We at Zachary’s Jewelers are proud to be your destination for renowned service, quality, and stunning artistry. For nearly 25 years we have provided the finest in high-fashion jewelry beginning at our downtown Annapolis store and at our Severna Park location as well. We are direct importers of diamonds from Israel, South Africa, and India. As the founder of Zachary’s, I offer you more than 30 years of jewelry experience and appraisal expertise. I personally oversee every one of our diamond and jewelry purchases. For all of us at Zachary’s who bring you our years of experience, jewelry is personal. What we really offer you, through jewelry, is fulfillment of your personal expression and style. The community has rewarded us by choosing Zachary’s year after year as Best Jeweler in the area. And as if best were not enough, Zachary’s was also named Coolest Jewelry Store in the U.S. by the jewelry industry’s leading publication. Something else you might not know: Couture jewelry retailers make up only one half of one percent of all jewelers in the country. We are proud to be recognized as one of those jewelers. As a Couture jeweler, we are invited to work with an exceptionally talented group of internationally renowned designers and luxury brands. We strive to provide our customers with the world’s most unique styles and designs, made with the highest level of craftsmanship. The result is jewelry that is not only fashionable and chic, but also destined to become the classics and heirlooms of tomorrow. At Zachary’s Jewelers, you don’t have to settle for the ordinary...just the extraordinary. But what is coolest of all is Zachary’s relationship with our surrounding community as a family-owned business. Our vision, from the beginning, has been that doing good is good business. Everyone who works at Zachary’s lives and shops in this community, and each of us is a member of at least two local charities. Just as the community nurtures Zachary’s, we have the privilege of giving back to the dozens of schools, nonprofits, and other organizations who are part of the Zachary’s family. We are honored to support the important work they do. We never, ever forget that our community is the reason why Zachary’s is here and prospering. Thank for allowing us to serve you. We look forward to bringing you sparkle and fun this and every season. Steve Samaras and all of us at Zachary’s

CORUM continues in

corum ac-one misfit squelette

exellence

The newest addition to the Amiral’s Cup family, the AC-One Misfit is inspired by the oversized colored brake calipers found on exotic cars. It is one of just a handful of AC watches to be inspired in design by something that is not nautical, the ACOne Misfit features a skeletonized movement with red rotor and sold with matching red rubber strap and a black alligator with red stitching strap. SuperLuminova hands and indexes provide the 45 MM night visibility with ease. Water resistant to 300 meters and has sapphire caseback crystal the displays the word “Misfit” in odd fonts. $12,200

corum ac-one 45

Part of Corum’s much loved Admiral’s Cup line, the newest AC-One 45 with a unique nautical wood dial. The natural warmth of wood marks a vibrant contrast with steel coating. Technicality and history come together in a maritime direction where the material breaks with the form. From the black inner bezel ring stand the famous nautical pennants, the unmistakable signature of the Admiral’s Cup collection. Black SuperLuminova hands at the 3 and 9 o’clock. Water resistant to 300 meters and has sapphire caseback. $7,700

corum heritage bubble

Making a big comeback on the market is the Corum Heritage Bubble watch. The oversized domed watch was first unveiled in 2000 and was one of the most unconventional – and fast beloved – watches in history. Now, 15 years later, the new 47 MM Corum Heritage Bubble features a specifically made sapphire domed crystal that stands 18.8 MM high – which was no easy feat to achieve. The third model in the Bubble collection does away with the dial entirely. A skeletonized movement takes its place, with the domed sapphire crystal providing a magnified view of the exposed wheels of the CO0082 selfwinding movement. The case is a collection of smooth rounded lines, just like the original. $8,300

Zachary’s not only supports charitable activities and events throughout our community, but we also host exclusive jewelry shows at our stores for the benefit of local charities. Each show donates a percentage of sales to a selected organization. One of Zachary’s memorable events of the past year was our H.Stern preview, “A Night in Brazil,” with cocktails, cuisine, and live music themed for this world-known Brazilian line of elegantly imaginative jewelry. H.Stern is found at only 37 locations in the United States, including 30 Nieman Marcus and Saks stores – and Zachary’s. Another notable Zachary’s event featured Gucci. At both, 10 percent of the proceeds went to the Johns Hopkins Division of Rheumatology, which treats autoimmune disorders that affect 23.5 million Americans – more than the number of people with cancer or heart disease. At extraordinary events such as these, Zachary’s invites you to celebrate the culture of beautiful jewelry while supporting the good works of charities in our area.

City of Lights

PARIS

The city of lights and love is incomparable. The rivers Seine and Loire, the art, the cafes, the exuberant history, the fashion runways and museums — Paris is all of these plus architecture, cuisine, and attitude! The following offerings relate to Paris past and present and cover a myriad of topics, including people, events, landmarks, and much more!

A Celtic tribe, the Gaul Parisii, settled on the islands of present-day Paris in about 300 BC. The Romans, under the command of Julius Caesar, renamed their city Lutetia when they defeated the Gauls of the area. St. Genevieve became the patron saint of the city for repelling the Huns in 451. The Latin Quarter of the city contains the Pantheon built in her honor. The Capetian Dynasty began in 987 when Hugues Capet was crowned king of France. His father was Hugh the Great, a Parisian count and Frankish duke. The building of the renowned cathedral Notre Dame began in 1163. Its name signifies the Virgin Mary. Interestingly, the cathedral witnessed the crowning of Napoleon as emperor in 1804. The Louvre was initially built as a fortress in 1204 against Vikings. It was later occupied as a royal palace. It has been a public museum since 1793. Last year it greeted 8.3 million visitors. Louis IX was born in 1214. He famously fought in the Crusades but died from a plague in Tunis. The Sorbonne University was founded in 1253 by Robert de Sorbonne. It was one of the most important learning centers of the medieval world. Clovis I established his capital at Paris. He founded the Merovingian Dynasty. France’s first national theatre was founded in 1680 and called Comedie-Francaise. Anges-Jacques Gabriel designed the Place de la Concorde in 1755. A Parisian mob stormed the Bastille on July 14, 1789. The French celebrate this day as Fête Nationale. The French Revolution took place from 1789 to 1815.

The Revolution’s terror came to a conclusion when Robespierre was put to the guillotine in 1794. Although born in Arras, he was actually of Irish descent. Legend claims that he was the only person guillotined facing upward. Parisian mimes still entertain on city streets. Marcel Marceau is considered the world’s most famous mime. The Ile de la Cité on the River Seine is famously home to Notre Dame, the Saint Chapelle, Palais de Justice, the Place Dauphine, and the Square du Vert Galant. The Eiffel Tower sits on the Champs de Mars. It is 1,063 feet high including its antenna. At the time of its completion in 1887, it was the tallest structure in the world. Les Halles was once the premier and centrally located marketplace in Paris. Perhaps the best known street in Paris is the Champs Elysees. It contains many theatres, cafes, and world-class shops. The Arc de Triomphe sits on the western end of the Champs Elysees. The hill of Montmartre is situated on the Right Bank of the city and was once a famous artist district containing studios by the likes of Dali and Picasso. The Moulin Rouge sits near the Montmarte. The Hotel Ritz Paris contains the Coco Chanel Suite that was once the residence of the influential designer. Le Marais is a popular cultural district in Paris — it is also the neighborhood where Doors’ singer Jim Morrison died in 1971. The famous Catacombs of Paris lie beneath Montparnasse. The Hotel de Crillon is one of the oldest hotels operating in Paris today. The luxury hotel once received Emperor Hirohito of Japan for a stay.

All Ears No matter what the neckline, the number-one accessory on the red carpet this year is a pair of statement earrings in one of a variety of styles and settings. Top choices include ear climbers, clusters, and gemmy chandeliers and drops, with some of the most memorable looks adorning the likes of Emma Stone, Keira Knightley, and Rashida Jones at SAG. At the Oscars, Scarlett Johansson rocked an ultra-modern ear cuff with emeralds, aquamarines, and tourmalines. At the Met, JLo wowed in an ear-hugging ruby and diamond fan design. Lobes at the Globes were also adorned in the most luscious gem drops, as spotted on Emily Blunt in Paraiba tourmaline; Lupita Nyong’o in nearly 40 carats of amethyst and peridot; Jennifer Aniston in onyx chandeliers; and Maura Tierney in 80 carats of sapphire slices. Daring danglers at the Oscars included Gwyneth Paltrow in nearly 125 carats of rubellites with sapphires, spinels, paraiba tourmalines, and diamonds; and America Ferrera in bold opal and turquoise drops.

Faced with a shortage of foreign supplies during the difficult 1940s, Gucci began experimenting with atypical luxury materials. One of its artisans’ most subtle innovations was burnishing cane to create the handle of the new Bamboo Bag, whose curvy side was inspired by a saddle’s shape. An ingenious example of “necessity as the mother of invention,” the bamboo became the first of Gucci’s many iconic products. In 1971 the popular Bamboo range was translated into jewelry. Today, the graceful form of the bamboo plant is interpreted across rings, earrings, bracelets, and necklaces in 18kt gold, and it also comes accented with diamonds. Soft and feminine

Marco Bicego’s yellow gold jewelry is natural, understated and seductive

There is nothing like the softness of yellow gold. It is the ultimate feminine jewelry statement, classic and timeless. It works with vintage styles, and vintage dresses, which is important today, as vintage-themed weddings are very much in style right now. Yellow gold is more subtle than other gold colors, and it is also more natural. There is no such thing as naturally occurring rose, white, or green gold. Gold itself is only one color: yellow. Any other color is produced by mixing pure 24k yellow gold with other metals, creating alloys, or mixes of metals. Adding copper, for example, produces rose gold. Adding nickel or palladium creates white gold. Yellow gold is mixed with traces of nickel, copper, and zinc, which make it stronger and slightly lighter in color than pure gold. It is ideal for jewelry.

Marco Bicego’s new Lunaria collection epitomizes the

femininity of soft yellow gold. The collection is inspired by the translucent, disc-shaped seed pods of the Lunaria flower. This unique, organic shape is beautifully interpreted by Bicego with petal-like disks of gold linked by chains. The surfaces of the pods are engraved using the brand’s signature Bulino technique, a satin finish that lends itself particularly well to the motif because it creates an organic look, an essential expression of the Marco Bicego style. Each delicate, 18k gold petal-like element is surrounded by a carefully forged frame that is given a contrasting high polish for an even closer resemblance to the Lunaria pod of nature. The collection includes necklaces, rings, bracelets, and earrings, some of which incorporate precious gemstones cut in slices to repeat the shape of the flat, petal-like gold elements.

Bermuda Is Back

the classic island destination is poised for a comeback

f

From the 1960s until the 1980s, Bermuda lured scores of affluent travelers with its famous pink sand beaches, turquoise waters, golf resorts, and British colonial charm. Mad Men-era travel posters pitched the romance and recreation of an island getaway with the comfort and security of a British overseas territory, all

within a few hours flying time from major East Coast hubs. Bermuda’s heyday, however, peaked in 1980 as travelers sought emerging destinations in the Caribbean and elsewhere. After decades in a slump, the island is looking to make a comeback. Hosting the 2017 America’s Cup should help put it in the spotlight, once again. “Bermuda skipped a generation, so we need to reintroduce it to a whole new group of people,” says Allan Federer, general manager of the newly renovated and renamed Hamilton Princess & Beach Club (formerly the Fairmont Hamilton Princess), which is undergoing a dramatic transformation with extensive renovations thanks to its new Bermudian owners, the Green family. They acquired the landmark in the capital town of Hamilton in 2012 and are investing tens of millions of dollars in upgrading the faded grande dame to cater to a new wave of 21st-century travelers. the 410 rooms, including 43 suites, with sophisticated contemporary design, they have also added new culinary venues, a marina, and an infinity pool. The addition of a spa is also in the plans. Until then, the hotel partners with Hamilton’s Inner Sanctum Spa, which is walking distance from the hotel. Bermuda’s oldest hotel, nicknamed “the Pink Princess,” was founded in 1885 and has a storied history. Beyond romantic symbolism, there is a reason most women wear jewelry aside from their diamond engagement rings every day: diamonds are beautiful! They symbolize natural beauty, value, and significance, and despite some outdated opinions on etiquette, they can be worn every day. “Half a century ago, diamonds were considered appropriate only for engagement rings or for special occasions, but now they are considered essential wear with more casual forms of fashion,” observes Michael O’Connor, of Style & Substance in New York City. O’Connor is a stylist who dresses stars in red carpetappropriate jewelry for awards shows but also for everyday life.

Diamonds are certainly durable enough to be worn every day. Diamond is the hardest gemstone on earth. It rates 10 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, which means it is much harder than any other gem. “The durability of diamonds allows us to wear them on a daily basis, whether it is in a ring, pendant, or earrings,” says Mark Mann, global director of jewelry manufacturing arts for the Gemological Institute of America. The idea of wearing diamonds every day has evolved alongside the trend toward affordable fashions that are inspired by couture designs. It has cued jewelry designers to follow suit by creating more casual diamond looks. Fashion stylist Monica Cotto in New York City has worked with brands and magazines for 20 years and has witnessed this evolution. “I save big statement pieces for evening, but I have no problem pairing fashionforward styles that are thinner and smaller, like stacks of diamond bangles, with a great blouse,” she says. One of the few neutral gems, the colorless diamond has earned the status as the go-to, go-with-anything accessory. Casual luxury is the new norm in fashion, and diamonds are an easy choice to add a bit of sparkle to our daily lives. Young, inventive designers have largely spearheaded the

casual sophistication

fashion-forward diamond jewelry category. The looks are often made with smaller stones that cost less and are sometimes set into silver or 14k gold, making the styles inherently more casual, affordable, and ideal for gifting. Plus, the designs are quite chic — think ear climbers. “Designers are making more casual pieces like lightening bolt diamond earrings that are playful and fun,” adds Cotto. Diamonds also effortlessly punch up outfits, and diamond earrings draw the eye to the face where you want the eyes to fall. Diamonds have the versatility to accessorize anything from T-shirts to cocktail dresses, business suits to bikinis. Although they are hard, diamonds can chip, break, or fall out of mountings if jewelry prongs become loose. Remove diamond jewelry when performing manual labor or participating in sports, and don’t subject jewelry to cleaning solutions or chlorinated water. For everyday jewelry, you might consider pieces with diamonds set in bezel or channel settings that offer protection by way of metal sides and low-profile settings. The positioning of earrings and necklaces — away from potential contact — automatically means that those diamond pieces are out of harm’s way. Also consider platinum settings, which offer the most security because platinum is such a strong metal.

“I wear a diamond ring every day,” says O’Connor. “My diamond is in a bezel setting because I am worried about the edges, and it is set into platinum because it’s extremely durable.” Among the leading jewelry must-haves: diamond stud and hoop earrings; diamond solitaire and pendant necklaces; and diamond bangle bracelets and stackable bands.

John Hardy’s new collections reflect the team’s exotic surroundings and a dedication to craftsmanship

The John Hardy Jewelry collection is renowned for its authenticity. While many designers are inspired by the sights and surroundings they take in while on vacation, John Hardy’s team of designers lives the dream. They are inspired on a daily basis by the natural surroundings of the southeast Asian landscape they call home. Founded in Bali, headquartered in Hong Kong, and with offices in New York, Bali and Bangkok, John Hardy is one of the most exotic jewelry companies in the world. The designs are inspired by a combination of Asian, North African, and Western influences The new 2015 collections were inspired by a trip to the magical city of Luang Prabang, in northern Laos, north of Thailand. Here, the natural surroundings and native culture inspired head designer Guy Bedarida and his team of designers. Everything from the majestic Mekong River to the royal residences and traditional Laotian architecture influenced elements of the new collections. “At John Hardy, we are dedicated to handcrafted luxury and creating objects of meaningful beauty, so each season, I take inspiration from my natural surroundings as well as native artisan cultures,” says Guy. “Similar to Bali, where the John Hardy workshop and design center is located, Luang Prabang is world-renowned for both its gorgeous natural surroundings and its artisanal traditions, which have been preserved carefully over the years.” The new collections are dedicated to the preservation and reinterpretation of these traditions.

Rings with diamonds, black sapphires, and rubies, from the Naga collection.

The Classic Chain collection is delicately hand-woven to represent the silky flow of the waters of the Mekong River. The collection is punctuated by feather motifs, some accented with precious shades of blue sapphires. They were inspired by the native eagles, which symbolize freedom. The Naga collection has been reimagined with ornate scales embellished with diamonds and precious stones. The Men’s collection has been enhanced by the beauty of bronze craftsmanship, a hue that was influenced by the lavish gold temples and saffron-hued robes worn by the area’s monks. Hardy’s iconic motifs include bamboo, long a symbol of Asian culture, and the Naga, a mythical sea creature of the Mekong River.

The brand is committed to sustainable practices in every aspect of its creative process. John Hardy uses recycled silver, sources alluvial gold, and tracks the origins of its gemstones.

Bold gold jewelry is making a glittering comeback, with modern designs and an anything-goes attitude

is trending

Gold is back! The preferred metal of the disco era in all its glittering glory is back in style, particularly in shades of yellow. Designs are more modern, and in some cases more subdued, than they were in the 1980s, of course, with fewer high-polished surfaces and a greater concentration on hand-finishing. The newest way to wear gold is to don multiple pieces at once, mixing sizes, styles, colors, and textures for a look that is as individual as you are. It’s all about mixing, matching, and layering. From several dainty chains to one bold piece of yellow gold jewelry, anything goes. Here are five looks in gold jewelry that are trending right now.

Soft yellow gold is the ultimate feminine jewelry statement, classic and timeless. It works with vintage styles and dresses, which is important for bridal wear, because vintage-themed weddings are in style right now. Yellow gold can be more subtle than other gold colors, and it is also more natural — gold comes out of the ground in a yellow color. Given a high polish, it is at its most glittering. Gold is set to dominate the red carpet this fall.

Stacks and layers

The hottest look in jewelry right now is to stack multiple rings or bangles or layers of necklaces. Layering gold pieces in a variety of textures, finishes, colors, sizes, and gemstone accents is a great way to create a look that is a true expression of individual style. The same pieces can be used to change your look on a daily basis, depending on what you’re wearing. This is your chance to be creative and go from bling to delicate or anywhere in between.

featuring Simon G rings in white, yellow & rose gold.

Links

Large-linked gold bracelets and necklaces are part of the comeback to big looks in gold. Links are one of the most versatile elements in jewelry, because they can be made in so many different sizes, shapes, and finishes. There is a trend toward square, rectangular, and irregular-shaped links. Hand finishing is important because links are larger, and a bit of texture offers an alternative to a high polish, which is very bold. Fortunately, the bigger sized links also leave lots of room for setting diamond accents.

Mixed colors

The three most common colors of gold — white, rose, and yellow — are all equally popular right now. You probably already have jewelry and watches in your wardrobe in all three colors, and now it’s acceptable to wear them together. This year, designers are including all three colors in the same pieces or in one collection, with designs that are meant to be mixed together in stacks or layers.

Open spaces

Open-worked pieces have been popular for a couple of years but are now especially important as the trend moves toward larger, often hollow pieces that might be uncomfortably heavy if they were solid. The latest variation on this concept is to design the open spaces with an architectural feel. The Roberto Coin and Ivanka Trump pieces here are inspired by iconic architectural styles in Paris, New York, and San Francisco.

anniversary ideas

gifts

Whether you are celebrating your first or fiftieth year of marriage, the most important thing to remember is, it’s the thought that counts. Think about her and what fits her style and personality, and she will be sure to love it.

for Anniversary Milestones

The big day is coming. You find yourself searching for the perfect gift, and the stress starts to mount. But this is supposed to be a happy occasion. Trepidation probably isn’t the ideal reaction to the realization that you and your partner are preparing to celebrate a significant milestone in your relationship. But let’s face it, it’s often the reality. And it’s not really a negative reaction — you are simply feeling the weight of finding just the right expression of a very deep love for the most important person in your whole world. That’s perfectly understandable, and it’s a good thing. All you need is a little guidance.

1

Our first piece of advice is to forget about the traditional milestone anniversary gifts. While they are good as guidelines, unless you are the overly creative type, you are going to have a near impossible task of determining the perfect paper, tin, wood, or other material inspired gift. Instead, the easiest thing to do is to go classic. All women love jewelry, flowers, and romantic date nights. As Marilyn Monroe said, “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.” You can’t go wrong taking that advice, so here are a few dazzling ideas she will always love:

First Anniversary Celebrating your first year of marriage is almost as exciting as celebrating your tenth. You have adjusted to married life after the honeymoon, and you have learned a whole lot about your partner, so you want to celebrate this exciting and important first year of your life together as a married couple. Diamond studs are a great option. They are classic and beautiful and can be worn every day. Martini set diamond studs.

5

Fifth Anniversary

After 5 years of marriage, you certainly have something to celebrate, so you want to commemorate this exciting milestone with a gift that shows her how much she means to you. A diamond pendant necklace will make any woman feel loved.

Asscher cut diamond in square halo by Zachary’s.

10

Tenth Anniversary Celebrating 10 years of marriage is a big deal. You have spent an entire decade together. While there may have been ups and downs, you still love her as much as the day you married her. A diamond band to add to her engagement ring and wedding band is a great gift to commemorate this amazing milestone.

Marco Bicego of Marco Bicego Jewelry

“I first get the idea for a piece from my travels — I’m incredibly influenced by the destinations I visit and the nature and architecture I see. Then, once the design is finalized, our craftsmen use a bulino tool to engrave hundreds of tiny lines on the gold surface, creating a tactile finish that remains practically unalterable through time. Should the piece include a colored stone or diamond, they are all hand-set. I am also inspired by the women who wear Marco Bicego. When creating my collections, I always keep the Marco Bicego woman in mind, especially her style and how she isn’t afraid to experiment with jewelry in unconventional ways. Many, if not all, of our collections can be worn together; I design with the mentality that pieces are meant to be artfully layered.”
