ALULA is a living narrative of the past human settlements and civilizations across different time periods from the Ancient North Arabian Kingdoms to the Islamic Era. The remains in Alula grant us insights into the cultures of those who came before us, reminding us that history is an ongoing strand between the past and the future.

WINTER ’22 COLLECTION aims to unveil the fascinating cultures of previous civilizations through a line of High-End Winter Shawls echoing the charm and beauty of Alula.

Three Shawls represent three distinct Kingdoms and Civilizations; Dadan & Lihyan, The Nabataen, and The Islamic Era. Having existed in varied time zones, each of them is displayed in a unique and precise way to reflect their authentic essence and complex characteristics.

IKMAH MOUNTAIN is situated in a valley of harsh terracotta-hued rocks, with bold cracks within the rock formations. Hence the design graphics reflect the surrounding textures and topography being edgy represented by sharp lines and dusky colours, presenting a SECTIONAL CUT throught the rock.

The shawl tells the story of the ancient kingdom of DADAN AND LIHYAN , where they used engravings and inscriptions as a way of preserving their presence and history.

HERITAGE REMAINS

[600 C. BCE - 3 C. BCE]

ITHLIB MOUNTAIN , one of the sandstone Monoliths of NABATEAN KINGDOM , having an organic shape and profile. The aura of the Monolith is warm and calm as it’s mostly covered with a smooth surface and graceful contours. This is reflected within the design by outlining the FAÇADE of Ithlib using a continuous smooth line.

The illustration also traces its visible rhythmic reliefs shaped by the wind. The density and different weights of lines create a gradient visual effect of contoured surfaces and tones; mirroring the delicate essence of the landscapes.

CONTOUR ALLURE

ALULA OLD TOWN follows a grid of mudhouses depicting the maze of remnants built by pilgrims, travelers and settlers during the islamic period, interrupted by the historic 19th century castle forming an interesting contrast of moods.

Represented within the design composition, different scales of different elements were adapted to create a coherent yet complex AERIAL VIEW configuration. The chosen color scheme reflects the natural ambience of the scenery in a contemporary scheme.

We are proud and honoured to be among the six participants who were selected to receive the prestigious ALULA DESIGN AWARD on it’s 1st Edition.

We thank THE ROYAL COMMISSION OF ALULA firstly for showing appreciation to our work, and secondly for creating the space for designers and creative minds to be able to flourish in thinking and invention. With Alula being a rich source of inspiration, we believe that this oppurtunity will unveil outstanding talents within our creative community in Saudi Arabia and invite global artists and expertise to cherish the historic and cultural treasures found in Alula.
