It is particularly focused upon ensuring that its range of products and resources are specifically focused upon the fundamental characteristics of true play based, open-ended early childhood best practice.

I am consulting with Zart Art to ensure that its products in the early childhood and early years of primary play based curriculum provide teachers with a wide range of open-ended materials and resources that empower children to explore, experiment, investigate, create, extend, build upon and develop interests, experiences and skills. This provides early childhood educators with endless opportunities to respond to and extend upon children’s interests and skills.

Given the nature of the products, their open-ended, creative and non closed and non stencil type

orientation, the wide range of materials will provide educators with an endless selection to choose from.

These will continue to meet the requirements of Framework expectations of being culturally and individually responsive, will enable children to explore their own interests and enable children to explore their world and express themselves.

This is an exciting and innovative stage in the supply of products for young children in education where early childhood education has finally come of age and specialization and acknowledgment that the uniqueness and importance of the early childhood years requires unique specialization in products and resources.

MIXING PLASTER: Add water into a plastic container. Sprinkle the powder onto the surface of the water. DO NOT STIR YET. Keep adding powder until the “hill” which forms in the centre of the water ceases to sink under the surface. This is the correct proportion of water to plaster. Wait until all of this “hill” is dampened by the water seeping up. Stir the mixture carefully in such a way that air is not trapped. When the mixture is ready, lift the container and gently bang it down onto the bench or floor a few times to force any air bubbles upwards. It should now be ready for use.

Pour into clay or plastic mould until set.

Why is ART important in Early Childhood?

Young children learn through play. Art is an important part of play. Children feel a sense of emotional satisfaction when they are involved in making art, whether they are modelling with clay, drawing with crayons, or making a collage from recycled scraps.

This satisfaction comes from the control children have over the materials they use and the autonomy they have in the decisions they make. Deciding what they will make and what materials they will use may be the ďŹ rst opportunity children have to make independent choices and decisions. This is called self-direction.

Art is a language of thought...

We learn through our senses...

It allows children to express their individual thoughts – their individuality. Our personal development is based on what happens to us in the two worlds in which we live. One is the external world of our everyday life: the people we meet, the places we go, and the things we see; the other is the inner world of our senses, thoughts and feelings, interests and knowledge. Art experiences are important because they form the bridge of communication and interaction between these two worlds.

Our ability to see, feel, hear, smell and taste provides the contact between us and our environment and requires active participation. For children, making art is a sensory exploration experience. They enjoy the feeling of a crayon moving across paper and seeing a blob of coloured paint grow larger. Exploring materials is very important because it is through exploration that children build knowledge of the objects in the world around them.

Art is also important for the development of the right side of the brain; (academic learning develops more the left side of the brain). There are a multitude of other skills and behaviours that are promoted through

art. Art also teaches children to make good judgments, to find more than one solution to a problem, to see and interpret the world in many perspectives, to take risks, and have a go.

Creativity – the courage to think one’s own original thoughts and to act upon them – is central to art.

Although society tends to emphasize conformity, art provides a vehicle for children to express originality, to experiment, and to think and act creatively.

Creativity enhances self-esteem and confidence and it strengthens the “self”, making the child more resilient.

Few children will become tomorrow’s famous painters or sculptors, but all can be influenced to maintain a confidence and an ability to be creative, if not in the arts, then in other fields of human

endeavour. Society owes its progress to the contribution of those who have dared to act upon their original thoughts.

Art experiences in early childhood The art programme in early childhood must consider that children learn best when they “learn by doing” i.e. in an active rather than in a passive way. They also learn best when they are interacting with other children and with their environment through touching, seeing, smelling and hearing. So it is very important for adults, both teachers and parents, to provide children with many new and rich experiences; to talk to them about what they see, to experience and question what they hear, touch and taste; and to allow them to draw and paint what they want and to praise them. The richness of their lives will eventually start to show in their art work.

For children the process of making something is far more important than the end result.

It is also important to provide a balanced program. There are several areas of art: drawing, painting, printing, collage, modelling, construction, threads and textiles. When two or more of these languages are combined, it is called “mixed media”. In early childhood programs drawing, painting and modelling are the most important vehicles for selfexpression.

Drawing, painting, printing and collage are usually twodimensional art; modelling, construction and threads and textiles are usually three-dimensional art.

The art programme should offer a balance of the twodimensional and threedimensional art experiences; especially as some children show a preference for threedimensional learning.
