achary’s Story It’s been a unique year, to say the least. 2020 has certainly brought its share of hardships, but what I know, is that hope will prevail. For all of the tribulations we have faced, I close the year with a greater love and appreciation for my team and my community than ever. We stepped up to ensure that, even in the midst of a global pandemic, life was still happening. We worked harder to ensure that even though our doors had to close temporarily, our hearts were always open. Whether it is online or in store, our job has never been more important. From health concerns to homeschooling, the gift of jewelry is one small way to show gratitude and say “thank you” to the people in our lives who have gone above and beyond the call of duty. There is a Greek word I know well that describes these virtues. While there is no formal translation, “philotimo” is loosely defined as the spirit of doing what is right. Philotimo encourages us to live not just for ourselves, but for others. This higher calling has played an important role in 2020, even going as far as to inspire a series of #1LoveAnnapolis videos produced to celebrate our community (which you’ll learn more about later in the magazine). Whether you call it “philotimo” or “one love,” kindness and compassion are the things we’ll carry with us into the new year. Before I sign off, I’d like to introduce two special people who you’ll see on the following pages. Erica has been by my side for over 20 years, and expresses the same loyalty and commitment to every client she touches. She and her new husband, Brett, are featured in our cover story and embody the strength of love, even in the midst of these difficult times. The other, you will see modeling beautifully our “Vault” jewelry line. I’ve known Lauren her entire life as her parents are dear friends of our family, and we are fortunate to feature her in our magazine again this year. Wishing you all health and happiness. Always.

Originally released over 55 years ago, the meaning behind Bob Marley’s iconic anthem One Love rings as true today as it did in 1965. As a plea for kindness and unity, “One Love” has become the official catchphrase of Zachary’s own Errol Daly, and can be heard in his every greeting. “One Love” also helped inspire Steve and Challie Samaras to produce a series of videos that celebrated the local businesses in our area as our community searched for a sense of normalcy in the face of the Coronavirus pandemic. They knew in their hearts that they needed to help give back and it grew into something they never imagined. Originating as a series of short videos about their favorite spots around town, the first being Lewnes’ Steakhouse in Eastport, the videos evolved to include interesting

background stories and fascinating historical anecdotes from over 50 locations in the area. The videos received tens of thousands of views, and Steve received hundreds of emails from around the country, and even the world, in support of the #1LoveAnnapolis videos. Another inspiration for the videos was philotimo, a word without literal English translation that both Steve and Challie know very well. Philotimo, considered to be the highest of all Greek virtues, is the belief that doing what is right, through unconditional love and respect, is the way of life. With Steve in front of the camera and Challie behind it, Zachary’s #1LoveAnnapolis videos created a shining light in the midst of an otherwise dark time, and helped lift the community they love so much.

an ode to old ships Corum Uncovers the Beauty of Mechanics Designed as a robust timepiece to complement luxury offshore boating, Corum presents the Admiral AC-One 45 Openwork Automatic with an exquisitely crafted skeletonized dial. A new movement, caliber CO 297, was developed in-house by Corum specifically for this model. The bridges visible on the dial side were designed to be in harmony with the dodecagonalshaped case, as well as the silhouettes of the nautical pennants. A sub-dial displaying small seconds is at 9 o’clock, while the power reserve indicator sits at 3 o’clock. The Admiral AC-One 45 Openwork Automatic is presented in two variants. The first, with a case crafted in grade 5 Titanium to add lightness of the overall design, while evoking a futuristic vibe. The case of the second variation pairs contrasting rose gold with black PVD-coated titanium, giving the watch a bolder and sportier feel. The back of the movement is visible through the screwed-in open back. Both timepieces offer water resistance up to 100 meters, while the movement has a power reserve of 42 hours.
Taking Mechanical Beauty a Step Further: Admiral AC-One 45 Openwork Automatic Tourbillon For aficionados who prefer something more complicated and gravity-defying, Corum has prepared the Admiral AC-One 45 Openwork Tourbillon. Placed at six o’clock, the tourbillon showcases not only the beautiful heartbeat of the movement but also Corum’s artistry and flair in technical watchmaking. Both the Admiral AC-One 45 Openwork Automatic and Openwork Tourbillon also feature redesigned straps. Crafted with rubber on the surface and synthetic textile on its underside, these bi-material straps are designed to seamlessly integrate with the lugs. This not only makes wearing the watch more comfortable but also protects the lugs and strap.
The Corum Admiral Bronze: An Ode to Old Ships Unveiled in 1960, the Admiral collection embodies Corum’s maritime watchmaking heritage. Although it has always been loyal to its DNA, Corum has never been afraid to set sail for distant shores. Faithful to the nautical roots of the Admiral collection, the Admiral 42 Bronze showcases both a nautical design and watchmaking mechanics and features the 12 pennant-shaped hour markers on the dial. This story starts over 20 years ago. The Beginning In 1998, Erica, a beloved member of the Zachary’s family, found herself with a new roommate: the head chef of (what used to be) Main Ingredient. While Brett always had an eye for Erica, it took a few years for their stars to align. Their real first date was in 2018 on the Fourth of July, and they were engaged on New Years Eve the next year. With a wedding set for April 24, 2021, spring rolled around and it was time to get planning. However, the excitement of planning soon took a backseat to the Coronavirus pandemic. In an effort to keep their spirits high, Erica and Brett decided to go get their marriage license, and when Brett suggested they go ahead and get married, that’s just what they did.
The Wedding On June 2nd, Erica and Brett got married on the pier in their neighborhood where they keep their boat, Retriever. With an officiant of the state in attendance via zoom, and their closest family and friends on the call, the pair said their vows. With a last minute bouquet by The Gateway Florist, a cake from Main & Market, and a celebratory take-out dinner from the Chart House, the two were officially wed.
The Ever After They took their boat to the Eastern Shore and enjoyed four days in St. Michaels. It wasn’t the wedding they had originally planned, but in many ways, it was even more special. And, perhaps, even more memorable. June 2nd was the eye of the storm, and served as a reminder to us all that love always prevails.
Strongly Linked Together This year marks the 20th anniversary for Marco Bicego. To honor this, Marco is putting a new twist on one of his very first, and favorite coil collections, Marrakech. "It's a new, different, and contemporary collection, Marrakech Onde. The main element is our signature light 18K yellow gold coil deliberately shaped into irregularly linked ovals and accented with diamond pave.� Marco has decided to use this return to his roots as an opportunity to create a modern interpretation of the classic link. His classic Marrakech coil is hand twisted into an oval link, creating a light and modern twist on the classic chain link. Marco is always inspired to design jewelry that can be worn anywhere and every day. His latest Marrakech Onde collection is perfect for any occasion. In addition to his 20th anniversary launch, standing together and supporting those most in need has been a focus of this year. In Italy, Marco made a local donation to the San Bortolo Hospital of Vicenza, where the country was severely impacted by the COVID-19 crisis; this region being the heart and soul of Marco. JEWELRY DESIGNER. MIDDLE SISTER. FAIRY GODMOTHER. I’ve been a custom bridal and fine jewelry designer for the better part of a decade at our downtown Annapolis location. The opportunity to work with the people of our city, and beyond, and to design one-of-a-kind pieces to be treasured for generations is what gets me out of bed every morning. Well, that and the kids need to eat. And the cats, too. And the dishes need to be done. And I need coffee. But I digress, the work I do inspires me. As does the family, and most specifically the sisters, in my life. Back in May, I got a text from one of my favorite clients, Lance Baird. He told me his wife was pregnant with their third daughter and I could not be happier for them. For a little background, I was there the first time this soon-to-be father of three walked into Zachary’s to “look,” and he has been stuck with me ever since. I helped him with her classic and beautiful engagement ring, worked with them both on custom wedding bands, and have had the pleasure of working with them to celebrate the important moments in their lives. I have watched as they brought two girls into their wonderful family, seen them relocate, start a new business and thrive. It’s one of the great joys of my job, to see love grow and be a part of sharing it. And now, here comes the third daughter. I can’t imagine life without my sisters. I am so thankful for them. I’m what you would call a classic middle child. A little bit peace-keeper, a little bit instigator. But mostly empathetic and easy to get along with.
I am excited for my client’s girls to share what it means to be a set of three sisters. Of course they will bicker from time to time, but they will share an unparalleled companionship for life. When they are little, they’ll get to make up elaborate stories and games, crack each other up with funny dances and sing along to their favorite movies. My sisters and I used to pretend we were the three good fairies from Sleeping Beauty: Flora, Fauna and Merryweather. My oldest sister would wear the red of Flora, I wore green like Fauna, and my little sister, the feisty blue of Merryweather. We even wore those colors one day during our Disney trip last fall and got my daughters involved as Aurora and Maleficent. What a lovely coincidence I couldn’t help but have some fun with. While their lovely mom will get the custom designed piece of her dreams... Here is one of mine, inspired by the three good fairies she will have dancing around her living room soon enough!

While we always love to see our friends in person, the pandemic forced us to find new, safe ways to be available to our customers. While our doors are back open, we are still offering virtual appointments to better, more safely, and more conveniently serve you.
Sip & Shop Events On May 6th, Zachary’s debuted our very first Facebook Live “Sip & Shop” event. As a means for customers to safely and comfortably tune in from home and spend an hour with their friends from the store, “Zachary’s Hour with Friends” is a onehour escape that includes beautiful jewelry, fun banter, discounts up to 20%, and more. Reveal Party Last year, Zachary’s developed a contest in which customers who purchased a beautiful, rare, and responsibly-sourced Forevermark diamond had a chance to become our very first Forevermark Fiancé couple. The winner was to receive a free engagement photoshoot by Wendy Hickok, an upscale dinner at Harry Browne’s, a couples massage from Even Keel, and a two-page spread in this magazine. 20 couples qualified, and the lucky couples were invited to our Forevermark Fiancé Reveal Party on July 30th. During this socially-distanced, yet festive game night, our couples enjoyed a cocktail hour and played the Nearly-Wed Game, a version of the Newlywed Game where the couples were challenged to see just how much they knew about their soon-to-be spouses. The winners of the game, Michael

and Danielle, took home a basket of Mr. and Mrs. mugs and other wedding-themed items. At the end of the evening, the pairs spun a customized gameshow spinner with each couples’ name on it to determine who would become our first Forevermark Fiancé couple! Earlier this year, 20 couples competed to become Zachary’s 2020 Forevermark Fiancé. On July 30th, we announced our winners at our Reveal Party. This is Wes and Caroline’s story.
Caroline and Wes met while working at Kona at the Inner Harbor in Baltimore. Caroline was a hostess working her way through nursing school, and Wes was a manager of the restaurant. In September of 2015, Wes admitted he needed the perfect reason to ask her out and knew she was a football fan. Even though he’s an Eagles fan and she prefers the Cowboys, he knew it would work. So she asked her parents to watch her little boy and went to hang out at his house for Sunday football - just the two of them. They’ve been inseparable ever since.
Caroline loves that he’s funny, witty, and a gentleman. She wasn’t looking for love but it found her. Wes loves the devotion she shows for her son. And, once he met Braxton, it solidified her feelings for him. He eventually asked her father for her hand in marriage. “Hoppy” was the only one that knew what was coming. During a family weekend at her parents’ beach house, Wes surprised Caroline. As she was sitting on the couch, Wes appeared with two adorable helpers. She was about to ask what was happening when her six-yearold, Braxton, came into the room wearing a shirt that read, “Will you” and Beckham, their three-year-old, ran around wearing a shirt that read, “marry Daddy?” However, three-year-olds will be three-year-olds and Beckham just couldn’t sit still long enough for Caroline to put the message together. Finally, her brother picked Beckham up, and held him still long enough for Caroline to figure it out.

In recent months, Forevermark diamonds carry even more meaning as they help to contribute to COVID-19 relief aid in De Beers Group’s partner countries and pay tribute to those on the front lines.
To date, Forevermark’s parent company, De Beers Group has contributed more than $5 million to support COVID-19 relief efforts across its diamond producing countries in South Africa, Botswana, Namibia and Canada. These funds have aided local communities with medical supplies and clinical support, logistical support, vulnerability assessment support plans, food for households in need, water supply to communities, and COVID-19 awareness and education. A portion of this relief is specifically dedicated to assist women’s shelters and support
organizations to respond to an increase in genderbased violence resulting from lockdown and social distancing measures.
In the US, Forevermark honored front-line essential workers and everyday heroes with their “For all that You Do” sweepstakes, giving away five pairs of diamond studs from the Forevermark Tribute™ Collection. The winners included a doctor from New York City; a nurse from Louisville, Kentucky; a store clerk from Oak Hill, West Virginia; a veterinary technician from Ames, Iowa; and a nursing student from Port Huron, Michigan. What it’s all about. BECAUSE AT THE END OF THE DAY, IT ’S ALL ABOUT GRATITUDE. This year, we owe a debt of gratitude to our friends and customers for reminding us that life is still happening, and love is still open. Even though the world seemed to close down, our community continued to get engaged, celebrate birthdays and anniversaries, and find special ways to thank the heroes in our lives. Over the past year, the clock seemed to slow down. We had less places to be and more time to reflect. We focused on what was most important and found moments worth celebrating. One of our customers, now part of our Zachary’s family, decided to take their daughter to the Greenbrier for a special 18th birthday getaway. It wasn’t a typical celebration. There weren’t crowds of friends or pieces of cake to be passed. It was an intimate occasion that they’ll never forget. At dinner, Beth not only found a pearl in her oyster, but her parents surprised her with a white box with a red bow from Zachary’s. Inside, she found a pair of beautiful diamond earrings, her first diamonds, from her parents. As a symbol of purity, eternity, and the indestructible bond of family, the diamonds from her parents are a legacy, much like family itself. Diamonds are made under pressure, and it takes grit to make a pearl. Much like this past year, we believe the hardships we’ve faced have produced something beautiful: A greater appreciation of family and friends. Happy birthday, Beth. The world is your oyster.
