Moreover, we encourage all undergraduates to voice their ideas and concerns to USG members. Ultimately, our goal to make Princeton a place where every student can make the most of their undergraduate experience.

Highlights of the year OPT/CPT CHANGES (P 11-12)

After many international students were unable to begin their internships (due to new policies by the U.S. government leading to increased processing time), USG representatives were able to voice student concerns on the university committee charged with tackling this issue. We were able to successfully implement changes to Princeton's policies on summer visas.

MENSTRUAL PRODUCTS (P 25)

This yea, we also saw the first-ever successful implementation of a free menstrual products program at Princeton. The pilot this spring included over 52 public restrooms on campus, with special funding from VP Calhoun's office. After receiving much positive feedback, we were able to secure funding to ensure that this program continues.

TWO REFERENDUM PASSED ON SUSTAINABILITY (P 24)

Through our sustainability task force, we were able to pass 2 crucial referenda: for calling on the university to take action to reduce carbon emissions and for institutionalizing the task force within USG as a standing committee.

HONOR CODE REFORM (P 11-12)

Along with members of the Honor Committee, the USG Academics Committee helped to push for the elimination of the standard 1-year suspension penalty. After pushback from the administration in 2017 for a similar policy, this new system is now in effect.

RESTRUCTURED TRANSPARENCY INITIATIVES (P 28)

This year, we restructured our office hours system through our Transparency Task Force in order to increase engagement with more students. Instead of having people come up to our office, we came down to students through tabling in Frist every Wednesday night.

WORKING WITH ADMINISTRATORS TO SHAPE THE FUTURE OF THE UNIVERSITY

The university is currently in a critical period of transition, and so we've worked with university stakeholders on issues that will affect future generations of Princetonians. These include: helping plan the new Wintersession, focus groups for the construction of the new UHS building, and giving feedback on the development of new campus.

financial report Chaired by: Brad Spicher '20 Over the course of the 2019 administration, a number of significant changes were made to the budget, both in its allocations and its structure. First, these budgets were calculated deducting the total amount already spent in a given semester and category before the passage of the budget, allowing greater flexibility. This “live actuals” approach was necessary given that this year was financially tighter than previous years. Additionally, a number of cuts were made to certain USG committees and initiatives-- in particular Academics, CCA, and the retreat-- on the basis that money allocated in the past to these items has not always been spent in its entirety.

Although this was a tight year money-wise, we were able to allow increased funding for student initiatives, like the Art X Fashion show, to establish Yardparties as a standing line-item on the USG budget, and to provide greater funding for mental health week than in years prior.

In the Spring semester, the budget was lower than anticipated, and lower than previous semesters. In turn, we ran a $4,675.97 deficit in order to smooth the impact of this decreased funding across multiple semesters, and allow us to maintain funding for our most important initiatives. We do not expect to run a deficit in semesters moving forward.

ACADEMICS COMMITTEE Chaired by: olivia ott '20

KEY INITIATIVES/ACCOMPLISHMENTS: CREDIT FOR INTERNSHIPS The Academics Committee collaborated with the University’s Working Group on Internships during the summer and fall of 2019 to successfully create a mechanism to award credit to students for summer internships and experiential learning opportunities. This policy change will go into effect in the summer of 2020 and will particularly impact international students because it will allow them to apply for CPT, a special type of summer work visa.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY REFORM The Academics Committee has continued to work to implement new changes to the Honor Committee (HC) and academic integrity over the past semester. Its key accomplishments in this area include eliminating the standard penalty, creating a one-semester suspension penalty, increasing the range of probationary periods available as possible penalties, adding a dean on-call to HC proceedings, introducing professional investigators to HC investigations, publicizing the first HC statistics report in May 2019, and improving HC communication practices to students-in-question and the student body.

PEER REPRESENTATIVES INSTITUTIONALIZATION The Academics Committee worked with Bobo Stankovikj ‘20 to revitalize the role of the Peer Representatives in the context of academic integrity proceedings. Key changes include establishing this organization as an official Ad-Hoc Committee of the USG Senate, creating a new website, designing a comprehensive training program in collaboration with the Honor Committee, the Director of CPS, and CONTACT volunteers, introducing the practice of assigning two Peer Representatives to each HC case, and adding the Peer Representative contact information to the HC’s first email to students-in-question.

GENERAL EDUCATION DISTRIBUTION REQUIREMENTS From 2017-2019, the Academics Committee collaborated with the University’s Committee on the Course of Study to propose and implement changes to Princeton’s general education distribution requirements, including creating a new culture and difference requirement, allowing classes to be designated as fulfilling the requirements for more than one distribution area, and amending the descriptions and classifications of existing distribution areas. These changes were successfully approved by the faculty in May 2019, and will go into effect for the class of 2024.

DECOUPLING 101 AND 102 LANGUAGE COURSES The Academics Committee brought a proposal to the Committee on the Course of Study that advocated for the decoupling of 101 and 102 language courses and argued that students should receive credit for 101 language classes, regardless of whether they take a 102 class in the spring. After meetings with different administrators and many individual language departments, the faculty voted to approve this foreign language credit change in the spring of 1019, and this policy will go into effect for the class of 2024.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE Chaired by: heavyn jennings '20 We saw awesome turnout for both lawnparties and dean’s date events despite the rain during Spring 2019 lawnparties and both spring 2019 and Fall 2019 Dean’s date celebrations. People showed up and showed out. The spirit was well needed-Fall 2019 was the first lawnparties where we tried to do multiple small headliners versus one big headliner. The new format got mixed reviews from people, but it gave everyone something nice to look forward to. JOINT COMMITTEE ON SEXUAL MISCONDUCT This joint committee was created in response to a nine-day protest that unfolded in front of Nassau Hall mid-May of last year. As co-chair, I ensured the relevance of the material presented in these meetings and acted as the voice of students in a room of mostly administrators outside of USG President Zarnab Virk. Another considerable part of sitting on this committee was seeing how much could be done within the committee to ensure that the majority, if not all, of the demands from the student protestors, were given their due diligence. Many hours went into meetings and the editing of the report. Through the process, we met with a plethora of university faculty, staff, and students to get a sense of what could be done and how quickly we could enact change. A campus-wide report was released on October 24, 2019, alongside an external review conducted by Amy Adelman, Deputy General Counsel, Office of the General Counsel, Emory University; Howard Kallem (Ret.), formerly the Director for Title IX Compliance, Office for Institutional Equity, Duke University, who also has nearly two decades of prior experience in the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights; and Laura Rugless, Executive Director and Title IX Coordinator, Equity and Access Services, Virginia Commonwealth University.

CAMPUS & COMMUNITY AFFAIRS Chaired by: chris walton '21

The Campus & Community Affairs Committee of the USG works on “town & gown” relations, with the main recurring projects including Communiversity, Restaurant Week, Vote 100, and recently Princeton Preview. Communiversity is an arts festival that involves both campus community members as well as the town on Princeton. It consists of local vendors, student performances, business showcases, artists, food and more! Through Restaurant Week, CCA partnered with local restaurants both in the spring and fall semesters to offer discounts for students. CCA also came together with ODUS & Princeton Votes to help promote voter engagement on campus and continue the relatively new Vote100 campaign.

HOUSING AD-HOC COMMITTEE Chaired by: betsy pu '22 & sarah lee '22 Established in order to facilitate a fair room draw process, the committee has conducted a series of technical meetings with Housing, investigating the behind-the-scenes of Room Draw 2019 and the new in-house system created to supplement CBORD. We worked in conjunction with Housing, with several members of the committee serving on the Undergraduate Housing Advisory Board, with our suggestions leading to tangible deliverables for Room Draw 2020, which include: an extended timer to complete the room selection, a full list of available rooms on the website, a confirmation email of the selected room assignment and meal plan, information about the waitlist process, and extended time between room draw group times. Our findings were compiled, written, and will be sent out to all undergraduates in our report. In the new semester, our focus will be on bridging the gap in communication between Housing and the student body, creating and disseminating a survey to be completed by sophomores, juniors and seniors. With the survey results, our committee will make policy suggestions for Housing to implement in the future. In order to ensure the randomization of the draw groups in Room Draw 2020, our committee will also conduct a statistical analysis of the room draw groups, comparing draw group times to past years, with results published in a second report.

MOVIES COMMITTEE Chaired by: jess ma '21

The USG Movies Committee works in collaboration with the Princeton Garden Theater to provide free movie showing to all Princeton students on the weekends.

The Movies Committee was chartered after starting as a task force. It was created for the purpose of providing students with a low-cost weekend activity outside from going out.

Both during the spring and fall semesters, we showed movies almost every weekend, for 3 days a week (Thursday-Saturday).

This year, we have sold out 15 movies, provided sneak previews from A24 and Universal, and improved attendance from previous years. Some of our movie highlights include Crazy Rich Asians, A Star is Born, Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse, and many more.

To provide more transparency into the movie selection process, we have opened up to movie suggestions from the student body and kicked off our presence on social media with our USG Movies Facebook page and Instagram account. As we look ahead to the new year, we hope to provide more exciting movies to the student body.

Chaired by: ben press '20 & isabella faccone '21 The primary purpose of the U-Council is to serve as “a permanent conference of the representatives of all major groups of the University” where “they could each raise problems that concern them and … be exposed to each other’s views.” Meeting usually happen once a month. All member of the USG U-Council sit on the CPUC, and the two chairs, along with the USG president, sit on the CPUC Executive Board.

Through the executive board, they have the power to shape the agenda of topics for the year.

The largest change this year for U-Council was the reformatting of how CPUC meetings were conducted. In response to this change, our priority was to make sure the CPUC meetings were still accessible for students who wanted to attend and ask questions. We created a new infographic to make the information easier to digest, and additionally included a questions form a week before each meeting. We then made sure that all questions received were asked and answered at these meetings by the appropriate administrators.

ALUMNI AFFAIRS

Chaired by: thomas johnson '22 This year, USG worked with the Alumni Affairs office to understand what the biggest disconnect was between students and the alumni.

We realized that many students were unaware of the different ways they could contact alumni. There was also very little training on how to use TigerNet, a tool that helps connect all Princeton students, both past and present. Accordingly, we began working on ways to create and improve training surrounding TigerNet. Additionally, during Reunions, we were able to hold a Wine and Cheese event to connect USG alumni.

PROJECTS BOARD

Chaired by: rachel hazan '21 & kavya chaturvedi '21 USG Projects Board, the main funding body for student group events on campus, had another successful year. Working in collaboration with ODUS, we funded events ranging from the Princeton Soccer Conference to Ralph Nader.

We also funded event for Princeton Preview, using money from the admissions office. In addition to our normal duties, we developed clearer funding guidelines for groups, including a stricter timeline and reinforcing compliance. All in all, we funded 224 events this past year, and we’re looking forward to continue working with student leaders next year!

STUDENT GROUPS RECOGNICTION (SGRC) Chaired by: emma parish '21 & lutfa subair '21 The Student Groups Recognition Committee (SGRC) works in conjunction with the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Students (ODUS) to help groups of motivated students find their niche on campus. Over the course of the year, the SGRC approved over 20 clubs, which were then approved by the USG Senate.

SUSTAINABILITY TASK FORCE Chaired by: claire wayner '22 The task force sponsored and passed a referendum (83% support, 39% of students voting) meant to institutionalize sustainability in USG by establishing a permanent standing Sustainability Committee. The group also worked to increase awareness of campus recycling policies and the Office of Sustainability’s new “Recycling on Campus” mobile app by tabling in Frist and sending out weekly “recycling tips” in the USG newsletters.

Finally, in partnership with the Princeton Student Climate Initiative, the task force published the Princeton 2019 Climate Progress Report on the USG website, a document which summarizes Princeton’s past, current, and future carbon emissions and decarbonization efforts (including ways students can help). The publication of this report follows up on many of the requests of Referendum No. 1 from spring 2019, which dealt with carbon neutrality on campus.

MENSTRUAL PRODUCTS PROJECT TEAM Chaired by: wendy zhao '19 & preeti iyer '20 In the fall of 2020, the Menstrual Products Task Force successfully launched a University-wide initiative to provide free menstrual products in 56 bathrooms. The restrooms chosen were based on data from previous pilot trials and consulting facilities to understand where the greatest need is; these include women’s bathrooms, men’s bathrooms and gender neutral bathrooms across seven campus buildings. Chaired by Preeti Iyer ’20, over the past two years, the team has worked closely with the Vice President for Student Life, Rochelle Calhoun, as well as John Argento, Operations Manager of Building Services in Facilities. They selected Aunt Flow as the official vendor, a vendor that was both economically and environmentally friendly. Moving forward, the project team initiated a partnership with the Interclub Council (ICC) to bring free menstrual products to all eating clubs, is hosting a national conference (PERIODPALOOZA.) for discussion on the field of menstruation and related policy, and is continuing to work with the administration to expand to more bathrooms on campus in 2020.

MENTAL HEALTH TASK FORCE Chaired by: allen liu '22 This task force sought to evaluate how information on campus mental health resources is presented and is creating a guide, in conjunction with Letters to Strangers (L2S) to help students navigate these resources. The guide covers the following topics: on-campus care (through Counseling and Psychological Services), walk-in appointments and satellite offices, off-campus care and funding, non-medical resources, academic support and accommodations, leaves of absence, peer support, and general advice. As a part of this process, we: Collaborated with Dr. Calvin Chin, Director of Counseling and Psychological Services (CPS), to review the current presentation of information on mental health resources.

Administered a survey (anonymous) with Letters to Strangers (L2S) to the undergraduate student body to collect student experiences and insights on campus mental health resources. The survey received 62 responses.

Collected information on academic support, leaves of absence, and accommodations from surveys, Directors of Studies, and the Office of Disability Services.

Created a one-page graphic summarizing key information from the guide, to be placed in various public spaces on campus.

WINTERSESSION Chaired by: andres larrieu '22 Wintersession is an ongoing program dedicated to explore different interests, whether they are hobbies, passions, academic pursuits, or just fun activities in the form of classes or workshops. Taking place during Intersession, these workshops are taught by different members of the Princeton University Community: Undergraduates, Graduate Students, Staff, and Faculty. On its last year as a USG initiative (before it is institutionalized by the university starting next year), Wintersession had over 40 workshops and over 600 individual registrations, with classes ranging from Introductions to Magic and Mentalism to Personal Finance workshops.

INDIGENEITY TASK FORCE Chaired by: gabriel duguay '22 Convened this fall, the Indigeneity at Princeton Task Force has been meeting with a variety of faculty and administrators to work towards three goals: creating a land acknowledgement resource for the University, increasing the enrolment of Indigenous students, and the creation of an Indigenous Studies certificate. The Task Force would not be possible without the hard work of Kate Schassler’21 and Jessica Lambert’22, President of NAP.

TRANSPARENCY Chaired by: andres larrieu '22 The Transparency Task force works to increase engagement from the Senate with students. This year, we restructured our office hours system to make sure it was as accessible and convenient for students as possible. Every Wednesday night at Frist, we set up tabling for office hours where we offer fun facts about USG overall, and more recently partnered with the Sustainability task force to teach students how to recycle here in Princeton. In addition to this, we added two new electronic ways of reaching We're finding ways to increase outreach, so you'll probably hear more from us soon!

TRANSPORTATION Chaired by: elizabeth bailey '21 This semester, the Transportation Task Force has joined the University Transportation Advisory Council to redesign Princeton's bus transit system. Key considerations include sustainability, wait times, handicap accessibility, and the locations along the route. We are excited to be partnering with administrators, faculty, graduate students and professors to make sure that undergraduate voices are represented in this conversation, and we encourage you to reach out to participate in the process! We are also discussing measures to make the campus more bike and pedestrian friendly, and are pushing to bring a dockless version of Zagster to campus. We organized the USG Thanksgiving Buses, which take students to and from DC, Baltimore and Boston over break.

THESIS TASK FORCE Chaired by: tania bore '20 The thesis task force, which was created this semester, explored the expansion of resources that will help seniors complete their thesis. One resource will involve a Thesis Adviser Search Engine where people can look for thesis advisers within and across departments, and filter based on preferred topics of expertise, advising style, and more. Another resource would be having a recommended thesis timelines; this information will include IRB approval deadlines, relevant funding deadlines, when various steps of the thesis should ideally be completed like finding a topic or commencing the write up process, and so on. Another resource will be a “best practices” tool on how to tackle different aspects of the thesis writing process within the timeline. This resource will include advice from past thesis writers and thesis advisers on these aspects that are complementary to information already existing in independent guides. These resources can fall within department independent work guides and/or on the website of the Office of Undergraduate Research. We understand that some departments have some of these resources available to students, our aim is to ensure that all departments that find these resources beneficial offer them to students.

As part of our efforts: We started discussing our ideas with Senior Associate Dean of the College, Claire Fowler and Director of the Office of Undergraduate Research, Pascale Poussart.

We contacted Project Lever to gather information related to a potential partnership. (Project Lever is a company that has built a thesis adviser “search engine” for Harvard, MIT SDM, and Boston University.)
