to the mayor of Karbinci municipality. In Sofia, posters were put up to invite students to our project and acquaint them with ACES, its aims, and our Macedonian partner-school.

INSPIRATION LIKE OCEAN

ACES Kick-off meeting was held in Bucharest, Romania on 01-04.10.2013 and was attended by one teacher and student of 105 schools whose projects were approved . Entrance in the wonderful world of ACES - the world of diversity that offers opportunities for cross- border school projects focused on European topics, networking schools, including institutional collaborations to advance the process of European integration and the development of European citizenship.

The meeting was attended by the teacher and student JBinova Silvana Maria Roma from Macedonia and Svetla Balucova teacher and student Maria Mira Dimitrova from Bulgaria. For the first time the partners met eachother.

Meetings, workshops, workshops, games, entertainment, inspiration, motivation - in mixed teams WE STUDIED UNITED IN DIVERSITY . We got crowded with luggage - motivation , inspiration , challenge.

VIDEO CONFERENCE ‗‘ME TOO‘‘

MY UNIQUE CHARACTERISTIC As a an introduction to the first audio-video conference named ME TOO students were directed to think about a own characteristic that they considered to be unique for them.

Video conference ME TOO (adopted activity from Discovering Diversity teachers' pack written and compiled by Mark Taylor) was realized on 10.25.2013 with the help of Skype.

Despite the disadvantages of Information Technology (meeting was held with only audio contact), it was a wonderful experience to share differences and similarities with students from Bulgaria, Macedonia, Poland and Italy.

From 01-03.11.2013 Macedonian students had the pleasure to host their partners from Sofija .

The agenda was full - to start with making the collage, to present diverse talents, to meet young people lives.

Team of teachers from elementary school Dame Gruev of s.Erdzhelija were curious to meet our partners in Bulgaria.

The activities of the first day were aimed to present schools and states, to meet and bring together students, to form mixed teams, to motivate them to present their talents through play .

POEM ABOUT OUR COLLAGE This days I heard one story about students from two different countries Macedonia and Bulgaria.

They are from different countries, from various social backgrounds and standing, from diverse ethnic, religious and national groups.

And, they have to do common project about DIVERSITY OF THEIR TALENTS AND YOUNG LIVES. Some of them are good in singing Some of them are good in playing piano Some of them like playing the guitar Some of them are good in dancing Some of them are good in mathematic Some of them are good in English Some of them are good in art Some of them are good in sport Some of them are afraid of spiders Some of them are afraid of speaking English Some of them like walking on the rain Some of them like reading the books Some of them are lazy Some of them are ambitious Some of them are shy Some of them like dogs We are so diverse. ACES PROJECT MEETING 1

ACES project meeting in Karbinci, MK—Day 1

To enrich our knowledge of each other, the Bulgarian team presented the results of a survey called ―Have you met Macedonia in person? Then share your experience with us!‖ The survey was conducted amongst students from the 8th, 9th and 11th grades of 22 SOU ―Georgi Rakovski‖ in October 2013. As it turned out, very few students had visited their neighbourcountry Macedonia before. However, those who had done so, cherished warm memories from their stay there and sent their love to our Macedonian ACES partner-school.

With the assistance of their art teacher, Daniela Petkova, students from the 8th and 9th grades of 22 SOU, Sofia, had prepared an artful collection of postcards—colourful greetings which they sent to their Macedonian peers in Karbinci. Although beyond the ACES age limit for participants, students from the 12th grade enthusiastically joined in the preliminary preparations for our trip to OU ―Straso Pindzur‖, MK, and insisted on signing the postcards.

BG SURVEY

―Have you met Macedonia in person?

Then share your experience with us!‖ ―When I was young, I visited Macedonia with my family. I don‘t remember much from the journey but my parents told me that the culture there is very similar to the Bulgarian one. The traditions are very similar too. What I remember from Macedonia is the old quarters of Skopje—the small, charming, old streets, with their antique shops. I loved that place. I also remember the mountains and the colourful forests - they were so beautiful! I have seen pictures of Ohrid and Ohrid Lake, but I have never been there. I would love to visit them and Macedonia in general once again and refresh my memories.‖ Yana, 9th grade I went to Macedonia four years ago with my team. We had a competition there. We had a great time! … Even though it was snowy, we went for a walk round Ohrid. For me, it was nothing different from the nature, the streets, the landmarks we have in our country. The thing that impressed me was the restaurant where we had lunch. It was like an aristocratic house; the waiters were dressed in suits, the food was really delicious and we felt like rich people. Macedonia is nice and not so different from Bulgaria; I enjoyed being there very much...

Alexandra, 9th grade My great-great-grandfather‘s roots are from Macedonia and he had a family there. This is why my father used to spend every summer with his grandparents there… When I was six years old, my grandma surprised me with a trip to Macedonia. When we arrived in Skopje, we booked in an old hotel that was really vintage. .. We visited museums and ate traditional Macedonian food. I also met a lot of attractive boys. On our third day, my grandma bought me a beautiful porcelain doll that I will cherish for life. I remember I watched how it was being made which was really interesting and inventive… Tony, 9th grade

ACES project meeting in Karbinci, MK—Day 2 We started the second day full of energy and hunger for new experiences in DIVERSITIES AND SIMILARITIES. We started with the songs while we were driving to our final destination. It was Vrteska mountain house where the main activities were planned, but casually we visited archaeological site of early Christian period Bargala located 10km from the school and the Church of St. Petka in the village Kaluzlija considered a special place with spiritual power in the region . We enjoy the quiet autumn landscapes and picturesque natura under Plackovica region . Along the way briefly we visited local villages where live Turkish population .

20 ANSWERS WHO AM I? When we are looking at diversity, we reflect on others. Intercultural learning is about looking at the other, the different and the diverse, but we can only really see the other, when we first look at the self.

It is essential for a person to be aware about themselves in order to learn from others, other personal cultures and not only nationalities.

That is why we realized Workshop DISCOVER YOURSELF . We used methods from Understanding Youth –Exploring Identity and it‘s Role publication by SALTO-YOUTH Cultural Diversity Resource Centre.

Students filled the worksheet ―20 answers Who am I‖ and letter we arranged the answers by web service for creating words cloud – www.tagul.com. The outcome from ―twenty answers‖ are presented on this two pages.

GOALS AND DESIRES During the Workshop DISCOVER YOURSELF with methods from Understanding Youth –Exploring Identity and it‘s Role publication by SALTO-YOUTH Cultural Diversity Resource Centre, students learned about The diversity Iceberg model and The circle of self perception and outsider perception. They learned that identity is not static, not just something that we develop until a certain moment and then remains hidden and fixed, but identity is changing and developing in all the phases of their lives.

We used the method ―Goals and Desires‖ so as to foster reflections and discussions on the students future and how they can ground their future development into their current identity to ensure a coherent development.

OPINION SCALE Activity OPINION SCALE is adapted from Discovering Diversity teachers' pack from Mark Taylor.

The aim of this activity was to induce students to reflect on their own opinion and at the same time to encourage them to ask about others opinions. First, through brainstorming in each school we encourage students to formulate statements (about which they want to ask others). We selected 16 statements.

Then, in each school, the students were asked to show what they think about each of the statements - by standing at different points along the line noted with 0%, 10%,‌, 100% according how much they agree with the statement.

Some students reflected their opinion by Paper copy survey and some by on line survey on Survey Monkey.

Here are the results. We compared them, country to country.

We have watched WHOSE IS THIS SONG? - a documentary film by Adela Peeva.

In her search for the true origins of a haunting melody, the filmmaker travels to Turkey, Greece, Macedonia, Albania, Bosnia, Serbia and Bulgaria. The trip is filled with humor, suspense, tragedy and surprise as each country's citizens passionately claim the song to be their own and can even furnish elaborate histories for its origins. The tune emerges again and again in different forms: as a love song, a religious hymn, a revolutionary anthem, and even a military march. The powerful emotions and stubborn nationalism raised by one song seem at times comical and other times, eerily telling. LOOKING FORWARD TO REUNION

ACES PROJECT MEETING IN SOFIA, BG Meanwhile, the 14th of February was approaching and so was our second project meeting in Sofia, Bulgaria. We all grew impatient to reunite and take our diversity experience of difference and similarity to a new, even more exciting level.

Preparing for our meeting, the Bulgarian partner-school uploaded a quiz on our Facebook site to draw students‘ attention to another type of diversity—DIVERSITY IN NATURE...What bird is the symbol of Sofia?

But though seen by 40 students, no one got the answer correct: No. 4 - the GREAT TITMOUSE! ...We also uploaded ―A Bulgarian Rose‖, a popular and much beloved Bulgarian welcoming song to learn, as well as a collage of the diverse landmarks of ancient and modern architecture which we were to see in Sofia TOGETHER.

We started Day1 with a Workshop "Sweet Diversity" by decorating cupcakes with Chrisie Christova, student at the Bulgarian Academy of Arts, and Kremena-Velina Krasteva, design student at the University of Forestry, Sofia. As alumni of 22 SOU they volunteered to help us discover the art and beauty of diversity in every small detail—and crumble—around us.

In the afternoon we went to the Bridge of Love—one of Sofia‘s young people‘s favourite places to meet and date.

All of us have dreams—about our future, about our lives, about friendship and love… So we made wishes, tied them to balloons of gorgeously diverse colours and let them fly free in the sky …

We hope that these wishes of ours will come true!

We also grabbed the opportunity to explore Sofia from diverse perspectives and get a ride on the city‘s beautiful new underground .

In the evening our joint Bulgarian and Macedonian ACES group was invited to further investigate the many different forms of sounds and motions in our world. Together we took part in the ―Diversity of Rhythms‖ Workshop and got introduced to the flair of dancing in far-away South and Central America. We made our first steps into the Salsa and the Samba, and an attempt to do some hiphop, too!

Initially rather shy and humble, we quickly took a liking to those exuberant rhythms and did not want them to stop!

We would like to say THANK YOU to our coach, Mr Plamen Panayotov, Director of the ―Mirrors‖ Dance Club, Sofia. He did it FOR US—and all for free.

ACES PROJECT MEETING IN SOFIA, BG –DAY 2 Our second day began with a cheerful musical round performed in a bouquet of languages, thus celebrating the rich dimensions of diversity of modern European cultures. Our DIVERSITY SONG, ―Frère Jacques‖, is a popular French nursery rhyme and one of the most widely known songs in the world. We sang it in the languages taught at our schools—English, French, German, Spanish, Russian, and of course, Bulgarian and Macedonian.

DIVERSITIES, DIVERSITIES...

ACES PROJECT MEETING IN BG, DAY 2—continued Our next workshop was called ―Euro-rail a la carte‖ and was inspired by ACES Methodological Kit ―Diversity Revisited‖, adapted from the exercise ―Euro-rail á la carte‖ of the Education Pack ―all different - all equal‖, Directorate of Youth and Sport, Council of Europe, 2nd edition.

Here our participants were expected to explore the construction of images of persons/groups and the construction of prejudice and stereotypes. What makes us choose the people we want to communicate with or turn our back to? Is it personal experience or are these subconsciously internalized images from friends, family, the mass media or learned in the street? How do we justify our choices to embrace or discriminate people we do not even know and meet for the first time?

To organize the workshops for Day 2, the ACES team of 22 SOU reached out to young NGO members and volunteers such as Rostislav Dimitrov, volunteer for the ―Future Now‖ Community Centre, Sofia, and Katerina Mircheva, doctoral student at the Technical University, Sofia. We were proud with the outcome of our ―Euro Train‖ workshop: our mixed BG-MK teams readily invited a HIV positive person and a Syrian refugee to their compartment, but were unwilling to accept the company of an extreme nationalist.

―Never again! The Holocaust and Us!‖ was the title of Katerina Mircheva‘s talk dedicated to the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, 27th January. It was a reminder that diversity could assume problematic and even disastrous dimensions if politically or ideologically mishandled and abused. There was silence when Katja confronted us with the faces of victims standing behind the numbers of 6 million Jews and 1 million Roma, amongst whom many children, who had been intentionally turned into victims of a horrific genocide during the Second World War because of their otherness. ―Most of the people witnessing the Holocaust did nothing! Would you and me be like them? Evil is dangerous; yet even more dangerous are ―good‖ people doing nothing!‖ warned Katja, appealing for an active sense of tolerance and civil conscience.

An equally problematic way of dealing with diversity was addressed when our BG-MK team met actress Alexandra Lopez starring in the TV sequel ―The Tree of Life‖ as Azra Altin—a young Turkish girl living in early-20th-century Bulgaria. Although western educated and dreaming of a medical career, Azra was blatantly confronted with her family‘s disapproval to let her follow the choice of her heart and marry a Bulgarian officer. ―What Got Love to Do with It‖ was a film presentation that put forth many difficult questions about gender, religious and ethnic issues in a multicultural society whose answers are never simple. However, what impressed our students most was the— though staged—physical abuse /a slap on the face/ of Azra, respectively actress Alexandra Lopez. Clearly, none of us saw violence as a conflict-resolution opportunity. Eventually students queued for a photo with Alexandra for a keepsake. Later, students queued to take a picture with Alexandra .

ACES PROJECT MEETING IN BG, DAY 2—continued The highlight of our Sofia meeting was the workshop ―Collages of Diverse Talents and Young Lives‖ as here we let our fantasy flow free to express ourselves and our perceptions of the world around us. We combined paint, yarn, ribbon, beads, and ink to visualize in an artist way our deepest feelings and thoughts, and we put both heart and skills to construct colourful images of what we consider LOVE, FRIENDSHIP, FAMILY, DREAMS, ENVIRONMENT, LOCAL COMMUNITY, ART, and THE UNIVERSE. And most importantly, we had a TERRIFIC TIME!

CELEBRATING FREINDSHIP AND DIVERSITY

CELEBRATING SPRING TOGETHER

Although our ACES Project was slowly drawing to its end, we continued collaborating and keeping our friendship alive —beyond the border distances. In March Bulgarians celebrate Baba Marta /Granny Marta/ - a traditional spring holiday when they wear white-red ribbons on their wrists in the hope of good health and luck! This year the students of 22SOU prepared special friendship token /martenitsi/ for their Macedonian peers to share their anticipation of a joyful revival of Nature. …‖Hello, dear friends! Today in Bulgaria we celebrate Baba Marta. Bulgarians respect Baba Marta highly. On 1th March we give relatives and friends a martenitsa-a red and white tassel-to bring health and happiness. We put it on our clothes or wrists and wish each other health and happiness.

This is an ancient Bulgarian tradition, most probably more than a thousand years old, which symbolizes the end of winter and the coming of spring. We keep our martenitsas on until the first storks and swallows arrive or the first cuckoos call. Then we take our martenitsas off and tie them to a tree that is in blossom.‖ /Maria-Mira, 22 SOU, BG/
