Exploring PanPastels i

PanPastels are pastel colours packed in a pan format, providing the user with a professional artist quality, ultra-soft, highly pigmented, low dust and lightfast dry art material that can be applied like paint. They are a fantastic link between drawing and painting and provide a sophisticated and intuitive way of constructing images.

Load with Pigment: Load the sponge with pigment by wiping it across the PanPastel dish. Manipulate the tools over the surface of the paper

There are two main kinds of Sofft tools Sponge bars and knives with covers. Each sponge bar has a unique shape and size, designed specifically for pastel work and allow both broad and fine strokes. Gently wipe off excess pigment onto a dry paper towel to clean the sponge or use another edge when working in different colour groups. Can be washed after use with cold water and mild detergent (no need to do this regularly).

PanPastels Exploring Mixed Media Kits

Selecting Tools: The PanPastel Sketch & Tone Kit comes with seven pans of pastel and are ideal for portrait studies, figurative work and still life. Included are three Sofft sponge tools.

Pastel Knife Covers: Be careful to gently fit the cover onto the pastel painting knife (like a sock) ensuring you match the right shape.

Cleaning the Sponges: Gently wipe the tool horizontally on a piece of paper towel until the pigment fails to transfer onto the surface. Alternatively, sponges can be cleaned thoroughly by washing them with soap and warm water. Squeeze to remove water and leave to air dry.

Black Out Poetry

Level F - Secondary

Introduction

In this lesson students will create their own piece of black out poetry. Students will choose a piece of text either from a book, newspaper or a printed document. They will pick out words that stand out to them and emphasise these words by drawing around them with markers or pencils.

Steps

1. Explore examples of black out poetry. Discuss the properties of the process and differences they notice from poem to poem. Analyse any meanings or messages that can be drawn from the text.

3. Read back the chosen words and reflect on the choices made. Refine the words or link them together to create sentences or a poem.

Materials

2. Choose a piece of text to use. This could be a magazine page, newspaper, book or a piece of text printed from the internet. Explore your chosen text and select words which stand out or appeal to you. Lightly circle these words or underline them.

4.Use a combination of lines, shapes and patterns to emphasise those words on the page and create a focal point of your selected words. Use coloured markers, pencils or other materials to create your design. Your design can also link to the meaning of your poem.

Drawing Explorations (Primary)

Creating Patterns: We find patterns in everyday life. Take a minute to explore your environment. Use metallic oil Pastels on multipurpose paper to repeat shapes and form patterns! Also great to use on black paper.

Dispersing Colour: Draw dots on multipurpose paper with Artline Liquid Crayons. Drop water on each dot and blow through a straw to disperse the colour.

Blending Colour: Primary colours mixed together create secondary colours. Draw a shape and gradually fill with colour by laying colours over one another. Colour mixing can be achieved with paint, chalk pastels, liquid crayons and watercolour pencils.

Line Work: Lines can be thick, wavy, long, short, angular or organic. Lines can be captured though drawing, scratch art, painting and by assembling elements or materials i.e. popsticks, pebbles etc. Experiment with controlled line and pattern work using an EverZart Pen on brown kraft paper.

Watercolour: Use watercolour pencils on brown kraft paper for a striking effect. Drawing patches of colour which can then be spread with water.

Creating Backgrounds: An alternative to starting on a plain sheet is to create a background. Backgrounds can be created using food dye, paint and collage. Scribble on multipurpose paper with Zart School Colours Thick Markers to create large blocks of colour to use as backgrounds or in collage.

Collage: Combine and overlay different papers, fabrics, tapes and art materials to create unique 2D and 3D artworks. Draw with fluoro oil pastels on bulky news paper and cut sections of the drawing. Glue shapes onto a contrasting background.

Black Marker Drawing: Experiment with less controlled line and pattern, using Zart School Colour Black Markers on brown kraft paper.

Working With Watercolour i

Watercolour paint is applied with a brush onto paper and remains soluble to water and permeable to touch over time. It’s more transparent and thinner compared with other water-based paints such as gouache and acrylic.

Transparency: Opacity naturally varies across colours. The pigment’s natural properties determine whether the paint is transparent, semitransparent or opaque. Transparent colours are often used for glazing and allow the light to transfer through the paint and reflect off the paper, which improves colour vibrancy.

Staining Power: Some colours have greater pigment strength, so less paint is required on the brush, especially when mixing colours. E.g., mixing a mid-orange requires less red than yellow. Staining pigments are difficult to lift off the paper, whereas nonstaining pigments can be more easily removed by re-wetting the paper and lifting the colour off.

Granulation: As watercolours are made from ground up pigment, they react to water and the paper surface in unique ways.

Non-granulating pigments react smoothly and evenly with water and provide uniform coverage with little variation in texture. Ideal for rendering solid man-made surfaces.

What About the Difference Between Watercolour Tubes & Pans?

Pigments are ground and stone-milled together with water and a binder called Gum Arabic, which enables the pigment to sit on the paper surface. This mixture is then either transferred into paint tubes at the consistency of toothpaste or poured directly into paint trays to form hard discs.

Granulating pigments separate from the binder when mixed with water. Pigment settles in the valleys of the paper, leaving a grainy texture. This is more obvious on highly textured (rough) paper. These effects are desired when painting foggy skies, hazy landscapes and beach waves.

Tube Paint

• Toothpaste consistency.

• Can be used straight from the tube without adding any additional water to achieve maximum colour intensity and coverage.

• Ideal for mixing large batches of paint.

• Preparation and pack up time is required for squeezing out paints and cleaning palettes.

• Often there is paint wastage as it can be difficult to determine how much you need.

Some pigments left to dry on the palette can be reworked but can be difficult as paint loses its colour intensity and may appear grainy.

• Tubes are less convenient to transport.

• If caps are not replaced correctly, they will get stuck and paints will dry out.

• Often colour mixing is required.

Introduction

In this lesson students will explore the style of Steampunk and create their own Steampunk inspired animal. Students begin by drawing a silhouette of their chosen animal, they will then fill in their silhouette with drawings of steam powered machinery to make their silhouette look mechanical. Students will add colour to this design using water colour pencils and fill in larger areas with creamy colours glitter paints.

1. Analyse the Steampunk style and discuss the aesthetic qualities. Explore examples of Steampunk creatures with books such as Aquatica and Mechanical or other images as inspiration.

3. Finish drawing in the details and design of your Steampunk animal. Trace over the grey lead pencil lines with water colour pencils focussing on Steampunk inspired colours.

5. Complete the painting of the silhouette. Paint over a small selection of wooden cogs and gears and paste these over the drawing to finish.

2. Choose an animal and draw its silhouette in grey lead pencil. Fill out the silhouette with Steampunk style machinery such as cogs and gears, metal panels, pipes, etc. Use images from the industrial revolution and the machinery used there as inspiration to help them draw details as well as wooden cogs and gears to trace.

4. Use pearlescent water colour paints to fill in the areas of each shape with colour.

In this lesson, students will explore clay construction techniques by creating a pinch pot inspired by nature. They will begin by constructing a basic pinch pot using clay. They will then enhance it by adding hand-modelled pieces of clay inspired by nature. To add colour and complete their piece, students will glaze and fire their work.

Steps

1. Explore various shapes and forms found in nature. Examine objects like nuts and seeds to draw inspiration for your own artwork.

3. After constructing the pot, practice hand-building small seeds and pods that were inspired by nature out of small pieces of clay. Create a variety of these pieces to add to the pot.

2. Create a pinch pot using clay. Begin by kneading the clay and shape it into a sphere before pinching into the middle to construct the pot shape.

4. Join the smaller pieces of clay to the larger pot by scoring the surface of both objects, applying slip and joining the clay from both pieces together.

5. Allow the work to dry before proceeding to the bisque firing stage. Ensure the clay is bone dry before placing in the kiln.

6. Apply an underglaze to the bisquefired pots. Consider the colours you wish to use and apply the glaze in two coats.

7. Once the underglaze is dried apply two layers of clear gloss glaze before placing in the kiln for a final fire.

Surface Decoration On Ceramics i

Surface decoration isn’t just for paper or fabric, it’s for ceramics too and the options are endless! Below we explore a range of techniques that can be used on natural clay and/or air drying clay.

Tip: Create experimental tiles from leftover clay rather than experimenting on final work.

Glaze on Glaze: Some glazes change hue and create exciting effects when applied in multiple layers or over other colours.

Experiment using two glazes. Apply two layers of each glaze to create your own unique colours and effects. This method is suitable for either earthenware or stoneware glazes – but do not use them together. Apply glazes to bisque fired clay, allowing each layer to dry between applications. Once layering is complete, kiln fire.

Impressions & Carving: Clay’s soft and pliable surface makes it ideal for debossing, stamping into and capturing impressions.

Experiment by creating patterns with a range of modelling tools, natural materials and found objects. Tip: Wooden objects work better than plastic.

Bubble Glazing: In a plastic cup, combine brush-on glaze (earthenware or stoneware) with water in 1:1 ratio, and add a dollop of dishwashing detergent – mix well. Using a clean straw, blow air continuously into the cup to create bubbles. Allow bubbles to overflow onto the clay surface. Do not oversoak the clay (less is best). As the bubbles burst, the pattern will appear! Allow glaze to dry. This technique should be done on bisque fired clay.

Dispense Glaze Onto Clay: Improve control when drawing glaze details and patterns to your pieces. Work on leather hard clay so the underglaze fires at the same rate as the clay body. Fill a dispenser bottle with underglaze. Cut off the tip of the nib to allow the underglaze to flow through. Draw fine details – spots, lines or squiggles – to the clay. Fire the clay. Tip: Use brush-on glaze to seal.

Speckled Underglaze: Containing elements of trachyte found in Buff Raku Trachyte clay that produces the unique speckled, textured effect. As trachyte can damage kiln shelves and contaminate future firings of white clays, people are often reluctant to use Raku clays. This underglaze provides the benefits of the textural effect without the kiln damage – as underglaze is not applied to the foot of artwork. Apply a few coats to leather hard, bone dry or bisque fired clay. Once dry, use translucent brush-on glazes over the top to add colour (stoneware glazes work best or seal with clear glaze).

Sgraffito: Add texture and contrast to ceramic pieces with Sgraffito (“to scratch”). This decorative carving technique is produced by scratching through a top layer of colour, to reveal another colour underneath. Allow clay to dry to leather hard. Paint a layer of underglaze and allow to dry. Using a ribbon tool, carve a design or pattern into the clay’s surface, to reveal the natural clay underneath.

Extension: Paint the negative areas to create a twotoned pattern.

Tissue Transfers: How to use tissue transfer paper: Place tissue transfer image-side down in the correct position. Use a moist firm brush or sponge on the back with even pressure. Do not oversoak. Leave for 1-2 minutes, then remove the remaining paper carefully. If applying to a bowl or dome, mosaic tissue using small pieces.

Tip: Can be used on hardened air drying clay (Oz Clay) if varnished to seal transfer.

Raw clay can be stretched after the tissue transfer has been applied and the design will stretch with the clay. Bisque fired clay provides the most detailed transfer and will not smudge with glazing. Ensure paper is removed from surface before firing.

Leather hard or bone dry clay can be once fired with clear or translucent colour glaze sealing transfer.

Metallic Leaf: Metallic lustre glazes provide a unique and lush finish to kiln fired ceramics. However, lustres easily burn out and distort if overfired, and they also contain lead. Here’s a cheat’s way to achieve rich metallic colours – on both bisque fired clay (that will not be refired) and air drying clays. Apply gold size with a brush to hardened air drying clay (Oz Clay) or bisque fired clay. Leave to dry until tacky. Using a clean soft brush, transfer metallic leaf over tacky area, brushing away access.

Introduction

In this lesson students will explore textile art and stitching techniques to create a small soft sculpture artwork inspired by citrus fruits. Students will use paint markers to decorate a calico bauble template. They will then explore various stitching techniques to add texture and detail into their work.

Steps

1. Explore the shapes and colours of a variety of citrus fruits.

3. Explore a variety of different stitches which can be used within textiles artworks. Practice some of these stitches on spare fabrics.

5. Use long or running stitches to decorate the citrus segments or explore other stitches which can create unique textures.

2. Use a Street paint marker to draw the citrus segments and outer peel on a calico bauble and leave to dry.

4.Stitch around the outer edge of your bauble using a blanket stitch or stitch of your choice.

6. Display your work as a class by hanging your pieces together as a collaboration.

Introduction

In this lesson, students will create their own stained glass-inspired wellbeing display using these baubles as a template for their work. Students will explore a material of their choice on the base of the bauble. They will decorate the entirety of the base before layering the black paper stencil over the top and adhering it with glue before creating a class display of their work.

Steps

1. Start by exploring the wellness bauble shapes as a class. Discuss how the shapes incorporate both positive and negative space. Share ideas on materials that can be used to decorate the templates and their qualities.

3. Utilize your chosen material to craft a captivating pattern on the white bauble shape. Consider the colours, shapes, and images associated with the word on the bauble, or those that evoke feelings of wellbeing and happiness. Allow the base to dry for a few minutes if needed.

2. Choose one of the wellness bauble shapes to work with and discuss the shapes, colours, and uplifting words depicted on the bauble. Encourage students to explore how these elements relate to wellbeing. Pick one design to create a meaningful artwork.

4. Apply glue to the back of the black cut-out bauble using a glue stick. Gently press the two bauble shapes together and let them dry. Once the pieces have adhered, discuss a display as a class and present the artworks in a group.
