SEEING • 11 of the Zakopane style. The Tatra Museum arranged an Art Gallery in its charming, renovated interiors, to display temporary exhibitions and a unique permanent exhibition “Artists and Art in Zakopane”. Its visitors can view works created by the best artists enchanted by the Tatras and Podhale: Rafał Malczewski, Leon Wyczółkowski, Zofia Stryjeńska and many others.

The exhibition organized by the Tatra Museum is dedicated to the life and work of an artist who described himself as a “modern type with a Podhale background”. Talented, but also very modest and industrious: Wojciech Brzega combined two worlds. He received education abroad on the one hand, and lived an ordinary Goral life in Zakopane on the other hand.

The Gallery is especially proud of its Witkacy Room featuring works by the original artist. The Tatra Museum has one of the largest collections of works by this artist in Poland, and the biggest collection of his photographs.

The exhibition features sculptures by Wojciech Brzega, his selected furniture and designs in the Zakopane style, illustrates his works for churches and chapels. Photographs and documents concerning the artist supplement the exhibition. The core of the exhibition is formed using own rich collections of the Tatra Museum, enriched by the most valuable works from private collections and items on loan from other museums and local parishes.

One of the themes of the exhibition is Zakopane: a town inspiring not only Tatras explorations but also artistic experiments.

Władysław Hasior (1928-1999) is famous as an original but also isolated artist; his work has always been resistant to ready classifications. He designed unusual monuments, created surrealist assemblages and open-air actions, took photographs documenting material culture of communist Poland. Hasior adapted the historic relaxing terrace to accommodate a gallery of his best works: flags, spatial compositions and sculptures. They are created from a variety of materials, found objects, frequently discarded, receiving new meanings by way of artistic creation. Provided with metaphoric, provoking titles, they encourage reflection on our contemporary world and art. Amusement park, endless carnival.

The Tatra Museum in Zakopane stages a summer exhibition dedicated to theatrical works by Jerzy Kolecki, an actor, stage designer and long-time manager of the RABCIO Puppet Theatre. The exhibition features puppets and set designs from three major performances that made the Rabka theatre famous in the 1970s: Zwyrtała the Musician, The Snow Queen and Aladdin and the Magic Lamp, including original painting designs from the artist’s family archive and author’s posters featuring selected performances. Jerzy Kolecki, born in 1925 in Wróblowice near Tarnów, student of painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków (1947-1952). After graduation, he settled in Rabka -Zdrój, to work for the local puppet theatre as of 1953. As a stage designer and artistic manager, he created the theatre’s programme and image, making the smallest of the then puppet theatres in Poland famous and award-winning. The project entitled The Establishment of Palace Museum is aimed to create a memorial site and a museum in the former Gestapo station and prison, known as the Torture Chamber of Podhale. The project of The Establishment of Palace Museum is co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund as part of Regional Operational Programme for Małopolskie Voivodeship for the years 2014-2020.

The Museum was established on the initiative of the last wife of Kasprowicz, Maria Kasprowiczowa nee Bunin, and during her life. Three rooms are used to display personal memorabilia relating to the poet and his wife. These include a number of paintings. The Museum also hosts the Gallery of Paintings by Władysław Jarocki, arranged thanks to a donation made by Anna Jarocka nee Kasprowicz, the painter's wife and the younger daughter of the poet. A historic garden located by the Museum is permanently open to visitors and features the mausoleum of Jan Kasprowicz . This is a unique Art Deco granite structure designed by Karol Stryjeński and constructed in the years 1927-1933. The tomb is the resting place of the poet and his wife Maria. Visit also Museum’s social media: @Harenda-Muzeum Jana Kasprowicza and its website www.harenda.com.pl, featuring videos about Jan Kasprowicz and his museum.

The Władysław Jarocki Gallery hosts an exhibition of Japanese works entitled “A Japanese Woman From Harenda. Japanese Art From the Collections of Jan Kasprowicz Museum”. A collection of woodcuts that was never displayed before takes us to the world of beautiful courtesans, ancient gods, samurai and amazing landscape paintings depicting the land cherry blossoms. The exhibition also features items related to Japanese artist Senrin Kirigaya who visited Harenda in 1931.

We warmly invite you to spend a night with poetry by Emily Dickinson. On 9 July at 18:00, we meet with Prof. Dr. hab. Agnieszka Salska, an outstanding expert in the history of American 19th-century poetry, to reflect on the ongoing revival of the work created by the author of Hope.

The painting by Rembowski is displayed in Villa Atma along with a selection of reproduced photographs taken about 1910 to illustrate the concept of artistic interior design that prevailed in the early 20th century and explain how applied arts and design corresponded with art rooted in native tradition and culture. 14 • SEEING Contributor together with Władysław Hasior and Tadeusz Brzozowski to the legend of Zakopane as a centre of free art. He combined the power of traditional sculpture with modern means of expression. His sculptures are characterized by monumentality and intense emotionality. They tell us about human fate with sympathy and love. The exhibition space has been active as of 1976. Since 1981, it is run by the artist's son Marcin Rząsa with Magda Ciszewska-Rząsa. In addition to the permanent exhibition of sculptures by Antoni Rząsa, the gallery displays exhibitions of contemporary art.

GALLERY OF CONTEMPORARY ART AT DOM DOKTORA 19 St. Witkiewicza Street Open daily 11:00-14:00 and 16:00-19:00 The original interiors of villa dating back to 1898, owned by the family of doctor Wacław Kraszewski (1872-1931), a physician and social activist, who rendered Zakopane great service, host an exhibition displaying e.g. memorabilia and documents relating to the history of four generations of the Kraszewski family, and temporary exhibitions featuring contemporary artists.

MAGDALENA KRASZEWSKA "VARIATION. FOUR DECADES OF WORK”. 5 July - 4 August 2022 Dom Doktora Gallery of Contemporary Art (19 Witkiewicza Street) hosts an individual exhibition of Magdalena Kraszewska entitled "Variation. Four Decades of Work”.

SEEING • 15 The vernissage of the exhibition will be held on 5 July 2022 (Tuesday) at 18:00. The exhibition will be displayed until 4 August.

Magdalena Kraszewska turns 80 on the vernissage day, 5 July. This date requires us to hold a jubilee exhibition. Magdalena Kraszewska (born in Warsaw) is a prominent figure in Zakopane. For almost thirty years, she has conducted a cultural salon, contemporary art gallery and a private museum located in her family house known as Dom Doktora. Thus the historic villa built in the Zakopane style, owned by the Kraszewski family since the early 20th century, is accessible to artists and visitors from Poland and abroad. Everyone can enter the villa and feel the climate of this unique place, combining the private, the inherited and traditional with the public, new and current.

from her linear, monochrome drawings made in the 1980s and 1990s to recent works fascinating us with their play of colours and dynamics of abstract forms. The transformation took place in 2016, when the artist began to use coloured felt-tip pens, creating a kind of private diary in which she records her daily emotions, moods and reflections, using abstract visual language. The works were first displayed in Kraków during Krakers Cracow Art Week 2020. They were received as an injection of positive energy. "New Colour Games” by Kraszewska evidently enchanted the spectators, tired of the lockdown. The artist followed her success by displaying a selection of these works in her private gallery. She told Beata Zalot: “I like formal games, playing with composition. (...) I like abstract forms. For example, these spots can be treated as living animals. I have the feeling that more meanings can be hidden behind those abstract spots, giving others the chance to discover their own worlds there” (Abstract Art at Dom Doktora, Tygodnik Podhalański no. 50, 2020, p. 16).

Variation in forms, techniques and styles discloses interest in the transient, the mysterious, in things transforming in constant motion. The works displayed at Dom Doktora stir emotions and intellect, encourage contemplation and play.

This is the most advanced centre of this type in our region. It contains a 4D movie theater, the largest Polish model of the Tatras, a discovery room and numerous other attractions.

The current exhibition puts emphasis on the phenomenon of variation that can be observed in the works

three-dimensional models depicting a meadow and forest and illustrating human impact on Tatra ecosystems, with local animals playing the role of narrators.

The exhibition of Magdalena Kraszewska is a jubilee event but free from pompous ceremonies. We will celebrate it in a circle of friends, in a family atmosphere, preserving the style long adopted at Dom Doktora. Anna Baranowa (exhibition curator)

Open: Monday to Saturday, 8:00-15:00 Last admission at 14:00

Magdalena Kraszewska is a professional artist, painter and weaver. She studied in the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts with eminent professors (painting with Prof. Artur Nacht-Samborski; fiber art with Prof. Anna Śledziewska). She invites artists representing various disciplines and generations to her gallery in Zakopane. She displays her own works infrequently, usually as part of collective exhibitions. The time has come then to display an exhibition featuring works by the artist created over four decades:

by Kraszewska over the four recent decades.

An educational tour of the centre takes about one hour and is completely filled with attractions. The first point on the excursion route is the largest Polish model of the Tatras used to display a presentation with a commentary. Another stage of the tour includes realistic dioramas, i.e.

around the most dynamically growing iron works in southern Polish territories. The renewal project included restoration of: contours of the former mansion house (constructed for the Homolacs family), a coach house, ironworks management offices (currently occupied by Tatra National Park management), the historic granary. The area also contains an iron cross dating back to 1839 (one of the oldest preserved historic objects in Zakopane).

TATRA LAPIDARIUM The exhibition also includes wildlife documentaries showing nature of the Tatras from the perspective of their wild inhabitants. You can also visit a cave, and let your children play in the discovery room with educational computer games teaching map reading, training memory and observation skills, representing sounds produced by animals. If your children wish to jump like a chamois or run in the forest like a deer, the discovery room is an ideal place with its games in Kinect technology.

Closed for the time of renovation work.

However, the central location in the area will be occupied by a stage on which the two-day project will be inaugurated and closed. Clean Tatra is a major educational programme implemented in Zakopane and the Tatras as of 2012. In 10 annual actions conducted since that, 35 150 volunteers removed 6 719 of rubbish from mountain trails. The July project is supported every year by its partners: Mayor of Zakopane, Tatra National Park and Polskie Koleje Linowe.

The Zakopane Falcon Run Weekend is an exceptional sports event organized by Towarzystwo Gimnastyczne “Sokół”, Zakopane branch as of 2011. This year’s event consists of two runs with different distances and technical difficulties, on routes mapped out along picturesque Tatra trails. The Zakopane Run Weekend stands for unforgettable atmosphere, great cheers from fans, an opportunity to meet other lovers of skyrunning, including top Polish competitors. The event is accompanied by a special programme intended for kids. The organizers set up a children’s playground near the finish of Franciszek Marduła Sky Run, inviting kids to play exercise games while waiting for their family members who take part in the demanding race. 3RD National Painting Contest "My Zakopane”

The Zakopane Cultural Centre and Count Zamoyski Municipal Art Gallery invite visitors to the exhibition summarizing the 3rd National Painting Contest “My Zakopane”

Alicja Oleszczuk, Giewont, 2021, acrylic on canvas

Barbara Bakalarska, Penta, 2021, oil painting on canvas awarded, and four equivalent Honorary Distinctions were awarded to: Elżbieta Przepiórowska, Małgorzata Rosińska, Piotr Kaniecki, Zdzisław Poskier.

Identity, heritage, the present and pop culture in Zakopane

Vernissage of the 3rd National Painting Contest My Zakopane

The open formula of the contest enabled us to answer again the question about the way Zakopane is perceived today by contemporary artists. Massive response from artists representing all regions of Poland demonstrated that Zakopane with its historic, cultural and natural wealth provides an inexhaustible source of creative inspiration.

The jury has qualified to the summarizing exhibition 56 works by 42 artists from among 109 works by 66 artists registered for the contest. The following artists were awarded ex aequo Grand Prix: Anastazja Burko-Dziemidziuk and Adam Molenda. The second prize was awarded by the Jury to Mirosław Koprowski. The third prize was not

This year, the My Zakopane contest is organized for the third time by the Zakopane Cultural Centre and Count Zamoyski Municipal Art Gallery. The event organizers have thus established certain tradition and gained experience as a responsible and professional team who introduced Zakopane to the group of elite cultural centres that not only aim to promote art but also open up new horizons for artists. Since the contest bearing the unpretentious name My Zakopane is one of few biennale painting reviews that combine tradition with

(...) While filled with positive energy that must have been triggered by such a wide range of attitudes represented by the artists who entered the contest, the Jury was appointed and forced to select award-winning works. The task was tough and the role of jury members was unenviable, because the plurality of attitudes has given rise to controversy since time immemorial, and even the best Solomonic verdict may fail to satisfy our ambitions, dreams or needs. This time, the Jury decided to give Ms Anastazja Burko-Dziemidziuk and Mr Adam Molenda two ex aequo Grand Prix awards of Mayor of Zakopane. The works by both artists perfectly reflect the heritage and identity of Zakopane, considering also its present time and referring to its history and motifs prevailing in social awareness and regional pop culture. The Jury decided to present Mirosław Koprowski with the Second Prize for his original and intriguing interpretation of the Tatra landscape, both based on matter-painting experience and deeply rooted in the

tradition of Tatra landscape painting. This time, the Jury decided not to award the third prize, but to give another Honorary Distinction, thus awarding four equivalent Honorary Distinctions. The number of winners has to be limited, but I believe that all participants in this year’s contest My Zakopane, and especially those featured on the summarizing exhibition, made a substantial contribution to culture of the region. In these troubled times of social and political tensions, we have to learn that in addition to real fight and assistance, vitally important for those who suffer from oppression and injustice, war or disease, people of culture must be given the possibility of promoting the truth, good and beauty. These apparently outdated categories seem to stir no emotion in the population of almost eight billion individuals, although they used to move hundreds of millions in the past - still, they have the power of producing long-term effects and each activity in the domain of culture assists people in surviving the hardest adversity and building a new, hopefully better reality. Summarizing my reflections, maybe a bit extensive, I wish to extend my sincere congratulations to all

Małgorzata Gaffke, Koliba sień, 2020, original technique, handmade paper, 130-years frame winners, artists featured on the exhibition, and also those authors whose works are omitted, but above all to the contest Organizers on their professional and valuable artistic event that has won a firm position on the cultural map of Poland. EXHIBITIONS “FORTECKA’S SONG OF SONGS” ZOFIA FORTECKA, MAGDALENA FORTECKA, MARIA STRZELECKA Vernissage: 9 July 2022, 17:00 11 July - 27 August 2022

Krasicki “Skiing Passions. Olympic Tales”. A vernissage on 9 July at 17:00 opens an exhibition of reverse glass painting featuring works by Zofia and Magdalena Fortecka and Maria Strzelecka, entitled “Fortecka’s Song of Songs”.

Zofia Fortecka, Daniel

The garden still hosts an open-air exhibition displaying photographs by Paweł Murzyn “Blessed Moments. Zakopane 6 - 7 June 1997” commemorating the 25th anniversary of visit of Pope John Paul II to Zakopane. The permanent exhibition of reverse glass paintings by Zakopane artists, the Folk Art Gallery and the biographic exhibition featuring Olga and Andrzej Małkowski are described on following pages. Visitors are invited daily from 10:00 to 17:00 excluding Sunday and Wednesday.

Zofia Fortecka, A cross with crocuses Full immersion in the world created by Zofia Fortecka and her daughter Magdalena is both wonderful and highly demanding. Zofia Fortecka has created her work for almost 40 years.

She creates reverse glass paintings that delight audiences all over the world. She displayed her works in England, Bulgaria, Denmark, France, Spain, Germany, Slovakia, Hungary, the US and Italy, and on almost 50 exhibitions in Poland. Her painting is fascinating, because she admires both the world behind the window and the transcendent one. Her family is settled for generations in Krzeptówki at the foot of the Giewont massif, crowned with a monumental cross mounted by the Gorals, and clearly seen from her house that she built together with her husband Janusz.

As a deeply religious person and tireless thinker, Zofia Fortecka developed both her original painting technique and art themes. Based on her intimate knowledge of the Bible, the New and Old Testament and the lives of the Saints, she continually deepens her intellectual and spiritual insights, expressing her worldview on tiny, 5-cm fragments of glass. She combines them to form larger compositions, conveying narratives that extend beyond the merely aesthetic concept of beauty. It takes an in-depth analysis of each painting, with recollection of the source context, for a fresh viewer

FOLK ART GALLERY High summer began at the Red Mansion Native Culture Centre. Crocuses painted on glass and wood are in full blossom, products by Podhale artists tempt visitors to purchasing. In this time of joy and efflorescence, the Gallery offers you the opportunity of picking up a unique item from the rich collection of works created by local folk artisans, that will long evoke delight and smile.

Magda Fortecka, Angel to reflect on and fully understand the message by Zofia Fortecka. The combination of elements taken from the Tatra world surrounding the artist with her knowledge of history, art and literary history, brings amazing effects, making the painting of Zofia Fortecka unique; art historians find in her works inspirations by Byzantine, Romanesque and Gothic art. The Middle Ages with their arch motto ad maiorem Dei gloriam, acting and creating for the greater glory of God, seem to provide main inspiration for the work of Zofia Fortecka, and her miniature glass paintings forming larger compositions remind of mosaics that required patience, effort and concentration of their authors. Magdalena Fortecka frequently depicts angels. Her miniature paintings differ in their style from the works by Zofia.

Playing various instruments, elfin, slightly frolicsome, soaring in the sky or above roofs, wearing colourful dresses and fancy shoes or headwear, evoke associations with the works of Marc Chagall. Displayed along the works by her mother on joint exhibitions, complement her vision of the world. Like fish, also frequently depicted by Magdalena. Considering the paintings from a Christian point of view, they metaphorically form a “song of songs” jointly created by Fortecka and Fortecka. A Christian interpretation distinguishes multiple aspects of the Song of Songs. The reverse glass paintings created by Zofia and Magdalena Fortecka can also be interpreted from various perspectives, especially considered as a whole with common origins. The inspiration is provided by ideal love. The same feeling forms the foundations of work by Zofia Fortecka and Magdalena Fortecka.

Magda Fortecka, Angel With a Trumpet

This was the will of God that the task of documenting the visit of Pope John Paul II was assigned to Paweł Murzyn, an outstanding photographer, and the only one from Zakopane sanctioned to take pictures of the most important event in the history of Zakopane and Podhale. The scenes captured by Paweł Murzyn reveal various aspects of that visit, including the largest gathering in Podhale's history (300 thousand people) during the Mass celebrated at the base of Wielka Krokiew. For those who witnessed those events, it is an opportunity to recollect emotional moments; for younger generations – a lesson in history. And an inspiration to deep reflection for all.

Clean Tatra 2022 1-2 July 2022 Górna Rówień Krupowa Clean Tatra is a major educational and environmental programme implemented in Zakopane and the Tatras as of 2012. The initiative is aimed to popularize the idea of keeping nature clean and jointly care for our environment. In 10 annual actions conducted since that, 35 150 volunteers removed almost 10 tonnes of rubbish from mountain trails! The motto of our action reads "Leave Good Trace”.

The folk music band Zakopower gives a concert in our environmental camp at Górna Rówień Krupowa on Friday, 1 July, the night preceding their journeys aimed to clean Tatra trails. This will surely be a great injection of power before Saturday their tasks in the mountains! “We want Clean Tatra to convey a positive message. We are tired of bad news broadcast day by day, of pointing at what goes wrong. Hence, we decided to send another message, giving on the first July

weekend an example that can be imitated all over Poland. We also wish to demonstrate how to leave a good trace of our visit to the mountains, i.e. a trace that cannot be seen in nature. Even small pro-environmental actions can set an example followed by others”, said Maciej Marculanis, chair of Stowarzyszenie Czysta Polska. A good trace will be left during the 11th edition of Clean Tatra not only by thousands of volunteers who

will set out on Saturday, 2 July, to clean mountain trails, equipped with bags, gloves and characteristic T-shirts. The awareness of its participants is also raised due to valuable theoretical and practical knowledge they can acquire during this two-day educational event. The environmental camp set up in Górna Równia Krupowa offers kids and adults a variety of activities, competitions and lectures, each aimed to pass on a considerable portion of knowledge of the protection of Earth. The camp is divided into zones: environmental education with practical activities and workshops; sport with games and plays for children; catering with dishes and titbits prepared using local products. In the Eko MeetUp zone, always attracting crowds of young people, popular YouTubers and influencers meet and talk about environmental protection with their fans. Traditionally, a campsite will be arranged and a stage to hold the grand final of our action on Saturday night, 2 July, and to express thanks to all participants for their effort made to achieve our common goal: protecting the natural environment against contamination and leaving a good trace in the Tatras. Registration of volunteers for 11th Clean Tatra on the website of Stowarzyszenie Czysta Polska: https://czystapolska.org.pl /projekty/czyste-tatry/. Volunteers can also register on the first day of our action, on Friday, 1 July, in Górna Równia Krupowa.
