Hello, I am Zack. Throughout these years of learning and designing, I find myself eager to discover different problems and discuss issues.
In the process of managing issues and problems with design. I especially pay attention to the user flow and the ergonomics. In addition, the usability is also what I seek for.
I will describe myself as an over-attention to detail person and, which loves to be precise on model making.

- A salt calculating meter for elders
Introduction Aim
Elders can know how much salt they have used through -out the day and make a salt decreasing plan to prevent high blood pressure by owning Tokei.
The purpose is to form a healthy lifestyle and provide the elders a chance to pursue what they want.

Background
According to the World Health Organization, when the proportion of a society's population that is comprised of people aged 65 or older comes to 14%, it is an "aged society". In addition, when it supasses 21%, it is a "super-aged society".

Accordind to the statistics, in 2018 Taiwan has become an aged society and the government estimates that within 5 years we will soon advance to the "super-aged society". By the year of 2050, 1 in every 3 people will be 65 or older.

Problem
While the whole society is aging, welfare and the health of elders gain more importance than ever. More studies pay attention on exercises, healthy routines, policies and etc.
High blood pressure Excercise Tea
According to statistics, high blood pressure, cataract, heart disease, stomach disease and ulcer, and arthritis are five chronic diseases that 88% of the elders that age 65 or older have. In these diseases, high blood pressure, which 46.67% of the elders have is the highest among all diseases. As time goes on, the population of people that have high blood pressure will rise due to the aging of the society.
On the basis of the 2019 cause of death statistics in Taiwan, one out of every 4.5 people is dead due to three cardiovascular diseases that is directly realated to high blood pressure.
According to 2013-2015 Taiwan national nutrition and health condition survey, one out of four people age 18 or above has high blood pressure, which is approximately about 4.6 million people.

Interview & Persona
Through interviewing elders, I discover that elders pay more attention to what they eat than young people. They tend to steam or boil the ingredients they have bought from stands that they trust rather than deep fry or grill. When processing ingredients they make sure all the pesticides are cleaned. Some pays attention to the amount of seasoning, but most of them don't caculate the accurate number.

lifestyle: After retiring, she focuses on the family. She prepares breakfast and enjoys it with her husband. After a small break she goes to the park for a walk and chats with her friend until noon. She then prepares lunch. After lunch she sings in te park. At night she cooks dinner and finish it while watching tv.
lifestyle: She will have breakfast that her husband buys from stands and go to work. Then have lunch with her colleagues. After work, she will go to the super-market and by ingredients for dinner. Then head home to prepare dinner.She will call her parents twice a week to check whether they are eating healthy or not.

Research
Through the interview, I know elders are careful about what they eat, so I did research on healthy eating habits. During research, I found that consuming less than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day for adults can have an additional impact of lowering blood pressure.
Decreasing salt
The most used salt in Taiwan, every 100 grams of salt contains 39,143 milligrams of sodium. In order to consume less than 2,300 milligrams, we have to decrease the salt to about 5.9 grams per day.

Through testing, we know that the average use of salt is about 12 grams, which is about twice the amount of what our body need.
Through our research, we will notice the difference of saltiness between two plates of dishes when the salt decreases about 0.2 grams.
Through our research, we can decrease 1.2 grams of salt every two weeks without knowing the difference.

Design Process
After all the research and interviews, I started the design. I learned that I can slowly decrease the amount of salt and make a plan for elders. Through ideating, sketching, and prototyping, I finally form the model.

After choosing the salt hourglass, I have faced the problem of salt being to damp. In order to solve the problem, I chose different ways to dry the salt and did some testing.
Before shaping the form I made sure that the flow of the salt is smooth and the user experience is great. After drying the salt, the salt is still not moving. I tried different methods to tackle the problem.

- A stick cutter for garbage cleaner
Introduction Aim
Garbage cleaner at the night market can safely press the garbage and tie it up.
The purpose is to form a safe environment for cleaners at the night market.

"Let waste

Background
Night market is an unique way of gathering stands and sell different kinds of goods in Taiwan. Including accessories, food, clothes, etc. While people walk through paths filling with relaxing atmosphere and seek for what they need, they can also find novel food and products. It is also a must go when people visit other cities. Different authentic food can be seen and tasted.
There are about 300 night markets over the whole country. Raohe, Fengjia, Liuhe, Tainan Flowers are one of the most popular ones. These night markets can attract 10,0000 people per day and earn a total of 8,500,000,000 ntd (283.5 million us dollars) per year.
Due to the amount of people night markets attract. There must be a variety of needs or a variety of problems from both the customer and the seller. By strolling through the main roads and squeezing pass crowded paths. I observed the whole night market and found a few problems.
Problem
The problem is that people are used to diposable tableware. Throughout all the tablewares, bamboo made stick has a sharp end and can easily poke through paper bags and plastic bags. When the trash can is full, garbage cleaner will have to use their hands to press down the garbage to create more space, but by doing so, their hands will be injured. Nonetheless, after all the squeezing and pressing, they will have to pack the garbage. But when they do the pressing they tend to break the outer layer and causing small pieces of garbage falling out.
Research
I did a research on how to not let the stick poke out through the bag. The answer is simply fold it in half. By folding it in half the stick will be much shorter and the probability of poking out will simply decrease.

- A service to improve stray dog situations
Introduction Aim
People can safely interact with stray dogs with the product and be intimate with them. By being intimate we will be able to decrease stray dogs and give them a better home.
The purpose is to provide enthusiasts a way to impprove the situation for stray dogs.

"Let stray dogs be humanely treated"
Background
According to the Taiwan government's statistics, there are about 147 thousand stray dogs in 2018. Compare to 2017, the amount of stray dogs have increased about 20 thousand. In all the cities, Tainan and Changhua respectively has the most and second most stray dogs, which is about 22 thousand and 16 thousand.

Through reading papers and statistics, I figure out that TNVR is a promoted way by organizations that care about stray dogs. TNVR stands for trap, neuter, vaccination, and release. By operating this process, people wish to naturally decrease the amount of stray dogs.
Problem
So why is there TNVR, but the dogs still aren't decreasing? One of the reason is there is not enough brave and expertise dog capturer. In Tainan, there are two private organizations that cope with the problem. These two organization have a total of 5 capturer. Which means that 5 people have to cover the whole area of about 2,192 square kilometers (541655 acres).

Another problem is the way of capturing. Capturers use nets to limit the dogs action, and wait until dogs are too tired too panic. This happens to traumatize the dogs and cause them to take agressive actions after they are send to shelters.
Interview
By interviewing two dog behavior experts, one veterinarian, and two capture dog experts. I know that by slowly getting close and not facing the dogs is a way to decrease the dogs worry. By observing the dogs behavior, we can know whether they are starting to being aggressive or not.

Research
Through reaearch, I am able to figure out ways to let dogs get intimate with users, which is through the combination of sound, food, and smell. By knowing what colors dogs can see, I can decrease the uncomfortableness for them.
By giving a signal like a clicker sound every time before dropping the food can let the dog relate sound and food together. After several times, the dog will be restraint.
Some herbs like lavender can calm the dog down.
Through the chart, I see that dogs can only distinguish yellow and blue. Which means that by using the color green, we can easily camouflage.
Design Process
Through all research and interviews, my main goal is to get close to those dogs that are mild and slowly decrease the amount of stray dogs. By using the research, I start ideating and went testing. After testing, we made the final product.

Testing
After ideating, due to the lack of knowledge of dog behaviors, I am always not sure about whether it works or not. So testing is especially important in this project.
First test
On the first test, dogs are confused and curious about the car, but due to the food drop is too short, so there is not enough incentive to let them get close to the car.
Second test
On the second test, dogs are not even curious about the car. I wish to gain the distance of the food drop to attract the dogs, but the food is way too small to let them pay attention to.
Third test
On the third test, we change the size of the dog food and the distance of the food drop. The change successfully attracted the dog, and let the dog have the will to get close to the car. Through 3 weeks of experimenting, the dog is able to get close to us.
Fourth test
To make sure that it is not due to all the experiments were done at the same place, causing the dogs are used to new objects, we went to other areas in Tainan to do the fourth test. After 2 weeks, I gain a bit trust from the dogs and can get close to the dogs.

Ideation
In order to make the whole process smoother, I decided to add elements that are related to what passengers will need to know. Through ideating, I added a warning cone, a vest, and a collar.
Prototype
I tested the size of the warning cone and made sure that the assembly of the whole cone is easy to operate. Through testing, I get that about 65 centimeters is a balance between being carried around and being seen.
I checked on the layout of the vest and did some adjustments to meet different body types.
On the collar, I tried the foam texture to make sure it is foldable. While adding some support in the inside of the foam, the whole collar can be folded so that dogs won't resist that much.
