WHEN CHAMPAGNE WAS VERY,

VERY, VERY, HARD TO FIND

a catalog celebrating the wonderful wines of Champagne, Burgundy and the Rhône would not have been possible. Our country had just enacted the Volstead Act on January 16th of 1920, which led to a 13-year ban on the production and distribution of alcoholic beverages on US soil. Well, officially it did, but in that gap a host of substitutes rushed to fill the void. Moonshine from the South, bathtub gin from the northeast and wine bricks from California began to make their presence known, all increasing America’s desire for “the real thing.” Enter bootleggers, and our cover “model” this month, Piper-Heidsieck’s Prohibition bottle in honor of Prohibition’s 100-year anniversary.

The most awarded Champagne house of the 20th century wasn’t about to let moonshine be the drink du jour. Creatively using the French territory Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon off the east coast of Canada as a hub, Piper-Heidsieck was one of the first European producers to make inroads with bootleggers there that would bring its Champagne into the US. Once into the country, Piper-Heidsieck’s Champagne found its way into more than more than 30,000 speakeasies and scores of social luminaries who traded wine bricks for French cuvées. In time the “noble experiment” would come to an end, due in large part to Old World producers like Piper-Heidsieck, who reminded Americans that the freedom to choose how we live our lives is part and parcel with our identity. So raise a glass to ingenuity, quality and some of the world’s finest wines.

“Too much of anything is bad. But too much Champagne is just right.” –Mark Twain

CHAMPAGNE

What is it about Champagne that’s so wondrous?! Is it the centuries of phenomenal production by some of the most storied brands in the world? Maybe it’s the fact that Champagne pairs beautifully with anything from fried chicken to caviar and everything in between? We think it’s all of that AND because the world needs a little more POP lately, and Champagne always delivers. From grand houses to boutique growers, Champagne is as elegant, savory and sparkling as you need it to be.

Dom Pérignon “This was by some margin the largest range of wines I tasted from any producer in the 2018 vintage: that it was also one of the most consistent speaks volumes about the attention to detail and technical expertise of Barnier and his team.” –William Kelley, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

Despite being synonymous with Champagne, Dom Pérignon’s lore is often misunderstood. Sure, “DP” is named after a 17th Century Benedictine monk, but no, Dom Pierre Pérignon did not invent Champagne (he did improve the secondary fermentation process that makes it so irresistible). Unlike other Champagnes, a bottle of Dom Pérignon is always a single vintage Champagne, which means in challenging years they do not release one. In fact, between 1921 and 2009 only 42 vintage Champagnes were produced. And while Champagne’s AOC requires all producers to age their wines a minimum of 3 years, Dom Pérignon’s more strict internal guidelines require a minimum of 7 years aging, and often they exceed a decade, making them both decadent and elegant upon release.

“Come quickly, I am tasting the stars.” –Dom Pérignon

Billecart-Salmon “It’s clear that this is a house that’s going from strength to strength.” –William Kelley, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate The historic Champagne house was founded in 1818 and remains one of the few family-owned grande marque producers today. As pioneers of the “cold settling” process prior to fermentation that adds an understated elegance to their wines, this endears them to enthusiasts and aficionados, alike. Allocations remain limited, so much so that this Champagne’s former importer was known to ask buyers what other Champagnes they carried before selling them a prized bottle of Billecart-Salmon! La Grande Dame 2012 By Yayoi Kusama “La Grande Dame 2012 is a wine that is both precise and delicate. It is playful, lively, laughing…Its aging potential is immense, it is a wine whose tasting makes me vibrate.” –Didier Mariotti, Veuve Clicquot Cellar Master

Piper-Heidsieck “A legend in the making.” –Jeb Dunnuck One of Piper-Heidsieck’s most exceptional qualities is the attention to detail afforded both their vintage and non-vintage Champagnes. Non-vintage Champagne Chef de Cave, Émilien Boutillat, refers to the art of creating a perfect NV blend as adding a “dash of seduction,” a nod to the sampling of over 100 Champagne crus to decode the blocks that add structure or complexity, dimension and depth. Piper-Heidsieck’s Rare Champagne production has been equally finicky, declaring only eleven vintages in over four decades as being worthy of a single vintage bottling. Rare Champagne Chef de Cave, Régis Camus – arguably the greatest Champagne winemaker ever - selects and combines terroirs according to their expressiveness, not their rank in the scale of Premiers and Grands Crus, allowing sweet spices, fresh tropical fruits, smoky accents, chalky minerality and gourmand notes to harmonize in the glass.

Veuve Clicquot is surely an icon, and its star is La Grande Dame. Never shy of its love for the Pinot Noir grape, La Grande Dame is its perfect expression, comprised of an unheard-offor-Champagne 90% of the blend in the ’08 and ’12 vintages. But this is no brute – picked early and blended with Chardonnay grapes from Grand Cru plots in Bouzy, Verzenay and Verzy, it’s actually a wine of quiet restraint, light, yet with powerful character, a taut palate and lingering finish. And what better way to share it than adorned with the art of Japanese icon Yayoi Kusama, whose playful and colorful message matches Veuve Clicquot’s energy perfectly.

The rise in quality across all of Taittinger’s wines is well documented, especially with respect to the Comtes. This has much to do with the incredible land holdings that they have been able to collect over the decades. Taittinger now owns over 752 acres of vineyards, while most Grandes Marques Champagne houses own less than 75 acres. The ability to truly pick and choose... by vineyard, block and row, is sure to make a difference in control and quality of their wines.

“Champagne’s finest small growers have inspired and refreshed the region.” –William Kelley, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

Laherte Freres

Gatinois

One of the most exciting producers in Champagne today, Aurelien Laherte is one of the most creative, risk taking producers out there. Working with all 7 permitted varietals in Champagne, he crafts

GROWER CHAMPAGNE

wines that are wildly complex and fragrant, while showing more vinous character that really separates them from almost any other Champagne you have ever had.

For the value seekers, look no further! Gatinois has been making beautiful, clean and distinct Champagnes for 12 generations now, and the wines are simply amazing values. Embracing the early messaging of what Grower Champagnes accomplished by offering a great alternative to the Big Names, these wines offer up so much more… for so much less.

This is a stunning pair for the adventurous.

Marguet

Georges Laval

Benoit Marguet has earned quite the following and is inching closer to the “cult” level for his incredible array of Champagnes. His vineyards are mostly old vines in the famed areas of Ambonnay and Bouzy, both of which yield robust, flavorful and complex wines. His two entry level cuvees are a perfect window into the world of Benoit Marguet.

Vincent Laval farms some of the most important real estate in all of Champagne. His family’s property is documented to have never seen a single herbicide, pesticide or any other chemical in the vineyard… ever! These meticulously farmed vines yield hugely vibrant, concentrated wines that separate themselves from the crowd. This is a must try for the Champagne lover!

Almost 20 years ago, “Grower Champagne” began its steady rise as a critical subcategory of one of the most significant regions in the wine world. It began as a value replacement for “Big Name” Champagne houses, but it has matured beyond that and become a category that stands on its own with a crowd of adoring fans. Grower Champagne is better known in France as “Recoltant Manipulant” (or RM, as marked on bottles), where the producer makes the wines from estate grapes only. The producers to the right are just a few highlights of the great Growers we are excited about.

Pop! Pop! Pop! The Best Values in Spanish, Italian & American Bubbles

Bisol Prosecco “Perhaps the most famous name in Prosecco.” –Ian D’Agata, Vinous Bisol is one of the most famous Prosecco producers today, a family-owned winery growing grapes in Valdobbiadene since 1542. A lot of wisdom comes from 5 centuries of production, including understanding how the thin-skinned and sensitive Glera grape can harness the most subtle nuance of season and place to deliver a wide range of flavors. Bisol’s hillside vineyards provide just such variations, meaning that a taste through a Bisol vertical is a taste of Glera’s various expressions.

SPARKLING

Not all great sparkling wines come from Champagne. In fact, Italian Proseccos, Spanish Cavas and Californian sparklers have earned fans over the years, for both their quality and affordability. Today’s collection highlights three of the best in the world today, each synonymous with their regional AVAs, and each with centuries-old storied traditions that have helped to define how great sparkling wines can be.

BURGUNDY

Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey “It’s not often that a winemaker’s genius can be detected in a bottle of basic Bourgogne. It would be like finding one of the world’s greatest speeches written on the back of an envelope. And yet, when I tasted the Bourgogne Blanc from Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey…it was like discovering the vinous equivalent of the Gettysburg Address.” –Jancis Robinson

heights, and a remarkably consistent hand across a wide range of wines!

It’s extremely common for Burgundy collectors to gravitate towards the Grand Cru and best Premier Cru offerings for any producer, but Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey bucks that trend as his full range is bursting with quality no matter which cuvée you select. That care and consistency is what sets him apart from so many of his peers. Even more important is the value that he has been able to maintain over the years, continuing

Fans of exceptional, cellar-worthy Burgundy red and whites have much to be thankful for. The 2018 vintage was nothing short of spectacular. Early season concerns that the hot, dry summer would produce jammy reds and over-opulent whites turned out to be exactly the opposite. The wet winter provided deep water reserves, producing large yields of Chardonnay grapes that maintained their character by fighting so many other grapes on the vines for sunlight. As for Pinot Noir, old vines that dig deep into the water table turned out some of the most concentrated and ready to drink wines in recent memory. Even the Village and Regional wines were nuanced and expressive. In short, put your foot firmly on the proverbial Burgundy gas pedal and accelerate – this is a landmark vintage.

Domaine Louis Jadot needs no introduction; they have been officially making great Burgundy since 1859, although the family were vignerons prior to that, producing from their iconic Clos des Ursules vineyard as early as 1826. Somehow they are also among the most underrated wines in Burgundy – perhaps due to the sheer number of labels across their Village, Premier Cru and Grand Cru holdings, or for their distinct structure and age-ability. However, like Drouhin, they are always consistent, despite fads and cult wines commanding outrageous prices, and are arguably the most reliable of Burgundies.

William Kelley of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate has been championing these wines over the last two vintages: “That he still flies somewhat under the radar—at least relative to the quality to be found here—is perplexing. What’s more, that’s bound to change, and sooner rather than later, so readers shouldn’t hesitate to buy whatever bottles they can find.” Paul Pillot 457141 Bourgogne Blanc 2018 $35.99 457152 Chassagne Montrachet Clos St Jean 2018 $99.99 457142 Bourgogne Rouge 2018 $36.99 457150 Chassagne Montrachet Les Mazures 2018 $79.99

François Mikulski “There is much to like here.” –Neal Martin, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate Often it takes many years of tasting to fall head over heels in love with a Domaine, but on rare occasions you know right away, as was the case with Domaine François Mikulski. The grounded sense of farming and no nonsense winemak-

The Trapet family has been an important vineyard owner in the Côte de Nuits since 1870, and through the decades has quietly supplied the likes of Leroy and Drouhin with prized fruit from some of the most cherished vineyards of the Côte de Nuits. In the 1960s, this farmer turned producer quietly began releasing some of the top wines of the region and delivering them with relative value. Styles have changed over the decades, but this a house where over-extraction or heavy oak influences won’t be found. Quite the opposite, the wines are like the quiet gentleman of Gevrey himself: finessed, graceful, and classic expressions of the region. There is a distinct energy and purity to the wines that can only be attributed to the dedicated attention to biodynamics over the past few decades.

Joseph Drouhin “The Drouhin wines, never showy, manage to combine restraint and polish with an abundance of flavor interest.” –Robert Parker

“This is a lovely vintage for Maison Drouhin.” –John Gilman The historic 1880 Drouhin domaine is a symbol of what a classic, elegant and finessed Burgundy wine can be. Whether it be the difficult to come by Grands-Echezeaux, the Montrachet Marquis de Laguiche, Veronique’s overachieving Côte de Beaune Villages or their flagship Clos des Mouches Blanc (produced by Drouhin since 1928), any and all of their wines are often described as “impressively complex,” “wonderful,” and “outstanding.” Or as Robert Parker once noted “In top vintages Drouhin always does a superb job….”

Stéphane Ogier

“If you haven’t yet jumped on the Ogier bandwagon, it’s time to do so…” –Jeb Dunnuck It is simply impossible to get a healthy allocation of Ogier.

But the Ogier treasures extend well beyond the collector rarities – and we are presenting our latest Rhône discovery and one of the great values of the region. Earlier this year, the Zachys team was reintroduced to the 2017 Ogier Côtes du Rhône Le Temps Est Venu (92JD/92+ZBT) and at this

Alain Graillot Without a doubt, the Rhône Valley has been one of the fastest growing categories at Zachys over the last 5 years. To say it simply, we have never been so excited about the Rhône with its string of outstanding vintages in both the North and South since 2015. The good news is, many of the new releases from 2017 and 2018 rival those from 2015 in the North and even 2016 in the South. The catch? Volumes are down and there is not much wine to go around. That’s why we are highlighting our signature producers that should be snatched up early; from the North, Alain Graillot, Stéphane Ogier, and Paul Jaboulet Aîné, and from the South, Domaine de la Janasse, Domaine de Beaurenard, and Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe.

“Alain Graillot is a rarity – a newcomer who has made an impressive contribution to the quality of Rhône wines…” –Robert Parker These are must-haves for any Northern Rhône fan. After a stint at Domaine Dujac, and with significant influence from Gérard Jaboulet, Gérard Chave, and Marcel Guigal, Rhône-native Alain Graillot began making wine in Crozes-Hermitage in 1985. He quickly became one of the stars of the appellation, not to mention one of the foremost young winemakers reshaping the landscape with higher-quality wines. Today his son Maxime has taken over and in the limited 2018 vintage, we think he’s delivered some of the estate’s finest to date!
