achary’s Story As this issue went to print, we got to thinking: why do we do what we do? Why do we wake up early and stay up late? Why do we fly half way around the world to get our diamonds directly from the source? Why do we spend hours and hours helping young couples design the perfect engagement ring? The answer, we discovered, was simple: we love what we do. In fact, love is at the center of everything we do at Zachary’s, which is why we’re so excited to introduce #storyofyes—a profile of several couples, including my wife, Challie, and I. We’re celebrating an important milestone this year, our 15th wedding anniversary. But we’re not the only ones. My sister, Evangeline, and her husband, Mike, also just celebrated their 15th anniversary, and my sister, Daphne, and her husband, Dan, just celebrated 25 years. Family is everything to us at Zachary’s. That’s why you’ll see several members of our team featured in following pages. You’ll meet Erica, who’s been with us for over 15 years, and get a behind-the-scenes peek at the process of crafting one-of-a-kind custom jewelry. You’ll learn the story of Nick and Nicki—a true Annapolis love story if there ever was one—and be whisked away to a modern-day fairytale starring our very own Paige. The world is a very different place today than it was when Zachary’s first opened in 1992, and it’s easy to think that romance isn’t what it used to be, that chivalry doesn’t exist anymore. But around here, we beg to differ, because we see it every single day—in the faces of a young couple who come in to purchase an engagement ring, and the tenderness of a couple who are celebrating a major anniversary. Thank you for being a loyal customer. We hope you enjoy the issue.

USNA Cruise Night This year, Zachary’s hosted its first annual boat cruise to show appreciation to all the midshipmen who purchased their class ring gemstones from Zachary’s. In its 35 years in business, Zachary’s has sold tens of thousands of gemstones to USNA midshipmen and today over a third of midshipmen purchase their class ring gemstones from Zachary’s. Held the night before Ring Dance aboard the Catherine Marie, everyone enjoyed themselves, despite the stormy weather, with dancing, dining, and an oversized dart board with prizes. One of the evening’s many highlights was when one lucky midshipman won a $5,000 Corum Admirals Watch. Thank you to Watermark Cruises, Corum Watch Brands, Main & Market, and Hobo for supporting this great event. Photos by Wendy Hickok Photography

Adventures in the cote ^

D'ivoire Our founder finds home where he least expects it.

T

he year was 1985 and Steve Samaras sat at the bar of the Hotel Ivoire drinking a beer, having just returned from one of the mining sites he oversaw some 350 miles west. It had been a long drive—eight hours of washed-out, bumpy roads— and he was glad to be back in Abidjan, talking to the hotel’s bartender, who, along with the concierge and bellhop, was the only one who spoke English. As he spoke with bartender, he overheard a couple at the other end of the bar speaking English and walked over to introduce himself. The bar was in an atrium with a glass ceiling, and as he walked over, the light caught something on the man’s hand. Steve couldn’t be sure, but it looked an awful

lot like a United States Naval Academy class ring. “So, when’s the last time you were in Annapolis?” Steve asked, pulling up a chair. The man just about fell out of his seat. Steve explained how he had recognized the ring’s distinctive center sapphire stone with diamonds around it. And, as it turned out, the man had graduated from the Academy several years before and was temporarily stationed in the Côte d’Ivoire. They talked for a while longer, glad to have found a little slice of home on the other side of the world.

Severna Park’s Erica Christian brings one-of-a-kind works of art to life.

B

uying an engagement ring is a bit like purchasing a house. You can buy one that’s already built or build it from the ground up. The latter may be more challenging, but is usually more rewarding. “When the house is finished, you feel like you played a part in it—so it’s even more yours,” says Erica Christian, jewelry designer at Zachary’s Severna Park store. “And I think people feel the same way about commissioning a piece of jewelry. There’s more of you in it.” Opened in 2010 to expand production capability, Zachary’s Severna Park location produces custom, cost-effective pieces of jewelry that are

as unique as the person they are made for. So, whether you’re looking to create a diamond engagement ring, restyle a pair of drop-dead estate earrings, or something else, they have the resources and expertise in place to give you exactly what you want. And if you don’t know what you want, they can help with that, too. As jewelry designer, Erica acts as an interpreter, guiding customers through the process—from the initial consultation and sketch to the estimate and computer animated design (CAD) to the finished product. “Usually with something like an engagement ring, they have an idea and it’s just bringing that idea to fruition,” she says. “Even if they don’t think they know what they want, they usually do. What’s she like? Is she active? Is she artistic? Does she like things that are different? There are always ways to lead them with confidence toward something that they’ll really like and will be perfect for her.” To learn more about custom design, visit ZacharysJewelers.com/Custom-Design or call 410-544-4005. hey say it’s the thought that counts and three local kids know this well after winning Zachary’s annual Mother’s Day contest. Winners Allie Straub, Noah Cover, and Lena Stern, learned a lesson in generosity when their designs were selected to be transformed into one-of-a-kind Mother’s Day gifts. “A lot of the pieces this year were really modern,” said Erica Christian, jewelry designer at Zachary’s Severna Park location, where the contest is held every year. “I don’t know if that’s their art teacher’s influence or their mothers. It’s always nice, though, because the kids have a reason for everything they do. They’ll say, ‘I put this here because she likes this and it will remind her of this.’” Now in its sixth year, the contest encourages local elementary school students to design a special

piece of jewelry for their mom. And while there are only three official winners out of the hundreds of contestants that enter every year from 15 area schools, everyone is a winner. The semifinalists are invited to Zachary’s the week before Mother’s Day to see their drawings on display, receive small gifts and goodies, and hear the winners announced aloud. The top three designs are then brought to life by the Zachary’s team to be presented as oneof-a-kind Mother’s Day gifts. “It’s such a great time,” said Erica. “Even the kids who don’t win are grateful. They put so much thought into the design and it teaches them what it’s like to really give something that comes from the heart.” To learn more about custom design, visit ZacharysJewelers.com/Custom-Design

For More Than Just The Season

J

ewelry often characterized as classic is not generally subject to the shifting tides of seasonal trends. On the contrary, a statement, in relation to fashion, is defined as noting or relating to an item of jewelry, clothing, etc., that stands out usually because of its large size or bold design. Now, imagine a collection where a statement piece is also described as timeless. These words are not often uttered in the same sentence, at least until now. As we embark on a new season full of fashionable but fleeting trends, ALOR introduces a Fall 2017 Collection that makes a bold statement yet effortlessly stands the test of time.

24 | Zachary’s Jewelers Magazine 2017

ALOR is best known for their fine jewelry collection of cable style designs, combined with 18kt gold for a high fashion and elegant look. The iconic brand was born in Southern California in 1979 by husband and wife team, Jack and Sandy Zemer. Inspired by the majestic and serene landscape of Southern California, ALOR forms a unique marriage of 18kt gold, cable and diamonds to create timeless, yet modern pieces. One of their most recognizable designs, stackable cable bangles in grey, yellow, rose and black, are a must-have for every wardrobe and serve as the perfect staple. Fall 2017 brings the exciting launch of four new cable colors in ALOR’s

popular 3mm bangle size. These colors, which include blueberry navy, carnation, steel gray and burgundy coffee, stack beautifully together as well as with ALOR’s signature cable colors. These fresh new hues reinvent a classic style in a unique yet still refined color palate. In continuing ALOR’s celebration of color, Fall 2017 brings the bold Burano Collection. According to Co-Founder and CEO, Jack Zemer, “the use of color conveys a positive energy and happiness which is all around us in our daily lives.” The Burano Collection is a celebration of color and of life, made to brighten up and energize ALOR’s modern style. Inspired by the designer’s love for color, Burano is named after Italy’s most colorful city. The bright island of Burano is famous for its colorful fishermen’s cottages, which breathe life and love into its Italian community. This collection features beautiful colored gemstones in an effort to do the same for the ALOR customer. The precious gemstones, which include amethyst, blue topaz, citrine, black onyx and white topaz create a bright color statement that mimics the city of Burano, while still conveying a wearable sophistication. The classic cable combined with radiant stones introduces an energy to your style that will withstand other fashionable fads. The theme of bold yet wearable pieces continues in the season’s statement rings that command noticeable elegance. ALOR’s Fall ring collection includes creative designs like the new wave statement ring, peek-a-boo style band and horizontal color block. These inventive

styles, all crafted with ALOR’s signature cable, 18kt gold and diamonds, serve as an undeniable statement with a subtle sophistication that will ring true for season’s to come. Each statement ring is a personal luxury that is cool enough to truly covet, yet classic enough to cherish forever. Everlasting style is not only for the fashionable woman. ALOR’s fastest growing segment, their Gentlemen’s Collection, is specifically designed with the fashion forward man in mind. In this collection, color and texture continue to play an immense role in making a statement. Their new modern men’s collection portrays sophisticated street style using fresh textures and beading. New materials include lapis, black onyx, tigers eye, black and white mother of pearl, and stingray. These impressive materials perfect the art of looking sharp with an unusual twist. With quality at the core of any ALOR design, their Gentlemen’s Collection will add the perfect amount of flair to the style conscious man. ALOR’s ability to blend a bold statement with a timeless feel is truly one-of-a-kind. Their hand crafted creations are not only uniquely beautiful, but possess a versatility that can be taken from day to night or from season to season. ALOR’s new Fall 2017 Collection is an artful collaboration of timeless yet modern and bold pieces for the sophisticated woman or man.

STEVE & CHALLIE Over the years, Steve Samaras has advised thousands of young men on getting engaged. As the owner of Zachary’s, it’s a role he’s comfortable in—serving more as a coach than a jeweler. But when it came time for him to propose to his then girlfriend, Challie, in 2002, he found he was just as anxious as all of them. It was the day after his sister Evangeline’s wedding and everyone was taking turns recounting their favorite part of the weekend. When it was Challie’s turn, Steve turned to her and said that hers hadn’t happened yet. Confused, she asked what he meant, at which point he presented her with the ring. Tears flowed. She couldn’t believe it. The ring, too, posed a particular challenge. Being a jeweler, he knew it had to be spectacular. After much thought, he decided on a threestone ring with a larger center stone flanked by two smaller stones— all emerald cuts because that’s what her mom had. Steve’s ring was another matter. One of the jobs Challie gave him for the wedding was to pick out his wedding band. “He borrowed a ring from the store to get married in,” Challie recalls. “But he didn’t like it and ended up selling it after the wedding. For years, I pestered him to get a new ring. Then, when his dad passed away a few years later, he inherited his father’s wedding band and he’s worn that ever since because it’s a part of his dad.” So, what’s the secret to staying together all these years? “Everyone has their own formula,” says Steve. “What works for one couple may not work for another. But we mainly just enjoy being around one another. We do everything together. She’s the love of my life.” When not working at Zachary’s, Steve and Challie enjoy traveling (especially to Bermuda), playing golf, and spending time with family. And today, when a scared-looking, young man walks into Zachary’s looking for an engagement ring, Steve tells him the same thing he always has had, albeit with a greater sense of empathy. “Make it special,” he says. “You’ll remember it for the rest of your life—and so will she.”

NICK & NICKI Nicki Bouchard believes in love at first sight. For her, it began one hot August Saturday in 2002, when she and a coworker were cut from waiting tables at Middleton’s Tavern and went next door to Armadillos, where their friend, John, was working. It was busy, but over the commotion, he pointed to the other end of the bar, where a handsome, young man named Nick sat. “I was in love about 15 minutes later,” Nicki says, recalling that day. They talked all night, until closing time—about their hopes and dreams and leaving Annapolis once and for all. And then they walked up the street and had their first kiss in front of Zachary’s. In the next few years, they moved to California, like they had talked about that night, and lived in San Diego for a few years. They returned to Annapolis in 2007 (Nicki is a third generation Annapolitan) and got engaged Christmas Day. Shortly after the birth of their first daughter, Isla, Nicki started working at Zachary’s. Zachary’s owner, Steve Samaras, and her father were roommates at the University of Maryland and she had wanted to work there since she was a teenager. During her first few months, she brought Isla to work every day in a small bassinet she kept by her desk. “Back then, I always called him ‘Uncle Stephen’ but now I just call him that when I want something,” she jokes. When not at work, Nicki and Nick are busy renovating their new home and starting their side project, Severn River Brewing Company.

JOHN & MICHELE In a world where everything is on social media, it’s nice when couples save something for themselves, especially when it’s something special like an engagement. John and Michele McGovern know this well.

Photo by Harriet Manis Adam Photography

It was Christmas Eve and they were walking to McGarvey’s, where Michele’s family hosts an annual brunch. Before they arrived, John led Michele to City Dock—near where they had first met several years before—and got down on one knee. Without anyone else around, he popped the question and she accepted. “At that very moment our lives changed forever,” says Michele. “It was truly magical and I’ll never forget it.” After, they walked to McGarvey’s and celebrated with family and friends, and Michele showed off her ring—a beautiful, custom ring John designed himself. Michele isn’t the only member of her family who calls Zachary’s her jeweler, so John knew it was a place he could trust to give Michele a ring she’d treasure forever. And as they start their new life together, they’re sure to mark many more milestones with pieces from Zachary’s—whether they post it on Facebook or not.

TRAVIS & ASHLEY If walls could talk, the pole barn on the Katski’s family farm would probably have some pretty interesting things to say. After all, it’s where Travis asked Ashley to spend the rest of their lives together. Now in their fifth year of marriage, they’re as in love today as they were when they first met at work almost 9 years ago. Like most office romances, they flirted respectively at first, Travis making any excuse he could to talk to her. They both felt there was something there and they weren’t the only ones. “His mom told me, she knew we’d be together,” says Ashley. Throughout their time together, they’ve used jewelry to celebrate special occasions—from a custom engagement ring to the diamond necklace she received last Christmas. “It’s amazing how jewelry from Zachary’s can light up a lady’s eyes,” says Travis. “And that’s not just my wife, but my mom, aunt, and daughter, too.” If walls could talk, we think they’d agree.

Local Designer, Lisa Nik, Opens Up About Her Inspirations

F

or over a decade, Lisa Nik has combined colored gemstones, diamonds and other exquisite elements to create inspired and fashionable jewelry for all occasions. Zachary’s Jewelers was one of the first stores to carry the collection and we recently spoke to her about her start in jewelry design, her predictions for the future, and why Maryland holds a special place in her heart.

How did you become a jewelry designer? After graduating college, I wanted a career that combined creativity, business and travel. My first job was with an Italian jewelry company that established an operation in New York and there I realized developing and designing new product categories was my passion. With instincts and experience, I turned many ideas into best sellers. Fifteen years later, I started my own company.

As a world traveler, how do the places you go and people you meet inspire you? One of the most important things is listening to the women I design for. By better understanding what they want, I constantly improve my brand. Many of the places that carry my collection are in resorts and my use of blue gemstones represents that. The blue topaz and aquamarine stones attract those vacationing near water. When I was in Florence, I bought beautiful stationery and when I created the Twisted Wires collection, I had that in mind. The Twisted Wires also has Grecian influences, perhaps from my time in Greece. My love of colored gemstones began on my first trip to Brazil. I walked through halls of gemstones that looked like candy. The

tourmalines and aquamarine were so vivid, I didn’t want to look away. I fully understood then what color could evoke and decided to use this in my collection.

What is your connection to Maryland and how would you describe women’s style here? I was born in Washington, DC and grew up in Rockville, MD and find the tastes of women in this area to be elegant and refined. The amount of professional women here has inspired me to create jewelry that works during the workday and for evening wear. Often, jewelry is the only bold statement women can make dressing for work, so I always keep that in mind. But my jewelry isn’t just for professional women. It works for women of all ages. Mothers and grandmothers often buy it for their daughters, daughters-in-law, and granddaughters.

Are there any upcoming projects you can share? Women love colored stones and I’ll continue developing one-of-a-kind pieces that use colored gemstones from around the world. I‘ll experiment with different cuts and shapes to expand the Rocks Collection with fresh interpretations. I’m also interested in yellow gold, so I’ll be offering bangles, earrings, and chains that work well with the Rocks Collection. The Asymmetric Collection is perhaps my most unusual collection. It lets me experiment with non-matching shapes and colors to create truly unique pieces. I’ll continue to use opals, tourmalines, kyanite, sapphires, and peridot that appeal to gemstone connoisseurs and collectors. FORE

INTRODUCING

In 2008, the De Beers Group of Companies launched Forevermark, effectively changing the diamond industry forever. Now, for the first time ever, Zachary’s is offering these rare, responsibly sourced diamonds to its customers. Below, we tell you a little bit more about what makes Forevermark so special and why we’re so excited to carry it.

For Forevermark diamonds, “one in a million” is only a slight exaggeration. Because less than 1% of the world’s diamonds are deemed worthy of the Forevermark inscription—a microscopic inscription 1/5000th the depth of a human hair that denotes these diamond’s beauty, rarity, and responsible sourcing. With over 125 years of history behind it, Forevermark is committed to the unwavering pursuit of the 46 | Zachary’s Jewelers Magazine 2017

Stand Out with a Paraiba Piece by

While not as well-known as some other stones, there’s a whole lot more to this hidden gem than meets the eye.

N

amed after the north-eastern state in Brazil where it was first discovered in the 1980s, Paraiba (“pear-ah-ee-bah”) is a rare type of tourmaline known for its distinctive color. While tourmaline can be found in a remarkable range of colors—from dark olive green to bright pink and warm yellow—this specific type of tourmaline is notable for its intense blue and green tones, reminiscent of Caribbean waters.

As one of the rarest gemstones in the Simon G collection, we’re excited to offer this incredible stone in a variety of cuts and settings—from takeyour-breath-away rings to elegant pendants and stunning statement earrings. Perhaps no other stone better showcases Simon’s passion for unique, one-of-a-kind pieces of art, which can be passed down and cherished for generations. Learn more at SimonGJewelry.com.

Ray & Kelsey

A

lthough they grew up in the same town, attended the same high school, and had a number of mutual friends, Ray Hensberger and Kelsey Nordhoff didn’t meet until they were in their 30s. But when they did finally meet, they quickly made up for lost time. “It’s hard to put into words,” says Kelsey, remembering those first few months they started dating. “The more time we spent together, the more we realized how much we had in common and how well we clicked. When you know, you know!” The day Ray proposed, a car took her to get her nails done and go shopping. That evening, she was driven to a mysterious location, where they danced to their favorite song and Ray got down on one knee. Needless to say, she said yes. 4:37 PM, 10/3/2007 “This is where it all started. She was sitting on the bench, reading a book and I got up the courage to talk to her. I asked what she was reading. She pretended not to notice me. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy, but nothing worth doing ever is. We started talking. Before I knew it, it was getting dark. I asked her for her number and she tore out a blank page from her book and found a pen in her purse. I called that night (from my flip phone) to see if it was a real number (it was) and the rest, as they say, is history.” For most, it’s just a bench. For us, it’s a beginning. Because at the end of the day it’s all about our customers.

S

teve Samaras has been in the jewelry business for a long time and if there’s one thing he’s learned it’s the importance of always going the extra mile for his customers. When a small diamond falls out of a customer’s ring, he doesn’t charge to replace it. The way he sees it, it’s the least he can do. If a couple comes in to look at engagement rings and one of them is waiting outside with their dog, Steve invites them inside and makes sure the dog gets a treat. You may not think a dog would be welcome in a high-end jewelry store, but you’d be wrong. In fact, local dogs are known to drag their owners to Zachary’s. During the holidays, there are always gifts under the tree and kids come back year after year because they know there’s something special waiting for them.

Given the store’s central location, Steve knows that he not only represents Zachary’s, but all of Annapolis. When someone asks for a dinner recommendation, he doesn’t just recommend a restaurant. He picks up the phone and makes the reservation for them. And it isn’t just Steve who goes the extra mile for his customers. The entire Zachary’s staff goes above and beyond in everything they do. “We take pride in what we do,” says Steve. “And because of that people want to buy their jewelry from us. Because it’s us—it’s Zachary’s.” And that, is what it’s all about. To learn more about what makes us tick, go to ZacharysJewelers.com/ourstory.
